The substantial expansion of previously discovered gas pools was the principal feature of petroleum activity in West Virginia during 1940. At least one new gas pool was discovered and various other successful wildcat completions may prove to be gas-pool openers. Some slight extensions of oil pools were also made. The new productive territory, principally gas, added by these extensions was approximately 33,800 acres. ' In general, oil activity was slight because of unfavorable crude prices. Gas activity, on the contrary, increased considerably, although the price of gas did not materially change. The account of operations, as gathered from trade journals and other reporting services, shows that 709 new wells were drilled, resulting in 102 new oil wells with I055 bbl. of daily new produc-tion; 468 new gas wells with 633>g47,000 cu. it. of daily open flow; and 139 dry holes. Also, 91 old wells were drilled to deeper sands, with 143 bbl. and 44,833,000 cu. ft. of added production. On the new wells the oil average was 10.34 bbl, per well per day; and the gas average was 1,354,000 cu. ft. per well per day. On new wells the ratio of dry holes to completions was 19.61 per cent. On deeper drilling to other sands the ratio of failures was 12.I per cent. From an exploratory standpoint, one strictly new gas pool (Lorentz) was opened in Upshur County. Little forecast of its extent or reserve can now be made. The new extensions of various other previously discovered pools, however, give assurance of a new gas reserve that will equal approximately a year of gas demand. In addition to these definite supplies two widely separated Oriskany sand (L. Dev.) wildcats in Jackson County, one of which was completed late in 1940 and the other early in 194.1, may indicate two separate pools or may greatly extend known pools. In south-ern Kanawha County, also, an old Oris-kany-sand well deepened to the White Clinton sand (Sil.) showed a volume of 733,000 cu. ft. and rock pressure of 1800 Ib., giving rather clear assurance that this deep sand, in which only slight quantities of gas had previously been found, should eventually supply much new gas. On the other hand, various deep tests to the Oriskany sand in Harrison, Putnam, Randolph and Wood Counties were totally dry or gave only small volumes of gas, The principal oil wells completed, by counties, were: Calhoun, 15; Clay, Ir; Pleasants, 14; Ritchie, 15; and Roane, 7. Production for the year was estimated by the U. S. Bureau of Mines as 3,444,000 bbl., as compared to 3,684,000 bbl. in 1939. The leading counties in gas-well completions were: Boone, 36; Braxton, 17; Cabell, 25; Calhoun, 16; Clay, 22; Gilm.er, 47; Jackson, 38; Kanatvha, 77; Lincoln, 18; Putnam, 32; IGtchie, 40; and Wayne, 31, Production for the year is estimated by me as I70,000,000,000 cu. ft. as compared to I59,226,000,000 cu. ft.* in 1939. Underground coal mining can cause seismic events. There is currently no way to predict such phenomena reliably, in particular stronger events. That is why, according to the current state of the art, empirical methods are employed in this field. Some assessment criteria, which relate to the geological and mining situation and either stimulate or rather help to avoid seismic events, are presented in this paper. These criteria are examined for a practical mining situation in Germany, with a view to estimate possible seismic events.

Opportunities to promote enhanced eco-efficiency (i.e. the simultaneous improvement in economic and environmental performance) for the minerals industry exist across the whole value chain. However, given the current operational models of major companies within the industry, and their focus on refining of primary ore bodies, it is important to understand where such opportunities might lie within minerals beneficiation, as it is here that major environmental pressures are felt. This paper examines the combination of unit technologies in a minerals beneficiation train, and explores the inter-relationship between energy input and water consumption for a given mineralogy and product recovery, as these are two critical environmental issues which affect the overall viability of many minerals plants. In particular, we review constitutive relationships for each of the sub-processes of comminution, flotation, and tailings dewatering, and suggest how these might be integrated into a unified hybrid model, with particle size distribution as the key design variable. Such a model can then be used to explore the trade-offs between different performance objectives (be these technical, economic or environmental) as part of a multiple-objectives optimisation exercise. In this way, it may become practical to envision situations in which concentrate grade and recovery are sacrificed, marginally, in order to reduce energy demand in comminution, and improve overall water recovery. In addition, this work provides a useful baseline against which to analyse the potential for dry processing. This becomes more relevant as the industry commits to advancing the sustainable development agenda in the face of the increasing life -cycle costs and impacts of minerals processing operations, coupled to declining ore body grades, and the desire to maximise recovery of minor and trace elements. Some specific observations for copper are offered, supported by operational data from Zambian copper mines.

