"IntroductionDuring 1994, Barrick Gold Corporation, or American Barrick at that period, acquired Lac Minerals Ltd. properties. One of them was the Bousquet Complex. The Bousquet Complex is divided into three distinct sites: one mine (Bousquet 2), one mill (Est-Malartic Division) and one analytical chemistry laboratory (Les Terrains auriferes).The Bousquet 2 orebody was discovered in 1986. An extensive drilling program was initiated during 1987. Its purpose was to define the orebody extent. At the end of 1997, gold production from Bousquet 2 mine reached 1 290 000 oz of gold from a cumulative tonnage processed of 4 175 000 M t.From 1980 to 1990, the Est-Malartic mill was used for the treatment of ore from the following mines: Bousquet 1, Doyon, Francoeur (Richmont mines), Buckshot and 1-20 stope. At present, the mill receives ore from the Bousquet 2 mine.HistoryThe Est-Malartic mill is located close to the town of Malartic in northwestern Quebec. The mill has been in production since the mid-1930s processing mainly clean, free mill gold ore. Active mining from the Est-Malartic mine ceased in 1979 and the mill was switched to custom processing of ore from La Mine Doyon located some 45 km to the west. This custom processing arrangement continued until 1987 when the expanded mill at Doyon became available to process all of the Doyon production. In 1987, Lac Minerals commenced development of a second mine at the Bousquet site located 40 km west of Malartic. This mine, Bousquet 2, is the down dip extension of the La Ronde mine developed by Agnico Eagle. During pre-feasibility evaluations, it was determined that it would be economically more attractive to modify the existing Est-Malartic mill than building a new facility on site. The Est-Malartic mill modifications for processing the high-copper/gold ore from the Bousquet 2 mine began in late 1989 and new circuits were commissioned in mid-1990. Modifications included the addition of both gravity and flotation concentration circuits to recover coarse, free gold and the copper. The existing leaching circuit continued to operate on the copper flotation tailings with some minor modifications to the solution handling systems. A S02/Air cyanide destruction circuit was also added at that time."

"The Pulp Chemistry Monitor (PCM) has been installed and operated in a number of concentrators in Australasia, and has produced some very interesting results. PCM measures the pH, Eh, dissolved oxygen, temperature and oxygen demand of process streams within a concentrator continuously and in real time.In the example presented in the paper the cleaner feed pulp chemistry is measured, and related back to changes in the mineralogy as well as variations in metallurgical response. For example, a decrease in Eh and dissolved oxygen as well as an increase in the oxygen demand. These changes in the pulp chemistry appear to coincide with increases in the feed grades, probably higher pyrite grades. Further, these variations in pulp chemistry and feed mineralogy have a negative impact on the concentrate grade and recovery.The implication is that if the pulp chemistry is monitored it is possible to predict changes in the mineralogy of the system, and from this the metallurgical response. Further, the changes in pulp chemistry can be used in a control system to counter the changes in mineralogy and maintain the metallurgy.IntroductionIt has long been recognized at a fundamental level that the flotation behaviour of sulphide minerals is dependent on the pH and Eh of the system (for example: Tolun and Kitchener, 1964; Woods, 1976). However, measuring pulp chemical parameters within an operating concentrator has had limited attention. Woodcock and Jones (1970a and b) were among the first to actually collect data from operating plants. Jones and Woodcock (1984) identified some of the chemical complexities of flotation pulps, and noted that most concentrators already operate at high levels of metallurgical performance but there was still considerable scope for improvement. These gains would, in part come from more effective chemical control. In the same volume, Healy (1984) discussed metal ion hydrolysis and precipitation, redox chemistry and how the surface chemistry of sulphide minerals can be influence flotation behaviour. The impact of grinding environment on the pulp chemistry and flotation response of a complex polymetallic sulphide ore is discussed by Forssberg and Subrahmanyam (1993). Their work essentially contrasts the pulp chemical and flotation performance of pulps ground with conventional ferrous grinding media to a fully autogenous system. The data suggested that the reduction or removal of iron hydrolysis contamination from the system could have a positive influence on flotation behaviour, and perhaps the first stage of “controlling” the chemistry of the system should be in the grinding circuit. Grano et al (1995) demonstrated that the collection of pulp, solution and surface chemical data could identify weaknesses within a concentrator, and from these data develop, test and implement solutions that improved the process. Greet et al (2006) showed that the pulp chemical trends observed through primary grinding and rougher flotation circuits of most sulphide flotation concentrators are approximately the same. There are differences in the magnitude of various pulp chemical parameters (pH, Eh, dissolved oxygen, temperature and oxygen demand) as a result of variations in the feed mineralogy and processes employed. Further, it was noted the Eh shifted to more reducing values of the ten days measurements were collected, and this change could be traced to an increase in the iron sulphide content of the feed. Metallurgically, this resulted in an increase in nickel recovery through the recovery of nickeliferous iron sulphides, and a decrease in nickel concentrate grade."

