This report relates to the sulfur industry of seven States--Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas--and is part of a national study of the sulfur industry by the Bureau of Mines. Markets as used in this report are divided into two components for individual analysis-- (1) supplier markets which include regional Frasch and byproduct sulfur producers and (2) consumer markets which include processors and manufacturers requiring sulfur in their operations The term sulfur as used in this report includes brimstone, native sulfur, elemental sulfur, or sulfur equivalents.

"Age hardenable 2014 aluminum alloys and composites containing 0.10 and 0.15 volume fractions of alumina particles (VFAP) have been solutionized at 540 and 550°C for up to 20 hours. The solutionized samples, heat treated for 5 and 20 hours, have been subjected to room temperature rolling until cracking develops. The work hardening curves have been compared to determine the effect of solutionizing time on the rolling characteristics from both hardness and the microstructural evolution points of view. Solutionizing at two different temperatures results in differences in the extent to which the composites can be rolled until fracture. The microstructural characterization by TEM has been performed to understand the room temperature rolling behavior.IntroductionThe effect of solutionizing on the age hardening response of 6061 and 2014 aluminum alloys and composites reinforced with 0.10, 0.15 and 0.20 volume fractions of alumina particles (VFAP) have been reported in the literature [1-4]. A comparison of the monolith and composites indicates that particles promote the aging process through differences in the microstructures in solutionized condition. The first effect of solutionizing is to produce a grain growth process which follows a grain growth law (square of grain diameter as a function of solutionizing time). It appears that it is possible for vacancies to be emitted during grain growth period as they try to minimize the total grain boundary surface area by increasing their diameter. This may be common to both the monolith and the composites. However, the second effect must be exclusively considered for the composites. The particles generate dislocations during the solutionizing process due to the differences in the values of the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) between the particles and aluminum base metal. It has been determined [1] that the dislocation density increases with increase in solutionizing time in the composites of 6061 aluminum alloys reinforced with 0.10, 0.15 and 0.20 VFAP. The improved bonding between particles and matrix can give rise to additional generation of dislocations due to curvature effects [1] with the result that the dislocation density continues to increase with increase in solutionizing time even after the CTE effect is considered to have been stabilized."

"The tunnel sector is excavated into a rock mass heavily affected by tectonics, defined as a regional fault. The rock around the tunnel support undertakes the non – elastic deformation and gradually detaches from the rest of the non affected rock mass, moving inside of the excavated area and tending to fill up the whole space. The initial solution of using stiff support consisting in double steel ribs I12 with circular shape in the upper part and straight vertical pillars in the lower part has proved to be inadequate. Based on the calculations of the subsidence phenomena and a mathematical model, the proposed alternative support was provided by special circular steel ribs – SG-23 –that allows a limited rib deformation (by relative slip between the arch segments) in order to mobilize the contact between the rock contour and the inner face of the rib - not only for the deformed rib but also for the neighboring ribs. 1. INTRODUCTION Hydropower development of Jiu river in Romania, in the narrow gorge sector includes two diversion HPP and a small hydro plant that provides the minimum required flow downstream: CHE Dumitra , CHE Bumbesti and MHC Livezeni (Table 1. Hydropower parameters).The Livezeni intake reservoir is provided by a gated dam located 1250 m downstream of merging point between Jiul de Vest river and Jiul de Est river. The dam is equipped with three radial gates with flap gates with a span of 12 m each and the height of (6 + 3) m. In a recently completed AMIRA project, 20 samples were searched for gold mineralisation using the automated location facility (ALF) for rare phases on a scanning electron microscope in the CSIRO Division of Mineral Products, Melbourne. The samples were submitted by mining companies in Australia, and Papua New Guinea, and included crushed ore samples, cyclone overflow and underflow products, a flotation concentrate, and 12 tailing samples. Their gold contents ranged from 600 to 0.2 g/t An. Native gold and gold minerals including a gold telluride, gold-silver tellurides, and a gold bismuth mineral, were located in the samples as free grains and associated with other minerals such as pyrite, magnetite, hematite, ankerite, copper sulphides, silicate minerals, and quartz. In the highest grade samples, both micron sized and 200 ¦m grains of gold were found with ALF. It would be difficult to locate such d wide size range of gold in a manual search. Gold mineralisation was located in the tailing samples assaying 0.4 g/t An and higher. In several tailing samples coarse grains of native gold over 40 p.m in size were located. One grain was estimated to have contributed 40 per cent of the gold in the sample. As well as locating gold mineralisation, the ALF examination resulted in the identification of uranium, mercury, and bismuth minerals in the samples. Knowledge of the distribution of these minerals in processing streams could be important in the operation of a concentrator.

