The alternating direction explicit procedure (ADEP) makes use of the boundary conditions to reduce multi-dimensional problems to a series of one-dimensional problems. The method, previously applied to reservoirs containing only an under-saturated oil, has now been extended to cover the case of natural gas reservoirs. l his involves solving a non-linear partial differential equation, application of the procedure is straightforward and no calcuIational problems were encountered. INTRODUCTION There has been a growing interest in formulating mathematical models of petroleum and natural gas reservoirs — models which permit the engineer to examine and evaluate the physical and economic consequences of various alternative production policies. The tremendous reduction in the cost of solving such models in recent years has made possible their use as an almost routine management tool. This reduction is the result not only of improved computer hardware but also of the development of more efficient mathematical techniques. The present paper is concerned with the application of a recently proposed numerical method (ADEP) to two-dimensional gas reservoirs. Vermiculites are secondary minerals formed by the: alteration of biotite and philogopite mica and are associated with basic rocks such as dunites, serpentines, and pyroxenites. Vermiculite was first described by T. H. Webb in 1824. It remained a mineralogical curiosity until 1913, when the first commercial deposit was discovered in the Turrett mining district of Colorado. Expanded or exfoliated vermiculite was first marketed in 1915 from a deposit in this district 5 miles southeast of Hecla, Colo. This activity was brief, but successful and continuous commercial development began in 1921 in Montana. Four massive pillar collapses in limestone mines, and one in a marble mine, occurred between 2011 and 2021 in benched areas at the Appalachian physiographic province. We characterized the rock mass at 43 limestone mines using the Geological Strength Index and, by plotting the results on a physiographic relief map, determined that GSI values between 55 and 70 preferentially occur in the Appalachian and Ouachita Mountains, which were subject to deformation during the Ouachita and Alleghanian Orogenies. Limestone mines located in formations of similar age in the Interior Plains, where deformation was less developed, are characterized by Geological Strength Index values over 80. We present the results of pillar strength calculations that incorporate the Geological Strength Index from mines that experienced massive collapse, as well as from mines with benched areas that did not collapse, to demonstrate the negative effect that a jointed rock mass has on pillar stability. We suggest that pillar designs, particularly those in which benching will be incorporated, should include allowance for rock mass quality. Because of the preferential dominance of lower GSI values in the Appalachians, we further suggest that pillar designs in this environment may require additional engineering assessment, especially where benching is intended. Lower GSI values may often translate into greater overbreak, which results in loss of pillar volume, corresponding wider back spans, and a decreased width-to-height ratio.

The leaching of a complex matte in chlorine and chloride media was studied. The matte was prepared from manganese nodules by the reduction smelting-sulfidation route. From XRD analysis, the major phases of the matte were identified as CuFeS2, CuS2, (FeNi)9S8, (FeNi)S2, Ni9S8, Ni3S2, (CoFeNi)9S8 and Co metal. Investigated were the chlorine, hydrochloric acid, hydrochloric acid-oxygen, ferric chloride, ferric chloride-oxygen, cupric chloride and cupric chloride-oxygen systems. The results are discussed in terms of reagent concentration, retention time, leach temperature and gas sparging rate. The chlorination process resulted >99% metal extraction efficiency within a short retention time and at atmospheric temperature. However, there were no preferential extractions of Cu, Ni and Co with respect to Fe. The cupric chloride-oxygen system produced leach liquors with the lowest Fe content and with a high base-metal extraction. Sulfide sulfur was converted to mixtures of elemental sulfur and sulfate in all the studied systems.

While nickel mattes and very small quantities of copper matte had been commercially granulated for years, no large scale copper matte granulation system had been built. This paper summarizes the history and benefits of copper matte granulation, the Kennecott design basis, the successful operation for over 10 years and potential problems inherent in some matte granulation approaches.

Owing to decreasing high-grade ore reserves, there is a need for better understanding of the jigging process to improve the recovery efficiency of finer, lower grade material. The use of positron emission particle tracking (PEPT) was examined as a technique to study the motion of iron ore particles inside a laboratory batch jig. PEPT is a non-invasive method that can provide three-dimensional kinetic data on a particle in laboratory-scale processing units and has been successfully used to study mills, hydrocyclones, and flotation. Experiments were conducted to determine whether PEPT would be a viable technique to study iron ore jigging and what valuable information could be obtained. The results indicated that detailed information on the stratification rate of a particle could be obtained, with adequate resolution to track the particle?s movement through an individual jig pulse.

