El presente texto evalúa el relave minero de SIMSA con el objetivo de obtener un producto ecológico que pueda ser utilizado como mejorador cationico de suelos y restaure el equilibrio de los suelos ácidos de la selva peruana. Para ello, se desarrolló un trabajo a nivel de laboratorio, obteniéndose resultados satisfactorios. Posteriormente se pasó al nivel piloto donde a través de la experimentación se utilizó el relave en diferentes concentraciones para la producción agrícola y forestal, reafirmando los resultados en las mejoras de la productividad en suelos ácidos.

Background- History The most significant change in mining since the late 1970?s has been the emergence of very large scale mining operations , which have been developed to ensure profitability with relatively low grade ores. These large tonnage operations have resulted in the development of larger unit sized machines in all operations of beneficiation, solid-liquid separation and dewatering. Often only a few flotation lines are installed and tonnages up to 25 ktpd and beyond are not uncommon. The increased throughputs have led to the development of circular, reactor type tank designs. The reactor cell system is the most up to date flotation cell design to utilise the principles of circular cell design. The Svedala DV mechanism was specially developed to suit the RCS machine giving good solids handling characteristics and excellent metallurgical performance. Development of UG2 ore type flotation equipment The equipment was developed and optimised by Svedala process from 1995. A higher energy specification was requested by industry. This amounted to 3kW/m3 for installed volume. Existing designs were at 1.5kW/m3. Hence various modifications were required to achieve the required power input. The first 50m3 machines were installed and developed at Impala Platinum?s UG2 circuit over a one year period. Once reliability and performance was achieved, over 300 large volume flotation cells were installed at Anglo Platinum and Lonmin operations as well. Pilot Plant Development The Impala Platinum High Energy pilot plant was commissioned in 2002 and had an installed power exceeding 5kW/m3. It was operated for over a year at the tailings dam booster station and was fundamental to the large scale scavenging plant design. All experience in overcoming mechanical and operational problems was applied in scale up design principles. A very robust mechanism was designed to accommodate the additional power input from installed motors, as well as the high SG (>1.5) of the feed source. The pilot plant flowsheet is shown in the figure below.

The manufacture of lime is one of the oldest industries. Plants are distributed widely and furnish an essential raw material for numerous industries. The use of lime by the building trades, in agriculture, and in hundreds of manufacturing and chemical processes has created demands for a large production and has necessitated exhaustive research on methods of manufacture and uses. The bibliography of lime is an extensive one, but for the most part each publication has dealt with only certain operations. The purpose of this paper is to present a general picture of the industry as a whole. The abundant literature has been abstracted and quoted freely, and the National Lime Association has rendered valuable assistance in furnishing data for certain sections. Publications containing more detailed information on the various branches of the industry are referred to in the footnotes and in the bibliography.

Tunnel excavation using tunnel boring machines (TBMs), has become increasingly common in recent years, despite the fact that precise evaluation of certain risks have not kept pace with the use of these machines. One of the risks easily overlooked by Engineer and Contractor alike are the effects of abrasive ground on the costs and schedule of a given project. The impacts of worn and damaged TBM cutter heads have been observed on hundreds of tunnel projects around the world. It would appear that a reliable prognosis of the abrasiveness of soils on a project would be of great importance for designers, clients and contractors alike. Several well acknowledged test and prognosis methods already exist for rock, however there is only very limited knowledge available to describe the abrasiveness of soil and its impact on soft ground TBMs. This paper will examine approaches to this problem and suggest a new approach based on a current project undergoing design.

