GEOPHYSICS differs from geology and physics in many respects. In the first place, geophysics is a complex science embracing the fields of seismology, geomagnetism, geoelectricity, geodesy, meteorology, volcanology, physical oceanography, physical hydrology, tectonophysics and exploration geophysics. Geology is also a complex science and so extensive in its various fields that no one can master them all, and no part of geology deals in any sense with several of these fields of geophysics. In the second place, geophysics makes use of methods and instruments that are derived primarily from the science of physics. Geology, on the other hand, has methods of its own and it draws its borrowed techniques and its instrumental equipment not only from physics but also and perhaps primarily from chemistry and biology. The difference, therefore, between the geophysicist and the geologist lies partly in the phenomena that are observed, partly in the methods and instruments with which each carries on his exploration; but partly also, and perhaps principally, in the habitual attitude of mind and in the background of specialized training with which each approaches the problems presented by this planet of ours. The geologist as such, therefore, is no geophysicist. On the other hand, the physicist is not a geophysicist either. Isolation of each problem in a closed laboratory system under complete control is fundamental to the methods of the physicist. The geophysicist must apply physical instruments and physicomathematical reasoning to the study of physical quantities in their undisturbed natural environment. What, then, is a geophysicist? In the sense that he is a trained expert in all of the geophysical sciences, I do not believe that such a person ever existed. It would be beyond the possibilities of a single lifetime. I think there is confusion in our ideas and in our use of terms. We are not all thinking of the same thing when we say geophysics or geophysicist; yet we seem to talk as though we were. It is as absurd to say that the whole of geophysics belongs to geology because the field of a particular type of geophysicist-the exploration geophysicist -calls for some knowledge of geology as it would be to say that the whole of biology belongs to geology because a particular type of biologist-the paleontologistneeds some knowledge of geology. DEVELOPMENT OF A GEOPHYSICIST Since it is impossible to become an expert in all the fields of geophysics, and since students entering college seldom know the field they will choose as a career, what would we suggest as the best general preparation for work in geophysics, whether as a meteorologist, an oceanographer, a seismologist, a geodesist, a geomagneticist, a volcanologist, a tectonophysicist, a hydrologist, or an exploration geophysicist? Fluidized low-temperature carbonization of coal, a recent development, offers a possibility of reducing fuel costs of coal-burning electric ?generating plants. The Research Council of Alberta have built a pilot plant and are conducting a programme to -develop a carbomzation plant for Alberta sub-bituminous coals which will produce char suitable for use as a .boiler fuel, and tar of a potentially high value as a ?chemical raw material. The economies of the process as a whole, and the value of the tar, have yet to be assessed.

Canada's gypsum industry began over two hundred years ago in the Maritime Provinces when farmers attempted to supplement their incomes by selling "land plaster" to traders bound for the United States. Rising from such humble beginnings, gypsum now contributes significantly to the economies of nine of Canada's ten provinces. Thirteen open-pit and three underground mines produced a total of 8.38 million tonnes of crude gypsum and seventeen processing plants manufactured 2.49 million tonnes of finished products in 1985. Recent economic growth in North America has resulted in steady increases in gypsum production, however, competition from foreign producers and by-product gypsum poses a growing threat to Canada's gypsum mining industry.

I have lately had occasion to conduct a campaign at the works of the Empire City Company, in Railroad District, Elko County, Nevada, which, if not highly satisfactory, was at least very interesting in a technical point of view, and which I therefore think worthy of communication to the Institute. The lead ores in this district occur in lenticular masses along and near the contact of crystalline limestone with a dioritic porphyry, and consist of argentiferous carbonate of lead and galena, the latter occurring in solid blocks, or in ribbons running through the limestone. Associated with these are silicate, carbonate, and suboxide of copper, and brown and calc-spar. Adding to this, that the proportion of galena in the ore is small, and that no iron pyrites exists in the district, it is at once evident that the ore-mixture is difficult to treat. For a successful reduction by smelting, it would be necessary to introduce into the charge: 1. The proper quantities of sillphur-bearing ingredients, to effect a complete separation of copper and lead; and, 2. Sufficient silica and iron oxide, to form with the lime and magnesia of the ore, a slag of the required fluidity. The first condition could be fulfilled only very imperfectly, there being no iron pyrites in Railroad, nor in the surrounding districts. The nearest occurrence is in Battle Mountain, whence a supply could not be procured in time. The second condition, i. e., the addition of iron ore and quartz, was easily complied with, there being an abundance of these materials in the vicinity. The furnace of the Empire City Company, is a small shaftfurnace, with an area of hearth of six square feet, and is supplied with blast by a NO. 4 Root blower. In spite of this small size the furnace smelted during this campaign, which lasted 31 days, an average of 28 tons of ore, and 13 tons of fluxes, together 41 tons of charge, per twenty-four hours. The following tables give the complete data in regard to the smelting process, and the results obtained:

