In tnany oil and gas fields, significant investments are required in piping networks for collection, injection and disposal of various fluids. This paper treats the problem of optimally locating the trunkline(s) for a given systet to nlinimize both the total length of piping connecting the individual wells or lease batteries to the trunkline and the length of the latter. Single and multiple trunklines, varying line sizes, and grouping of wells are considered. Some attention is paid to the case of a curved trunkline. A field case is treated and conclusions are that the problem of locating a single trunkline is relatively straightforward while the location of multiple trunklines requires further research. INTRODUCTION la many oil and gas fields, significant investments are required in piping networks for collection, injection and disposal of various fluids. A single field may concurrently require piping systems for gathering of oil, gathering of gas, injection of water or gas and disposal of salt water. Two problems arise in the consideration of any one of these networks. The first involves the sizing of the various segments of the network to minimize piping and compression costs. The second problem, treated herein, is that of optimally locating the trunkline(s) for a given piping system to minimize the total length of pipe connecting the individual wells or lease batteries to the trunkline. This minimization problem may arise in field automation if it involves replacement of individual lease batteries by a central field battery which will require trunklines and connecting pipelines to individual wells. The problem also arises in connecting a gas pipeline through a subsidiary trunkline to wells in a gas storage field. The first analysis given below treats the case of a single trunkline and of separate connecting lines for all field units.* The analysis is then extended to consider multiple trunklines and common connecting lines for groups of field units. Varying sizes, and therefore costs, of the connecting lines are taken into account. A simplified development is given to illustrate the manner in which line sizing calculations may be integrated with the line placement problem. This study is primarily directed toward the placement of straight trunklines, although for certain field shapes or well distributions curved trunk-lines might be preferable. Some mathematical consideration is therefore given to the placement of a curved trunk-line in a field. The determination of optimal locations for two or more trunklines involves some difficulties which are discussed below. The need for further research in this area is emphasized. The problem of a single trunkline is solved in relation to an actual oil field. The problem of optimally locating two trunklines in the same field is also treated and the results are compared to the single-trunkline case. All calculations reported were performed on an IBM 7072 digital compker. The importance of right-of-way, roads and terrain in locating trunklines and connecting lines is realized. The present analysis is advanced on the premise that in planning piping networks one should start with the optimal conditions whenever possible and proceed therefrom.

The deformation of' impure beryllium crystals by basal glide at room temperature invariably tevminates by basal cleavage after a few percent strain. It is generally accepted that .fracture of this type is caused by the splitting of low) -angle boundaries, or bend planes, by obstacles that restrict the motion of the bed planes in the deforming crystal. The details of such a process have been developed by Stroh, who showed that the high tensile stress norrnal to the basal plane in the region where the bend plane is split results in the propagation of a basal cleavage crack, provided there is no available dejorvrlatzon mode having a shear component normal to the basal plane It has been postulated that puvification of beryllium might lead to increased basal ductility by the vemoval of barviers to bend plane motion and possibly by the activation of nonbasal defor~rlation systems. Large increases in the amount of basal glide that can he sustained prior to fracture have been observed in crystals purified by zone refining. In each case, eventudal fracture was by sharp basal cleavage, suggesting that the split bend plane model still applies to tile fracture of beryllium of rensonably high purity. In the present work, calculations are made to show to what extent basal duetilits can be increased by purification while the split bend plane .fracture process remains applicable. Experimentally observed ductilities are generally somewhat lower than those predicted by calculation because of premature failure due to defects introd~cced during specimen preparation and testing. SEVERAL investigators1-4 have studied the deformation characteristics of beryllium single crystals of commercial purity, and have related the strong anisotropy of plastic deformation in single crystals to the problem of brittleness in polycrystalline beryllium. For most orientations, the principal deformation mode is basal slip, which, at temperatures between 300" and 900°K, begins at a critical resolved