Approximately 30 million pounds of tungsten trioxide in the form of ferberite concentrates have been shipped from Boulder County. Since 1940, the production has varied considerably, being affected by the emergency needs of World War II and the Korean conflict. During World War II, attempts to stimulate production were made by the Metals Reserve Company by stabilizing the price for a specified period, the Reconstruction Finance Corporation by small mining development loans, and the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey, who cooperatively explored some of the district by surface and underground core drilling. During the Korean conflict and continuing through the first half of 1954) tungsten production was being stimulated by a Government-gauranteed price and by financial assistance loans under the Defense Production Act of 1950 to qualified operators of properties that have merited exploration. This combined program has increased production in Boulder County from about 1,900 pounds in 1949 to an estimated 383,000 pounds of tungsten trioxide in 1953. The 1953 production came from 67 properties. One of the problems confronting producers is the need for improved beneficiaton methods. Ores from the area have not been amenable to flotation concentration and gravity methods have resulted in poor recovery, often less than 70 percent.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Geological Survey of Wyoming, and U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM), will produce an estimate of the amount of available coal in an area about 55 Ian (35 miles) south of Gillette, Wyo., where the Wyodak coal bed is 8-27 m (25-90 ft) thick. Available coal is coal that actually is accessible for development under current regulatory, land-use, and technologic conditions. Local coal-development considerations include roads, ranches, railroads, pipelines, power lines, wildlife and archaeological sites, alluvial valley floors, cemeteries, and the Hilight oil and gas field and gas plant. Some of these considerations would be mitigated so that surface mining may proceed; others presently preclude mining in their vicinity.

Advanced remote sensing can be a powerful new information tool to help private and public entities make better environmental and resource management decisions. However, some regulated entities are reluctant to develop or use this tool because of their concerns that it will lead to increased risks and costs of environmental legal liability. They fear that new ways of monitoring the environment will increase liability, undermine existing enforcement agreements, reopen compliance agreements, and generally provide a competitive disadvantage to early adopters by accelerating environmental cleanup costs. Others counter that the increased risks are marginal, and that several advantages outweigh these risks, including the opportunity to more effectively manage environmental operations, target and set priorities, measure and track management and compliance effectiveness, provide more defensible environmental assessments and baseline conditions, make and defend optimal siting decisions, and avoid or resolve environmental disputes. This paper offers strategic advice on ways regulated entities can enjoy the benefits of these powerful new information tools while mitigating down-side legal and compliance risks as much as possible.

R. H. Sweetser, Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. (communication to the Secretary*):—The recent work of furnace No. 1 of The Algoma Steel .Co., at Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, using for fuel, first all charcoal, then a mixture of charcoal and coke, and finally all coke, upsets the estimates given by Mr. Hall in the last two paragraphs of his interesting paper. Furnace No. 1 was built for a charcoal-furnace, and it was run on charcoal fuel from March 6 until July 9, 1905; then, for a week, a mixture of charcoal and coke was used, and, since then, coke alone has been the only fuel. It is to be regretted that at no time, during the run on charcoal, was there enough charcoal on hand and " in sight" to warrant blowing the furnace as hard as it should have been blown. During April and May the supply of charcoal limited the amount of blast to about 8,000 cu. ft. of air per min.; in June, to about 8,900 cubic feet. For a few days in July about 10,000 cu. ft. were blown, and then the maximum daily output, 173 tons (2,240 lb.), was reached. At all times the quality of the charcoal was poor, having been made from wood cut from three to four years before. Doubtless this furnace could have produced 200 tons of iron per day, even with this quality of charcoal, provided the supply had been sufficient; and with