Mixed fatty acids, such as oxidised paraffin soap, are frequently used as a substitute for oleic acid in flotation of scheelite in China. Not only because it is cheaper than oleic acid, but also because it is superior in flotation performance to oleic acid. This superiority is generally attributed to the mixed fatty acids' synergistic effect. In this paper, the synergistic effect of oxidised paraffin soap was investigated. We found it mainly consists of a series of saturated fatty acid salts, with six to nineteen carbon atoms. All the contained fatty acids were classified into four groups based on their chain length to make the research work practical. Also, the groups were labelled as 1, 2, 3, and 4 in order. The research was simplified into studying the synergistic effect of four equivalent collectors, instead of fourteen fatty acids. It is justified by the fact that neighbouring fatty acids are expected to have a similar flotation performance. The synergistic effect of the four groups of fatty acids was studied by single-mineral flotation with single groups, binary mixtures, ternary mixtures, and the full component, as collector respectively. The flotation performance index and synergy value were introduced to evaluate flotation performance and synergistic effect of groups, respectively. The results show that the mixture 1+2+3 has the strongest synergy of all followed by the mixtures 1+3 and 2+3. The mixture 3+4 and 1+2, on the other hand, have negative synergy. The synergistic effect of mixtures of groups indicate that being consecutive in length and a broad range of lengths are vital for fatty acids to enhance synergy. Group 3 is fundamental for the collecting action of 733 oxidised paraffin soap in the flotation of scheelite. The fatty acid soap in group 4 is not suitable for flotation due to its low solubility. "In response to the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) Request for Proposal (RFP) for "" the establishment of a Generic Mineral Technology Center (GTC) in Respirable Dust,"" the Mining and Mineral Resources Research Institutes (MRIs) at The Pennsylvania State University (PSU) and West Virginia University (WVU) in association with participating MRIs at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and the University of Minnesota (UMN) have prepared the comprehensive research program described herein. Michigan Technological University (MTU) joined the Center as an affiliate after its inception. This program was developed with recognition of the stated objective of the Federal Mine Safety and Health laws which is to "". . . permit each miner the opportunity to work underground during the period of his entire adult working life without incurring any disability from pneumoconiosis or any other occupation-related disease . . . .""Exposure to respirable contaminants in mine atmospheres has long posed a serious hazard to miners. The control of these hazards, some of which can have sudden and catastrophic consequences and some others, slow and long enduring, has been a major concern for labor, management and the government. This concern has manifested itself in four mechanisms of control -- (1) regulatory control through minimum standard setting by the passage of mine health and safety laws, (2) engineering control through design and operation of mines according to the best recommended practices, (3) interaction of dust and lung control through periodic physical examinations, wearing personal protection devices, etc., and (4) legal and social control through workman's compensation laws for occupation related health deterioration."

"Nitrogen compounds produced by cyanide destruction and/or blasting are often a cause of concern for environmental compliance and at times, for water re-use in metallurgical circuits. Natural attenuation in tailings ponds and wetlands is not always sufficient to ensure compliance and/or achievement of overall water management objectives. This paper provides a general overview of active treatment methods for nitrogen management followed by an investigation of selective adsorption combined with electro-oxidation as the potential treatment method for thiocyanate. Results from bench scale treatability study are presented. The concept of holistic assessment of nitrogen management at mine sites using Risk Adjusted Life Cycle Cost is introduced and discussed in the context of gold mining operations using sodium cyanide.INTRODUCTION Unlike metals, nitrogen compounds present in mine waters originate entirely from anthropogenic sources rather than mineral deposits. Table 1 summarizes the main sources of nitrogen compounds reporting to mine wastewater.The best management practice related to the use of ANFO involves minimizing contact between ANFO and water, control and monitoring of blasting to reduce the occurrence of misfires, and reducing the consumption of blasting reagents for a given ore body. The most common practice for the management of NaCN is the incorporation of cyanide destruction in the metallurgical flowsheet and the use of tailings impoundments and holding ponds for natural attenuation of cyanide destruction residues such as NH4-N and CNO. At most mine sites there is no active management of NO3-N and SCN in wastewater. While current practices have produced satisfactory results, new enhanced methods to manage nitrogen compounds at mines are needed due to: 1) Increased scrutiny over the adverse effects of nitrogen compounds released into the environment; 2) New effluent standards; and 3) The shift away from wet tailings towards dry stack systems resulting in diminished natural attenuation and dilution of nitrogen residues prior to effluent discharge or water re-use in mineral processing."

The underwater concrete technology has historically evolved largely through a trial-and-error process of constructing marine works. Many outstanding examples exist of high quality concrete placed underwater. However, failures also occurred and led to excessive cost and/or schedule overruns. These failures were largely due to improper concrete mix design or improper placement. The problems may have occurred because proper underwater concrete construction techniques and experience have not been widely disseminated. This section focuses on technical issues of underwater concrete mix design, concrete production and placement, and quality control.

