The manufacture and treatment of metals comprises operations whose effectiveness depends in large measure upon diffusion phenomena. The significance of such phenomena has, for a few simple cases, long been understood, but in more complex cases it has not been adequately recognized. This paper presents a mathematical analysis of some of the cases in which diffusion leads to the formation of a new phase within the metal, and this analysis provides a basis for interpreting quantitatively many apparently diverse experimental observations recorded in the literature, some of which are outlined in the following pages. OBservt1ons Recorded in Literature An outstanding instance is the general type of phenomenon in which diffusion of an element into an alloy is followed by a phase change, which most frequently is a reaction (precipitation) of the diffusing element with one or more components of the alloy to form a compound. Thus in certain alloys heated in contact with oxygen not only the usual oxide scale appears but, in addition, beneath the surface, a well-defined zone in which free oxide particles are dispersed with notabIe uniformity. This zone, commonly referred to as the subscale or zone of internal oxidation, is remarkable in that the visible boundary between it and the unaltered metal is usually sharp. Such a subscale, which appears to have been recognized first in oxidized copper alloys, has been described and studied by C. S. Smith,l by Rhines,2 and by Rhines, Johnson and Anderson;3 but it appears also in other alloys when they are exposed to conditions that bring about the precipitation of some compound, not necessarily an oxide. Another clear case of this same kind is the diffusion of carbon into a steel containing an element such as molybdenum, chromium, vanadium or tungsten, whose carbide is less soluble in iron than iron carbide, the result being that some part of that element is precipitated as a dispersed carbide. A similar phenomenon may occur on the welding of two alloys each of which contains one of a pair of elements that react to form a compound or a new phase of any sort. But in addition to the precipitation of a compound formed from the diffusing element, other effects may result merely from the presence of the diffusing element. For instance, if homogeneous austenite, nearly saturated with respect to carbon, is heated in contact with silicon in the absence of oxygen, one would expect to find, behind the several iron-silicon phases analogous to a scale, a zone of austenite containing dispersed carbide, because of the fact that silicon decreases the solubility of carbon in iron. As still another example, oxidation of an alloy may result in diffusion toward the surface of one or more of the constituents; for instance, during oxidation of a steel containing an element such as "copper, which is less prone to oxidation than iron, there is a notable enrichment of copper just beneath the scale-metal interface. "INTRODUCTION The primary object of this investigation was to determine changes in physical and chemical properties of subbituminous lump coal while in storage for 8 months in a typical residence and to demonstrate how this fuel may be stored without degradation or spontaneous combustion. The second object of the study was to determine how the stored coal performed in a hand-fired furnace operated under practical conditions.The investigation revealed that if care is exercised in placing sub-bituminous lump coal in a closed bin, no significant slacking or degrada¬tion occurs, no hazards arise, and over-all indicated efficiencies of about 65 to 69 percent can be obtained under practical,firing conditions that the average home owner can meet.Owing to the war emergency, much attention is being given to the proper storage of coal, and campaigns are being conducted to increase the quantity of coal being stored to relieve transportation and production overloads. Ordinarily, coal dealers do not recommend storage of subbituminous coal in homes owing to deterioration of the coal and to possible hazards from spontaneous combustion. This practice has grown from some troubles that have been experienced, which can be traced to improper preparation, improper bins, and poor technique in placing coal in a bin. There is no good reason why subbiturninous lump coal cannot be stored safely in homes."

