One of the critical problems involved in deep coalmines is unusual gas emissions. Many researchers agree that there is a relationship between coal gas emissions and geological features such as tectonics or geological disturbances, gas content, properties of the coal and rock and the mininginduced stress state in the coal seam and rock. Thus, the present paper intends to investigate complex mechanical phenomena during the process of gas emission in underground coal-mines. A program of laboratory testing was undertaken to study the effects of temperature and pressure on mechanisms of gas emission. It must be noted that this paper describes new techniques developed to simultaneously measure deformation and gas pressure, as well as flux during the test, taking the characteristics of gas transport into consideration under certain temperature and pressure conditions. The results indicate that under certain temperature and pressure conditions, gases adsorbed to coal start to desorb, and increase the pore pressure. High pressure gases entering coal fractures can generate high tensile stresses near the crack tips, leading to crack propagation and coalescence, which in turn can cause the specimen to dilate. From the experimental viewpoint, these test results may help us discern why mining seismic events can trigger gas emissions.

FOUR factors that largely determine the end product obtained when cement and water are mixed are the chemical composi-tion of the cement, the fineness to which the cement is ground, the amount of mixing water used, and the procedure used in mixing the slurry. In order to study the effect of two of these factors, the other two, the chemical composition and method of mixing, are kept constant, leaving as variables fineness and water-cement ratio. Through years of experimentation and usage it has been well established that the reduction of cement clinker to a very fine state by grinding improves its cementing value, principally because the reaction between cement and water takes place only at the surface of the cement particle, further action being hindered by the accumulation of reaction products that tend to coat the unreacted material. Similarly, the greater the surface exposed, the greater the proportion of the cement that reacts, and the lower the amount of residue that is unreacted and so remains inert and unable to make any contribution to cementing properties.] Although it is more expensive to manufacture a finely ground cement than a coarser cement, the advantages of fine grinding of construction cements were so marked that the fineness of cement has increased considerably in past years. When the manufacture of special oil-well cements was begun, it was necessary to consider properties of cement that previously were considered of minor importance, foremost of these being pumpability. Since, with the water-cement ratio constant, a finely ground cement will produce a neat slurry of higher consistency and shorter time of pumpability than will a coarser cement, there is a tendency to grind oil-well cements to a lower degree of fineness. Therefore, in order to produce oil-well cements that will make a slurry having a long time of pumpability, cements are manufactured that because of their coarseness generally are Poorer cementing materials than some of the more finely ground construction and on the other hand, often it is necessary to Pump oil-well cements for long periods of time to place them properly behind a string of casing in a deep well, and since high strength is not of foremost importance for such cement, there is room for considerable controversy concening the proper fineness range.

PART A. ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT – GENERAL Paragraph 1. Electrical Equipment; Examination. All electric equipment shall be examined, tested, and properly main¬tained by a qualified person to assure safe operating conditions. The examinations and tests shall be performed at intervals not exceeding six (6) months unless otherwise specified in Parts A, B, C, D, and E. When a potentially dangerous condition is found on electric equipment, such equipment shall be removed from service until such condition is corrected. A record of such examinations shall be kept and made available to an authorized representative of the Secretary and to the authorized repre¬sentative of the miners in such mine. Each item of major equipment, in¬cluding substations, switchgear, load centers, and so forth except powered hand tools, shall be recorded separately. The record of such examination shall include all dangerous conditions found, corrective action taken, and name of examiner, and shall be signed by the person responsible for main¬taining the equipment in safe operating condition, who shall also be a qualified person. Paragraph 2. Electrical Work; Qualified Personnel. No electrical work shall be performed on electrical distribution circuits or equipment, except by a qualified person or by a person trained to perform electrical work and to maintain electrical equipment under the direct supervision of a qualified person. This paper presents the results of a comprehensive pre-production pile testing programme for the US$ 800 million 1400MW Coal-Fired Jimah Power Plant Project in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia. The testing programme included high-strain dynamic testing and fully instrumented static axial and lateral load testing of driven prestressed concrete piles and bored cast-in-place piles. A highlight of the testing programme was the pioneering use of the Global Strain Extensometer (GloStrExt) Method, a deformation monitoring system that uses advanced pneumatically- or hydraulically-anchored extensometers and a novel analytical technique to monitor loads and displacements down the shaft and at the toe of driven prestressed concrete piles. The experience with the testing programme for the Jimah Project also demonstrates the possibility of achieving notable breakthroughs, not only in the monitoring, evaluation and reporting of pile foundation behaviour dynamics but also in our understanding of the mechanisms that underpin such behaviour. These significant gains are undeniably a direct result of the committed and co-operative relationship among the project owner, design/builder, specialist piling subcontractors, pile suppliers and pile instrumentation and testing specialists.