Placer gold in the Iditarod and Innoko mining camps of western Alaska is derived from a suite of comagmatic, Late Cretaceous to Early Tertiary, alkali-calcic, meta-aluminous. volcanic-plutonic complexes and peralumi-nous rhyolite sills that intrude Mesozoic flysch. Heavy-mineral concentrates from 42 mining operations and streams draining known mineralized areas in the igneous complexes contain placer gold and a variety of ore minerals derived from epithermal to hypothermal conditions of formation. The minerals include cassiterite, ilmenorutile, samarskite, cinnabar, scheelite, chromite, stibnite, silver sulfosalts, monazite, and zircon. Results of the study show that 1) cinnabar. stibnite, and quartz formed with the bulk of the placer gold in an epithermal lode environment, 2) chromite appears to have originated in mafic phases of monzonite plutons and alkalic basalts, and 3) niobium-tin-tungsten-uranium-silver values may have been derived from stockwork accumulations in cupolas of monzonite plutons.

The State Division of Geology Arkansas Resources and Development Commission, and the Arkansas-Oklahoma Coal, Operators Association requested assistance from the Bureau of Mines in a study of coal-mining methods and practices in .Arkansas coal mines with the objective of reducing production costs. On October 7, 1946, a joint meeting was held by representatives of the Arkansas Resources and Development Commission, approximately 30 coal-mine Operators of the Arkansas -Oklahoma Coal Operaters Association, and representatives of the Bureau of Mines. The many problems confronting the coal industry in Arkansas, including mechanical mining in thin beds, costs, labor, and working time were discussed. Following this Meeting, a joint letter from Harold B. Foxhall, State geologist, and -P. R. Stewart, commissioner, Arkansas-Oklahoma Coal Operators Association, was addressed to Dr. R. R. Sayers; former ,Director of the Bureau of Mines, requesting that mining conditions in Arkansas be studied.

Introduction Mineral exploration interest, principally for gold, in the south-western Pacific has surged to new proportions. This is primarily due to the application of epithermal exploration concepts in the Australian-Oceana region. Other factors that have contributed to the high level of exploration interest include governmental policies supportive of mineral exploration, along with relative ease of tenure access and a relatively short bureaucratic process. This paper highlights exploration and development activities in the North Island of New Zealand, Fiji, Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands, and Papua New Guinea (Fig. 1). It provides a framework to understand the overall recent enthusiasm that has been brought to the south Pacific by explorationists. Through these recent developments, it is clear that the south Pacific region will become a significant gold producing area and thereby worthy of attention and study. Papua New Guinea alone is the free world's seventh largest producer (Table 1). And, with the addition of production from deposits presently being developed, this status is likely to be raised. History Gold was first noted on various Pacific islands in the late 1500s by Spanish explorers. They thought they had reached the legendary King Solomon mines. Since then, the history of prospecting in the southwest Pacific has coincided with the colonization of the region. Settlers in New Zealand extensively mined alluvial and lode gold deposits starting in the 1850s. The spread of European colonization to the more remote Pacific islands from 1880-1940 was accompanied by varying degrees of prospecting activity by planters, traders, and settlers. Some were successful, others may have been successful, but never returned due to hostile indigenous peoples or disease. In general, records of such prospecting activity are meager and exploration leads are, in some cases, gained through local village folk memory. Most early discoveries were alluvial finds. These led to placer operations, particularly in New Zealand, the Solomon Islands, and Papua New Guinea. Continued prospecting located lode deposits such as the Morobe Gold-field of Papua New Guinea, the Coromandel Peninsula of New Zealand, and the Emperor of Fiji. Some areas were prospected thoroughly. Yet others, such as Vanuatu, remained relatively unexplored until the present exploration surge began. During World War II, interest in minerals was diverted. It was renewed significantly until the middle 1960s and early 1970s when regional porphyry copper exploration was conducted.

