Start-up of a Hall-Heroult cell is a delicate task that can affect pot performance and pot life. Modem practices for high amperage cells involve preheating the lining before the molten electrolyte is poured in. Different preheating methods and heat-up schedules are used throughout the industry, and the optimum between a short start-up and damage minimization to the cell is elusive. Direct electrical coke-bed preheating is one of the most common techniques. This practice typically results in a non-uniform surface temperature distribution and can generate detrimental thermal gradients in the cathode blocks. Numerical modeling is an invaluable tool to study this complex problem and can help improve the preheating procedures. The modeling of the mechanical response of the lining is critical to detect risks of cathode block cracking or the development of gaps where liquids could leak into. Taking into account the baking of ramming paste, the quasi-brittle nature of carbon and the contact interfaces between different materials are examples of key elements to consider. A finite element slice model of a cell was built and simulations of different electrical preheating scenarios were performed using the inhouse code FESh++ to demonstrate what can be learned through thermo-chemomechanical modeling. The potential industrial application of the model is discussed.

"INTRODUCTION In most oil fields, natural gas is the major source of energy causing flow of oil to the well. The amount of gas Produced with the oil generally exceeds actual energy requirements, so that in time the gas reserve of the field becomes seriously depleted and the oil production must be stimulated by some auxiliary means. One of these is to repressure the oil formation with natural gas; or, where a gas supply is not available, often air is used.Although P.ir is a Cheap and convenient repressuring medium, its use sometimes is attended with several disadvantages. First, the return air-gas mixture decreases rapidly in fuel value, often until it can be used no longer as a source of power. At the same time, explosive mixtures may result if recycling is used, causing hazards to life and equipment. Second, some fields experience considerable trouble with the formation of emulsions which become increasingly difficult to treat. Although there is no definite proof that air repressuring always causes these emulsions, many operators are convinced that this is the case. The Petroleum Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines at Bartlesville, Okla., has been interested in problems connected with air-repressuring for a number of years. Some time was spent in studying the so-called ""bad gas""--return,mixture of low fuel value. However, it appeared impossible to attack the problem successfully from this angle, and an approach was made through a laboratory--scale study of direct oxidation of crude oil."

Several parameters controlling the reproducibility of tritium determina¬tion in organic compounds by liquid scintillation counting were evaluated by the Federal Bureau of Mines. These included optimum volume of scintillator solution for maximum counting efficiency, reproducibility of counting a sealed commercial standard and comparison with duplicate counts on laboratory-prepared samples. The error introduced by using microliter pipets, optical differences in counting vials, reproducibility of counting organic samples where quenching is a factor, reproducibility of counting laboratory-prepared samples with an added internal standard, optimum ratio of internal standard activity to sample activity, effect of sample volume upon counting efficiency, count rate at which coincidence losses become apparent, and reproducibility of organic compound radioassay by the standard addition technique are outlined. From the evaluation of these parameters, a technique that can be applied routinely to organic compounds containing tritium has been established, and details are included in this report.

The Cononish gold-silver deposit is a steep, relatively narrow quartz-vein system, with a current total mineral resource of 154 000 oz Au and 589 000 oz Ag. The northeast-southwest trending system was emplaced into late Proterozoic metasediments, and postdates metamorphism and associated Caledonian Orogenic foliations. Assay and mineralogical data show that gold and silver is spatially associated with sulfides in quartz. The main sulfide is pyrite, but galena, chalcopyrite and sphalerite occur in small amounts. Gold occurs as electrum, with minor native gold, and silver occurs additionally as tellurides and native metal. The gold/electrum is fine-grained, generally less than 100 microns in size. The main ore shoots plunge 45¦ south-west, have a 40 m to 80 m intersection with the existing underground development and extend between 40 m and 260 m down plunge. Small-scale sulfide-bearing domains within the vein carry the highest gold grades. They collectively define the ore shoots, where one or two, and rarely three, of the domains are present at an individual site in the vein. Discontinuity of individual domains, variation in domain thickness and internal heterogeneity results in short scale variation in grade across the structure. Geological mapping along a 1.2 km exploration adit has provided critical æconditioningÆ data to support resource evaluation based on development and relatively wide spaced drilling. In addition, it has provided an indication of potential challenges that could be encountered during production.

