This report describes Bureau of Mines experiments in gasifying coal in a helium-heated tube-coil reactor. The purpose of this work was to investigate helium as a medium for transferring heat from a nuclear reactor to gasify coal or for use as high-temperature process heat. A laboratory-scale system was designed and constructed to demonstrate feasibility. In preliminary tests with this system, in which the coal was fed as a water slurry, the helium-heating and recycling equipment operated well. Considerable difficulty was experienced, however, in preheating coal slurry to the desired range of 400° - 1,000° F. without plugging the preheaters. Five different preheaters plugged with coke or with salts leached from the coal. The longest operating period wan 12 hours. These difficulties were partly due to the relatively small equipment and flow rates. The gasifier processed l pound per hour of low-rank coal at 300 p.s.i.g. and 1,800° F., with the carbon conversion limited to 20 to 30 percent by the short residence time and slow heat-transfer rate.

This study was planned to present salient facts of the California and Nevada sulfur industries and to indicate existing opportunities for increased economic utilization of California and Nevada sulfur resources. Numerous publications on sulfur have been issued by the Federal Bureau of Mines, including Information Circular 6329, Sulfur, by Robert H. Ridgway (1930); annual Minerals Yearbook chapters on Sulfur and Pyrites, by various authors; and a chapter on Sulfur by G. W. Josephson in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 556, Mineral Pacts and Problems (1956). This literature, however, deals primarily with the national and international sulfur situation and does not attempt to analyze the possibilities for increased economic development of sulfur resources by individual States. The present study attempts to analyze these possibilities in California and Nevada and to (1) evaluate factors that have influenced production and consumption in California and Nevada and (2) indicate apparent trends in production, consumption, and prices in these States.

"Subway Line Number 4 is one of the newest additions to the Rio de Janeiro subway network. Built for the 2016 Olympic Games, the 16 km (10 mi) subway line connects the south of the city, with the famous beaches Copacabana and Ipanema, to Barra da Tijuca, west of the city, where the Olympic Village and Park are located. This new line, which is estimated to cost USD 2.2 billion, is composed of six new stations: Jardim Oceanico, São Conrado, Gavea, Antero de Quintal, Jardim de Alah (JA) and Nossa Senhora da Paz Station.Brasfond participated in the construction of foundations and retaining structures for all the stations, and each presented unique challenges. This is not surprising considering the difficulties present in a highly-dense urban environment including utilities, nearby buildings, traffic limitations and noise.Of all the stations, JA Station was the most challenging to construct. It was located in the middle of an avenue between residential high rises supported on shallow foundations as well as below sea level in sands with high groundwater. The other five stations were located in small parks and squares, with no buildings in the immediate proximity.The interaction between designer, owner, and the general and foundation contractors during execution was key in safely reducing the construction schedule. This was significant given the unforeseen construction delays the client, Linha 4 Sul JV, faced due to permitting, utility and traffic relocation so that the owner could fulfill their final goal: making the line operational by the Olympic Games. The GeologyGeologically, the state of Rio de Janeiro is formed by Pre- Cambrian crystalline basement rock. Its geological formation is very old and comprises two major orogenic cycles, a Mid-Precambrian formation, called “Transamazonian” (Proterozoic Era), and an Upper-Precambrian to Cambrian called “Brasiliano” (Proterozoic-Paleozoic). The soil structure of the city of Rio de Janeiro is represented by a core of crystalline rocks, usually granite-gneiss, covered with a layer of residual soil and/or partially weathered rock.JA Station is located in a Rio de Janeiro neighborhood called Ipanema, between the Atlantic Ocean and Lagoon Rodrigo de Freitas. Local geology is composed of a superficial soil, consisting of medium to coarse grained sands. Top of rock varied significantly from 20 m (66 ft) deep on one side of the station to 33 m (108 ft) on the other. Water is at a depth of 3 m (10 ft)."

