Este trabalho tem por objetivo principal sintetizar e caracterizar nanopartículas de ferro de valência zero (nFVZ) para degradação de substâncias recalcitrantes, através de Processos Oxidativos Avançados. A primeira etapa consiste na sintetização nFVZ, através da reação utilizando reagentes ferrosos, com o agente redutor borohidreto de sódio, em condições controladas (pH, temperatura e velocidade de agitação do sistema). Agentes complexantes e dispersantes, como o ácido cítrico e o etilenoglicol, respectivamente, foram utilizados durante a sinterização para avaliar a variação da formação do tamanho das partículas obtidas. A caracterização foi realizada através dos ensaios de distribuição de tamanho de partículas, microscopia óptica interfacial e microscopia eletrônica de transmissão (MET). Foi observado que a concentração de ácido cítrico de 0,009 mols e o volume de 100 mL de etilenoglicol, mostraram-se como os melhores valores obtidos. Todavia o ácido se tornou um interferente na reação ao ser utilizado com o SDS. Os resultados da microscopia eletrônica de transmissão comprovam que as partículas obtidas estão na escala nanométrica.

"The history of mineral processing is indeed long and has always been tied to mining methods of the day. While many new processes and devices have been developed, the most significant trend in recent times has been the ever increasing scale of operations. There is serious doubt this ongoing trend is enough to match the global trend of falling grades and rising energy demands needed for mineral processing. As well we see that globally, the social licence to operate for mining (and hence mineral processing) is far from secure. Indeed, some argue that mining as we know it is dying and in the future, mining will be much more environmentally secure, even to the extent of insisting upon “in place” recovery and only bringing to the surface the valued product. In this paper we comment on the ramifications of broader uptake of more sustainable mining for mineral processing methods and address the specific question of whether recent progress in in place recovery will lead to a timely breakthrough. The answer proposed is that this is possible in the next 10 - 20 years but in the meantime, the focus is just as likely to be on removal of waste much earlier in circuits. Either way, mineral processing as we know it will change significantly. INTRODUCTION Mineral processing has a long history well covered in a recent publication (Habashi, 2006) who points out “the ancient Egyptians knew already that it would be easier to melt an earth rich in gold particles than another which is poor. As a result, all efforts were made to enrich the gold by washing away the light gangue minerals. Similarly, another ancient method for enriching gold particles from a river stream was by means of fleece, hence the Greek myth of the “golden fleece”. Since the middle ages, striving for improved economics has driven a string of innovative developments in milling and separation. The reader is again referred to the informative and illustrative text by Habashi."

