Newmont has been producing gold from the Carlin Trend for over 45 years. Naturally the focus, scale and complexity of the operations have changed considerably over this time. Newmont discovered and developed the Carlin Main ore body which is located about 32 km (20 miles) north of Carlin Nevada. The property was developed as a one mine one gold mill treatment plant operation which produced about 6,200 kg (200,000 Troy ounces) of dorè gold bars per year. The initial mine, mill and gold refining facilities were relatively small in comparison to today?s standards. The milling circuit used the Merrill-Crowe zinc precipitation process to recover dissolved gold and prepare a concentrated precious metal ?precipitate? to be melted into a dorè bar for sale.

This paper is in two parts. The first covers the evolution of dredging leading to the development of the æNZ typeÆ large dredge and the second, current alluvial gold recovery practice in NZ. NZ was the first country in the world to adapt the bucket-ladder dredge to alluvial gold recovery. Between 1857 and 1907, gold worth (at today's NZ price of about NZ$600/ounce*) over $11 billion was exported û from a country with well under one million people at that time. Over 200 small dredges operated, mostly on the Clutha River, around the turn of the century, however by 1940, only 20 or so large machines remained, and the last of these, the 4000 ton 'Kanieri' ceased operations three years ago. Recently recognition of the superior digging power of the hydraulic backhoe and reintroduction of the simple 'trommel and riffleÆ plant with about 80 m3 /hour capacity has led to a proliferation of static and floating plants, there being at least 50 currently in operation on the West Coast and in Otago. An open pit production planning method for stage mining is presented in this paper. The method brings solutions to the four most important parameters in stage mining : 1) the number of stages, 2) the size and geometry of each stage pit, 3) the mining sequence of the benches in the stage pits, and 4) the time of transition from one stage to the next. The method can also simultaneously optimize the ultimate pit, mine life, and production rate in each stage.

Electrical apparatus because of its flexibility and its adaptability to all classes of service has become essential to the mining industry. Hence the problem of providing electrical equipment that is safe for use in explosive mixtures of methane and air is of prime importance in coal mining. Ilwestigatorsand experiment stations early recognized this fact and much work has been done in the investigation and the development of electrical apparatus for use in atmospheres containing fire damp. The term "fire damp" as applied throughout this bulletin means an explosive mixture of methane and air. Direct-current motors and alternating-current motors of the slipring type when running usually give off electric arcs or flashes that will ignite fire damp. Other 'motors that ha,'e no moving electric contacts may become dangerous through accident, deterioration, or neglect. Auxiliary apparatus such as fuses, switches, rheostats, and controllers may arc, flash, or become heated to snch a degree that fire damp can be ignited. Such equipment is still more dangerous when worn or out of repair. In the United States the development of apparatus for use in gaseous mines has been associated largely with coal-cutting equipment run by electricity. This is undoubtedly due to the use of such equipment at the face of the mine workings, where the chance of igniting fire damp is necessarily greatest. One American manufacturer built a coal-cutting equipment of the totally inclosed type for use in firo damp atmospheres in 1903. Another built similar equipment with special protective devices in 1906, for export. During the years 1910 and 1911, the Bureau of Mines at its Pittsburgh experiment station conducted a preliminary investigation of the safety of such protection as was then in use or under consideration. Five motors were submitted for this investigation, each having somewhat different methods of protection. The results of this investigation were published in Bulletin No. 4G.a