"The construction industry is witnessing an upsurge in demand by property developers to have basements incorporated into their residential and commercial development schemes. This is attributable to perceived improvement to aesthetic and commercial values of buildings by underground space, amongst property owners. This trend is compelling more owners of buildings with no basements to explore the possibility of creating underground additional space beneath their existing buildings. The creation of a basement beneath an existing building entails the installation of a reinforced concrete (RC) underpinning system, temporary works, bulk excavation to basement formation level and construction of the basement structure, with associated aesthetic finishes.The L-shaped segmental RC underpins are a common system of choice for such underpinning works. They are multi-functional; providing vertical support to the existing superstructure, providing lateral support to earth and groundwater, supporting temporary and permanent surcharge loads from adjacent structures and services, whilst also forming part of the basement slab. This paper focuses on the first function of the Lshaped RC underpins; capacity under vertical compressive loading from the superstructure. The most common industry approach for the prediction of vertical capacities of L-shaped underpins is the oldfashioned Meyerhof’s (1953, 1963) effective width method, which is based on the traditional bearing capacity theory, whilst accounting for correction factors for eccentricity and foundation depth.The traditional bearing capacity formula is surrounded by a significant degree of uncertainty; estimates are highly user-dependent, as capacity prediction is sensitive to the chosen angle of shearing resistance (?), while there are difficulties in accurately measuring the in-situ ??value of cohesionless soils. In addition, the effective width approach has been shown to be very conservative by many research workers. The segmental RC underpins presented in this paper have been designed with an alternative less conservative method, which involves the use of a recently proposed consistent work-hardening plasticity model calibrated with field-based tests on footings of various aspect ratios and relative embedment in sand. The paper highlights the principles behind underpinning works for urban basement construction, the design of L-shaped RC underpins with the recently proposed plasticity model and the advantages of the method over traditional bearing capacity solutions and pre-existing plasticity models."

Introduction Lyon, with 1.1 million inhabitants, is the third largest city in France after Paris and Marseille. It is a lively industrial centre. Lyon lies at the intersection of many transport routes and at the fluence of Rhone and Saone. Like all large cities, Lyon is attempting to alleviate inner city traffic problems by constructing a metro. Metro construction in Lyon began with tunnels built by cut and cover methods along the streets. Deep diaphram walls, which were back anchored and toed into imperveous strata, formed the excavation walls. It is a very economic and simple method. However during the construction period, it has the disavantage of strangling urban life for several years. It is therefore increasingly being replaced by subsurface tunnelling methods. As it was decided to build the metro tunnel between the Guillotiere and St. Jean stations, and thus cross under the Rhone and Saone, the client, Semaly, put the contract out for a competitive tender in which the general parameters were defined. Line, level and construction method were left to the contractor. There was an extensive examination of the tenders, during which reference projects from competitors in Japan were visited, as well as in Germany. Finally the consortium of Dragages, Campenon Bernard, Colas and Hochtief was awarded the contract to drive this tunnel section with an hydro-shield and an extruded steel fibre concrete lining, a Hochtief design.

