This report on the properties of aviation gasolines and aviation jet fuels produced in the United States during 1954 was made under a co-operative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. Analytical data are presented for 101 samples of aviation gasoline. Data also are given for 30 samples of aviation jet fuel. The analyses were made on samples typical of the manufacturers I 1954 production in their laboratories and the results submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. The products of 19 manufacturers of aviation gasolines and of 15 producers of aviation jet fuels are represented.

"The Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail (LRT) Project is part of an $8.4 billion investment to expand transit in the Toronto, Canada area and is the largest transit project initiated in Province’s history. Settlement control and impact to over 1400 adjacent structures due to tunnelling was identified early as a critical project risk. The ground conditions along the 10km tunnel alignment consist of water bearing soft ground deposits (clays, sands, silts) which required careful analysis and control during design and construction. This paper will describe the process used to analyze settlements along the numerous of adjacent structures and evaluate achieved settlement results to those used during design. The paper will demonstrate that with the appropriate design specifications, selection of modernized EPB machines, and contractor performance, settlement can be maintained well below typical industry (volume loss) standards, expanding the application and suitability of soft ground tunnelling in sensitive settlement areas. INTRODUCTION The Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail Transit (LRT) Project is part of an $8.4 billion (2010$ CND) investment from the Ontario provincial government to expand transit in the Toronto, Canada area. The project is being developed by Metrolinx, an agency of the Government of Ontario to provide 19 kilometers of dedicated LRT service connecting the City of Toronto from the west to east along Eglinton Avenue. Upon completion in the year 2020, the Crosstown will be the first LRT constructed in Toronto. It will link regional and local transit, cut travel time along the route by half and provide over a thousand jobs during construction."

Growing Greener is the single largest investment of state funds in Pennsylvania’s history, allocated to address the Commonwealth’s critical environmental concerns. Signed into law by Governor Tom Ridge on December 15, 1999, Growing Greener will enable the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to appropriate nearly $240 million over five years, to watershed restoration and protection, abandoned mine reclamation, and oil and gas well plugging projects. DEP has utilized these allocations in some remarkably innovative ways, as it: involves the cooperation of several state agencies, local governments, and grassroots organizations to address environmental concerns of the Commonwealth, provides funds directly to watershed groups based on locally determined decisions for local watersheds and offers a user friendly process. In three years, over $130 million in watershed restoration and improvement projects have been initiated.

Introduction The fiftieth anniversary is, for an individual or a society, an appropriate time for a review of the past so that events and experiences may be viewed m perspective, and thereby serve as a useful guide to the future. In this review of mining geology it is proposed to set forth the situation as it was when the Institute was founded, and then trace the developments during three appropriate periods-the first from 1898 to 1918 the second from 1919 to 1939 and the third from 1939 to 1948. Mining activities were widespread in Canada in 1898 and some of the operations were considered large for their day. The total value of the metals produced in that year was $21,705,854, and in the case of five metals the output had a value in excess of one million dollars. In order of importance these were gold, silver, copper, nickel, and lead. The important producing areas were ova Scotia, Quebec, Ontario British Columbia, and Yukon. This diversification of the mining areas and the metals produced created an interest in mining throughout Canada, and was an important factor in making Canadians conscious of their mining industry. In the year 1898 geology was a recognized science. The principles of physical geology were well known, but the same cannot be said of economic geology and structural geology. Ore deposits and their occurrence had been studied chiefly in Europe. A great many important observations had been made but the theories linking these facts together were still m a formative stage. The same condition was true of structural geology. These two branches of geological science which are so important in what is now called 'mining geology', had not progressed far enough to be of practical assistance mining operations. For this reason, geologists were regarded as dreamers in ivory towers-a concept chat still lingers in the minds of those who have not kept abreast of the growth of the science.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report addresses issues involved in using a limited number of training apparatus to give hands-on self-contained self-rescuer (SCSR) training to a succession of miners, and provides guidance regarding methods for minimizing the spread of infectious diseases. Procedures used for preventing the spread of infectious organisms in dentistry, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training, and scuba training are examined. The sanitizing methods of three organizations that require individuals to insert the mouthpiece as part of the SCSR donning sequence are discussed. It was found that each of these organizations was able to render their mouthpiece assemblies microbe free simply and inexpensively.

