Spectroscopic techniques are becoming increasingly popular for characterizing the interior of adsorbed layers of surfactants and polymers at solid- liquid interface as well as in the identification of com- pounds on mineral surfaces. This review encompasses the application of fluorescence and ESR spectroscopic techniques to reveal the microscopic environment of the adsorbed layers of surfactants and polymers on minerals with a special reference to the adsorption of anionic surfactants (e.g., sodium dodecyl sulfate) and polyelectrolytes (e.g., polyacrylic acid) at positively charged mineral (e.g., alumina) - water interfaces. Finally, the utility of XPS and auger techniques to identify the surface elemental composition of different mineral species has been related to their flotation efficiency.

The Nelson province was chosen as the prime area for rhenium sampling, based on its mineral associations. Sample preparation involved benefication by grinding and flotation A modification of published procedures for rhenium analysis was developed and the results compared with those obtained for molybdenum on the same samples using atomic absorption spectroscopy. The results of the analysis for both metals is discussed and the relationships between rhenium and the molybdenum mineralisa- tion of this region is commented on. A metal- 1ngenic province is defined for molybdenum and r'.ienium and the tectonic setting for this is discussed. Some consideration has been given to rhenium possibilities in Fiordland and the Coromandel Range.

"A range of media alloys with different chromium content has been developed for different milling applications. When selecting the grinding media alloy for a specific application, consideration must be given to the mineralogy of the ore as well as the water chemistry and mill operating conditions. The paper describes the influence of the microstructure of the alloy on the wear resistance and the influence of the chrome content on the pulp chemistry and downstream processing. It also provides information about the in-house tools which Magotteaux have developed to predict the media wear rate with different chromium content alloys and predict their flotation efficiencies that can be expected when the right alloy is selected for a particular application."

The paper describes the propensity of tin to form intermetallic compounds with microalloying elements such as Nb, Ti and aluminium, which are commonly used as additions to achieve particular combination of strength and toughness. Two series of alloys were prepared by arc melting under an argon atmosphere. Each series was based on Fe, Sn and A1 with either Nb or Ti additions. The microstructures were studied using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and microprobe analysis. It was found that the level of Nb addition has an effect on the formation of Sn-rich compounds. For small Nb additions, no Sn containing compounds were found, whereas in higher Nb alloy, a Laves phase (FezNb, hexagonal, a = 0.4830 nm and c = 0.7879 nm) containing about 1 at % Sn was found. A FezNb3 phase (cubic, a = 1.1261 nm) associated with the formation of alumina was also found but did not contain tin. No Sn containing compounds were found with Ti additions. The experimental observations have been compared with thermodynamic calculations performed using MTDATA.

Engineered scavenger compounds (ESC's) developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines are a novel class of compounds that selectively can recover a desired element from a solid or molten alloy. Lithium titanate (L2Ti307 or Li2O?3Ti02) is used as an ESC to recover lithium (Li) from aluminum-lithium (Al-Li) alloys. X-ray diffraction measurements have shown that Li2Ti307 undergoes a phase change during scavenging from an orthorhombic structure to a hexagonal structure. This change is due to the incorporation of lithium in the matrix of the material and the effect of temperature. Although both phases are metastable, the hexagonal phase that forms during the scavenging of lithium from Al-Li alloys appears to be the more stable phase. Recovering lithium from the ESC by electrodeposition does not cause the structure to revert to the orthorhombic phase. The orthorhombic and the hexagonal structures of Li2Ti307 have similar scavenging capacities for lithium. This report proposes a new mechanism for the phase transformation.