Safety is the No. 1 concern of any drill contractor or mine operator. Everyone in the industry knows a safe site helps stabilize operational costs and enables higher productivity. When it comes to exploration drilling, research has proven a majority of injuries are caused by the mishandling of coring rods. A driller helper will typically handle up to 50 rods per shift or up to 15,000 rods per year. With an annual 340 t (750,000 lb) in rods managed by hand, the risk of serious injury is extremely high. Because of this, the top request from the exploration industry is diamond rod handling. The quality of Pregnant Leach Solution (PLS) at Skorpion Zinc is of utmost importance for efficient operation of the Solvent Extraction (SX) Plant. Suspended solids in the PLS forms CRUD in the settlers, resulting in reduced zinc transfer capacity and increased impurity carry over to Electrowinning. The Ishigaki Fibre-Wakishimizu filter (fibre media rapid filtration equipment) has been identified as polishing filter that potentially could remove solids from the PLS of Skorpion Zinc. A pilot unit with 20m³/h capacity was tested on site over a period of 9 months under plant operating conditions in the refinery. The FW filter produces a clear filtrate, acceptable for the Solvent Extraction. Turbidity is improved by 72%. Gravimetric analysis indicates a 47% removal of solids. However, the gravimetric method is biased by a co-precipitation of saturated salts during the analysis. Filter media is blinded by the Skorpion Zinc PLS solution, as result of suspended solids and process chemistry. The media could not be regenerated to acceptable conditions. Further testwork to investigate the impact of process solution chemistry modification on blinding is undertaken. Based on the outcome of this investigation a final decision on the FW filter can be taken.

It is no need to say that exploitation of industrial minerals has a close relation to development of the industries related. In the first stage, a small scale manufactures were initiated in areas producing some main raw material minerals. China and cement manufactures, for example, were established depending on the local occurrence of raw materials such as kaolin and limestone without exception. That is, the industrial development is greatly influenced by the local production of the raw materials in the stage. With the development of industrial technology, various kinds of raw material minerals are explored to meet the demands of industries in the second stage. New materials become indispensable, and low-grade raw material minerals, which were left as useless, are developed as useful materials. In the stage, the development of raw material minerals is accelerated by that of industrial technology related. However, industries mainly rely on domestic production of the min raw material minerals.

"Exploration for copper, in a region of 7,000 square miles on the Arctic coast between longitudes 114 and 118 degrees west, has covered a period of nearly 200 years. Occurrences of native copper, used by the natives for tools and weapons, have been reported since the early part of the eighteenth century. In J 771 Samuel Hearne of the Hudson's Bay Company, in the course of his classic 3-year journey from Fort Churchill, became the first white man to see the deposits, and incidentally the first to reach the Canadian Arctic coast by land. During the next 140 years the deposits were mentioned by every explorer and traveller who passed through the area. A good historical summary of this literature has been presented by Tyrrell (1912).In 1911-12 the Douglas-Sandberg party did the first geological mapping along the Coppermine River and Dismal Lakes (Douglas, J., 1913; Douglas, G. M., 1914), and described the copper occurrences there. In 1914 J. J. O'Neill (1924) of the Canadian Arctic Expedition investigated the showings on Bathurst Inlet. In 1929-31 two Canadian exploration companies sent prospectors and geologists to the area (Gilbert, 1931; Norrie, 1931; Duncan, 1931). Since that time only brief references have been published (Kidd, 1931; Stockwell and Kidd, 1931; Lord, 1941, 1951; Washburn, 1947). In 1943-45 an area of more than 1,500 square miles was prospected by American Metal Co. of Canada, Ltd., under the direction of the writer. Forty-nine showings were examined; seven of these were mapped in detail by plane-table and two were sampled by 27 short diamond drill holes totalling 3,061 feet. All holes were in permanently frozen rock, and the deepest vertical distance reached was 206 feet. Five groups of claims were staked. These later lapsed, but one of the groups was restaked in 1951, and assessment drilling and some trenching were carried out in 1952-53. Results were disappointing, and the claims have been allowed to lapse.The area is within the Arctic Circle, northeast of Great Bear Lake and 360 miles north of Yellowknife on Great Slave Lake. For exploration purposes, access is by aircraft from Yellowknife. During the short open season heavy freight can be brought by sea to Coppermine at the mouth of the river, either from Aklavik at the mouth of the Mackenzie or around Alaska. Concentrates would have to be moved by these routes.Although none of the deposits so far found is mineable under present conditions, the total volume of copper in the numerous showings marks the district as a major area of copper mineralization, which may some day be of economic importance."

