"We have conducted analytical and technological evaluation of sepiolite containing clay. The possible areas of application of the sepiolite have been investigated and complex methods of enrichment of natural sepiolite have been identified. It was determined that for preserving the structure of minerals after processing the most effective method of the natural agglomerates disintegration was the soft abrasion of the clay fraction up to 0,5 mm. Disintegration of sepiolite clay along with using high energy-stressed effects on the matrix can deteriorate the rheological properties of clay suspensions and reduce the yield of drilling mud and sorption properties. To improve the quality of clay powders we used combined gravity-modifying method of wet enrichment. After the wet enrichment the yield of drilling mud increased up to 12.7 m3/t, with the addition of MgO up to 20,3 m3/t. It was noted that drilling muds contenting more than 50% of sepiolite are stable in mineralized (salt) waters. Based on the studied activated sepiolite rocks we obtained the effective heat-insulating materials with relatively low thermal conductivity – 0,165 W/m·K, average strength – 7,29 MPa and water absorption-49,0%.INTRODUCTION The modern development of the Russian economy requires the implementation of scientific and technical tasks. The solutions of it involves a radical reduction in energy, heat losses and material consumption of products, rational and efficient using of all types of resources, as well as the using of new types of mineral raw materials and materials based on it. An example of a new type of mineral raw materials for Russia is sepiolite containing rocks, due to unconventional conditions for their soils accumulation in the climate of the Far North. Sepiolite is a unique type of nonmetallic mineral. It is formed in soils, marine and saline basins, occurs in carbonate and carbonate-clay rocks in the form of lenses and lens – shaped layers, rarely nodules, loose powdery masses, shell-like concretions. Sepiolite may have a soft porous macroscopic appearance or less often the structure of the fibrous mass. Color of sepiolite is from white to cream with gray, green, pink and even crimson shade depending on the degree of pollution. Sepiolite can be in two forms - a-sepiolite (parasepiolite), which occurs in the form of large packets of crystalline fibers and ß-sepiolite, which occurs in the form of amorphous aggregates or small flat rounded particles. The sepiolite fibers have a length of from 0.2 to 2 Å, width from 100 to 300 Å, the thickness from 50 to 100 Å (Geological dictionary, 1973)."

This paper will review several flyrock incidents that occurred recently in the South African mining industry to highlight that potential difficulties of the historical approaches to the problem of flyrock based on correlation studies and regression analysis, including artificial neural networks and similar techniques. These process are not capable of addressing two core issues – root causes of flyrock and projection velocity. A further shortcoming of correlation techniques is that they give no information on the influence of rock size and shape on the flight distance. The scaled depth of burial model for crater blasting in the collar zone and bench face does not specifically address the question of flyrock velocity. A third approach, based on flight trajectory calculations, often neglects the very significant effects of air resistance on the trajectory. Some trajectory models incorporate air resistance but use an implausible fragment velocity model that cannot propel sizeable rocks to distances much beyond 150 m. (Approximately 500 ft.) Nonetheless, trajectory calculation incorporating the effects of air drag affords the most promising approach to the prediction of flyrock range. A unique and insightful feature of the proposed realistic flight modelling is that it collapses all suspected causes of flyrock, many of which are not well understood, to just a single parameter – the launch velocity. This indicates that the root causes of flyrock lie in the mechanisms of momentum transfer to broken rock and suggests new avenues of study for the explosives industry. In this paper we use the trajectory model to identify certain conditions on the bench whereby the impulse of gas pressure acting on fractured material on or close to a free face is enhanced, resulting in a greater transfer of momentum to potential flyrocks.

Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (SIMS) was used to study copper ion adsorption, and its effect on subsequent sulfide collector adsorption, on pyrite and pyroxene minerals under flotation related conditions. Copper was found to adsorb on both of these minerals and cause enhanced sulfide collector adsorption. The distribution and depth profile of copper and collector on these mineral surfaces were obtained by using SIMS in the imaging mode. The results of this study have provided a valuable insight to understanding pyrite and gangue flotation observed frequently in operating plants.