shear stress of approximately 1500 g per sq mm and terminates after 3 to 6 pet glide strain by cleavage on the basal plane in the neighborhood of (1120) bend planes that are formed during the deformation. This type of fracture, which is also observed in zinc at low temperatures, has been interpreted by stroh5 to be caused by the splitting of bend planes by obstacles to their motion. In the Stroh model, a (11.20) dislocation wall, or bend plane, moving along the slip direction under the action of the applied stress, encounters obstacles which cause part of the bend plane to be held up, the other part continuing to move. Stress concentrations are built up in the region where the bend plane is split, with a high tensile component normal to the basal plane, resulting in a microcrack at the end of the split wall. Because no deformation mode having a shear component at an angle to the basal plane is available to relieve the stress at the crack tip, the crack can propagate under a sufficiently high applied stress. As a part of a general investigation of the separation of bitumen from hydrocarbon mixtures a study was made of a restricted quaternary system composed of methane, decane, tetralin, and bitumen. The work was limited to a pressure of 8000 psi, a temperature of 220 °F, and to a fixed relative proportion of decane, tetralin, and bitumen. The measurements permitted the determination of the distribution of these components in each of the fluid phases. It was not possible to distinguish a second liquid phase in the course of these measurements. Gas-liquid equilibrium "constants" of each of the components were found to vary markedly with the composition of the system while temperature and pressure remained fixed. INTRODUCTION The separation of bitumen frorn naturally occurring hydrocarbon mixtures has been of importance for a number of years in the production of petroleum, especially in the California area. The deposition of this material from crude oils was noted in earlier studies of the solubility of natural gas in crude oil.¹,²,3 Studies of the separation of bitumen from crude oils from the Greeley and Santa Fe Springs fields were carried out."." The behavior of these systems appeared complex and studies of two restricted ternary systems involving mixtures of n-pentane, tetralin, and bitumen,' and of decane, tetralin; and hitumen, confirmed this belief. Reviews of the literature pertaining to the separation of bitumen from naturally occuring and refined hydrocarbons are available." The important effect of methane in the separation of bitu- men from naturally occurring hydrocarbon mixtures was apparent from the earlier studies and for that reason it appeared desirable to investigate a restricted quarternary system involving mixtures of methane. decane, tetralin, and bitumen; data concerning the behavior of mixtures of decane. tetralin. and bitumen having already been obtained.V his study was restricted to a pressure of 8000 psi," a temperatue of 220° F, and fixed relative proportions of bitumen, decane. and tetralin. This composite constituent, hereinafter designated as the less volatile constituent, was made up of 0.0455 weight fraction bitumen. 0.0909 weight fraction decane, and 0.8636 weight fraction tetralin. The experimental method involved bringing together mixtures of methane and the less volatile constituent in varying proportions in a constant volume container at the pressure and temperature indicated above. The composition of each of the phases was determined and from this the extent of the separation of bitumen was established. MATERIALS The bitumen used in this investigation was obtained from the same stocks employed in earlier studies. The crude material from the North Coles Levee field was stored in the laboratory] in a closed drum for a period of five years. Several samples from this stock were subjected to refining operations which were described earlier,' and every effort was made to follow the same procedure in all cases. It was necessary to prepare supplies of bitumen for this investigation at two rather widely different times. These materials have been identified as samples 1 and 2. The basal stress-strain behavior, dislocation density, and strain vale sensitivity of the flow stress uqere measured at room temperature on single crystals oj-zone-refined zinc , 99.999 pct Zn, and zinc containing 0.0025 and 0.02 wt pct Al. No significant change in the stvain rate sensitivity of the flow stress occurs with the addition of aluminum. Changes in dislocation substructure and nonbasal dislocation density were obserrled with the addition of aluminum. The effect of aluminum on the basal slress-strain behavior is explained in terms of changes in nonbasal dislocation density which determines the separation distance of junctions between basal and nonbasal dislocations. The onset of basal slip is associated with the breaking of attractive junctions. The chunge in basal dislocation density was found to be proportional to the one-third power of the plastic shear strain, indepedent of purity. THE effect of impurities in solid solution on the stress-strain behavior of single crystals has been the subject of many theoretical studies. These studies have generally concentrated on the interactions between impurities and dislocations to explain the hardening effeet of impurity additions. The theories that have been proposed include those of yott and Nabarro,&apos;l&apos; Cott-re11; Suzuki; and Fisher. In practice, it is generally difficult to predict the relative importance of the vari- ous effects due to impurities. In addition, secondary effects of impurity additions such as induced changes in dislocation density and substructure in the as-grown crystals have received little attention. Many experimental investigations have been conducted on the effect of impurities on the stress-strain behavior of fcc crystals. Hcp crystals have not received much attention except for the extensive work of Levine et a1.