"By the end of 2000, the first bio-oxidation plant in China that designed by ENFI come successfully into commercial operation in Yantai Gold Smeltery. Its capacity is 50t/d of refractory gold ore concentrate. After the extension, the capacity of bio-oxidation plant reached 80t/d of refractory gold ore concentrate at end of 2001.The refractory gold ore concentrate treated is from different gold mines. After proportionate feeding, the feed typically consists of Au (52.7g/t), S (24.42%), As (3.58%).The bacterial culture used in the bio-oxidation circuit is taken from a mine in south of China, and has been grown over 20 years on a variety of sulfide concentrates in a laboratory of mineral processing, and has shown to be adaptive to growth in a high concentrations of arsenic. It is a mixture of mesophilic microorganisms. The nutrients used in the bio-oxidation process are (NH4)2SO4, KH2PO4, KOH.Before feeding to bio-oxidation circuit, the concentrate would be milled to minus 43µm. The biooxidation product is fed to solid/liquid separation system that consists of a thickener and two press filters, solid from the system is fed to CCD circuit, liquid from the system is fed to neutralization area. The neutralized product is fed to another solid/liquid separation system, and the solid from the system is disposed of on a wasted quarry pit, the liquid from the system is returned to bio-oxidation circuit for reusing."

"INTRODUCTION Mica is found in Georgia from the Fall Line in the central part of the State to the Valley and Ridge Province in the northwest. During the past 3 years, Georgia has been one of the chief producers of dielectric mica in the United States. Since January 1945, when prices were reduced, mining has decreased until practically no sheet mica is being recovered at present.The main mica-bearing regions in the State may be classified into three districts: The Thomaston district comprising Upson, Lamar, and Monroe Counties; the Ball Ground district, comprising Cherokee and Pickens Counties; and the Hartwell district, comprising Hart and Elbert Counties. There are numerous mines and prospects in all of these districts. All have been visited from time to time by engineers of the Bureau of Mines and by members of the Federal Geological Survey. The Federal Survey has made detailed maps and reports on all of the most important ones.This report will deal with five of these properties on which the Bureau of Mines has diamond-drilled.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. A series of liquid fuel fire experiments evaluated the comparative responses of five types of commercially available smoke detectors and a diffusion-mode carbon monoxide (CO) detector under normal and reduced airflow conditions based upon the alarm times of the detectors. These experiments were conducted in the Safety Research Coal Mine at the U.S. Bureau of Mines Pittsburgh Research Center. Two of the smoke detectors had manufacturer set alarms. For the other three smoke detectors, an alarm point was defined in terms of their background analog signal and the detector's electrical output noise under ambient conditions. A correlation was developed of the travel time of 5 ppm CO between pairs of CO detectors with the travel time calculated from entry and crosscut volumes and measured airflow. Based upon the relative performance of smoke detectors in this limited study, smoke detectors can be as effective as CO detectors for mine fire detection once identifiable alarm values are defined. Implementation of smoke detectors as part of an atmospheric mine monitoring system will improve mine safety.

"To adopt new technology advancement in Steel Plant, there is a requirement of shifting of operation process from Coke Wet Quenching (CWQ) to Coke Dry Quenching (CDQ). New CDQ chamber foundation with deep basement and underground conveyor tunnel are to be constructed in an operating plant where heavy foundations and structures are located in close proximity. Furthermore, the existing CWQ system will be in operation during new underground construction and erection. Challenges to deep excavation of tunnel and chamber foundation consist of non-uniform ground condition, prevent washing out of soil from bottom of existing foundations, stability of existing nearby structures, presence of large number of underground utilities, ensuring safe underground workplace to construction resources engaged in new construction work along with project schedule and budget constraints. A combination methods involving use of soil nailing, soil grouting, contiguous bored pile and micro pile had been adopted for protection of excavation sides as well as existing structures. Each side of excavation in different stretches were analysed during design as well as construction stages. The use of combination of all techniques in a single brown field project in context of the nature of site constraints and safety issues made this a unique project.INTRODUCTIONSteel Industry is one of the backbones of industrial growth of any developing country like India. Due to increasing land prices most of the steel plants in India are expanding within their existing plant facilities. In addition to that, there is demand of adoption of new technology for future expansion projects to set new benchmarks with global standards.The property owner had earlier installed a Coke Wet Quenching (CWQ) for their Coke Plant. Now, there is a requirement from process department to proceed with Coke Dry Quenching (CDQ). To facilitate the CDQ within the existing CWQ which will be in operation is the main challenge for the property owner. The second challenge is the limited space for underground construction and subsequent equipment erection within the stipulated time frame.From a geotechnical prospective, the project team had uncertainty and reservations in their mind about the construction methodology. Therefore, the role of three “C”: ‘Consultant’-‘Client’- ‘Contractor’ and their combining brainstorming is essential to freeze a working plan for achieving the goal. In this paper, only the excavation support systems for underground foundation structures have been highlighted in the context of solving geotechnical problems."