"This paper outlines a simple methodology for iron ore characterisation. Iron ores commonly contain a range of iron oxides with varying iron content along with generally minor quantities of lighter silicate gangue phases, giving rise to density variations. Companies tend to rely on heavy liquid separation (HLS) in the evaluation of samples arising from exploration, mining or metallurgical processes. Heavy suspension separation (HSS), a simple laboratory technique of density fractionation, employing suspensions of fine tungsten carbide (WC) particles in lithium heteropolytungstate (LST) solutions, can be used in the evaluation of iron ore.As part of Arrium Mining’s program to improve its knowledge of ore types being processed in two hematite ore beneficiation plants (OBP), metallurgical evaluation of hematite feed and geometallurgical evaluation for the OBPs has become a major focus.Metallurgical evaluation of the hematite ore ultra-fine size fraction, formally treated as waste but now upgraded by HSS, is a part of Arrium’s program to improve recovery.The HLS method for iron ore characterisation is not generally used as part of routine iron ore feed metallurgical evaluation due to the expense, toxicity and time-consuming nature of the technique. Results show that the HSS method for iron ore characterisation can achieve low-cost, low-toxic separation and can be used on-site to improve turnaround time of results (Begelhole, Jasper and Koroznikova, 2013).Arrium have applied this technique successfully for the past three years to progress process improvement for the two OBP as well as to assist Arrium’s on-site laboratory services, Bureau Veritas in Whyalla.The main objective of this program has been to further develop the HSS procedures using a low-toxicity, high specific gravity (SG) suspension; LST and WC as the dense medium for metallurgical evaluation of ultra-fines.A suspension of a particular density will separate iron ore into two products: a sink fraction (denser iron oxide – hydroxide particles) and float fraction (silicate – iron ore composite particles). A theoretical grade and mass recovery can be calculated, and a grade – mass recovery curve can be constructed for iron.Metallurgical evaluation of the plant feed ultra-fine size fractions are used to improve efficiency of an upgrading plant process. Colony Development Operation is a joint venture currently consisting of four active members; The Oil Shale Corporation (TOSCO); Ashland Oil Inc.; Shell Oil Company and Atlantic Richfield Company, operator of the project. The initial efforts on the Colony project began in the spring of 1965. Pilot mining and semi-works engineering programs continued, in phases, to completion in the fall of 1972 when commercialization of oil shale was deemed realistic. Since that time, Colony efforts have been directed toward evaluation of the data collected during the semi-works operation and in designing a commercial operation. In October of 1974, Colony announced: "because of economic and national energy policy uncertainties it was suspending plans to start construction of a commercial oil shale plant on private lands in northwestern Colorado, scheduled for spring of 1975."

The Blocked Iron Corporation has been active for many years in the development of mineral agglomeration processes by cold chemical induration. Millions of tons of iron ore fines agglomerated by their methods have been consumed in open hearth steel making furnaces. Some of you may remember these open hearth agglomerates as the carbonate-bonded cylindrical block shown in figure 1. With the realization that iron making would create the greatest demand for agglomerates our research efforts were directed to the production of carbonate- bonded (C-B) pellets containing iron ore, flux and carbon, shown in figure 2.