The complexity of surface mining operations is increasing as attention is directed towards mining larger tracts of lower grade, higher cost deposits. Large tonnage requirements from these mines necessitate utilization of many large pieces of equipment. This equipment must be utilized efficiently, with production maintained at or near designed capacities. Basically, the problem is to select, size, and schedule equipment to maximize profits and minimize adverse environmental impacts (Anon., 1977). The time, manpower, and cost limitations required to analyze a wide variety of situations and alternatives in planning surface mines have been sidestepped with the application of simulation methods using a digital computer. Since a simulator can be programmed to represent the situations which are to be analyzed, many alternatives can be evaluated in a relatively short time. Input variables are easily changed and the resulting changes which take place in the system can be analyzed. When standard methods of analyses are applied, weeks and many man-hours are involved in analyzing large-scale mining operations. At the same time many simplifying assumptions must be made since these operations are dynamic and transient. Hence, it becomes difficult to make sound engineering decisions and take proper and timely corrective action in the absence of simulation methods. This chapter is concerned with the application of one such method, namely, the open-pit materials handling simulator (OPMHS) developed by the Mining Engineering Section, The Pennsylvania State University (Manula, Albert, and Ramani, 1977).

At depths greater than several kilometres in the crust, elevated temperature, confining pressure, and the presence of reactive pore fluids typically drives rapid destruction of permeability in fractured and porous rock. Ongoing deformation is required to regenerate permeability and facilitate the high fluid flux necessary to produce hydrothermal ore systems. A dominant influence on the evolution of fluid pathways in hydrothermal systems is provided by stress states, fluid pressures and reactions that drive permeability enhancement and compete with permeability destruction processes (Cox, Braun and Knackstedt, 2001). Gone are the days of stock-standard diamond beneficiation and final recovery circuits that could, with minor modifications, be adapted to treat any diamond-bearing ore source. A new era has dawned, offering the opportunity to streamline existing diamond processing operations or develop simpler, more efficient, and economical diamond processing plants, with the focus on more efficient comminution, beneficiation, and final recovery. This change in scene has been brought about by: ? The introduction, rapid development, and maturation of multiple comminution, sorting, and recovery technologies ? The need to adapt to a new standard of project approach post the commodity super-cycle phase, where optimizing existing operations and developing scalable, ?fit for purpose? new mines are fast becoming the norm in diamond processing plants in both primary and alluvial operations ? The quest for energy efficiency and lower labour costs ? More remote and inaccessible reserves (under lakes, tops of mountains etc.). This paper serves to identify some technology advances and demonstrates how these could be considered as replacements for or in combination with conventional technologies to arrive at an optimum techno-economic solution. To name a few applications/technologies: ? Comminution: conventional cone crusher, modified/specialized cone crusher, and the high-pressure grinding roll (HPGR). Although significant advances have been made in recent years, this paper only briefly covers comminution within the beneficiation circuit design ? Waste sorting: NIR (near-infrared) sorting, optical (colour) sorting, XRF (X-ray fluorescence) ? Primary concentration by combining dense media separation (DMS) with either XRT (X-ray transmissive), pulsed X-ray, jigs, or pan plants depending on the application, scale, and economics ? Final recovery of diamonds with either conventional X-ray technology, pulsed X-ray technology, or XRT. From recent studies, it can be concluded that there is no longer a standard solution, but rather the ?right? or appropriate solution. Through combining a sound knowledge of the ore source (ore dressing studies or onmine data gathering) and leveraging off the advances in technologies, one is able, through trade-off studies, to arrive at the ultimate techno-economic configuration, the ?right? solution. Emphasis is placed on maximizing diamond recoveries through appropriate technology selection and minimizing the associated costs in an effort to de-bottleneck or improve efficiencies of existing diamond processing plants, or to arrive at the ideal new diamond process plant design..

The balance of knowledge and understanding among these participants combined with the competition for capital, contributes to the standards for our mining market in a way that the market operator simply cannot replicate by market rules alone.

Blasting in Norwegian mines is often carried out by contractors who tend to look for the cheapest solution, without concern about fragment quality. The requirementsfor a contractor are usually only related to the maximum size of boulders and the quantity per month. Even when the owners of the mine are responsible for blasting, very little effort is made to optimise the blasting process. This paper presents test methods which were used and results from small-scale and full-scale blasting tests. In the small-scale tests, cubes 500 x 500 x 500 mm of four different rock types were blasted in a chamber, using two types of dynamite explosive. The velocity of detonation (VOD) for the dynamite explosives was 3000 m/s and 6000 m/s respectively. Three cubes of each rock type were blasted with each type of explosive, and a total of six cubes of each rock type was used. The entire muckpile (approximately 350 kg) was- sieved and weighed after each blast and fragments between 8-16 mm were tested for impact values and flakiness. The results of these tests clearly showed improvement in fragmentation the closer the acoustic impedance ratio of the explosive (VOD x density) over the rock (Cp density) was equal to one. The results also showed that the quality of the fragments (in terms of impact values) tends to be better when the cubes are blasted with the high velocity dynamite.