"The Rabbit Lake Operation is located in Northern Saskatchewan on the western shore of Wollaston Lake approximately 800 km north of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.The Operation is owned by a joint venture of Cameco Corporation and Uranerz Exploration and Mining Limited. Cameco is the operator.The Mill started production in June 1975 under the ownership of Gulf Minerals Canada Limited and over the past twenty years has increased the rated production capacity to over twice the original design.The Mill was originally designed to process 485,000 tonnes per year of ore with an annual production of 2.0 million kg of U308 (yellowcake). During the past ten years changes in ore sources and process modifications have led to increased milling capacity and production targets. The Mill has treated a total of 8.6 million tonnes of ore and produced over 40 million kg of U308 in the twenty year period, despite the shutdown and cutbacks in operating time since 1989.The 1995 tonnage throughput was 206,000 tonnes per year. Annual production though has risen to 3.6 million kg of yellowcake despite the departure from full-time to half-time operation in 1991 (7 up-7 down). The forecast for the coming years will see tonnage rising from 300,000 to 570,000 tonnes, production of 4.5 to 5.4 million kg of yellowcake and an anticipated return in the year 1998 to full time operation.This paper will give a brief history of the Mill and focus on the present flowsheet and recent improvements to the process."

"Lucky Strike and Menez Gwen are two hydrothermally active sites located along the border of the Azorean plateau, southwest of the Azores islands where the alteration processes affecting basaltic rocks are prominent (Costa et al., 2003). Here we report on a slabby brecciated rock, abundant at both Lucky Strike and Menez Gwen, composed mainly of basaltic fragments cemented by hydrothermal precipitates from warm fluid circulation system. Research reveals that hydrothermal alteration takes place mainly by replacement processes, in which silicification is dominant (Costa et al., 1997 and Costa, 2014).Petrographic observations, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), microprobe analysis, and mass balance studies made on basaltic fragments within the breccia show that silicification is one of the main processes resulting from hydrothermal fluid circulation. This alteration process leads to complete replacement by silica, in extreme cases, forming an impermeable cap that may contribute to the formation of sub-seafloor sulphide deposits, including examples in the geological past."

Obsolescence in the mineral world is virtually nonexistent if the term is taken to mean that a mineral commodity, once established in commerce and industry, subsequently has fallen into disuse. We are living in an age of minerals. Each generation puts an increasing array of mineral-based commodities, in larger quantities, to more uses than ever before. Bastnasite, a museum mineral and a collector's item a few years ago, is now produced in quantity at Mountain Pass, Calif. Uranium, a minor byproduct of vanadium mining in the Rocky Mountain plateau area before World War 11, has grown to be a leading mineral product in several western States. And finally the total quantity and value of minerals both in the United States and in the World establish new records almost yearly. Surely the mineral industry as a whole is not obsolescent in our economy. Nevertheless, there are particular uses for particular minerals that are obsolescent and some applications have been supplanted entirely. Tin does not occupy the prominent place in foil manufacture that it once did, and the schoolboy's slate left most classrooms before the oldest of us were born.

Lithium minerals occur predominantly in pegmatites that contain mineral assemblages derived from the crystallization of post- magmatic fluids or from the metasomatic action of residual peg- matitic fluids. They have been the traditional sources of raw material for ceramic and chemical industries. With the discovery of the Searles Lake deposits, brines became new sources of lithium, and, today, two brine deposits satisfy nearly one-half of the free world demand for lithium chemicals. Indeed, lithium production from pegmatites has been superseded by brines sources. In the United States, the brines of Clayton Valley, NV, have been exploited since 1964 by Cyprus Foote Mineral Company, a subsidiary of Cyprus Minerals Company. In Chile, Sociedad Chilena de Litio Ltda., an affiliate of Cyprus Minerals Company, is now producing lithium carbonate from the brines of the Salar de Atacama. Recently identified brine deposits suggest that these may well become the prime sources of lithium chemicals. In Bolivia, the government is negotiating the rights to exploit the brines of the Salar de Uyuni. The Salar del Hombre Muerto in Argentina is being evaluated as a future center of chemical production. The brines of the Great Salt Lake of Utah, the Smackover Formation, and the Imperial Valley geothermal field have been defined as important resources of lithium. In Tibet, high concentrations of lithium have been reported in several saline lakes. In the People's Republic of China, lithium may be produced from the brines of the Dabusan playa in the Qinghai Basin. The 1950s saw a great number of lithium companies develop. However, following the termination of the Atomic Energy Commission purchase program in 1959, several companies, such as Maywood Chemical Co., American Lithium Chemicals, and Quebec Lithium Corp., were forced to close their operations. Nevertheless, with the development of new applications in glass ceramics, air conditioning systems, synthetic rubber, and metallurgy (aluminumpotlines), the lithium industry grew steadily. With the potential application of lithium metal in batteries, nuclear reactors, and fuel cells, a steady growth can be foreseen. New products and new applications are likely to stimulate exploration for expanded reserves as well as the search for new sources from which lithium could be extracted economically. Presently identified reserves and production capacity are sufficient to satisfy the conventional market growth of lithium.