Most commercial explosives contain from 70% to 94% (by weight) ammonium nitrate. When some of the explosives end up in shot rock and ore, through either spillage or incomplete detonation, ammonia and nitrates can leach into the ground water. In recent years, state and federal regulators have applied more stringent water-quality standards, particularly at new mines and development projects. When mining conditions permit, bulk ANFO, a mixture of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil, is the explosive of choice. ANFO is less costly than other explosives but it dissolves readily in water. Several case histories in the United States and Canada show a clear connection between uncontrolled losses of bulk explosives and high nitrate levels in mine effluents. Mining companies have tried several approaches to reduce ammonia and nitrate levels in groundwater. These approaches range from controlling explosive losses to treating the mine effluents. In this paper, controlling explosive losses is addressed For both packaged and bulk explosives, guidelines to limit losses during storage, handling and use are described in detail.

Mining projects have long since presented challenges for the protection of the water environment. Lessons learnt from historical pollution incidents and increasingly stringent environmental controls have significantly improved the environmental performance of mines in developed countries. In contrast, water protection legislation and guidance in the Former Soviet Union (FSU) countries, based on the æpolluter paysÆ principle, has not promoted the prevention of water pollution, and examples of poor environmental performance in mining still exist. However, there is now evidence of emerging legislation encouraging the protection of the water environment. This paper provides an overview of water protection legislation in the Russian Federation and Armenia and highlights some of the challenges facing international mining companies developing projects. A mining case study is described, which highlights how communities in Armenia increasingly value their water environment. Here, greater public participation in development projects is playing a vital role in influencing water protection legislation. It is considered that public opinion and emerging legislation will increasingly present challenges for the development of mining projects.

ONLY a few small pools of oil were found in West Virginia during 1924. The price of oil was so low that there was no incentive for active effort toward the discovery of new pools or the exploitation of reasonably certain productive areas. At present, several encouraging edge-pool developments are being held in reserve in the hope that a more favorable market is not far distant. In the old pools, wells are being carefully tended; there being little tendency toward abandonment. even in cases where production is temporarily unprofitable. In natural gas, however, the total value of which at the well mouth is now more than that of oil, the year has been busy and profitable. , The decline of old pools, together with the increasing demand, has caused the large operators who carry their gas to the consumer to make great efforts to preserve or increase the rate of production; while the small operators, who sell their product to the large companies at the well mouth, have been stimulated toward the same effort by more favorable prices. These conditions brought about the completion of a greater number .of gas wells in 1924 than in 1923. Few pools of gas have been discovered during the year, the principal production having been obtained in old areas and in the unusually large new territory that was revealed as potentially productive by the drilling of 1923. Some of these latter areas are still without pipelines but definite plans for getting most of this gas are now being executed.

PROJECT The Walgautunnel is the heart of a new hydro scheme in Western Austria, which is supposed to go into operation in 1984. With it's length of 21,4 km, a bored diameter of 6,25 m and an internal operating pressure of 13,5 bar it will be the largest water conducting tunnel in Austria. Even compared with some of the country's world-famous highway tunnels like 'Tauern' or 'Arlberg' it has to be regarded as a major tunneling project. Owner is the Vorarlberger Illwerke AG, a power corpo¬ration founded in 1924. In the course of the past 6o years this company developed the 'Werksgruppe Obere Ill - Lünersee', consisting of 6 major power plants and 4 large reservoirs. The installed capacity is 1.114 MW in the generating and 529 MW in the pumping mode. The total power output amounts to 1.916 GWh. The water for power generation comes from the glaciers of the Silvrettagroup, as this corner of the Austrian Alps between Vorarlberg , Tyrol and Switzerland is called. The Walgauwerk utilises all the water accumulated by the existing schemes as well as the so far unused run-off water, passing by in the river Ill. The intake to the Walgau-Tunnel is situated right beside the lower reservoir of the recently completed pump-storage plant 'Rodund II' at an elevation of 64o m above sea level. Though the head is a mere 162 m, 1 billion m3 of water will generate 356 GWh per annum. The power-output of the two Francis turbines is 86 MW.

