Photovoltaic (PV) system is especially taken notice as one of important renewable energy resources, because PV has potential to provide a certain amount of energy supply as well as without greenhouse gases emission. Considering recent rapid increasing demand for PV system, more expansion of PV system is expected in the future. However, some precious metals and minor metals such as silver, indium and others are used as component materials of solar cell in PV system. Even if energy supply would become renewable, strict limitation of these metals still remain because amount of natural resources and recycling of metals has restrictions intrinsically. The aim of this study is to reveal the possibility of materials supply restrictions for Photovoltaic system quantitatively and to propose several measurements to assess supply risks for materials. Especially, silver supply potential which is used as wire line in PV system as well as PV demand forecast to estimate material use in the future are focused on. We divide underlying supply risk into 5 measurements and analyze them by time series, i.e. price volatility, resource potential, recycling ratio, production type and supply concentration are investigated. Comparing these factors of silver with other metals, the potential of silver supply for PV is presented. In addition to it, we propose another method to quantify country risk applied an insurance pricing model in finance pricing theory and combine it with the supply concentration measurement. As a result, supply risk of silver will increase gradually in the near future because of its resource constraints and supply-demand balances although silver market is sufficiency competitive one. From the country risk analysis, Peru is not only a significant supply country but also has the highest country risk. Some higher risk countries will increase the level of supply risk even if the concentration ratio of supply indicates moderate level.

Two Opposed Interpretations of the Tonopah Structure.-The important geological publications concerning the Tonopah mining-district are those of Spurr 1 and of Burgess.2 In these publications are presented fundamental differences of interpretation, which are the more interesting because both authorities have had ample opportunity for observation, and because both are geologists of proved ability. I was vastly puzzled to know which had the better of it, and in order that I might reach a conclusion in my own mind, I recently spent some time in the district going over the physical evidence. Surprising as it may seem, this evidence looks agreeably conclusive. A review of it will, I believe, be of interest to those who are familiar with the previous publications. The general geological features of Tonopah are shown in Fig. 1, and the differences of interpretation referred to are outlined in the accompanying notes. Briefly, Burgess regards the various rocks as flows, lying in the order of their deposition. Spurr regards them in part as flows, and in part as flat-lying intrusives. The disagreement, then, concerns the rocks regarded on the one hand as intrusives, and, on the other hand, as flows. These rocks are chiefly the so-called calcitic andesite, the upper rhyolite, and the lower rhyolite. While the new Minister of Economic Development sends his apologies at being unable to speak at this Conference, I am delighted to present on his behalf. The Ministry of Economic Development is not only responsible for managing the Crown mineral estate, but also for developing initiatives and policies to promote regional economic development and for managing the GovernmentÆs broader economic development strategy. IÆd like to talk to you today about the critical links that need to exist between these three areas.   I am going to start with a question for all of you. What do these towns have in common? +        Waiuku, +        Thames, +        New Plymouth, +        Nelson, +        Greymouth, +        Arrowtown, +        Reefton, +        Palmerston, and +        Dunedin.   The answer is minerals. These towns were nearly all founded on the back of minerals and mining. In the case of Greymouth it was gold that brought the people to the mouth of the Grey River and it is coal that sustains the town.   In 1870 the town of Shortland had 20 000 people, 90 hotels and was twice the size of Auckland. We now know Shortland as Thames, and of course Auckland is considerably larger. One wonders whether the good folk of Shortland suffered from ætraffic jamsÆ with 90 pubs to navigate between. Gold mining in the Aorere River near Collingwood led early entrepreneurs to develop the land surrounding Nelson as a food basket to sustain the mining population. Nelson is still thriving on this legacy today. The town of Palmerston was founded in 1862 as a stopping point for gold miners heading into central Otago. The gold rush made Dunedin New ZealandÆs first highly industrialised city. Reefton on the West Coast was the first town in New Zealand to have electric lights and in the recent past we were wondering whoÆd be left to turn them off. New Plymouth, and Waiuku are still known as energy and mining centres.   By contrast once thriving towns like Capleston, Canvastown and Blackball are just names on a map now, and at the extreme you have places like Waiuta which has been reclaimed by the West Coast forest. Queenstown was built off the back of the gold rush, but by 1900 with the gold gone, only 190 people lived there yet Queenstown has managed to rebuild itself thanks to some other stunning natural assets. These examples help illustrate three key points that I am sure will each be extensively linked with our minerals and mining industries. First, NZÆs development and that of its regions has been, and continues to be, inextricably linked with our minerals and mining industries.   Second, things change. Sectors, regions and countries must continually adapt and improve if the are to avoid the fate of the Waiutas of this world. And third, the development challenges faced by NZ and its mining industry in the 21st century are vastly more complex than in the past. Governments and industry alike must balance and respond to a range of domestic and international environmental, cultural, economic and other interests and considerations. If you thought of your industry as æjust digging holes in the groundÆ then you may as well simply stick your head in one!

