It is well-known1-4 that Fe-Si alloys from approximately 9 to 27 at. pct Si show an ordered structure of the Fe3Si type at room temperature. Recently Meinhardt and Krisement,' through an investigation of Fe-Si alloys at room temperature by neutron diffraction, discovered that at 10.8 at. pct Si ordering of the FeSi type occurs while above this composition the normal Fe3Si-type superstructure appears. This FeSi type of ordering was also found by Davies8 as indicated by X-ray diffraction measurements on an Fe-8.7 at. pct Si alloy. Meinhardt and Krisement7 extended their neutron-diffraction work and determined the phase-boundary temperatures for both FeSi- and Fe3Si-type ordering. Acidic waters typified by acid mine drainage, copper dump leach solutions and steel pickle liquors will typically contain SO4-2 and cations such as Fe+3, AI+3 and for the pickle liquors, sometimes Cr+3. These acidic waters will often react with limestone, present naturally or introduced for purposes of solution neutralization, to form reaction - inhibiting coatings of gypsum and gelatinous, metal hydroxide precipi¬tates. The coating thickness, as a function of pH, was quantified for both reactive (calcite, limestone) and non-reactive (quartz, barite, fluorite) minerals, and the data were related to the hydroxy species diagrams and to solution turbidity measurements. Coatings were found on the reactive minerals at a lower bulk solution pH than on the non-reactive minerals.

Four different scales of observation were used to evaluate the potential effects of a fluvial tailings deposit on water quality along the flood plain of the upper Arkansas River south of Leadville, Colorado. First, we collected surficial material and subjected it to batch water-leaching test. Second, we excavated and leached an intact eight-inch diameter core. Third, we examined the water quality of the shallow ground water beneath the fluvial tailings deposit, and fourth, we monitored water quality along a 5-km reach of the adjacent Arkansas River. Leaching of surficial samples indicates that there is a reservoir of readily water-soluble material yielding elevated metal concentrations and high acidity. However, there are minimal measurable water quality effects of the fluvial tailings deposit on the adjacent reach of the Arkansas River.

The metallurgical performance of column flotation is determined by the concentrate grade and recovery. Although the former can be continuously measured using an on-stream analyzer, the latter must be estimated by a material balance calculation based on seldom verified steady-state assumptions. Consequently, the automatic control and optimization of flotation columns should be performed using secondary variables having a strong influence on the metallurgical performance, such as froth depth, gas hold-up or bubble surface area flux and bias. The aim of this paper is to present a method to get froth depth and bias measurements using virtual sensors. Fractional factorial experiment design for the neural network calibration of the bias sensor, pilot plant results, and eventual industrial applications – including the possibility of achieving effective real-time optimization from bias and froth depth measurements – will also be discussed.

The Fiji Islands are remnants of a once continuous Solomon-Vanuatu-Fiji-Tonga volcanic arc (the Vitiaz arc), located at the boundary between the Indian-Australian and Pacific plates. They record a history of (i) arc volcanism the late Eocene to late Miocene, (ii) an extensive magmatic response to arc rifting (5.5-3.OMa) during which volcanism was dominated by shoshonitic to tholeiitic basalts, and as rifting continued, (iii) a transition from arc to intraplate volcanism. The Hunter Ridge-Hunter Fracture Zone separates the inactive South Fiji Basin from the actively spreading North Fiji Basin, and has been considered to be a transform zone, almost parallel to the motion vector of the Australian plate. However rocks dredged during the 1993 `Alize' cruise, from along the northern part of the Hunter Ridge are typical arc tholeiites, and therefore demand that subduction has occurred beneath the Hunter Ridge sometime during the last û 5Ma.

This report summarizes the results of a research project entitled "Fatal Accident Data Base Development." This project is the last project under Contract No. S0110601. Volumes I and 1I, "Industrial Engineering Study of Hazards Associated with Underground Coat Mine Production," summarize the original industrial engineering project and the Fatal Accident Report Analysis project. These projects were completed and accepted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines on December 10, 1971. Both volumes of the report have been made available by the Bureau to the public through the U. S. Department of Commerce technical information service. Another project under the same con tract, entitled "Equipment Operations Safety Study, ' was completed in January 1972 and the report was accepted by the U. S. B. M. at that time. The analysis in this Natal Accident. Data Lose Development report is closely related to analysis in both of the earlier reports. The original project involved an industrial engineering and safety of production operations for a representative sample of underground bituminous coal mines. The contactor was required to make recommendations 'in work practices, mining methods, equipment, and safety practices which can effectively reduce the fatality rate from rib and roof falls.' (Longwall mining methods were excluded from the study.) Time study and work element analyses were performed in over 50 mines as part of the field data gathering effort. Another requirement of the study was to develop sets of multiflow. Process charts, which are diagrammatic illustrations of the time-related interaction of mining, cycle job elements.