THE Twin "J" Mine, operated by Twin "J" Mines, Limited, represents an amalgamation of the old Lenora, Tyee, and Richard III mines (see Figure 1) on mount Sicker, eight miles by road, northwesterly, from the city of Duncan, on Vancouver island. These mines produced 253,000 tons of copper-gold ore between 1898 and 1909 (see Table I). During the more recent period of production from these properties, July, 1943, to May, 1944, Twin ?J? Mines, Limited, mined and milled ore with values mainly in copper and zinc, and minor values in gold, silver, and lead. Figures are not available for this later production. Field work at the property was started by the writer in 1941 and continued in 1943 and 1944.

The cold, or Kississing, Lake area in northwestern Manitoba was the scene of considerable prospecting and mining activity last summer. At the Sherritt-Gordon property, four diamond drills were at work exploring a large deposit of copper and zinc ore, and underground work was in progress on this deposit from two shafts. Some preliminary diamond drilling was completed in five other deposits, and surface exploration work was in progress at a dozen or more additional localities where copper and zinc sulphides were known to be present. Many prospectors visited the area and spent some time in search for new deposits, but apparently few discoveries were made; consequently, last autumn some returned a little disappointed in the area as a prospecting field. Although many visited Cold Lake area last summer in the search for mineral deposits, it should be emphasized that this new prospecting field is a very large one, and that to date only a small proportion of the ground has been examined, except in a very general way. Within the past 18 months, a village of several dozen cabins, and with a population of l00 or more persons, has sprung up on the shore of Cold lake, just west of the Sherritt-Gordon mine. This at present is the business centre of the area, and two banks, a post office - named Kississing by the Postal authorities - a Mining Recorder's office, as well as several restaurants and stores carrying a fairly complete stock of groceries, dry-goods, and general prospecting equipment, are already established.

Thermodynamic properties of the solutions of hydrogen in metals and carbon in austenite were investigated and it is possible to predict the interstitial solubility in these systems over relatively wide ranges of temperature and solute activity. Monte Carlo methods were used to compute the arrangements of interstitial atoms on the tetrahedral sites in body centred cubic metals and the octahedral sites in face centred cubic metals. It was shown that the non-configurational entropies of solution of hydrogen in metals can be interpreted as being principally vibrational and on this basis the potential value of the isotopic solubility ratio theory in indicating the compositional variation of these non-configurational entropies was discussed. The need for future work along these lines is pointed out.

Financially troubled Charter Oil Co., joint owner of the refinery with Chevron Oil Bahamas Ltd., agreed in principle to have Chevron assume full ownership in return for canceling debts owed Chevron. Finalization of the agreement was pending at yearend. Burmah Oil Ltd. took more than a $30 million loss on the sale of its interest in South Riding Point Grand Bahama Transshipment Terminal to South Riding Point Terminal Holding Ltd.

"Preventing machine-related injuries is one of the major safety concerns in underground coal mines. Severe injuries and fatalities occur when a miner is struck, crushed, or pinned by mining equipment such as a continuous mining machine (CMM), shuttle car, or a scoop. Proximity detection systems (PDSs) have been applied in mining to reduce these types of injuries and fatalities. All of the PDSs that are currently approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for use in underground coal mines are magnetic-field based and could be affected by metallic objects such as trailing cables. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) investigated the influence of trailing cables on the performance of PDSs. In particular, the magnetic field coupled from proximity system generators to a de-energized trailing cable were characterized. The results show that significant energy can be coupled from the proximity system generators to a trailing cable when there is a closed loop in the cable. The effect on PDS performance from the magnetic field radiated around an energized trailing cable was also quantified for different current amplitudes in the cable. It is shown that the magnetic field caused by the electric current in the trailing cable mainly consists of a 60-Hz signal and its harmonics which cause little interference to the PDS. The results presented in this paper can help PDS manufacturers to design better systems that are more immune to these effects. INTRODUCTION An average of 250 injuries occur every year during operation of Continuous mining machines (CMMs), and 43 miners have been killed by striking or pinning accidents involving CMMs in the U.S. from 1984 to 2015 (Mine Safety and Health Administration, 2015). In addition, there have been 10 fatal accidents involving mobile haulage equipped with trailing cables from 2000 to 2015 (Noll et al., 2017). In response to these fatalities and injuries the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) promulgated a regulation in 2015 requiring the use of a proximity detection system (PDS) on all CMMs except full-face machines and proposed a regulation in 2016 which would require a PDS on other mobile underground equipment. Current PDSs approved for underground use are magnetic-field based. The PDS contains machine-mounted magnetic field generators that create fields around the machine. The other part of the PDS is a miner-wearable component (MWC) that reads the flux density of the generators. These systems use the magnetic field strength readings from the MWC to determine whether a miner is at a safe distance from the machine. A stable magnetic field is essential for the accuracy of the system."