INTRODUCTION On April 14, 1994, the joint venture of Kiewit Construction Company and Kenny Construction Company was awarded a 76 million dollar contract for the construction of the New Hampshire Avenue Tunnels in Washington D.C. The Notice to Proceed was given on May16, 1994 and scheduled completion is September 1997. This project is one of five contracts for the Mid-City E Line as part of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA)Greenbelt Route. Once completed, the Mid-City E Line subway tunnels will connect service between the U Street-Cardozo and Fort Totten stations (See Figure 1). The New Hampshire Avenue Tunnels project consists of approximately 6800 feet of twin single track subway tunnels, three vertical shafts, associated utility work and comprehensive restoration work. Section E4b involved two methods of tunneling along the project alignment. The first method consisted of the well known soft ground open face shield driven tunnel and the second method consisted of tunnels driven using the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) . The NATM section of twin tunnels begins at the Buchanan Vent Shaft and proceeds approximately 2630 feet under Rock Creek Cemetery, including the Farragut Emergency Access Shaft and connects approximately 390 feet beyond to the existing Fort Totten running tunnels (See Figure 2). Special considerations had to be given to the portion of the tunnel alignment which passed beneath Rock Creek Cemetery. The analyses and subsequent selection of the tunnel support system were based on anticipated geological conditions and the sensitive tunnel alignment. The New Hampshire Avenue Tunnels project was the second soft ground NATM project in Washington D.C. The first, by no coincidence, was completed at the adjacent Fort Totten Station and Running Tunnels Project by Mergentime/Hochtief, AJV. Currently, on a nearby WMATA jobsite, the J.F. Shea Construction Company has started a third NATM soft ground tunnel. A study of the fracture behavior of unidirectwn-ally solidified Cu-Cr eutectic alloy was performed. Fractured whiskers, grain boundaries, and the interface between proeutectic Cr dendrites and the Cu matrix were the predominant failure initiation sites where grain size was larger. Strain induced void formation was restricted at lower solidification rates. This was attributed to a lack of adequate plastic constraint and a probable preferred orientation. A modification of the Crussard et al. model is presented to explain the appearance of "elongated dimples" on the shear fracture surface. A Cu-Cr alloy containing about 1.8 at. pct Cr solidifies by a eutectic reaction forming filamentary crystals of chromium within a continuous copper solid solution matrix.' Webb and Forgeng2 have shown by bend tests that the extracted chromium filaments, which are ordinarily curved and branched (due to random solidification), have the high strengths associated with whiskers. If an ingot of the eutectic alloy is unidirectionally solidified and appropriate control exercised over the thermal gradient, growth rate, and impurity level, the chromium fibers can be forced to solidify as fibers which are substantially parallel to the growth direction, Fig. 1. Uniaxial tensile tests on these straight chromium fibers extracted from controlled ingots3 have confirmed the earlier bend test results on curved fibers. Combining the facts that the strength and modulus of the chromium filaments are higher than the more ductile copper matrix and assuming that a "good bond" exists between the two phases, the Cu-Cr controlled eutectic system fulfills the requirements for effective fiber reinforcement of ductile matrices as established by studies on fiber glass reinforced plastics and other two-phase systems.4 Therefore, it was decided to study the fracture characteristics of morphologically simple specimens of chromium fiber reinforced copper (i.e., specimens of the controlled eutectic with substantially parallel reinforcing fibers) with the objective of establishing the dominant aspects of fracture. PREVIOUS WORK Comparatively little work has been done to understand the manner in which ductile alloys fail be- cause of the limited demand for this kind of information. The need for the more accurate measurement of blasting results has increased substantially with the proliferation of the types of explosives available to mining operations in South Africa. The primary object of blasting is the production of broken rock of a specific size distribution. A method for the measurement of size distribution, more popularly known as fragmentation, is being developed at Sishen Iron Ore Mine, and the object of this paper is to describe the method briefly and so encourage an exchange of views on reliable methods. Once the fragmentation of broken rock can be assessed reliably, meaningful conclusions can be drawn from blasting trials. It will then be possible for equipment productivity to be related to muckpile properties, with the accompanying advantages.

The note describes an exercise on the simulation of the frequency and size of seismic events on the basis of the frequency distribution of the events and their inter-arrival times (Le. the frequency distribution of the time elapsed between events). From the suite of available results, those of one simulation for a period of three months are included. The tentative conclusions drawn from the exercise indicate that the overall seismic activity in an area can be predicted for a time period, that structurally complex areas will have a higher incidence of seismic events than other areas, and that the position and time of an event cannot be predicted by the use of a wide-spread system such as that used at present.

The 1100 Orebody is the main copper production area of Isa Mine with an output of 390 000 tonnes per four week period and a work force of approximately 260 men per shift. Currently a total of 56 nippers work a three shift, five day week roster to-service crews spread over a strike length of 1000 m and a vertical height of 220 in. A variety of rail and diesel equipment provides shaftto cribroom and cribroomto sublevel work place transport of men and materials. Overall eficiency and safety has been improved with a selected group performing supply, storage, clean-up and "bus runs" throughout the orebody - activities which are further co-ordinated by an FM radio system linking units with a control clerk.