= on magnesium alloy crystals. Stuwe~&apos;&apos; has studied the effect of copper impurity on the critical shear stress of zinc crystals and has interpreted the results in terms of the impurity atmosphere model of Cottrell and Jaswon. This report presents the results of an experimental study of the effect of aluminum additions to zinc on the basal stress-strain curve and the strain rate sensitivity of the flow stress. Etch pit techniques were used to measure and characterize the dislocation density and substructure in the zinc alloy crystals. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Specimen Preparation. Compression test specimens of four different purities of zinc were prepared from CP grade zinc of 99.999 pct purity obtained from the New Jersey Zinc Co. An analysis of this material furnished by the supplier indicated the following impurities in wt ~ct: Pb = 0.0002; Fe = 0.0002; Cd = 0.00005; other <0.60011. A quantity of material of this grade was further purified by zone refining. Zone refining was carried out under a helium atmosphere by passing a double &apos;One furnace Over a 6-ft-10ng charge at the rate of 2 in. Per hr. * total of ten double zone passes were made before the charge was removed from the furnace. The first one third of each charge was used to grow single crystals. Quantities of two

Interpretation of presently available geological information indicates that most of the periods of significant metal deposition in the Washington Cascades Range are, at least in part, genetically related to late Cretaceous -Tertiary intrusive episodes. Chemically, the most favorable environment for base metal deposition is high in potassium. Characterizing the advanced stages of these chemical alteration conditions are the silicate mineral assemblages orthoclase and/or secondary biotite. Wall rock alteration includes both deuteric and hydrothermal processes, the intensity of which primarily depends upon the degree of fracturing in the country rock prior to the introduction of secondary material. Broadly speaking, the primary physical controls for the distribution and concentration of sulfides appear to be a series of structural couples involving both northwest (paralleling regional trends) and northeast--striking systems. Meaningful base metal exploration in the Washington Cascades demands a basic understanding of the various geologic factors related to the distribution of the sulfide deposits. Any geologist contemplating Cascade work should be well grounded in the fundamental concepts of petrology and structure.as these constitute two of his most beneficial aids. The acquisition of the detailed data necessary for this understanding may seem a bit academic, yet it has been demonstrated in numerous instances that a fair economic appraisal of a particular property or mining district depends primarily upon the ability of the geologist to recognize the subtle environmental differences which could lead to the discovery of a major ore deposit.

During the cyanide leaching process, gold and silver ores that come from the transition zones, which typically contains low levels of sulfide, may produce one or more of the following reduced sulfur species: sulfide ( HS−), polysulfides ( Sn 2−), thiocyanate ( SCN−), thiosulfate ( S2O3 2−), trithionate ( S3O6 2−), tetrathionate ( S4O6 2−), pentathionate ( S5O6 2−), hexathionate ( S6O6 2−). The actual speciation of the reduced sulfur species in the circuits will primarily depend on the redox potential, pH, cyanide levels, and existing sulfur species in recycled process water, as well as the presence of other reactive metal species. The development of an accurate analytical method for sulfur species in cyanide leaching units of gold ores where sulfur speciation occurs has an important role in explaining the metal recovery deviations. This study presents the speciation of sulfur species and the development of ion chromatography method to analyze reduced sulfur species thiocyanate ( SCN−), thiosulfate ( S2O3 2−), trithionate ( S3O6 2−), tetrathionate ( S4O6 2−) in cyanide leaching circuits for gold ores. The method developed has resulted in precise quantification of target sulfur species in leach solutions. Method development and validation results were illustrated on analytical graphs containing each species’ peak number, retention time (min), type, width (min), area (mAU*s), height (mAU), and area distribution (%) of the peak.