"This work has for objective to identify the soil of the neighborhood Codin located in a lacking area of the urban nucleus of the district of Campos dos Goytacazes - RJ, after the identification the best line was determined for the production of soil-cement blocks. In this area it happens habitational deficit and precarious constructions are also verified. The use of soil cement blocks is considered a cheaper constructive method than the conventional (ceramic block or of concrete), because one of the components of the raw material is abundant (the soil) and the constructions can be erect with certain easiness for collective effort regime. Samples of soil of this area were collected for they be characterized with relationship to the physical and chemical characteristics, with I aid of GPS the community's location it was registered. Identified the soil type, the work began the study of lines they to make possible your use in an economical and safe way. For that were made drained blocks in the format 19,5x10x5 cm, with lines containing the addition of 5% and 10% of cement in volume, and as parameter of quality the absorption of water and the resistance to the compression were measured, following the Norms of ABNT.IntroductionWe know that the use of the soil by the humanity come from the antiquity. THE technical- advantages of adding oxygen to air and producer gas, or using it as a reactive agent, producing 400 B.t.u. gas instead of. the present 150 B.t.u., with higher flame temperatures and a reducing flame possible, with a smaller volume of gases passing through a furnace, will result in quicker melting, sharp working, and the production of a higher quality steel. Probably electric-furnace quality steel can be produced in an open-hearth furnace using oxygen. A modern, standard, 100-ton open-hearth furnace, with all equipment, costs from $350,000 to $500,000; there are about 1000 open-hearth furnaces in this country. When considering the use of oxygen in the open-hearth furnace, it is necessary to study: (1) The use of oxygen in the present furnaces, such that modification of existing furnaces and equipment cost the minimum, although the full advantages of oxygen are not thus obtainable. (2) The use of oxygen in a furnace designed for its use, producing quality and quantity steel at the lowest possible cost. This entails the junking of approximately one-half the value in existing equipment-writing off $250,000,000. The basis of such an estimate is the present cost of manufacturing open-hearth steel. Objection may be taken to some of the unit prices here given, but while some companies obtain their ores for much less, the prices quoted are -market price. They are used to show the maximum economy obtained by oxygen at that point.

In the paper some interesting cases of applications of Operations Research and Computer Methods as worked out by the author and accepted by the management of some of the newly formed Indian mining organisation for implementation are highlighted. The main emphasis on the application cases was to use simple techniques and methods which yield the result in shorter time period, The case problems mainly deals with the production system optimisation in unit mines, areas/divisions and at the corporate levels. Also the management decisions regarding reorganisation of transport and distribution system of material and mineral are attempted to be optimised. Further, the case of management system development with computer aided decision making worked out for single large Iron Ore Project captive to a steel plant is outlined. Finally, the case of a large mining company having decentralised units and divisions geographically dispersed throughout the country, computerised management decision-information system designed on the basis of inputs and outputs of decision models relevant for different levels of management in the organisation is depicted.

RESEARCH is undertaken to find out what must be done when what we are doing now is no longer adequate. To accomplish this end, researchers apply the truths of nature to industrial evolution. A survey conducted with the co-operation of 58 universities and colleges offering degrees in mineral engineering was the basis for the table accompanying this article. This survey was undertaken with the object of presenting to faculties and student bodies, as well as to industry, all available information on what action the educational institutions of the country have taken to provide the properly trained researchers so vitally needed. A hoped for result is that the great variety of opportunities available will encourage some undergraduate students to continue in their field beyond attainment of a B.S. degree.

