Copper price rebounds A worldwide scramble for diminishing supplies of copper has pushed the red metal's price to more than $2.20/kg ($1 per lb), the highest level since 1980. The first nine months of 1987, world copper production was down 1% from a year ago, while consumption rose 7%. Demand has been fueled by economic strength in several countries, particularly Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. The price has also been helped by interest rate declines that have prompted manufacturers to build up inventories. In addition, China is expected to be a major buyer in 1988 as it stocks up for its five-year industrialization plan. There appears to be no sign of any significant increase in copper supplies until later 1988 or early 1989. This means supplies probably will remain tight for some time even if world economic activity slows. Strikes and other production problems slowed world output of copper in 1987. As a result, copper supplies are the lowest they have been in 14 years. World inventories currently total 625 kt (690,000 st). That is not much above the 585 kt (645,000 st) level reached in 1974 when the price of copper rose to a record $3.84/kg ($1.74 per lb). This makes all the more interesting what Chile, the world's largest copper producer, has been doing lately. Chile has been the world's largest copper producer since 1982, when it overtook the United States. Table 1 shows Chile's copper grades, reserves, and production at its mines. Chile contains roughly one-fifth of the world's copper reserves. At present production rates, these reserves would last for more than 100 years. In 1986, Chile produced 1.4 Mt (1.5 million st) of fine copper, up 3%. Chile accounted for 17% of the world's copper output.

While surety capacity for the mining industry continues to shrink, States are demanding greater financial certainty for closure/post closure obligations. To combat these demands, larger mining companies are pursuing a Mining Surety Reinsurance Program that requires a significant up front capital contribution. This paper outlines an alter-native program for middle market mining organizations. The program utilizes a “Blended Finite Risk” environmental insurance solution with surety acting as the “front” in states where insurance is not an acceptable form of collateral. Marsh proposes creating separate programs for each State requiring surety. The reason for separate programs stems from each states’ different surety rules. Insurance companies typically require at least $5 million in future value remediation liabilities for finite risk programs. Since most middle market mining companies have obligations that fall below this threshold, the Blended Finite Risk Program contemplates combining several companies closure/post closure liabilities to accomplish the minimum amount required by the insurance company. Why use a Blended Finite Risk Program? One of the primary benefits is the financial assurance that funds will be available for planned remediation. For example, the financial assurance may be required by a government agency. The certainty may help facilitate a merger or acquisition. Additionally, the funds may be part of a CER-CLA PRP settlement. In all cases, the insurer providing coverage would be a secure independent 3rd party. A Blended Finite Risk Program also provides a long-term solution – up to 30 years and in some select cases longer. The benefit to a state or the BLM is the removal of financial uncertainty. An insurance company writing the policy would have an AA or AAA balance sheet. The hardening of surety markets coupled with the tightening of financial assurance requirements in many states have necessitated the posting of 100% collateral. This program substantially reduces these collateral requirements.

Attachment of collectors containing thioamide groups to sulfide minerals is interpreted as interaction between NH-acids and sulfides acting as solid bases with the formation of a donor–acceptor reagent–mineral bond. As the acid function of the reagents increases, their sorption optimum is observed to shift to a less alkaline region. The developed concept has enabled us to propose a method for calculating optimal pH values for the sorption of reagents on mineral surfaces depending on the acidity of the reagents and the pH value of the medium. Our estimates correlate well with the experimental data. We studied the spectra of the reagents containing thioamide groups and the spectra of copper salts and their surface compounds on an oxidised copper film, chalcopyrite, and pyrite using the infrared (IR) spectroscopy. Some effective applications are described of reagents containing thioamide groups in the flotation of copper, copper-molybdenum, and gold ores, both separately and in combination with other collectors. It is shown that the flotation performance is maximised by adding two- and three-component collector combinations, including collectors containing thioamide groups. In this case, the increase in the recovery of copper, molybdenum, and gold is up to 2-5% compared to conventional process conditions. A new, high-performing reagent containing a thioamide group is proposed. A commercial pilot batch of the reagent was produced and sent for flotation tests in gold ore applications. The study of oil production methods with reference to the amount of oil originally pressent in the oil-bearing, formations has developed the fact that-ordinary methods-of production remove only a part of the oil actually present. In fact, it is generally realized that when a field is abandoned more oil remains in the sand than has ever been removed. As a consequence of this realization, the petroleum engineer has devoted considerable tine in recent years in devising methods for increasing the percentage of recovery. His studies have indicated that in most cases the total production of a field is dependent upon the available gas rather than upon the available oil. Mien the gas in the sand is exhausted, oil production ceases even though there may be enormous quantities of oil remaining unrecovered. Consequently, any method of conserving the gas or increasing the supply of gas will increase the ultimate recovery from a field. The practice of producing oil under vacuum increases the effectiveness of the gas remaining in the sand, as well as furnishing more gas by evaporating the light fractions of the crude. Pumping ' compressed gas or air down selected wells of a lease has been found to increase the production of oil from the surrounding wells. Studies of oil and gas ratios have indicated that much of the available gas has been wasted as far as its effectiveness on oil production is concerned. his has led to the development of "stop cocking"3 and the practice of producing under back pressure3, which methods aim, to obtain more effective work from the gas with reference to the amount of oil delivered to the well.