Used as a classifier in a plant expanding capacity or changing to closed-circuit operation, the liquid-solid cyclone offers the advantage of being adaptable to existing conditions. This paper presents the costs involved and experience gained from operating a unit of this kind. BY now application of the liquid-solid cyclone to various classification problems in the chemical and metallurgical fields is more or less familiar. A less publicized application receiving wider consideration as time goes on is its use as a classifier in closed-circuit grinding operations. This paper presents the costs involved and the experience gained from operating a unit of this kind. In May 1951 the Tennessee Copper Co. installed in its London mill at Copperhill, Tenn., a liquid-solid cyclone in closed circuit with a 6x12-ft ball mill. The circuit in which this cyclone is used is the regrind or secondary grinding circuit of a copper flotation plant. Originally it consisted of a 7x1-ft conical ball mill in closed circuit with a bowl classifier. Changes made in the primary grinding circuit of the mill necessitated a regrind circuit of greater capacity. The bulk concentrate to be ground was raised from 900 or 1000 tpd to 1200 or 1300 tpd, and to accommodate this increase a 6x12-ft ball mill which had been in the primary grinding circuit was moved into the regrind circuit. When this was done it was found that the classifier was too small to give efficient operation. Space in the plant was at a premium, and since use of the cyclone offered considerable economy the installation shown in Figs. 1-3 was made. The unit installed is a 24-in. diam cyclone classifier with a 20" cone angle. Diameter of the vortex finder is 8 in., the feed entrance area 20 sq. in. Maximum diameter of the adjustable apex valve is 6 in. and minimum diameter approximately 3.5 in. To refer again to Figs. 1 and 2, the cyclone* is mounted motor. It is charged with 18 tons of 1-in. balls. The overflow, or fines, passes by gravity directly to the copper flotation plant. The ball mill discharge and the new feed combine in a sump from which they are sent to the cone by an 8x6 SRL pump at a rate of 497 gpm. Pressure at the cyclone is 5 psi. For reasons dictated by the nature of the ore treated, particularly the bonding of fine grains of chalcopyrite to pyrrhotite, the froth from the second cell of the copper rougher circuit is returned to the regrind mill. This flow, which somewhat complicates the standard closed-circuit calculation, is seen in Fig. 1 to be 156 tpd of solids. This combines with the cyclone classifier underflow to constitute the ball mill feed. The requirement of the regrind product is that it be 77 to 80 pct —200 mesh. The liquid-solids cyclone operating in conjunction with the 6x12-ft mill adequately met this requirement. Of primary importance is the fact that this arrangement provided sufficient classification capacity to replace the undersized classifier and was capable of building up a circulating load to 87 pct, large enough to give an efficient grind. In this instance the circulating load is taken as the ratio of sands to new feed. Any comparison of performance between this liquid-solid cyclone and the replaced classifier would of course be unfair, since the bowl classifier was

While underground coal technology has progressed over time, regulations on coal dust have not kept up ? the most recent rules are more than 80 years old. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the Mine Safety and Health Administration conducted a joint survey recently on coal particle ranges as measured in US coal mine samples. In underground coal mines, dust explosions are prevented by the addition of enough rock dust (usually limestone) to make the total dust mixture inert. The rock dust acts as a heat sink for the dispersed dust mixture by reducing the temperature below the value needed to propagate an explosion. Federal regulations require 65% in combustible content in intake airways and 80% incombustible content in return airways, where the coal dust is assumed to be finer in size. The regulations also require an additional 1% incombustible for each 0.1% methane in the ventilating air in intakes and 0.4% additional incombustible for each 0.1% methane in returns.

One hundred eleven pyrite samples from three porphyry-type deposits in the Canadian Cordillera were analyzed (many in duplicate) by AA spectrophotometry for Co, Ni, Cu, Pb, Zn and Mn. All elements have density distributions that are lognormal or combinations of lognormal populations. Co and Ni in pyrites show zonal patterns that relate generally to mineralogical zones in the porphyry systems, particularly if contoured as the Co/Ni ratio. High Cu and Mn values in pyrites also correlate with Cu-rich mineralogical zones. Other elements studied appear less regular in their distribution patterns, although Pb and Zn highs in pyrite seem to occur sporadically near the margins of porphyry systems. These data considered with two other studies permit construction of an empirical model for the distribution of certain minor elements of pyrites from porphyry systems of the calc-alkalic suite. In particular cases pyrite geochemistry shows potential as an exploration tool to aid in target definition for detailed exploration.

Use of PVDs and preloading on the ground can significantly reduce the time taken for ground to consolidate. Many soils in situ are lightly overconsolidated, with overconsolidation ratios (OCR) ranging from 1.0 to 2.0 due to various reasons such as glaciation, ground water level fluctuation, aging, cyclic loading, creep, erosion, cementation, etc. The effects of overconsolidation ratio are analysed in this study. Compression index and consolidation coefficient are important parameters in determining time – settlement response of soft soils under preloading and with PVDs. These parameters are typically estimated using oedometer tests on samples, with the assumption that the results represent the entire deposit. The in-situ time-settlement plots at different depths are used in the back analysis for estimating compressibility and consolidation parameters of in situ ground, resulting in more representative values that reflect the deposit's overall behavior. From observed time versus settlements plots, variations of compression index and coefficient of consolidation with depth of a deposit are presented. Estimation of compression index with depth is possible based on different OCR values as shown in this study. Barron (1948), Asaoka methods are used to estimate the coefficient of consolidation with flow in the radial direction.

