Intevdiffusion and intrinsic diffusiorz coefficients were determined in the uranium-niobium system from diffusion couples analyzed with an electron microbeam probe. A Previously unveported intermediate phase, designated in this report as the delta phase, was found to exist along the mobium-rich side of the miscibility gap. Its composition width was determined from the concentration gradients in the diffusion couples. The presence of this phase was also confirmed by microhardness analysis and metallographic observations. THE excellent corrosion resistant properties, high-temperature strength and reasonable nuclear properties of niobium have prompted its use as an alloying element with uranium and as a possible cladding material for reactor fuel elements. Hence the formation and growth of intermetallic phases as well as diffusion data for the uranium-niobium system are of considerable practical importance to metallurgists and nuclear engineers. Diffusion zones may exhibit varying degrees of complexity dependi.ng upon the mutual solubility of the metals involved, and the intermediate phases which may form. In the simplest case where the metals exhibit a calmplete range of solid solubility, a single phase region is produced. Generally, however, the metals may react to produce a multiphase diffusion zone containing several layers of intermetallic phases. A number of investigatorsl-6 have analyzed the concentration gradients present in diffusion couples in order to investigate phase equilibria and solu- bility limits. If diffusion is the rate-controlling process in establishing a concentration gradient, the compositions at the interfaces of the intermediate phases will represent the equilibrium values expected from the phase diagram at the temperature at which diffusion has taken place. No published information is available at this time on diffusion in the uranium-niobium system. A number of investigators7-" have contributed information to the construction of the uranium-niobium phase diagram from other than diffusion techniques. There is good agreement on the high uranium side of the phase diagram, but the high niobium side of the miscibility gap still remains somewhat in doubt. The phase diagram as determined by B. A. Rogers, et al.7 is shown in Fig. 1. The present work was aimed at obtaining fundamental information about the solubility limits of the miscibility gap and diffusion in the uranium-niobium system. A Kirkendall effect, which might be expected on the basis of the rather large difference in melting points between uranium (1132°C) and niobium (2415" C), was also investigated. The concentration gradients were measured by an electron microbeam probe technique, similar to that used by Castaing,l2 Adda and philibert,13, l4 and Macres.4

The literature of the last decade is rich with information relating to the cause and means of control of grain growth in pure metals, but is deficient concerning the role diffusion plays in grain growth, although during this period many new products that depend on diffusion for their properties and success have been developed. Among these are cementation products, produced by calorizing, chromizing, and carbonizing, or by mixing, pressing, and sintering powdered metals such as Syke's iron-molybdenum die material, Genelite, and Elcon Metal (copper, tungsten) etc. This is a fertile field for new developments, but before it can be utilized to the fullest extent there must be a thorough invest,igation of the processes by which diffusion and grain growth take place. Grain growth plays no small part in the process and certainly the physical properties of these products depend largely on the grain size and state of equilibtiuni produced. The field of investigation does not end here, but may be extended to the effect of diffusion on impurities, segregations and dendrites in the broad field of ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy. A number of years ago the author investigated several of these cases and noted, with striking regularity, the pronounced effect of diffusion in promoting recrystallization and grain growth. An example of this phenomenon is given in his paper on chromizingl which contained photomicrographs of large radial or columnar crystals produced by diffusion of chromium in the solid state. Another manifestation of this effect was discussed by Austen,2 who showed the part hydrogen plays in the decarburization of steel and the effect of diffusion upon the grain structure. Diffusion of Metals in Iron It seems to be a general law, whenever two metals are brought into intimate contact at a temperature at which diffusion takes place, that a comparatively rapid, or abnormal, grain growth results. A YEAR ago the authors published a paper on the solubility of sulphur dioxide in molten copper.1 The data in that paper agreed closely with that obtained by previous investigators, which, however, did not agree with the theoretical predictions for solubility of triatomic gases of this type. It has generally been assumed that the reaction of solution is: [ ] Neglecting the slight change in copper concentration and considering that the concentrations of sulphur and oxygen are both proportional to the volume of gas absorbed, it follows that this volume should be proportional to the cube root of the pressure. It was found that a plot of the volume absorbed versus the cube root of the pressure gave a straight line, but that this line did not pass through the origin. Calculations of the equilibrium constant for the reaction showed that it was fairly constant for pressures above l00 mm. but that actually it approached zero at lower pressures. The conclusion was made therefore that the solubility as determined could not be expressed by Eq. I or by any other simple equation, particularly at low pressures. Other investigators have concluded that the solubility of sulphur dioxide in copper as well as in several copper alloys is more nearly proportional to the square root of the pressure.* Such a conclusion, however, does not satisfactorily account for the results, even when rather complicated mechanisms for the solution are assumed. The highly improbable speculations of Lepp2 and of Schneider and Esch3 based upon hypothetical dissociation pressures of Cu20 and (a; 2S dissolved in copper illustrate the type of reasoning that has been used to account for the discrepancy. In the discussion of the previous paper, the authors pointed out that the discrepancy might possibly be due to impurities in the copper, although the purest form available was used. Further consideration of the problem suggested that the impurities likely to have the greatest effect on the solubility of SO2 in copper were oxygen, sulphur and carbon. Accordingly, further experiments have been made to show the effects of these elements. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The apparatus used for measuring solubility was essentially the same as that shown in the previous paper. However, since it was desired to make measurements at low pressures, a McLeod gauge was added and 6-mm. glass tubing was substituted for the capillary. This increased the "hot volume" considerably but was necessary in order to obtain good vacuums in a reasonable length of time. A mercury diffusion pump was also installed.