Some years ago, a method was developed to incorporate a grout column around square-shaft helical screw-piles and anchors to increase shaft buckling resistance under compression loading. An additional benefit of this grouted shaft is to increase the load capacity in both compression and tension, depending on the geometry of the lead helical section and the soil conditions. Because of the unique construction procedure, the contribution of the shaft to the total capacity has largely been unknown. The behavior of grouted shaft helical anchors in clay was investigated by performing full-scale axial uplift (tension) load tests on a series of anchors installed at the University of Massachusetts Geotechnical Test Site. In order to isolate the contribution of the grouted shaft to the total load capacity, anchors were installed with a wooden dowel connection between the lead helical section and extension sections on three of the four anchors so that only the shaft resistance would be measured during the load tests. The grouted shafts ranged in length from 10 to 30 ft (3 to 9 m). Initial tests were performed approximately 5½ months after installation. Nearly four years after the initial tests were performed, the tests were repeated to evaluate any significant change in capacity with time and/or repeat testing (preshearing). The soil conditions at the site are presented along with the load-displacement curves for both the initial and repeat teats and a discussion of the analysis of the results. Repeat load tests showed an increase in capacity from the initial testing, however the percent increase was not the same for all depths. The results demonstrate that considerable shaft resistance can be developed in clays from the grouted shafts as might be expected. Depending on the L/D ratio of the shaft and the contribution of the lead helical section, at working loads the shaft capacity can dominate the behavior.

This publication is a revision of the first of a series of four Miners' Circulars originally prepared and issued in 19'29 for use in a course of training designed to prepare mine officials to organize men for rescue and recovery operations. These circulars were revised in 1937 and 1938 and again in 1948. This circular (Miners' Circular 33) discusses mine gases and methods for detecting them. The second of this series (Miners' Circular 34) gives instruction in Bureau of Mines methods of sampling and analysis of mine gases; the third (Miners' Circular 35) describes methods and equipment used for protection against mine gases; and the fourth (Miners' Circular 36) explains procedures used in sealing and unsealing mine fires and in recovery operations after mine fires or mine explosions.

The successful installation of long piles driven into very dense sands relies on the occurrence of the reduction in local friction with increased pile embedment, a phenomenon known as ?friction fatigue?. The underlying mechanisms controlling friction fatigue are poorly understood, with some design methods including an adjustment for the influence of pile diameter while others do not. This paper back calculates the installation resistance of 0.356m to 2m (14in to 78in) diameter open ended piles driven into very dense sands using wave equation analyses. Cone penetration test data are used to link soil properties to installation resistance. The study illustrates consistent interpretation of a variety of case histories of open ended piles driven in very dense sands using newly developed analysis techniques and normalized parameters. Results provide information on methods for incorporating friction fatigue into drivability studies as well as a discussion of mechanisms related to pipe pile installation resistance in sandy soils.

Expert control of grinding and flotation plants has been successfully used in the minerals industry since the 1970?s. The earliest of these systems were written in a hard-coded fashion in FORTRAN, BASIC or Pascal. Second generation systems were built using the first experimental expert system shells that were being developed in the artificial intelligence community. Later systems were deployed in expert systems designed for real-time processing plants that also include the ability to model the process with neural network models and optimize setpoint selection through the use of genetic algorithms. [1,2] In spite of the fact that significant performance increases have been achieved using these systems they are not perfect and can be improved. They suffer from the static nature of their rules and to a degree the process models. There is an opportunity to further increase system performance by systematically taking advantage of the tremendous amount of data produced by the expert system to improve the design, the heuristic rules, the model topologies and the use of the models. Data mining refers to extracting or mining knowledge from large amounts of data where the objective is to automatically analyze, classify and summarize the data to automatically discover and characterize trends in it and to automatically flag anomalies. [3] Clearly, modern process control systems are capable of collecting vast amounts of data. Without a doubt, these data contain important information on the operation of our plants and their ultimate optimization. Coupling the information mined from these data with Expert Control Systems should produce more effective control and greater knowledge of the grinding process and the flotation process. Now, with the advent of effective monitoring of entire minerals plant electric consumption it is possible to not only optimize plant production in real-time it is possible to analyze total plant electrical consumption and incorporate it into the plant control logic thereby improving the overall plant economic performance. This is particularly important with the ever more complex power contracts that plants operate under.

Failure tests on laterally loaded single and pile group are analyzed with a 3-dimensional elasto-plastic finite element program. In the analysis, the mechanical behavior of the ground is supposed to be elasto-perfect plastic with Drucker-Prager's yielding criterion. The nonlinearity of the piles is simulated by assuming a hyperbolic relation between the bending moment and the curvature of the piles. The influence of the axial stress on the cast-in-place concrete piles is also considered in the numerical analysis. It is found that the mechanical behavior of the piles subjected to lateral loading, such as the load-displacement relation up to an ultimately large deformation, and the distribution of bending moment in the pile group can be well simulated.