THE world-wide continuation of low prices for zinc in 1934 has militated against any striking changes in the position of the metal. The price of zinc in London at the end of the year, about £11 5/8 per long ton, or 2.5c per pound at the existing rate of exchange, is more than 25 per cent below the average price for last year. In these circumstances probably the most significant event of the year was the putting into operation of the new electrolytic plant of the Giesches company at Magdeburg, Germany. This plant is designed to have an initial capacity of 20,000 long tons per year, and it is planned to increase this to 40,000 tons annually. This development is significant not only as indicating a continued swing of zinc metallurgy towards electrolytic methods, but also because it will make Germany virtually independent of foreign sources of zinc. This will mean that the zinc tonnage normally exported to Germany from Belgium and Poland will. become available for other markets, and it is feared may lead to lower prices unless the production of Bel-

In this paper, major attention is given to misfires in mines where electric multiple shot-firing is the system used. Misfires are sometimes caused by one action or condition and at other times by a combination of two or more. They may be divided into two classes: (1) those caused by workers in the mines, (2) mechanical or manufacturer's causes. The second cause will be discussed first. Misfires Caused by Faulty Detonators The important part of an electric blasting cap, to the user where multiple shot-firing is done, as in the steep-pitch, thiek-vein, anthracite mines, is the bridge wire. In single shot-firing this factor is not apparent, but in mines where multiple firing is done any variation in the resistance of the bridge wire, where full or even rated battery capacity is required, will most likely cause a misfire. The reason for this is obvious. If the resistance in the bridge wires is not the same, some of the detonators will fire because of their greater comparative resistance. Variance in resistance of bridge wires is caused by a slight difference in the diameter of the bridge wire, also by a difference in the composition of the bridge wires. Again, where the bridge wires have become rusted, there will be a variance in resistance. About the year 1922, one of the large coal companies was greatly alarmed by the number of serious and fatal accidents caused by misfires. The general manager issued an order that these accidents must be greatly reduced, and if possible, entirely prevented. The officials at the mines had to determine the various causes of misfires and have them corrected. The rock contractors who use large quantities of 60 to 80 per cent. explosives and do all firing electrically were thoroughly instructed as to the proper methods of doing their work, and closer supervision was given to their work. The manufacturer's representatives stressed the importance of the use of galvanometers; accordingly these were purchased and used. Larger firing lines were installed under the supervision of a demonstrator of the company manufacturing the caps and explosives. However, misfires again occurred and it was evident that the source of the trouble was not wholly