DISCOVERED during the time of the Spaniards, the Namiquipa silver-lead-zinc mines in Chihuahua, Mexico, remained idle until 1916, when mining claims were first denounced. About 1922 a Japanese company, the Santo Domingo Mining Co., was formed to mine the oxide silver ore. The company built a 75-tpd cyanide plant and mined in the area for a number of years. Because of an error in surveying in one of the company's mines situated in another district, mining was carried over into a claim owned by General Marcel Caraveo, at that time governor of Chihuahua. Santo Domingo Mining Co. lost the resulting lawsuit and consequently had no capital to continue operating at Namiquipa. Later, Ray Brown and Eugenio Caballero formed a company to operate the mine, shipping crude ore to the American Smelting and Refining Co. smelter at Avalos, Chihuahua. The cyanide plant was changed to flotation with a capacity of 75 tons per 24 hr. In 1936 the property was again closed owing to labor trouble, a drop in the price of silver, and increased water in the mine.

This paper reviews the results of the subsidence research prop ram at Sandia National Laboratories. The manuscript highlights the following: the application of empirical methods (profile functions) to the subsidence above longwall panels in the U.S.; the use of the "rubble model" to describe the behavior of broken strata as it distends when it falls to the Mine floor (or top of the rubble pile) and then is subsequently compacted as it is loaded by overlying elements of strata; and, the application of physical modeling techniques (centrifuge simulations) and numerical techniques to study the failure mechanisms in highly structured stratigraphy. The capabilities of the latter two are illustrated ')y comparing their predictions to the results of a field case that has complicated stratigraphy.