The extraction of cerium(IV) by valence change with two-phase electrolysis was studied experimentally. The results show that the electro-oxidation extraction depends mainly on the distribution of the solute between the two phases, the reaction on the electrode surface and the diffusion of the reactant and product between the electrode and aqueous interphases. The effects of various parameters on cerium extraction were also studied. The selected parameters were background current, catholyte acidity, agitation speed, operation current and voltage and surfactant addition. The electro-oxidation extraction mechanism can be divided into eight steps. In addition, Wee the rate of extraction is quite fast, the percentage extraction Ce+4 can be taken as an index to show the conversion rate of Ce+3 J to Ce+4.

One of the major operating costs for any labor-intensive operation is that of its employees' wage and benefits package. Today's packages are extremely complex, with multiple pay rates for different grades and shifts, intricate bonus criteria, and expansive benefit packages that include all sorts of medical, dental, pension and other costs that can be "hidden" from direct examination and consideration. The problems of estimating the total cost of such a package to a company becomes even more acute at negotiation time, when pressure from both sides to settle intensify and changes to package offers come rapidly. A comprehensive system is needed that can evaluate these costs and perform sensitivity analyses, on the various components of an agreement so as to aid in the solving of major labor deadlocks, productivity problems, and cost impacts created by those agreements.

Relative cost to other systems: 30% to 50% more expensive than driven soldier piles and lagging except when surcharge loads are involved, or the pile cannot be driven due to noise and vibrations. About the same cost as a sheet pile system. Very competitive if high vertical load must be supported by the wall.

Coarse silica flotation from intermediate pebble (IP) product has been carried out a pilot plant Dual Extraction Column (DEC) at an operational phosphate mine in Central Florida. The solids feed rate ranged from 4.16 – 5.3 TPH while the amine dosages ranged from 0.32 – 0.93 lb/T. The optimum amine dosage when using recycled process water was deter-mined to be 0.6 lb/T. With a feed containing 40-45 BPL and 38-45% insol, the results show that the IP can be upgraded to 56-61 BPL and insol of 16-22% at 85-90% BPL recovery. The results show that the DEC is an effective device for flotation of coarse silica from the IP. The advantages of upgrading the IP prior blending with the pebble are presented and discussed.

Application of computer-based systems for ventilation process monitoring makes it possible to widen the system functions with those connected with long-term data analysis. It allows the mine ventilation engineer to carry out necessary preventive actions. In future the wide application of computers and sophisticated expert systems together with automation equipment (like remotely controlled regulators and fans) will allow to gradually introduce minewide systems for air flow control. To achieve this goal research work is carried out using data from a mine ventilation monitoring system and methods of computer analysis of time series. With the use of digital filtering the measuring signal spectrum has been divided into three subranges components of which are important with regard to various needs of mine ventilation staff as well as to monitoring and control system functions.

Modelling and scheduling for Grootegeluk coal mine, situated in the north- western Transvaal, is by means of a series of modular systems. Modelling of the multilayered body, which is part of the Waterberg coalfield, was based on a detailed study of the behaviour of coal and waste qualities and the sub- sequent use of standard geostatistical techniques. A notable improvement on previous methods was attained. Scheduling procedures and systems were developed to model a multibench pit producing coal for several metallurgical plants as well as a power-station. Scheduling was done by producing a series of longitudinal cuts, the cuts being subdivided into increments. By allocating cuts to certain periods, the resulting calculated product tonnages were com- pared with production targets, and by iteration a final scheduling sequence was determined.

SINCE Böhler discovered, in 1903, on cooling certain alloy steels, the phenomenon of a new and lower temperature transformation than the usual Ar3_2_1 obtained by increasing the maximum temperature to which the material was heated, much has been published' connecting this phenomenon with a large number of dissimilar steels of high alloy content. From the fact that the transformation divides itself, taking place at two widely separated temperatures, it has been called a "split transformation." The, significant facts established by recent investigators' are: that when the' transformation occurs at the higher temperature Ar', troostite or a decomposition product is formed, and that when the transformation occurs at the lower temperature Ar", the resulting structure is martensite. The terminology Ar' and Ar" adopted here is that of Portevin.3

This paper describes a major ventilation study for the expansion of the El Teniente mine operated by Codelco, Chile. El Teniente is one of the world's largest under- ground mines. The design effort was under- taken in three stages and involved a partial mine ventilation survey with network simula- tion, detailed stope ventilation investiga- tions, and design of the entire mine ventila- tion circuit based on production plans to achieve 112,000 tons per day by 1995. The partial ventilation survey provided values of representative friction factors and resistances for typical ventilation raises and airways. These values were used to conduct detailed modeling of the block caving levels to investigate the most cost effective and practical means of providing the required ventilation. The results of these analyses were extrapolated to the proposed expanded mechanized zones.