The production of soda ash from natural sources is one of the United States' oldest industries. The London Company, which financed the settlement of Jamestown, in the fall of 1608 exported in its first cargo from Virginia " . . . trials of pitch, tar, glass, frankincense, and soap-ashes."1 This last product, a crude mixture of sodium and potassium carbonates obtained by the burning of wood in iron pots, was the commercial soda ash of its day, used in the infant soap, glass, and bleaching industries. Besides having a good cash value, its production helped to clear the land, and it was a compact, easily shipped commodity. The extra high potassium content of these American "pot-ashes" gave them an added market as a fertilizer, a field that they dominated until the opening of the Strassfurt deposits in 1860. This form of natural soda ash disappeared forever from commercial importance with the introduction of the Le Blanc process (1791), and later the Solvay process for manufacturing soda ash. The Solvay process was rapidly accepted in the United States, and has accounted for most of the country's soda ash production since 1884. It was not until the western part of the country began to be developed that natural soda ash was again produced. A number of lakes, playas, and springs west of the Rocky Mountains were found to be rich in this mineral, and climatic conditions were ideal for its easy recovery by solar evaporation. The production of natural soda ash from these deposits has become a steadily growing industry in the United States. Production A summary of the production and value of natural sodium carbonates in the United States is presented in Table 1. Prior to 1927 the principal output came from several different companies at Owens Lake, California. Then production at Searles Lake, California, began to [ ] increase until it became the most important source. In past years the exploration of the oil possibilities of Colombia has been confined to parts of three distinct physiographic provinces; namely, the coastal plains area near the Caribbean Sea, the Magdalena Valley and the upper reaches of the Maracaibo Basin near the Venezuelan border. During 1935, little exploratory work and no drilling was carried on on the coast, but there was considerable activity in the other two areas. In the Magdalena Valley, the Tropical Oil Co. continued its producing and development operations on the De Mares Concession. The Socony-Vacuum exercised the option it acquired in 1934 on Sr. Luciano Restrepo's concession adjacent to the Tropical property and north of the Sogamoso River. No wells have been started on the Socony's lands although, according to the terms of the lease, drilling must be started within the next two years. West of the Carare River and adjacent to the Tropical's southwestern boundary, the Sociedad Nacional del Carare denounced the lands formerly held by the Union Colombiana, whose lease automatically lapsed during the year owing to the company's failure to comply with its drilling obligations. In the same area, the concessions held by Callejas et al. and the Société Européene des Pétroles are also understood to have lapsed for the same reason. Holdings of other interests in the Magdalena Valley were inactive during the year. Near the upper part of the Maracaibo Basin, the Gulf, through its subsidiary the Colombian Petroleum Co., continued active exploration and development on its Barco concession. Colombian Petroleum Co.—The following information and that presented in the accompanying tables relating to the activities of the Colombian Petroleum Co. was supplied through the courtesy of Mr. E. S. Bleecker, chief geologist of that company. Four wells were completed during the year on the north Petrolea dome, where an attempt is being made to define the limits of the field. On the south end of the Petrolea anticline, one well, Petrolea No. 3, which might be classed as a wildcat, encountered a heavy flow of salt water immediately below the oil zone and had to be abandoned. Sublevel stoping was first developed in the Michigan iron mines many years ago. Since that time this method, and modifications with long hole drilling, have been used in a number of non-ferrous mines and have been described in various papers and articles. With a few exceptions, the operations where sublevel methods have been applied are producers of large daily tonnages from ore bodies of considerable size. In selecting mining methods for small properties or relatively small detached ore bodies, sublevel methods often have been overlooked. The method has been used successfully in relatively small operations at Copper Canyon, Nevada, and, more recently, in mining small ore bodies at Darwin, Calif. As a result of this experience, we believe that a review of the general procedure, the advantages noted, and the results obtained will be of interest to many operators of relatively small mines. General Description Briefly, sublevel stoping consists of, first, driving sublevel drifts at predetermined vertical intervals through the length of the stope block; second, breaking an initial mining slot across the stope; third, driving crosscut benches from each sublevel by slabbing into the slot; and, fourth, breaking the ground between benches. Applicability Since this is an open stope method, it requires wall rock that will stand over reasonable stope lengths without caving or excessive slabbing. Ore must be moderately firm but need not be hard. The method is best adapted to steep dipping, tabular or lenticular ore bodies but may be applied to ore bodies of almost any shape if their vertical extent is appreciable. It can be used with dips that are too flat for successful shrinkage stopes and can be modified for use with slushers on dips below about 40". Initial mining at the Copper Canyon operation consisted of sublevel stopes for the wider ore sections and shrinkage stopes for the narrow sections where ore widths averaged about 15 ft. After some experience and a study of comparative results on completed stope blocks, sublevels were substituted for shrinkage stopes even in the narrow ore widths. Practical stope lengths depend upon the character of the walls and the continuity of values within the ore body. Where blocks of low grade or waste are included in the stoping limits, these areas can readily be left as pillars for intermediate wall support and longer stope lengths may be planned. Raises can be spotted in narrow or low grade areas and stope lengths adjusted accordingly. Stoping Details To illustrate stoping details, assume that we have an ore shoot 15 to 30 ft wide and about 200 ft long, with walls that would stand over a stope length of 80 to 90 ft (Fig1). PRELIMINARY DEVELOPMENT Preliminary development for sublevel stoping would be simple. Platinum-group elements (PGE) are preferentially associated with chromian spinels, including high-iron chromite, magnesian-chromian hercynite, and chromian magnetite in clinopyroxene-rich upper stratigraphic portions of the Tonsina ultramafic complex in southern Alaska. Ratios of Pt:Pt+Pd are proportional to chromium content in the associated chromian spinels. The maximum PGE content of geochemical rock samples from Dust Mountain is greater than 20.000 ppb (>0.6 oz/ton) with minor gold values. The maximum PGE content of tabled chromite concentrates is 3.430 ppb (0.1 oz/ton) at Dust Mountain. 1.029 ppb (0.03 oz/ton) at Sheep Hill, and 1,749 ppb (0.051 oz/ton) at Bernard Mountain. High-iron chromite at Dust Mountain yields tabled chromite concentrates with Cr:Fe ratios between 0.5 and 1.2. Lower PGE contents are found in more chromium-rich chromitites from Sheep Hill and Bernard Mountain that yield concentrates with Cr:Fe ratios between 1.0 and 2.8. Platinum-group minerals include amalgams. arsenides. PGE alloys, and sulfides. These minerals are between 3 and 40 microns in size and are concentrated along grain boundaries and fractures of metasomatically and hydrothermally altered chromian spinel grains.