The productivity of a mine has the same goals as the quest to complete a tunnel project both safely and within time. A key aspect to achieving this goal is to excavate and support the working face as quickly as possible, allowing early re-entry to start construction of the next advance in safety. As with tunnels, the use of high performance wet-mix sprayed concrete has increased in mines dramatically over the last few years, and year on year has seen a stepwise increase in shotcrete performance, particularly in the first few hours. Shotcrete early age strength development clearly offers mining teams enormous advantages by allowing early, safe re-entry to the face. This paper illustrates that in the hard rock tunnelling field, modern shotcrete approaches do not cause delays in re-entry, but allow a continuous construction cycle. Furthermore, the paper identifies the most suitable, up-to-date shotcrete admixture and equipment technology available to the mining community to permit early re-entry.

Unsaturated permeability and flow capacity exist where copper mineralization is disseminated in segmented, very-low-permeability ore blocks. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) investigated this condition for application to in situ, copper-leach mining at the Cyprus Casa Grande mine site. Moisture retention properties are derived and combined with scanning-electron-microprobe data to characterize the host rock's mineralogy, texture, pore size, distribution and permeability. Finite element modeling is used to estimate saturated permeability and the ambient degree of saturation and to gain insight into appropriate in situ leach design. Recommended design modifications for optimized solution distribution and maximum recovery from the Casa Grande ore require: • well pressure injection exceeding 1500 psi and recovery wells operating in a suction mode, or • secondary, permeability enhancement by explosive rubblization. In the former, the lack of conditioning and the use of lesser pressures will result in leach solutions confined to the macrofractures. With the latter requirement, pressures can be reduced to 500 psi, with improved recovery and solutions containment.

IN ORDER to comprehend the help and information that may be expected from electrical prospecting, it is necessary to have at least a general knowledge of the methods and principles involved in preparing and interpreting results obtained in the field. Electrical prospecting is rather complicated, both in theory and practice, and in order to make a brief description clear to the practical mining man it has been necessary to idealize and generalize the problems, at the risk of having such simplification criticized by the theoretical man. This simplification must not be misinterpreted as showing a lack of theoretical knowledge. FIG. 1.-FLOW OF CURRENT IN AND AROUND A CONDUCTING BODY. For its operation, electrical prospecting mainly depends on-the fact that most metallic ores conduct an electric current much more readily than barren rocks. If an electric current flows through a block of ground within which a body of chalcopyrite is enclosed in country rock of schist, the current will find less resistance to its passage through the chalcopyrite than through the schist, even though the passage through the latter be much shorter. This is because the longer path through the chalcopyrite offers less resistance, owing to the superior electrical conductivity of the chalcopyrite (Fig. 1).

Humic-acid-rich deposits exist in Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, New York, North Dakota, Michigan, Minnesota, Texas, and Wyoming (Burdick, 1965) and in New Mexico (Shomaker and Hiss, 1974). New Mexico humic deposits are associated with coal in the northwestern part of the state where humate and weathered coal are presently mined. Discussion of the humic -acid industry in New Mexico requires an understanding of complex terminology and coal geology. TERMINOLOGY Humic material is not a pure substance so an ambiguous and complex terminology is in use by geologists, chemists, soil scientists, agronomists, and producers. Material mined for its humic-acid content is an extremely variable mixture of base-soluble humic, fulvic, and ulvic acids and their salts, formed during partial or complete decay of organic matter. This decay releases a high-molecular-weight organic material which is darkly colored, partly colloidal, and weakly acidic.