THE MAGNITUDE of the drainage problem of the anthracite industry in Pennsylvania's Western Middle field is realized when it is known that in 1951 nine pumping plants in this field pumped nearly 36 billion gallons of water to the surface. This is almost 68,000 gallons per minute pumped against an average hydrostatic head of 350 feet for that year alone. In 1948 over 20,000 gallons per minute was pumped by relay pumps against an average hydrostatic head of 265 feet. In addition to the water pumped to the surface, it is estimated that 15,000 gallons per minute overflows to the surface from underground pools in idle mines. The volume (second-feet) of water pumped and overflow water is almost 1;z times the, average mean flow of the Schuylkill River at Pottsville for the 8-year period 1944--51 (7, 13).4 Mahanov and Shamokin Creeks drain an area of 99 square miles in the Western Middle field, and all surface drainage in this area must traverse some part, of the coal measures before entering these streams. On the basis of 46.03 inches of rainfall (the weighted average of 6 recording stations for 1948), the runoff from the drainage area during that period was 51 billion gallons, approximately 1 times the volume of water pumped by all mine-pumping plants in the Western Middle field. In other words, because of the pervious strata overlying the mine workings, approximately two-thirds of the total runoff in the drainage, area becomes mine water tributary to the pumping plants.

The stripping of coal with mechanical. equipment has progressed since the introduction of the first steam-powered shovel for the retóval of overburden at a mine in Pittsburg, Kans., in 1877...From the smart steam-powered shovels with dippers of less than a cubic yard capacity, small digging radius, and shovels that required manual moving, the trend has been toward large-capacity machines. Steam as power has been replaced largely by electricity, gasoline, and Diesel fuel, and dipper capacity as great as 35 cubic yards has been attained. Shovels and drag lines are self-propelled and revolve through 360°. The cost of these large-capacity modern machines is great, and in order to assure the return of the investment during the life of the property the reserve of coal in the area to be mined must be large;" Many comparatively small areas of coal suitable for strip mining exist, but these areas probably could not be mined, profitably with this large equip- ment. Therefore, heavy equipment has not been used in small areas because of the high cost in place of this equipment, the time and Atpense required to transport the machines to the mine site, and the construction of power lines if the machines are electrical powered.. Scrapers and light excavating equipment ane mobile, and the investment cost is not high. These units have been used in sirring the coal in small areas. A study to determine the methods in, yogue, and economic considerations involved in the use of such equipment was undertaken, and the information obtained is discussed in this report.