Canada’s Quebec province operates 26 metal mines, 19 of which are producing gold and generating over C$1.8 billion (US$1.3 billion) annually. In all those mines, numerous samples of rock are collected and analysed daily in laboratories in order to determine their gold content. However, laboratory results are generally available within 48 hours of sampling (depending on the number of samples received by the laboratory and the priority of the results), thus potentially slowing down mining activities. In an attempt to find a solution for delayed laboratory results, Laval University, in partnership with the National Research Council Canada (NRC), the National Institute for Scientific Research (INRS) and four mining companies (Agnico Eagle, Canadian Malartic, Hecla Québec and Iamgold) have launched the Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) project for in situ real-time mining sample analysis. This work aims to minimise the amount of LIBS point sampling necessary to be representative of a full scan of the analysed area. Eight sampling patterns are investigated. A statistical analysis of the data was performed by varying the pattern steps. Results show that two of the patterns, 1 and 5 (single diagonal crossing the stratification of the samples with opposite slopes) minimise the amount of point sampling while remaining representative. The most successful results are obtained from steps which are greater than 6. In terms of the type of material, pattern 5 and steps 9 are better for core sampling, while pattern 1 and steps 8 are better for rock sampling. The geological explanation for these results is the heterogeneous distribution of gold in the sample which seems to be more homogeneous in the rocks than in the core sample due to the small rock size. In the post war years metals analysts and statisticians have generally tracked the demand for metals in line with changes in OECD industrial production (IP) growth rates because, undoubtedly, the correlation between IP growth and metal demand was reasonable. However the correlation was exaggerated. During times of expanding IP growth metal demand increased at a faster proportional rate than IP growth. This was probably due to industry restocking in anticipation of growing demand at the start of each economic cycle. Conversely, metal demand would slacken at a greater rate than would be suggested by negative IP growth as industry destocked in order to reduce costs. Nonetheless, overall, a reasonable correlation between IP growth, over the longer term, and metal demand could be painted. Yet, although this correlation has stood well since the last world war it has been based on the fact that the bulk of the world's IP growth stemmed from the industrialized countries of the western world, latterly including Japan. The so called "developing world" was of little consequence, whilst countries of the Soviet Union and Communist Bloc were deemed to be closed, self-contained entities which, for each metal, would either be net exporters or importers. These quantities would be used by analysts to calculate the overall supply/demand equation for the western world only and to deduce whether a commodity was in shortage or surplus. It is now believed that this method of projecting total world supply and demand for raw materials is outdated and takes little account of the worldwide political changes which have occurred since the collapse of communism and the revitalization of China, albeit under a notional communist government. It is no longer appropriate to assess global balances for raw materials on the basis of three economic blocs namely, western world, developing world and communist bloc. Rather, global balances need to be projected on a global basis. In this regard, since the collapse of communism and the removal of many other totalitarian regimes, capitalist forces are at work and are attempting to satisfy, with some considerable success, the expectations of the great mass of the world's poorer people. Such people, usually located in Asia, Africa and Latin America have aspired to the same standard of living as people living in western Europe, North America and Japan. Now, with free market forces at work their aspirations will start to be met. Consequently, the demand for metals and other raw materials will now rise at a much faster rate than at any other time in the world's history. Not only will the production of raw materials have to keep pace with rising IP in the developed world but will also have to keep pace with the demands associated with the rising expectations of rapidly increasing populations in the developing world, as well as from within the old communist bloc countries. This paper sets out to argue the case that metal demand could well increase at a rate faster than the world's mining companies, governments and financiers can deliver.

A research and testing facility has been developed at Simtars to allow the spontaneous combustion testing of coal on a large scale. In this adiabatic reactor, the coal particle sizing is closer to that which could be found in the goaf and therefore the reaction is more likely to simulate the underground situation. This allows aspects of the spontaneous combustion process and methods for detecting a heating to be investigated which cannot be done in an operational mine. Up to 18 tonnes of run of mine or crushed coal is loaded into the reactor and allowed to self-heat while the temperature and gas profiles within the coal pile are monitored. The gases evolved from the coal are analysed using a fixed gas monitor system and gas chromatography to determine which of the common mine fire indicators and ratios can be used to predict the onset and progress of coal heatings. Benchmarking of the inherent propensity of a coal to spontaneously combust at both the large- and laboratory-scale is also possible by comparing the sample against previously tested samples. It has been found that the coal particle size affects both the time it takes for the coal to react and the location of the developing heating. The heatings generate approximately one metre from the inlet but in the crushed coal case do not progress to an advanced heating stage until the æhot spotÆ migrates towards the coal surface where there is an increased oxygen supply. Physical properties such as the compressive strength of the coal also affect the heating size and the time it takes for a heating to develop. Higher strength coals appear to oxidise more slowly and therefore take longer to self-heat as oxidation of the coal is the heat-generating step in the spontaneous combustion process. The best indicators of the state of the heating were found to be CO make and GrahamÆs ratio which are independent of air flow. Investigation of a potential spontaneous combustion should begin as soon as the CO make or GrahamÆs ratio exceed the background levels. The results from the tests undertaken on a number of Queensland and NSW coals are reported here together with the implications for the mining industry.