Great Salt Lake brine was subjected, in laboratory scale, to conditions simulating solar evaporation. Solid phases and the variation in composition of the liquid phase throughout the potassium salts crystallization zone are presented. These experimental results are discussed and compare with stable equilibrium data of the quinary system Cl-, SO4, Na+, K+, Mg + + and H2O. The Great Salt Lake brine in Utah is a vast reserve of several potential chemicals which has attracted much attention in the recent past. From the standpoint of an ore reserve, it may be said that the lake contains a low grade ore which has to be concentrated by evaporation of water. Because of the fairly favorable weather conditions in the Great Salt Lake area, it seems reasonable to consider solar evaporation as an economical means of concentration. From the view of phase chemistry, the main constituents of Great Salt Lake brine make it belong to the five component system: C1-, SO4=, Na+, K+, Mg++ and H2O. Because of their low concentration, the presence of other elements may be regarded as having little effect on the equilibrium of the five main components. Equilibrium data for the quinary system of our interest has been available for many years. Using these data, it is possible to calculate how the brine of the lake will concentrate when subjected to solar evaporation. In practicing solar evaporation, the weather factor and supersaturation conditions cannot be ignored, but their introduction into calculations using equilibrium diagrams is almost an impossible task. With the experimental work presented in this paper, an attempt is made to compare the stable equilibrium data of the quinary system as applied to the case of the Great Salt Lake brine and the dynamic equilibrium when that brine is subjected to continuous solar evaporation. Sea water brine belongs to this quinary system when only the major constituents are considered. The study of this system has been carried on since the last decades of the nineteenth century. The reason for these intensive studies was to give a geological explanation to the underground potash deposits. AS a result, many theories were presented trying to relate the equilibrium data with the geological formation, paragenesis and metamorphism of these deposits. Two main approaches were followed for the equilibrium studies of this quinary system. One of them, and the best known to us, was the school started in Germany in the last century by J. H. Van't Hoff. The other one, which started about the same time, was the school of N. S. Kurnakov in Russia. Both approaches were different and as a consequence generated opposite theories about the geological formation of potash deposits. The Van't Hoff school studied the quinary system of sea water under careful laboratory control, resulting in stable phase diagrams. During these studies, Van't Hoff recognized the difficulties in crystallizing some double salts.' ". . . . we unexpectedly found that some compounds whose formation in the solutions under investigation was possible at 25°C, nevertheless totally failed to put in an appearance. These, not to mention the calcium salts, were leonite, MgSO4 . K2SO4 4 H2O; kainite, KC1-MgSO4 . 3 H2O; and kieserite, MgSO4 .H2O. Even exceedingly slow crystallization with the addition of the compounds themselves did not remove the condition of supersaturation in the case of these bodies." However, those salts (leonite, kainite, and kieserite) were included in the stable phase diagram at 25°C as shown in Fig. 1 using D'Ans data.3 The figure also shows the sequence of crystallization of the Great Salt Lake brine according to the stable diagram. At the Cleveland meeting of the Institute, October, 1912, I had occasion to call attention to the general though erroneous impression that the principal mining activities of the United States lie west of the 100th meridian of longitude. Few, I believe, realize that the States east of the Mississippi river, which comprise only 28.8 per cent. of the total area of the United States, exclusive of Alaska, contribute about two-thirds of the total mineral production, computing by values. In 1910 the percentage of the production credited to the Eastern States was 67; in 1911 it was 65. When I have, with becoming modesty, ventured to speak of these comparisons, I have usually been met with the rejoinder, " But you include coal." I surely do, for whereas coal (m petroleum, as natural gas, as limestone) is not in the strictly technical definition of the word, a " mineral," it is legally mineral, is certainly a mineral substance, and contributes by far the largest tonnage and approximately one-third of the total value of all mineral products. The production of coal-mines in 1911 weighed approximately 500,000,000 tons. In 1912 it exceeded that record by nearly, if not quite, 50,000,000 tons. According to H. D. McCaskey, of the U. S. Geological Survey, the total weight of all the metallic ores mined in the United States in 1911 was 105,000,000 tons (a little more than one-fifth that of coal). In 1910 Mr. Lindgren estimated the total weight of all metallic ores at 120,000,000 tons. The products of the quarries, clay-pits, oil-wells, phosphate-mines, and other non-metallic products, taken all together, did not in 1911 weigh in excess of 300,000,000 tons, so that the output of coal exceeds by 25 per cent. the combined tonnage of all other mineral products. Recovery of metals contained in the electrode materials of batteries was studied considering an integrated recycling process constituted by physical and chemical operations. The physical treatment included the shredding of the spent batteries, followed by a wet sieving operation of the fragmented material. The physical behavior of Ni-Cd and Zn-Mn based (alkaline and saline) system batteries was studied and compared. In that sense, shredding operation was performed and the sieving of shredded fractions was accomplished to evaluate the efficiency of the separation of electrodes and scrap. For Ni-Cd batteries the loss of electrode material with the supra fraction (scrap) after the shredding operation was lesser than the Zn-Mn batteries. Especially for saline-type batteries, the electrode attached to the scrap was substantial leading to important losses. This difference can be explained by the composition of the case materials and the internal physical constitution of the electrodes. The wet sieving studies carried out allowed optimizing the separation of the electrode fine fractions from the scrap materials through the analysis of selectivity Cd/Fe or Zn/Fe. For Ni-Cd batteries, maximum selectivity was achieved for the granulometry of 1.4 mm, while for alkaline and saline systems best selectivity were obtained at 2.8 mm and 5.6 mm, respectively. This process allowed the recovery of about 70% of electrodes for Ni-Cd and alkaline systems, and 50% for saline batteries, with less than 5% of scrap as contaminant. This physical step can be considered as a pre-treatment of this type of waste material envisaging its valorization by chemical treatment, as improves the concentration of the elements of interest and decreases the iron content.