Chairman Dilworth stated that the Committee had been appointed to take up the question and, after reading the list of members of the Committee, pointed out that the object of the meeting was to formulate a plan of action rather than to discuss any phases of valuation, per se. To this end he presented a tentative outline of points to be considered in the future by the Committee. Blasting has an important impact on mining and milling well beyond the necessary ability to dig and load the ore efficiently. There is an increasing body of blasting research indicating significant impacts in crushing and grinding. These include increased production through higher output and fewer delays for bridging and jamming by oversize. In addition, fragmentation better suited to the crushing and grinding system is indicated to lead to reduce energy consumption by these activities, an important result in today’s environment. An important component of optimum fragmentation for this purpose appears to be micro-fracturing within individual fragments. This differs from fragmentation criteria for loading which focus mostly on fragment size. Therefore, one must analyze blasting broadly to obtain satisfactory results throughout the operation.

The Coteau Properties Company's Freedom Mine is a surface lignite mining operation utilizing large draglines, trucks and shovels, tractor-scrapers, and bulldozers to uncover a single coal seam. In 1989, a work order system was instituted to record data by equipment type, cost, productivity, and distance, and to provide historical information for planning the most efficient and economic use of each equipment type in the mining operation. This report explains how the work order system was initiated, what data is tracked, and how the data is utilized for equipment and project scheduling.

Full-stream mechanised sampling apparatus, that collect a full cross-sectional increment from the complete screen discharge, will always be the preferred option for sampling screen overflows. However, the reality is that provisions for automated sampling are rarely, if ever, provided at the discharges of individual screens within beneficiation plants.Sampling from the discharge of high capacity vibrating screens, especially multi-slope screens, is subject to sampling bias, due to the stratification of the ore that occurs on the vibrating screen deck. The stratification in the vibrating bed translates to a stratified falling stream at the discharge end of the screen, typically with smaller particles at the back of the falling stream and large particles at the front of the falling stream (Figure 1).The chemical and physical characteristics of heterogeneous ore (mineral or coal) particles vary significantly with particle size. If samples do not correctly reflect the source material size distribution, they will be biased and the resulting analytical/assay data will not reflect the actual physical nor chemical characteristics of the source material.Prior published data for coal preparation research (Australian Coal Association Research Program) has demonstrated that a bias appears to exist for samples collected from high capacity multi-slope screens.A new form of sampling scoop has been developed with the aim of overcoming this issue.Bias was evaluated at a coal preparation plant by comparing the desliming screen overflow size distribution to that for æreferenceÆ coal preparation plant feed samples collected using the recognised stopped-belt technique. The study procured 20 sets of comparison samples in order to ensure statistical relevance.Two forms of sampling device were employed for the multislope screen discharge.A conventional square aperture scoop was demonstrated to exhibit a significant coarse bias, in that the resulting samples exhibited a significantly coarser size distribution compared to the reference samples. In other words it was evident that the conventional scoop æfavouredÆ material from the front of the falling stream.A new æcollapsibleÆ sample scoop was evaluated in parallel, and its samples were found to exhibit no relevant bias.CITATION:Atkinson, B W and Swanson, A R, 2012. From ancient times to the modern world, the mining industry has played a pivotal role in shaping the society that we live in today. It remains an integral part of everyday life and is a catalyst for both technological and economic growth. With finite resources on Earth, and growing pressures surrounding climate change and the environment, space mining opportunities have become of increasing interest. Recent discoveries have shown celestial bodies including the Moon and surrounding asteroids, contain an abundance of critical minerals, as well as resources necessary to sustain human life. These discoveries coupled with a transition into the digital and autonomous age, offer an innovative solution to solving some of the mining challenges currently being faced on Earth. Similarly, they also offer a pathway to enabling deep space exploration and off Earth exploratory missions. However, like with mining operations on Earth, space remains and immensely challenging and complex operational environment. The inhospitable nature of space poses new challenges, including communication barriers, lunar dust, cosmic radiation, and gravity. The challenges and risks are not just technological, as Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors must also be considered to prevent unintended consequences and hazards. Furthermore, future workforce, law, financial, and security systems must evolve to enable space mining to take place. These are all known aspects to begin with, but as the complexity of the space grows it becomes apparent that a holistic approach to assess and manage these factors will be required.

