Mineral commodity prices comprise one of the key criteria in the selection of mining stocks. We contend that of the three principal elements of mineral commodity prices, spot price, forward price and long-term price, one has a greater impact on the share valuation processes used by investors. This research paper examines the extent to which each of these elements influences the valuation process. The intention is to provide investors in mining stocks with a greater understanding of how fluctuations of commodity prices over time affect the prices of the mining stocks they hold, or intend to sell or buy. Three mineral commodities, gold, silver, and copper, were used as case studies, since market data on these commodities is readily available in the public domain. Nine market indices covering all three mineral commodities were selected. These are based on clearly defined criteria with the intention of eliminating ambiguity and to test for correlation with the three sets of mineral commodity prices. Nine mining companies, which were not the primary drivers of the relevant indices employed in the study, were used to validate the results obtained from the indices in order to avoid duplication of the same correlation during cross-checking. Each commodity price was adjusted for operating costs. For each market index, an average operating cost was calculated from the companies comprising its basket, while each company?s annual operating costs were used for the stocks of the individual companies examined. The data was collected for the period January 2004 to October 2010. This period was further split up into three sub-periods to account for the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) period that started in mid-2008. We conclude that mining stock prices are correlated with mineral commodity prices, but with spot and forward prices exhibiting stronger correlations than long-term price. This finding should be useful for evaluation purposes. Where cash flow methodologies such as discounted cash flow or earnings per share are used to value ordinary shares and commodity prices are required to estimate future cash flows, the findings suggest that spot prices should be used as opposed to long-term prices. Due to the inherent limitations of current methods of disposal of end of life polymeric materials, avenues are researched towards developing alternative, environmentally friendly and economic recycling processes. Different polymeric materials (i.e. rubber, high density polyethylene (HDPE) and polyethylene therephtalate (PET)), quite distinct in terms of chemical structure and composition, were considered in the present study as carbon resources in EAF steelmaking. Investigations were conducted in both laboratory and industrial scale steelmaking to assess the effectiveness of using these materials as carbon sources for slag foaming in EAF steelmaking. Slag foaming is important because it enhances furnace efficiency.

Under a very high vacuum of 10-8 torr the transfer of terrestrial mineral beneficiation methods to the vacuum ambient of extraterrestrial locations such as the lunar surface was investigated. In the size range for the electro-static and magnetic separation of ores (minus 35 plus 150 mesh) there is no adhesion of particles produced by crushing and grinding due to the limited contact area, and for repeated contacts area size has a frequency of occurrence in accordance to the normal law. The photoelectric effect which is successful in separating a few minerals in an air ambient has a wider application in a vacuum, while the lack of air viscosity and sound transmission provides for high feed velocities and the adaptation of particle vibration to dispersion and grinding. Contact electrification is reversible upon return to atmosphere.

Minimum safe distance (MSD) calculations are used widely in military applications to determine safe standoff distances for breaching personnel. Accurate safe distances and an understanding of blast wave propagation are critical to preventing traumatic brain injury. These calculations are often based on spherical charges in open air. However, applications including explosive breaching use planar charges rather than spherical. Previous studies analyzed the shock propagation of a square planar charge of sheet explosive and concluded the anisotropic pattern conflicted with the Kingery Bulmash (KB) and MSD spherical models. It has been determined that these predictions do not adequately predict the realistic pressures in all directions and the trend has shown to be consistent across multiple charge geometries. In this series of experiments, pressures were collected from reference spheres and rectangular geometries of detonating cord and sheet explosive commonly used in breaching and improvised demolition for this comparison. This common configuration showed pressure differences at varying angles to the charge with the highest pressures measured at the 90° position perpendicular to the “door” to be breached. Lower pressures were found at the 0° and 15° positions where the breachers would normally be standing. The reflected shock from a surface such as a door was incorporated in a semi-confined situation and added to the shock observed by the breachers. Urban environments include many surrounding structures for these reflections to occur and further testing is necessary in such an environment to determine the full-scale impact. These findings may be useful to develop improved MSD calculations for breaching applications based on charge geometry, orientation to the blast, and nearby structures.

Cyanides are present as a dilute constituent of streams from a variety of metallurgical and mineral-processing operations. In addition, a cyanide concentration in excess of approximately 100ppb is toxic to aquatic life, and consequently these operations require a waste-treatment process to reduce the already dilute cyanide species by several orders of magnitude. Furthermore, the waste streams may have flowrates in excess of a million gallons per day. The paper reports on research conducted with a laboratory?scale electrochemical porous (graphite felt) electrode (anode) flow-reactor, which was conducted in conjunction with a computer-aided simulation of a mathematical model describing the intrinsic rate-phenomena associate with the electrode processes. The laboratory-scale cell, of rectilinear geometry, was found to be capable of reducing a feed-stream anolyte (KCN-KOH and supporting electrolyte of a single salt ? K2SO4) with a cyanide concentration of 10ppm, to less than 100ppb, at current efficiencies in the neighborhood of 50%. The computer simulation of the cell performance based on the mathematical model (and constraints imposed for tractability) was found to provide only for qualitative agreement.