Significant coal reserves in New South Wales lie underneath major bodies of natural and stored surface waters. In order that mining can occur safely and without any adverse effect on the surface, various statutory provisions and administrative guidelines have been framed for regulating the surface and sub-surface strata disturbance. There are particular bases for the existing guidelines and the assumptions which were made in their choice. Evaluation of the guidelines in the light of the knowledge gained during the last ten years indicates that they are conservative in some cases and can be made less restrictive without lowering the safety standards. The suggested changes include reduced width for pillars in both bord and pillar first workings and panel and pillar workings, and increased level of extraction for a given degree of subsidence. Changes, if implemented, would lead to increased coal recovery.

A Bayesian decision model of minimun risk, based on the probability and costs of mine discoveries and non-economic projects, is presented for massive sulphide exploration in the Canadian Shield. The sample used for the model is composed of data relating to forty mines, sixty non-economic sulphide occurrences, and sixty occurrences of graphitic and pyritic material. These economic and barren samples consist of drill-tested occurrences which were, in varying degree, characterized by conductivity anomalies. Given the large size, the reliability and the homogeneity of the data base available for massive sulphide exploration, it is shown that certain statistical models can and should be utilized as a tool for decision-making by explorationists. Given this data base, information theory tells us that only those signals that are independent of one another will transmit information with minimum error. An ensemble of six significant multilevel signals, markedly independent of one another and consisting of numeric and geometric form descriptions derived from Bouguer anomaly, aeromagnetic and physiographic maps, were identified and evaluated by case studies. The use of these signals as input in a simple statistical procedure, or in a carefully planned and experienced visual appreciation scheme, can be of significant aid in decisions concerning the choice of favourable areas or sectors to explore in detail. The method of discriminant analysis is theoretically and practically suited for the statistical modelling involved. By way of a simulation on our statistical model, the efficiency of the model and of the underlying criteria is determined for historic cases and, by inference, for its validity in future exploration. An approximate optimized solution is derived from the model which suggests that over 90% of the known ore could be found by screening, according to a model such as that herein described, and drilling only 30% of the targets (mostly barren) normally identified and tested in current and past exploration.

The preparation and subsequent reduction of vanadium trichloride was investigated as a process for the production of high-purity vanadium metal. Chlorine was reacted with vanadium oxide in the presence of carbon to vanadium tetrachloride. The contaminant vanadium oxytrichloride was also formed and later converted to tetrachloride by reaction with chlorine in the presence of activated charcoal. Vanadium tetrachloride was stirred continuously during thermal dissociation to vanadium trichloride powder from which volatile contaminants were removed by distillation. The vanadium trichloride powder was reduced to vanadium sponge by controlled feeding of the trichloride into molten magnesium. Excess reductant and byproduct salt were removed from the vanadium sponge by high-vacuum distillation. Batches as large as 6.5 kilograms of sponge metal were prepared at an average reaction efficiency of 98 percent. Vanadium sponge after consolidation by arc-melting contained 820 to 11330 ppm of interstitial impurities and had a hardness between Rockwell B 40 and 70, This metal exhibited excellent workability at room temperature. The purification of impure vanadium metal by electron-beam melting resulted in lowering interstitial impurities from 1,890 to 504 ppm and hardness from Rockwell B 87 to 28.

THE HIGH-TEMPERATURE SCALE IN OPTICAL PYROMETRY AT the basis of optical pyrometry lie the theoretical and experimental data of the so-called blackbody. The black body is essentially a theoretical conception, with certain simple properties attributed to it -fundamentally, the property that its radiation at any temperature is a unique function of the temperature and does not involve any other variables. As a theoretical conception, an equation has been developed by Boltzmann connecting the total radiant power with the temperature, and another equation by Planck connecting the distribution of radiant power throughout the spectrum with the temperature. The integral of the latter with respect to wave-length conduces to the former and permits the evaluation of the constant c1 of the Planck equation, ass given in the form. J-= cl?-5 c2 (1) e ? T ? 1 assuming that the constant Q of the Stefan-Boltzmann law E=a(T4-T40) is known. The other constant c2 is arrived at by other methods, which will be discussed later. This equation for the black body lies at the foundation of optical pyrometry. To make the discussion complete, it should be stated that the theoretical black body is quite closely realized by a hollow enclosure with walls at a uniform temperature and radiating through a small orifice. The electrically heated black body, first introduced by Lummer and Kurlbaum, is an essential part of the equipment of a pyrometric research or testing laboratory. Numerous investigations have shown that its radiation conforms to that of the theoretical black body within experimental errors. Hence by operating the electrically heated black body at the melting point of some pure metal for which the temperature of melting has been determined on the vas scale. a standard is obtained for comparison with

