A otimização da matriz energética na produção de metais tem sido um dos tópicos predominantes mundialmente. Um dos principais consumidores ineficientes de energia, em alguns casos impactando inclusive no consumo de fornos elétricos são os sistemas de aquecimento de panelas. Buscando novas alternativas de redução de custos de energia, e redução de emissões, a White Martins encontrou uma alternativa técnica aos convencionais Pré-Aquecedores de panelas ar-gás. É o Sistema de Aquecimento de Panelas Oxicombustão com queimador Optifire, que utiliza oxigênio puro como comburente ou ar enriquecido. Comparado ao sistema ar-gás convencional, é possível promover uma economia de combustível de até 50% e redução de emissões de carbono e NOx. A tecnologia do equipamento consiste em realizar a queima estequiométrica balanceada, através da medição precisa dos gases, utilizando queimadores avançados com maior eficiência e melhorando a distribuição de calor, de forma a não gerar diferenças de temperatura entre seções. Com a tecnologia Optifire é possível inclusive o remanejamento de combustível mais nobre, como gás de coqueria em processos como aquecimento de regeneradores de altos-fornos. Este trabalho descreverá o estudo da oportunidade e dimensionamento para aquecedores de panela.

O presente trabalho trata do estudo micrográfico e mecânico de junta soldada a multipassesde tubo de aço API 5L X70, pelo processo manual com eletrodorevestido (SMAW) para os passes de raiz, enchimento e acabamento na posição vertical 3G. Em acordo com API 1104, o consumível escolhido foi eletrodo revestido básico E 9018 – M, a fim de atender a parâmetros de soldabilidade e permitir a comparação dos resultados com trabalhos anteriores. Foram realizados ensaios macrográficos e micrográficos qualitativos da junta soldada e do metal de base, bem como a medição da microdureza Vickers (HV) ao longo da junta e medição do tamanho de grão da região de superaquecimento. Ensaios mecânicos de dobramento, tração e impacto também foram realizados. Os resultados dos ensaios Charpy foram correlacionados com a estrutura metalúrgica, tamanho de grão e microconstituintes presentes na junta soldada.

Research on improving haulage truck safety, started by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, is being continued by its successors. This two-part article reports the orientation of the renewed research efforts, beginning with an update on accident data analysis, the role of multiple causes in these accidents, and the search for practical methods for addressing the most important causes. Fatal haulage accidents most often involve loss of control or collisions caused by a variety of factors. Lost-time injuries most often involve sprains or strains to the back or multiple body areas, which can often be attributed to rough roads and the shocks of loading and unloading. Part II will describe research to reduce these accidents, including improved warning systems, shock isolation for drivers, encouraging seatbelt usage, and general improvements to system and task design.

GEOLOGISTS have been quick to adopt new methods in locating new oil fields and in finding the extensions, laterally or at depth, of the old fields. For most of these new methods he is indebted to the physicist, the engineer, and the chemist, although he has also drawn from such ordinarily unrelated sciences as bacteriology and protozoölogy. These last-named sciences have been of help in problems dealing with the origin of petroleum and, although not of direct application to oil finding, have furnished evidence of value in learning what oil is made from and what are the natural agencies involved in its formation.

This paper will focus on the use of Deflagrating Cartridges for tunnel excavation in Midtown Manhattan at Grand Central and 42nd Street Station, where the excavation has challenges due to the proximity of existing underground infrastructure and a contract blasting restriction. Skanska and FDNY’s collaborative teamwork successfully used deflagrating cartridges and gathered vibration data to properly predict ground vibrations on nearby infrastructure. In cities like Manhattan, conventional blasting excavation methods can be constrained or restricted entirely by the risk of damage to nearby structures, utilities, and disruption to everyday life on the streets. The introduction of Deflagrating Cartridges to the project offered a promising solution to mechanical excavation being used by providing controlled, precise, and deflagrating rock breaking capabilities that minimized disturbance to the above items. This technology minimizes the risk of vibration damage to preexisting infrastructure due to its reduced velocity of deflagration, making it useful for the location of our project. The team's approach involved numerous test shots to help determine the appropriate loading and timing sequence, as well as to collect data to properly be able to predict vibration on the adjacent structures. The successful application of deflagrating cartridges in the Grand Central area demonstrates their usefulness in logistically challenging underground excavation projects in urban cities. Through careful coordination and innovative use of this technology, the team was able to navigate the complexities of working near existing infrastructure while maintaining high levels of safety and productivity. Overall, our paper will speak to the importance of new technologies like deflagrating cartridges for usage in urban environments while minimizing disruption to the world above and below, the technology of these products, and the outcomes of our vibration data collection. By embracing these advancements, construction teams, owners, and other agencies can effectively address the unique challenges posed by projects in densely populated areas, while maintaining safety and productivity.