The rate of reduction of silica to silicon by carbon at 1550° to 1700°C in iron blast-furnace type slag-metal systems has been investigated. In the tower portion of the temperature range oxygen transport in the metal boundary layer at the slag-tal interface is probably rate limiting. A second step, which apparently involves a chemical process in the slag at the slag-metal interface, appears to be rate limiting when the oxygen-transport limitation is avoided. Above 1650°C rate control of the reduction by carbon probably is mixed between the two steps. INVESTIGATIONS1.2 into the equilibrium distribution of silicon between graphite-saturated slags and metals typical of iron blast-furnace practice show that, under the experimental conditions specified, the reduction of silica to silicon is relatively slow compared with the rates of other slag-metal reactions under similar conditions. For this reason, the reduction of silica in blast-furnace slag-metal systems was considered to be an interesting subject for further study. Investigations of the kinetics of the reaction3-5 suggest that several possible steps may be rate controlling, and that the rate-controlling step depends not only on the physical state of the systems but also on the configuration of the apparatus. The main objects of the investigation reported here were to sug- gest plausible reaction paths for the reduction of silica under the experimental conditions chosen and to determine the step or steps which control the rate of reduction of silica. EXPERIMENTAL Two types of experiments involving the reduction of silica from the slag were carried out. In the first, the only reducing agent present was carbon (graphite), for which the over-all reaction is (SiO2) +2C(gr) —Si + 2Co(g) [l] The second type was a graphite-saturated ferro-silicon-iron concentration cell. In it silica in the slag could be reduced either by carbon according to Eq. [I], or by a reaction of electrochemical nature in which silicon was oxidized at the ferrosilicon-slag interface and silica was reduced at the slag-iron interface without the formation of CO. The two types of experiment are described below. Reduction of Silica with Carbon as the Only Available Reducing Agent. The reduction of silica was accomplished by allowing a liquid lime-alumina-silica slag and graphite-saturated iron to react in an induction-heated graphite crucible. The crucible was 2.25 in. diameter and 5 in. deep; it was fitted with a graphite stirrer which penetrated through the slag and into the metal, Fig. 1. The slag and metal charges weighed 350 g each. Pure carbon monoxide at a pressure of 1 atm was maintained above the melt by passing the purified gas through the crucible at a rate of 0.5 liter per min. The gas did not stir either the slag or metal. Temperature measurements were made by sighting an optical pyrometer down the hollow stirrer rod into a 1/4-in. hole drilled in the stirrer blade. Most of the experimental observations were at atmospheric pressure or at 200 psi." However, some experimental measurements were carried out at a pressure of approximately 8000 psi. It was found that the purified bitumen was precipitated from its solution or dispersion in tetralin by the addition of n-pentane and that the separation occurred at lower weight fractions of n-pentane at the lower temperatures. The bitumen-tetralin solutions show some colloidal characteristics at temperatures below 160 °F when near compositions at which the bitumen separates as a solid phase. At states remote from the phase boundaries and at temperatures above 160 °F these characteristics become less evident. Under these latter circumstances the mixtures tend to follow the behavior of true solutions, particularly in regard to the approach to heterogeneous equilibrium. An increase in pressure appears to increase the solubility of bitumen in tet-ralin-n-pentane solutions. This effect is more pronounced at temperatures above 160 °F than at lower temperatures. Such depositions occurring underground appear to have caused adverse production histories for particular wells or zones. Because of this field experience, it is desirable to understand the factors which influence the formation or separation of the asphaltic phases from petroleum. The problem is unusually complex because the number of true components involved is very large and the details of the phase behavior encountered are difficult to ascertain experimentally. The literature relating to asphalts, asphaltines, and bitumen is voluminous and widespread.