The comments contained in the discussion of the paper concerning the prediction of fracture gradients are of considerable interest, since the subject is of a very controversial and timely nature. It is regrettable and Fairhurst2 contradicts the author's statement in the third paragraph of Other Applications. These references create significant doubt that Eaton's Eq. 1 predicts fracture pressure during the injection of fluid into old wells. 3. No evidence is presented in this paper to support the author's Conclusions 2 and 3. While an empirical coefficient related to back-calculated field data is correlated with depth (Eaton's Fig. 4), there is no reason to suspect that this coefficient might be the Poisson's ratio of the various formations involved. 4. Until the field data supporting the empirical approach proposed by the author are presented and evaluated, the accuracy claimed in Conclusion 5 is without substantiation. References 1. EARLY in the month of August, 1877, a miner in Gold Hill, Nevada, made the unlucky remark that, according to his observation, that month was usually quite free from accidents in the mines. Never was presage wider from the truth. When the month closed twelve mishaps had occurred, killing six and wounding nine persons, and for the rest of that year the Comstock mining communities were kept in a ferment by the frequent occurrence of appalling disasters. There was a real tidal wave of calamity sweeping over the mines, which has not been repeated since, and according to common report was never known before on the Comstock. I was much interested in studying the character of these misfortunes, which also aroused concerted action on the part of the miners, and I have collected a list of the accidents which took place from July, 1877, to May, 1879. Minerals similar to the indicator minerals used in kimberlite exploration are widespread in the Cainozoic alkali basalts of north Queensland. Magnesian ilmenite, pyrope garnet, chrome diopside, chrome spinel, phlogopite and zircon were recovered from most of the localities examined. The occurrence of these minerals creates significant problems when indicator minerals are used for diamond exploration. Basaltic ilmenite is visually similar to kimberlitic ilmenite. Untransported grains are rounded and have pitted surfaces. Basaltic ilmenite grains often have exsolution lamellae and reaction rims of titanomagnetite. Although kimberlitic and basaltic ilmenite are chemically similar, basaltic ilmenite grains are usually less magnesian than their kimberlitic counterparts. Basaltic ilmenite contains very little Cr203. Pyrope garnet occurs as megacrysts and in a variety of xenolith lithologies in north Queensland basalts. Most basaltic garnet is Cr-poor and comparable with kimberlitic garnet from Groups 3 and 5 of Dawson and Stephens (1975). Wine-purple, chrome-bearing garnet is common in kimberlite but rare in basalt.