During the past five years under contract with the U. S. Bureau of Mines (BOM Contract J0308002). West Virginia University's Mining Extension Service (WVU-MES) has designed, developed) and delivered to the mining industry a comprehensive training program for Mine Rescue (MR) teams and a management planning tool for Mine Emergency Preparedness. The Mine Rescue team program is systematically built on a set of training objectives, backed up by content, allowing mine operators to conduct team training activities. These materials are user-ready, provide the MR principles and practices for both initial and advanced training, and supply teams with exercises geared to problem-solving activities. In addition to an instructor's program guide, the eight (8) modules that comprise the initial (20 hour) MR training are: an Introduction to Mine Rescue, an Introduction to Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), a set of modules covering each approved minimum 2-hour SCBA (i.e.) the Draeger BO 174-A. the McCaa) the Aerolox. & the Scott Rescue-Pak), and a manual on Auxiliary Apparatus as well as the Chemox Auxiliary SCBA. Advanced, annual refresher training (40 hour) is covered by seven (7) modules that spell-out the principles and practices needed to establish surface organization, to handle mine gases as well as mine ventilation, to conduct exploration, for fires, firefighting, and explosions, to rescue survivors and recover bodies, and to accomplish a mine recovery. Approved by MSHA in 1984 to meet requirements for 30 CFO. Part 49, these materials provide a basis for trainers' instruction, for comparison of team capabilities, for modifying programs resources, and services, and for program planning. The Mine Emergency Preparedness Program (MEPP) is used by management as a tool in the preparation of company personnel for handling a mine emergency operation. As a wholly new program. MEPP depends upon development of a Mine Emergency Organization and Emergency Operations Procedures. It also requires regular scheduling of drills) periodic mock emergencies, and evaluation of organizational responses and program performance beyond required training of mine rescue teams. MEPP materials are arranged into three sets of guides: 1) the Preparedness Program System Guides include an Executive Summary, a Program Director's Guide Mine Emergency Organization, and Emergency Operations Procedures; 2) the Emergency Organization (MEO) User's Guides cover the Rescue and Advisory Division, the Technical/Safeguarding Division, and the Surface Support Division; and 3) the Emergency Procedures (EOPS) User's Guides detail Containment Level Procedures, Notification Level Procedures. Mobilization Level Procedures, and Deployment Level Procedures.

æMining + Health in DevelopmentÆ is a project funded by the International Mining for Development Centre (IM4DC, 2012) to develop a centralised database of corporate sustainability initiatives for managing and improving occupational and public health, based on information extracted from social and environmental reports of major mining, oil and gas (MOG) companies. This register of materials has the potential to increase stakeholder awareness of the unique health risks impacting the minerals industry, employees, their families and surrounding communities, as well as to inform stakeholders on global industry approaches to health management.Data and preliminary outcomes from analysis of different MOG corporate sustainability reports on public health and disease management are presented for six African countries (Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Mozambique, Sudan, Tanzania and Zimbabwe) and six Asia-Pacific countries (Indonesia, Mongolia, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Philippines and Vietnam).With the minerals industry facing ongoing rapid growth worldwide, including continuous expansion into developing regions, the æMining+Health in DevelopmentÆ project will inform industry, civil society and regulators of current health management practices and programming among the different sectors of the minerals, oil and gas industries and across various regional operations. "Under certain conditions useful gravity information of a reconnaissance nature can be obtained with-out measuring elevations by spirit level surveys on the ground. Gravity surveys can become part of a practical exploration program where high cost and slow progress previously hindered their utility. The advantages of the new elevation procedures are realized mainly in remote areas, in areas where ground transportation is slow and difficult and on surveys where the station spacing is large in comparison with the distance of the average optimum level shot. To utilize the advantages, transportation by helicopter or light plane is usually necessary. Methods of obtaining elevation control without leveling include: barometric altimeter survey; photogram-metric -APR spot determinations; methods involving the measurement of gravity gradients. The accuracies of these methods have been tested and compared with the normal accuracy of level surveys. It is felt that each method has its place in reconnaissance gravity work, particularly in the open areas of Northern Canada."