Two important parameters for dynamic recrystallization can be derived from the changes in the strain hardening rate: the critical strain for initiation of dynamic recrystallization and the point of maximum softening. In this work, these values are determined from the flow stress-strain data obtained in continuous compression testing in the range 900-1100°C. The resulting strains are used to calculate a kinetic model of dynamic recrystallization for two materials: 304 austenitic stainless steel and a hypereutectoid plain carbon steel. The mechanical parameters used to define the proposed model are confirmed with quantitative metallographic analysis of the recrystallized microstructure.

When commercial silicon iron sheets of varying magnetic quality are isothermally annealed at high temperatures, extremely large grains develop in the material having good magnetic properties. These grains are of the (110) [001] orientation and are formed by secondary recrystallization. The primary driving force for this secondary recrystallization is grain boundary free energy. For the secondary grains, activation energies of 103 kcal per mole for nucleation, and of 75.5 kcal per mole for growth, were obtained. The activation energy for nucleation of the secondary grains is consistent with a model involving redistribution of a precipitate acting as the primary grain growth inhibitor. SINGLY oriented silicon iron sheet was first produced in 1935.1 The material as commercially produced today has a very highly developed preferred orientation or texture; up to 95 pct of the grains are crystallographically oriented with their (110) planes in the plane of the sheet and their [loo] directions parallel to the rolling direction. This texture, usually written as (110) [00l], is referred to as the "GOSS" or the "cube-on-edge" texture. Because the magnetic properties of this material are superior to those of the nonoriented sheets in the direction of rolling, the oriented silicon iron has acquired tremendous industrial importance especially in the manufacture of transformer cores and other electrical equipment. The commercially produced material is essentially an iron-silicon alloy containing about 3 1/4 pct Si with minor impurities totaling less than 0.15 pct. The silicon steel heat is melted in the open hearth or electric furnace. The ingots are hot rolled, with or without being slabbed, to strips of 0.100 to 0.080 in. thickness. They are then cold reduced to an intermediate thickness, recrystallized, cold reduced to final thickness, decarburized, and finally annealed at a high temperature. During this high-temperature anneal, extremely large grains with the cube-on-edge texture are produced in the sheet. Several papers have appeared in the literature2-10 relating to the production of the Goss-textured material. Most of these describe the textures produced on cold rolling and on subsequent annealing of single crystal or polycrystalline silicon iron. May and Turnbull11,12 have recently shown the necessity of a second-phase dispersed impurity in the material for the production of the Goss texture. However, none of these papers describes in detail the nucleation and growth kinetics of the (110) [001] grains during the final high-temperature anneal.* The present work, therefore, is an attempt to understand the nucleation and growth kinetics of the cube-on-edge grains in the silicon iron sheet during the final high-temperature anneal.