Testing of in situ seals in underground coal mines is critical to determine seal integrity and to provide safe working conditions. In the wake of the 2006 Sago Mine explosion, the United States of America (USA) promulgated the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response (MINER) Act (USDOL, 2006) which required mines to install 827 kPa (120 psi) rated seals or monitor and maintain the atmosphere behind existing 345 kPa (50 psi) seals. The purpose of developing the regulations was to prevent the breaching of seals in the event of an explosion in the sealed area.While seal design and construction is carefully regulated in practice, the construction of seals is difficult to monitor, as many are constructed under various mine conditions and the methods rely on prescribed placement of the seal material. Further examination of installed seals is limited to two-dimensional visual inspection and atmospheric and convergence measuring devices. These methods do not accurately reflect the integrity of the seal and cannot detect changes, deterioration, or defects within the seal.If detection of defects, deterioration and damage is not possible, unexpected communication between the active and sealed areas may result. Additionally, the ability of the seal to withstand explosions may be compromised. Non-destructive testing (NDT) of underground mine seals is necessary to investigate if the seal properties have been altered and if the seal remains functional as a barrier between active areas and sealed areas of the mine. The crystal geometry of the cubic-tetragonal interface after partial transformation of an indium-thallium alloy single crystal is described and a general theory is presented. The effects of applied stresses on this transformation are interpreted and the latent heat of transformation is obtained from observations of transformation under stress. A DIFFUSIONLESS phase transformation between face-centered cubic and face-centered tetragonal structures has been reported for the indium-thallium system by Bowles, Barrett, and Guttman1, 2 The transformation takes place at approximately 105 "C at 18 atomic pct Tl and 25°C at 23 pct Tl. In their study, Bowles, Barrett, and Guttman used poly-crystalline samples whereas in the present study single crystals were used to eliminate the transformation constraints imposed by adjoining grains. The use of single crystals made possible a comprehensive study of the effect of stress on the transformation. In the course of the work, it was possible to formulate a new method of analyzing dif-fusionless transformations (presented in this paper) which permits calculation of the geometry of the interphase interface from a knowledge of the crystal structures of the initial and final phases. The specimens were prepared from chemically pure thallium and 99.97 pct In which were weighed out to produce 3 to 4 grams of alloy of the desired concentration. The metal was placed in clean fused silica tubing, then melted, degassed and sealed under vacuum. (To obtain single crystals, it was found that both degassing and extreme cleanliness were essential.) Single-crystal specimens were grown by a modified Bridgman technique.8 pecimens were removed from the tube by dissolving the quartz in concentrated hydrofluoric acid which attacks the specimen very slowly. The specimen then was polished mechanically to produce four flat surfaces, electropolished, and annealed at 140°C for 48 hr. The electropolishing solution used was that described by Bowles, Barrett, and Guttman and the polishing was carried out on both the high and low temperature phases of the alloy. The high temperature polishing was done at 110°C with a stainless steel cathode. Visual Observation of the Transformation in Single Crystals A visual study of the transformation was made on specimens which had been electropolished in the high temperature phase. The specimens were supported on the stage of a metallograph by an electrically heated holder which contained an opening for observing the specimen. Visual evidence of transformation was found in the presence of an interface which separated the two phases. The interface plane defines the boundary of the phase undergoing transformation and manifests itself by the sharp change in angle between the surface of the specimen and the incident light at the juncture of the two phases. On slow cooling, well-annealed specimens transformed from the face-centered cubic structure to the face-centered tetragonal structure by the motion of a single plane interface which traversed the specimen from one end to the other. Upon heating, the interface moved back in the reverse direction. The interface could be started, stopped, or reversed at will. A temperature hysteresis of about 31/2oC was observed in the reversal of the interface. Holding an interface stationary caused it to disappear completely in most cases, whereas in other instances the interface became less distinct depending upon its orientation. The interface could be made to reappear by changing the temperature of the specimen. The low temperature tetragonal structure exhibits only the fine markings or subbands reported by Bowles, Barrett, and Guttman and is illustrated in Fig. 1. These subbands are twin-related. Back-reflection Laue patterns show the breakup of the cubic spots into pairs of spots corresponding to the twin orientations of the tetragonal phase.