Probably no one has had occasion to examine an undeveloped coal property without hearing some hopeful or interested party insist that the bed will improve when opened some distance under cover. When the bed is already in good condition, the opinion is usually advanced that the same character may be expected, at least to the bounds of the hopeful individual's holdings. My attention has been called in this way to the extent to which a bed is affected by its outcrop at the surface ; and having had opportunity to examine a number of openings immediately at the surface, and also a short distance under cover, I submit some observations bearing on this question. Whatever may have been the original variations, we may assume that coal-basins presented in comparatively modern times approximately parallel beds interstratified with fire-clay, slate, sandstone, etc., as represented by Fig. 1. Under the effect of erosion, Fig. 2 would be formed. It is obvious that along the line A, B, C, in Fig. 1, the beds exist under conditions differing from those at A', B', C', or again at A", B", C", in Fig. 2, in their exposures to atmospheric agencies, pressure and erosion. The effect of the first is to decompose and soften many of the strata; of the second, when presented unequally, to cause the movement of such material as was at all plastic towards the point of least pressure ; and of the third, to remove the strata in whole or in part. With the end of active copper mining in 1983, the extensive underground mine workings and the Berkeley Pit, one of the largest open-pit mines in the United States, began to flood. Daily in- flow to the pit is about five million gallons per day, with the water level rising at a rate of 30 feet per year. To support the remedial investigation and feasibility study, a six-layer, three-dimensional MODFLOW-based ground water flow model was constructed to simulate the 9,100-acre site. The vertical domain of the model extended over 1,060 feet of elevation difference and consisted of a finite difference grid of 89 rows by 54 columns. All work was PC- based. Model boundaries were assigned to correspond to natural hydrologic features such as geologic contacts, faults, and surface water features. The fully calibrated model was approved by the State of Montana and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for use in the site remediation. The computer model was used to determine ground water flow velocities and contaminant travel times within the alluvial sediments adjacent to the Berkeley Pit. The purpose of the model was to predict future alluvial ground water flow directions should acid- and heavy metal-laden flood waters filling the Berkeley Pit rise up and enter the Alluvial Aquifer.

The construction of tailings facilities and heap leach pads for gold mining operations generally requires the installation of one or more impermeable liners beneath the structures to satisfy environmental regulations and prevent the leakage of gold bearing solutions. Liners are usually constructed using clay soils or synthetic membranes, such as high density polyethelene. Low permeability soil liners can be constructed from natural clays, well graded soils with only a small clay content, or sandy soils blended with a small quantity of imported clay such as bentonite or kaolinite. The permeability of such materials, prgperly pped with good quality control, generally lies in the range of 10- to 10- cm/s, and can be designed to meet minimum prescriptive standards set by regulatory agencies. Important benefits resulting from the use of clay liners include the slow rate of penetration of a saturated wetting front, the decrease in permeability of the liner as it consolidates under the applied load of tailings or ore, and attenuation of potential contaminants in the process solutions. Synthetic liners can be attributed a finite permeability as a result of minute perforations and seaming deficiencies, and possess none of the above properties. Synthetic liners are also, by their nature, relatively thin and even a small head build-up above the liner will result in a large hydraulic gradient across it.

The effect of oxygen partial pressure on the volatilization percentages of valuable metals from iron-rich pyrite cinder by chlorination-volatilization method using CaCl2 as chlorinating agent was investigated in this study. The volatile products were collected directly and analyzed by X-ray diffraction. It was found that there were CuCl2, CuCl, PbCl2, and ZnCl2 existed in the volatile products. Au and Pb volatilization percentages were almost not affected by oxygen partial pressure. Both Cu and Zn volatilization percentages were negatively correlated with oxygen partial pressure when CaCl2 dosage was no more than 4 wt%, and almost uncorrelated with oxygen partial pressure with a CaCl2 dosage of 6 wt%.

A glauconitic siltstone sample with a potash content of 10% is investigated as a potential potash source. The fine grain structure comprises potash bearing phases of glauconite, muscovite, and microcline. The as-received samples showed poor dissolution ~ 5%. Planetary ball milling was attempted for the dissociation of the underlying silicate structure for the potash release, and ~ 60% potash was obtained after 12-h milling. Mechanical activation (8 h, 60% NaOH) prior to heat treatment (600 °C, 30 min) was found successful in recovering more than 95%K values from glauconite. The final residue consists mainly of quartz, indicating a complete breakdown of the silicate matrix. The mechanical activation process followed is simple, adaptable, and less energyintensive compared to existing methods.