"This paper details the process followed to raise drill and equip a 6.1 metre diameter vertical service shaft at Glencore’s Mindola Deeps project in Kitwe, Copperbelt Province, Zambia. The project scope comprises a shaft collar, bulk air intake, a pre-sink to -90 metres and raise drilling the shaft from surface to a final depth of 1,892 metres underground, in four separate lifts of approximately 475 metres each. Equipping of the shaft steelwork, headframe erection and commissioning the shaft for hoisting. In addition, the scope included the development of a decline down from 5430’ level underground to the new shaft position on 6205’ level. This paper will provide some insight into the successes and challenges encountered during execution of the shaft works to date and provide some learnings for future projects of a similar nature. INTRODUCTION The Mindola Mine is situated to the west of the city of Kitwe in the Copperbelt Province of the Republic of Zambia (Figure 1). The mine is owned and operated by Mopani Copper Mines Plc (MCM), whose shareholders are Glencore AG (73.1%), First Quantum (17.9%) and ZCCM Holdings Plc (10%).Productivity at the Mindola mine has been adversely affected because of significant ventilation and ore re-handling challenges, which are caused by the dilapidated infrastructure, and design of the existing vertical and sub vertical shaft system. In the circumstances, it was apparent that it was necessary to sink a new vertical shaft that would increase the volume of fresh air down the mine, improving the underground working environment and the current hoisting restrictions, resulting in an increase in productivity and efficiency. Because there were two existing levels ideally situated and perpendicular to one another and because a third level was in close proximity to that perpendicular and because the mine required a ramp down to shaft bottom in any event, consideration was given to raise drilling the shaft as opposed to using conventional blind sinking methodologies."

In recent years many creative technologies are applied to SLon vertical ring and pulsating high gradient magnetic separators. SLon-2500 and SLon-3000 vertical ring and pulsating high gradient magnetic separators are created towards larger scale. Through optimizing the magnetic system and lowering the electric current density, their energy consumption is obviously dropped. New magnetic matrixes are developed to raise the beneficial efficiency of valuable minerals. Special SLon vertical ring and pulsating high gradient magnetic separators are developed which can treat coarser particles of 0-5 mm. Through these technology creations, the mineral processing efficiency of SLon magnetic separators is further raised and their processing cost dropped. Therefore, they have been found wider applications. SLon-2500 applied in Essar Steel of India. In 2007, Essar Steel did a test on its Kirandul hematite ore with SLon magnetic separator and got very good results. The feed grade is 59.77%Fe, after SLon one roughing and one scavenging, the total iron concentrate grade is 65.00%Fe and iron recovery 93.86%. In 2008-2010, the company bought 10 SLon-2500 magnetic separators to treat such iron ores. In 2010 the first SLon-3000 was applied to processing ilmenite. The magnetite-ilmenite deposit is located in Pan Zhi Hua, Si Chuan Province of China. The ore processing flow sheet is: Drum low intensity magnetic separator is used to take out magnetite, and then the SLon-3000 is used to recover ilmenite for roughing. The mags of the SLon-3000 are further cleaned by flotation. The SLon-3000 average operational results are: feed grade 9.52%TiO2, mags grade 17.43%TiO2, mags mass ratio 41.01%, TiO2 recovery 75.09%, non-mags grade 4.02% TiO2, non-mags mass ratio 58.99%. SLon magnetic separators Applied to treat 0-5mm limonite: The feed of SLon magnetic separator is usually 0-2 mm which needs to be ground by ball mill. As many Chinese iron ores are poor grades, if we can throw part of tails before grinding, the grinding cost will be greatly reduced. In 2010, a SLon-1500 and a SLon-2000 were specially built to treat 0-5 mm limonite. The feed grade is 26.51%Fe, mags grade 53.20%Fe, iron recovery 64.26, and tails grade 13.66% Fe. SLon-2500 applied to purify quartz. In 2009, a SLon-2500 magnetic separator was applied to purify quartz in Shan Xi province. Its feed is 0-1mm quartz which contains 0.15%-0.25%Fe2O3, the designed non-mags grade need to be less 0.08% Fe2O3. The production results of SLon-2500 non-mags are 0.05-0.06% Fe2O3, much better than the designed data. SLon applied in Si Jia Ying Iron Mine to recover hematite. Si Jia Ying is a big oxidized iron mine located in He Bei Province of China. In 2005-2010, a plant annually treating 10 million tons of oxidized iron ore was built in which 39 SLon magnetic separators are applied. The total flow sheet results are: Feed grade 30.44%Fe, iron concentrate grade 66%Fe, iron recovery 80%Fe, tails grade 9.65Fe%. SLon applied to recover specularite. Li Lou Iron Mine in An Hui Province of China built a plant annually processing 5 million tons of iron ore in 2010-2011. 25 SLon-2000 magnetic separators are applied to recover specularite. The total flow sheet results are: Feed grade 31.65%Fe, iron concentrate grade 65%Fe, iron recovery 80%Fe, tails grade 10.37%Fe. SLon applied in Da Hong Shan Iron Mine. Da Hong Shan Iron Mine is located in Yun Nan province of China. It treats 4.5 million tons of oxidized iron ore annually. 15 SLon-2000 magnetic separators are applied to recover hematite. The total flow sheet results are: Feed grade 35.61%Fe, iron concentrate grade 64.95%Fe, iron recovery 74.08%Fe, tails grade 15.55%. According to the unique properties and many applications of nano silver powder, it was prepared from acid leaching tail solution. The low value residual gold and silver ions were occurred with fellow heavy metals as pollutants (Fe2+, Cu 2+and Zn2+) in acid leaching tail solution in Mouteh gold mine in Iran. Preparation of nano silver particles was achieved in two steps: first, by addition of ammonia as separation step and second by using different reagents as precipitation and extraction steps. Different controlled parameters were including pH, residence time and temperature, mixing time, and reducing reagents to metals molar ratio. Acid leaching process was carried out with sulphuric and nitric acid via suitable reductants. In order to remove copper, zinc, and silver ions from solution, all of the conditions were controlled. The optimum conditions for preparation of nano silver powder with less than 90 nm were pH 10.5, hydrazine/methanol to silver molar ratio of 3 to 4, and reduction time of 5 min in 45 °C. The results were evaluated via SEM, A.A and UV- Vis spectroscopy analytical methods.

