The deportment of a suite of elements through representative gold ore processing unit operations in cyanidation has been investigated. Chromium and lead are not soluble in alkaline cyanide solutions. Arsenic, antimony, cobalt, molybdenum, selenium, tellurium and vanadium are soluble, but typically do not adsorb onto activated carbon to any appreciable extent. Silver, copper, cadmium, mercury, nickel and zinc to varying extents report along with the gold to the carbon eluate. Cadmium, mercury and zinc can report to the carbon regeneration kiln off-gases. Strontium is soluble and adsorbs on carbon where it remgins.

This paper presents a novel application of the boundary element method for numerical modelling of the seismic activity and hazard that is associated with the shaft pillar extraction at Bambanani mine in South Africa. In the numerical model, the tabular mining excavations are represented by displacement discontinuity elements, and to accommodate crush, shear, and fault slip seismic events, the numerical model is populated with additional displacement discontinuity elements that represent modelled crush- and shear-type failures in the rockmass. Crush-type failures are evaluated by applying the limit equilibrium method and a Hoek-Brown strength criterion, and shear-type failures are evaluated by applying a Coulomb-friction strength criteria to Ortleppshear and geological features. In this paper, the modelling results are presented as time history analyses of modelled potency from 1 January 2010 to 30 June 2022 and normalised exceedance rates for different mining periods using an upper-truncated power law. The normalised exceedance rates of seismic events that have moment magnitude Mw ≥ 1.0 are lowest for the initial mining period (26 events per year) and highest for the final mining period (218 events per year). The relative errors of the modelled potency and normalised exceedance rates are typically less than 10% or 15%, which suggests that the modelling methodology is appropriate for medium- and longer-term forecasting of seismic activity and hazard, as presented in this paper. Shorter-term forecasting is not considered in this paper.

"Virtually every article you read on safety has a statement to the effect: “It’s obvious that safety pays”. If it is so obvious, why is it so hard to answer these questions? • How does the Maintenance or Operations Manager convince the Plant Manager to spend money from the annual budget for safety improvements? • How does the Plant Manager influence Corporate to prioritize safety improvements? • How does an engineering firm persuade the owner to spend more on design and equipment up front to reduce risk? There are many cultural and structural reasons why it is so difficult to prove the obvious. In my opinion the main culprits are: the almost universally used ‘Low Bid’ process, variations in reporting incident statistics between industries and countries, and, the Generally Accepted Accounting procedures (GAAP) [or International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS)]. Conventional wisdom is it’s smart not to spend more than you need to meet the minimum regulations and maximize production. But buying on price alone often harms people, degrades the environment, and reduces the company’s bottom line. How can this be? You met the minimum safety requirements and saved money by buying on price. Don’t those savings go right to the bottom line? When you buy on price you get minimum quality, minimum compliance and are often backed corner with no reasonable options to rectify the problems that arise from buying on price instead of buying on long term life cycle cost. Culturally few companies actually ‘walk the talk’. It is trendy to have giant billboards at plant entrances proclaiming world class compliance with quality and safety standards. Annual reports are embellished with safety slogans and sustainability statements. Behind the front gates and the glossy annual reports the message is clear: produce or be replaced. Only a few companies go beyond the window dressing and actually endorse, from the top down, continuously improving their safety culture. Those that do embrace safety, show significant performance advantages over their competition that are reflected in their safety, productivity and environmental records and, ultimately their financial statements and share price. Current accounting (and reward) systems make it unlikely financial managers will accept non-conventional approaches to justifying expenditures on safety because they are driven to report “hard” numbers that can be documented and are within the “GAAP or IFRS Rules.” But in reality, accountants quantify soft or intangible costs all the time in their financial statements. Justifying safety investments is greatly enhanced by quantifying what most financial managers would call intangible costs. Government agencies have no problem assigning intangible costs to justify regulations to improve safety. How many times have you heard that the regulation is justified because the cost to industry is X while the benefit to the society is 2 or 3X? How can they say that without including intangible costs? We find it hard to believe these government claims of benefits to society because we have been trained to think about saving hard direct costs to justify investments."

Eastern Aroostook County, Maine, contains an enormous tonnage of manganese widely distributed in manganiferous sedimentary beds composed of hematitic shale, hematitic slate, and laminated siliceous carbonate rock. The bedded deposits range in thickness from several feet to over 150 feet. Manganese minerals that occur as silicates and carbonate are so minute that they cannot be concentrated by present methods of ore dressing. From a hydrometallurgical standpoint, the deposits can best be classified by amenability to acid leaching. The deposits of Aroostook County are in three geographical groups (see fig. l), designated as the northern, central, and southern districts. At least 13 deposits are known to occur in the latter district, which covers an Ewes about 8 miles wide and 15 miles long. The Littleton Ridge deposit, on the northern boundary of the southern district, previously examined by geologists from the State and Federal Geological Surveys on the farms of Donald H. Haggerty and David A. Abernethy, was pointed out in reports as being possibly the richest and largest in the southern district. The Bureau of Mines sampled this deposit by surface trenching and diamond drilling from May 1 to September 30, 1951. A total of 23 trenches was bulldozed, aggregating 5,355 linear feet, of which 8 trenches were sampled by cutting 185 channel samples over a linear distance of 1,820 feet.

