"The research goal was to assess if analytical tool/s can be developed to quantify displacements around a geological fault as longwall face moves toward it and past it. A company was faced with crossing a 2-3 m (6-10 ft.) normal up-thrown fault in the development entries and the face while mining a 375 m (1,200 ft.) wide longwall face. A field monitoring and numerical modeling study was performed to develop data. Field measurements consisted of roof-to-floor convergence and rectangular rosettes in the immediate roof. Numerical modeling consisted of constructing a 3-D structural model using the FLAC3D software with the fault plane incorporated as ubiquitous joint. Based on analyses and field observations data, the coal company was informed of impending movements along the fault plane and likely impacts on the development entries. Additional stiff supports were installed in head gate entries around the stage loader and equipment about 60 m (200 ft.) outby of the longwall face (solid). As the longwall face approached the fault, predicted displacements were documented and manifested by severe loading on the installed supports.BACKGROUND AND STUDY OVERVIEWThis paper summarizes results of a cooperative study aimed at improving longwall mining operations in Illinois. More specifically, the study focused on: 1) In-mine measurements in development entries while mining ahead of and behind a faulted zone, 2) Making observations on stability of pillars and entries while mining through the fault, and 3) Developing simplified analytical structural models using FLAC3D to assess if predictive techniques can be developed to plan mining operations through fault zone. Available data on geometry of the fault with estimates of the cohesion and frictional parameters were used for modeling."

In this study, the influences of rock mass properties on the blasting performance in open cast mines are investigated. To this end, discontinuity spacings and discontinuity orientations are measured and full scale blasts with various designs are observed in open cast mines of Aegean Lignite (ELI) and Bursa Lignite (BLI) Establishments belonging to Turkish Coal Enterprises (TKI). For each blast, blasting cost is calculated, and particle size distribution representing the fragmentation of muckpile is determined by means of Split-Desktop software using image processing. 50%(K50), 80%(K80) passing sizes and topsize values are used in the determination of blasting performance according to rock mass properties. The relationships between orientation angle, which is the acute angle between the strikes of slope face and major discontinuity, and 50%(K50) and 80%(K80) passing sizes and topsize values and also blasting cost are investigated in order to analyse the influences of major discontinuity orientation on fragmentation and blasting cost. Furthermore, the relationships between discontinuity modal spacing (or block size index) and 50%(K50) and 80%(K80) passing sizes and topsize values and also blasting cost are investigated in order to analyse the influences of discontinuity spacing on fragmentation and blasting cost. In this paper, the trends observed in these relationships are discussed and the importance of it in mining is commented. Plus, pour determiner des influences du trou du discontinuite sur l’abattage et la fragmentation; Il a été observé la relation entre l’index de la dimension du block et K50, K80 et les plus grand valeurs des dimensions et aussi les expences de l’abattage. Pour conclure; on peut dire que dans cette presentation, apres la discusssion des sujets consideres ces relations, Il a été souligné l’importances de ces relations dans la domain de la Minéralogie. Zu diesem Zweck wurden Diskontinuität Abstände und Diskontinuität Orientierungen gemessen und Sprengungen im Originalmaßstab mit verschiedenen Anordnungen in Tagebau Bergwerken der Ägäischen Braunkohle (ELI) und Bursa Braunkohle (BLI) Betrieben, die zu der Türkischen Kohlegesellschaft (TKI) zugehörig sind, beobachtet. As virgin coal reserves dwindle, more and more mines are being opened in areas with previous mining. As addressed in this conference before, there are solutions available for designing mines extracting coal from reserves with known underground workings above or below the target seam. Often times, however, mining begins with limited knowledge of the underground workings. Even with careful planning, the proposed design has limited success because the ?facts? as presented during planning turn out not to be as accurate as one would like. At National Coal?s Mine #14, mining the Walnut Mountain seam, after driving the main entries in some 34 crosscuts, it was found during routine mine examinations that the pillars had separated from the roof in a few areas of the mains. Immediate roof conditions proved to be sound but questions arose concerning the stability of the main roof and floor. Core tests were done to better determine the rock strengths and characteristics. The paper presents the ideology used to tackle the effects of mining over old works in an operating coal mine. This paper discusses the analysis of the symptoms observed and the steps taken to ensure that this pillar separation was caused by the underlying old workings and that the separation was expected and controllable.