Narrow vein underground stope design engineers in Australia have expressed significant interest in the requirements and methodology for developing site-specific stability charts. This is largely due to a concern that existing stope stability charts inadequately take into account factors influencing narrow vein stope stability, such as the effect of backfill abutments and the effect of in stope pillars. This paper presents conclusions from a comprehensive statistical examination of case history requirements for a site specific stability chart and critiques literature arguments for site-specific charts. A new statistical analysis technique and a large comprehensive stability database enabled the authors to quantify case history requirements and any site-specific effects the model exhibits. The analyses indicated that a reliable stable-failure boundary requires at least 150 case histories, of which a minimum of 10 percent should be unstable stope surfaces. Marginal site-specific effects were observed for the operating conditions captured within the database. The authors conclude that the apparent site-specific effects noted in previous literature are attributable to operating conditions inadequately represented in the database. Such operating conditions could induce erroneous stability predictions at any site, and are therefore not truly site-specific. Following from these conclusions, a strategy for taking into account operating conditions particularly relevant to narrow vein mining has been proposed. In particular, the development of a chart that accounts for the effect of backfill abutments on stope stability. Backfill abutment effects are particularly relevant to mechanised narrow vein mining methods such as modified Avoca. Collaboration from at least five sites is required to obtain access to relevant data and underground drives for geotechnical mapping. Preliminary estimations indicate that approximately three months fieldwork is required to meet case history requirements. CMS data in conjunction with 3-dimensional design software will be used to calculate equivalent linear overbreak/slough (ELOS). In contrast to stable, failure, major failure and caving categorical variables, ELOS is an objective and continuous stability variable and is therefore, more conducive to mathematical modelling.

"Hundreds of diamonds have been found in the United States. The majority of the discoveries occurred during the 19th century as a by-product of placer gold mining. Most of these early diamond finds have no known source, and in many cases are situated in areas unfavorable for diamond exploration based on current models that require kimberlite or lamproite to be emplaced in a stable Archean craton or Proterozoic craton margin.Diamonds have also been recovered in situ from lamproite at Murfreesburo, Arkansas, from kimberlite in the Lake Ellen region of Michigan, and in several kimberlites in the Colorado–Wyoming State Line district. Unverifed reports also suggest that diamonds may have been recovered from other related intrusions at a number of localities in the United States.IntroductionTo date, diamonds have been recovered in situ from kimberlite in the Colorado–Wyoming State Line district and from a kimberlite in Michigan. Additionally, diamonds have been recovered from lamproites in Arkansas. Diamonds have also been reported from kimberlite in Kansas, and from peridotite in New York and Maryland. However, these latter reports have not been verified."

In mid-1970, Park City Ventures, a Utah partnership of Asarco and the Anaconda Company, initiated a six-phase exploration and development program in the Park City District, Utah. Geologic studies had delineated a number of exploration targets in several areas of the district. Discovery of ore in any of the target areas and continued favorable downdip development below then productive ore bodies would allow for reserve expansion and mill construction. The targets were: replacement mineralization in the Mississippian Humbug formation below productive ore bodies on the east flank of the Park City anticline; replacement mineralization in the Humbug formation in an unexplored fault block in the footwall of the Hawkeye structure on the east flank of the anticline; vein and replacement mineralization along the Silver Fissure; potentially higher grade replacement mineralization in the Humbug formation in a theorized structural block on the west flank of the anticline beneath the Ontario vein; replacement mineralization in the Permian Park City formation in the West End shaft area of the Silver King mine; vein mineralization along the Back vein in the Judge mine. In 1971 the Judge and Silver King Projects were suspended, due to a 30% cutback in the exploration budget. In spite of the cutback additional reserves were developed below the Humbug East Flank ore bodies; a major zone of ore grade mineralization was discovered along the Silver Fissure, five new ore bodies were found in the Humbug and Doughnut formations on the west flank of the anticline beneath the Ontario vein. First concentrates were shipped from a new mill in May 1975.