"Falcon Concentrators Inc. has developed a high capacity centrifuge for the recovery of fine, free gold as well as other metals and minerals which were previously thought to be unrecoverable by gravity means. Development started in the early 1980's and the first commercial operation was commissioned in 1986. Gold applications include scavenging conventional gravity and cyanidation circuit tailings, cleaning gravity concentrates, cleaning flotation concentrates to melting grade, scavenging flotation tailings, and placer mining. Recent development work by Falcon has expanded the applications scope of the centrifugal concentrator to include many minerals amenable to gravity concentration including iron, tin, industrial minerals, and hazardous wastes. This paper discusses this technology including its history, present applications, and future potential. OVERVIEW OF CENTRIFIJGAL CONCENTRATIONUsing centrifugal force to enhance the separation of materials by differential specific gravity has been researched for over a century. Many attempts have been made to concentrate minerals in high gravity fields. Patents were granted on this subject as early as 1891 (see Figure 1). Patenting activity continued into the 1920's and has been relatively quiet since. It is significant that no centrifugal system of gravity concentration has been broadly accepted by the mineral processing community until recently. Much of the world's reserve of mineral deposits which are amenable to conventional gravity concentration technology (coarse-grained) have been mined and therefore there is an increasing demand for technology which can economically recover the fine-grained gravity recoverable minerals in the remaining deposits. In addition, centrifugal concentration can play an increasing role in solving environmental problems by offering an inexpensive method of concentrating hazardous materials such as uranium, plutonium, mercury, lead, and other heavy metals. The overall cost of disposing of these substances safely can be drastically reduced if they are recovered into a concentrated form prior to disposal."

The past decade has witnessed unprecedented growth in the development and implementation of solvent extraction technology in the extractive metallurgy of nickel and cobalt. Solvent extraction is proving to be a powerful tool, opening new opportunities for simpler, more cost efficient and environmentally sound metal refining processes. These advances, however, could not have been possible without the cooperative efforts between the nickel industry and the people and organizations involved with reagents, materials and equipment development and supply as well as solvent extraction research, aided by the accumulated knowledge and practical experience from the copper and uranium solvent extraction operations. This paper provides an overview of these developments and some of the challenges ahead.

The following report on the structure of copper is the result of work done in the laboratory of the Rome Wire Co. early in 1925. Previous work had indicated to the author that excellent results might be expected if a suitable technique in surfacing and etching could be developed. The resources of the Rome Wire Co. enabled this metal to be studied more intensively than previously, although none of the materials were investigated exhaustively. The material presented is hardly more than a preliminary summary of the most obvious character of the metal; a much longer research would have been necessary to solve many of the pressing problems connected with the casting and working of copper. The Rome Wire Co. has generously released the paper; to Dr. E. H. Darby, technical supervisor of the company, are due particular thanks for his appreciation of the importance of metallographic study of copper and for his effective support in the prosecution of the work and in making its publication possible. Dendrites, Cells and Granules The microscope reveals at least three orders of structural units in copper, as in other metals. The largest structural units are the dendrites —spine-shaped crystals building up the masses of metal when it solidifies from a melt or is crystallized from solutions by chemicals or electricity. The nucleus cells, commonly called "grains," are the largest and most conspicuous units of recrystallized solid metal; the limitations of their growth usually confine their sizes to microscopic proportions, although in "single crystals" they may become as large as the piece of metal itself. The granules are the microscopic fine-structural blocks or laminations that build up the nucleus cells; they are revealed when metal is etched with suitable chemicals. The granules are commonly visible at 500 diameters magnification and are plainly visible at 1000 diameters; magnification of the granular surfaces up to 6000 to 9000 diameters shows no finer units, not because of lack of optical resolution but because the chemical attack has left an unfeatured smooth surface.