Discussion by F.W. DeVries Comments on natural cyanide attenuation. The paper by Botz and Mudder in the November 2000 issue of Minerals and Metallurgical Processing had one disappointing aspect. Table 1 (p. 229) failed to include a significant species - neutral copper cyanide (CuCN). This compound has been most trouble-some in many plant-scale cyanide cleanup processes, includ- ing acidification-volatilization- reneutralization (AVR), hy- drogen peroxide cleanup and air/SO2 cleanup. It has also plagued many pilot efforts to use ion-exchange (IX) resin technology. This author elucidated the concept that, under some conditions, copper cyanide failed to precipitate out of treated effluents and appeared to exist as a filterable colloid that reported as copper and cyanide, with the latter measured as WAD (weak-acid-dissociable) cyanide in that analytical method. The concentrations measured were very near the levels of 0.2 ppm, often the regulatory limit for WAD cyanide. The copper concentration, using the 1 : 1 ratio for this com- pound, would then be more than 0.4 ppm, which could also be unacceptable. We discovered that it was unsafe to assume that the Cu(CN),- would surrender both cyanide ions simultaneously and allow cupric copper to be removed subsequently as, say, cupric ferrocyanide (Hatchett's Brown). This compound could be ignored as safely as the "iron blues," as essentially an inert solid, stable in geologic time if not exposed to sunlight. Under poorly controlled oxidation of the cyanocuprite ions (copper with four, three or two cyanides complexed to the copper), CuCN could well be formed and could not be assumed to precipitate out as a solid. The authors of the paper, by failing to include the CuCN species in their model, may have left users of the model prone to ignore the possible occurrence of the colloidal(?) form in the discharge, thus finding an effluent that failed to meet regulatory limits. (See addendum below.) This somewhat ephemeral material may well have been responsible for some large-scale failures of cyanide destruction technology to succeed at sites in North America and elsewhere. Two specific references alluding to this occurrence may be found: Griffiths et al., 1987, "The detoxification of gold-mill tailings with hydrogen peroxide," Journal of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, September, p. 282. DeVries, 1989, "Improved understanding in detoxification of cyanide leach liquors using peroxide" Rand01 Gold Conference, Sacramento CA, p. 15 1. It is advisable for workers in this area of cyanide removal or recycle to avoid assuming that CuCN will, with certainty, precipitate out of solution, or that the dicyanocuprite ion will part simultaneously with both cyanide ions and allow cupric copper to be dealt with by other reactions. One further piece of work may be incomplete. That is, a definitive study of the long-term behavior of CuCN that does precipitate when exposed to other compounds present in neutralized tailings. Addendum. The extremely complex reaction of cupric ion on cyanide- which, of course, results in oxidation of cyanide to cyanate, probably through the intermediate stage of forming cyanogen [(CN)2] from oxidation of HCN with its hydrolysis to cyanate and cyanide ion - involves two cyanide moieties and the reduction of the cupric ion back again to the cuprous state. This, then, can form the CuCN potential "solid" that was already the undesirable species. In cyanide cleanup, with either air/SO2 or hydrogen peroxide, copper is generally employed as the catalyst, so it is unclear what happens when the CU(CN)2-1 is ultimately exhausted. The subjects of this study are two corrosion phenomena familiar to operators of aluminum plants employing Soderberg anodes of the vertical type, namely the sul-fide scale formation observed at the steel contact spikes and the corrosion wear observed at the lower edge of the gas collecting skirts. The causes of these corrosion phenomena are discussed on the basis of observations from practice and measurements on commercial cells as well as on laboratory experiments. It is concluded that the anode spike corrosion is mainly due to the attack by sulfur compounds contained in the anodically evolved gases and that this attack is greatly promoted by cracks and pores in the anode carbon embedding the lower spike ends. The corrosion of the gas collecting skirt is mainly attributed to anodic dissolution of the iron during occasional contacts with the melt. ANODE SPIKE CORROSION The visible result of this corrosion is the formation of a brittle loosely adherent scale on the lower ends of the mild steel spikes maintaining the electric contact to the carbon anode, Fig. 1. The thickness of the scale usually varies from 0.5 to 3 mm, but in some cases scale of about 10 mm thickness has been observed by the writers. During the spike pulling, usually repeated every 3 weeks, part of the scale often loosens and remains in the anode carbon, resulting in contamination of the aluminum with iron. This corrosion has been attributed to reaction of the iron with gaseous sulfur compounds originating from the anode paste materials.'