In the design of a modem mill, a stockpile storage system for raw and/or semi-processed ore has become almost indispensable. This paper discusses the benefits of such stockpile storage as well as the various types of belt conveyor stockpiling units available. Particular attention is given to large radial stackers since they offer the greatest flexibility. Stacker control systems and accessory equipment are briefly discussed. Various alternative reclaiming arrangements for stockpiles are reviewed and a discussion of the advantages and drawbacks of each arrangement is included.

A simplified mathematical model of underground conduction heating in a system of limited permeability is presented. The model applies to underground retorting of oil shale, or to reservoirs containing extremely heavy oils. We assume that heat is introduced at a constant rate into a horizontal fracture which communicates between wells. The radial temperature distribution along the fractured surface is approximated by a step-function. Heat transfer away from the fracture is assumed to be by vertical conduction, and all convection effects are neglected. The model also takes into account the possible temperature dependence of thermal conductivity. A general expression for calculating the growth of the step-function temperature distribution with time is derived. The use of this expression and solutions to the one-dimensional heat equation make it possible to construct isotherms. Expressions for calculating .oil recovery, well spacing and heat efficiency are also given. An example calculation is presented for the conduction heating process in oil shale. Finally, the effect of the heat transfer coefficient between the gas and the fracture boundaries is investigated. INTRODUCTION Thermal recovery processes of oil recovery fall into the four general areas of hot fluid injection, forward combustion, reverse combustion and conduction heating. The first three of* these processes have been rather extensively studied in the past decade from both the experimental and theoretical points of view. As a result, it is possible to make reasonable engineering predictions and analyses of these processes. Little attention has been devoted, however, to the conduction heating process other than to note its possible utility.I To a certain extent, conduction heating cannot be divorced from the other regimes cited above, insofar as these provide the source of heat energy. In the conduction heating process, heat is introduced (either by combustion in the forward or reverse mode or by hot fluid injection) into a small fraction of the total reservoir thickness. This fraction may be either a streak of high permeability or an interwell fracture. Heat penetrates by conduction into the adjacent, less permeable regions of the oil-bearing rock, where the direction of conduction is essentially perpendicular to the streak or fracture. The heated product then drains by gravity or is gas driven to production wells. Conduction heating is probably most applicable to systems containing immobile bitumens such as tar sands and oil shale deposits and perhaps to low-permeability reservoirs containing highly viscous crudes. The mechanism also acts in combination with other thermal processes where fingering or overriding of a bed occurs. It seems probable that in at least one field test, conduction heating of this type was very influential.2 In this presentation we give a first approximation to some of the quantitative aspects of conduction heating. Marx and Langenheim3 treated a similar problem where they focused attention upon the injection interval, which spanned the total reservoir thickness. In their model, conduction heat losses to the bounding media imposed a practical limit on the calculated heated area. In the present study, however, we shall confine the injection interval to a small fraction of the reservoir thickness and assume it has no heat capacity. We therefore direct our attention to regions outside the injection interval into which the conduction of heat is beneficial. In particular, we will endeavor to locate specific isotherms in the media bounding the injection interval. Furthermore, we will construct our model to allow the thermal conductivity to vary arbitrarily with temperature. Thus the model will be applicable to underground retorting of shale where variations in thermal conductivity may be important. "This project constitutes the results of a geophysical field investigation undertaken in the mining areas in the vicinity of Marion, Crittenden County, Kentucky.Results were obtained at well-known mines being worked for fluorspar. Of special interest was the determination of mineral trends at such mines, particularly in relation to the fault patterns, because of ore in them.This work also constitutes a comparison between the field information that can be obtained by purely geological means and the additional information obtained by applying geophysical surveys to the same areas.As the mineralization in this area is controlled almost surely by the faults therein, the great importance of locating faults cannot be over emphasized. Accordingly, there has been incorporated herein the analyses as well as the application of electrical resistivity methods for fault determinations.In the western part of Kentucky, particularly in that area designated as the Cave-In-Rock quadrangle by the United States Geological Survey, is located the center of the fluorspar mining district of Kentucky. From the mining as well as commercial viewpoint, this area is of considerable interest and importance. It has been described by Currier4/ as a large structural dome that collapsed, through faulting, into a mosaic composed of a main fault pattern that has a strike to the northeast in sedimentary formations. Accompanying this main fault pattern are a large number of irregular faults. This fault complex is also traversed by a dike pattern that has a regional strike for this region focusing a northwesterly direction. The faulting occurred before the dike intrusions, the latter being composed largely of peridotite rocks. According to Reed,5/ most of the metallic mineralization, composed chiefly of galena and sphalerite, occurs at or near the Intersection of the dikes with the faults, indicating a possible igneous origin of the ore deposits. Reed adds that the fluorspar generally does not follow this rule but may also be found in other portions of the faulted zone not directly related to dike intrusions. The area may be considered of equal interest in the occurrence of lead and zinc and in the occurrence of fluorspar controlled by the faults. Hatmaker and Davis6/ give detailed information concerning the form of the ore bodies and economic factors that control ore production in this area; they also suggest the application of geophysical methods in this territory. Ulrich and Smith7/ also discuss geological details in this area. This area is therefore of interest, whether examined from a large structural point of view or from a very detailed angle. The former will assist in determining the origin of the mineralization and its economic possibilities, whereas the latter will give details concerning fault locations and their geologically and geophysically controlling features. This work was undertaken as a pilot investigation relating to the study of the location of fault occurrences, in which it was attempted to determine the location of faults as well as the fault patterns in certain isolated areas. No effort was made to identify the mineralization from the gouge material in the faulted zones; this problem was left for subsequent investigations."