The competitive adsorption of xanthates on sulphide minerals in a binary mineral system (pentlandite and pyrrhotite) was studied using the pseudo-in-situ technique of attenuated total-reflectance FTIR spectroscopy. The minerals were placed in the same collector solutions, either separated by a glass wall or in direct contact with each other before magnetic separation and separate analysis. The effect of mineral interaction on xanthate adsorption was clearly demonstrated spectroscopically for the first time. At low concentrations of xanthate, its adsorption on pentlandite was activated by physical contact with pyrrhotite; the effect may be attributed to the enhancement of electron transfer through electrical contact between the two minerals. The results emphasise the need for caution in extrapolating results obtained from single-mineral studies to flotation practice

Successfully managing the risk of this occurring is crucial for any project in an urban area to proceed. Common risk management approaches include a combination of establishing suitable ranges of TBM operational parameters and using geotechnical instrumentation for deformation monitoring. Another risk management tool is material flow reconciliation, which varies depending on the specified mining method and the equipment choices by the contractor. This paper compares recent and ongoing projects in the Pacific Northwest regarding overexcavation risk management.

"In mineral processing, the recovery and/or concentration of the value components cannot occur in one operational stage, therefore requiring the use of separation circuits based on several flotation stages. The components to be separated are typically distributed at different concentrations and different particle sizes, resulting in different levels of recovery. Typically, more than one value component must be selectively removed by exploiting the differences in the components’ floatability at different pH values, pulp potential and particle size. Several methods for the design of these circuits are available in the literature, but comparatively few studies present circuit analysis tools or address the design of a multiple-product flotation circuit. In this study, global sensitivity analysis was used to analyze a flotation circuit with several products, such as copper, lead and zinc. This analysis was based on the Eureka mine concentrator plant. The analysis was performed for each of the sections of the circuit as an overall evaluation of the circuit. The Sobol’ method and the correlation method were used to evaluate the Eureka mine concentrator plant using the SimLab 2.2 software."