-4 This paste usually consists of 70 pct precalcined petroleum coke with 1.2 to 1.4 pct S and 30 pct coal tar pitch containing 0.5 to 0.7 pct S. During operation the gasification of the anode materials takes place in two ways: First, gases are evolved by the gradual baking of the anode paste added on top of the anode. Due to the sealing effected by the upper semifluid zone of the paste, these gases, containing sulfur compounds from the pitch, are forced downward through pores and cracks in the rigid anode carbon. At the temperatures of the zone of the lower ends of the spikes, 700" to 900°C, the original components of the baking gas must undergo decomposition, similar to that taking place with the production of coal gas, resulting in a gas mixture consisting mainly of H2 and CH4 with small percentages of H2S as the main sulfur compound.5 Second, the anodic reaction results in a mixture of C02 and CO, the total quantity of which is about 15 times that of the baking gas. These anode gases must carry the entire sulfur content of the carbon gasified by the anodic reaction. Henry and Holliday6 have shown that COS is the main sulfurous component of the anode gases from Soderberg cells. Soderberg anodes usually exhibit a network of vertical cracks, frequently traversing from one spike to the next one and to the outside of the block and widening downward to the working face of the anode. In addition the anode carbon, particularly that below the spike ends, is rather porous, as indicated in Fig. 1. It therefore seems probable that the anode gases also may partly penetrate to the spike ends. As the anode is partly immersed in the melt, the static pressure of this must forward this penetration. I) SPIKE SCALE COMPOSITION A great number of freshly extracted spikes from industrial plants were inspected and samples of the scale collected for examination. Before analyzing the samples a thin iron oxide layer, formed by air oxidation of the outside of the red hot scale immediately after spike pulling, was removed. On the average the Fe/S ratio found by these analyses corresponded to I the composition FeSl. oo7. X-ray powder patterns showed no oxide and otherwise agreed with those found by Haraldsen7 for iron sulfide with 50.00 at. Pct

"This paper challenges the traditional notion that mine planners need to plan production so as to incur the lowest mining cost. For a given mine configuration, a mine that increases its mining rate will incur increased mining costs. In an environment in which operations are fixated on cost reduction, a proposal that increases costs will not be readily accepted. Such a proposal requires financial justification—the increase in costs might be recuperated by the additional production. This paper evaluates the net present value (NPV) across a range of copper prices for two underground orebodies located at different depths, using a production rate of 300 kt per quarter and a scenario that introduces additional equipment and costs for 450 kt per quarter. The evaluation was based on the changes of NPV for the orebody located at a shallow depth compared with the orebody at a greater depth. Discrete event simulation combined with mixed integer programming was used for analysis. Unlike traditional sensitivity analysis, this study re-optimizes the mine plan for each commodity price at each production rate. The results show that, for the low mining rate at the final copper price, an NPV of A$1530.64 million is achieved, whereas an NPV of A$1537.59 million is achieved at a higher mining rate. Even though pushing mining rates beyond traditional limits may increase mining costs, this option may be beneficial at certain commodity prices, particularly when prices are elevated. IntroductionA traditional notion among mine planners is that mining rates should be planned in such a way as to reduce production costs. This concept generally relates to the mining rate that results in the highest machine utilization for the selected equipment. Although an existing mine may consider increasing its mining rate by adding equipment to a given mine configuration, this typically increases mining costs. In an environment in which operations are fixated on cost reduction, a proposal to increase costs may be very difficult to argue for. The value of the mine plan is well recognized as varying with the mining rate for a given orebody (Smith, 1997)"

(Min. Eng.) (Member) INTRODUCTION Messrs J. W. Wilson and P. C. Graham are to be congratulated on an excellent paper containing several thought-provoking remarks. The concept of allocating a machine and equipment valued initially at some R300 000 on an experimental basis is courageous, and the results obtained could be of interest to the mining industry as a whole. The Gold Fields of S.A. Group approached this problem differently. In pioneering the start of this work in South African gold mines, they considered that expenditure of this magnitude would be warranted only if the proposition was viable right from the start. To this end, a Robbins R41 was purchased expressly to assist in the duplication of part of the No. 1 shaft system of the Doomfontein Gold Mine. Mr M. J. Koortsl has summed up the initial results of this work and given some preliminary costing, but inflation since that period has made these figures somewhat out of date.