A program of geochemical till prospecting, carried out by Derry, Michener & Booth in 1974, was instrumental in t~ e discovery of a copper deposit in Currie Township, Ontario, beneath thick lacustrine deposits of the Abitibi Clay Belt. The prospecting system involved the continuous collection of glacial sands and gravels beneath the clays, using a track-mounted, dual-tube rotary drill, and the separation and geochemical analysis of the heavy mineral content for Cu, Zn, Pb, Ag and Au. In one of 22 holes drilled down-ice from nine Canadian Nickel airborne EM conductors, fragments of chalcopyrite-bearing graphitic argillite, assaying 12% Cu, were recovered from a 14-foot gravel section beneath 83 feet of clay. Ultimately, mineralization was identified in 10 of 11 additional holes drilled up to 3,000 feet down-ice from the Currie deposit. The glacial fan, when compared to the 1,200- by 165-ft area of the subcropping mineralization, is at least 20 times the area of the deposit and is the result of glacio-fluvial reworking of the mineralized ground moraine. The Currie deposit is contained within a Keewatin succession of graphitic argillite, dacite tuff and graywacke, which is intruded by dacite and feldspar porphyry sills and dykes and truncated by a Keweenawan diabase dyke. Grade and thickness of the mineralization, which lies chiefly within the argillite, is related to felsic intrusives and hydrothermal alteration, and to fold hinges.

Information Circular 6746 reviewed the fatalities in Indiana coal mines. for the fiscal year October 1, 1951 to September 30, 1933. Since then Indiana has changed its fiscal year to the period July 1 to June 30, but as most statistical data on accidents are arranged according to calendar years, the data in this paper are for the last 3 months of 1932 and the calendar year 1933, rather than for the new Indiana fiscal year. Tables 1 and 2 list the fatalities in Indiana coal mines3/ by cause and occupation for the last 3 months of 1932 and for the calendar year 1933. The fatalities for the small wagon mines employing fewer than 10 men are separated from those employing 10 or more men to call attention to the ex- tremely high fatality rate in small mines, largely because the State mining law does not apply to them nor do they come under the jurisdiction of the Indiana mine inspectors; as a result health and safety conditions are ex- tremely bad. During the last 3 months of 1932, 5 (approximately 42 percent of the total) fatalities occurred in the small mines, while for the calendar year 1933, 12 (approximately 32 percent) of the fatalities occurred in them. The Indiana Division of Mines and Kining estimates that these small mines have an annual production of approximately 325,000 tons, or about 4.5 percent of the total coal-mine production of the State. In other words, for these small mines the fatality rate per tons mined during 1933 was about 10 times as great as for the mines employing 10 or more men. Another lamentable feature in connection with the fatalities in small mines is that very few carry any compensation insurance and the owners are not worth enough financially for dependents of victims to collect anything under the common law; as a result, the dependents of those killed usually are left penniless and subjects of public charity.

"As part of the mining engineering curriculum, students are required to be placed in industry for vacation work or work-integrated learning (WIL). In this paper we review work-based placement as done at the four South African mining schools: the University of Johannesburg, the University of Pretoria, the University of the Witwatersrand, and the University of South Africa.Key aspects of past and current WIL (pre- and post-graduation) practices that may need attention are highlighted for consideration by all universities that provide professional qualifications. Work-directed theoretical learning, problem-based learning, project-based learning, workplace learning, and simulated work experiences are discussed as legitimate approaches to WIL.Regardless of the choice each institution makes, commitments of universities, preparedness of university teachers, and the desire for equity and excellence will play an important role in the provision of WIL.DefinitionsAccredited Qualification: a qualification awarded on successful completion of an accredited programme.Advisory Boards (or Committees): are essential infrastructure for a WIL curriculum that is built on the integration of the workplace and the university. This requires the collaboration of experts from both environments. Thermoelectric and metal alloying applications have changed the status of tellurium from oversupply to under supply . In a search for new sources of this element in Arizona , Colorado , New Mexico , Utah , and neighboring states , the Bureau of Mines analyzed more than 200 samples and obtained the results of tellurium determinations by private companies on more than 500 samples from a wide variety of mineral - bearing deposits . The About 40 minerals containing tellurium have been reported , mainly tellu- rides of gold , silver , bismuth , mercury , lead , copper , iron , and nickel . minerals usually occur in small quantities and identification in ores is extremely difficult . Samples containing more than 0.1 percent tellurium were taken from the Hilltop and Memphis properties in Dona Ana County , N. Mex . , and the Silver King property in White Pine County , Nev . , where development was chiefly for base metals . The Lone Pine mine in Catron County , N. Mex . , and the Bambolla mine near Moctezuma , Sonora , Mexico are potential sources of native tellurium occurring in small but high- grade pods . Much of the production of tellurium has come as a byproduct of electro- lytic refining of copper and lead- zinc ores in Arizona , Colorado , New Mexico , and Utah . Base -metal ore deposits will continue to be the most important pri- mary source of tellurium , although the concentration in ores is nearly always less than 10 parts per million . Any significant increase in output of tellu- rium probably will be related to production and improved efficiency in smelt- ing and refining base - metal ores .