Among the pile foundations of the 156 tall buildings over 18 storeys in Shenzhen, 86. 5% of them are constructed by slurry drilled piles, bored piles and excavated piles (hand-dug caissons). Based on the experiences of the engineering practices, the paper points out that the main quality problems of pile foundations in Shenzhen are: insufficient bearing capacity of single pile; poor concrete quality of pile; damage of the precast pile; pile tip not reaching the required bearing stratum and the thickness of bored/drilled sediment exceeding the specified. etc. The quality inspection methods that have been used include: check of construction records and excavating; static loading test; core sampling test; non-destructive test, etc. Treatments of quality problems used in Shenzhen are also introduced in this paper.

BACKGROUND OF SURFACE MINING Surface mining refers to the process of removing the material (over- burden) overlying a coal seam and exposing the coal so that it can be loaded out and conveyed by trucks or other methods to the preparation plant or other facility. Surface mining has not always been important in the coal industry. In the early 1900s, almost all of the coal mined in the United States was mined by underground methods. In 1900, about 192 Mt (212 million st) of bituminous coal were mined and less than 1% was mined by surface methods. The development and use of larger equipment has allowed surface mining to gain prominence throughout the years. Table 1 shows the total production of coal by mining method in the United States for ten-year periods since 1920 and indicates the growth of surface-mined coal production. Surface mining will undoubtedly continue to account for a large percentage of the coal production in the US for many years because: 1) The capacity of surface mining excavators has continued to in- crease. Today, mining companies are using shovels (see Fig. 1) which are able to move up to 137.6 m3 (180 cu yd) in each bite and draglines (see Fig. 2) which move up to 168.2 m3 (220 cu yd) in each bucketful. 2) Increasing tonnage from the thick western coal seams is being produced by surface mining methods. 3) Surface mining has normally had lower costs and a better safety record than underground mining. 4) Surface mining normally recovers a much higher percentage of the coal reserve than can be recovered by underground mining. 5) Some coal measures can best be extracted by surface mining

"As opposed to the static functional recovery of existing structures, the construction of infrastructures in an urban environment, when combined with complex geological situations, often involves building foundation structures, whether circular or rectangular in section, through rock formations or chaotic strata (sand and gravel with cobbles). Until a few years ago, these formations or strata were sometimes an insurmountable constraint on traditional foundation installation techniques. The difficulty in overcoming these geological situations is sometimes added to the increasingly frequent need to reach depths that were unimaginable just a decade ago. These are real challenges for those carrying out these works and for those manufacturing the necessary equipment. There are two main methodological approaches to these problems, that can be summed up in the rhetorical figure of ""David and Goliath"": cunning versus force. In reference to the case studies in this article: the permanent retaining walls for the Copenhagen Metro, and the structural repairs to the Arapuni Dam in New Zealand and the Wolf Creek Dam in the U.S., we will describe the foundations constructed in presence of rock using combined small-diameter direction drilling solutions, associated with their enlargement up to the project’s size, at depths exceeding 300 feet. THE heavy shrinkage in the production of bituminous coal has reflected adversely in the matter of tonnage produced by stripping arid mechanical loading machinery. The purchase of stripping and underground loading equipment has likewise been circumscribed. How- .ever a growing percentage of bituminous coal is being loaded by stripping and mechanical loading machinery. This situation is due to the fact that numerous strip pits were able to operate in Illinois and Indiana when under- cover mines were subjected to labor interference, a further advantage gained by their ability to produce and market coal at a price below that of the undercover mines. The mines equipped with mechanical loading. apparatus have enjoyed more continued operation for the double reason that the companies using coal-loading machinery are, generally speaking, more substantial and in better financial condition than many of the smaller properties who maintain hand-loading methods, and the market advantage due to lower production costs also reflects to the advantage of the undercover mines using mechanical loading equipment. Where a number of mines are con- trolled by one company, those not equipped with loading machinery and suffering from higher producing costs have often been closed, with the available tonnage concentrated in the more modernly equipped mines.