Eruption of rhyolitic ash-flow tuffs in the area of the McDermitt (Cordero) caldera began about 17.4 million yr (m.y.) ago and continued for about 1.5 m.y. During this period of silicic eruptions, a circular area about 30 km in diameter collapsed to form a caldera that subsequently filled with sedimentary and volcanic rocks. A total of more than 200 km30f silicic rocks was erupted from the volcano. The final phase of igneous activity, about 15.0 m.y. ago, included resurgent doming and intrusion in the south-central part of the caldera. Three to 4 m.y. later (-1 2 m.y. ago), hydrothermal solutions using the northern part of the caldera ring fractures as conduits deposited silica, cinnabar, pyrite, alunite, and other minerals in tuffaceous lake beds and volcanic rocks accumulated within the caldera. The ore-forming solutions may have been a residuum from the silicic magma, or connate water, or ground water heated by the still-hot resurgent magma in the central part of the caldera. The source of the mercury and other elements has not been identified.

This project took a watershed approach in the evaluation of water-quality impacts from past mining activities and current restoration projects in the Bear Butte Creek basin, a small and well-defined drainage in a heavily mined area of the northern Black Hills. The basin contains numerous inactive and abandoned mines, as well as a heap-leach surface gold mine. Bear Butte Creek normally loses all of its discharge to sinkholes in the Madison Limestone aquifer. Thus, it can affect the water quality of this regionally important water resource. Water-quality data were analyzed, stream surveys were conducted and two abandoned-mine restoration projects were monitored to evaluate the effectiveness of the watershed approach and to identify practical remediation techniques that could be applied to other watersheds. A geographic information system (GIS) was developed to organize information on stream quality, abandoned mine locations, and other geologic and hydrologic data. The watershed approach toward assessing and reclaiming abandoned mines appears to be effective when compared to a point-source approach that might improve water quality at specific sites but not result in significant overall improvement to the watershed because of adjacent sources.

Cyclic voltammetry and surface potential (photovoltage) measurements have been carried out on galena electrodes in sodium tetraborate solutions with added HC1 and NaOH to adjust the pH over the range 2 to 13. The first technique shows that the surface species formed on moderate anodic polarization and reduced on subsequent cathodic polarization are the same over the entire pH range. At anodic potentials, a soluble metal species and excess sulfur are formed; at cathodic potentials, sulfur is reduced to a soluble species. More importantly, excess surface sulfur is formed spontaneously under zero current conditions in alkaline solutions. This has been shown to occur on both polished surfaces and on virgin surfaces produced by in situ cleavage under the electrolyte. The photovoltage gives some insight into the charge and potential distribution at the galena surface. This is found to depend on past electrochemical history and the n- or p-type semiconducting character of the electrode and is interpreted in terms of changes in the surface stoichiometry that occur during reduction or oxidation. The effect of surface stoichiometry on subsequent xanthate interactions is discussed.

High resolution seismic profiling has proved a cost effective tool for defining the structure and seam geometry of Late Cretaceous-Late Miocene age lignite deposits in the South Island of New Zealand since 1981.In 1985 a total of 45 km of Mini Sosie seismic reflection was carried out in the Benhar, Hawkdun and Ashers-Waituna deposits as part of a major multidisciplinary resource investigation funded by the Liquid Fuels Trust Board. For each deposit the seismic programme involved integrating four or more intersecting Mini Sosie traverses with a grid of 1000 m spaced geophysically logged drillholes. The objective was to detect faults, with displacements ranging 30 - 100 m, which might impede mining using bucket wheel excavator systems at depths down to 300 m below surface.In general the quality of processed seismic data was high and with the assistance of ynthetic seismograms and other geological information, it was possible to identify a number of significant previously unknown faults. The success of this seismic programme ha shown that high resolution seismic profiling, used in conjunction with relatively low density drilling, can produce valuable structural and tratigraphic information at an early stage of open pit mining investigation.