From 2015 to 2021, five massive pillar collapses occurred at four underground stone mines in the eastern United States. These events resulted in powerful airblasts that damaged mine infrastructure and mobile equipment, seriously injured miners, and disrupted underground travelways. Each of these pillar collapses propagated through the overlying strata, causing a subsidence basin on the surface. Pillar collapses are particularly hazardous for miners because they can occur with little warning and can affect miners that are far from the pillar collapse area. The following case studies show that certain factors may increase the likelihood of a pillar collapse. THIS paper is an effort to explain in a simple manner the fundamental principles involved in examining a clay deposit for both quantity and quality and in operating a clay mine, either open-pit or underground, so that the best quality of finished material can be made from the raw material available. The writer is aware that what is recommended in this paper is everyday practice in many refractories plants and in some other heavy-clay products plants, but observations made while visiting practically every clay mine in Ohio have convinced him that the practices herein discussed are not as widely used as their importance warrants. It is true that the problem of mining for quality is more acute in refractories plants than in most heavy-clay products plants, yet some of the latter are finding it profitable to pay more than ordinary attention to the selection and blending of their raw materials. It is hoped that this short paper may prove helpful to some who are now finding it difficult to produce a uniform product of as high quality as their clay deposit seems to warrant. The coordination of the work of the clay mine or pit with the manufacturing plant, to the end that the best product possible be made from the raw material available, presupposes a rather intimate knowledge of the clay deposit. The knowledge must include not only information of the amount of clay-available but also rather detailed information about both vertical and horizontal variations in quality of the clay. This information should cover three things: quality, quantity, and location.

"The results of tests carried out on a 3-in. hydrocyclone have shown the linear relationships that exist between: (1) the flow-rate of water in the feed to and the overflow product from the cyclone; (2) the flow-rate of solids in the feed to and the underflow product from the cyclone. The underflow size distribution of an operation has been found to be linear and its usefulness in evaluating particle distribution in the cyclone has been discussed. Effects of design and operating variables on the above relationships have been discussed. The performance of this 3-in. hydrocyclone has been compared with that of a 20-in. cyclone, the results for which are available in the literature."

"In 1995 and 2003, the Mine Safety Health Administration (MSHA) conducted surveys to determine the number of atmospheric monitoring systems (AMS) being used in underground coal mines in the United States. The survey reports showed data for the different AMS manufacturers, the different types of equipment monitored, and the different type of gas sensors and their locations. Since the last survey in 2003, MSHA has changed the regulation requirements for early fire detection along the belt haulage entries. As of December 31, 2009, point-type heat sensors were prohibited for use for an early fire detection system; instead carbon monoxide (CO) sensors are now required. This report will examine the number of AMS currently used in underground mines in the United States to see if there is a change in their use. The locations and parameters monitored by AMS are also discussed. INTRODUCTION The last survey conducted by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) on atmospheric monitoring systems (AMS) used in underground coal mines in the United States (US) was in 2003 [1]. The survey report states that since 1995 there had been a steady increase in the use of AMS in underground coal mines as the technology of CO sensors was improved by manufacturers. AMS had become more reliable and some CO sensors could be purchased with the capability to discriminate between the CO produced from a fire versus CO produced from diesel equipment. This increase in reliability had reduced the number of false alarms and the response time. The faster response time to a developing fire allowed for the miners to take the necessary action to put out the fire or exit the mine. It should also be noted that at the time of last MSHA survey, some mines still used point-type heat sensors to detect the presence of a fire on conveyor belts. This detection method works by measuring the temperature of the air around the sensor. As a fire starts to develop, smoke and hot gases are produced from the combustion process, and the air is heated up. Once the air and gases reach a designated temperature detected by the point-type heat sensor, a fire alarm signal is generated. Studies have shown that the response times for detecting the presence of a fire using CO sensors are much shorter than using point-type heat sensors [2]. Finally, since the last MSHA survey, regulations have changed on the type of automatic fire detection systems permitted to be used in conveyor belt entries. As of December 31, 2009, point-type heat sensors are not permitted to be used for fire detection in underground coal mines in the US; instead CO sensors are required as a replacement (30 CFR 75.1103-4). This study will examine how the changing of the above regulations has impacted the use of CO sensors in underground coal mines in the US compared to their use based on the last MSHA survey. Importantly, in the previous MSHA survey, the data was recorded for producing and non-producing coal mines. In this study, only the data from the producing coal mines was recorded. Data was collected from a total of 235 coal mines for this study with the help of the MSHA district offices."