&apos; Only those references which are directly pertinent to the work at hand are cited. The separation of an asphaltic phase, hereinafter called bitumen? from naturally occurring hydrocarbon mixtures has been the subject of several investigations.2&apos;3&apos;4&apos;5&apos;6 It has been found that as many as four phases4 may be produced from a crude oil by the solution of a natural gas and propane at a pressure of 1500 psi and a temperature of 70 °F. The separation of bitumen from such naturally occurring mixtures results in at least one liquid phase which is substantially free of high molecular weight components.³ The influence of the solution of lighter hydrocarbons on the separation of bitumen from a Santa Fe Springs crude oil has been investigated. The results indicate that in the case of the methane-crude oil system, the quantity of plastic or solid phase separated reaches a maximum between 0.14 and 0.19 weight fraction methane and then decreases until negligible at higher weight fractions of methane. Similiar behavior was encountered in the case of mixtures of ethane and crude oil. The decrease in the quantity of the solid phase with an increase in the weight fraction of the lighter component appears to result from the formation of an additional liquid phase6 in which the bitumen is relatively soluble. The formation of this additional phase probably occurs at a weight fraction of methane close to that at which the quantity of separated solid reaches a maximum. A comparison of the deposition of bitumen in the field with the separation of asphalts from lubrication oil has been made&apos; and apparently the phenomena are similar. The phase behavior of bitumen also appears to be comparable to that of coal tar."&apos; The chemical and physical characteristics of asphalts and bitumen have been the subject of extended investigations which have been reviewed in some detail by Katz.¹º The conclusion was reached that the dispersion of bitumen in a number of organic liquids was not entirely colloidal since it was impossible to isolate individual dispersed particles even with the electron microscope. However, the evidence appeared to indicate that at states close to phase boundaries the extent of the dispersion of the phases influenced the equilibrium to a greater extent than is encountered in many simpler systems. From earlier study of field samples it became apparent that the phase behavior of bitumen-hydrocarbon systems was unusually complex. It was difficult to characterize in detail the phase behavior involved in naturally occurring hydrocarbon systems, even after a relatively extended investigation. For this reason, the study of a somewhat simpler system which still behaved in a similar manner became desirable. Water based paint formulations consist of some industrial minerals with quantities varying from 20 to 50 %. Quality of paint is directly related to these minerals used as pigment or filler in the production. Titanium dioxide is the most important and expensive pigment in paint formulations. Other minerals such as calcite and calcined kaolin are used as filler and mainly as a substitute for TiO2. Consequently, particle-particle interactions including adsorption, coating and size distribution of pigment mixture directly affects the paint quality. In the present paper, a new type of pigment mixture for possible use in architectural water based paints was developed through grinding. The effect of different types of grinding methods on physical properties of TiO2 and calcite mixture and the quality of paint produced by these mixtures have been revealed. Three different types of mills; conventional ball mill, vibratory ball mill and high-speed attritor were used for grinding of TiO2 and calcite. Viscosity, zeta potential and particle size distributions were used to characterize the pigment mixtures obtained upon grinding. The quality of paint was evaluated by standards based on both wet and dry paints such as viscosity, density, opacity and gloss. The paint produced with the pigment mixtures prepared in vibratory ball mill and high speed attritor showed improvement in physical properties particularly in the distribution and dispersion of mineral particles. Success in the use of the Eötvös torsion balance method of mapping geologic structure depends largely on the accuracy in the interpretation of the observed results. Skill in that interpretation depends (1) on the knowledge of the types of the variation of gravity, the gradient of gravity horizontally, and of the differential curvature produced by bodies of different sizes, shapes, dimensions, and densities; (2) on the knowledge of the possible types of structural bodies which might produce the observed anomalies; (3) on the empirical knowledge gained by experience not only in the geological interpretation of torsion balance surveys, hut of interpretations of inadequate geological data; and (4) on