Large - scale tests at the Polish Safety in Mines Institute /established in 1925 as "Barbara" Experimental mine/ performed in underground and surface experimental galleries, simulating conditions in roadways in mines, are the basic source of knowledge about development and propagation of explosions. Investigations up to 1973 were performed under the Institute's former research director Professor W.B. Cybulski s supervision, whose handbook concerning combating of coal dust explosions in collieries has been also published in the U.S. (2), and are continued until now. For investigating explosions the "Barbara" Mine disposes of 170 m /7.5 sq m/, 200 m /5 sq m/ and 400 m /7.5 sq m/ underground gallieries as well as of 10 m, 25 m, 44 m and 100 m surface galleries. For example, in the 200 m gallery more than 5200, and in the 400 m gallery - more than 2200 test explosions have been performed. Basing on determination of explosion hazard in roadways in collieries and on data of scientific research performed at the Safety in Mines Institute, the strategy of combating the explosion hazard in mines was elaborated; it includes mainly diminishing of coal duet. deposition in roadways, and -because of the possible inefficiency of this safety means in some roadways in mechanized collieries -- the introduction of three additional defence lines against coal dust explosions. It should be mentioned that at the "Barbara" Mine the problem of coal dust explosion initiation was elaborated as contract work for the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The main aim of this paper is to discuss some aspects of methods and measures for combating coal dust explosion hazard in highly mechanized mines in the Polish mining industry where in some roadways explosible coal dust is present, but it is not the aim to evaluate the effectiveness of methods and measures for diminishing the make-up of coal dust and coal dust deposition rates in roadways.

High pressure grinding rolls have been utilized in various operations during the past four decades, simply due to their inherent mode of breakage that offers metallurgical benefits with pronounced energy reduction. For every new application, wear and in particular roll surface wear protection has always been the focal point of HPGR trade-off studies. Wear remains an important issue throughout a mine’s life given inevitable variations in the ore deposits properties. Hence, the capability of continuous scanning of rolls provides ample information about any deviations in the design values as well as their effect on the wear pattern. In part I of this manuscript, we present the feasibility of in-line scanning of roll surface in a 200 × 100 mm lab-scale HPGR. First, the in-line scanning was developed in a mock-up roll and then the scanner was moved to the laboratory-scale HPGR. We present the choice of scanners and the methods adopted to achieve high-level accuracy of determining wear. Even though we planned for micron-level precision of scanning, the inherent variability in shaft rotation was higher than the variability in the roll diameter due to wear. The hundred-kilogram mass processed in the HPGR was not sufficient to create enough wear that is discernible to the in-line scanner. Yet, the method tested is a promising avenue for inline scanning of HPGR rolls.

The behavior of arsenic and antimony in the Cu-0 system was thermodynamically investigated to understand their elimination during a blister-making stage in copper smelting. Firstly, the phase relations in a miscibility gap composed of the liquid slag and copper phases in the Cu-0-As and Cu-0-Sb systems at 1523 K were established by a quenching technique. It was found that arsenic and antimony distributed preferentially into the slag phase in the miscibility gap. Secondly, the activities of arsenic and antimony in the miscibility gap of these systems were determined at 1523 K by using a double Knudsen cell - mass spectrometer method. It was clarified that the activity of arsenic in the copper and slag phases showed the negative deviation from ideality while that of antimony in the copper phase a slightly positive deviation. These data obtained in this study suggest a possibility to eliminate arsenic and antimony by means of over-blowing in a converter after discharging the slag.