The 24th annual survey of the peat industry by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, revealed that 76 producers in 20 States reported commercial production of peat in 1957. In addition to the States that reported production in 1956, Colorado, Idaho, and Wisconsin produced peat in 1957 Forty-four producers reported humus production; 21, reed-sedge peat; and 22, moss peat production. This total exceeds the number of active plants but several producers recovered more than one type of peat. Fifty percent of the total production was reported as reed-sedge peat, 36 percent as humus, and 14 percent as moss peat. About one-sixth of the total production was raw peat, with no preparation other than being air-dried. The remainder consisted of processed peat prepared for use by cultivation, shredding, and/or kiln drying.

At the Armatcuk mine in Turkey, various modifications of sublevel methods have been tried during the last decade in an effort to eliminate gob fires, dangers from roof falls, and surface subsidence, and also to increase extraction efficiency. From the experience thus gained, it was decided that the most likely system to give maximum benefits, considering the existing geological conditions and coa1-seam characteristics, was hydraulic stowing. This paper examines trends in the working techniques of hydraulic stowing and discusses the favorable results and technical problems that the method produced at Armutcuk. The Armutcuk mine, a subsidiary of Eregli Coal Mines (EKI), produces 1300 tons of run-of-mine coal daily from thick (about 10-90 ft) and highly dipping (about 50-90°) coal seams. The coal is highly volatile with good coking properties that make it highly suitable for industrial use. Most of this coal is used in the iron and steel industry at Eregli on the Black Sea coast. Complete recovery of the coal is of vital importance to industrial development and progress. Initial coal extraction was carried out by means of a sublevel mining system modified to accommodate local geological conditions and coal seam characteristics. This method is similar to that employed in metalliferous mines. Several problems arose from the application of the method, one of them being the prevalence of gob fires which caused periodic shutdowns in some sections. To achieve maximum coal extraction with minimum dilution, to eliminate gob fires and surface subsidence, and to reduce fatal accident rates, a decision was taken to change from this method to a hydraulic stowing system. The pres- ence of large deposits of conglomerate and sandstone on the surface contributed to the decision to employ this new method. Although hydraulic stowing practices have been carried out in America and Germany, Upper Silesia may, so far as coal is concerned, be considered the birthplace of the method. Here the process was adapted to thick coal seams on a large scale to reduce dangers from gob fires and damage from surface subsidence. Today, the mining system is not only widely used in the coal mines of France, the Saar, India and Poland, but has also been successfully applied to the iron ore and potassium salt mines in Russia and Germany. LOCATION AND HISTORY The Kandilli-Armutcuk coal field, the most western outcrop of the North Anatolian coal basin, extends for five miles along the Black Sea coast (Fig. 1). The Armutcuk Mine is situated on the southern boundary of the coal field about 40 miles from Zonguldak and about 12 miles from Eregli. The history of coal mining in the North Anatolian coal basin goes back more than a century. Mining commenced on a small scale in the Kandilli-Armutcuk coal field in the late 1880's, and from this time until nationalization in 1940 the mines were operated by private Turkish and foreign interests. In 1940, Eregli Coal Mines was established to takeover the management of these enterprises. The Armutcuk Mine was developed for the first time in the mid-1940's. Since then it has been in continuous production and it now produces an annual 440,000-ton run-of-mine output from which 320.000 tons of salable coal is obtained. MINE GEOLOGY The carboniferous inlier of the Kandilli-Armutcuk coal field crops out over an area about three miles long and one mile wide. The major part of the inlier consists of the Namurian formation with only a relatively small area of Westfalian-A visible on the surface (Fig. 2). Heathgate Resources Pty Ltd (Heathgate) operates the Beverley Uranium Mine in South Australia, located on the plains between the northern Flinders Ranges and Lake Frome some 600 km north of the state capital Adelaide. The uranium orebody exists in permeable sands within the confined, highly saline Beverley aquifer, approximately 125 m below the ground surface and the uranium is mined using in situ recovery (ISR) technology. The Beverley mine is a highly technologically advanced ISR mine and is operated in accordance with stringent safety and environmental standards. The mine is currently licensed to export 1500 t of uranium oxide (U3O8) per annum. This paper outlines the fundamental differences between ISR operations and the more traditional uranium production methods, such as agitation leaching and heap leaching, where the ore is removed from the deposit, stockpiled, crushed, milled and leached on the surface. Solids tailings from either the mill or the heap are finally deposited in a tailing storage facility. ISR mining differs from conventional mining because the ore remains in place underground (in situ) and the groundwater contained in the ore-bearing aquifer is utilised as the mining fluid. This is achieved by drilling into the deposit and installing wells for extracting and re-injecting the groundwater which is fortified with chemicals. The fortified groundwater (ie mining fluid) flows through the permeable sands containing the orebody, dissolving the uranium. The pregnant mining fluid is then collected and transferred to the recovery plant where the uranium is captured (on ion exchange (IX) resin in the case of Beverley). The barren mining fluid is then re-fortified and recycled to the wellfields. Once mining is completed in a wellfield, the surface infrastructure is relocated to a new wellfield, and the mined-out wellfield is rehabilitated to its original surface condition. A comparison of 'standard' hydrometallurgical plants, heap leach and ISR shows a number of key differences, such as the rate of leaching, the level of control available to the operators, and the type of contact/reaction that occurs. While limited in its applications, ISR mining has proven successful at Beverley and provides another mining and processing method for the production of uranium.