"The high temperature oxidizing-chloridizing roasting is one of useful methods to separate nonferrous metals from pyrite cinder and metallurgy slag. However, as one kind of main nonferrous metals in pyrite cinder and metallurgy slag, copper’s chlorination behavior is not demonstrated. In the present study, chlorination behaviors of CuO, Cu2O and CuS at the temperature range of 1025-1175 ? in air by simulating the chloridizing roasting process of pyrite cinder and metallurgy slag have been investigated. It is shown that Cu2O and CuS is much easier to remove, CuO is refractory to remove. In addition, the presence of SiO2 and CaO increases the Cu removal rate from CuO while the presence of SiO2, Al2O3, CaO and MgO decreases the Cu removal rate from Cu2O. Fe3O4 influences the Cu removal rate from CuO and Cu2O positively.IntroductionAs two kinds of significant secondary resources, pyrite cinder and metallurgy slag contain not only abundant iron but also considerable copper, lead, zinc etc. Millions of tons of pyrite cinder and metallurgy slag were discharged from nonferrous metal and chemical industries annually [1, 2] in China. The pyrite cinder and metallurgy slag are formed by roasting of minerals at a high temperature, so the properties of them are distinctly different from the natural iron ores, and the iron in them is closely associated with copper, lead, zinc and other nonferrous metals. High-quality pyrite cinder and metallurgy slag containing high iron and low impurities can hardly be obtained, leading to their low utilization degree [3]. Chlorination is characterized by the high reactivity of chloridion, the high volatility and low melting point of metal chlorides, and the big differences in the formation of metal chloride. Therefore, chlorination is widely applied in extraction metallurgy."

The ISO TC 226 (Materials for the production of primary aluminium) has presently issued more than one hundred standards on the materials: alumina, pitch, petroleum coke, carbon anodes, carbon cathodes, ramming paste, fluorides and refractory). The object of the standardization work is to find methods that both material producers and smelters will accept. Methods that are specific for the operational conditions have been developed in addition to more traditional room temperature methods. Examples of important properties under operational conditions are: Air and C02 reactivity of anodes, Equivalent temperature for baked anodes, Sodium expansion of cathode blocks, Shrinkage and Rammability of paste, Penetration of electrolyte into refractories.

"Ordered arrays of TiO2 nanotubular photocatalysts were prepared by a simple anodization process. Band gap states of the TiO2 were altered by controlling the anodization electrolyte composition and thermal annealing conditions that resulted in enhanced photo activity. These nanotubes were used for reducing CO2 to methanol either by photochemical or photo electrochemical routes. Pd nano-particle loaded TiO2 nanotubes were employed for photochemical reduction of CO2 to methanol that showed a conversion rate of 12 x 10-3 mol m- 2h-1. Carbon modified TiO2-xCx type nanotubes were used as photo anode and Ti as cathode for photo electrochemical reduction of CO2. The potential of Ti cathode was maintained at -0.5 V SCE. The formation rate of methanol was determined as 13 x 10-3 mol.m-2h-1.1. IntroductionGlobal warming due to emission of carbon dioxide is a serious environmental concern. The atmospheric concentration of CO2 is about 384 ppm by volume and about 3 x 1012 tonnes by weight. Burning of fossil fuels and deforestation are the leading causes for increase in the anthropogenic CO2. More than 32 x 109 tonnes of CO2 are released per year (based on 2006 data) worldwide from the fossil fuel. Pumping CO2 from the fossil fuel power plants into deep ocean basin is one of the most discussed disposal options. The other potential option is converting this green house gas into valuable fuels.Carbon dioxide feed stock can be converted into fuels of solid, liquid or gas phase by chemical, electrolytic, photocatalytic and photo-electrocatalytic methods. Reduction of CO2 to fuel form of any phase requires energy. The reduction process should be energy efficient so that we do not spend more energy and emit more (indirect) CO2 in the process of converting CO2. From this point of view, conversion processes occurring at room temperature look attractive.Electrolytic conversion of CO2 into various forms such as methane1, ethane2, ethylene3, methanol4,5, ethanol6, n-propanol, formic acid7, and formaldehyde has been widely reported. The standard equilibrium potential (at pH: 0) for reduction of CO2 to methanol is 0.14 VSHE and to methane is 0.2 VSHE which is thermodynamically more favorable than hydrogen reduction. The treatment of iron-hydroxide-containing water from ground water and surface water is achieved by a combination of the process steps of flocculation and subsequent mechanical dewatering. The aim is to create solid pellet structures by extending the structure forming flocculation process with a build-up pelletizing process which can be transferred directly into a drying unit. A Taylor-Couette-reactor (diameter of the inner cylinder – 40 mm, gap width – 5 mm) was used for these experimental studies. To produce the necessary flow profile the inner cylinder was rotated at a speed of 230 rpm. The iron hydroxide-containing suspension (dry matter content: 2 mass %) was added simultaneously with the addition of a cationic high-molecular flocculant in various flocculant dosages and residence times of 5 to 15 min. The pellets were examined for parameters such as geometric dimensions, dry substance content and dewatering behaviour. As the results show, there is a direct relationship between the residence time and the geometric dimensions of the pellets. After a residence time of 5 min, round pellets with an average diameter of 6 mm were formed. With an increase in the residence time up to 15 min, a compaction of the pellets could be observed, which resulted in an increase in the dry substance content of 8.0 to 11.2 mass % on average. After completion of the pelletizing process, the pellets were mechanically dewatered by filtration. By applying this innovative wet pelletizing of iron-hydroxide containing suspensions in a Taylor-Couette-reactor, it is possible to carry out the process of flocculation combined with the pellet formation with simultaneous pellet compaction in a single process step. The resulting pellet structures are distinguished from conventional floc structures by an improved water discharge capacity. After classification the pellets can be marked directly as easy-to-handle bulk material, suitable as feedstock in percolation columns for the purification of contaminated fluid streams