Macrosegregation has always been an important issue with the solidification processes, particularly in Direct-Chill Casting of Aluminum alloys, where uneven properties, surface and bulk defects and limitations in productivity can be arisen due to macrosegregation in the cast product. Following the global attempts to practically predict the macrosegregation, in the present work, a numerical model was developed based on an industrial scale DC casting process to simulate the solidification and macrosegregation in an Al-4.5%Cu billet. Interesting aspects of this investigation are concerned with an efficient numerical scheme to keep simplicity, consistency and desired physical resolution of the solidification phenomena together. In the mathematical model, coupled conservation equations of mass, momentum, energy and species were solved numerically using finite volume method. A different numerical scheme, called SIMTLE, was introduced to link the energy and species equations with the phase diagram of the alloy. Calculations were performed on an industrial case and obtained results were compared to available experimental data to assure the performance of the model. Different macrosegregation features were predicted and discussed on the solidifying Al-alloy billet.

"INTRODUCTION Conventional steel bar reinforcement is used in many tunnel linings to provide high flexural and tensile load resistance. These Reinforced Concrete (RC) tunnel linings may suffer flexural cracking during service or, in the case of precast concrete segments, during production, handling, or installation. Cracks can lead to corrosion of steel reinforcement, so limits are placed on maximum acceptable crack widths to reduce the likelihood of corrosion during the intended design life (AFTES, 2013; MC2010, 2012). However, the relatively light level of reinforcement used in many applications can result in quite wide in-service crack widths, so either additional steel bar reinforcement is required to limit maximum crack widths, or fibers can be included to control crack widths. Numerous investigations have been undertaken into the efficacy of including steel fibers to reduce crack widths in conventionally reinforced members (Stang and Aarre, 1992; Abrishami and Mitchell, 1997; Bischoff, 2003; Dupont and Vandevalle, 2003; and Jansson et al, 2010), but steel fibers suffer the problem that they are at least as sensitive to corrosion at cracks as steel bars and therefore have similarly tight limits placed on acceptable crack widths (AFTES, 2013). An alternative means of maintaining narrow crack limits in RC members has therefore been sought. The current investigation was instigated following an observation that theories promoted as an explanation for the ability of steel fibers to reduce crack widths in reinforced concrete flexural members (Deluce et al, 2014) do not depend on the material composition of the fibers used but instead depend primarily on the tensile stress generated by the fibers across cracks. Since it is known that macro-synthetic fibers are capable of equaling the post-crack tensile capacity of steel fibers, it has been hypothesized that macro-synthetic fibers are also capable of reducing crack widths in reinforced concrete flexural members but with the added advantage that macro-synthetic fibers are completely immune to the effects of corrosion. Use of macro-synthetic fibers to reduce maximum crack widths in reinforced concrete flexural members subject to aggressive environmental exposure is more rational than use of steel fibers because steel fibers are very sensitive to the corrosive effects of environmental exposure at cracks. The current investigation was therefore undertaken to explore the potential use of macro-synthetic fibers to reduce maximum crack widths in reinforced concrete members subject to flexure. Barchip BC54 fibers were selected as they are one of the most widely used and competitive high performance macro-synthetic fibers currently available."

PLASTIC strain in polycrystalline metal as a result of bulk movement of one grain with respect to another along grain boundaries is not new. Rosenhain and Humphrey observed such effects shortly after the turn of the century.' Since then, observations of grain boundary deformation have been made on several metals. In recent years, intensive studies of the deformation at grain boundaries have been performed on polycrystalline metal and bicrystals.14-20 Aluminum or its alloys have been used in these latter studies. The subjects of controversy at present appear to be not whether grain boundary deformation exists, but 1) how quantitatively important it can be in polycrystalline metal, and 2) what its detailed mechanism is. Some investigators have concluded that such de- formation is minor in importance while others have concluded that it is a major consideration. Some have concluded that it involves shear of one grain over another at the interface while others have concluded that it operates by crystallographic deformation within the grains near ,the boundary. A categorical statement for electrolytic magnesium cannot be made on either of -these points. When polycrystalline magnesium is deformed in creep under conditions of high strain rate and low temperature, grain boundary deformation is relatively slight." Under these conditions, much deformation occurs within the grains and boundary contours change to a higher-energy jagged form. The result is shown in Fig. 1, where boundary jaggedness is pronounced upon polishing and etching after a plastic strain of approximately 6 .pct at 300°F and 3000 psi. No migration of the boundaries has been detected in this process. When the same metal is deformed the same amount at 600°F and 300 psi, resulting in a much lower strain rate, the boundaries migrate toward a lower energy configuration, where