The Fe(II) regeneration process is an important aspect of Alternate Anode Reaction Technology (AART) for copper electrowinning (EW). In AART, Fe(II) is oxidized to Fe(III) at the anode during EW, and it must be regenerated to maintain recyclable electrolytes. Regeneration is achieved via Fe(III) reduction by SO2(aq), and the reaction is catalyzed by activated carbon particles. To better understand this process, a kinetic model was developed and experimentally validated for the Fe(II) regeneration in the current work. The investigation focused on the primary reaction mechanism and the reaction rate dependence on four variables: carbon particle size, flow rate, initial Fe(III) concentration and initial SO2 concentration. The Fe(II) regeneration reaction is mass-transfer controlled in the presence of activated carbon. Carbon particle size and initial Fe(III) are the most influential factors under the conditions tested. Initial SO2 concentration is insignificant to the reaction rate.

In the past two years recent increases in silver prices over levels that prevailed for many years have changed supply/demand patterns. On the supply side, a silver mining boom is in progress in the United States and elsewhere. On the demand side, traditional uses of silver by individuals are dropping while industry is conserving. These changes will alter the supply/demand balance and bring about more moderate rises in silver prices, which in turn will impact the mining industry.

Due to the reduction in frictional resistance, the characteristics of joint infill have a major role to play on rock mass instability. This paper elucidates the laboratory behaviour of graphite infilled joints based on a large-scale shear apparatus under constant normal stiffness (CNS). Discontinuities in a graphite mine have been simulated using high strength gypsum plaster, with the joints infilled with compressed graphite layers. The Fourier series was employed to characterize the joint surface, and the method of using the Fourier coefficients for the prediction of dilation and normal stress with displacement is explained. Die Charateristik von Verbindungsfüllungen hat einen wichtigen Einfluss auf Felsmassenstabilität aufgrund der Verringerung des Reibwiderstandes. Diese Veröffentlichung untersucht das Verhalten von Graphit gefüllten Verbindungen im Labormaßstab mit einer Methode die auf einem gross-umfang Apparateprinzip unter konstanter Normal-Steifheit beruht. Unregelmässigkeiten in einer Graphit Mine wurden mit Gypsum Gips von hoher Festigkeit simuliert, die Verbindungen wurden mit kompressierten Graphitschichten gefüllt. Fourier Reihen wurden angewandt um die Verbindungs Fläche zu Characterisieren. Die Methode die verwendet wurde um die Ausdehnung und Normalkraft mit der Verschiebung mit Hilfe von Fourierkoeffizienten zu bestimmen wird beschrieben. Due à diminution des résistances par frottements, les caractéristiques des joints de remplissage joue un rôle majeur sur les instabilités de la roche. Cet article étudie le comportement en laboratoire des joints de remplissage en graphite à partir d’un dispositif de friction à grande échelle sous rigidité normale constante. Les discontinuités dans une mine de graphite ont été simulées grâce à un plâtre à haute teneur en gypse, dont les joints ont été remplis de couches de graphite compressées. La caractérisation de la surface des joints a été réalisée avec les séries de Fourier. La méthode utilisant le coefficient de Fourrier pour la prédiction de la dilatation et de la compression en fonction du déplacement est également expliquée.