The DC Clean Rivers Project is DC Water's ongoing program to capture and treat combined sewer overflows (CSOs) during rainfall before they reach the District waterways. The Anacostia River system was designed to reduce CSOs into the Anacostia River and includes the Blue Plains Tunnel, Anacostia River Tunnel, First Street Tunnel, and Northeast Boundary Tunnel. A portion of the Anacostia River system was commissioned in March 2018 and the final component, the Northeast Boundary Tunnel, was placed in operation on September 15, 2023. This paper provides a summary of the experience gained during construction of this +$2.9 billion project, an overview of the system performance since its activation in 2018, and a look-ahead to the next phase of the DC Clean Rivers program: the Potomac River Tunnel.

"This study aims to discuss personal and behavioral parameters contributing to heat-related accidents. To study the prevention approaches, it is essential to look at the various factors at the individual, management, and industrial levels. Qualitative risk analysis methods are used based on the public data in the USA to find the impact of the environmental and behavioral parameters on the heat stress and heat strain of mine workers. The effects of individual factors such as worker experience, age, fitness, lifestyle, acclimation, and more are illustrated. The significance of factors such as the roles of the mine management and regulatory agencies are addressed.INTRODUCTIONOccupational hazards in mining industry endanger the health and safety of the workers and productivity loss for mining companies. Among those hazards is the exposure to excessive heat that has adverse effects on the health of mine workers. The intensity of heat load is a significant factor in fatal and non-fatal heat-related accidents. Severe environmental conditions combined with a high level of activity in the mining industry increases the vulnerability of individuals to health and safety hazards (Ngwenya, Oosthuizen, Cross, Frimpong, & Chaibva, 2018). Lack of regulations and legislation addressing the heat issue in the mining industry (i.e., underground and open pit mines, processing plants) also raises widespread concerns.Along the climate change, various sources contribute to the overall heat load at a mine site (Hanna, Kjellstrom, Bennett, & Dear, 2011; Kjellstrom, Lemke, Hyatt, & Otto, 2014). In underground mines, the majority of heat comes from different sources such as geothermal gradient, equipment, auto compression, groundwater, and blasting (Maurya, Karena, Vardhan, Aruna, & Raj, 2015). On the surface, however, the majority of heat load can be sourced to solar energy. The exposure to excessive heat might result in heat-related illnesses, fatigue and fainting, loss of concentration, performance reduction, and production loss (Kocsis & Sunkpal, 2017; Roghanchi, 2017). The severity of the effects depends on duration and level of exposure and the response of an individual to heat stress. The response of an individual is influenced by different factors including age, gender, fitness, lifestyle, experiences, and past medical history."

Fly ash is a by-product produced from the combustion of most hels including municipal solid waste. Currently, most combustion residuals are disposed of in landfills at a continually increasing cost and with questionable impact on the environment. Due to the presence of heavy metal compounds, municipal waste combustor (MWC) fly ash has the potential to leach these metals (e.g., lead and cadmium) above regulatory limits. The heterogeneous nature of MWC fly ash makes detailed characterization difficult. This research focuses on the identification of lead compounds in MWC fly ash. Samples obtained from the Olmsted Waste-to-Energy Facility in Rochester, Minnesota were examined in this study. The fly ash was fractionated into six size ranges and prepared as geological thin sections for analysis. The worked discussed in this paper involves using an electron microprobe analyzer to determine phase composition in MWC fly ash. In addition, backscattered electron imaging, digital image processing, and mineral liberation analysis software were used to determine phase distributions and phase associations as a function of particle size. Several lead containing compounds in several forms are identified. The results of this study show that lead can be identified in small sectioned particles which would not be apparent using normal backscattered electron imaging.