La Espingarda kaolin deposit was formed by ?in situ? alteration of volcaniclastic rhyolitic rocks belonging to Jurassic Marifil Formation. Three volcanic lithofacies were identified: porphyric biotitic ignimbrites (PBI), a coarse lithic ignimbrite (ILG), a fluidal intrusive rhyolite (RFI), all kaolinized in different degrees. The alteration covers an ellipsoidal area of ~20,000 m2, with its alteration decreasing downwards and disappearing at 8-12 m from the surface. The length to thickness ratio of alteration is 60:1. An erratic silicification was found as small zones (<3 m2) of quartz stockwork. The mineralogy is kaolinite + quartz + feldspars + Fe-oxyhydroxides ± halloysite ± illite and interstratified I/S, although the relative proportions change in each rock type. Due to coarse grain size and high quartz content, natural kaolin is unsuitable for slip cast ceramics, unless beneficiated. Washed ILG kaolin has the best rheological properties and behavior in casting and drying for its mineralogy, particle size distribution, thin texture and surface activity, as well as a certain fusibility and firing kinetics. PBI and RFI kaolins, due to finer texture, smaller grain size, lower surface activity, and higher halloysite amount, have worse slip viscosity and thixotropy that are due also to soluble salts. For the same reason, they have good casting and drying properties, but their purity brings about higher softening temperatures and water absorption. Several parameters are used to discriminate between hypogene or supergene kaolinite genesis. The hydrothermal genesis is mainly sustained by fluid inclusion temperature (150-180ºC) in quartz veinlets, while weathering is supported by deposit morphology, simple mineralogy, kaolinite stable isotopes (d18O ? 18, 13; dD ? ?59; ?85) and paleoclimatic record. It is concluded that a weathering process formed the main alteration with some participation of steam-heated meteoric waters. Neither the contents of Au, Ag, As, Sb, Hg, nor drill data support the existence of any epithermal gold mineralization at the kaolinite bottom.

There have recently been executives at major metals companies who have recommended that Greenfield Projects not be pursued. Greenfield includes not only new geographical locations, but also new technologies and new types of feed materials. In the middle part of the 20th Century, two such projects were successfully commercialized to recover nickel from Cuban lateritic ores. One project (at Nicaro) used the Caron ammonia-ammonium carbonate leach and the other (at Moa Bay) a high pressure acid leach. How both of these projects dealt with these Greenfield issues will be reviewed, based on the original reports that described the research and development of the plants. This study will include a review of the critical ore characterization and sorting issues, as well as the extractive metallurgical, product recovery and equipment selection and sizing problems and how they were solved at each stage of project development, from laboratory through one or more pilot scale plants to start up and operation. In one case, a major revision of the plant was made after several years of operation to correct operating, equipment selection and materials of construction problems that hindered economical operation. These descriptions will provide a guide through the complicated and critical issues that in recent times have caused many companies to give up on similar development. Even with the more advanced analytical and computational tools available to today’s mineralogists, engineers and metallurgists, the basic concepts with which these projects successfully addressed their sets of problems are still required. In addition, upper management, now perhaps further removed from hands-on experience than was common then, will see how complicated problems require intense and detailed effort to avoid failure in the field and capital blowouts. Build it and we will make it run, kicking the can down the road and borrowing operating and design concepts incorrectly on technological issues, or nine year olds on a sugar high making financial decisions are not philosophies by which to succeed with Greenfield Projects.