NO MORE important question has come before the coal-mining industry in many places, especially in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania, than prevention of stream pollution by mine drainage. Available information on acid mine drainage in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania indicates that a pollution problem must be solved in any program of anthracite mine drainage. The major problem concerns satisfactory disposal of the daily average mine-water discharge of 327,000 gallons per minute (g. p. m.), or 472 million gallons per day (g. p. d.), containing a free-acid load of 431 tons or a total acid load of 934 tons a clay as H2S04. This report indicates the scope of the problem and gives some suggestions concerning its solution.

The increasing demand for batteries is resulting in the development of large-scale projects for the production of key battery metals such as nickel and vanadium. Several of these projects plan to extract the battery metals from the ore via chemical roasting, leaving large volumes of waste iron oxides after fuming and/or leaching of the battery metals. These iron oxide wastes can be smelted in a HIsmelt furnace using biochar as the reductant, to produce clean, green pig iron with net zero carbon emissions. This green pig iron can then be added to basic oxygen or electric arc steelmaking furnaces to produce green, net zero carbon, steel. This paper describes the flow sheets and the economics for potential projects producing green pig iron via HIsmelt using waste iron oxides from nickel and vanadium production plants.

"Nestling in a little valley, right under the shadow of the rugged peaks of the Rocky Mountains and just over the great Continental Divide on the Pacific Slope, are Columbia Gardens, Butte's one rare beauty spot. Here purling brooks, fed from springs of snow-water course through the grounds to lend their aid later in making the great Columbia River. It is a question which has done more to make this oasis the charming place it is, nature or man, for both appear to have put forth their best efforts. The inspiring scenery surrounding the gardens is found in close association with the consummate art of the trained landscape gardener. The most delicate flowers, nurtured in large greenhouses, in the pleasant months of early spring and summer are transplanted into outdoor beds and in many instances woven, as it were, into beautiful designs. Green trees and grass on every side rest the tired eyes.Butte owes this delightful breathing spot to former Senator W. A. Clark, who owns and maintains it. A decade ago there were five large smelters belching forth their obnoxious fumes upon the city, making it impossible for vegetation to flourish within the confines of the town, a condition which fortunately no longer prevails. Primarily with a view of furnishing the children with a healthy playground, other than the muddy or dusty streets, Mr. Clark bought and developed the land upon which these grounds are situated. Upon numerous days in each month during the summer season, when school no longer demands attendance, his street railway carries the little folks to and from this ideal spot, free of all charge. ""Children's Day"" at the gardens presents a scene of life and happiness which once seen can never be forgot."

This report describes exhaust-emission data from 10 diesel engines: six 4-cycle, direct-injection, naturally aspirated engines; two 4-cycle, direct-injection, turbocharged engines; one 4-cycle, precombustion-chamber, turbo-charged engine; and one 2-cycle, direct-injection engine. These engines were tested over a 3-year period (1968-70). Lowest emissions were obtained with a precombustion-chamber engine. Emissions from the 2-cycle, direct-injection engine fell within the range of emission rates for the 4-cycle, naturally aspirated, direct-injection engines. Excluding the precombustion-chamber engine and excepting one of the 4-cycle, naturally aspirated engines, carbon monoxide emission rates were about the same for all engines tested. Test data on smoke, odor, and emissions of hydrocarbons, oxides of nitro-gen, carbon monoxide, and aldehydes are given.