At the Hudbay zinc pressure leach plant, filtration and washing of the second stage leach slurry takes place on a vacuum belt filter prior to disposal to tailings. Most coal mining areas of the Western United States are characterized either by thick beds, steep pitches or heavy cover. Individually, each of these may present inherent safety hazards that influence miring. When all are met at one location, the combined effect is to make the safe operation of the mining property a challenge to management. These combined, conditions are met in most coal mines in southeastern Utah including those of the United States Steel Corporation. This coal bed measures up to 16 feet in thickness, the pitch is as much as 25% and mining is under a cover approaching 2, 000 feet. The Sunnyside coal bed is found in the Book Cliff Mountains, a great escarpment extending from west of Castle Gate, Utah, some 180 miles to Grand Junction, Colorado. West of Green River, Utah, the Book Cliffs swing sharply to the north because of the domelike uplift of the San Rafael Swell to the southwest..It is in this northerly extension of the Book Cliffs that the Sunnyside coal in the Blackhawk Formation of the Mesa Verde Group, Upper Cretaceous Age is found. The strata are transected by numerous faults with from a few inches to as much as a hundred feet of displacement. All of these faults have had some effect on the mining operation, either in roof control or, in the case of major faulting, the pattern of mine development.

A 0.60 km2 (150 acre) wetland was reclaimed by Agrico Mining Company as part of a 1.48 km2 (366 acre) reclamation program in southwest Polk County, Florida approved by the Florida Department of Natural Resources. The upland portion of the area provides watershed for the wetland site which overflows into the flood plain of Payne Creek. Construction of the wetland was designed to provide conditions favorable for a diversity of habitats, as well as retention time for surface runoff waters. A variety of revegetation methods, including innoculation with muck from unmined wetland depressions, have produced encouraging results with both woody and herbaceous species.

The primary reason pigments are used in plastics is to impart a desired color to the plastic. Color is one of the more important assign considerations associated with today's market oriented society. Secondary reasons for adding pigments to plastics include: 1. Improved UV stability 2. Enhancement to selected physical properties 3. Changes in optical properties Pigments may be used at loadings as high as 20% or as low as .001%. Generally the loading levels are between 0.2% and 2.0%. Pigments may be added to the plastic either by the manufacturer of the plastic, or by the user of the plastic. If the customer buys material that is already colored, it is referred to as "pre-colored". If the customer buys uncolored plastic and adds colorants, the process is referred to as "in-house" coloring.

This Bureau of Mines report has been prepared to provide a means whereby mineworkers without specific geologic training can recognize and record the existence of potentially hazardous geologic features encountered in coal mines. Each geologic feature described in this report has been implicated in roof failure. Through the recording of the observations of mineworkers, based on this report, a geologic map of mine workings and the associated ground control problems can be compiled. From such maps, the trends of changes and features can be determined and projected ahead of mining. The face crew can be alerted to a potential problem and what to look for as the face is advanced.