A geometallurgical model is currently built in two different ways. The first and the most common way relies on geometallurgical testing, where a large number of samples are analysed for metallurgical response using small-scale laboratory tests, eg Davis tube testing. The second, mineralogical approach focuses on collecting mineralogical information over the orebody and building the metallurgical model based on mineralogy. At Lules University of Technology, Sweden, the latter method has been adopted and taken further in four ongoing PhD studies. The geological model gives modal composition by the help of element-to-mineral conversion and Rietveld X-ray diffraction. Texturally, the orebody is divided into different archetypes, and liberation measurements for each of them are carried out in processing fineness using IncaMineral, a SEM-based technique. The grindability and liberation spectrum of any given geological unit (sample, ore block, domain) are extrapolated from the archetypes. The process model is taken into a liberation level by mass balancing selected metallurgical tests using the particle tracking technique. The approach is general and can be applied to any type of ores. In the case of The Eureka Consolidated Mining Company v. The Richmond Mining Company of Nevada, recently tried at San Francisco, California, the real defendant was the Richmond Consolidated Mining Company, of London; but this being a foreign corporation, holds its mining property in Nevada through the Nevada corporation of similar name, in which the London Company owns all the stock, except the few shares necessary to " qualify" the American directors. The trial would naturally have taken place in the Circuit Court at Carson City, Nevada, and before a jury. But by stipulation of the parties, the case was tried in San Francisco, before Hon. Stephen J. Field, Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, Hon. Lorenzo Sawyer, United States Circuit Judge of the Ninth Circuit, and Hon. E. W. Hillyer, United States District Judge, for the District of Nevada. The hearing began July 23d, 1877. The witnesses occupied two weeks, and the argument of counsel three days. Very eminent lawyers were engaged on both sides; for the plaintiff, Messrs. Solomon Heydenfeldt, R. S. Mesick, John Garber, and H. J. Thornton; for the defendant, Messrs. S. M. Wilson, Thomas Wren, and J. J. Williams. The court held the case under advisement until August 22d, when Mr. Justice Field delivered its unanimous opinion in favor of the plaintiff. The action was a complaint in ejectment, and an appeal was taken to the United States Supreme Court. The questions at issue between the Eureka and the Richmond Company in this suit, comprised several points in the construction of the mining law of the United States, and its relation to the customs and regulations of the mining districts, which possess an importance and an applicability far beyond the limits of the case in which they arose. Pulverized high-volatile A bituminous coal was gasified with oxygen and superheated steam in a pressure-gasification pilot plant equipped for slurry feeding. The minimum ratio of water to pulverized coal that could be pumped satisfactorily as a slurry was about 1 to 1. Heating this slurry produced a suspension of coal in superheated steam having a steam-to-coal ratio greater than the 0.3 to 1 proportion that is considered optimum for pressure gasification of pulverized coal. A steam separator removed enough steam to provide ratios down to about 0.5 to 1, but a 0.3 to 1 ratio was not achieved. Gasification of Sewickley coal produced a synthesis gas containing about 36 percent H2, 46 percent CO, and 13 percent CO2, Gas output, gas composition, and coal and oxygen requirements were Virtually the same as for a pilot plant equipped for fluidized-coal feeding. Typical results from the slurry-fed plant at 300 psig were carbon gasified, 95 percent; coal requirement, 34 lb/M (thousand) std cu ft CO + H2 produced; oxygen requirement, 365 std cu ft/M std cu ft CO + H2 produced. The results showed that the two feeding methods are equally satisfactory from the standpoint of gasification. A choice between a fluidized-coal gasification process or a slurry gasification process depends on considerations relating to the coal-feeding phase itself, including capital and operating costs, manpower requirements, safety, and flexibility of operation.