A study of the diffusion of nickel into both fibrous and recrystallized 0.065-in.-diam silica-alumina doped tungsten wire at 1200°C has been conducted. The diffusion profiles were determined by chemical dissolulion of successive circumferential layers and spectro-photometric determination of nickel in the etchant. It was shown that the diffusion of nickel into tungsten is markedly structure-sensitive. No significant amount of nickel could be introduced at 1200°C into tungsten which had first been recrystallized at temperatures of 2300°C, leading to an upper limit estimate for the bulk diffusivity of nickel in tungsten of 10-11 sq cm per sec at 1200°C. However, nickel did diffuse into initially fibrous wires, caused re crystallization, and was alsays present at the advancing recrystallization front. The accumulation of nickel in an initially fibrous region ceases when the recrystallization front arrives. The characteristics of the resulting diffusion profiles are explained in terms of the relation between diffusion processes and micro structural changes. WHILE it is well-known that the presence of nickel and certain other metals causes low-temperature recrystallization of the cold-worked fibrous structure of doped tungsten,''' the character of the phenomenon is not well understood. Recently it was shown that the recrystallization reaction can be induced at low temperatures by the presence of solid nickel on the surface of doped wire, but not by exposure to nickel vapors.3 Once recrystallization was initiated, a continued source of nickel was required for propagation of the recrystallization front. The phenomenon appeared to be a complicated solid-state reaction since, in addition to the change in structure of the tungsten from fibrous to equiaxed grains, diffusion of nickel from the surface into the recrystallized and fibrous structures was occurring with possible chemical reaction between nickel and tungsten at the surface and interaction of nickel with the dopants which ordinarily stabilize the fibrous structure within the wire. The objective of the present work was to study the diffusion of nickel into fibrous and recrystallized tungsten structures in order to clarify the relationship of the diffusion process to nickel-induced recrystallization. Studies of interdiffusion in the Ni-W system4"7 have been principally concerned with the mobility of tungsten in nickel. Information on diffusion of nickel in tungsten is meager, and there seem to be no studies of the mobility of nickel in tungsten which elucidate the structural aspects of the phenomenon. The present experiments were designed to determine the diffusivity of nickel at 1200°C in fibrous tungsten, in large-grained tungsten prerecrystallized at high tem- perature, and in tungsten recrystallized at 1200°C due to the presence of nickel. Although the concentration profiles were determined in these experiments, unexpected changes in boundary conditions or complex diffusion paths complicated the analysis of these profiles so that the interpretation could not be readily expressed in terms of simple diffusivities. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The experiments were conducted on Sylvania 0.065-in.-diam silica-alumina doped commercial tungsten wire, hereafter designated as ordinary doped wire. A special lot of 0.065-in.-diam silica-alumina doped low-nickel wire was also used. Impurity analyses of the wire are given in Table I. The experimental design is shown in Fig. 1. All heat treatments were conducted in vacuum. Two groups of ordinary doped wire were prepared for diffusion with nickel. One group in the as-received (fibrous) condition was elec-tropolished, nickel-plated, and annealed at 1200°C for 20 and 40 hr, or was exposed to nickel vapor at 1200°C for 20 and 40 hr. The second group was recrystallized to an equiaxed grain structure at 2300°C for 3 hr, electropolished, nickel-plated, or exposed to nickel vapor for anneals at 1200°C for 20 and 40 hr.

Materials handled at metal and non-metal mines in the United States increased 10 percent compared with those of 1965 as a result of expansions in output at existing mines and development of others to meet increasing demands for mineral products. The tonnage of commercial materials mined or quarried increased as did the quantity of waste handled. Crude material from which metal or nonmetal products were derived comprised 71 percent (75 percent in 1964) of the total materials handled. Great strides were made in mining technology and there were indications that, in the future, earth moving by the mining industry will involve materials-handling systems of increasing size and complexity. Materials Handled.-Output of ore and waste at metal and nonmetal mines and quarries in the United States in 1966 totaled 3,518 million tons (3.213 million tons in 1965). The quantity of materials handled has increased at an average annual rate of 5 percent since 1962. Ore production increased 4 percent over that of 1965, also comparable to the average annual rate of increase in the last 5 years. Waste removal in 1966 increased 25 percent over that of the previous year.

PT. Indo Muro Kencana (PT.IMK) is gold and silver mine located in Central Kalimantan province, Indonesia. Mining activities in PT.IMK is conducted in Bantian pit area by applying surface mining method and using combination of excavator and hauler (articulated dump truck and rigid haul truck) as the transportation for ore to the crushing plant and waste material to the waste dump. Current blasting practice is ore-waste blasting. Ore-waste blasting is the term where the ore and waste rock are blasted in the same blasting process. Blasting is conducted by using nonel initiation system. By multiple pits operation, monthly powder factor is varied from 0.23 kg/t to 0.27 kg/t. Emulsion blend with density 1.15 g/cc is used as bulk explosive. At this stage, the concept of geoblast is proposed as an engineering tool for Drill and Blast engineering practice in PT.IMK. In addition, there is a need to maintain rock fragmentation by blasting, to maintain monthly powder factor, and to maintain excavator’s productivity. Next, the concept of scaled depth of burial (Chiappetta and Treleven, 1997) and the concept of blastability index (Lilly, 1986) are proposed as geoblast’s tools to improve blasting practice in PT.IMK. It is expected that rock fragmentation by blasting, explosive consumption and excavator’s productivity will be maintained by integration of geoblast and drill and blast engineering. Furthermore, the objective of this paper is to integrate geoblast and drill and blast engineering in order to create an engineering guideline in PT.IMK. Additionally, blasting trials with air decking application is proposed in order to support the geoblast’s improvement. It is planned that these blasting trials will be conducted in 2022. In conclusion, it can be seen that integration of geoblast and D&B engineering in PT.IMK is relevant to improve current drill and blast current practice and applicable to maintain rock fragmentation by blasting.