This paper, based on brief field examination and on data supplied by the operators, records the condition of the Italian mercury industry as of March 1945, not long after Italy's collapse. Except for the once-Italian but now Yugoslavian Idria mine near Trieste, virtually all the known mercury deposits are in the Monte Amiata district in Siena and Grosseto Provinces, 75 miles north of Rome. This district contains the Abbadia San Salvatore. the Siele. the Argus, and the Cerreto Piano mines besides numerous prospects and unproductive mines. Under pressure from Germany the principal mines were highly productive during the early part of the war, but production fell off long before its end. All of the mines were damaged in some way at the German withdrawal but by September 1944 the Abbadia had resumed production and several others were only lacking power by the early spring of 1945. The Monte Amiata district is characterized geologically by a thick series of sedimentary rocks that range from Triassic to Eocene in age . and are surmounted on Monte Amiata itself by a thick cap of extrusive trachyte. Bodies of travertine and of landslide detritus, younger than the trachyte, are rather widespread. The structure is complex and little known but most of the ore deposits seem to lie along or near a major, north-trending fault or on associated cross-fractures. Cinnabar is the only important ore mineral and clay minerals are by far the most abundant products of hydrothermal alteration. A southward increase in the amount of stibnite, relative to cinnabar, suggests horizontal zoning. The grade of ore ranges from 0.60 to 3.0 Pet and the reserves, as compared with those in American mines, are enormous. Even in the face of war-time scarcities, the mines are remarkably self-sufficient and labor is plentiful, but the costs of production are estimated to be not greatly below those of the better American mines. Despite their enviable position with respect to the supplies of a metal so essential in both war and peace, there is a notable lack of up-to-date information in America on the mercury industry of either country. Duschak and Schuette' and Schuettez,3 give by far the best summaries in English known to the writer, but the latest firsthand report cited by them on the Italian mines was published in 1915.' Having been deeply interested in the geology and economics of mercury for several years, the writer naturally felt most fortunate in being the to obtain enough firsthand information on the Italian industry to fill at least a few of the gaps in our knowledge. The opportunity came during the war, soon after this industry, together with the rest of Italy, had capitulated to the Allies. This paper, based on brief field examination and on data supplied by the operators, records the condition of the Italian mercury industry as of March 1945, not long after Italy's collapse. Except for the once-Italian but now Yugoslavian Idria mine near Trieste, virtually all the known mercury deposits are in the Monte Amiata district in Siena and Grosseto Provinces, 75 miles north of Rome.