While this conference is dedicated to the examination of "Challenges in Mineral Processing," the broader aspect of the pursuit of this subject is Research and Development in the Mining Industry. When I was asked to speak at this symposium, I hesitated to accept. While my early schooling, training and professional occupation were in the field of this symposium, it was so long ago that I no longer feel competent to contribute anything of interest to you except perhaps for a limited historical perspective, which most of you probably already know. However, it might be worthwhile to explore the more general aspect of research and development from the viewpoint of management, as this is the stance from which I dealt with the subject for the last 30 years or so. While most managements generally have a positive view of research and development, few of the leaders in the mineral industry have actually had the personal experience of doing research for a long enough time to have obtained a full understanding and the feel for its place in the long-term technological innovation that our industry must foster. I graduated from the University of California in Berkeley with a Bachelor of Science degree and a major in metallurgy. It was during the great depression of the thirties, and it was difficult to obtain a practical job in the industry. I got a scholarship at the Montana School of Mines and received a Master of Science degree in ore dressing under Professor A. M. Gaudin, followed by another year with him pursuing research. Anyone who studied under him, or knew him well, would assert that this was a unique experience. Gaudin had a brilliant mind and a profound respect for science and the scientific method. The wastes of the plating industry are generated in the process of rinsing the plated objects and during the cleaning of the plating shops. High volumes of hazardous waters are neutralized on site producing recyclable water, generating a metal rich, hazardous, filter cake. Occasionally, a complete plating bath has to be discarded which increases the metal content of the filter cakes. These filter cakes are discarded as hazardous at a cost of over $ 250 per ton. The metals found in the cakes are generally copper, nickel and chromium or zinc, lead and cadmium, assaying from 2% to 15% or even higher content of each metal The metals and their contents are highly variable. Some plating shops discard their products directly to hazardous waste sites, others, have them collected by companies which consolidate wastes from several producers prior to discarding. These wastes, richer in metal content than mine ores, need neither mining nor crushing and grinding for concentration. The commonly found impurities in the mine ores, i.e.: pyrites, arsenic, and valuable metals which are present in minute quantities, are absent in the filter cakes. The processes available to selectively recover the metals from the filter cakes, are discussed based on their technical and economic merits. The flow-sheets include leaching, solvent extraction when required, and electrolytic refining. Examples, showing the separation of copper, nickel and chromium and also of zinc and lead in pilot plants, show the technical and economic viability of the processes.

The development of the mineral industry of Jamaica has been guided by an unwritten policy which has nevertheless been reflected in various pieces of mining legislation and by case-by-case approvals of incentive packages for non-bauxite minerals. An effort has now been made to bring together in one minerals policy document, all the policy elements that have guided our laws and actions thus far and to upgrade the final version to meet the challenges of the next century. In this regard, industrial minerals will be placed on a more equal footing with bauxite, especially in terms of investment incentives.

The purpose of this paper is to quantify the risk to both the environment and surrounding infrastructure from a pipe sealing implosion. Both accuracy and the precision in determining how a submerged infrastructure damaged by underwater explosions performs provide better decision-making capabilities for managers facing impending oil spills. This determination is vital, especially for both emergency and crisis management teams, as categorized consequences based on both the nature of the structural layout and the surrounding marine environment assist in identifying whether or not the utilization of this technique is applicable. Thus, the decision maker’s aim, in a crisis, is to minimize any associated risk that might result in aggravating the situation by endangering both the infrastructure and marine life. Therefore, the resulting risk matrices will enable technical personnel who are not experts in explosive technologies to be armed with the information necessary to determine if this mitigation technique is applicable to their situation.

Disruption in critical minerals supply chains has resulted in the evaluation of various types of mineral deposits for critical minerals potential. Much of the study on critical minerals focuses on occurrence and characterization, but little research has addressed what concentrations of critical minerals in a mineral deposit are required to make an exploration target into an operating mine. Understanding the cut-off grades of ore deposits being actively mined is one criterion to determine if concentrations in an exploration target are high enough. Cut-off grade is defined as the minimum amount of mineral contained in a ton of ore that is sent to the processing plant. Among many factors, cut-off grade depends upon the size and type of the deposit and mining operation, the processing technique, and market prices. This research does not aim to define cut-offs for determining if a mineral deposit is economic. Rather, it defines estimates of concentrations of critical minerals that could be considered good enough for further exploration. For example, ~2% total rare earth oxide (TREO) is the cut-off grade for Mt. Pass carbonatite, but 500 ppm TREO could be an exploration target for coals.