a knowledge of the possible and probable types of geologic structures in the area of the survey. The knowledge of the anomaly which a known body will produce and conversely the knowledge of the body or bodies which will produce a known anomaly may be gained by empirical experience and by mathematical study. The knowledge gained by empirical experience is fragmentary and inexact. The geology of most structures actually is known very superficially. The surface geology may be known accurately. If the structure is petroliferous, the subsurface geology of the oil field will be known down to 3000, 4000, 5000 ft. or in a few oil fields down to 7500 ft., but the deeper geology will be unknown and the metamorphic, igneous, or massive limestone basement below the reach of the drill may contrast sharply in density with the overlying sediments. Away from the oil field, the subsurface geology is known only from scattered drill holes, which do not go to the basement. A fair but not necessarily accurate knowledge of the geology of the nonproductive area can be obtained by correlation of the wells but the degree of its accuracy in general is proportional to the density of the occurrence of the wells. The geology below the bottom of the wells however is unknown. An anomaly mapped by the torsion balance is the sum of the effects of the contrasts in mass of its whole geologic surroundings. If the dimensions of a body of abnormal density are large enough, depth or distance makes no difference in the effects on the gradient and differential curvature; and as a matter of fact, in many places, the basement and irregulari-

The use of gas stirring systems through the furnace bottom is common for anode and holding furnaces in the copper industry The first implementation of a gas stirring COP KIN® system in a Peirce-Smith converter was performed at the New Boliden smelter, Rönnskar, Sweden. In addition to other benefits, a decrease in process time and a decrease of the oxygen content in the blister copper were observed. To determine the effects of the gas stirring system and the process endpoint, an optical production control ?Semtech OPC system? was used. The light emission of the converter flame as an optical process parameter provides qualitative on-line process information, and is also used for endpoint determination of the slag making process, on-line control of iron content in white metal, quality control of slag etc. The results, benefits and risks of using the COP KIN® and OPC system for a Peirce-Smith converter are reported.

This paper will review the experiences of both big and small exploration/mining companies (local and foreign investors), including the impediments to exploration and project development in Indonesia since the Contract of Work was first introduced there (1967 Minerals, 1981 Coal). This is seen through the eyes of a person who has been employed in a managerial capacity in large and small concerns, and more recently as an independent consultant. Comment will be made on the political, legislative and social constraints imposed by the presence of a large group of disparate artisans (illegal miners) who now form a significant component of the Indonesian mining industry; the Bre-X debacle; the impact of the recent Regional Autonomy legislation; and changes to the Mining, Forestry and Environmental Acts. An overall view (including statistics) will be presented as to how recent Indonesian developments have affected international confidence in investing in its mineral sector over the past decade and it will be placed in an international competitive context.

Procedures for particle size analysis on respirable dust from coal mines have been evaluated. Using respirable dusts dispersed in a laboratory dust chamber, size distributions measured using cascade impactors have been com- pared with the results of a variety of laboratory sizing methods performed on samples collected on filters placed side-by-side with the impactors. The laboratory techniques included centrifugal sedimentation, laser diffraction/scattering and automatic particle counting. The general agreement among the various methods was very good, with systematic differences which can be attributed to the different definitions of size used. Simple conversion factors have been obtained which can be used to transform the laboratory data to equivalent aerodynamic sizes. Similar comparisons have been made on samples collected in underground coal mines. Again, the results are in quite good agreement although small discrepancies were observed in some cases. These have been attributed to some degree of agglomeration in the airborne dust, leading to slightly coarser apparent distributions in the impactor samples.