The velocity and attenuation of elastic waves in sandstones were measured as a function of both pressure and fluid saturation. A large change occurs in these quantities if water is added and the rock is not compressed, but the change is small if the rock is subjected to a large overburden pressure. Measurements were made by vibrating cylindrical samples in both the extensional and torsional modes at frequencies up to 30,000 cycles/sec. Formulas were derived which enable the attenuation of dilatational waves in dry rocks to be deduced from the data. Similar experimental methods were used to investigate the properties of unconsolidated sands. Velocities were found to vary with the 1/4 power of the overburden pressure and attenuations to decrease with the 1/6 power. The effects of grain size, amplitude and fluid saturation were studied. Formulas by which the effects produced by a jacket around the sample may be calculated were derived. The practical application of these results to formation valuation is discussed. INTRODUCTION The attenuation of elastic waves in the earth has been of interest to the seismologist and geophysicist for many years, but only recently to the petroleum engineer. Engineering interest has been brought about by the success of velocity logging devices, for it is possible by modification of these instruments to measure the attenuation of sound waves in addition to their velocity and, hence, deduce the mobility of formation fluids as well as the porosities of the rocks which contain them. The main problem is to decide whether field measurements can be made with sufficient accuracy to be of practical use. This problem can only be solved after we know the magnitude of the attenuations which are typical of the earth at various depths. The logarithmic decrement of a fluid-saturated rock is the sum of a "sloshing" decrement and a "jostling" decrement, the former caused by the mobility of the fluid contained within the rock and the latter by the granular framework of the rock. Sloshing decrements can be calculated' using Biot's theory, but the jostling losses are less well understood. The present paper reports an experimental investigation of jostling losses in consolidated and uncon- solidated sands, particularly with respect to the effect of overburden pressure and fluid saturation. Born' showed that the decrement of a sandstone may increase dramatically when only a few per cent by weight of distilled water is added, and that the additional loss is proportional to the frequency of vibration. His measurements were made with no compressive stress on the framework of the rock. M. Gondouin3 investigated similar phenomena for fluid-saturated plasters but also did not compress the samples. In the present paper it is shown that compression of the framework reduces this effect, so that at depth the jostling decrement of a sandstone may be expected to be almost independent of fluid saturation and frequency. Decrements for many sedimentary rocks have been given by Volarovich,4 but all for the state of zero overburden pressure. Anomalously low velocities have been logged in shallow unconsolidated gas sands. Results of the present investigation confirm that these velocities are not caused by correspondingly high attenuations, because the jostling decrement in a packing of sand grains is small and much less than in a consolidated sandstone at the same depth. Velocities in sands have been measured by Tsareva5 and by Hardin6 as a function of pressure, but the corresponding decrements do not appear to have been measured previously. The widely used "resonant bar method" of measuring velocities and decrements was employed. Comments on variations of this technique have recently been published by McSkimmin.7 The main novelty of the present technique was the application of pressure to the samples. It was found possible to do this by placing the apparatus inside a pressure vessel, provided the conditions leading to large additional losses were avoided. These conditions are discussed below. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE Cylindrical samples were caused to vibrate in both the extensional and torsional mode of vibration and the amplitude of vibration was measured as a function of frequency in the neighborhood of a resonant frequency. The resonant frequency, fr, is related to the corresponding elastic modulus by the formulas where E and N are Young's modulus and the modulus of rigidity, p is the density of the sample, and A the wavelength of the vibration.