This report comprises a brief outline of the experimental cracking of natural gas in a water-gas generator at Louisville, Kentucky, and a discussion of the results obtained. The work was done under a cooperative agreement by the U. S. Bureau of Mines with the Louisville Gas & Electric Co. The re-forming or partial cracking of natural gas is not a new process, but one which has been employed in the manufacture of city gas for a number of years. However, the apparatus used heretofore was not a water-gas generator containing a bed of ignited fuel, but instead it was a plurality of connected chambers containing spaced and arranged checker bricks, with means for heating the bricks and for admitting the natural gas. The procedure previously followed was quite different from that used during the tests at Louisville; likewise the results obtained were different. It is not uncommon for companies distributing natural gas to provide gas-generating equipment for producing manufactured gas which is used, mixed with natural gas, during periods of peak demand. Because this equipment is idle much of the time, in some instances being in use only for a few days a year, some of the gas companies have considered using it, during off-peak periods, in the manufacture of some gaseous products and for carbon black which might he produced and marketed with profit. There is one plant of this kind at Louisville. Kentucky. Its maintenance in condition ready to be operated is necessary because of the limited supply of natural gas and because of the variation in demand. The engineers of the Louisville Gas & Electric Co. considered in particular the possibility of cracking natural gas in a water-gas generator by injecting the gas into the incandescent fuel bed, thereby producing a gas comprised largely of hydrogen (H2) and carbon black, an appreciable amount of which is entrained in the gas as it leaves the generator, Because power and gas are available at low prices, Louisville was believed to be a satisfactory location for a plant which could use hydrogen. It was evident that this method of treating natural gas might directly benefit the gas company by: 1. Lowering, the cost of manufactured gas.

The study area, which comprises 28,443 acres within the Jacumba Wilderness Study Area, is in the California Desert Conservation Area, and along the U.S.-Mexico border 25 miles west of Fl Centro, CA. The U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluation of mineral resources is based on examination of mining claims, known mineral occurrences, and mineralized zones during the fall of 1983. Limestone resources were identified inside the study area; tungsten resources may he present. Metasedimentary rocks intruded by Cretaceous Quartz diorite predominate in the study area. Tungsten and some gold have been found in skarn zones along intrusive contacts; limestone deposits are in the pre-Cretaceous rocks. Tertiary and Quaternary volcanic flows, pyroclastic rocks, clay beds, and diatomite in lake deposits nave been investigated for possible non-metallic resources. Evidence of mining or prospecting was found at 26 sites in or just outside the study area. In 1983, 106 claims were held in 13 claim groups. One claimant was sporadically prospecting for gold on claims in the north part of the study area in 1983, and gravel was being mined from alluvium 1/4 mile to the east.

Cylindrical samples of pure titanium were subjected to uniaxial compression at room temperature, leading to the formation of three generations of twins. Many primary contraction twins were observed as the initial texture was favourable for their formation. Numerous secondary extension twins formed within the primary contraction twins and some tertiary contraction twins within the secondary extension twins. The orientations of these three generations of twins were determined by electron backscatter diffraction techniques and their associated Schmid factors (SFs) were calculated. The formation of the twin variants selected in each generation and the absence of certain potential variants are accounted for by rotating the twinning displacement gradient tensor expressed in the twin system reference frame into the crystallographic reference frame of the relevant neighbouring grain. The presence of the observed primary, secondary and tertiary twins is explained in terms of the ease of imposing the required accommodation strains on the neighbouring grains. By contrast, certain first, second and third generation potential high SF twins were absent because their formation would have required accommodation by the most difficult deformation mode: pyramidal glide.

An open pit rock structure usually contains geological planes of weakness. They are formed by joints, faults, bedding planes, fractures, and cleavages. Rock slope failures often occur in the form of sliding of rock blocks along a plane or several planes. Such a rock block has three- dimensional geometry, and consequently a vector method of analysis has been found useful in evaluating its stability. Rock blocks of a tetrahedral shape with one free surface have been analyzed by Londe. Rock blocks formed by sets of parallel joints have been analyzed by Wittke. The present chapter presents the analysis of rock blocks formed by planes of weakness of arbitrary orientation, and of three-dimensional geometry.

he cathodes produced are of electrorefined grade; metallographic structure and surface roughness are controlled to a depth of 1.3 cm (single-side deposits); silver levels in the cathode are regulated by the presence in solution of Cl- and Br- ions; organics must be used at very low concentrations (around 0.1 mg/l with a consumption of about 0.01 mg/l/hr). The required concentrations of additives were established according to a well-defined strategy based on the consumption of organics at the cathode by a mass transfer limited-process.