Panned stream-sediment, geochemistry-based gold exploration in those parts of the southeastern Piedmont proximal to the Fall Line must take into account potential contamination from basal fluvial sediments of the Coastal Plain. Anomalies attributable to the incorporation of placer gold of Coastal Plain origin into modern Piedmont drainages have been identified in portions of Lee, Macon, and Tallapoosa Counties, AL, and Baldwin and Hancock Counties, GA. Identification and interpretation of such multicyclic anomalies must be based on knowledge of the local maximum Cretaceous transgression, paleotopography, modern and paleofluvial system dynamics, and fineness trends and Au-Ag zoning in gold grains.

Overcasts are indispensible ventilation control devices to permit one airway to pass over another without mixing in room and pillar coal mining. The airflow distribution inside the overcast depends on its spe-cific configuration at which the flow enters into it. This study uses 3D numerical simulation to examine the pressure and velocity distributions inside an overcast. The effects of the overcast angle on the flow field are also examined. The flow is assumed to be turbulent and isothermal and the standard k-e model is utilized. Simulated results display flow separation and recirculation regions of different sizes occurring not only upstream and downstream from the overcast but also inside it. The results also show that the size of the recirculation regions in-creased with the increase in the angle before and after the overcast influencing significantly the flow field and pressure losses. The stream-lines are plotted to show the 3D structure of the flow field. The results from the simulation can guide overcast design commonly used in un-derground coal mines. The steadily growing demand for metals and their price increase at metal exchanges make the mining and utilization of marine mineral resources like polymetallic nodules, manganese crusts or sulfide deposits in the near future a viable option to potentially increase the supply of base and precious metals. For a country with low potential to mine land-based resources like Germany, the industrial recovery of metals from marine mineral resources could lead to a decreased dependency on imports. In this study, seafloor massive sulfides from the German license area in the Indian Ocean (Kairei field, Southern Central Indian Ridge) are treated to recover copper and precious metals. The aim of the project is to demonstrate the transferability of existing metallurgical techniques to the raw material of deep-sea massive sulfides. As a starting point to process this unconventional resource, samples from the Indian Ocean are chemically analyzed and mineralogical characterized. A comparison is carried out between the samples and land-based copper resources, to highlight the potential which lies in mining the deep-sea floor. This paper will show the general possibility of applying a two-stage pyrometallurgical process, based on a concentrate smelting operation, followed by a converting operation in lab-scale to the provided samples of massive sulfides. Generated slag from the concentrate smelting and the converting operation are investigated by X-ray diffraction to determine the mineralogical composition. The two-stage pyrometallurgical process is investigated by the thermochemical modelling tool FactSageTM 7.2 to evaluate the phase distribution of relevant elements between the metal, matte, slag and gas phase. The thermochemical boundaries of the pyrometallurgical process are therefore set and the results of the thermochemical study can be used as an indicator for the efficiency of an up-scaled process and the generated amount of side-streams, which need to be further treated or circulated back into the process. INTRODUCTION Seafloor massive sulfides (SMS) are the third kind of discovered deep-sea minerals besides ferromanganese nodules and cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts (Sharma, 2017). They occur in water depths around 250–4,000 m (Koschinsky et al., 2018). SMS are characterized by a high base metal and sulfide content. They were created by fluid circulation and hydrothermal convection over time (Han et al., 2018). Commonly, areas rich in SMS are associated with hydrothermal vent fields on the seafloor (Keith et al., 2018).

Determination of the mineralogical location (deportment) of minor and trace elements (including credit and penalty elements) in base metal concentrates can indicate whether further processing is likely to (a) reduce the levels of the penalty elements, and/or (b) direct selected elements into other plant products, thereby increasing current concentrate grade or increasing payment for credit elements. To determine the deportment of elements requires knowledge of the proportions of the minerals present and their individual element contents. In addition, knowledge of the liberation and locking is important, as this can affect any possible further processing. Mineral proportions can be determined by a variety of methods including chemical analysis, point-counting, area-counting, QEM*SEM, image analysis and mineral separation. In the case of a Broken Hill zinc concentrate, several of these methods were used and gave consistent results.