From March to May of 1963, the Bureau of Mineral Resources carried out an experimental aeromagnetic survey at Cobar, New South Wales, to field test a proton-precession magnetometer installation in the Cessna aircraft VH-GEO. The Cobar area was chosen as considerable information was already held on the Earth's magnetic field there, which was known to provide a range of anomalous areas that are not excessively disturbed.A procedure for survey flying and methods for processing data were developed during the survey. Contour maps of the aeromagnetic results were produced in the field. The experimental survey was successful in outlining magnetic anomalies in detail.INTRODUCTIONSince 1951 the Bureau of Mineral Resources, Geology and Geophysics (B.M.R.) has carried out an airborne magnetometer exploration programme with DC.3 aircraft carrying fluxgate magnetometer equipment. Recently a proton-precession magnetometer was developed by the Design and Development Group of the B.M.R. for observatory use. One unit modified for airborne use was installed in the Cessna light aircraft, VH-GEO. The Cessna was modified structurally to take the magnetometer, associated bird, and winch gear.The proton-precession magnetometer has many good features.1. "INTRODUCTION The Federal Explosives Act (55 Stat., 863), as amended, was passed by Congress on December 26, 1941, and became effective immediately; it amended the Act of October 6, 1917 (4o Stat., 385). The purpose of the Act was to regulate the manufacture, storage, use, and possession of explosives in order to prevent sabotage and to assure that explosives and ingredients would not fall into unauthorized hands. Under the provisions of the Act, the Director of the Bureau of Mines was authorized to administer its provisions under the supervisions of the Secretary of the Interior.EXPLOSIVES-CONTROL DIVISIONTo administer the Act, necessary personnel were employed in accordance with the appropriation made from a special presidential fund and later by Congress, and the Explosives Control Division was organized as a part of the Health and Safety Branch of the Bureau of Mines constituting the fourth division of that branch. A central office was established in Washington, D. C., and field offices were designated largely at the offices of the Health and Safety Branch throughout the country, and 50 explosives investigators were employed and assigned to work from these offices under the direction of the district engineers of the eight districts into which the United States is divided by the Health and Safety Branch. The territory assigned to each investigator was based on the approximate amount of explosives stored in that area; however, smaller territories were assigned to investigators stationed near the Pacific coast, which was indicated as critical by the armed forces."

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc (Hons) (Eng) (Mechanical) degree Discrete element methods (DEM) are being used to provide detailed impact histories of the particles in comminution devices, such as mills. To match this immense detail of information, far more informative breakage tests than those that are generally conducted are now required. The split Hopkinson pressure bar apparatus is used in this study, as it allows the calculation of breakage forces and absorbed energies. The geometry of rock particles has been identified as significant, so this project undertook to identify the influence of shape on the breakage pattern of blue stone. Comparisons are then made between the breakage pattern of angular rocks and rounded, milled rocks for single impact fracture and consecutive impact loading at low energy. Results of this experiment indicate that although breakage for both geometries occurs over a similar energy range, rounded particles have the greater probability of fracture because they absorb more of the impact energy for a given loading. Size distributions of progeny show that five pebbles or more are sufficient to predict the distribution of most particles in small energy regimes. Cumulative impact testing shows that considerably more energy is required to break a rock through cumulative damage than through a single impact?this is of considerable importance in the light of the indications from DEM simulations that most breakage in a mill will be from cumulative damage rather than single impact breakage.

As most mining companies are taking advantage of the high market prices for base metals such as steel, copper and zinc, numerous challenges still face them. While demand is strong from countries like China and the United States, demand is still mixed in Europe. This leads to the question of how long these high prices and overall high global demand will last. The tremendous market prices of most precious and base metals have enabled many companies to pay down a significant amount of debt accrued during acquisition and capital expenditure phases. Additionally, mining companies have been able to internally fund and engage in large projects to address future growth, (Less, 2006), thus maximizing the performance of the existing asset base, driving maintenance costs down, and improving and empowering the work-force (Mining Journal, 2006). Market prices and general efficiency gains have addressed these issues to some extent. However, critical issues still face operating managers in the mineral pro-cessing side of the industry. Energy prices, for example, continue to have a negative impact on cash costs for producing an ounce of gold or ton of a given base metal (Cummins, 2003).

"This paper presents the results of an industrial test using 8 t/d of Baotou concentrate (50% REO) of a clean metallurgical process, which includes: 1. Roasting with H2SO4 at low temperature (220~260 0C) in a batch roasting furnace followed by water leaching to obtain a leach liquor as feed with a yield of >95% RE and Th, recovering F as fluoride, producing a leach residue amounting to 1/3 of an equivalent high temperature residue and containing <0.03% Th and radioactivity < 3×104 Bq/kg compared to the normal high temperature residue containing 0.2-0.3% Th and 1×105 Bq/kg. 2. Separating Th with N1923 and extracting RE by P507 has been completed in mixer-settlers. Test results indicate that the ThO2 product has a purity of > 95% with a yield of 99%, and the RE has a yield of >95%, in which ThO2/REO <5×10-6, and that P507 loaded RE connect straight with separating RE using P507-HCl system. 3. Treatment and multipurpose use of "three wastes" (water, gas and solids) are discussed in some detail."