"This paper highlights some of the potential application areas of knowledge-based systems in the mining industry. The basic theoretical principles associated with knowledge-based systems are discussed and the justification for mining applications is given. The paper concludes with a brief description of a prototype knowledge-based system applied to scraper selection that was developed at Université Laval on a LISP machine. IntroductionThe beginning of Artificial Intelligence coincided with the conception and development of the first computer systems some thirty years ago. At that time researchers were euphoric about the possibility of modelling the human reasoning process. Soon, however, they discovered that the combinatorial aspect of the set of possible solutions to a particular problem did not permit an in-depth evaluation.In the mid-60s researchers started to look at the heuristic approach because it was more suited to human behaviour with its congnitive abilities (i.e. representing, reasoning, problem solving and advising). The heuristic approach allows possible results rather than exact solutions and it is more rapid and cost effective than the exhaustive combinatorial analysis. The heuristic approach did allow some noticeable progress in the seventies with the development of the first expert system called MYCIN with the objective of diagnosing blood infection diseases."

A hypothetical mining operation model is formulated by the Bureau of Mines, and optimal production and product allocation are determined. The technique of sensitivity analysis is discussed and is used to illustrate the effect of the variability in a mining operation on the optimal production and product market plan.

The information I have concerning the early in situ uranium mining activities in Texas is "sketchy." Apparently, the first test was conducted between 1967 and 1971 in Gonzales County, north of Yorktown, at the Dueterstat Site, by, City Service. Other tests were run in Webb County at the Bruni Site, and in Live Oak County at the Burns and Clay-West Sites in the early 1970's. During this period the Texas Water Quality Board maintained a general surveillance of these tests. In mid-1974, Mr. Glen Davis walked into our Austin offices and requested a permit for Atlantic Richfield's first in situ uranium mine. This permit, issued in January, 1975, was for 3 acres of production, and was the first such permit issued in the United States. It formalized the regulation of in-situ uranium mining in Texas. The 4 years since then have been characterized by growth and change. Today there are 20 permits approved for approximately 2,000 production acres. These permits are issued to 8 companies at 13 sites in 6 counties. There are 7 additional permits being processed, or on the verge of being applied for. These will involve possibly another 2,000 production acres, 3 more companies in one more county.

THE extent of losses, due to evaporation, sediment, and water, in crude oil stored in steel tanks, is a very interesting question, and particularly so at this time, when every reasonable measure should be employed to eliminate all possible losses of this important natural product. Available information on this subject is incomplete; e.g., during the development of the Cushing Field, considerable surplus oil was stored in steel tanks, but from time to time, owing to changes in weather, somelosses by evaporation and short storage room on the leases, these tanks were topped out, thus rendering inaccurate any system designed to determine the average rate of evaporation or other losses of the oil over a given period. , Furthermore, the losses, as shown by the records at the time, as a result of hasty gages, failed to take into account the temperature and gravity of the oil. Losses may be classified roughly as occurring from evaporation, presence of sediment and water, and leakage. The coefficient of expansion and contraction of crude oil, in relation to temperature conditions, is of material importance; also, the rate of evaporation is dependent upon the gravity of the oil, as the escape of the lighter hydrocarbons in fresh Cushing oil, of from 40 to 42 gravity, on a warm day is considerable, and from available records of temporary storage, it is safe to assume that a loss of 1 to 13 per cent. in volume will easily occur in light crude oil of Cushing grade over a period of. 6 months, including the summer season. The presence of sediment, water, and other impurities, in the oil will also cause, more or less deterioration in quality, particularly when the fresh production is run direct from the. gage tanks, or from the wells on the lease to steel storage, as is often the case when an oil field is being rapidly developed. The bad oil will settle to the bottom of the tanks and may be determined by thiefing and running a centrifuge test on the sample. The amount of water in the oil depends entirely on the conditions under which it is produced. Sometimes in large producing wells, with heavy gas pressure, some water may come in with the oil, particularly if the well has been drilled to the top of a water sand. Under these conditions, cut oil is often produced, which, if not settled out, is carried over into the steel tanks.