Stress-strain curves were obtained for single crystals of alpha brass in tension and in direct shear. Specimens were strained various amounts in a given slip direction, unloaded, and immediately strained in a second slip direction 60°, 120°, or 180&apos; from the original slip direction. Crystals strained in tension and direct shear had comparable critical resolved shear stresses and stress-strain curves. The density of slip lines in direct shear and in tension was essentially the same. The stress-strain curves obtained in shear were independent of initial orientation, choice of {111 } slip plane, choice of <110> slip direction, prior annealing temperature, and rate of cooling after annealing. There was no recovery after annealing for 4 hr at room temperature or 200°C; recovery was observed after 4 hr at 400°C. The crystals showed no asterism and mechanical properties were completely recoverable up to 20 pct strain. It was found that there is a barrier to slip in all latent close-packed directions, and that the magnitude of these barriers, evaluated at 3 pct strain, is proportional to prior strain and independent of the choice of latent direction in the {111} plane. The formation of Cottrell-Lomer barriers is discussed as a possible explanation for the hardening of the latent systems. AN idealized concept of plastic deformation indicates that a single crystal should yield at some stress that is dependent on crystal perfection and it should then continue to deform plastically by the process of "easy glide," which is characterized by a linear stress-strain curve and a low coefficient, ds/dE, of work-hardening. Hexagonal metal crystals generally conform to this ideal concept of laminar flow. In face-centered cubic metals the range of easy glide is always restricted in magnitude and it is strongly dependent on orientation, composition, crystal size, shape, surface preparation, and temperature. Since one of the principal differences between the two crystal systems, both of which deform by slip on close-packed planes, is the existence of secondary (latent) slip planes in the face-centered cubic crystals, it has been proposed that the transition from easy glide to turbulent flow, characterized by rapid linear hardening, is due to slip on secondary planes intersecting the primary plane.&apos;-.; However, the characteristic differences between individual face-centered cubic metals remain to be explained; in particular, it is not clear why the range of easy glide should vary so greatly in different metals and alloys similarly oriented for single slip. An investigation and comparison of different metals with respect to latent hardening on the primary slip plane should provide some of the information required to specify the necessary and sufficient conditions governing the transition from easy glide to turbulent flow. But, in order to accomplish this purpose, plastic strain must be produced by simple shear in a chosen plane and in a predetermined direction by some form of directed shear apparatus, the results of which must be correlated with the corresponding tension experiments. Two such experiments have been performed previously with zinc and with aluminum. Edwards, Washburn, and Parker" and Edwards and Washburn7 found that the strain-hardening coefficients in two latent directions in the basal plane of zinc were the same as in the primary direction. However, to initiate and propagate slip in either the [2110] or the [1210] direction, following primary slip in the [1l20] direction, it was necessary to increase the stress above that required to continue slip in the primary direction; when the direction of shear was reversed 180 deg plastic strain began at a much lower stress than that required to initiate slip in the original direction and the stress to propagate slip in the reverse direction was lower than the stress to continue slip in the forward direction, indicating a permanent loss of strain-hardening. Rohm and Kochendorfer observed softening in aluminum for all latent close-packed planes and directions. They also found that the critical resolved shear stress obtained from their direct shear apparatus was 50 pct lower than the value obtained from conventional tension tests, that the stress-strain curve was linear at 50 pct plastic strain, and that slip lines were not visible at strains less than 30 pct. At present it is uncertain whether these diverse results correspond to real differences in work-hardening characteristics of the close-packed planes of aluminum and zinc or to differences in experimental technique. In view of Read&apos;s analysis &apos;" of the stress distribution in the experimental arrangement of Rohm and Kochendorfer, there is some reason to question the significance of the latter results. In order to resolve this problem it is necessary to re-valuate the direct-shear technique and either repeat the previous measurements or investigate a third system. The latter choice seemed most likely to produce significant results with respect to work-hardening, and accordingly, it was decided to examine the hardening characteristics of the latent slip directions in alpha-brass. The choice of alpha-brass was dictated by the fact that easy glide is more extensive in this alloy than in any other face-centered cubic metal or alloy and, presumably, more nearly like the idealized hexagonal system. Experimental Procedure Crystals were made in graphite by the Bridge-man method in the form of cylinders, 11/2 in. diam and 8 to 9 in. long. Some information has been published on the sulphur dioxide concentration of gases from D wight-Lloyd machines sintering lead ores but most of this relates to the customary practice in which the charge is relatively high in lead and is sintered in two passes Over the machine. It is thought, therefore, that the following observations on sintering in one pass a low-lead, low-sulphur charge may be of interest. The data were obtained in sintering lead sulphide notation concentrates mixed with minus 20.mesh oxide ore, the mixture carrying 16,8 per cent Pb and 5.3 per cent S. No returns were used because of the limited amount of sulphur available as fuel, but the mixture pelletized readily. to make a satisfactorily permeable bed on the sintering machine. As there was a possibility that the SO z might be utilized, a series of runs was made to determine the concentration ofSO2 in the gases at different points along the wind box, and the effect on this concentration of changes in the wind-box vacuum. Several runs each were made with vacuums (as measured in inches of water at the wind box) of (1 2 to 1 in., (&apos;1 4 to 3% in. and (3) 6 to 5% in. The averages of the determinations from each series are platted On the graph (Fig, 1). The vertical scale shows the percentage by volume of SOz (as determined by the Reich method), and the horizontal scale shows the time e~pressed as percentage of the total sintering time. Sintering was considered to be complete when no SOz could be detected in the gases. In all cases the depth of bed was 4 1/2 in. and the weight of dry charge per square foot of hearth area was 45.2 lb. Other data are given in the table. The volume of gases corresponding to the several points along the wind box at which SO2 determinations were made could not be measured, but has been calculated from the SO2 Content and sulphur elimination on the assumption that the volume is uniform throughout the sintering period. This is not strictly true, as with a given vacuum the volume usually will drop slightly toward the middle of the period and increase toward the end. However, this made is a reasonable approximation. several interesting features are brought out by these data. In general, the published data on SO 2 concentration in sintering under ordinary conditions show a high SO2 concentration in the early stages followed by a rapid decrease in concentration and with relatively little SOz in the gases from the last half or third of the operation. In other words, the greater part of the sulphur elimination is obtained in the first third or half of the period. In these runs, the 6-in. vacuum, which approximates the usual operating condition, gives a curve that follows this customary pattern. Maximum SO2 concentration is obtained 234 min. after