Extraction of valuable metals from sulfide ores continues to be a very important, process and so the strict control of discharge of harmful metals in effluents from refineries becomes more important in the future. The recovery methods for heavy metals have been developed. Some metals such as Se and As are still difficult to be removed to very low concentration, although the techniques for recovery and removal for many kinds of heavy metals have already been developed. Especially, in case of Se the recovery system from water with low concentration has not be developed yet, although the WHO decided Se to be harmful for human beings and then the discharge control is under obligation now. In general Se exists as selenite ion and/or selenate ion in aqueous phase and selenite ion is able to be recovered by coprecipitation with ferric hydroxide or by reduction to solid selenium by general reductants. Selenate ion, however, has a strong resistance to conventional treatments. Therefore the new technique for the recovery of Se from water including selenate ion has to be developed. In this presentation the new approach for removal of selenate ion using the reaction in which ferrous ion is oxidized to ferric ion is presented. Selenate ion is reduced to selenite ion during the reaction and then to solid selenium, while ferrous ion is oxidized to ferric ion. The coexistence of activated carbon is very useful to increase the reaction rate. The use of iron powder is also effective and very useful for reducing gel-like precipitates mainly consisted of ferric hydroxide. The concentration of the residual selenate ion is probably under 0.1 ppm after recovering Se by the mentioned-above approach. In addition to the mechanisms of these reactions, the effects of pH, coexistent positive and negative ions, and reaction temperature are also presented. Furthermore the investigation of the behavior of selenosulfate is presented.

In presenting a thesis on this subject it is advisable to explain a few of the reasons for its seeming incompleteness. World progress has brought us to a position where approximations are not only to be condoned, but regarded as absolute essentials. Production in anticipation of demand is always accompanied by mistakes on the part of the producers. Only through trial and sometimes erring hypotheses may there be evolved the true course and theory upon which the steady triumphant march of world-wide industry depends. The average person likes to have everything placed ?before him in a clear and convincing manner. It is the impossibility of doing this which, in many cases, arises to confound the writer on shales. All that one can do is to present, as lucidly as possible, the known hypotheses' and theories on the subject and leave the reader to study and work out the truth for himself. Many theories have been advanced on the origin of oil-shales ; some may be correct in certain instances and not in others; however, the writer will attempt no decision as to which are and which are not correct, but .will merely point out the relative merits of each. The figures given for reserves of oil and shale in different countries are only approximations and give but a rough idea of the true conditions.

This paper gives an account of the laboratory testing, plant testing and final inclusion of the two-stage sulphuric acid leaching process in the Milliken mill. Operational results for September, 1962, are presented, showing a uranium extraction of 95.5 per cent, with a saving of some 16 lbs. of 100 per cent H~S04 and some 9 lbs. of lime per ton milled. Methods for effecting further improvements in the process are indicated. HISTORY P RIOR to the incorporation of two-stage leaching, the process for the treatment of uranium ores at Milliken consisted of a single-stage sulphuric acid leach, followed by a solution recovery step involving washing in thickeners and two-stage filtration. The thickener overflow solution was subsequently concentrated and purified by ion exchange, and the uranium was recovered, by two-stage precipitation, as ammonium diuranate. Low-carbon shales from 65 deposits and 11 sources of coal-mine waste in western Oregon and Washington were tested in a rotary kiln for their suitability as raw material for expanded aggregate. Shales from 41 sources bloated enough to produce crushed, expanded aggregates, weighing less than 65 pounds per cubic foot in the preliminary tests. The samples were judged on the basis of processing qualities, physical properties, and size and uniformity of the source. Nine low-carbon shale deposits and three coal-mine waste sources were selected for more extensive bloating tests and for examination of the expanded aggregates in concrete shapes. Composite samples from these 12 sources and from 2 commercial operations, when processed for testing in concrete shapes, had bulk densities ranging from 37.S to 72.9 pounds per cubic foot. Damp-cured concrete shapes made with these aggregates had bulk densities ranging from S6 to 119 pounds per cubic foot, and all but three of the lightweight concretes had crushing strengths ranging from 3,270 to 6,810 p.s.i. Properties of the lightweight concretes were compared with those of concrete shapes made with commercial aggregates, and with sand and gravel.