"As part of the preparations for the design of an underground repository for radioactive waste at Posiva’s Olkiluoto site on the west coast of Finland, there has been considerable site investigation work. Except the extensive surface based investigations, Posiva started in 2004 the construction of an underground characterisation facility termed the ‘ONKALO’. The ONKALO has now been completely excavated to the anticipated repository depth i.e. -430–450 m. The research conducted in the ONKALO gives further information on the bedrock and groundwater conditions of the final disposal site, as well as on the impact of the construction. The ONKALO provides an excellent opportunity to investigate the rock at tunnel scale, to conduct in-situ testing in rock, to develop excavation and final disposal techniques in realistic conditions. The ONKALO has aided in collecting the data needed, supported by a Preliminary Safety Assessment, for the application of the construction license that was submitted in the end of 2012. The target is to begin disposal operations in 2022. According to current plans, the final disposal would end in 2112 and the repository would be sealed up by 2120. The testing in the ONKALO still continues several years. This paper presents the current characterisation and research activities in the ONKALO. INTRODUCTIONAfter the Finnish Government's favourable policy decision in 2001, Posiva Oy, which is an expert organisation responsible for the final disposal of spent nuclear fuel of the owners in Finland, has focused further investigations at the Olkiluoto site, western Finland (Figure 1) and has started in 2004 the construction of an underground facility termed the ‘ONKALO’. The ONKALO is not a nuclear waste repository, but more than just an underground research laboratory URL – it is an underground rock characterisation facility. The ONKALO has now been completely excavated to the anticipated repository depth i.e. -430–450 m. In addition to facilitating bedrock research, the ONKALO also provides an opportunity to develop excavation techniques and final disposal techniques in realistic conditions. Later, the ONKALO facilities can be put into use when building and using the repository. The construction methods and materials have been selected in order not to jeopardise the long-term safety of the repository site. The findings of the ONKALO and other investigations will provide the knowledge needed for an application, supported by a Preliminary Safety Assessment, to construct a final repository for spent nuclear fuel at the site. Posiva has submitted an application for the construction licence for a disposal facility in the end of 2012. The target is to begin disposal operations in 2022 and the repository would be sealed up by 2120."

The use of column flotation was considered for the ?reverse flotation? of iron ore, where the gangue (quartz) was recovered in the froth product. This use of the froth for carrying the gangue mineral rather than carrying the valuable concentrate significantly changes the operational requirements of the column. The objective of this work was to determine which of several column flotation technologies would be most suitable for this type of flotation operation. Studies were carried out using both the Jameson column and the Deister column. Comparative results are presented that show the capabilities of both column types in this application relative to conventional Wemco flotation cells. Columns were demonstrated to have grade-recovery performance superior to what could be achieved with conventional cells. Two-stage flotation with the columns could produce a concentrate that was up to 70.2% Fe at 87.5% iron recovery, compared to 70.4% Fe at only 77.7% iron recovery for four stages of flotation in conventional cells. It was shown to be particularly important to operate the columns to recover a maximum of the quartz gangue into the froth. It was noted that there are often problems in scale-up of laboratory columns to plant scale, because the increase in height and the decrease in the ratio of height to diameter at the larger scale allows more axial mixing and bubble coalescence, both of which degrade the column performance. Horizontal baffling was shown to improve column performance by reducing axial mixing and breaking up large bubbles, and so the use of such baffles in the reverse flotation application was investigated.