MAJOR battles in the present war have been fought in American research laboratories. Without the outstanding contributions made by our scientists, engineers, and technologists in mining and metallurgy, many of our achievements in the present war would have been impossible. All recognize the fact that modern research has found the answer to problems which seemed insuperable. For the duration, many of these inventions must be maintained as war secrets. But aside from these, the record of accomplishment in peace and war, especially in the past few decades, known to all, demonstrates what scientific and industrial research can accomplish. It may be regarded as axiomatic that the development of modern industry is based principally upon research devoted to making inventions and discoveries. We have come a long way from the sixteenth century, when Agricola published his classical "De Re Metallica:" With our vastly increased knowledge we are now commercially producing dozens of metals entirely unknown at that time. Further, with our modern methods of research and development, a large number of invaluable alloy compositions have been produced. These include numerous age-hardenable alloys, cupronickels, "Everbrite", "Everdur", "Duralumin", "Elinvar", "Hastelloy", "Inconel", "Invar", "Monel", "Ni-chrome", "Ni-Hard", "Ni-Resist", "Permaloy", "Silcrome", stainless steels and irons and other alloy steels, "Stellite", and zinc die-casting alloys.

"Nowadays recycling became an important rare earth elements (REE) source, which allows to reduce their demand for extraction from natural deposits. At present, the used fluorescent lamps and old type TV or computer monitors kinescopes are selectively collected and undergo processing in the system of recycling. It has been estimated, that utilization of such waste would be sufficient to cover the REE demand for the next 5-8 years. In the developed process, the luminophores were separated from the electronic and electronic waste materials, and processed by hydrometallurgical methods to obtain concentrated REE in form of oxides. INTRODUCTIONInternational Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) defines the rare earths as a set of seventeen chemical elements, specifically the fifteen lanthanides plus scandium and yttrium. They are considered the most important indicators of the developed technologies and techniques. Rare earths are used, amongst others, for the production of magnetic and superconducting materials, ceramics, lighting, catalytic converters, advanced electronics and alloys. The demand for RE continually increases, similarly to many other primary raw materials. Globalization, the growing demand for limited resources of raw materials, the policy of the countries controlling the raw material market and the economic crisis became a spur for new programs of socio-economic development of the European Union (EU), with particular regard to EU safety for commodities in intermediary as well as long-term horizons (COM 2008), COM 2011).EU countries import most of metallic and chemical raw materials important for their economy. In 2008 a detailed program named Raw Material Initiative was announced. The increase in demand for most raw materials having special importance for the development of technology, and access to of raw materials security of supply affect the future economies of the UE member states and other developed countries."

In a race to save the planet of its rapidly depleting natural resources, the use of Secondary Raw Materials (SRMs) as replacements in several processes is currently intensively pursued. In fact, this is currently one of the European Union (EU)’s mandates. Valorization of SRMs is consistent with circular economy, where resource efficiency is maximized for the benefit of both businesses and the environment. In line with this mandate, this paper focuses on investigating process phenomena related to hydrometallurgical recycling of Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) dust. In the experimental study, selective dissolution of zinc and other metals is investigated to acquire a recyclable leach residue. Based on the experimental and theoretical investigations, zinc could be extracted from the EAF dust and a recyclable leach residue produced, having chemical composition suitable as a feed material into electric arc furnace.