The structures and transformation temperatures of high-purity Fe-Cr alloys have been investigated as functions of composition (0 to 10 wt pct Cr) and rate of quenching from the high-temperature Y phase field (up to 40,000°C sec-1). The structures were chmacterized by transmission electron microscopy. The transformation temperatures for each alloy exhibited the progressive decrease to a constant value with increasing cooling rate which has been shown to be characteristic of several iron binary systems. The corresponding structures were found to become increasingly finer in scale with increasing cooling rate and solute content, but to remain essentially equiaxed in character. In all the materials except the high-purity iron and one of the alloys, an additional and lower transformation temperature than the constant value for the equiaxed structures was observed. The structures of specimens which transformed at these lower temperatures (only single thermal wrests were observed in any given run) were martensitic and consisted of arrays of fine ferrite laths which varied in size and morphology with changing solute content. The factors controlling the nature of these transformations are discussed. The composition dependence of the martensitic transformation temperature, ME, in Fe-Cr alloys together with those reported for other iron binary systems indicate that MB for pure iron is some 700°c, rather than the values of 550° and 760°C reported previously. This conclusion is further supported by the results of a compmison of the thermodynamics of mmtensite formation in several systems. ThE extensive investigations of the structures formed on athermal transformation in iron and its alloys have led to the characterization of several forms of martensitic or "military"1,2 transformations and, in addition, a "civilian7' transformation to ferrite or "equiaxed a"* which occurs athermally and at a very high rate.374

STATISTICAL methods are becoming increasingly important for inter-preting routine reports, or for analyzing special test data in industrial plants, such as steel plants. They have already become practically a necessity to the plant metallurgist. A paper by Chancellor,1 written in 1933, gives many examples of the benefits the plant metallurgist can derive from the use of these methods. The present paper discusses applications of importance to many others who must analyze reports in the steel plant, as well as other examples of interest to metallurgists. Statistical Methods Logically Suited to Plant Problems.-Statistical methods are not new as a branch of mathematics. Until comparatively recently, however, practical applications were confined mainly to actuarial science, biology, and economics; fields in which an observed result is obviously influenced (and often determined) by a complicated set of vari-ables more or less constantly tending to affect it. As pointed out by Daeves, 2 a decade or more ago, problems in industry are basically similar to those in these other fields in that a given result is at least partly due to that chance combination of causes happening to be present at the time. When trying to do the same thing repeatedly, constant results are never attained; they vary about the desired result with more or less well defined mathematical regularity. Such a condition arises out of the great number of factors tending to affect the final result. If statistical methods are so valuable to the biologist or economist, why then should they not also be of great value to plant managers and engineers, and to all who must interpret reports from various sources in the industrial plant? Within the last few years, industry has become conscious of this situation, and the use of these methods has been rapidly expanding in such plants. ?

"This paper examines unpredictability in the parameters governing hydraulic fracturing (HF) as used in stress amelioration for underground excavations, with the aim of showing how this unpredictability may affect design decisions. Using uncertainty models that are appropriate to particular levels of information and degrees of uncertainty, this paper demonstrates how these can aid in decision-making related to feasibility assessments of HF arrays for stress amelioration.Cave mining operations produce large underground voids and high stress concentrations around critical mine locations. These stress concentrations increase the potential for rock burst events. Although de-stress blasting has a long history for redistributing high stress concentrations, to improve safety and reliability HF is now being trialled as an alternative.Unfortunately the HF process is extremely uncertain, and so predicting fracture propagation geometry is difficult. Although the major parameters governing HF propagation have been previously identified, no indication has been given regarding the contribution that uncertainty in these makes to unpredictability in the overall HF system. Using simplified models of HF and referencing a recently proposed characterization of unpredictability, we relate unpredictability in the various governing parameters to the effect it has on strain energy density (SED) in the surrounding rock. Within these models we analyse SED as well as the stress intensity factor (KIc) when investigating the effect of parameter uncertainty and its influence on various crack propagation criteria (Sih & Macdonald, 1974). These models are applicable to unpredictability associated with the development of new fractures; the case of pre-existing fractures is the subject of on-going work.The paper will assess in greater detail the various governing parameters, and investigate the appropriate use of other uncertainty models. As a result, we will show how assessment of uncertainty in HF parameters can be used to both guide feasibility studies and determine the optimal allocation of resources to improve the final design."