This paper is intended to call attention to the manifold uses of limestone in industry; to indicate the types of limestone desired by some of the large consuming industries; and to give some information on the resources of limestone in Canada, so that an idea may be obtained of the present and future possibilities for limestone production. The word limestone is used in the usual broad sense to include both high-calcium limestone and the highly magnesian variety known as dolomite, as well as all intermediate types. Lime is simply calcined limestone, and in this general paper its uses have been included with those of raw limestone. It is of interest, in dealing with this subject, to glance back over the early history of the utilization of limestone, for by so doing we see that limestone has been of importance to mankind since the beginning of civilization and has contributed in no small measure to the development of a number of the arts and sciences. One of the first uses, if not the first use, of limestone was in connection with the making of lime for plastering purposes. This use antedates civilization. In the day of the ancient Greeks and Romans, the art of plastering had been brought to a state of perfection that is not nearly approached by the modern artisan.

The computer aided mapping of lead concentrations in soil has been carried out around the Doe Run (formerly AMAX-Homestake Lead Toilers) primary lead smelter near Boss, Missouri, through a cooperative Missouri Research Assistance Act program between the lead industry and the University of Missouri. As a part of this research a sequential extraction method was also developed to analyze and determine the various species of lead in the vicinity of the smelter as to possible sources which would suggest pertinent environmental control measures. Practical applications of this data-based scientific approach will be presented.

Keywords: modified coprecipitation method, Ni-Co alloy powders, solid-solution oxalate, growth mechanism Homogeneous solid-solution oxalates of Ni2+ and Co2+ ions were synthesized by modified coprecipitation method and the composition and morphology of the fibrous solid-solution oxalates precursor were characterized by XRD, IR, DTA/TG and SEM analysis. The effects of feeding methods, pH values, precipitation temperature, reactant concentration, addition surfactant, alcohol washing and drying process on the morphology and dispersion of the precursor were investigated in detail. The experimental results showed that the coprecipitated powders have characteristics that are different from those of the mechanical mixtures with the same stoichiometry. Based on the observations of precursors growth and SEM morphology of the precursor, the oriented attachment was proposed for the well-aligned growth of the fibrous Ni-Co alloy precursor particles.

This paper will describe the experience gained and explain the deductions made from the phenomenon of the great squeeze which occurred at Brule Mines. The first indication of the commencement of the squeeze was the breaking of posts on the high-side rib of the slope. At first we thought this was due to a lateral pressure only, and we renewed the broken posts with new ones, the result being that the new posts also were soon broken. A noticeable bending and breaking of the collars occurred, with a corresponding reduction in the height of the haulage slope. These symptoms were also evident on the counter above the slope, indicating that the trouble was of an exceptional nature. In the meantime, we had concentrated a large force of repair men, renewing broken timbers and brushing the roof and floor, but in spite of all our efforts we could not overtake the damage being done. Our next problem was to find the cause of this trouble. We were in a new basin of coal (No. 2) which had only been opened a few months, as we had worked the previous four years in another basin (No. 3) where no such trouble as this had ever been encountered. Naturally our first thought concerned the adequacy of the size of the pillars. We had worked in the No. 3 south basin for the previous four years. without any such experience, with 60-feet pillars between slope and counters; whereas we had established 100-foot pillars in the No. 2 south basin between the slopes and counters with an 80-foot pillar between counter and first line of cross-cuts, and 100-foot pillars between the breasts.