The Sullivan Mining Group has been exploring the mineral deposits of the Mount Pleasant area of southern New Brunswick since 1967. Sullivan geologists have logged over sixty miles of drill core, mapped over five miles of underground workings and studied numerous surface exposures. Several mineralized zones have been defined and two higher-grade porphyrytungsten bodies delineated. Within these bodies, wolframite occurs as disseminated specks and grains up to one-half inch in diameter. The host rock is a brecciated rhyolite porphyry that has intruded quartz-feldspar porphyry of Mississippian age . The host rock is itself intruded by an acid porphyry called transition rock and is underlain by a microgranite. The mineralized zones, host rock, transition rock and microgranite are all thought to be derived from the same magma, and to represent progressive fractions from that magma.

INTRODUCTION The need for Government-sponsored research and development to increase excavation rates and lower costs for tunneling and mining operations in a variety of rock types has been emphasized in a wide range of publications from advisory panels, symposiums on rapid excavation, and individuals. In response to the predicted demands for mining and construction-oriented underground excavations for the next two decades (1970-1989), a comprehensive 10-year, $200-million research program in rapid excavation was proposed by the National Academy of Sciences in 1968 (1). Although the large program recommended by the Academy has not been funded, substantial Government-sponsored research in rapid excavation has been conducted during the past several years. This paper reviews some of the significant research accomplishments obtained under a three-year, $6.6-million research program in rock mechanics and rapid excavation sponsored by the Defense Department's Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) and managed by the Bureau of Mines. In addition to the rock mechanics research, five major phases of excavation; systems analysis, geologic prediction, rock disintegration, ground support, and materials handling were represented by the projects funded under the ARPA program. INTRODUCTION The Crow Butte uranium deposit is located in northwest Nebraska near the town of Crawford (Figure 1). The deposit was discovered during the fall of 1980 by Wyoming Fuel Company, operator of the Crow Butte Joint Venture. The Crow Butte Joint Venture is owned 50 percent by Wyoming Fuel Company, a subsidiary of KN Energy, Inc.; formerly Kansas-Nebraska Natural Gas Company, Inc., 40 percent by Ferret Exploration Company, Inc., and 10 percent by First Exploration Company. A preliminary announcement made in January 1981 indicated a "probable potential" reserve in excess of 25,000, 000 pounds U303. Drilling during 1981 and 1982 confirmed these reserves and indicated the presence of more than 30,000,000 pounds U308 having an average grade in excess of 0.25 percent U308. Wyoming Fuel Company was initially attracted to the area in 1978 by favorable regional geology for sandstone uranium deposits and weak radioactivity noted in regional oil and gas holes. Exploration drilling began in 1979 following the formation of the Crow 3utte Joint Venture. Drilling has continued up to the present, at which time the Joint Venture is ready to proceed with a pilot scale solution mine. Environmental baseline data have been acquired and the permit applications for the pilot scale mine have been submitted to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and to the applicable state agencies in Nebraska.

In recent years, equipment manufacturers have been busy developing remote control systems to catch up with the sophistication and efficiency of continuous miners. Now the tables are turned, and manufacturers are undertaking the new challenge of upgrading, refining and equipping continuous miners to take full advantage of the capabilities made possible by modern, successful remote control systems. Because the operator can safely advance the miner farther without pulling out for roof bolting, continuous miners now need to be equipped with means of complying with correct face ventilation, dust suppression, methane detection, diffusion and improved lighting. Some of the exciting possibilities being developed to catch up with remote control include feedback controls using laser beams as datum points, coal sensing devices with feedback signals to show the operator what the machine is doing, show where it is relative to the coal seam, how hard it is working, and more sophisticated use of cyclic control. Mining machinery manufacturers have accepted the new challenges, and faster, safer mining procedures are already in sight.