Resources and reserves are critical inputs into the determination of an operating mineÆs financial results and balance sheets, but how well understood is this fact. Do the investors, directors, accountants and geologists/engineers responsible for preparing or relying on relevant aspects of the end results properly understand the inputs and outputs and the associated risks that may be established. The first step is to understand how financial reports are impacted. The most obvious, and best known, impact is in the calculation of depreciation and amortisation charges against long term assets. In addition, however, there is a requirement to regularly determine whether asset book values are impaired û this is nearly always performed globally by the preparation of a discounted cashflow model for a mine which is usually based on a mine life as determined from the resource and reserve statement û the particular driver here is normally the short and long term production plans. A key aspect of the short term production plan is that it would normally not assume that the reserve and resource statement implies consistent grade, stripping ratios, etc. However, outside of the early years of a plan, more generic assumptions of these variables are often made in conjunction with the reserve and resource statement. Depending on the timeframe of the detailed production plans, this can have a large impact on a projectÆs net present value. Other financial balances that may also be impacted include restoration and rehabilitation provisions, retrenchment provisions and deferred or equalisation stripping accounts. The age old question of whether all reserves should be used or whether some or all of the resources should be included for financial reporting purposes has never been adequately resolved. It is our view that there should be no prescriptive answer to this question but judgement of all professionals involved in the process needs to be included. Furthermore, the company needs to be able to support their conclusions with well thought out and appropriate answers. This may not be in line with the approach that certain accounting standard setters may be proposing or taking, and this paper will outline the current status of global requirement and the likely future directions. Whether reserves or resources are utilised, does not change the key requirement that those preparing or using reserve and resource statements need to understand key aspects. For example: geologists/engineers do they know how reserves or resources will be used? have they imparted information on variability of key drivers such as grade or depth or dilution? do they know that major financial/business altering decisions may be made based on the analysis? accountants do they understand where the numbers have been derived from and the assumptions that may have been made in their determination? do they understand the degree of accuracy (or inaccuracy) that may exist particularly with resources)? do they understand the history of resource reconciliations and what it may mean for the future? directors do they understand the processes undertaken by the company to prepare the financial report and the interaction between the geologists/engineers and accountants? do they understand the potential sensitivity of results to the input variables? Financial reporting is extremely reliant on the use of the reserves and resources, however, the geologists/engineers, accountants and directors do not always understand the interactions between themselves which may lead to misleading public reporting. More education and communication between various parties is needed.

1. The investigation shows that the Wilder (locally known as the Bon Air No. 2) is the only known bed of commercial importance in Putnam County, although at least 5 coal horizons are known. All of the coal production now reported comes from this bed, which is found In a basin with no known coal outcrops. Further drilling in the east end of the basin should disclose the location of the eastern end of the axial trough and the lateral extent of the basin in Putnam County and adjoining areas in Cumberland County. Continuity of this deposit with that in the area in Putnam County north of Monterey is not conclusively established but may exist. 2 Known (measured plus indicated) reserves of coal, based on a minimum bed thickness of 14 inches and on 1,800 tons per acre-foot in place, are estimated at 29 million tons, as of January 1, 1953. Of this total, 28 million tons are in beds 28 inches and more thick. All born coal reserves in Putnam County me under less than 400 feet of overburden.

The appraial of producing properties and profitability ntzalysis of a proposed capital expenditure are based on the same principles. In both problems a projection of future cash income is. cornpared to one or more capital expenditures. Several different methods have been in use either to compute a price to obtain a given earning power on the investment or to compute the earning power which will result from a given capital expenditure. One of these, the "Average Annual Rate of Return" method, computes in a simple manner the ratio of the present value of the future earnings after amortization to the present value of the undepreciated balances of the investment over the life of a project. This method, not well known generally, appears to have some rather unique advantages in reducing the computation work required, eliminating trial-and-error solutions, and providing a more accurate answer when applied to oil industry investments subject to the unit-of-production basis of amortization. Its derivation is given and its versatility demonstrated in the solution of certain everyday investment problems. A number of charts, useful in applying this method to profitability analysis and appraisal work, are provided. The current trend in the market values of producing properties is shown. INTRODUCTION Making sound capital expenditure decisions requires an objective means of measuring the productivity of individual investment proposals. Since the best measure of the economic worth of such proposals is their ability to produce profits, it is common practice to grade proposed capital expenditures according to their annual earning power as a percentage of the outstanding capital. The same principles which govern the determination of the rate of return of proposed capital expenditures also apply generally to the problem of determining the appraisal value or purchase price of income-producing oil and gas properties. Both problems are of prime importance in the producing phase of the oil business, where management is faced daily with decisions to drill or not to drill certain development wells, or with the determination of the appraisal value of producing properties. The common feature in both problems is that a projection of future cash income is compared with a known or estimated capital investment to determine itsiearning power or annual rate of return. In the case of development drilling, the cost of the proposed well can usually be estimated with a fair degree of accuracy and the problem consists of finding the rate of return on the invested capital. In the case of appraising producing properties, on the other hand, the desired rate of return is usually known in advance and the problem consists of determining the purchase price which, for the given income projection, results in the fequired rate of return. Certain accounting procedures common to the oil and gas producing business make these two problems and their solutions somewhat different from corresponding problems in other industries, and, in certain ways, simpler. The main difference is in the amortization policy which, for oil and gas production, is frequently on a unit-of-production basis, compared to the amortization on a time basis used in many other industries. The purpose of this paper is to discuss briefly the various methods currently in use for the measurement of productivity of invested capital in producing properties and, in more detail, the derivation and application of what will be called the "Average Annual Rate of Return Method". This rather interesting and not too well known method has some very definite advantages in the solution of many problems common to the oil industry. For the sake of simplicity, federal income tax considerations have been disregarded in the examples used, since they do not affect the principles involved. The use of the production payment route in the sale or purchase of producing properties, which has been amply covered in many other publications, has also not been included in this analysis. METHODS FOK MEASUKING THE EARNING POWER OF INVESTED CAPITAL, Of the many different methods used to measure the earning power of invested capital, four are applicable to oil or gas production ventures. Depending on whether these four methods utilize one or two interest rates, and whether a fixed amortization pattern is used, they may be classified as follows.