"As of 1 December 2014, the 2012 edition of the JORC Code requires Ore Reserves to be defined by studies at the pre-feasibility or feasibility level. This paper examines how the pathway for most mining developments is determined in the Pre-Feasibility Study and how a trade-off must be made between the need to make the best decision, the constraints of limited time and resources, and the level of the project’s accuracy and uncertainty in terms of value. Issues considered include framing the scope of the study, planning for robust decision-making and ensuring effective communication between the diverse disciplines within the team.An inherent conflict exists between the immediate value added to a mining business from an increase in ore reserves resulting from a ‘quick’ Pre-Feasibility Study and the long-term value of pursuing a development strategy based on proper investigation and evaluation of the options. Recognition and resolution of this conflict is necessary if a project is to progress into future development stages, both in a timely manner and with the optimal development alternative and strategy.The challenge for project developers and those conducting the Pre-Feasibility Study is to understand what the key deliverables are (ie an Ore Reserve statement, option selection, business evaluation, forward work plan or risks) and how to follow good practice to ensure that these deliver value.CITATION:Logan, D J and Jackson, J, 2016. In 1996 the Italian Agency for Environmental Protection (ANPA) has initiated a study of the environmental impact of the industrial sector of steel produced by Electric Arc Furnace (EAF). Within the framework of this study a hydrometallurgical process to treat EAF dusts was considered and developed. The paper describes the zinc and lead recovery from fumes coming from carbon steel production. The zinc extraction consists in acidic leaching followed by SX-EW steps. The leaching sludge containing lead sulfates was treated to obtain pure lead salt and inert solid residue. The whole process, that minimizes effluents by recycling the main liquid streams, has been developed to obtain marketable products. The solid waste, containing spinels, was subjected to elution tests in order to verify its compatibility with environmental regulation. The process, that has been set-up and tested in the laboratories of the University of Rome, will be transferred and studied on a pilot plant in order to assess its industrial and economical feasibility.

The development of pelletizing during the last ten years has continued, however, self-fluxing pellets have not been regularly and commercially produced for use in blast furnaces, except as Kobe Steel, Ltd., Japan. This paper tells about unique developments for self-fluxing pellets, and their effects when used in Kobe Steel's No. 3 blast furnace at the Nadahama Works (inner volume 1845 Nm3, hearth diameter 9.5 m)., Several phases of the pelletizing process are discussed individually, and also their relation to performance in blast furnace operation. Special emphasis is placed on proper preparation of the limestone added to the raw materials, and indurating at optimum conditions. Means of improving pellet quality by correct control of size distribution of the raw materials used in pelletizing, and indurating temperatures, are also discussed. As basicity (CaO/SiO2) of pellets increased 0. 1, coke consumption decreased 3. 8 to 4. 2 kg per ton of hot metal, when using 70% pellets in the iron burden.

A busca por pesquisas que provem soluções e inovações que utilizam parte de tais resíduos vem ganhando grande destaque. O poli (tereftalato de etileno) é um polímero termoplástico, e é o material base para produção de embalagens plásticas que são comercializadas mundialmente. Sabe-se que é de grande volume os resíduos sólidos provenientes de tais embalagens plásticas. Com o objetivo de solucionar um problema ambiental e verificar a viabilidade técnica, foram fabricados em proporções de 0%, 5%, 10% e 15% m/m, materiais compósitos de base cimentícias reforçados com fibras de poli (tereftalato de etileno) provenientes de resíduos de garrafas plásticas (PET), posteriormente amostras passaram por caracterizações mecânicas. Destacou-se um aumento das resistências a compressão axial e diametral do material produzido com fabricação de adição de poli(tereftalato de etileno). Tais resultados referente a resistência foram positivos, propondo assim a utilização do polímero na composição de novos compósitos.

Os aços molas ou mais especificamente os aços para a fabricação de molas (ASTM 5160) são basicamente aços com teores de carbono entre – 0,5% e 1,2%. O segredo do sucesso dos aços está relacionado a sua versatilidade, isto é da capacidade de se alcançar um conjunto específico de propriedade, dentro de um espectro muito amplo de possibilidades. Neste trabalho foram determinadas de maneira quantitativa as relações entre as propriedades elásticas com o tempo de recozimento variado e temperatura constante. A temperatura utilizada foi de 850°C, com tempos crescentes de 40 a 110 min. Para determinação das propriedades, os corpos de prova foram submetidos a ensaios de tração. A partir dos resultados observou-se uma redução do limite de escoamento e do módulo de resiliência do material. Decorridos 70 minutos de recozimento, essas propriedades mantiveram-se constantes. É apresentado ainda uma relação entre as propriedades de construção das molas com as propriedades do material utilizado em sua fabricação.

As propriedades mecânicas de ligas TiNbSn são dependentes do processamento termomecânico. O refinamento dos grãos das ligas é obtido através de processos de conformação a frio, atingindo valores de redução que podem estar acima de 80%. Esta deformação a frio permite o aumento das propriedades mecânicas, mas pode reduzir consequentemente a ductilidade e a tenacidade das ligas. Este estudo tem como objetivo observar o efeito da laminação e forjamento a frio nas propriedades mecânicas de ligas Ti35Nb2Sn com 80% de redução. Foram realizados ensaios de tração, dureza, metalografia e microscopia das fraturas. Ambas as ligas deformadas e envelhecidas apresentam as fases ß, a” e ? em suas microestruturas, porém, com algumas mudanças microestruturais. Foi notado que a liga forjada possui maior resistência máxima a tração e dureza que a liga laminada.