IN this paper we shall examine the Why, Where and How concerning the agglomeration of iron ores and concentrates. Fig. l answers the questions @f why there is so much interest at the present time in the art of agglomeration. The use of sinter or pellets in the blast furnace has materially increased their rated •capacity. ':'President Hains Company Ltd. Engineering J. S. McMahon ( 1) reports an increase from 653 tons of .pig iron per day to 1140 tons of pig iron per day with the use of a 100 per cent sinter burden on one of his blast furnaces. In the United States the use of 100 per cent pellets has increased pig iron production from approximately 1800 tons per day to over 3000 tons pig iron per day (2). "Earthquake induced liquefaction in saturated granular soils is an important phenomenon which causes severe damage to life and property. In the present study, dynamically induced liquefaction of saturated Kasai River sand is studied in 1-g shake table to assess its liquefaction potential. In the shake table, the soil was subjected to sinusoidal motions of amplitude 0.35g at a frequency of 2Hz. A numerical model using FLAC 2D (Itasca 2005) was performed to simulate the shaking table tests. Reasonably good agreement between the experimental and the numerical results has been observed. Moreover, wavelet analysis has been conducted to identify the occurrence of liquefaction in sand and to correlate the observations found from the experiments. The nonlinear curves used to represent shear strain dependency of stiffness of the Kasai River sand was obtained from cyclic tri axial tests.INTRODUCTIONThe term Liquefaction is used in conjunction with a variety of phenomena that involve soil deformations due to cyclic disturbance in saturated soil under undrained conditions. The generation of excess pore water pressure is the hallmark of all liquefaction related phenomena and the reduction in the volume or the tendency of cohesionless soil to densify during undrained loading condition as prevails during an earthquake is also well known. Use of shaking table tests to understand liquefaction of soils has been demonstrated by several researchers (Ye et al. 2013; Ha et al. 2011). Mohajeri and Towhata 2003 and Towhata et al. 2006 carried out 1-g shaking table tests on soil models prepared in laminar box to study the rate dependent behavior of liquefied soils. Ueng et al. 2010 used a biaxial laminar shear box mounted on shaking table to study the settlements in saturated clean deposits of sand and related the volumetric strain in liquefied sand to the relative density for various shaking durations and earthquake magnitudes. Maheshwari et al. 2012 reported increase in liquefaction resistance of reinforced sand through shaking table tests and concluded that the type and amount of reinforcement in the soil layer has influence on its liquefaction potential.The objective of the present study is to compare the behavior of dry and saturated Kasai River sand when subjected to seismic shaking. The Kasai River separates two growing cities, Medinipur and Kharagpur in the state of West Bengal in India. A number of road and railway bridges exist over the river connecting the two cities. The area being in Seismic Zone III, that is, a zone with moderate probability of earthquake, it is important to characterize the behavior of the Kasai River sand during a possible earthquake event especially when a number of bridges are existing over it. Small scale laboratory model tests and numerical analyses using a commercial finite difference algorithm called FLAC2D (Itasca 2005) have been utilized to study the difference in behavior of dry and liquefied Kasai River sand during dynamic loading conditions."

Static pile load tests were performed in order to evaluate bearing capacities and mechanical behaviors of three different pile types: (1) steel-concrete composite drilled shaft with rebar reinforcements inside the concrete, (2) steel-concrete composite drilled shaft without rebar, and (3) conventional drilled shaft (reinforcement concrete pile). The material elastic moduli obtained from pile load tests of steel-concrete composite drilled shafts with and without rebar reinforcement were found out to be similar. On the other hand, the elastic modulus of steel-concrete composite drilled shafts is almost twice as high as that of the conventional drilled shaft. The ultimate strengths of the steel-concrete composite drilled shaft with rebar, the steel-concrete composite drilled shaft without rebar, and the conventional drilled shaft were 9,810, 7,848, and 4,414kN, respectively. The results of these load tests reveal that the ultimate strengths of the steel-concrete composite drilled shaft with reinforcement and that without reinforcement are 2.22 times and 1.78 times greater that that of the drilled shaft. The structural failures of the steel-concrete composite drilled shafts occurred either at the boundary between tip of steel casing and rock-socketed concrete.

The aim of the present study is to investigate the extraction, separation and recovery of the indivisible metals of dysprosium and neodymium from permanent magnets scrap leach liquor solutions with meaningful recovery. The present experimental development focused on dysprosium separation from neodymium and recovery by suitable mineral acids. Fundamental studies of the effect of time, pH and extractant concentration on the metal separation were conducted followed by proposal of a mechanism for extraction. Process development included generation of McCabe-Thiele diagrams and counter current extraction (CCE) studies. After loaded organic generation from the CCE process, this was followed by scrubbing studies as well final recovery of dysprosium.