"The smelter slags represented silicate crystalline rock with medium to coarse-grained structure with spinifex skeletal network of olivine in hedenbergite matrix. Accessory magnetite, pyrrhotite and copper sulfides chalcopyrite, bornite, covellite, chalcocite and digenite occurred in dissemination in silicate matrix. The sample was studied by optical and electron microscopy with support of quantitative XRD. Modal mineralogical composition included olivine, pyroxene, magnetite, chalcopyrite, quartz, pyrrhotite. Copper deportment showed copper distributed in chalcopyrite (40 %), cuprite (22 %), covellite (21 %), bornite, chalcocite, digenite (5 %), Cu-bearing pyrrhotite (4 %) and spinel (2%). Liberation of copper minerals in the material ground to P80=71 µm was good with over 90 % sulfides in free grains and floatable binaries. The results showed theoretical possibility of 65 % copper recovery by flotation. Conclusion based on mineralogical data was precisely confirmed with flotation tests studies that proved to recover around 60 % of copper to commercial grade concentrate. INTRODUCTION Annual world copper matte smelter slags production is estimated to be millions of tones and contain thousands tones of unrecovered Cu, Zn and significant amounts of Ag and Au. Mineralogical study of one large processing sample of material of historical piles of Cu matte smelter slag was carried out to find possibility to recover copper and define theoretical recovery by flotation. The study of the slag material was aimed to determine possibility of upgrading the material on existing copper flotation plant to develop additional mineral resources. The objectives for mineralogical investigation were to target for best liberation fineness, determine theoretical recovery and possible concentrate quality for sulfide flotation tests. MATERIALS AND METHODS Large representative processing sample was collected by mixing of 120 t of slag material representatively excavated from historical piles of Cu matte smelter slag. The sample was used to define the processing technology to recover copper and gold from the material."

An award is a form of recognition given for superior performance in a special field of endeavor. Each year awards are given by the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association and the National Safety Council to mineral industries&apos; mines, quarries, and plants that have worked a specific number of man-hours without a lost-time injury. These awards have a dual significance in that they prove that efficiency can be attained without injury to persons. Safety awards do not result from luck or good fortune but do result from sincere desire coupled with sufficient effort and cooperation to achieve a desired goal.

The South African deep-level mining industry is characterised by high operating costs and narrowing profit margins. Compressed air is commonly the largest consumer of energy in these mines, and any inefficiencies reduce profitability. Various methods aiming to optimise the compressed air networks have been implemented without an ideal economic dispatch strategy due to the lack of compressed air storage. In this study, a genetic algorithm was developed to evaluate the financial benefit of converting underground haulage to act as an air receiver (compressed air storage). By converting inactive haulage of 1.17 km in length into a volumetric air receiver, an annual monetary benefit of R2.5 million ($163 200) can be achieved, with a payback period of fewer than eight months. However, implementing the ideal size air receiver would result in an annual monetary benefit of R7.67 million ($500 700).