"Darcy's law is widely used to describe the oil and gas flow characteristics in the multi-pore media reservoir. However, the low-velocity non-Darcy flow of oil and gas occurs in the multi-pore media reservoir under low permeability conditions. Meanwhile, the high-velocity non-Darcy flow of oil and gas occurs in the multi-pore media near the wellbore. The gas flow velocities in coal in different deformation stage under different gas pressure gradient were tested and the relationships between gas flow velocity and gas pressure gradient were discussed, which can help us to investigate the transformation conditions of gas linear flow and gas nonlinear flow in coal. The results showed that the gas flow in the coal under low effective stress environment can be described by Darcy's law. The low-velocity non-Darcy flow of gas gradually occurred and the start-up pressure gradient increased in the coal as the effective stress increased. The low-velocity non-Darcy flow of gas also occurred in the coal at the yield deformation stage, however, the start-up pressure gradient decreased as the effective stress increased in this stage. In post-peak stage, the highvelocity non-Darcy flow of gas occurred in the coal under low effective stress environment. The gas flow in the coal gradually returned to be Darcy flow as the effective stress increased. The mechanism of the phenomenon is discussed based on the experimental results. The research results can be used to guide well test analysis and prediction of oil-gas production. The gas flow in the multi-pore media even may be unsteady under some conditions such as gas emission and outburst.The phenomenon of underground water low-velocity flow in clays was deviated from Darcy’s law was found in the end of the nineteenth century (King, 1898). The deviation from Darcy’s law was later reported and investigated more (Swartzendruber, 1962; Miller and Low, 1963). These researches revealed that the start-up pressure gradient exists under low permeability conditions. Klinkenberg (1941) proposed that the permeability constant as determined with gases is dependent upon the property of the gas, and is a linear function of the reciprocal mean pressure. This effect can be explained by taking into account the phenomena of slip, which are related closely to the mean free paths of the gas molecules."

Developing and operating mines in developing countries is never dull, but continuously challenging in terms of geology and terrain, geography and location, culture and land tenure, environmental and social issues, fiscal regimes and in some cases political risk. In addition, the rapidly changing nature of the communities with little understanding of the nature of mining at the community level requires us to continually manage issues affecting project development and mine operations with greater sensitivity. In frontier regions, people skills can become more essential than technical skills, particularly in dealing with indigenous people. Hence, managing a mining project requires a huge relationship effort.Effective communication with communities of different cultural background and proactive management of issues influencing community aspirations and desires requires not only new skills but also creativity with new concepts on how to deal with social issues under a different cultural context. The involvement of government agencies and NGOs is an important ingredient to creating understanding and collaborative approaches to common social issues. Maintaining stakeholder relationships pays in the long-run and is a useful exercise in getting information feedback from the wider community.

Recent events in The Peoples Republic of China indicate that a major effort is underway to increase trade with the western world. Gold production contributes to China's ability to participate in international trade. Consequently, the Chinese government places a high priority on increasing gold production. Many of the operating gold mines in China contain refractory ores that to date have not been efficiently treated. Figure 1 illustrates the description and location of a few of China's major gold mines. China recognizes that the technology necessary to economically treat this ore has been developed in the United States and other western countries. The country has therefore begun to seek assistance in evaluating several potential projects. Organizational structure Gold mining and processing in China is directed by the China National Gold Corp. (CNGC), headquartered in Beijing. The agency has a director in each province who is responsible for exploration, mining and processing. CNGC uses the services of two engineering organizations for metallurgical testing, process development and design engineering for their projects. The largest engineering organization is the Central Engineering and Research Institute for Non-Ferrous Metallurgical Industries (ENFI), also located in Beijing. The second engineering organization is the Changchun Gold Design Institute (CGDI), located in Changchun Jilin province.

"Segregation of impurities during refining of metallurgical grade silicon (MG-Si) is an option to produce solar grade silicon (SG-Si). Directional solidification is a last step in production of SG-Si effective for removal of metallic impurities. The possibility is investigated to use metallic impurities originally present in MG-Si for removing boron and phosphorus. MG-Si has been treated using two methods: 1) alloying with calcium and 2) refining with Na2O-CaO-SiO2 slag, both by controlled cooling. The microstructure of silicon and the impurities distribution have been studied before and after the treatments. Using EPMA phosphorus and boron have been detected in 1-2 wt% concentration range in several intermetallic compounds in grain boundaries after both treatments. This observation points to a different possible mechanism of silicon refining from boron and phosphorus. Controlled cooling improves migration of phosphorus and boron to the silicide phases in grain boundaries, which can be removed by acid leaching treatment.2. IntroductionStandards for silicon solar cells and growing demand on “green” energy require economical and efficient route to the production of solar grade silicon. Refining of cheap metallurgical grade silicon is one of the promising options, where application of existing metallurgical approaches can result in cost-efficient production on industrial scale. Focus in refining is on impurities, which are most difficult to remove: B, P, Al, Ti, due to their large segregation coefficient in silicon and low vapour pressure [1]. Moreover, more environmentally friendly technology in comparison to the traditional Siemens process [2] will be in accordance with societal needs. Based on properties of common impurities in metallurgical grade silicon, alloying refining and slag refining are suggested as competitive techniques having potential effect on removal of impurities harmful for conversion of solar energy [3, 4]. Alloying with Ca followed by acid leaching was found to be effective for removal of Fe and Ti from silicon [5] and to enhance also removal of boron [6] and phosphorus [7, 8]. In the work of Inoue et al. [8] drastically increasing removal of phosphorus from silicon has been observed with an increase of Ca content and a thermodynamics-based explanation was provided. Since phosphorus has been found to condense in the secondary precipitate mainly composed of CaSi2, it can be removed together with iron and titanium by consecutive acid leaching treatment. Slag refining is one of the metallurgical methods proposed to be effective for refining of metallurgical grade silicon from boron [9, 10]. Slags with additions of the following oxides to silica have shown positive effect on removal of boron: CaO [11-13], Na2O [11,14]. Mechanism of slag refining from boron is based on oxidation of boron followed by its incorporation in the slag network [9,11]; the same mechanism is suggested for refining from phosphorus taking into account that oxides of boron and phosphorus are known as network-formers [15]."