Aspects of blast vibrations, damage mechanisms and the influence of rock quality on damage severity are reviewed and results presented from a monitoring programme in which the rock mass rating for six tunnels was determined. The peak particle velocity induced in the tunnels during open-pit blasting was measured and the tunnels were inspected visually for fresh damage after each blast. The results suggest that the quality of rock in which an excavation is situated has an influence on the level of ground vibration to which it can be subjected without sustaining damage. This means that the use of a single limiting value of peak particle velocity, as in the blast damage criteria for residential structures, is not ideal and may result in damage to excavations in poorer-quality rock masses

The commonly traded base metals concentrates of copper, lead, tin and zinc are sold by miners to custom smelters using contracts whose terms were generally established at the beginning of the 20th century or even earlier. Technical clauses in these concentrates for items such as payable metals and penalty elements do not reflect current realities of extractive metallurgical technologies and hygiene/environmental issues.It is an axiom that the miners and smelters have a symbiotic relationship. While the existing antique and arcane commercial arrangements serve the purpose of transferring money from the buyer to the seller, they are not likely to result in the industry achieving better overall technical and economic outcomes. By examining the cases for copper concentrates and zinc concentrates in particular, it will be shown that the practical application of these antiquated technical clauses does not drive the miners to produce the better quality concentrates that should be desired by the smelters. This is despite development of mineral beneficiation and hydrometallurgical technologies that would allow the miners to make better products.The adage that any extractive metallurgical problem in the smelter is cheaper to solve in the concentrator still generally holds.While nickel concentrates are only touched on lightly in this discussion because sales terms are more opaque than those for the other base metals, it is expected that the same conclusions will apply.CITATION:Munro, P D and Munro, S E, 2015. U.S. Bureau of Mines researchers reviewed an in situ stress estimate developed from measurements of overcore strain taken at test sites on the 7300 and 7500 levels of the Star Mine near Mullan, ID. Although the field measurements of over coring strain were found to be useful, significant deficiencies were found in the stress estimation procedure. A new stress estimate was developed incorporating statistical methods and an improved understanding of stress concentration factors for interpreting overcore strains recorded by doorstopper' cells. Spatial variability of overcore strains and the implications for stress field variability were explored.

The ‘Metallurgical Operations’ Department of Grinaker-LTA Process Engineering (GLTA) currently undertakes then primary mining as well as the re-deposition of tailings forTicor South Africa (Ticor) at their Hillendale mine near Empangeni, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The mining plant, which was designed by GLTA on a Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) basis, is capable of mining 780 000 tons per month of ROM material which is then pumped to the Primary Wet Plant for treatment by Ticor. Hydraulic mining via high pressure water cannons and subsequent transfer of the heavy mineral slurry at an RD of between 1.35 and 1.48, has never before been undertaken successfully at this level of production on an in situ reserve. The presentation will take the form of a case study in which the unique site operating conditions will be detailed and discussed, as will the innovative process and engineering solutions employed by GLTA to overcome the engineering and production challenges encountered. In order to protect the intellectual property involved in this operation, this paper is fairly general in nature, and attempts merely to provide the reader with a broad perspective understanding of the operation, and some of the difficulties encountered during the early stages of production.

Some Otago quartz veins display spectacular open-space filling textures indicative of shallow formation. Fluid inclusions in some such veins show that fluid immiscibility occured before or during mineral deposition. This immiscibility or 'boiling' occured at depths ranging from about 3 km to within as little as about 100 metres of the paleo-surface. Temperatures of mineralization range from 190 - 250¦C. Metals deposited in these veins include: Au(+Ag), Hg, Sb and As. Hydrothermal alteration is confined to minor silicifation of immediate wall-rock schist, less than about two metres from the veins. These veins have some similarities to classical epithermal systems elsewhere in the world, although wall-rock alteration is much less developed in Otago. From analogy to these classical epithermal systems, it is speculated that gold mineralisation may be found beneath Otago stibnite and cinnabar localities.

Approach Investigate the feasibility of a new mining method--in situ leach mining-as an alternative to conventional mining for copper. Study fundamental leaching technology that will facilitate future commercial operations. Develop guidelines and procedures that will enable mine operators to design and evaluate in situ leach mining operations for any specific copper oxide deposit.