"Noranda's Brunswick Mining Division, near Bathurst, New Brunswick, processes 10,500 TPD of complex Cu-Pb-Zn bearing ore. Brunswick uses conventional rod and ball milling techniques to achieve a flotation feed size of 75% passing 400 mesh. Over a two year period, testwork was performed using a Marcy pilot plant ball mill to assess the impact of several key variables on secondary grinding efficiency. Four graded mill charges were used to compare balls and slugs at 25 and 29 mm sizes. Data was evaluated by determining grinding rates using a commercially available steady state simulator. Results were critical in Brunswick's efforts to achieve finer grinds while minimizing cost per tonne.IntroductionBackgroundThe Brunswick orebody is an extremely fined grained volcanogenic massive lead, zinc, copper, silver, iron sulphide body between two metamorphosed sedimentary and felsic volcanic rock units. Pyrite content is about 60% with 20% non-sulphide minerals, mainly silica and chlorite.Size reduction at Brunswick is performed by three separate parallel lines consisting of rod mills, primary and secondary ball mill circuits, all in series. The line 3 grinding circuit is presented in Figure 1."

Quality problems in continuous casting of steel can be identified as they occur by monitoring mold signals (level sensor, thermocouples in the mold walls, friction etc.) and taking appropriate action (such as slowing casting speed, changing taper, changing a clogged nozzle, or later visual inspection of the surface for possible downgrading. Surface depressions and groups of deep oscillation marks form at meniscus and reduce local heat transfer as they move down the mold at the casting speed. This slows shell growth, increases shell surface temperature, and causes characteristic dips in mold thermocouple signals. More importantly, they are also associated with longitudinal cracks. Characteristic thermocouple signatures have been identified for many defects, including sticker breakouts, transverse depressions and deep oscillation marks, narrow-face bleeds, transverse comer cracks, longitudinal cracks, mold level fluctuation defects, and other problems. With the help of computational models, these mold signals should be used to troubleshoot defects, and to take appropriate corrective action. "The ore-element patterns in regional lake sediment geochemical survey data from four areas of Newfoundland containing granite-related mineralization reveal characteristics which can be used to identify mineralized granitoids. The St. Lawrence Granite with its fluorite deposits, the Ackley Granite with molybdenite mineralization, the Grey River tungsten lodes and the newly discovered Mo- W mineralization at Granite Lake, Central Newfoundland, have all been included in the regional lake sediment geochemical surveys, which now cover about 90,000 km2 of the Island of Newfoundland. The lake sediments over these mineralized granites show diagnostically high values of Mo, F, Pb, Zn and, in three of the four cases, U, together with locally high Ag and Cu values. Furthermore, these ore-metals display a distinctive zoning pattern about the intrusives, which can be related to the classical ore-metal zoning patterns developed about many types of mineralized granitoids.IntroductionGranitoids in Eastern Canada are receiving renewed interest as potential hosts of tin, tungsten, uranium and related mineralization. Although a number of mineral deposits and showings have been known from a few granites (sensu lato) in the region for many years, granites had generally received little attention as potential hosts of metallic mineralization until the recent resurgence in interest in the mineral potential of these rocks. In Newfoundland, where granitoid rocks underlie about 30070 of the land area, petrologic data are available from some granites, particularly those in eastern Newfoundland (Strong et al., 1974; Strong, 1980), but in southern and southwestern Newfoundland the data base is sparse, and indeed in many cases individual plutons are not delineated on the geological maps of the area . Most of the available data on Newfoundland graniotolds have been summarized by Strong (1980), who gives a general assessment of their mineral potential by comparing their physical, mineralogical and petrochemical attributes with mineralized granites elsewhere in the world."

Since the initial start-up, the Toyo Smelter & Refinery has been operating in harmony with the ambient environment, and improvements have been implemented with technologies specifically developed for further protecting the environment. Toyo Smelter & Refinery is now planning to increase the copper production capacity from 280,000 tpy to 450,000 tpy, over a period of several years. In 2003, the first step of this smelter expansion and modernization plan was implemented. The production capacity of the P-S converter was increased dramatically, as it became possible to operate under a ?2 hot-2 blowing? schedule. In 2005, an additional converter will be installed, in order to allow operation under a ?3 hot-2 blowing? schedule. This report will describe the technical improvements on the P-S converters, as well as describe the Toyo expansion program and discuss the technologies applied to the fugitive gas collecting system.