"Two different instability mechanisms of electromagnetically levitated bodies are analyzed. The first is due to the virtual coupling between the electric current passing through the magnetic system and the variation of position of the body. This mechanism can result in unstable mass center oscillations of a levitated solid body. Another type of instabilities may occur because of the coupling between the motion and the electric currents induced in the body. This effect can cause a spontaneous rotation of the body setting in as the frequency of the alternating magnetic field exceeds certain critical threshold depending on the configuration of the field. This instability can be suppressed by an axial steady magnetic field of strength comparable to that of the levitating field. 1 IntroductionAn alternating magnetic field interacting with eddy currents induced in a conducting body causes repulsion between the body and the coil generating the field. Besides, the eddy currents provide a contactless heating of the body. In such a way metallic samples can be levitated and melted without a contacting crucible. This technique allows to avoid contamination of the melt with container material and so to achieve a considerable super-cooling of the melt before it solidifies. Nowadays electromagnetic levitation is widely used in material research for measuring of the thermophysical properties of molten metals (2) .It has been observed since early fifties when the first experiments on the electromagnetic levitation were done that under certain circumstances solid levitated samples start to rotate or oscillate [l]. Surface oscillations can appear in addition when the sample is melted. Such phenomena are undesirable because they often result in failure of the levitation. Recently we showed that rotational as well as oscillatory instabilities can have electrodynamic origin related to additional eddy currents induced by motion of the body in an alternating magnetic field [3] , [4].In the first part of the present paper we analyze another possible cause of oscillatory instability due to the coupling between the electric current passing trough the magnetic system with variation of the position of the levitated body. The second part of the paper deals with the origin and suppression of rotational instability in a uniform alternating magnetic field."

The extraction and processing of metals and other minerals have played an important role in economic, political, and social development worldwide, from the early stages of prehistory to the present day (Gosner, 2020). In other words, mining has been a fundamental part of human civilization, providing the raw materials necessary for technological, infrastructure, and industrial advances. As society progresses, the importance of mining continues to grow, supporting the development of everything from the smallest electronic devices to the tallest skyscrapers (The Importance Of Mining In Modern Society, 2024). The mining industry is closely linked to a country’s economy and activities related to natural resources. The economy of a nation is connected to its extractive industries (Moreira & McMahon, 2014), which have seen dramatic growth in recent years (Pietrobelli et al., 2018). In a context of increasing demand for natural resources, driven by the development of emerging technologies, the expansion of infrastructure, and the foundation of engineering achievements for the coming decades (Importance Of Mining - Minerals Education Coalition, 2024), mining should focus efforts on global development, requiring a comprehensive approach to sustainability that addresses the planet’s needs and protects the well-being, primarily, of the communities and environments where mining operations take place (Figari, 2024). In these areas, diversity and inclusion should be promoted, thus fostering equitable and sustainable development. Speaking of sustainable development, diversity, and inclusion brings us to an interesting topic: the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, which could serve as a key framework for fostering a strong social management culture in mining. The SDGs were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030 (Sustainable Development Goals, n.d.). Companies have compelling reasons to align their actions with the SDGs, as their long-term success depends on healthy communities. This is a major challenge and requires collaborative efforts (Singh & Rahman, 2021). As Fraser (2021) mentions, achieving more sustainable outcomes may involve mining companies and communities working together collaboratively. This research proposes an innovative approach: Inclusive Mining for Sustainable Development, which aims not only to maximize economic profitability but also to promote social and environmental well-being by integrating the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), primarily focused on diversity and inclusion. This can be achieved through the implementation of a key value-added initiative for mining companies: the Creation and operation of a corporate volunteering program aimed at developing and executing inclusive practices to promote gender equality, the inclusion of local communities and indigenous peoples, and accessibility for people with disabilities. This proposal will educate employees and stakeholders about sustainability and promote concrete actions through corporate volunteering to strengthen the mining company’s commitment to community development, improve social relations, and advance toward achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, establishing the company as a global change agent.