A evolução da microestrutura de um aço inoxidável bifásico com estrutura martensítico-ferrítica (AIMF) desenvolvido pela Vallourec Tubos do Brasil S.A. foi estudada durante o tratamento térmico de revenimento através de medições in situ das frações de fase por difração de raios X. Para a liga de AIMF o revenimento é realizado para ajuste das propriedades do material e assim como ocorre com as ligas de aço inoxidável supermartensítico (AIS), este tratamento é realizado em temperaturas intercríticas. Após o resfriamento, uma quantidade da austenita revertida pode se transformar novamente em martensita enquanto outra pode permanecer retida na estrutura. Para conhecer melhor a ocorrência deste fenômeno para a liga de AIMF é essencial avaliar a sua evolução microestrutural durante o revenimento. Neste trabalho, a reversão da austenita em diferentes temperaturas de revenimento foi analisada através de difração de raios X in situ. As amostras foram também caracterizadas por microscopia eletrônica de varredura. A propriedade mecânica após diferentes condições de revenimento foi avaliada em ensaio de tração. Foi observado que há uma temperatura crítica em que a austenita revertida se torna mais estável e não se transforma durante o resfriamento subsequente.

"This paper will discuss the successful installation of seawalls for the first phase of a project in Long Beach in California known as the Naples Island Permanent Seawall Repair – Phase 1. How an unconventional method of pile driving resulted in the reduction of the duration of the project while using less space and maintaining minimal noise impacts to accommodate neighbors will also be discussed. Included in the paper will be how non-vibratory equipment used on this project also significantly minimized the risk of disturbances as well as settlement on residential properties; which in turn greatly reduced the risk of damage to existing structures. The first phase of a 6-phase project along a section of the canals with tight clearances and proximity to residents included the installation of a 1,912 linear-foot steel sheet pile wall system in front of the existing deteriorating walls from January until March 2015.INTRODUCTIONThis project was located in the Naples Island neighborhood of Long Beach in southern Los Angeles County, California. After 80 years of the same seawall structures lining the canals of this beautiful neighborhood, the City of Long Beach Department of Public Works decided that it was time to better protect the area’s multi-million dollar homes by repairing its crumbling seawalls. The City realized that the walls will only become worse due in part to several concerns, including bending failure for the already deflecting walls. According to the City, certain sections of the walls had a significant risk of global failure if the area experienced a “moderate” near-source earthquake (City of Long Beach, CA, 2014b). Although the seawalls were in need of major repair, this would not be simple. Due to the tight clearances of the seawalls between the homes and canals, installation would be difficult with heavy, conventional construction equipment.Phase 1 of the project involved installing sheet piles on the water side in front of existing and aging vertical concrete seawalls between the Ravenna and Toledo Bridges along the Rivo Alto Canal. See Figure 1 for the General Plan for Phase 1. Financing for this project by the City’s Tidelands Capital Improvement’s Division allowed the construction to begin in a timely manner. However, the challenges for the City included regulatory restraints that further complicated the construction in terms of the duration of the project due in part to numerous regulations from several regulatory agencies."

Mississippi has had oil production for only the past six years and natural gas production of minor magnitude since' 1926. The search for oil and gas commenced in 1903 and 1496 wells had been drilled in search of oil and gas up to Jan. 1, 1946. As the year 1945 ended, 659 wells were producing oil and gas from 23 separate reservoirs. The production for the year was 8,353,719,000 standard cubic feet of natural gas measured on a pressure base of 15.025 lb. per sq. in. abs., 15.316,009 bbl. of oil¬field water and 19,093,766 bbl. of crude oil and condensate. Production for the year 1944 was 2,636,067,000 standard cubic feet of gas, 14,979,793 bbl. of salt water and 16,420,346 bbl. of crude oil and condensate.

Many contributors have added to the fund of knowledge in the basic sciences related to mineral dressing during the past year. During 1964, the French edition of the Proceedings of the VIth International Mineral Processing Congress together with discussions was printed. Also, complete Preprints of papers delivered at the VIIth IMPC were published in September1. Over a third of the papers presented at VIIth IMPC dealt with fundamentals. COMMINUTION It has been postulated by Ponceleta that flaws need not exist before a stress is applied but rather the flaws are created at the tip of a propagating crack at a stress well below the theoretical breaking stress.

Conventionally, lithium-bearing brines are processed via solar evaporation, chemical purification, and either electrolysis to lithium hydroxide or precipitation of lithium carbonate. Lithium-ion battery technology and electric vehicles are forecast to greatly increase the demand for lithium, but not all lithium-bearing brines are amenable to the conventional extraction process and new approaches are being developed. The chemistry associated with conventional lithium extraction is outlined and two new approaches are discussed.