In recent years, federal and state regulatory agencies have tightened air emission standards. Two of the acid gases, hydrochloric acid (HCI) and sulfur dioxide (SO2), are under heavy scrutiny for reduction. . Most traditional scrubbing systems, i.e. wet scrubbers and spray dryers, meet the standards but they typically are high in capital cost, have significant space requirements for equipment, and are difficult to maintain. Dry sodium injection (DSI) is a alternative technology that has been shown to be effective in HCl and SO2 removal while being the inverse to the problems listed with traditional systems. This paper covers the mechanics of dry injection scrubbing using the most effective sorbents, sodium bicarbonate and mechanically-refined trona (natural sodium sesquicarbonate). It presents DSI performance data for Chambers Medical located in Hampton, SC. This facility incinerates local medical and municipal solid waste. Chambers Medical has used mechanically-fined trona for HCl and SO2 removal since late 1991.

THERE has been interest recently in the conditions under which dislocation pipe diffusion may be observed. In order to extend the measurements to temperatures below Tm/2, where pipe diffusion becomes more important, a chemical sectioning technique was developed for silver single crystals which makes possible the removal of layers of 100A or less. The procedure is briefly as follows. Silver single crystals of 99.995 pct purity were cut in the form of discs t by 4 in., electropolished, and electropolated with Ag110 to about 1000A thickness. The thickness was determined by calibrating the activity with the weight of heavier platings, up to 10,000A. Both diffused and undiffused samples were sectioned in a two-step process. Reaction with a solution of iodine in alcohol formed a thin, even layer of AgI, which was then dissolved in a KCN solution. The reaction rate of the iodine solution varied slightly over a period of time, so that the thickness of the stripped layers, while quite even and regular for a given specimen, ranged from 65 to l00W for different specimens. This variation was checked by using a thickly plated standard with each run. Layer thickness was determined from undiffused samples by the point where the layer activity drops to half the maximum. This maximum intensity also provides, with appropriate corrections, the initial concentration per layer co. Because of the small penetration distances, it is necessary to use the exact solution of Fick's law for a source of finite thickness.' For a plating of thick- where c is the concentration at depth x. flj the error function, D the apparent diffusion coefficient, and t the time. The diffusion coefficient was obtained from the concentration-penetration data by extrapolating to x = 0 where c/co = erf h/2(Dt)1/2 Enough points were taken to impart confidence in the accuracy of the intersection, generally about ten layers. Four temperatures were used as in Table I. For best accuracy, t and h were chosen to give values of the parameter (Dt)1/2/h between 1.0 and 1.7. A typical concentration-penetration curve is shown in Fig. 1. The diffusion coefficients calculated from Eq. [I] are plotted in Fig. 2. For comparison, the high-temperature data of Tomizuka and sonder 2 which go down to 630°C are plotted as the solid line 2(a) from their expression D = 0.40 exp (-44,090/RT). Also for comparison, the lowest temperature point of Hoffman and Tumbull3 is plotted. It is apparent that our data diverge appreciably from the high-temperature extrapolation by 373°C. New and extraordinary physical-chemical properties of materials at nanoscale open up new applications for the building and infrastructure industry such as structural reinforcements, electronic properties and energy harvesting. Therefore the issues and risks associated with the manufacturing of nanomaterials are now of big concern due to the large volumes and typical processing involved in this industry. This paper presents a discussion and selected applications of nanotechnology in the construction and building materials: from metals and alloys, clay and minerals, ceramics, cement and concrete, asphalt, wood and composites, to finishing systems and some of the most used characterization techniques. Besides the progress in some areas, nanotechnology is just emerging in this field, with many challenges and opportunities, problems unsolved and business opportunities. A discussion regarding the potential health issues and risks of using nanomaterials for workers and the potential environment effects is included as well. New images and diagrams are presented and discussed.