This paper will underpin the future development of intellectuals having greater understanding of patent law and legislation, IP rights, and innovation. To understand this idea, I present a case study of China?s progress in the last 31 years in the rare earth research, innovation, and simultaneously patents area. Rare earth elements (REE) are at the centre of high technology and are the next wave of world innovation. Much of modern society depends on rare earth elements through their use in computers, lasers, telecommunications, iPods, medical technology, military applications, and so on (Long et al, 2010). The rare earth research, a large research body is being provided by Chinese sources. China devoted three or four university centers to the study of rare earths (Lifton, 2009). These measures are all designed to keep China at the forefront of REE production, materials, technology, and innovation. As a result in the last fifteen years there has been a shift from a US-dominated REE industry patents to Chinese patents. The world must identify strategic areas of rare earth innovation and provide funding to firms and universities that conduct such research. Not only research and innovation is vital but filing patents and preserving IP rights for research and innovation is even more important. We (rest of the world) need a comprehensive strategy to guide the development of patent and IP rights for research and innovation. As the amount of construction information used in the growing construction field increases, the importance of efficient construction field management has been growing. Therefore, construction industry have been tried to introduce and conjugate various software and IT technology such as PMIS, Web Camera, RFID, GPS, PDA. However, existing IT technology especially PMIS have not been performed systematically because of difficulty of real time information collection and decision-making from the insufficient handy equipment. These problems make construction manager cannot efficiently respond to diverse condition occur in construction sites. In addition, after the completion, individual who use PMIS have to move another site and use another system so than cannot use information from previous sites. On the other hand, development of IT technology transmute PDA phone for text-based work like schedule management, internet research to smart phone for network based multimedia service. In other words, smart phone is not just IT equipment but new way for overall industry and it can satisfy the demand IT technology on construction sites. Therefore, the purpose of this study is introduce mobile based individual unit PMIS system using cloud computing and SNS which is in development progress. It is expected to be possible to collect and record the real-time information that occur at the site and make rapid decisions based on the recorded information, by converting the office works that are managed based on the site PC or Web, if the site management system that is based on the smart phones and Cloud computing that will be constructed through this research are utilized. After this study, it is necessary to research about interwork with project unit PMIS system and test on real construction site.

Primary steel manufacturers using electric arc furnaces generate one of the largest hazardous waste streams nationwide. The waste stream, known as electric arc furnace dust, is a listed hazardous waste with the designation K061. Oregon Steel Mills, Inc., (OSM) of Portland, Oregon, has implemented a process known as Glassificationn, which uses KO61 as an ingredient in an onsite recycling process. Because OSM was able to demonstrate that the Glassificationm recycling process beneficially uses all toxic constituents in the electric arc furnace dust and that the recycling process produces marketable products, the process is not subject to Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) permit requirements. The marketable products manufactured using Glassificationn include roofing granules, ceramic glazes and colorants, abrasive blasting media and, more recently, synthetic slag fluidizers. The purpose of this paper is to identify the regulatory issues for recycling hazardous waste and demonstrate that OSM glass frit is effective as a slag fluidizer in primary steel manufacturing.

Over the past several years, Somerset International has successfully installed over 20 patented Sub325® Fine Coal Recovery Systems in the United States, Australia, Canada and Russia. These installations recover between 5 TPH and 40 TPH for the host sites. In addition to the increased revenue from the direct recovery of a recirculating load (Screen Bowl “Insurance”, Direct Recovery vs. Indirect Recovery via Recycle, CPSA 2020), host sites have seen benefits ranging from improved operation of refuse equipment to a reduction in the solids content of the refuse streams. As Somerset has improved ultra-fine coal recovery through the introduction of Sub325® Effluent Flotation and, most recently, the Sub325® Effluent Settler™, the amount of coal that has been recovered from these systems has increased by up to as much as 25%. Many host sites have taken a sense of ownership in the Somerset system and consider it to be a critical circuit in the overall optimal performance of the plant. In the past year, Somerset has taken the initiative to expand upon the capabilities of the Sub325® Fine Coal Recovery System, primarily the Sub325® Solid Bowl Centrifuge, to include Refuse Tailings Dewatering to allow for co-mingled refuse disposal. As slurry ponds and boreholes are becoming difficult to impossible to permit and operate, there is a need for a reliable, low-maintenance, continuous operation that can produce a handleable refuse cake. Refuse tailings disposal applications are by no means limited to coal plants and impoundments. Somerset has successfully tested at iron ore and phosphate locations throughout the world and have begun commercial installations. The ability to dewater -325 mesh material, whether it be coal, coal refuse, iron ore tailings, or something else, is a vital piece of processing capability for the continued production of mining operations across the globe. This paper highlights the success that Somerset has had in the coal industry worldwide as well as the initial successes with phosphate, iron ore, and copper tailings (patent pending).