Coal refuse slurries stored in tailings impoundments can potentially lead to environmental concerns such as effluent seepage, property devaluation, and in extreme cases, dam failures. Pressure filtration offers an opportunity to reduce the impoundment requirements by providing significantly drier solids. A full-factorial design was used to study the effects of temperature and pH on dewatering a refuse slurry obtained from a coal preparation facility in Pennsylvania, USA. The experimental results indicated a strong effect of temperature on cake moisture as the cake moisture after about 2800 s was 22% at 43 °C and only 36% at 10 °C for tests conducted at pH 3. ANOVA results confirmed the statistical significance of pH, temperature, and their interaction effect. Also, the results showed no significant differences between the tests conducted near neutral and alkaline pH values at low and ambient temperatures. On the other hand, Tukey's test indicated higher reductions in cake moisture at higher temperatures for lower pH values. This study affirms the need to monitor and control the pressure filtration process as throughput could significantly vary with changes in temperature and slurry conditions.

During the year 1940 a complete investigation was made of the whole of the stoping operations throughout the Great Boulder Mine and, as a result, it was decided to convert some of the existing shrinkage stopes into cut-and-fill stopes, and also to mine many of the more recently developed ore blocks by the latter method. The necessity for filling was due primarily to the structure of the ore blocks, the character of the walls and possible excessive dilution, but was influenced also by the grade of the ore-block and by the fact that cleaner mining can be carried out by cut-and-fill stoping.The comparatively few cut-and-fill stopes in operation prior to 1940 had been filled mainly with waste rock from development work, but as the amount of this material available, or likely to become available, would have been wholly inadequate for future operations, it was proposed to construct a system of passes to supply filling material from the surface.Owing to the distribution of the stopes, no central pass or system of passes could be devised which would service all the stopes satisfactorily.However, work was commenced on two passes, one designed to service the cut-and-fill stopes in the Eastern Section of the mine, and another to service those in the Western Section. It was realised that these passes could serve only a small proportion of the total number of Stopes (Figs. 1 and 2). During the progress of this work experiments were undertaken to test the possibility of using filtered tailings underground as an adjunct to the above scheme, but for various reasons these were only partially completed.Early in 1942 it was suggested by the Mill Superintendent that an attempt be made to fill with wet classified flotation tailings as practised at Mt. Lyell in Tasmania and at the Triton Mine at Reedy, West Australia. For the purpose of testing this, an experimental stope was prepared on the 309-ft. level, &quot;X&quot; Lode. This was 100 feet long and averaged 4 feet in width. Water-tight rearings were built at each end of the stope and waste rock fill was spread to a height of 6 to 8 feet above the timber. Used filter cloths were laid on top of the fill and brought a few feet, up the walls of the stope. A two-inch victaulic drainage line was then placed in position, the end passing through a hole in one of the bearings and thence to a sump. In the central portion of the stope two vertical pipes were brought up from this line. Elandsrand started shotcreting back in 1991. This paper will share the experiences of the mine by looking into the past, the present situation and the way Elandsrand plans to approach the future. It looks at the application of drycrete and discusses the factors that led to the introduction of wet fibre reinforced shotcrete. The logistical constraints of getting shotcrete material underground will be solved by the development of an underground batch plant, using run of mine waste rock as an aggregate.

Variations in water percolation rates through saturated cohesionless hydraulic backfill (mill tailings) have been studied in relation to the many physical aspects of the system to determine the most important factors in causing these variations. A multivariable least-squares regression analysis of 135 separate tests shows that a reliable estimate of the water percolation rate through typical hydraulic backfill can be made if the bulk density (unit weight), specific gravity, and grain-size distribution are known or can be estimated. Equations for predicting percolation rate, coefficient of permeability, and seepage velocity are developed both for the range of data analyzed and for extrapolation. The prediction equations for use within the range of data studied are quite accurate, while the ones developed for extrapolation are less accurate but still give reasonable approximations of flow rates. The equations given are valid for cohesionless materials that are free of clays and micas, exemplified by classified mill tailings. The prediction equation for percolation rate is rather complicated, so for practical use a nomograph that simplifies the solution of the prediction equation was developed.