EPA's Office of Solid Waste (OSW) is developing a program, under Subtitle D of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) to regulate the management of non-coal mining wastes. In May 1988. OSW produced a "Strawman", which is a working document that is precursor to a proposed rule. OSW has been working closely with environmental groups, industry, and States to solicit comments and feedback on the mining waste program. OSW currently plans to release a second "Strawman" in early 1990. A proposed rule is tentatively scheduled to be published in the spring of 1991.

"The move to LRFD methods for structural design by AASHTO, ACI, AISC , ASCE, and the FHWA has been a major change for the American construction industry. The deep foundations industry has arguably been placed most at risk by this situation, because of the need for, and the difficulty of providing, reliable quality assurance.LRFD is attractive for both the owner and the engineer because it promises cost reductions, but the assumption underlying LRFD is often overlooked - that the acceptable margin of safety can be rationally reduced, thus saving costs, provided that all the factors involved are closely controlled. This means that both the quality of the materials and the quality of the construction work must be closely monitored, and held to an acceptable standard.This paper describes the type of comprehensive quality management program that is needed in deep foundation construction projects based on LRFD. Case histories are used to illustrate the importance of both adequate inspection and reliable testing to a comprehensive quality management program.IntroductionOver the last thirty years, the major organizations that set standards and practice policies for the American construction industry, such as the American Association of State Highway and Transportation officials (AASHTO), the American Concrete Institute (ACI) , The American Institute for Steel Construction (AISC), the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), have embraced Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) as an alternative to, and in some cases, a complete replacement for, Allowable Stress Design (ASD). AASHTO first published a new set of LRFD-based design guidelines for bridges in 1996, with several revisions in 1997, 1998, and 1999 (AASHTO, 1996). The 1996 AASHTO Bridge Design Code was the first in the United States that required foundations to be designed using LRFD procedures. LRFD has a clear advantage over conventional ASD where variability in material strength, bias in design methodology, and degree of construction quality can be rationally accounted for to achieve an acceptable level of risk."

A rocket parachute signal flare is often used to signal a maritime emergency. In the general operation of these devices, a solid rocket motor propels a metal body to an altitude of approximately 1000 ft (305 m). At the end of the rocket motor, a propelling charge drives a signal flare and parachute out of the metal body and ignites the flare, which then burns for approximately 40 seconds as it falls to earth. In underground metal/nonmetal mines, repeated localized short-term exposure to high levels of airborne contaminants can become a serious health issue. Currently, there are no common mechanisms to control or mitigate these short-term high exposures to contaminants. To improve miners’ health and safety, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) is developing a smart monitoring and control (SMAC) system for the real-time monitoring of mine air quality, with integrated countermeasures to reduce high concentrations of airborne contaminants in localized sections of mines. To develop and test a SMAC system capable of being implemented in an underground mine, SMRD researchers built a test apparatus incorporating a fan, louver, ducting and sensors combined with atmospheric monitoring and control software. This system will institute effective countermeasures to reduce contaminant levels, improving miner safety and health.

The management of solid waste is known to be a large and increasing problem in high-population areas throughout the world. It is not necessary here to add further definition to the nature and magnitude of the problem. Instead, it is the purpose of this paper to describe a new process, called the Andco-Torrax System, which will be of use in converting municipal solid waste into useful energy forms and a granulated slag by-product. The paper includes a description of the first commercial plant for the process.

Recycling of materials from lithium-oxyhalide batteries is a complex task, since the dismantling of batteries is associated with many hazards. The electrolyte and the lithium anode metal are extremely reactive in the presence of water or water vapor. Therefore, the dismantling process is a complex task. In this process, the lithium battery is electrically discharged, then frozen in liquid argon, and cut into small size pieces. These are fed into an incinerator, where the unreacted portion of lithium metal, thionyl chloride, plastic separators and carbon paste are decomposed and burned to gaseous products. The aluminum, iron (steel) and nickel pieces are recovered as saleable scrap metals. The off-gases are scrubbed with an alkaline sodium carbonate containing solution. The clean gases are released to the environment. The particulate mater recovered from the scrub-suspension would be available as additive to the cement industry . The recycling of battery decomposition products improves the economic viability of the disposal processes. Work is in progress to develop safe handling, processing and recycling large size lithium batteries.