"The article presents the materials about the appropriateness of the use of rental indices to assess the effectiveness of the use of deposits of rare earth elements (REE). The authors suggest from the standpoint of rent payments to rate for the owner the possibility of using the anticipated rental income as the indicator for the analysis of preferences and economic significance of enrichment of extracted raw materials in the emerging field of rare earth metals (REE). Usually from ore mined at the fields, for flotation technology to produce concentrates with collective REE, then they are subjected to chemical-metallurgical processing of the received products are divided into pure oxides, chemical compounds or isolated from them pure metals and alloys. This commercial product is shipped to the buyer. REE were a non-renewable natural resources, so the calculations for determining differential and specific rent showed that during the development of the technologies of mineral processing of a specific field it is necessary to consider what the expected rental income depends on the magnitude of differential rent is related to the volume of production of REE for the whole planned period of exploitation of natural resources. This income is determined by the amount of stock field. For long-term exploitation of the deposit is observed in almost direct proportional dependence between the annual differential rent and the rental income. The decrease in rents in the long run is determined by the change in the composition of ores included in the extracted raw materials and the balance between light and heavy REE. The largest 70% reduction of the rent projected for ""cerium"" fields, while for ""yttrium"" these losses are considerably smaller. Tomtor, Chuktukon and Katuginskoye Russian deposits are characterized by a level of rent that is comparable to the mastered foreign sources of REE. Thus, the enrichment of minerals with REM in the domestic deposits is quite competitive at the world level. INTRODUCTION Deposits of rare earth metals (REE) are non-renewable resources that should be developed and used so that it would be possible to provide a reduction due to payment of appropriate resources for future generations. This compensation, due to the reduction of natural resources, can be carried out both in natural and in economic terms (1). When analyzing economic compensation options, particular attention should be paid to rental income in assessing the attractiveness of using different REE deposits. It is known that absolute and differential rents are summands when calculating the value of natural rents. The value of the absolute natural rent is proportional to the unit price of the product obtained from mineral raw materials and sold on the commodity market. Limitations, as well as the use in production processes and business, contribute to the gradual reduction of natural resources, which increases their consumer value and affects the price of commodity products from primary raw materials."

Exploration for undersea polymetallic sulfide mineral resources with high economic potential would be more effective given an ability to predict sites with particularly high gold contents (averaging say > 10 ppm Au). Herzig et al (1993) addressed this issue shortly after recognition that deposits in the back-arc Lau Basin (average 3.8 ppm Au) were enriched in gold relative to mid-ocean ridge sites (average 1.2 ppm Au). Small but significant numbers of hydrothermal sites with massive sulfide deposits averaging >10 ppm Au have since been discovered. The principal genetic factors underlying gold enrichment include depositional processes at and below the seabed, and the source of gold. It is timely to consider whether resolution of their relative importance can be translated into practical criteria for exploration strategies focused on especially gold-rich deposits. Comparing the ?grade? of seafloor deposits using analyses cited in research papers is fraught with difficulty, but there is no alternative at present to assuming that such averages provide an initial tenor guide. On this basis, four known polymetallic hydrothermal sites from convergent plate margins fit the exceptional-gold category with >10 ppm ?average? Au, while one from a divergent margin comes close: Sunrise (Myojin Knolls; 20 ppm ?average? Au) and Suiyo Seamount (28 ppm Au) in the Izu-Bonin Arc are frontal arc volcanoes dominated by rhyolite and dacite respectively, contrasting with more common mafic neighbor edifices (Iizasa et al., 1999). In both cases gold-rich massive sulfides occur in summit calderas with significant development of pumiceous volcaniclastic rocks, at depths around 1300 and 1370 m respectively. In the Eastern Manus Basin, PACMANUS (~1700 m; 14 ppm Au) and Suzette (~1550 m; 22 ppm Au) occur along the crests of volcanic ridges dominated by dacite/rhyodacite and andesite/mafic dacite respectively (Binns, 2004). Caldera structures are lacking. Although the Eastern Manus Basin is tectonically a rifted back-arc, its submarine volcanic edifices (picritic basalt to rhyodacite) have distinctly arc-style geochemical and isotopic affinities, differing from more typical back-arc basin basalts at the spreading axis further west (central Manus Basin). Probably as a consequence of transpression and a marked rupture in the New Britain subduction zone, submarine arc volcanism has here extended into the rifted back-arc region.