Dilute alloys of silver and of thallium in tin have been solidijzed unidirectionally under controlled conditions, to study the segregation associated with a cellular interface under conditions where both thermal and solute convection are present. Autoradiography and radioactive tracer counting techniques were combined with electron-probe microanalysis to study both macro- and microsegregation. It was found that, for concentrations giving only small amounts of constitutional supercooling, cell formation had little effect on the macroscopic distribution of solute along the specimen. At higher concentrations the effective distribution coefficient was higher than that expected for a smooth interface. Node spacing was independent of initial solute content at lower concentrations, becoming greater as keff increased. Silver content at the segregation nodes of silver in tin alloys was independent of initial concentration and considerably in excess of the eutectic composition. SINCE the investigation of cell formation at advancing solid-liquid interfaces by Rutter and Chalmers,' a large volume of work has been dedicated to the determination of solidification conditions under which a planar interface will break down into cellular form. Early experiments were explained satisfactorily by the concept of constitutional supercooling,2 but, due to poor measurement of temperature gradients in the liquid, lack of accurate data on liquid diffusion and equilibrium distribution coefficients, and uncertainty about the effects of thermal and solute convection, these experiments cannot be used as proof for the theory. More recent work, however, has shown that under conditions where convection is eliminated or can be ignored good correlation is observed.3,4 Investigations into segregation at cell caps5 and at cell nodes6-'' have been made, but no measurements appear to have been done on the overall, macroscopic segregation down a unidirectionally solidified rod of material which has solidified with a cellular substructure. This has practical importance in casting, where regions of material with cellular substructure are often encountered, and also in zone refining where the thermal conditions necessary for a planar interface are unattainable. Further, as will be shown, the macroscopic segregation can give information on the following question. Granted that a cellular solid-liquid interface develops from a planar one when the conditions for constitutional supercooling are exceeded, how much supercooling is present after the cells have formed? EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE AND RESULTS Specimen Preparation. Specimens 25 cm long with a square cross section 0.6 by 0.6 cm were grown in graphite boats by solidification from one end. Alloy compositions are given in Table I. Two specimens of each composition were grown. The tin was 5-9 grade and the silver and thallium both 4-9 grade. Ag110 and Tl204 were used as tracers. Each composition had the same quantity of tracer so that auto radiographs of specimens containing different concentrations of the same element could be easily compared. Thermocouples inserted through the lid of the boat into a dummy specimen showed that, over the first 10 cm of growth, thermal conditions were quite steady, with a rate of interface advance of 5.8 cm per hr and a temperature gradient in the melt ahead of the interface of 3.0°C per cm. The specimens were seeded from tin crystals of a common orientation to eliminate orientation effects. Dilution of the specimen by seed material was minimized by the provision of a narrow neck between specimen and seed crystal. Macrosegregation. After growth, the specimens were sectioned with a spark cutter. The rods of silver alloy were cut into 1-cm lengths and analyzed for Ag110 using a y -ray counter with fixed geometry. The specimens containing thallium were cut into 2-cm lengths and analyzed for T1 204 by taking 13 counts from each end of the cut lengths through an aperture in lead sheet approximately 0.4 cm square. The results are summarized in Figs. 1 and 2. To find the effective distribution coefficient for the silver in tin alloys under smooth interface conditions, the region of substructure at the bottom surface of one of the 10 ppm specimens, see Fig. 3, was removed by spark machining before counting. Autoradiography. For both alloy systems the samples were polished on sections taken alternately parallel and perpendicular to the growth direction, and autoradiographed by placing the polished surfaces in contact with Kodak "Process Ortho" film. Figs. 3 and 4 show the structures revealed. The alloy containing 10 ppm Ag showed substructure only after a few centimeters of growth, and then substructure was limited to a narrow layer at the base. The "speckled" substructure reported previously in this system4 is here clearly seen to be an intermediate stage between planar and cellular interface conditions. For the last few years, a new and innovative technique has been successfully used to determine refractory and castable thickness in various metallurgical vessels. The acousto ultrasonic-echo (AU-E) technique uses stress waves to detect metal penetration and delaminations within refractory linings. In addition, it is capable of measuring the thickness of refractory layers and build-up material. The inspection and measurements can be carried out while the furnace is in full operation. The present paper discusses the principles of the AU-E technique, and its advantages and limitations. A number of case studies are presented to demonstrate various capabilities of this new Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) technique.