The concept of risk management is applied to multiple aspects of the mining lifecycle including safety, mine design, business plan—anything that affects getting the ore to the mill for production. However, risk management is not a topic that can readily be taught in universities. Many situations require knowledge gained from experience to know how this impacts current and future operations. Recent graduates, who must develop and apply decisions based on geotechnical monitoring, likely have not developed “operational experience” and may not be aware of options and typical applications. Thorough resources that explain different monitoring systems, and when and how to implement them, are available for geotechnical professionals. Accessibility to this information can often cause information overload, leaving one unsure of where to start, without knowing where to start. This paper is intended to serve as a high-level overview of development practices, levels of risk, and risk tolerance for entry-level geotechnical and mining professionals who do not come from a geotechnical background. Summarized detail on typical monitoring practices, types of instrumentation, and how to communicate what the data indicates to key stakeholders are provided.

Over 10 million tourists have visited Vietnam in 2016. Travel and tourism accounted for 9.3% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2014. At the same time, as with many other resource-rich developing countries, Vietnam has been developing its extractive resources sector as a means of promoting the country’s social and economic development. In 2015, mining was the third largest contributor to GDP, and accounted for 8% of Vietnam’s gross domestic product. Vietnam is the third largest mineral producer in SE Asia. Although it produces zinc, nickel, bauxite, and manganese, coal mining is its most developed sector. The country has over two hundred coal mines, and total reserves of approximately 6 billion tons. Quang Nihn Province, where the World Heritage Site Ha Long Bay is located, is a very important tourism destination. It is also a coal-rich region where mining extraction and processing have been active since the early 20th century. Vietnam is signatory of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The country is aware of the importance and the challenges involved in managing the extractive sector in a way that does not undermine its tourism industry and yet that contributes to the country’s sustainable development. To this end Vietnam is taking actions towards implementing more advanced coal-mining extraction and processing techniques. The country is furthermore promoting a responsible mining sector, and is investing in programs that foster environmental protection and sustainable tourism. This paper examines the case of the Ha Long Bay region and the project involved in relocating the Hong Gai coal preparatory factory from a seafront area to a mountainside area. This paper provides a preliminary review of the initiatives adopted by the government of Vietnam to address the existing challenges that have resulted from a focus on promoting the country’s socio-economic development through the exploration of its rich coal endowment. Furthermore, it also describes Vietnam’s legal and policy frameworks. In conclusion this study identified that Vietnam has drafted a National Action Plan to implement the Sustainable Development Goals. The country is also taking an integrated approach to implementing the SDGs agenda and that it is assigning responsibility to a variety of ministries to achieve SDGs’ specific targets. Furthermore the country is changing policies and the legal framework in order to facilitating the execution of the work of agencies that are responsible for implementation, regulation and enforcement. In this respect, the approval of the National Action Plan on Sustainable Development Goals is another important step in that direction. While the decision of supplying its internal market with high quality coal helps minimize negative environmental impacts in Vietnam, exporting low quality coal to other countries does not help resolve the problem of CO2 emissions globally. With respect to the 2030 Agenda, this may be considered a temporary solution since to achieve the SDG goals, Vietnam will have to consider other sources of cleaner energy in order to align with the Sustainable Development Goals # 7 on affordable and clean energy.

The work in this paper describes the theory, development and analysis of a computer model simulating a mine operation moving material using concurrent decline ramp truck haulage and skipping practices. This simulation was designed specifically to assess the performance of the truck haulage component and to expand on the scope and capabilities of traditional TKM fleet calculations. Haulage fleet simulation results were similar to TKM calculations for the lower to moderate production rate cases. However, comparisons of ramp-up and high production rate scenarios indicated that the simulation model was significantly more sensitive to operating practices and factors not accounted for by calculations derived when using a single TKM figure. Given the proper calibration of inputs and logic, the simulation model was additionally capable of providing information associated with general mine operations efficiency. Further benefits of the simulation model over a TKM approach included logistical assessments such as production schedule feasibility, productivity trade-off quantifications for proposed operating practices, and the validation of mine resource utilization scheduling. The simulation model was able to expand on traditional methods to approach planning and logistics by considering factors such as truck queuing, real-time traffic interactions, random events, and competition for resources on mine productivity.