There is no more important problem today than industrial relationship, and probably none that is receiving more thought. But in these days of Epie and Utopia, one has to be rather careful in speaking on this subject. Consequently, for fear that my plea for taking the working man into the family might be misconstrued, by some, as a step towards communism or socialism, I would like to say at the outset that I believe that, so long as we have human individualism, human ambitions, human hopes and fears, straight socialism is as far off as the Millennium. The same applies to communism, which only differs from socialism in that the communist realizes that his ideals can only be attained by massacring millions and destroying all that we hold sacred. Each still looks to Russia for inspiration and guidance, totally disregarding the Soviet swing-back to individual contract work and differential wage scales. They seem to be oblivious of the tyranny and repression in the present Russian system, and get very restless when reminded of it. In spite of the fact that the standard of living in civilized countries has improved tremendously and is still improving, we find that, every seven or eight years, production in many lines has outstripped consumption, and we have had panics or depressions of greater or less magnitude, accompanied by extensive unemployment. It is evident to every thinking person that there must be no little inefficiency in the control of industry. For four long years, governments and industrialists have striven to find the key to solve the present problem. Many countries are getting back to a position approaching normal-Canada probably more so than most. None, however, can feel assured that they have actually cured the situation. All kinds of schemes have been developed; tariff barriers have sprung up over-night where none existed before; currencies have been inflated to gain added security in the home markets and to try to gain advantage in export trade; and each country watches the movements of the others with fear and mistrust. I am not prepared to formulate a full solution of our troubles, but I hope to be able to demonstrate the feasibility and wisdom of the type of industrial relationship I advocate, and also that it may be a large, and possibly an essential, step towards the solution of our difficulties.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted explosion tests on various full-scale cementitious bulkheads used in abandoned mine areas to evaluate the ability of the bulkheads to withstand gas explosion over-pressures of 20 psig. Tests were performed on 120-ft2 solid-concrete-block seals of varying thicknesses and designs. Of the seven solid-concrete-block seals tested, only the standard-type seal, having a 16-in thickness, keyed at the floor and ribs, all joints mortared, wedged at the roof, and a center pilaster, maintained its integrity when subjected to a 20-psig pressure wave. After being subjected to repeated explosions, the standard seal only showed a small hairline crack and had an air leakage of 87 ft3/min at a pressure differential of 1 in H2O. Tests were performed on cementitious foam seals of varying thicknesses and compressive strengths. Explosion tests have shown that 200-psi strength, 4-and 8-ft-thick seals can withstand a 20-psig pressure wave. At a pressure differential of 1 in H20, no air leakage was detected through the 200-psi, 8-ft-thick foam seal.

A revolutionary development in blasting materials has occurred in recent years. Ammonium nitrate, sensitized by the addition of a small percentage of No. (class) 2 diesel fuel or other suitable petroleum product, has been adopted as a low-cost, efficient blasting agent2 in a wide variety of mining, quarrying, and heavy construction operations. Moreover, the ready availability of the component supplies throughout the Nation, together with the ease of formulating them into effective blasting agents, has made it possible for the blaster himself to prepare the mixes at the site of use. Recently, most established explosives manufacturers have begun supplying premixed AN-FO (ammonium nitrate-fuel oil) or a comparable product to various mining operations. However, many individuals and small business establishments are marketing premixed products prepared in facilities that are often poorly constructed and poorly located. Although these blasting agents have partly or wholly displaced explosives such as dynamites in many applications, there are some blasting operations in which the fuel-sensitized ammonium nitrate agents do not appear to be well adapted. As long as the hazards they present are clearly understood and respected, ammonium nitrate-based blasting agents have important safety characteristics when prepared under competent factory control or field-mixed under equivalent close control. This publication attempts to summarize the knowledge of those hazards and to incorporate practical ways to cope with them.