Case story: Steel producer ArcelorMittal Eisenhüttenstadt GmbH in Germany uses Primetals Technologie’s new stock yard logistics system in its finishing department. An exact image of its slab storage at any times is given by the warehouse logistics system to the company. It not only enhances the composition of the stacks of slabs, but also automates recording of manual restacking operations. Therefore the solution improves workflows and simplifies stock control. Cycle times have also been reduced due to the fact that the slabs can be charged to reheating furnaces ahead of the rolling mill due to less restacking operations within the slab storage. The expandable, modular system is based on the Siemens Simatic IT and Primetals Technologies’ IT4METALS Logistics product platform. It provides a large number of organizational and commercial features in the form of sophisticated graphics and tabular evaluations. For example, it can show how many crane movements have been made per shift for any category of slab, so that the time and cost for each operation can be calculated accurately.

Drill cores from uranium roll-front deposits, hosted in lower Cretaceous strata, were examined from the proposed Dewey Burdock in-situ uranium recovery site in the northern part of the Edgemont uranium district, South Dakota. Uraninite (UO2), coffinite U(SiO4)0.9(OH)0.4, and doloresite (H8V6O16) occur as pore-occluding cements within the Fall River Formation in the Dewey area. In contrast, within the Lakota Formation in the Burdock area, uranium (with very little vanadium) is absorbed onto woody fragments and amorphous carbonaceous material in pressure-solution seams. Both areas have typical uranium roll-front mineralogy with 0.5 wt. % pyrite in the reduced solid phase and no pyrite in the oxidized solid phase. The groundwater at the ore zone is not oxygenated, so the uranium is relatively insoluble. Uranium in solution in ground waters is <10µg/L at Dewey and <22 µg/L at Burdock. Micromineralogic and geochemical data are being used to understand water/rock interactions, uranium distribution and movement, and as input factors for predictive reactive transport models.

The current trend of increasing augered cast-in-place (ACIP) pile diameter, length, and load carrying capacities demonstrates improvements in installation equipment, increased acceptance, and that quality control is being successfully implemented by the parties involved in the ACIP pile construction process. Quality control is essential for ACEP piles since 24- to 36-in-dia (610-to 915-mm-dia) piles are currently being constructed to sustain design compressive loads of 800 to 900 kips (3555 to 4000 kN). This paper presents a summary of ACIP pile quality control procedures and methods beginning in the design and bid process, through ACIP pile installation, to post-construction. The results of a recent survey of contractors, engineers, equipment suppliers, and researchers routinely involved with ACIP piles in the United States, Europe, and the Middle East are included to address current trends in ACIP piles and quality control.