The plant and processing site at Porgera has been built on a levelled mudstone ridge about lkm E of the mine. Excavation of 7xl06m3 of soil and rock was necessary to achieve the required area. The exposed mudstone belongs to the Chico Formation and is weak, sheared and readily breaks down by slaking upon exposure. Tectonic uplift and subsequent erosion have produced the present landscape of narrow bedrock ridges, with deep colluvium in the incised valleys. The deep excavation to a maximum of 60m, has rapidly unloaded the mudstone, and subsequent stress relief has caused rebound and dilation of the material. The processes of pore pressure equilibration, softening, progressive failure and loosening, combine to deteriorate the newly exposed rock mass. The catalytic converter industry is composed largely of global multinational manufacturers who supply to vehicle manufacturers (original equipment manufacturers ? OEMs) from facilities strategically located internationally, including plants in South Africa. The South African catalytic converter production facilities were established at the request of the OEMs and commenced manufacture in the early 1990s. This near 100 per cent export focused industry exists in South Africa because of the incentives offered by the Motor Industry Development Programme (MIDP), which ultimately provide the OEM with import duty rebates. The South African catalytic converter industry is a complex vertically-integrated supply chain with a local content in excess of 85 per cent, substantially more than any other exported automotive component. The industry remains one of the very few downstream manufacturing industries where South Africa has a significant global footprint. This is even more important when it is considered that this industry is the key end-user for two of South Africa?s most important mineral resources, namely platinum group metals (PGMs) and chromium, and is in an industry which will see massive global growth as the developing nations of the BRICs grow their auto industries. In over 15 years of existence in South Africa, the catalytic converter industry has achieved remarkable growth, averaging compound growth in the region of 14 per cent per annum. The industry is the highest contributor to automotive component export revenue. South Africa holds >8 per cent% of global PGM reserves. During 2011, South Africa supplied 59 per cent, 29 per cent, and 72 per cent of the global demand for platinum, palladium, and rhodium respectively, as well as over 50 per cent of the global chromium demand. Global autocatalyst production remains the largest consumer of PGMs, and South Africa alone beneficiated 15 per cent of locally mined PGMs in the production of catalytic converters ? all is converted from PGM sponge (powdered metal) into PGM solutions for coating onto catalysts. Beneficiation of PGMs also takes place via the production of jewellery and electronic goods; but compared to catalytic converters, this volume is negligible. The industry is also the largest consumer of locally produced stainless steel (>50 000 t/a), exceeding 38 per cent of local consumption. The industry is a substantial generator of highly skilled employment, with over 5 000 direct jobs (excluding OEMs and stainless steel manufacture) and an estimated more than 30 000 indirect jobs resulting from upstream and side-stream suppliers. The industry places a high focus on skills transfer and development, with all companies providing high-tech training and education both locally and overseas. The industry has invested in excess of R5 billion in plant, equipment, people development, and process development over the last 15 years to support transfer of production and new technologies to South Africa. This has resulted in significant skills development in the support industries as well as within the catalytic converter industry. The current projections for local PGM beneficiation via catalytic converters reflect a downward trend as a result of production being moved to other global locations due to uncertainty around changes to government incentive programmes. The industry is currently capacitated to support 23.7 million units per annum. During 2011 it utilized about 70 per cent of this capacity, but forecast projections suggest that this will be at 46 per cent of this level by 2016. At full capacity the industry would represent 19 per cent of global autocatalyst production compared with the current 13 per cent in 2011. The industry believes that there is potential to make South Africa the preferred location for catalytic converters worldwide, given suitable support from the mines and Government.