"INTRODUCTION The need for an accurate and precise analytical method for determining moisture in coals of high water content has been recognized by the coal industry as well as the fuel technologist. Interest in this particular phase of coal technology extends back to the early work of German investigators on the brown coals of Central Europe. Studies by these workers led to the establishment of a direct immiscible liquid-distillation method 4/ as the accepted moisture determining technique in European laboratories. Direct moisture determining methods, those methods that utilize various techniques to drive off the water from a given sample of coal and either collect the water in a calibrated receiver or selectively trap the water driven off in a suitable absorber, have found little favor in the United States. They have been treated merely as research tools.5/ The problem of moisture determination in low-rank coals of the United States has not been given much consideration because such coals contribute only about 2 percent of the total United States production. With renewed activity in low-temperature carbonization and with the growth of interest in coal and coal-tar hydrogenation, the American coals of lover rank containing 20 to 40 percent bed moisture will be subjected to extensive investigation. If the low-rank coals of the United States are to be accurately appraised, the need for qualitative and quantitative analytical proceeded becomes more pronounced. These coals, especially the lignites of Texas and North Dakota, are highly susceptible to oxidation, a process that proceeds to a greater or less extort when low-rank, high-moisture coals are treated by oven-drying methods. The extent of this atmospheric oxidation has been described and evaluated by numerous workers. 7/In many respects, the problem of moisture determination in low-rank coals, those found in the United States and the high-moisture coals of Central Europe, is similar. Conversely, the problem of moisture determination assumes a different aspect when the coals of the eastern and the middle-west sections of the United States are considered. Present methods, the loss in weight gravimetic-type procedures, serve adequately to test these low-moisture coals. The determination of moisture in coals containing 20 to 40 percent water should be approached from a direct method rather than from an indirect gravimetic-type procedure because of the oxidative tendencies of these coals and the demonstratrated inability of a loss-in-weight technique to remove all the water in a given sample of coal."

Off-grade molybdenite concentrates, mainly derived from secondary sources as by-products of the processing of copper, uranium and tungsten ores, do not satisfy the purity requirements (percent MoS2) for the production of molybdenum bearing products. This investigation is a continuation of a successful effort to refine a low-grade molybdenite concentrate to prepare a high-grade MoS2 using a mixed acid (HF + HCl) leach procedure. Specifically, this investigation is concerned with an understanding of the separation chemistry underlying the removal of the oxide/silicate gangue and the base-metal sulfide associations present in the low-grade molybdenite by their selective dissolution in the two acids. Experiments were conducted on an off-grade concentrate containing 42.6% Mo. Results of the controlled dissolution tests indicate that both HCl and HF are suitable for the removal of the associated alumina and both work well for iron, nickel and copper. However, HF was found to be the most effective for dissolving silica/silicate and magnesia. An attempt was made to rank the leaching efficiencies of the acids used singly, sequentially or in a mixed mode. Scale-up (300 to 2,000 g) experiments were conducted to validate this approach. Excellent purification of the concentrate was possible by processing the off-grade concentrate with 10% HCl plus 15% HF at 363 K for 7.2 ks in open polypropylene reactors with internal stirring. These conditions leached practically all of the oxide and silicate gangue and 96% of the metallic impurities. Starting from the low-grade molybdenite concentrate (42.6% Mo; 71.1% MoS2) it was found feasible to obtain a refined product containing 97.8% MoS2, which is suitable for industrial use.

Coal, America's most abundant fossil fuel, is expected to play a key role in our pursuit of energy independence. A substantial increase in coal exploitation will be required if we are to fulfill our future energy needs. It is essential that new developments continue if stable coal prices are to be achieved and maintained. The challenge of the mining industry is to continue these developments in the face of problems related to increasing labor costs, inflation and environmental restoration. With expectations of increased activity in surface coal mining, the U.S. Bureau of Mines has authorized this study to determine the preliminary economic and technologic feasibility of underspoil haulage in area strip coal mines and to identify geologic and geographic areas where such a system could be used. These objectives were met by literature search, data-gathering visits to several active area strip mines and by analyzing various haulage systems that were superimposed on three model mines. Potential advantages of such a system include: 1) improved mine design; 2) lower mine operating costs; 3) improved land reclamation; 4) lower manpower requirements; 5) lower mobile equipment requirements; and 6) smaller, less sophisticated maintenance facilities.