'Gold-telluride mineralization was deposited in quartz veins which cut a Late Cretaceous tonalite pluton emplaced near the southern margin of the Peninsular tectono-stratigraphic terrane in south-central Alaska. The gold-bearing veins formed shortly after the development of a widespread Cu-Mo sheeted quartz vein system. Early mineral assemblages consist of quartz, white mica, pyrite, and arsenopyrite (wall rock only). Subsequently, pyrite. sphalerite, chalcopyrite, zoned tetrahedrite and gold precipitated within multiply fractured veins. Late stage galena, tellurides (altaite, nagyagite, coloradoite), and Pb-Sb or Pb-Cu-Bi sulfosalta with gold constitute bonanza ore assemblages that are variably associated with quartz, white mica, ankerite, and calcite. Fluid inclusion evidence coupled with mineral assemblage paragenesis suggests the depletion of volatiles (C02, H2S) and cooling resulted in the precipitation of high grade gold mineral assemblages.

Results of the analyses of 151 crude oils from 123 oilfields in the Williston basin are presented. Production statistics are compiled by geographical areas within the basin, by geological age of the producing zones, by States, and by field for the nine fields with the greatest production. Characteristics of the oils are tabulated, and correlations are included to show relationships between properties of the oils and some factors in the environment. Properties of the oils in some instances imply that there has been migration and mixing of the oils between productive formations of different geological time periods.

Identification of seismic events detected under a Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty requires a clear physical understanding of the different types of seismic sources including mining explosions, rock bursts, mine collapse and small, shallow earthquakes. Constraint of the operative physical processes in the source region and linkage to the generation of seismic waveforms with particular emphasis on regional seismograms is needed. In order to properly address the multi-dimensional aspect of data sets designed to constrain these sources, we are investigating a number of modern visualization tools that have only recently become available with new, highspeed graphical computers that can utilize relatively large data sets. The results of this study will provide a basis for identifying important physical processes in the source region that contribute to regional seismograms.

Opportunities to monitor and control primary grinding mill performance are strongly sought after in the mineral processing industry. Currently, limited on-line information about mill charge motion and content is available to mill operations for control purposes, leading to periods of lower throughput, instability, variable product size and accelerated mill liner and lifter wear. In response to this need, CSIRO has developed an on-line surface vibration monitor for primary grinding mills which produces data that has been shown to provide new information about the mill charge in terms of toe and shoulder position, as well as potentially key features such as the overall charge level, the distribution between rock and balls in the mill, and the impact of the charge on the mill liners and lifters. This paper outlines the key features of the on-line monitor system, particularly those relating to data transmission, data analysis, and the design of the monitor and its independent power supply. It describes the coupling of single vibration sensor data from the CSIRO on-line monitor to the actual operating conditions of a SAG mill and how the vibration response and hence mill operating conditions vary as a function of time, including during mill equipment failures such as a broken discharge grate. Opportunities for improved mill control based on the data from the on-line monitor are also discussed, as well as the implications in terms of mill processing and maintenance performance. Recently a CSIRO monitor was also installed on a ROM ball mill and analysis of the vibration sensor data from this installation is currently underway. Preliminary findings from this installation will be presented along with comparisons of generic information, such as toe position (measurement precision and operation variability) and vibration signal (intensity, sensitivity and operation variability), between this type of primary grinding mill and AG/SAG mills.

The precious metallogenic belt and its geoloqical-tectonic location in eastern China.The precious metallogenic belt of eastern China is located in the western part of the Pacific gold metallogenic belt, and occurs in the upper levels of the continent cut by a deep fault structure tending NNE and NE, and active during the Mesozoic. The precious metallogenic period ranges mainly from Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous (160 Ma-110 Ma); subordinate mineralisation occurred during the Hercynian period, and was rare in the proterozoic.Seven precious metallogenic belts are recognised from east to west, i.e. from continent to the margin active belts, as follows:1.