Nuclear power stations to be installed in Australia will be fuelled from Australian resources of raw materials.This will require the establishment of new manufacturing industries and the eventual expansion of established activities, especially in uranium mining and the preparation of precision metal products.This paper presents some predictions of the possible growth of nuclear power installations in Australia.These might amount to 4000 MWE by 1985 and 11,500 MWE by 1990 and towards the end of the century, about 50 per cent of new generating plant might be nuclear.Predictions are given of the demands for materials (uranium and zirconium) and fuel manufacturing services for four reactor systems which might be considered in the programme.The availability of raw materials and technical capability place Australia in a particularly good position to undertake the manufacture of nuclear fuel; in addition to satisfying the domestic demand we should actively seek export markets for these products.

The mining industry internationally seems on the verge of a major underground support revolution as suppliers, mines, consultants and researchers develop, test and use thin support (structural) membranes (or superskins as they are commonly called) mainly as a replacement for screen/wire mesh. Thick membrane support in the form of shotcrete (sprayed concrete) has been used since the 1950s in underground mines. Shotcrete, in mines, is generally applied at a thickness between 25 and 100 mm depending on the need. Thin membranes are however applied at a typical thickness between 2 and 6 mm. Certain thin membranes have been available for several years (Tannant et al, 1999), but the intense interest in such supports has only grown in the last few years. The interest lies mainly in the potential to safely reduce the mining cycle time and hence improve productivity. There is however considerable confusion concerning such supports, and this paper attempts to clarify certain aspects and dispel certain misconceptions and myths about thin support membranes.

Many epithermal gold-silver deposits areknown to occur in the Neogene-Quaternary volcanic complex of the central Andean region of southern Peru, northern Chile, western Bolivia, and north-western Argentina, an area of about 300,000 km2 where these volcanic rocks constitute the dominant cover. Some of the gold-silver deposits were mined during Spanish colonial times, as early as the 16th century,- whereas others were not discovered until the 19th and 20th centuries. The extraordinary gold-silver potential of this young volcanic complex, however, was not recognized until the 1970&apos;s when the phenomenal increase in gold and silver prices stimulated new exploration. New discoveries were made, chiefly in southern Peru and northern Chile, of high-grade ores in old mining districts and large low-grade ore bodies, both in old districts and in new areas having no history of mining activity. Many additional gold and silver deposits remain to be discovered within and beneath the young volcanic complex of this region.

I read a book the other day called Opportunity 2000. The book, Opportunity 2000, talks about what&apos;s going to happen in the next nine or ten years as we propel ourselves through the 1990s into the 219 century. The book, Opportunity 2000, is a futuristic book, somewhat like Megatrends. It said that by the year 2000, baby boomers will be old people, and when you got here before the baby boomers, how does that make you feel? It said that there will be more women in the American work place by the year 2000 than men. The book, Opportunity 2000, discusses diversity. The big challenge for the 1990s is ?diversity?. We&apos;ll have the D-word in the 1990s. We had the G-word in the 1980s ? ?global.? Diversity in terms of more immigrants, more minorities, more females into the American work place, but also value systems diversity. We&apos;ll have to deal and adapt to four different generational clusters in dealing and interacting with employees and management in the 1990s-value systems diversity. This paper analyzes the opinion in Bragg v. Robertson, 72 F.Supp. 2d 642 (S.D. W.Va. 1999), a case which threatens the future of surface mining in West Virginia and which will almost certainly result in new policies or rules that will affect surface mining everywhere. This paper addresses: (1) the jurisdictional bases of the action which relies on the federal surface mining laws to enforce a state mining program; (2) settlement agreements reached in the case that threaten to alter federal policies beyond West Virginia borders; (3) a programmatic environmental impact statement on mountaintop mining being undertaken by the federal government; and (4) an opinion by the Court outlawing excess spoil disposal in intermittent and perennial streams.