In conducting a pressure build-up test on an oil well, it is often necessary to shut-in the well for a short time prior to initiation of the test. The effect of such a short tern shut-in on the resulting pressure build-up curve is derived. The derivation is based on the Kelvin point-source solution and is a straight forward extension of the fundarnental theory. The magnitude of the effect is evaluatecl and illustrated by an example. It is shown that if the production subsequent to the short term shut-in is at least 10 times the duration of the shrct-in, the effect will he less than 10 per cent. INTRODUCTION It often happens that before a pressure build-up test can be made an additional valve must be mounted on the wellhead, or on arrival at the well, it might be learned that the well had been shut-in several hours the previous day because of a shortage of tankage. In such cases the question is How will such an interruption of production affect the results of a pressure buildup test This work explains how to take account of such a short term shut-in in order that the test can proceed without further delay. The solution presented here makes use of the Kelvin point-source solution used by Horne1 in his treatment of the pressure build-up in wells. Use is also made of the super-position theorem. MATHEMATICAL DERIVATION The well is assumed to have been in production at a constant rate for a relatively long time (several days or more). It is then shut-in for a short time, after which it is again placed in production at the previous constant rate. It continues to produce at this rate until shut-in for a pressure build-up test. The Kelvin point-source solution is expressed by Eq. 1. The sequence of production rates is listed in Table I. "Construction of underground structures in urban areas is a very challenging work. There are generally two methods of construction, an open cut-and-cover and underground method. To eliminate the subsurface and surface disturbance and street traffic problems, underground method is preferred. The stress redistribution caused by underground excavation induces movements and deformation in the earth mass and ultimately at the ground surface. This is more pronounced in large space excavations. Generally pre-supporting system is used to control ground deformation and thus enhance its stability. In this paper an innovative pre-supporting system is presented. Concrete Arch Pre-supporting System (CAPS) is introduced in Tehran Metro in 2002. This method has roots in construction method of an Old Iranian small water tunnels, called Quanat. CAPS is an efficient method for stabilizing large span underground spaces constructed in shallow and soft ground. In this technique underground reinforced concrete elements are constructed around the proposed underground space prior to main excavation. This method is used successfully in over 50 large span underground structures in Tehran Metro stations and road tunnel intersections. CAPS has potential to be used to pre-support the large span underground spaces at any weak ground condition in an urban area.1. INTRODUCTION Underground subway stations can be constructed either by open cut-and-cover or underground construction. Due to the presence of subsurface utilities and street traffics in urban areas, underground construction is preferred to eliminate relocation of the subsurface utilities, and other urban disturbance. Underground construction in an urban area is a very challenging effort. The complexity of the work is more pronounced in a weak and shallow ground. The stress redistribution caused by underground excavation induces deformations in the earth mass and ultimately at the ground surface causing damage to adjacent structures. The need to control ground surface settlements in urban area is widely recognized and new construction methods are continuously developed. Settlements induced by underground excavation may cause serious damages to nearby structures and subsurface underground utilities, (Sekimoto et. al. 2001). In order to improve stability of underground excavation and reduce settlements, various ground treatment techniques are presented, Johnson, et.al., (1983), Carrieri, et.al. (2002), and Ocak (2008)."