The solvent extraction technique is the only industrial way used to separate and purificate yttrium from other rare earths. In order to improve this process several extractants have been tested during last years. In this work, the behavior of sec-octylphenoxy acetic acid (CA-12) in Yttrium recovery from high concentrated heavy rare earth mixture was investigated. Sodium hydroxide solution was used in order to presaponify organic phase composed by CA-12 and Tributyl phosphate (TBP) diluted in kerosene. In the investigated condition, TBP confirmed its role of phase modifier not significantly altering the extraction behavior of CA-12. The CA-12-TBP system showed a high affinity in extraction for lighter rare earths such as Sm, Eu, and Gd, leaving yttrium in aqueous phase. Using a feed concentration (P [RE]) of 1 M, organic mixture is capable to extract around the 70% of metals in a single extraction test showing this extraction sequence Y < Lu < Yb < Tm < Er < Ho < Dy < Tb < Gd < Eu < Sm. Moreover for [CA-12] = 1.79 M and [RE] = 2 M the instability of extraction system occurs.

Introduction Until recently, there were many jobs for mineral engineering graduates. Traditionally, minerals-related career paths available to university graduates stem from rather standard offerings in the disciplines of mining, metallurgy, petroleum, geology, geophysical engineering, and mineral economics. Within each discipline, there exists many career opportunities. In fact, until fairly recently, the most difficult decision for most graduates was choosing among all the available alternatives. Unfortunately, this relative state of euphoria changed quickly and dramatically within the minerals sector. Within two or three years, graduates from minerals-related engineering disciplines found it exceedingly difficult - and then almost impossible - to secure employment in the minerals sector upon graduation. At the same time, there were dramatic reductions in production requirements and, ultimately, mine closings. This resulted in massive layoffs and often termination of professional personnel possessing significant and valuable industrial experience. Obviously, this worsened an already bad employment picture for those hoping to begin a career in minerals. Certainly, there is no universal agreement on what the future offers for the US minerals industry or the career opportunities associated with it. However, there are a number of considerations that deserve study by students, faculty, administrators, and industrial personnel before minerals-related career paths are chosen. Where Will the Jobs Be and How Many? Everyone is aware that the minerals industry is very cyclic. It is not surprising then that job opportunities for new graduates also fluctuate. Typically, there is a two-to-four year lag between industry&apos;s engineering manpower needs and the academic community&apos;s ability to produce this talent. Due to the response lag, there will necessarily be years when supply and demand do not match. Employment Projections It is extremely difficult to anticipate what the key career paths might be within the next few years. Considerable speculation remains with respect to whether activity in the US minerals sector over the short-, intermediate-, and long-term will improve, remain status quo, or further deteriorate. However, some information pertaining to the prospects for career opportunities in mining engineering was offered by Tingley and Ghose (ME, Sept. 1983, p. 1274) from a study performed by Fenvessy and Schwab. Results from this industry-sponsored survey suggest that the US will experience 700 more mining engineers than needed in 1985, 1300 in 1990, and 1800 in the year 2000. These conclusions were based on the assumptions that future graduate levels remain flat and demand increases 3.6% annually. Educators quickly argued that depressed job markets, coupled with university student mobility, would negate the assumption of flat mining graduate levels in the immediate future. Student Mobility Student mobility from one engineering discipline to another is high. This is perhaps best demonstrated by the tremendous growth in programs such as computer engineering and computer science at the expense of enrollments in the more traditional engineering programs. The ability and willingness of students to quickly change engineering disciplines in response to existing and perceived job market demands have created significant student, faculty, and resource dislocations within universities nationwide. This has resulted in problems for university faculty and administrators responsible for effective use of