Others apply to subsequent mining unit operations and can generate data for objective assessment of blasting results. These new technologies can accurately capture the information component of blasthole drilling, andindeed of each unit operation. Knowledge can be extracted from this information and passed forward and back through the mining system to improve operations and factually assess results. This leads to an evolving and improving system."

"The captive bubble and sessile drop contact angle techniques have been used to evaluate the hydrophobicity of petrographically identified coal macerals. The magnitude of the contact angle on vitrinite is shown to be a function of coal rank ( %C, %0 and % vitrinite reflectance), increasing with increasing rank to a maximum for low volatile bituminous rank coals then decreasing for anthracite. The least data scatter is found when vitrinite reflectance is used as a rank parameter. Contact angles measured or estimated for other discrete macerals, indicate a variation in hydrophobicity based on coal type. These data correlate well with known flotation results. Coal is a heterogeneous mixture of plant remains and associated minerals that have undergone chemical and physical changes by biological and geological processes. These plant remains form coal macerals, discrete organic entities in the coal which have characteristic chemical and physical properties. As the differing chemical nature of each maceral will affect its behaviour in processes such as carbonization the separation of macerals during coal preparation may provide an important asset in coal utilization.Separation of some of the macerals based on specific gravity has been achieved in the laboratory, and by Sun and Cohen , in a study of two Pennsylvania bituminous coal preparation plants. It was indicated that the lighter exinites report almost exclusively to the clean coal while the denser inertinites are concentrated in the higher gravity fractions. The Longwy-Burstlein process6 took advantage of the difference in hardness or friability of the macerals by using impact breakage followed by screening to remove the more friable vitrain,clarain and fusain. The remaining durain, often high in spore content, was then recrushed. The re-mixed fractions produced the optimum size for obtaining the best coke strength for a particular coal.Separation or concentration of rnacerals by froth flotation largely depends on differences in the hydrophobicity of the macerals. Sun and Cohen 5 . indicated an order of decreasing floatability as exinite, vitrinite and inertinite, while a Russian study (as cited by Brown 7 ) showed that vitrains floated more readily than the duller types. More recently, Hirt and Aplan8 showed that 'pseudovitrinite' floats somewhat faster than does vitrinite while fusinite floats very slowly. Olson and A plan found that vitrinite floated easily while substantial quantities of the non-floated coal contained fusinitic material. Burdon noted that vitrinite is more floatable than semifusinite, and Sarker et a/. 11 have shown that vitrinite is selectively concentrated by froth flotation and oil agglomeration. This paper addresses the challenges experienced by the designer and three government agencies during implementation of major improvements for the Turkey Creek Tunnel in Kansas City, Kansas. The tunnel serves as a vital stormwater conveyance system for upstream flood control. Major structural deficiencies were identified within the tunnel including complete loss of sidewall and invert. Without immediate attention, complete loss of the tunnel arch could lead to blockage and extensive remedial repairs under difficult conditions. Considering that tunnel flows must be maintained during construction, a phased design and construction process has been implemented to expedite stabilization of the erosion cavities followed by tunnel liner repairs.

An important aspect of the project evaluation process is the achievement of a clear and quantitative understanding of the primary drivers influencing project value and risk. A business scenario-based approach is required to ensure that the project meets value and risk hurdles over the short, medium and longer term. Adopting an optimising approach can aid significantly in the development of a project concept into a business that is optimal and sustainable in the longer term. Through the application of case studies, based on work performed with various mining organisations during the last five years, this paper will demonstrate how project value and robustness can be optimised. Experience has demonstrated that applying this approach results in significant value improvements and risk reduction û primarily by application of a rigorous, fact-based analysis and optimisation process that rapidly increases management team understanding and insight of key driver of value and risk.