Recently, the demand for ultra-thin steel plate with high hardness and strength has been increasing in various industries. In order to satisfy this requirement, steel company designs the chemistry with low CEQ and obtains the required characteristics through quenching and tempering process. Especially, these steels are accompanied by low temperature tempering as a necessary process. Unlike ordinary high temperature tempering steels, it is impossible to improve the flatness after low temperature tempering. Therefore, shape control in the quenching process is very important for securing the excellent quality flatness. In order to obtain flatness in the quenching process, uniform cooling inside the plate should be accompanied. However, the quenching process has limitations in estimating the temperature behavior during cooling because the plate temperature is lowered to room temperature. In this study, a thermocouple was installed inside the actual quenching plate to measure the temperature behavior during cooling and to establish the manufacturing conditions of the quenching plate to ensure excellent flatness quality.

A SERIOUS hazard which must be faced in some mines, though quite absent in others, is that of rockbursts. Bursts cannot be wholly avoided in such mines, but the hazard would largely disappear if they could be predicted. The problem of prediction resolves itself into that of measuring pressure in the mine and determining when that pressure nears a critical value. The geophysical approach to the problem lies in discovering some physical property of the rock, which varies with pressure, which can be measured for rock in place, and for which the indication of critical conditions is sufficiently definite and open scale. A physical property, suggested first in connection with earthquake pre-diction, is that of sub-audible snapping. It was argued that, as the pressure grows, the rock probably yields microscopically and that minute snapping occurs which is so faint as to be inaudible to the unaided ear. Experience has proved this to be the case. Following other earlier work begun early in 1939, experiments with this method were initiated at Lake Shore Mines in 1941, and equipment was slowly being developed in practice when, fortunately, it was found possible to by-pass this tedious development programme. Experiments with sub-audible snapping in mine rocks had been carried out by Dr. L. A. Obert of the U.S. Bureau of Mines and his associates over a period of about four years. An amplifier and a recorder were developed, each reasonably satisfactory in practice. Lake Shore Mines offers a tempting field for rockburst research. Dr. Obert was invited to test his equipment in this and other mines in Ontario and did so. As a result, he and the administrative personnel of the Bureau became interested in the Lake Shore experiments co the extent of most generously arranging for the manufacture of sets of their own designed equipment for use in this programme. The first three sets of recorders were ordered at once and were delivered in May, 1942. A second group of three sets, incorporating various improvements indicated by experience both in the United States and in Canada, reached Kirkland Lake in April, 1943. The pick-up devices, known as geophones, were made in the electronics laboratory at Lake Shore by Mr. Zack Gibbs, who has had charge of all the instrument development in this re-search.

A robust theory of sedimentation-consolidation evolved and was accepted by researchers worldwide in the last two decades of the 20th century. This theory provides a reliable method of thickener design, simulation and control. However, a process model, simple or sophisticated, empirical or phenomenological, is useful only if it is possible to determine, in an objective way, its experimental parameters. Although it is important for a mineral processing plant to perform periodical laboratory test to determine thickening parameters, and in this way adjust the operation, not always these tests represent the behavior of the material in the process. It is important to be able to determine these parameters directly in the thickeners. Research workers at the University of Concepción developed new instrumentation, algorithms and software for the determination of thickening parameters. In this paper, two new instruments for the on-line determination of the settling velocity and the compressibility of the sediment are presented and results of tests in a major mineral processing plant in Chile are described.

Two groups of methods are usually used in design procedures of underground excavation of dimension stone: the analytical and numerical methods of analysis. In all of these methods the in situ rock mass strength represents the main problem. This is due to massive rocks in dimension stone deposits, consisting of large blocks of rock separated with particular discontinuities, for which the Hoek-Brown empirical criterion, developed for jointed rock masses, cannot be realistically used to estimate rock mass strength, especially for a particular block of rock mass or a particular pillar. On the basis of the regular underground excavation process of dimension stone by separating blocks with the flat jack application, we developed the in situ flexural strength testing method. We carried out numerical analyses and evaluation of uncertainty of measurement in order to validate the in situ flexural strength testing method. On the basis of very good validation results, as well as results of the in situ flexural strength testing of exploitable layers on the ?Kanfanar? quarry, we introduced a new coefficient of reduction, which can be used for correction of other strength parameters determined by laboratory testing for obtaining a realistic value of rock mass strength.
