It is perhaps somewhat unusual for a contributor to comment on the authors' reply to his critique. However, I should like to return to a specific comment made by the authors. An assessment of the geotechnical conditions at the Manhattan Cruise Terminals (Piers 88, 90, 92 & 94) was conducted after excessive settlement and structural distress was reported at Pier 92. The piers are located on the Hudson River along the west side of Manhattan, New York. The following paper focuses on the investigation and analysis performed on Pier 88 located at the western terminus of 48th Street. The pier is supported by approximately 2,500 timber piles bearing on soft organic silts and clays. The first portion of the analysis consisted of an offshore field investigation and laboratory testing to classify the subsurface soils within the project area and estimate the geotechnical capacities of the timber piles. Additionally, a settlement analysis including consolidation and negative skin friction analyses was performed to evaluate existing settlement levels. Axial and lateral analyses were performed to develop the soil springs (p-y, t-z, and q-z curves) necessary for the structural analysis.

ABSTRACT. A retrospective analysis of some geomechanical classifications for rock masses is presented. It is shown that estimates of rock mass strength according to geomechanical classifications developed, e.g., for construction of tunnels and for ore mines can differ very much. Development of specifically oriented classifications for rock masses with certain geomechanical properties is required. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG. Es wurde eine retrospektive Analyse einiger geomechanoschen Klassifikationen von Gesteinsmassiven durchgefuhrt. Es idt aufgezeigt worden, dass die Bes-timmung der Festigkeit des Massivs nach geomechanischen Klassifikationen, die z.B. fur den Bau von Tunnelen und fur Erzbergwerke entwickelt wurden, sich um etliche Male unterscheiden kann. Es ist eine Entwicklung von spezialisierten Klassifikationen fur Gesteinsmassive mit bestimmten geomechanischen Eigenschaften erforderlich. RESUME. Il a ete fait l’analyse retrospective de certaines classifications geomecaniques des massifs de roche. Il a ete montre que les estimations de solidite du massif suivant les classifications geomecaniques etudiees, par exemple, pour la construction des tunnels et pour les puits de minerai peuvent differer en quelques fois. Il est donc necessaire d’etudier les classifications specialisees pour les massifs aux proprietes geomecaniques particulieres.

Sorting tests on limestone at the Lohjan Kalkkitehdas Oy Ojamo mine, Finland, are described. The tests, conducted to evaluate a Sortex 811MW optical separator, were successful, and upon completion, the sorting machine was put into production. Optical separation characteristics of the limestone, used for cement manufacturing, are described. Problems of winter operation are discussed. Operating costs are given.

The settlement properties of tailings modified by flocculants were investigated at the Shizhuyuan Mine, with the aims to screen for the most effective flocculants and the optimum dosage rates for tailings sedimentation. The settlement rate was used as the indicator of effective tailings sedimentation. Calcareousness and three polyacrylamides (F1, F2 and F3) were selected for settlement property evaluation. The results proved that sole use of calcareousness or any of the polyacrylamides had no apparent effect on the tailings sedimentation, while a remarkable acceleration of sedimentation could be observed with a combined addition of calcareousness and polyacrylamides, among which the addition of polyacrylamide F2 together with calcareousness is the most effective. The optimum dosage rate of F2 and calcareousness is 50g/t and 3kg/t respectively. The density of tailings slurry has an effect on sedimentation at the early settlement stage, with lower density generating quicker initial settlement.

This paper summarizes the status of a series of new chemical reagents developed with the explicit goal of expanding the capabilities of existing froth flotation processes as well as allowing for new solid/solid separations to be undertaken that are not now feasible with flotation. The first portion of the paper briefly outlines the theory and motivation behind the development of each new reagent family. 'The second portion of the paper deals with specific laboratory examples of some separation systems studied to date.

The mining industry has recognized the importance of engineering controls as a primary means of preventing hearing loss. The noise control treatments most commonly observed on drills and bolters during this study were windshields, sound absorbing material, and hydraulic motor covers. These controls were evaluated on machines at underground metal mines to determine the amount of noise reduction achieved by each control. The results indicate that absorbing material has very little effect on the noise level. The noise reduction attributable to the motor covers was dependent on the material used to create the cover. Properly installed windshields were the most consistent control.

The Banda arc, a U-shaped orogenic belt which separates oceanic crust of the Banda Sea from continental crust underlying the Australian- New Guinea shelf, has been interpreted to mark the convergent boundary between the northward-moving Indian Ocean- Australian plate and the Southeast Asian plate (Hamilton, 1979; von der Borch, 1979; Bowin et al., 1980). East of the island of Sumba (Fig. 1), the oceanic crust of the Indian Ocean has been completely subducted and Australian crust is now thrust under the Banda arc. Controversy has centered over the interpretation of the Timor trough as the surface location of subduction and the significance of the Savu Sea between Timor and Flores as either a forearc basin or the continuation of the Java trench (Karig et al., 1987). Two concentric island ridges, called the inner and outer Banda arcs (Hamilton, 1979), separate Australian continental crust from the oceanic crust of the Banda Sea (von der Borch, 1979) (Fig. 1). The inner arc is a typical volcanic island arc composed of calc-alkalic volcanic rocks of Neogene age, while older (Permian and younger) complexly deformed sedimentary and metamorphic rocks make up the outer arc. Timor is the largest and most extensively studied island of the outer arc and is separated from the inner arc by the Savu Sea. The triangular-shaped Savu Sea appears to be a complex forearc basin divided by a series of buried basement ridges (Karig et al., 1987). British Coal has made a practical progressive approach to improving the reliability of its mining equipment. Reliability must be addressed at the specification stage but does not end there and routine procedures are used to procure equipment of adequate reliability. The techniques used to monitor and improve reliability during the operational phase of the equipment, providing engineers and operators with detailed printouts, together with the types of maintenance employed, ensure high levels of availability. Finally, the methods of repair and overhaul of British Coal equipment and systems ensure that the initial reliability targets outlined on the specification, can still be achieved.