The power sector in India has an installed capacity of 267.637 GW as on March 2015. Out of this total installed capacity, the hydropower sector contributes 41,267.43 MW as renewable energy source. The development of various proposed hydropower schemes in India are primarily concentrated in mountainous regions of Himalaya and often involves underground tunnelling. Underground tunnelling of considerable magnitude is generally associated with adverse geological conditions and associated geological surprises. The main objective in case of Tunnels constructed especially for hydro projects, which carry enormous quantum of water is that, it should not leak. Moreover, the tunnels which are part of water conductor system should resist the inflow of water from the surrounding ground in order to avoid draining of natural water sources and lowering of existing groundwater levels. Lowering of water table may result in subsidence and damage to existing surface structures, loss of capacity of drinking water schemes and in some cases even catastrophic sliding of landmass. Grouting and pre-grouting in tunnels serve three different purposes i.e., Stabilization, Strengthening and sealing of the rock mass around tunnels to avoid leakage of water from tunnels. In present paper, results of grouting methodology adopted during final construction stage of RHEP (412 MW) along with the introspection of Water Pressure Tests conducted for determination of the efficacy of grouting were elaborately presented. The process, of contact and consolidation grouting which is respectively followed by water pressure tests along entire reach of HRT (15.177 Km long) were also addressed in detail. Pertaining to the results of water percolation tests (before and after consolidation grouting), it was also attempted to categorize the behaviour of different rock mass classes/ conditions in reference to different quantum of grout intake and corresponding Lugeon values. Importance of planned and dedicated successful grouting procedure adopted in hydropower project at RHEP is also emphasized.