When sintered disks of synthetic chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) were leached in acidified aqueous solutions of ferric sulfate, the following reaction stoichiometry was obtained: CuFeS2 + 2Fe2(SO4)3 = CuSO4 + 5FeSO4 + 2S Over the temperature range from 50º to 94ºC, the reaction displayed parabolic kinetics. The parabolic rate constant for the dissolution of copper is given by the equation: log.k(mg2/cm4-hr)= 11.850 - 3780/T The activation energy for the dissolution process is 17 ± 3 kcal per mole. The parabolic kinetics have been attributed to the progressive thickening of a sulfur film on the surface of the chalcopyrite. When the leaching solutions contain less than 0.01 molar Fe+3 , the Fe concentration influences the rate of leaching, probably through a mechanism involving the diffusion of ferric sulfate through the sulfur layer. At higher Fe+3 concentrations, the rate control in the leaching. reaction has been attributed to the diffusion of ferrous sulfate through the sulfur. The rate of reaction is insensitive to changes in acid concentration and in disk rotation speed. ThE reaction of acidic ferric sulfate solutions with various sulfide minerals is of practical interest for both bacterial and heap leaching. This leaching medium is generally used with low-grade ores that cannot be treated profitably by conventional means. In both bacterial leaching1-3 and heap leaching, the active agent for sulfide dissolution is ferric sulfate. Although the reactions of ferric sulfate with chalcocite, covellite, and bornite have been investigated,4*7 the kinetics of leaching chalcopyrite with ferric sulfate have not been thoroughly studied. This paper reports a study of that reaction. EXPERIMENTAL Reagent-grade sulfur was purified by the method of Bacon and FanelliB and then it was vacuum-distilled to remove any soluble magnesium salts that had been introduced during the purification procedure.9 From stoichiometric quantities of the purified sulfur and hydrogen-reduced electrolytic copper sheet (99.90 pct Cu), CuS was synthesized at 450°C in a vacuum-sealed, pyrex vessel. About 24 hr was required for the completion of the reaction. A similar procedure involving hydrogen-reduced iron wire (99.90 pct Fe) was used to synthesize FeS1.002. A 2-furnace arrangement was required. The iron was heated to 800°C while the sulfur was maintained at about 400°C. Although the reaction to consume the sulfur was rapid, the material required additional heating (1 week) in a sealed silica ampoule at 800°C before it was homogenized. X-ray powder diffraction analysis confirmed that the copper sulfide was covellite and that the iron sulfide was troilite. The composition of the iron mineral was confirmed by wet chemical analysis. The two sulfides were ground to minus 100 mesh, weighed in equimolar amounts, mixed thoroughly, and pressed into pellets at 80,000 psi. The pellets were vacuum-sealed in pyrex ampoules and then sintered for 3 days at 550°C after an initial heating at 450°C for a few hours. The pellets were then cooled, polished with 3/0 emery paper, rinsed in acetone, and stored. The material had the characteristic brassy color of chalcopyrite and was shown by X-ray diffraction to be CuFeS2. Microscopic examination of the polished surfaces revealed small inclusions of pyrite (approximately 0.5 vol pct) as the only impurity. The presence of small amounts of a second iron compound will not alter the amount of dissolved copper but might increase the amount of ferrous ion slightly. It was calculated that dissolution of all of the pyrite and 100 mg of Cu (a typical value) would change the expected ferrous concentration by only 4 pct. Microscopic examination of a pellet after leaching revealed that the pyrite was not preferentially solubilized; only those pyrite grains at the surface were attacked. Hence, the pyrite is unlikely to alter the rate of copper dissolution. The chalcopyrite disks were about 1.7 mm thick and 27 mm in diam. They were about 80 pct of theoretical density, and for this reason their true reaction area was somewhat larger than the 5.8 sq cm area presented by the polished face. The disks were cemented to lucite cylinders in such a way that only the polished face was exposed. The disks were then leached by methods previously described.6,7 RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Stoichiometry and Kinetics. The initial experiments were directed to the problem of resolving the stoichiometry of the leaching reaction. Disks of CuFeS2 were leached at 80°C for various periods of time in acidified ferric sulfate solutions that were protected from oxidation by a cover of flowing nitrogen. When the disks had been partly leached, they were removed, their soluble salts were washed out, and then they were treated with CS2 in a Soxhlet extraction apparatus. The ratio of elemental sulfur to dissolved copper thus obtained was approximately 2 to 1. After the extraction of elemental sulfur from the pellet, the residue consisted of unreacted chalcopyrite only. The January 1988 issue of Engineering and Mining Journal includes two short articles on blasting practices in surface gold mines (Anon., 1988 ; Carr , 1988). A reader of these articles learns, among other things, that a "12 x 13 ft" blasting pattern is used at the Carson Hill Mine, and a "17-ft burden and 18-ft spacing" is used at Echo Bay Mineral's Borealis operation, while