To date. utility company underground storage of gas has generally been restricted to depleted dry gas fields. The Playa del Rey project is probably the first to successfully store gas in a partially depleted oil reservoir with the recovery of large volumes of pas at high rates as the main objective. Oil recovery has been a secondary consideration. Problems encountered unusual to those of storage in a dry gas zone were: (1) the removal and retardation of formation of emulsion. (2) the upstructure movement of fluid during withdrawal periods which formed fluid blocks, and (3) reservoir shrinkage resulting from encroachment of edgewater. The solution of these problems as outlined in the paper has resulted in increasing the withdrawal rate from the original design capacity of 4,000 Mcf per hour to the current 10.000 Mcf per hour. Additional increase is anticipated as the operations continue. Migration. reservoir performance. operational procedure and a historical record are included to make this a resume of the project from its war-time inception in 1942 to the first of 1952. INTRODUCTION The Playa del Rey underground gas storage project is probably the first project in which gas has been stored in a partially depleted oil reservoir, with the recovery of large volumes of gas at high rates as the main objective and the recovery of oil a secondary consideration. Problems unusual to those of storage in dry gas zones have made this a pioneer endeavor. The total storage capacity of approximately 1,500,000 Mcf of this reservoir is small in comparison with other underground gas storage projects. However. by study and experiment the deliverability into transmission lines. operating at pressures in excess of 150 lbs., has been nearly tripled in the past three years. to the current 10.000 Mcf per hour late, without the use of compression. It is anticipated this rate will gradually increase as additional fluid is removed from the formation. LOCATION AND HISTORY Playa del Key is located on Santa Monica Bay about two miles south of the beach commuity of Venice and 15 miles southwest of the renter of the City city Los Angeles. Fig. 1. The discovery well was completed at 6,194 ft in 1929. An upper zone at 3,905 ft was found on June 18. 1930. Townlot development was very rapid and by the end of 1930 there were 141 producing wells in the field. The Union Oil Co. completed a lower zone well south of the Townlot Field in May, 1931, which was believed to be an extension, until additional drilling of about 50 wells during 1934 and 1935 indicated this area to be a separate accumulation as shown on Fig. 2. The lower oil horizon, which is now the storage zone, had no original gas cap and is believed to be a continental detrital deposit of conglomerate that accumulated in valleys and depressions of a weathered schist high. which later subsided and was overlain by an impervious nodular shale. This type of formation has rapid variation of porosity. permeability and thickness due to lack of sorting action common to marine deposition. and the uneven surface of the original schist high. Production was limited on the upstructure sides by the pinching out of the conglomerate, and downstructure by edgewater. Unrestricted production, together with high permeabilities, led to large wastage of gas from this new area as facilities were not available for transport of gas to market. The decline was very rapid and by 1942 the portion of the new area south of Ballona Creek was nearly depleted. Plant and laboratory test work was performed in order to optimize a copper/zinc flotation separation circuit at Matagami concentrator, Canada. The testing identified a significant difference between the laboratory testing and the plant flotation, particularly for the sphalerite recovery in the rougher copper concentrate. Tests indicate that sphalerite recovery of the flotation concentrate in the laboratory testing was significantly higher than in the plant. The ToF-SIMS surface analysis identifies surface species responsible for the discrepancy in Zn recovery. It shows that sphalerite flotation is in response to the collector attachment and a significant enrichment of Cu on the surface of sphalerite grains. A comparative surface chemical analysis was performed on both sphalerite and chalcopyrite grains from the plant flotation and laboratory testing in order to identify surface species variability between the two testing. Two significant observations were revealed. First, there is considerably more hydrophilic iron oxyhydroxide on sphalerite surface from the plant flotation sample relative to those from the lab testing. The secondary coating likely completely or partially passivates sphalerite surfaces, reducing Cu enrichment and hence sphalerite floatability. Secondly, comparing the surface chemistry on sphalerite and chalcopyrite, the hydrophilic iron oxyhydroxide species have preference for the sphalerite grains relative to chalcopyrite. Despite numerous studies on the effect of galvanic coupling during grinding, there is limited documented evidence on the effect of the milling environment on the flotation and plant operations. This observation suggests that interaction between sulphide minerals and grinding media have a significant influence on subsequent flotation. This paper discusses the results of a detailed surface chemical evaluation of sphalerite grains from both the plant and laboratory testing in the context of grinding environments and pulp chemistry.

The only outstanding development in Montana oil or gas fields during 1935 was the extension of the Cut Bank oil and gas field 7 miles southward. This field is now about 20 miles long and 3 to 8 miles wide, with 218 producing oil wells and 39 producing gas wells. Average daily production of the oil field during December, 1935, was about 6700 bbl.; total production for the year 1935 was approximately 2,020,770 barrels. The Cut Bank field in northern Montana is in a flat to rolling glaciated area used mainly for grazing purposes. Oil and gas occurs in sandstones and shaly sandstones in the Kootenai (Dakota) formation of Lower Cretaceous age at depths ranging from 2700 to 3000 ft. Prominent anticlinal or domal structure is not present, but small plunging anticlines occur locally. Strata dip westward from 75 to 200 ft. per mile. The field lies on the western flank of the Sweetgrass arch, a broad gentle upwarp over 150 miles long. Localization of oil and gas appears to be due either to pinching or lensing out of the sandstone beds, or else silting of the sandstones with clay minerals so that porosity becomes low. Within the field offset wells show marked variation in initial production, which suggests that differences in porosity of sandstone is the controlling factor. The gas-producing portion of the field is entirely updip (east) from the oil-producing portion, and the producing horizons are the same. Initial production of oil wells ranged from about 50 to about 200 bbl. per day, and initial open flow of gas wells ranged from about one million to about 37 million cubic feet per day, with an average of 11 million cubic feet. Initial gas pressures were slightly greater than 700 lb. per sq. in. Oil is brought to the surface by pumping. Both rotary and standard churn-drilling equipment are used. In the remaining 14 oil and gas fields but little new activity took place other than the drilling of offset wells and wells in proven territory. Continuation of "acid treatment" of wells in the Kevin and Pondera oil fields led to reconditioning of many old wells and the drilling of a number of new wells within these fields. Acid treatment of the oil-bearing horizon, which is the dolomitized and silicified Madison limestone of Mississippian age, has proved quite satisfactory, and some "bone dry"