"Rare-earth transition-metal (R-TM) alloys show superior permanent magnetic properties in the bulk, but the synthesis and application ofR-TM nanoparticles remains a challenge due to the requirement of high-temperature annealing above about 800 °C for alloy formation and subsequent crystalline ordering. Here we report a single-step method to produce highly ordered R-TM nanoparticles such as YCO5 and SmCO5, without high-temperature thermal annealing by employing a cluster-deposition system, and we investigate their structural and magnetic properties. Nanoparticles of size = 10 nm are monodispersed (s /d ~ 0.15) and have Hc values at T = 300 K of 8.0 and 4.5 kOe for YC05 and SmC05, respectively. Alignment of the easy axes is performed via a field applied to the clusters before deposition. These processing steps are highly desirable to create and assemble R-TM nanoparticle composites for future permanentmagnet applications.IntroductionMagnetic nanoparticles with high magnetocrystalline anisotropies (Ki > 1 MJ/m3) are required for permanent-magnet, recording-media, and other significant applications [1-3]. In this regard, bulk rare-earth transition metal alloys (R-TM) especially RC05 (R = Y and Sm) crystallized in the hexagonal CaCu5-type structure have shown a large Ki = 5 MJ/m3 (YC05) and 22 MJ/m3 (SmCo5) along with an appreciable saturation-magnetic polarization (Js, > 10 kG) and high curie temperatures (Tc > 1000 K) [2]. The challenges in controlling the size, sizedistribution, phase purity and crystalline ordering, however, limit the research on RCo5 nanoparticles [4,5]. The conventional arc-melting technique requires high-temperature annealing for alloy formation and subsequent crystalline ordering, which causes excess growth and thus results in nanocrystalline powders of particles sizes larger than 30 nm [6, 7]. Low-temperature wet-chemical techniques yield SmC05 nanoparticles of sizes smaller than 20 nm [5], but the control of phase purity is challenging due to the presence of surfactants and formation of other secondary phases [8]."

Bacteria, algae and fungi react to heavy metals in their environment by immobilizing, mobilizing and/or transforming metals. Microorganisms carry out these changes by (1) precipitating metals outside of the microbial cell, (2) binding and complexing metals to the outside of the microbial cell's protective coating, (3) accumulating metals inside of the microbial cell, or (4) transforming metals by oxidation, reduction, methylation or demethylation. Most of these mechanisms are operative in constructed aerobic and anaerobic wetlands for metal's remediation. Several more advanced biotechnologies for metal's removal from aqueous streams have been introduced, but have not been widely accepted commercially.

"Titanium powder is produced from a small fraction of sieved sponge, HDH of sponge or gas blown from a melt produced billet. Ore from foreign sources is chlorinated in a very high temperature fluid bed to make TiCl4, then vacuum distilled purified and then reduced to sponge by Kroll processing. Domestic ores of ilmenite or perovskite can be carbothermically reduced to Ti2OC which can be chlorinated at low temperatures of 250–400°C to produce TiCl4 which can be electrolyzed in a fused salt to Ti powder, or the Ti2OC used as an anode in electrolysis to produce Ti powder. The electrolysis process can be operated continuously to produce Ti powder at a lower cost than Kroll processed sponge including produce control size powder. Electrolysis processing was scaled up and operated at the commercial demonstration stage on a continued basis that verifies the potential of a low cost process to produce Ti powder.INTRODUCTIONTitanium and alloys of titanium powder have been elevated to strategic status resulting from a focus of producing meltless titanium components as well as a feed for additive manufacturing processing. However, the high cost of titanium powder has limited wide scale implementation of using titanium powder as a feed to any process to produce titanium components. Titanium powder free of alloying is available as sponge fines from the Kroll process as illustrated in Figure 1. Titanium alloy powder is much more expensive, also illustrated in Figure 1 produced from an alloy ingot or mil product as the feed and then transformed into powder by one of several melt form processes which accounts for the high cost of titanium alloy powder at approximately $60–150/lb. Ton lots of titanium alloy powder (i.e. Ti-6Al-4V) from one source is quoted at $120/lb. in the U.S. It appears that alloy powder production cost by current processing is not sensitive to volume."