To improve the level of hearing protection by providing workers with an inexpensive, easy-to-use device to check earplug fit. Background Approximately 30 million workers are exposed to hazardous noise on the job, placing them at risk of permanent hearing loss, tinnitus, and other disorders. Although the preferred solution is to eliminate noise through engineering controls or to reduce noise exposure through administrative controls, hearing protectors are critical when noise is unavoidable. Studies of hearing protector users have shown that average protection values in the real world are much lower than the labeled noise reduction ratings determined in laboratories with trained and motivated subjects. Even worse, many hearing pro­tector users get virtually no protection at all because of poor fit. The studies also show that users have a harder time achieving adequate protection levels with earplugs than with earmuffs. It?s difficult for users to tell if earplugs are working well just by looking at them. A more accurate approach is to check how much they block or ?attenuate? noise. Earplugs vary in their attenuation characteristics, with most providing a maximum of 20?35 decibels of noise reduction when worn correctly. Any earplug that?s suitable for use in noisy settings will attenuate noise by at least 15 decibels. Personal fit testing is an effective way to help hearing protector users improve the fit and protection levels of the devices. However, existing fit-testing systems are expensive and unsuitable for use at many industrial worksites.

Both the habit plane of martensite and the orientation relationship between the matrix and martensite platelets of different habit planes have been investigated in binary titanium alloys with molybdenum, chromium, and iron. The effect of the mode of deformation on the martensite habit plane was studied. A micrograph of an exposed mar-tensite platelet is presented. IN the study of martensitic transformation in Ti-Mn alloys,' two martensite habit planes—{334), and {344)8—were reported. The {334), habit was also observed in unalloyed titanium upon transformation,' although there is disagreement with respect to the exact indices. The other habit plane, {344),, has not been reported in martensitic transformation in any other alloys. The present investigation was made to determine whether other binary titanium alloys with P-stabil-izing elements would exhibit a crystallography of transformation similar to that of Ti-Mn alloys. Furthermore, since martensite platelets can be induced by deformation under certain conditions, it was of interest to investigate whether the mode of deformation, compressive or tensile, would influence the formation of martensite platelets on a specific plane in an alloy system which possesses two martensite habit planes. Experimental Procedure The material used for the preparation of the binary alloys of iodide titanium with molybdenum, chromium, and iron had the following purities: 99.99 pct iodide titanium, 99.9 pct molybdenum, 99.423 pct chromium, and 99.9 pct iron. The compositions of alloys listed in this paper are in nominal weight percentage. All specimens used were prepared and treated according to the procedure described in reference 1, unless stated. For the subzero temperature treat,ment the following experimental schedule was followed. After specimens had undergone the grain-growth treatment, they were quenched into an ice-water bath and were then metallographically examined. In specimens of higher alloy content, no martensitic transformation was observed. In those in which mar-tensitic transformation did occur, only specimens in which the martensite platelets existed as fine needles in localized regions were used. All specimens were reannealed 17 hr at 1200°C, quenched into ice water. and the capsule was broken. They were held in the ice water for from 5 to 10 sec, then transferred to a liquid-argon bath. This stepped quenching procedure was found to be more efficient than direct quenching into liquid argon. In the latter case, as soon as the hot specimen was immersed in the liquid argon, a protective, insulating layer of argon gas formed, and the specimen continued to glow vividly in the bath for some time. In the study of the habit behavior of martensite produced by deformation, specimens were deformed at room temperature either by compression, tension, or rolling. Martensite habit planes were determined by the two-surface analysis procedure described in reference 1. A stereographic net of 153/4 in. diam was used throughout the investigation. The method for determining the orlentation relationship between martensite and the matrix follows that used by Greninger and Troiano.' In the synthesis and sintering processes to obtain superhard materials, such as diamond and cubic boron nitride, deformable ceramic capsule is used as gasket to transmit and support the required high pressures and high temperatures, HPHT. The ceramics materials for these capsules should have special physics and chemical characteristics such as refractoriness, shear strength and compressibility. In this work, Bridgman?s anvil made of hard metal or speed steel was used to characterize some ceramics materials in terms of their maximum compressible thickness. Tests were also performed with different resin polymers used as binding mixture with ceramics powder. Chemical analyses and investigations through scanning electronic microscopic (SEM), X-ray and real tests for the synthesis of diamond were also performed. The results showed that local Brazilian calcite can be successfully used in the manufacture of HPHT gaskets.