A simple model has been developed which describes the steady-state solute distribution in Ti-H type systems above the eutectoid temperature in the presence of a temperature gradient. The solute distribution is dependent on the shape of the phase boundaries. An interesting result, and one that is not observed at steady state in thermal diffusion below the eutectoid temperature, is the existence of a two-phase region. The heat of transport for hydrogen in a titanium, Q*a, over the temperature range 275" to 650.C is determined to be 4500 * 230 cal per mole. The heat of transport for hydrogen in B titanium, QB* over the temperature range 320" to 590.C is found to be 630 ± 200 cal per mole. It is also shown that thermal diffusion provides a method by which phase bounduries above the eutectoid may be determined in Ti-H type systems. IN modern technology materials are being used at constantly increasing temperatures under greater temperature gradients. Thus atomic migration in metal alloys due to a temperature gradient (thermal diffusion) may in some cases occur to an observable extent. The thermal diffusion of hydrogen in zirconium has in recent years received considerable attention1-' because of the use of zirconium alloys in nuclear power reactors. The thermal diffusion kinetics below the eutectoid (547°C) are fairly well understood. At steady state the solid solution, a, and hydride, 6, phases are completely separated with the hydride precipitating at the lower temperatures. No experimental work has been carried out in the a + B region although Droege4 suggested that a complete separation of the two phases, as observed at temperatures below the eutectoid, might not always occur. In the present investigation a simple model has been used to determine the steady-state solute distribution under a temperature gradient in Zr-H type systems heated above the eutectoid temperature. The solute distribution is shown to be dependent on the shape of the phase boundaries in the constitutional diagrams and several typical cases are discussed. The model has been applied to Ti-H. This system was chosen in preference to Zr-H because of its much lower eutectoid temperature (-300°C as compared with 547.C), thereby reducing experimental errors due to oxidation and hydriding. The heats of transport for hydrogen in the a and B phases of titanium also have been determined since they were required to compare the proposed thermal diffusion model with experiment. THEORY In the presence of a temperature gradient the atomic flux in a single-phase region of a two-com-ponent system of which the atoms of only one component are diffusing is given by:' J = - U\dx + RT3 dx) which can be written as: j-D(dn/dt +Q*n/RT2)dt/dx [11 J - -D\dT + RT2)dx [1] where D = diffusion coefficient, n = solute concentration, T = absolute temperature, R = gas constant, dT/dx = temperature gradient, and Q* = heat of transport. At steady state (J = 0) Eq. [I] leads to the solute distribution: n = noexp Q*/RT where no = a constant depending on total solute content. The heat of transport Q* can be experimentally determined from the steady-state distribution. In the present paper we shall determine the solute distribution in systems having the constitutional diagram exemplified by Ti-H shown in Fig. l.' As shown, N,(T) and NB(T) are the equilibrium solute concentrations in the a and 0 phases at temperature T. Lines AA' and CC' define the region of interest to us. The following assumptions are made: 1) Steady-state conditions prevail. 2) In a single-phase region all points on an isotherm have the same thermodynamic potential so that the composition over an isotherm is uniform. If a two-phase region exists, thermodynamic equilibrium is found only at phase interfaces. "Railroad locomotives produce heat, gas, and smoke, which cause considerable discomfort to engine men and firemen while passing through tunnels. In order to try and improve these conditions, the Bureau of Mines has investigated the composition of atmospheres in cabs of freight locomotives while in tunnels; and some of the higher temperatures in the cabs were noted; physiological effects upon men were determined and gas masks and respirators were devised to eliminate the effects of irritating and poisonous gases and smoke. Those investigations were conducted in tunnels of the Baltimore & Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Union Pacific railroads; while that described in this paper was carried out in tunnels of the Chesapeake & Ohio, Railroad, situated in the Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountains in Virginia and West Virginia, Freight locomotives used by this railroad are of the Mallet type, which have two separate cylinders: and two separate sets of driving wheels on each side. In locomotive language they are of the 2-6-6-2 type. All of the cylinders act as simple engines when starting or in slow, heavy hauling; but at faster speeds the pair of cylinders on each side operate compound, Mallet locomotives are the largest and most powerful now operated.The tendency in train operation has always been to increase the burden upon locomotives, Present traffic needs frequently load even the Mallet engine to capacity, and yet the weight of trains tends to increase. It has been suggested as a means of securing greater power units that Mallets be constructed to operate only as simple engines. This would increase the amount of steam given off as the amount of coal burned and the resulting volume of flue gas emitted."

With decreasing ore grades, the tailings of mining operations are becoming of increasing interest as metal-containing secondary raw materials. The objective of the current work was to investigate chloride leaching of gold, copper, cobalt, nickel, and zinc present in the flotation tailings. In the current study, the effect of cupric ion as an oxidant (0–50 g/L) and NaCl (150–250 g/L) on metals extraction was investigated. The other parameters, such as pH (1.8), temperature (95 °C), solid/liquid ratio (25%), oxygen feed rate (1200 mL/min), leaching time (24 h), and stirring rate (950 rpm), were kept constant. Gold dissolution rate was shown to increase with increase in cupric ion concentrations up to 50 g/L. Also, increase in NaCl concentration up to 250 g/L increased gold extraction. Majority of the copper present in the flotation tailings could be dissolved with all the all solutions investigated. The other base metals, cobalt, nickel, and zinc extractions were also shown to increase with increase in the cupric ion and sodium chloride concentration. However, even in the absence of cupric ion addition (t = 72 h, 250 g/L NaCl), the final extraction of Cu, Ni, Zn, Co, and Fe increased up to 98, 93, 83, 76, and 80%, respectively. This shows the power of inherently originating oxidants present in the tailings. Furthermore, the solid analysis of the leach residue indicated that leaching the flotation tailings in pure NaCl may result in partial gold dissolution. The results demonstrate that significant amount of metals present in the tailings could be extracted even with only NaCl as added chemical in the presence of oxygen feed, oxidizing agents originating directly from the raw material. This can provide an advantageous cyanide-free method for extraction of metals from very low-grade tailings with low chemical consumption.