Traditionally, only the large mining companies have maintained specialist departments in such areas as Rock Mechanics, Ventilation and Safety. To the small companies this has been a luxury that they could ill afford. Any work required by such companies in these areas, more complex than could be handled by the existing staff, was done by consultants. This situation is changing though and there is a need arising for many specialist departments. These changes are partly being brought about by the effects of inflation as the ever increasing costs are causing more and more operators to increase the size of their operations in search of economies of scale. In addition though the plethora of new laws and regulations are creating a need for many more specialists in all areas of mining in order to ensure compliance. The abovementioned factors, added to the existing Pattern of mines endeavoring to improve the working environment for their labor force, both for reasons of practical labor relations and also due to further legislative pressures, have thus created a climate where, in the near future, departments such as Rock Mechanics, Safety, Ventilation, Environmental Engineering and Subsidence Control will be commonplace in mining companies. It will no longer be practical to function without such services. Many mining companies already maintain such departments and this has particularly been true of the big mining groups of South Africa. From the experience gained by many of these large companies with specialist departments, it is clear that the maintenance of a cadre of experienced, competent professionals in such a department has not always been easy. It would seem from the experience gained that one can generalise and state that graduate mining engineers tend not to view specilisation as an optimum direction for their career development. It is of course true that many professionals, especially those with higher than a bachelors degree, do view these areas as valid career options, but even here experience shows that wastage is high. The time therefore seems to be ripe to take a look at this area in some detail to see whether reasons for the problems can be isolated. Working from that some suggestions can be made as to directions in which improvements might be made. If the challenge of the demands of the new regulations are to be met then such improvements must be made.

G. A. Vissac (Consulting Engineer, Vancouver, B. C.) —Some of the data presented in this paper, in connection with cost studies of washed coals, should be clarified and qualified. Washing a raw coal down to a low ash content may mean higher losses in refuse, but the cost of the operation may be more than compensated by the increased value of the resultant product. However, careful engineering and accurate machinery are required to insure maximum profits. Washing at a low gravity separation demands a very accurate automatic process, chiefly when the small sizes of coal are being handled. Coal consumers today are buying mostly on a Btu basis, cognizant of the fact that low ash contents result in lower installation costs and in savings in handling and transportation charges. The attached Table X gives the actual balance sheets of the various cleaning operations corresponding to various ash contents for the two coals presented in the paper, using the old technique of a two-products separation. or the new technique, now commonly used in Europe, of a three-way separation made possible by new methods and new equipment. Savings in capital costs, handling, and transportation have been calculated on the basis of a delivered cost f.O.b. plant of $10.00 per ton of coal at 16.5 pct ash (actual 1953 average price reported by Consolidated Edison, N. Y.), and of $3.50 at the mine also for 16.5 pct ash coal. In both cases this corresponds to values of 126 and 4.26 per 1 pct of combustible and per ton, respectively, on delivered and on at the mine prices. As an example, the middle western coal at 16.5 pct ash, raw, washed down to 4 pct ash in a two-way process will give 53.75 pct of clean coal at 4 pct ash and 46.25 pct of refuse at 31 pct ash. The value of the losses will be 0.4625x(100—31)x0.042 = $1.34. Add the cost of washing, capital, and operation, which is $0.35. The total cost will then be $1.69. But with a three-ways separation we will have 53.75 pct of first-grade coal at 4 pct ash, 37.25 pct second-