at Mascot's Nickel Plate Gold Mine "ore shots are on a 10 x 10 ft" pattern. Like a new edition of the World Book Almanac, these articles are overflowing with useful tidbits of technical data; but, they never mention why the particular blasting patterns were selected. A survey carried out during the Winter of 1988 at six surface gold mines in the western United States also failed to produce a satisfactory answer. The responses from mine planning engineers to the question "why is your blasting pattern X by Y", reduced to "we use X by Y here because we used X by Y at our last operation, and it worked ok." Certainly, with the available decades of experience and professional practice in blast holes design, rock fragmentation in surface mines has been thoroughly investigated. However, and this is the central issue, fragmentation of the rock is not the primary purpose of most rotary drill holes in surface gold mines. This paper points to the timely importance of commencing a centrally recognised perpetual collection of mineral specimens in the Northern Territory which has as one of its objectives the collection and preservation of Northern Territory minerals of scientific, educational and heritage value. Currently in the Northern Territory there is no government department or institution that has a resourced coordinated state-wide objective to collect and document collectable mineral specimens. Specimens held in storage by the Department of Mines and Energy and the Museum and Art Galleries of the NT are not catalogued and owe their existence to fortuitous circumstances, not as a result of a planned systematic scientific approach to mineralogy. Northern Territory mineral species and unique specimens have and will continue to be driven to extinction while no central and active, recognised repository exists. This situation persists despite the fact mineral production is the Territory's largest income earner. The paper presents the arguments that hopefully will assist decision-makers to commence development of a state mineral collection lodged within an appropriate institution in the Northern Territory.

"The traditional technologies for production of the coprecipitated and deposited catalysts are analyzed from the standpoint of diversion of application of the feedstock and increase of efficiency for its usage. The options for return of the metals of spent catalysts to the catalysts production are described. The novel environmentally friendly and cost efficient approach for reutilization of the spent catalysts is realized in practice. It anticipates application along with spent catalysts of the waste generated in the catalytic productions. Reutilization of the Ni-containing catalysts is referred as an illustration. Introduction The recent development of large catalytic manufacturing for organic and inorganic synthesis, and petroleum refinery as well as for applied environmental catalysis has brought about increase and diversification of catalysts production. The generation of spent catalysts has been increased correspondently. The feedstock for production of catalysts is mostly metals in a form of nitrates, carbonates, hydroxides, hydroxydcarbonates. Sometimes salts of organic acids, of ammoniates, of chlorides and of sulphates occur. All these materials are scarce and expensive. So their repeated use by reutilization of spent catalysts is very actual issue. The traditional recycling the Fe-, Cr-, Ni-, Cu- or Zn-containing spent catalysts are carried out by pyrometallurgical reclamation of pure metals or alloys. They can not be used directly in production of catalysts [1, 2]. The hydrometallurgical approach is used for recycling spent catalysts with PGM, W, Mo, Co, Ni or Cu. It provides production of salts of these metals in a form of sulphates, chlorides, carbonates, hydroxydcarbonates and sometimes nitrates or ammoniates. Only a limited number of these salts can be used directly in production of catalysts. Material losses during catalysts production The basic feedstock for manufacturing coprecipitated and deposited catalysts that may be produced from the spent catalysts is aqueous solutions of metals nitrates. Their production is based on application of nitric acid as a dissolvent. About half of it is lost with the flue gases in a form of nitrates vapor and nitrogen oxides (II, IV). In view of the rising generation of wastewater containing metals, sustainable and clean techniques to recover them are being researched. This study investigated the adsorption of aluminum, cobalt, chromium, copper, iron (III), magnesium, manganese, nickel and zinc presents in a synthetic ef fluent by chelating ion exchange resin Dowex XUS43605. The resin was tested in columns experiments and was analyzed the flow rate (0.45, 0.66 and 1.11 BV/h), at pH 1.5 and 20 °C. After loading the column, the elution experiments occurred with 1 M of H2SO4 and 4 M of NH4O. The concentration of the metals in solution was obtained by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry energy dispersive (EDX). The results showed that the breakthrough experimental curves demonstrated that the main metals (aluminum, cobalt, manganese and zinc) were immediately broken through just after the initiation of the feeding, while the breakthrough of copper began later. Therefore, the study showed that the chelating resin could be used to treat contaminated effluents with metals.