The obligation of an employer to the State requires certain things of him as matters of good citizenship: for instance, that his workmen shall have a living wage, that child labor shall not be employed, that injuries from accidents shall not make workmen a charge upon the State, and that the laborer's children shall have opportunity for education and to become good and useful citizens. Affairs of this kind are not taken up as philanthropy, for the officials of a corporation or a large manufacturing concern may not feel at liberty to spend the funds of their company as prompted simply by motives of kindliness; but they may spend company money on such matters because it is good business. For years, the poisonous effects of lead, phosphorus, and dust have been emphasized in books on industrial hygiene and their elimination has been urged; but the more important and everyday physiology of the workman himself has been neglected. Part of my object in writing this paper is to show how our knowledge of physiology may be applied to working conditions in everyday life. In the interest of industrial laborers, accident compensation laws have been enacted in 33 States. This has been carried forward rapidly, because it has been shown that it pays both employer and employee. A further step is the recognition of sickness and disablement independent of accidents, not only because of their immediate cost to the worker and to the employer, but because continued efficiency in work and business depends largely upon health. Some measure of the importance of health in industry can be gained by the knowledge that records kept by some companies which now make this the subject of careful inquiry show that the time lost by employees, through illness, is several times as much as that lost as the result of industrial accidents. It is true that accidents frequently result in permanent disability or death, but it is equally true that illness is also a cause of permanent disablement or death. Thus the chief difference is that the loss to the employee through accidents occurring in the course of his employment is now generally recognized as a cost

Around 90% of the chromite resources of India are concentrated in the Boula-Nuasahi Sukinda belt of Orissa state. In order to conserve these valuable ore resources strategically, several companies established chrome ore beneficiation plants in this region. The general beneficiation process in these plants consists of gravity unit operations such as Floatex density separator, spiral, wet shaking table etc. Most of these gravity circuits suffer huge losses of valuable minerals in the tailing. Any attempt towards decreasing these losses would not only increase the limited reserves in India but also make the economics of the operations more attractive. Apart from the liberation phenomena, in many of the operating plants considerable quantity of values are lost in the tailings, due to inconsistent feed quality, inappropriate selection of operating and design parameters. Mineral engineers in this regard have to play a proactive and continuous role to improve the performance of all separating units by modifying even small changes based on tests conducted in laboratory under controlled conditions followed by attempts to make necessary changes in the plant. For such improvements, accurate data collection and proper data interpretation followed by making necessary change which is implementable in an operating plant play a very critical role in performance of the circuit. Databank collected over a period of time under various conditions would also help in overcoming the future problems related to either variation in the feed characteristics or specific demand by metallurgical industries. The above concept was adopted in one of the operating chromite beneficiation plant at Sukinda. The approach adopted and practical problems encountered during the study were reported in this paper. The result of trial campaign has shown that, an overall product assaying 30.2% Cr2O3 from the feed (18% Cr2O3 ) can be produced to in single stage. Mine planning includes equipment selection as a subprocess because aging equipment must be replaced to maintain or improve productivity levels. The criteria used for decision-making in mine planning and equipment selection are often inextricably linked and inherently contradictory. For example, financial wisdom demands that development, which is an expense and locks up capital, be deferred as far into the future as possible yet on the contrary technical knowledge suggests that developing well ahead of stoping is practically desirable because it generates additional geological information required to improve planning of the unmined portion of the orebody and create better operating flexibility. Consequently, mine planning professionals have to delicately balance all decision criteria when executing mine planning in order to achieve optimal mineral extraction or when selecting equipment, so that capital is optimally deployed. These two processes can therefore be characterised as belonging to the multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) type of problems. MCDA problems are alternatively referred to as multiple attribute decision-making (MADM) problems and belong to a broader group of problems called multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM). There is now a gradual recognition and application of MCDA techniques in the minerals industry. This paper explores the theory, current and potential application of these techniques in decision-making in the minerals industry.

This phenomenon is well-known at temperatures above the melting point of aluminum,3"6 whereas in this paper the transformation was studied at temperatures lower than the melting point of the aluminum matrix.