A dissolução de precipitados complexos de Ti e Nb durante a etapa de reaquecimento de placas foi estudada utilizando-se amostras de quatro aços microligados. As análises foram realizadas por microscopia óptica e por microscopia eletrônica de varredura nas amostras de placas antes e após reaquecimento em diferentes tempos de encharque. Os resultados mostraram que os precipitados com tamanho inferior a 100 nm foram dissolvidos durante a etapa de reaquecimento do material, não necessitando de encharque. Para precipitados de 100 nm até 500 nm, verificou-se dissolução parcial com o aumento do tempo de encharque até 50 min. Para precipitados mais grosseiros, não houve dissolução significativa durante as etapas de encharque estudadas. Os resultados foram influenciados pelo grau de limpidez dos aços, nível de segregação e razão Ti/N.

5 miles of soft ground tunnel excavation for the SAWS W‑6 project finished months early despite difficult conditions. Success was achieved using TBMs and other equipment built long before most of the crew was even born. The old school means and methods easily adapted to the conditions encountered and were key to the project’s success. Unfortunately, an industry trend is to specify more “advanced” equipment which can sacrifice adaptability or productivity for a perceived reduction in risk. This case history discusses when traditional methods may be the best option.

The Sales Comparison Approach to estimating the value of a mineral property must always be attempted1 . In addition to other parameters, the approach depends heavily on the availability of transaction data. The consideration for the mineral property must be in form of cash, cash equivalent or other consideration. In other words, “What dollar amount did the property sell for?” Mineral properties are generally real estate, albeit frequently buried deeply under the overlying surface real estate, unless the property may be a quarry. In some states, transactions must be recorded in county courthouses, and the sale consideration must be included. In such cases, the appraiser’s job is made easy. In other locations, the sale considerations are withheld in the courthouse data; but occasionally a local transfer tax is collected and recorded. Again, the appraiser’s job is made easy by back calculation with knowledge of the legislated transfer tax percentage. The worst problem occurs when the consideration for a mineral real estate sale is totally withheld. That may occur in so-called nondisclosure states. The Carina iron ore deposit lies 105 km northeast of Southern Cross, WA. The area designated the Yilgarn Iron Ore Project (YIOP) is comprised of five prospects along an east-southeast trending greenstone belt that extends from the Helena-Aurora Ranges in the northwest to the Yendilberrin Hills in the southeast, over a strike length of approximately 40 km. The YIOP project encompasses the previously identified iron deposits of Bungalbin, Bungalbin East and Mt Walton. The Carina deposit was discovered by Polaris Metals NL in May 2007. The Carina deposit is located within and parallel to the structurally complex northwest trending Mount Dimer shear zone. The volcanosedimentary Archaean-aged greenstone sequence consists of ultramafic and mafic lavas and flows with interbedded sediments dominated by chert and banded iron formation (BIF). Supergene enrichment processes formed a goethite orebody replacement of BIF sequences within a doubly plunging synclinal fold structure. Mineralised outcrops dominated by goethite form a low ridge 1500 m long, up to 90 m wide and drilled to over 200 m in depth. In the vicinity of the Carina deposit, iron occurrences have been identified over at least a 12 km strike length and the exploration potential of the area is identified as 30 - 40 Mt. Polaris Metals began exploration in the area in 2006. Target generation in the area used existing state geological survey maps and regional magnetic survey data to focus on BIF occurrences associated with major structures. Early field investigations resulted in the identification of a large outcrop of predominantly goethite mineralisation at Carina. Detailed geological and structural mapping was completed, followed by close-spaced reverse circulation and diamond drilling. The mineralisation is predominantly goethite with specular and coarse platy haematite localised along structures that cut the goethite mineralisation. Mineralised zones are moderately vuggy and larger cavities occur in proximity to fault zones that transect the orebody. A capping by a thin veneer up to 9 m thick of canga or ferricrete occurs in places. By December 2008, 178 reverse circulation and 11 diamond drill holes (seven surface holes, four tails) were completed. The current JORC-compliant resource estimate is based on assays from 72 RC drill holes and using a 55 per cent Fe cut-off stands as an Inferred Resource of 27.9 Mt at 58.6 per cent Fe, 1.3 per cent Al2O3, 3.7 per cent SiO2, 0.09 per cent P, and 10.1 per cent LOI. Assaying has recently been completed and will be incorporated into a new updated resource later in 2009.