G. A. Moore—The tin-fusion method has been a very favorable possibility for many years. The authors apparently have settled the question that delayed the method for a long time by showing that no hydrogen is absorbed in the tin. This, of course, is very important. I want to make a few remarks concerning the absolute accuracy of analysis, which must be the final basis for deciding among the various methods. From the figures in the paper, there seems to be some remaining slight discrepancy on the actual amount of hydrogen present in various samples which may be presumed essentially identical. (This is of the order of the precision of individual analyses but appears in averaged results.) From the analyst's viewpoint, the tally of hydrogen content can be regarded as occurring in three portions. First is a large portion which comes off easily and automatically during sample storage and later on heating in the apparatus. This is fairly easily analyzed. Second is an item which may be either positive or negative in the tally sheet. In warm or hot evolution, this is a portion which, in practice, can never be re-

The Yinachang deposit in south-west China contains large amounts of Fe, Cu and rare earth elements (REEs). Apatite in this deposit records complex REE mineralisation and remobilisation processes.Fe-Cu-(REE) mineralisation at Yinachang occurred at ~1700 Ma, and three stages of alteration and mineralisation are identified: Na-(Fe) alteration, Fe-(REE) mineralisation and Cu-(REE) mineralisation. In the Fe-(REE) mineralisation stage, REE-rich apatite formed together with magnetite. In the Cu-(REE) mineralisation stage, fluids undersaturated with REEs interacted with early-formed REE-rich apatite, during which large proportions of REEs, especially light REEs (LREEs), were leached from apatite.At ~840 Ma, apatite experienced a second interaction with fluid. In that process, REEs were removed from the apatite structure but immediately reprecipitated into new phases within the apatite. Thus, numerous REE mineral inclusions including bastnaesite, monazite and minor Y-phosphate occur in the apatite. There are also a very small portion of LREEs that were transported out of the apatite, resulting in the growth of bastnaesite and monazite grains outside the apatite.This study demonstrates that REEs can be mobilised in multistage hydrothermal activities and highlights the significance of fluid compositions for REE transportation and deposition behaviours in hydrothermal systems.CITATION:Li, X and Zhou, M-F, 2015. The new combination gypsum plaster and gypsum wallboard plant of Compania Industrial Kaiser S.A., the first of its kind in Mexico went into production in April of 1969. This was approximately fourteen months from the signing of the formal order for the plant and equipment. Compania Industrial Kaiser S.A. is an affiliate of the Kaiser Gypsum Company in the United States and will market practically the same line of products and to the same standards as those produced in American plants. Located in the City of Puebla, the plant will readily service the major Mexican sales areas. It is approximately 85 miles away from Mexico City on a modern, four-lane, divided highway and distribution to other major consumer areas can be readily effected by the use of a good highway system, as well as, by rail. This, plant is the, sixteenth Gypsum Wallboard Mill supplied abroad by my company, United States Wallboard Machinery Company. Other installations are in Australia, New Zealand, Chile, England, Scotland, Ireland, Finland, South Africa, Latvia and Germany. Two new mills are on order; a small unit for Brazil and a comparatively large unit for New Zealand. All these mills have one thing in common with plants in the United States and Canada; they are equipped with standard, time-proven and tested equipment and they are designed in accor¬dance with the latest engineering thinking in order to produce efficiently, the highest quality product at lowest cost. They differ generally in the size of plant, the factors that brought them into being and in the market that they supply. I believe that these differences will be of interest to you.

The amount of research done in the last fen years on the subject of diffusion in solid metals is significant of the importance of this problem. To review the literature dealing with diffusion is unnecessary here. Deschl in 1912 reviewed the work that had been done on diffusion in solids and gave a bibliography of the literature published before that time. Mehl's paper in 19362 is an excellent review of diffusion in metals and contains a large bibliography. Of importance also for it? review and bibliography is an article by 14. I. Krynitsky.~ While considerable material lias appeared in the literature on diffusion in brass, the amount of information is not great compared to that pertaining to some of the other alloys. Most of the information published is of a qualitative nature; that which is quantitative varies considerably. Thus the quantitative determination of the rates of diffusion of copper and zinc in alpha brass by a new method appeared worth while. In the present investigation the rate of diffusion of zinc in approximately the same composition alpha brass has been determined :it three temperatures. Procedure The method used consisted of plating copper on a beta brass, heating it, to allow diffusion to take place, and measuring the concentration of copper by determining the lattice constant of the alloy. This method is unique in that it uses a beta brass of such a composition that at the tem perature at which diffusion takes place the beta brass is saturated wit11 copper.