With the end of the official apartheid legislation in the early 1990s, South Africa was heralded as a non-racial country. However, racial awareness has been reintroduced into the country with the Affirmative Action and Black Economic Empowerment legislation. Gender and racial transformation are the current order of the day. All organizations are required to reflect in their make-up the demographics of the population as soon as possible. Scorecard shave been drawn up to measure the rate of transformation for gender and race in organizations. The mining industry in South Africa has been in the forefront of this transformation legislation and scorecards. This paper seeks to show the effect of gender and racial transformation on mining engineering education and professionalism by analysing the changing demographics of graduating mining students at both the South African universities offering a degree in mining engineering, the professional registration of mining engineers with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), and the membership of the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM), the vocational institute for mining engineers. It also demonstrates the absurdity of gender and racial quotas based solely on the demographics of the current population of the country. This paper shows the degree to which mining engineering has transformed in both gender and race.

Several final pits in the Seneca No. 1 Surface Coal Mine were abandoned in the 1960's without being reclaimed. In addition, a progressive landslide aggravated by the abandoned mine land conditions was threatening a county road and private property. An AML-funded project to stabilize the landslide and reclaim the final pits was completed in 1986 for the Colorado Division of Mines and Geology (formerly Colorado Mine Land Reclamation Division). The site was visited after ten growing seasons. The land is stable and the vegetation re-establishment is strong. Volunteer native plant species are now invading the reclaimed sites.

The substantial expansion of previously discovered gas pools was the principal feature of petroleum activity in West Virginia during 1940. At least one new gas pool was discovered and various other successful wildcat completions may prove to be gas-pool openers. Some slight extensions of oil pools were also made. The new productive territory, principally gas, added by these extensions was approximately 33,800 acres. ' In general, oil activity was slight because of unfavorable crude prices. Gas activity, on the contrary, increased considerably, although the price of gas did not materially change. The account of operations, as gathered from trade journals and other reporting services, shows that 709 new wells were drilled, resulting in 102 new oil wells with I055 bbl. of daily new produc-tion; 468 new gas wells with 633>g47,000 cu. it. of daily open flow; and 139 dry holes. Also, 91 old wells were drilled to deeper sands, with 143 bbl. and 44,833,000 cu. ft. of added production. On the new wells the oil average was 10.34 bbl, per well per day; and the gas average was 1,354,000 cu. ft. per well per day. On new wells the ratio of dry holes to completions was 19.61 per cent. On deeper drilling to other sands the ratio of failures was 12.I per cent. From an exploratory standpoint, one strictly new gas pool (Lorentz) was opened in Upshur County. Little forecast of its extent or reserve can now be made. The new extensions of various other previously discovered pools, however, give assurance of a new gas reserve that will equal approximately a year of gas demand. In addition to these definite supplies two widely separated Oriskany sand (L. Dev.) wildcats in Jackson County, one of which was completed late in 1940 and the other early in 194.1, may indicate two separate pools or may greatly extend known pools. In south-ern Kanawha County, also, an old Oris-kany-sand well deepened to the White Clinton sand (Sil.) showed a volume of 733,000 cu. ft. and rock pressure of 1800 Ib., giving rather clear assurance that this deep sand, in which only slight quantities of gas had previously been found, should eventually supply much new gas. On the other hand, various deep tests to the Oriskany sand in Harrison, Putnam, Randolph and Wood Counties were totally dry or gave only small volumes of gas, The principal oil wells completed, by counties, were: Calhoun, 15; Clay, Ir; Pleasants, 14; Ritchie, 15; and Roane, 7. Production for the year was estimated by the U. S. Bureau of Mines as 3,444,000 bbl., as compared to 3,684,000 bbl. in 1939. The leading counties in gas-well completions were: Boone, 36; Braxton, 17; Cabell, 25; Calhoun, 16; Clay, 22; Gilm.er, 47; Jackson, 38; Kanatvha, 77; Lincoln, 18; Putnam, 32; IGtchie, 40; and Wayne, 31, Production for the year is estimated by me as I70,000,000,000 cu. ft. as compared to I59,226,000,000 cu. ft.* in 1939.