A study was conducted to examine how pretreatment of carbon-bearing gold ores with chlorine enhances gold recovery by cyanidation. It is hypothesized that metal species (including iron and copper) dissolved during chlorination adsorb on the carbon surface hindering the adsorption of dissolved gold. To test the hypothesis, samples of several sulfide minerals were subjected to reaction with sparged chlorine gas to determine which, if any, dissolve faster than gold under these conditions. Then, a synthetic carbonaceous refractory gold ore containing pyrite, chalcocite, activated carbon, and gold was subjected to gas sparging. The results of these experiments showed that chalcocite and arsenopyrite dissolve so that metal (copper and iron) is put into solution slightly faster than gold under the same chlorination conditions. Also, it was observed from the experiments that gold adsorbs on activated carbon during chlorination, but is replaced by copper and iron as the chlorination process dissolves more of the chalcocite and pyrite. The study concluded by investigating ferric chloride addition prior to chlorination to hinder gold adsorption on activated carbon.

This project includes replacement of the historic vertical-lift span Meridian Bridge (U.S. Highway 81 over the Missouri River) that connects Yankton, South Dakota with rural Cedar County, Nebraska. The new 76-foot wide, 1,590-foot long steel plate girder structure required the use of drilled shaft foundations that extended into the underlying Carlile Shale formation. Designers indicated that an individual drilled shaft capacity of about 2,000 kips will be needed at each of the river piers, and based on the subsurface information, 8 to 10-foot diameter drilled shafts extending to about 115-foot would be required for support of the bridge structure. An Osterberg Load Test was performed on one test shaft to determine the ultimate skin friction and end bearing of the Carlile Shale. This paper describes the design and installation of the load test drilled shaft as well as presents the load test results as compared with predicted design values determined using FHWA methods.

An experimental method to determine the carbon activity in various solid solutions was developed. Samples of the solid solutions and an Fe-C reference sample were equilibrated with respect to carbon content by annealing them in a Hz-CHI gas mixture in a closed cell. The carbon content of each sample was determined, and the carbon activity was obtained from the carbon content of' the reference sample and well-established data for the dependence of the carbon activity on the carbon content in Fe-C alloys. The influence of vanadium on the activity of carbon in austenitic Fe-C-V alloys at 1000°C was determined by this technique. A general semiempirical correlation was developed to describe the dependence of the activity coefficient of- carbon on the composition of ternary austenitic iron-base alloys containing interstitial carbon and a substitutional solute. The correlation is particularly useful in predicting the partitioning of- carbon between various alloys. THE influence of substitutional solutes on the activity of interstitial solutes in metallic solid solutions is important in the theory of alloy phases. Solid solutions of particular interest are the fcc austenite phases of ternary Fe-C-Z systems, in which carbon is the interstitial solute and Z represents any substitutional solute. Carbon-activity data are also needed in these solid solutions to solve practical problems; the quantitative treatment of diffusion-controlled transformations' is an examvle. Experimental information is available for ternary austenitic solid solutions containing Mn,2 Si,2 and A16 as the substitutional solute. Because qualitative preliminary studies indicated that vanadium appreciably decreases the carbon activity,14 the present investigation was undertaken to determine the influence of vanadium on the activity of carbon in austenite. Although Flender and ever" measured carbon activity over a range of compositions in the Fe-C-V system, they were primarily interested in determining phase boundaries in the ternary system, so most of their measurements were outside the composition range for stability of single-phase austenite. Petrova and Shvartsman' also made limited measurements of the carbon activity in Fe-C-V alloys. The dependence of the carbon activity on the carbon content of an alloy may be determined by passing COCOz or H2-CH4 gas mixtures of carefully measured composition over the alloys, determining their equilibrium carbon content, and utilizing the relevant equilibrium relationships. smith16 used this technique with both CO-COZ and HZ-CH4 gas mixtures to determine the dependence of carbon activity on carbon content in pure Fe-C alloys. His data, which are in good agreement with those of some previous and subsequent investigators,6'17 but not with those of others,lfl'ao are usually considered to be the most reliable. Although the same method can be applied to Fe-C-Z alloys, it is difficult experimentally, because the appropriate gas mixtures are almost pure CO or Hz. A simpler technique is to simultaneously equilibrate the Fe-C-Z alloys and pure Fe-C alloys with the gas mixtures, and then use Smith's data to determine the carbon activity in the pure Fe-C alloy. A number of investigators have employed this technique. others Have used the partitioning of carbon at the interface of a diffusion couple prepared from an Fe-C alloy and a Fe-C-Z alloy. In the present study, a closed-cell method was developed by which carbon was selectively transferred via a gas medium between pure Fe-C alloys and Fe-C-V alloys which were not in physical contact. A similar method was developed independently by Heckler and winchel14 and used to study the Fe-C-Ni system. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD A schematic diagram of the experimental arrangement is shown in Fig. 1. In a typical experiment, a 5-g Fe-C sample was placed in one compartment of a quartz cell, and a 5-g Fe-V sample was placed in each of the other compartments.