The ninth annual Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division (MPD) student poster contest was held in February at the SME Annual Conference & Expo in Minneapolis, MN. A total of 33 students presented their work at the contest. The competition began in January when the students submitted a one-page abstract for judging. In February, they prepared and presented a poster that explained their research. A panel of judges went to each student and listened as the students explained their research in five minutes. The students worked hard at their research and then set aside time to complete all the necessary steps to enter the contest. The MPD recognizes the effort required to enter and, as a result, provides monetary rewards to all participants. As in past years, there are separate levels of competition for undergraduates and graduates, and the prizes are designated accordingly. At the graduate level, first place receives $1,000, second place $500, third through seventh $200 each, and all others $125 each. At the undergraduate level, first place receives $1,000, second place $500, third place $250, and all others $125 each.

The SDGs were adopted by the United Nations (UN) in 2015 as a universal call to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030 (United Nations Development Programme, n.d.). Companies have compelling reasons to align their actions with the SDGs, as their long-term success depends on healthy communities. This is a major challenge that requires collaborative efforts (Singh and Rahman, 2021). As Fraser (2021) mentions, achieving more sustainable outcomes may involve mining companies and communities working together collaboratively. This article proposes an innovative approach: Inclusive mining for sustainable development, which aims not only to maximize economic profitability but also to promote social and environmental well-being by integrating the UN’s SDGs, primar)ily focused on diversity and inclusion. This can be achieved through the implementation of a key value-added initiative for mining companies: the creation and operation of a corporate volunteering program aimed at developing and executing inclusive practices to promote gender equality, the inclusion of local communities and indigenous peoples, and accessibility for people with disabilities. This proposal will educate employees and stakeholders about sustainability and promote concrete actions through corporate volunteering to strengthen the mining company’s commitment to community development, improve social relations and advance toward achieving the UN’s SDGs, establishing the company as a global change agent.

With the federal climate change legislation in progress, there is a need for demonstration-stage technologies aimed at providing clean energy from coal. Our research aims to experimentally illustrate the feasibility of capturing CO2 on a novel sorbent system from a gaseous stream. The gas is then released resulting in a regenerated sorbent and a pressurized stream of pure CO2 to be used for storage. The proposed sorbent is a ceramic honey-comb structured monolith coated with CaO supported on a high-surface area alumina. CaO is a natural acceptor of CO2 and our design ensures the physical stability and chemical reactivity of CaO over a large number of CO2 capture/release cycles. Furthermore, the use of the monolith ensures a uniform flow through the reactor, minimizes pressure drop across the reactor, and maximizes the surface reactive area. In this paper, we will present the results from a flow-through laboratory-scale reactor that establishes the efficiency of the proposed system to capture CO2. Future applications of the reactor include integration within the new-generation coal gasification power plants, such as IGGC, as means of providing decarbonized electricity.

The Bureau of Mines has designed and built a controlled-environment test chamber specifically for instrument evaluation in simulated work atmospheres. The atmosphere inside the 300-liter stainless steel chamber can be controlled at any selected temperature and relative humidity in the range of 2° to 93° C and 20 to 95 percent, respectively. Instruments placed inside the test chamber are subjected to an atmosphere at a preset temperature and humidity containing various concentrations of toxic gases such as CO, C02, NO, NO2, S02, and H2S. Toxic gas losses resulting from wall reactions, monitoring instruments, and instruments under evaluation are compensated by the use of a dynamic gas blending system.

Iron control and iron residue management and disposal are significant issues in all zinc production processes. This paper briefly reviews the most important primary zinc production routes and discusses the challenges posed by iron control in each of them. The technologies and strategies that have proven successful in controlling and managing iron are discussed. SNC-Lavalin's experience in designing and commissioning zinc plants provides a unique perspective from which to review this aspect of zinc production.