RISKGATE is an interactive online risk management system developed by the Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre (MISHC; University of Queensland) to assist the mining industry in implementing continual improvement in management of major unwanted events so maximising health and safety performance. A comprehensive body of knowledge has been compiled from diverse mining industry experts for risk management of tyres, collisions, fires, isolation, strata underground, ground control open cut, explosions, explosives, manual tasks and slips/trips/falls. This paper presents an overview of the RISKGATE body of knowledge captured specifically for the management of unwanted events that stem from the handling and use of explosives (drill and blast) within surface coal mining operations. The knowledge presented is divided into a series of initiating events (listed below) within which there are further degrees of classification based on design, operation, and management concerns. Initiating events: ? Loss of control of explosives and associated chemicals in storage on site ? Loss of control of explosives and associated chemicals during transport ? Loss of control of explosives and associated chemicals during manufacture ? Loss of control of explosives and associated chemicals during handling and blast operations ? Loss of control of explosives and associated chemicals during disposal The system guides the user in generating substantive and leading-edge controls to assist in the design, management and reporting of drill and blast operations to meet stringent internal and external requirements. From a broader industry perspective, RISKGATE provides an environment for knowledge capture and knowledge exchange to drive innovation and best practice in the identification, assessment and management of risk. By capturing operational knowledge from industry experts, RISKGATE provides a cumulative corporate memory at a time of high personnel turnover in the coal industry.

"Electricity as a means of transmitting power was introduced in coal mines of the United States about 1891 for both haulage and coal cutting, only a few years after electrical haulage was first installed on street cars. At first, the hazards of electrical ignition ere not appreciated and the general use of open lights and black blasting powder made the possibility of electrical ignition of fire damp seem small by comparison.5 The possibility of igniting coal dust directly by electric sparks or arcs had not been considered.In the nine years prior to 1900, the progress of introducing electricity underground was slow, except that it was used for lighting shaft bottoms. Electricity had to contend with the more general use of compressed air for coal-cutting machines and, in mainline haulage, with the use of mule-teams and endless and tail-rope systems. During this period, great improvements were made in electrical apparatus, in surface installations as well as in mines. By 1900, therefore, the technique of applying electricity in mines had so far developed that it rapidly drove out the use of compressed air in coal mines because of the comparative ease of its installation and the marked economic advantages of its use over that of compressed air in practically all kinds of mining machines except percussion. rock drills.At this time, however, little thought was given to the hazard of indiscriminate use of electricity causing explosions and fires, and the possibility of electricity causing direct ignition of coal dust had not been considered. On December6, 1907, however, the Monongah, West Va. mine explosion occurred. This was the greatest mine disaster this country has over had, 361 men being killed. Although: there was much diversity of opinion, as to the origin of the explosion, many well-informed engineers concluded that the cause was ignition of coal dust do to wreckage of a runaway trip in a rope haulage entrance slope. This slope also served as a ventilating and it extended from the level of the coal bed to the surface. The runaway trip tore down electric cables and stirred up a cloud of dust when it was wrecked at the bottom of the slope. The dust was probably ignited by the electric arcing that occurred when the wires were knocked down. (Another but less probable source of ignition was the open flames of miners lamps.) From the foot of the slops the explosion appeared to have travelled into the mine, spreading as it went. If this ignition of coal dust was the origin of the explosion, it occurred on pure intake air entering directly from the surface."

CHILEAN mining in the public mind is rightly associated with copper. Chuquicamata with its great hill of copper-bearing granodiorite as well as Sewell and Potrerillos with mineralized volcanic necks together can supply a good proportion of the world&apos;s normal necessities of that metal. Chile is an extremely long and narrow country, averaging only 109 miles wide. Its eastern frontier is the Andes and it is on the western slopes of these mountains that the great copper deposits have been discovered. West of the Andes a great longitudinal depres sion has permitted accumulation of nitrates and other soluble salts in the arid north; in the north center it is hidden by a series of cross ranges, but in the center a moderate rainfall makes it the country&apos;s most important agricultural region. In the south this depression is drowned and gives rise to a series of straits and fiords. This enormous cleft in the earth&apos;s crust is separated from the sea by a coast range of moderate elevation which in the south is represented by a series of islands and mushroom-shaped peninsulas