Safe and good operation of Søderberg electrodes is dependent upon high quality electrode paste coupled with correct electrode operating procedures. Good electrode performance depends further on proper melting and densification of the electrode paste. The melted paste should form a dense and viscous layer that prevents gasses from the baking process to move upwards. Both paste cylinders/blocks and briquettes can be used, but the procedures may differ between the various types of paste products. For briquette columns the formation of the important viscous layer is obtained through melting and densification of the briquettes. By basic rheological studies of electrode paste and by laboratory tests of briquette beds at isothermal conditions we have achieved a better understanding of the melting process. The effects of temperature gradients, pressure and friction between the briquettes and the electrode casing have also been evaluated qualitatively in pilot scale experiment and in industrial scale tests. The paper shows that melting and densification starts at a considerable lower temperature than the pitch softening temperature. It is concluded that the formation of a briquette electrode column depends on parameters as temperature, briquette column pressure and the friction. Operating conditions influencing the above parameters should be defined and established for each specific furnace operation. Such factors are e.g., charging and slipping procedures, column heating and electrical conditions.

In over ninety per cent of mineral sand plants, the most commonly used equipment is the spiral concentrator. The tonnage treated over typical spiral plants can range from as low as 200 ton per hour up to 6 000 tons per hour. Due to the limited capacity of each spiral, plants consist of multiple spirals assembled into banks. The mixture of minerals present in the sand feed requires several spiral stages to achieve the desired mineral recovery. Due to the complexity of the spiral circuits, there are always some design and operating problems that present themselves in plants. These range from slurry distribution, spirals operating at incorrect design parameters and feed variations. The material being treated is difficult to maintain in suspension due to its high density, resulting in segregation and preferential flow in pipelines, distributors and sumps. The objective of this paper is to highlight common problems associated with spiral installations to designers and operators of plants. Practical solutions are recommended in order to prevent and minimize these mistakes in the design. These solutions may be used to improve performance on operating plants.

A major focus of ground control research presently being conducted by the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is to incorporate data on weak rock masses into existing design relationships, with an emphasis on updating the span design curve for manned entries and the overbreak curve for longhole entries. Both curves were originally developed at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC. The original database has been augmented by information from mines throughout the United States, Canada, Australia, and Europe. The common factor in all these mines is the presence of a weak back and/or walls. In most cases, the ore zone is the weakest rock unit and must be stabilized so that the mineral-bearing rock can be extracted safety. The current NIOSH research attempts to provide rock mechanics tools to assist a mine operator in making economic decisions that will also ensure a safe working environment. This paper documents the Nevada database with a special emphasis on Nevada underground gold mines.