With the exception of the extreme northeastern part of the state, Mississippi lies wholly within the Gulf Coastal Plains. The largest structural feature definitely proved is the so-called Jackson structure1 in the central part of the state. This structure is mainly the result of the burial of an igneous ridge on the old sea floor. The ridge trended in a northwest direction from about the town of Jackson in Hinds County into southeastern Arkansas. The present structure is the burial of the ridge. Recent detailed surface work by major oil companies has suggested smaller structures in other parts of the state, but so far they have not been definitely proved. Also considerable magnetometer and seismographic work has been done in the northern and central part of the state. The results of the operation of the seismograph are not yet available, but the magnetometer located many "magnetic highs" in this part of the state. Outside of the area of the Jackson structure, the exact cause for this magnetic variation is not known. In a portion of south Mississippi, considerable seismographic work has been done recently in an attempt to locate salt domes. While the details are not available, it has apparently met with little success. Prospecting by districts during the past year may be summarized as follows: Five wells of importance were drilled in the Amory district of east Mississippi. This district comprises all or parts of Monroe, Lee, Itawamba, Prentiss, .Alcorn and Tishomingo counties. Small gas was discovered at about 2500 feet. Several wells were drilled in the. Jackson district which is located in part or all of Hinds, Rankin, Madison and Yazoo counties. Some of these wells were abandoned and one was shut down most of the year

Mexicana de Cobre, which is part of Grupo Mexico, carried out studies for the construction of a copper refinery in the La Caridad Metallurgical Complex located in Nacozari, in the state of Sonora, Mexico. After the studies were concluded, the decision was made to construct a 180,000 t/y refinery using the state of the art permanent cathode Kidd Process. The basic engineering was developed by Fluor Daniel and the detail engineering and the construction were carried out in record time by the Mexican company Bufete Industrial. During the construction phase, Grupo Mexico decided to expand the refinery, and actions were taken to increase its capacity by an additional 120,000 t/y; the final result was a refinery capable of producing 300,000 tonnes of grade A cathode per year. Construction began in January 1996, and the operation of the first stage began on July 1, 1997. The operation of the second stage commenced on January 7, 1998. The capacity of the first stage was reached in November, 1997 and the total capacity of the refinery was achieved in May, 1998. This presentation describes the process and equipment installed in the refinery, the steps leading to the start-up, the operation and the results obtained during the first two years, the handling of anodes with high impurity contents, and the problems confronted and the way they have been solved. It also includes personnel productivity, the control parameters and the most relevant data on the operation of the process.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated leaching of chalcopyrite with sulfuric acid-oxygen under conditions anticipated during in situ leaching. A central composite experimental design was chosen to study oxygen pressures of 150, 300, and 450 psi, leach temperatures of 35?, 65°, and 95° C, oxygen-to-chalcopyrite mass ratios of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5, leach times of 8, 16, and 24 hours, initial acid strengths of 0.6, 1.2, and 1.8 g H2SO4/g chalcopyrite and pyrite to chalcopyrite mass ratios of 0, 1, and 2. The leaching kinetics were consistent with the shrinking core model. A quadratic response surface model was used to determine linear and interaction effects of the design factors on rate constants from Arrhenius correlations.

As mine venti1ation systems become more complex, it is increasingly difficult to supply fresh air to the working face. A high percentage of the fresh air entering a mine never reaches the working face because it short circuits through stoppings and doors, exiting the mine without being utilized. When ventilation limits are reached, the only option presently available to most U.S. mines is to sink a new shaft - an extremely expensive undertaking that many companies cannot afford. Reusing or recirculating a percentage of ventilating airflow may make it possible for some mines to remain operational while maintaining a safe environment for workers. Such a study was performed at a trona mine in Granger. Wyoming. A vane axial fan was used to recirculate approximately 9.4 m /s (20,000 cfm), 25% of the total ventilating airflow, back to the working face area of a three-entry continuous miner section. This study involved two evaluations: the first when the face was 305m (1,000 ft) from the recirculation fan, the second when the face was 610m (2,000 ft) from the fan. The evaluation consisted of monitoring the mine atmosphere for respirable dust, methane (CH4). carbon monoxide (CO), and nitric oxide (NO), at various locations in the intake and return entries. Several shifts were monitored, with and without the recirculation system in operation. With the recirculation system in operation. there was an increase in measured respirable dust concentrations in the intake along with a slight increase in the mine temperature (1.67°C). There were also some minor changes in CO and NO levels in the intake entry, but this seemed to depend on the proximity of the instruments to the turn-around point for the diesel haulage vehicles, than to whether the recirculation system was or was not in use.