My. first paper, read at the Cobalt Meeting of the Institute,1 July, 1907, dealt with the behavior of a small Wilfley table when concentrating galena from quartz, the table being fed with natural products, with sized products; and with classified products. Since galena, having a specific gravity of 7.5, is among the heaviest minerals ordinarily concentrated by Wilfley table, it was desirable that a similar set of tests upon a mineral of, lighter weight should be made. Chalcopyrite, of a specific gravity of 4, would have been the best mineral for this purpose, on account of its great importance as an economic mineral, but in carrying out the test, however, I was obliged to content myself with a cupriferous pyrite, the specific gravity of which was 4.68 and the contents in copper 8.80 per cent. Through the kindness of Mr. H. 0. Cummins, this material was obtained from Shasta, Cal.,in very pure, clean, homogeneous condition. It was broken by rolls to 2 mm. in size, taking care to make a minimum of slimes. The quartz used to mix with it was pure, white, New England quartz, broken in the same way to the same size. In studying the accompanying tables, it should be borne in mind that the material concentrated was of low copper-content, and in many cases the quantity fed to the machine was 1 kg: or less.. As a consequence of the smallness of the &apos;quantity treated it was very difficult to adjust the table and get it in condition to do its best work before the feed became exhausted, and for this reason many results were obtained which appear irregular.

Over 2,000 shale gas wells have been drilled in the Pittsburgh Seam longwall reserves. As longwall panels are laid out, some of these shale gas wells must be located in longwall chain pillars. With longwall mining on both sides and the constraint of chain pillar size, gas well in chain pillars are subjected to longwall-induced ground movements and stresses, which could induce deformations in gas well casings Casing deformations are associated with several factors such as overburden geology, surface topography, setback distance, and casing construction. Overburden geology is one important factor that largely determines the locations and levels of deformations in gas well casings Previous NIOSH gas well research has found that casing deformations above the coal seam horizon are smaller under deep cover than unde shallow cover and that casing deformations could occur at the coal seam horizon under deep cover. Recent mine-by cases have provided more insights into the locations and amount of longwall-induced casing deformations as well as the potential occurrence of a large casing deformation at the coal seam horizon. This paper presents three recent mine-by cases with shale gas wells in the chain pillars between two adjacent longwall panels under different overburden depths. Casing deformations were measured by multi-finger caliper surveys and predicted with numerical modeling. With the established numerical model, the effect of overburden depth was further analyzed to investigate the potential occurrence of a large casing deformation at the coal seam horizon under deep cover. These mine-by cases not only provide a general demonstration of how overburden depths can affect longwall-induced stresses and deformations but also give a good indication about the level of casing deformations that could occur under different overburden depths. The study concludes that (1) casing deformations reduce with increase of overburden depths at the gas well; (2) a cementing alternative with production casing uncemented is an effective means to eliminate production casing deformations; and (3) large plastic casing deformation could occur in the production casing at the coat seam horizon under deep cover. The experience and knowledge gained from these mine-by cases would help longwall operators and gaza companies to take appropriate measures to minimize the influence of longwall mining in shale gas wells in chain pillars.

In electrochemical separation of metals, it is necessary to control the potential applied between the electrodes so that only the desired electrode reactions can occur. A knowledge of the minimum potential needed for a given electrode reaction to take place continuously is therefore pertinent to the success of the process. In molten chloride systems at high temperatures, activation polarization is believed to be small,1,2 so the minimum potential needed for the electrolytic decomposition of a molten metal chloride MC1n (n = valence of the metal ion) is therefore essentially the equilibrium electrode potential E of the metal-chlorine galvanic cell in the solution. If the decomposition products are pure M and chlorine at a pressure of p atm, E*Eo-rt/nf in [i] Since EO (the standard electrode potential of MCln) is a constant at a given temperature and R (the gas constant), and F (the Faraday&apos;s constant) are all constants, the variation of E with the electrolytic bath conditions is largely determined by the effect of the latter on the activity of the metal chloride amcln (standard state = pure MC1,). Measurement of E and study of how amCin varies with temperature and concentration, the nature of the solvent, and that of the coexisting solutes are therefore pertinent in the selection of optimum operating conditions for the electrochemical separation of metals. Because of its low melting point, high decomposition potentials of its components, and the low solubility of heavier metals in it, the LiC1-KC1 eutectic melt is a useful solvent and has been used in the electrodeposition of Mo,3Ce,4 and u5 metals. Senderoff and Brenner3 measured the potentials of Zn/Zn++, Fe/Fe++, Cu/Cu+, Mo/Mo+++, and Ag/Ag+ against an Ag/AgCl (pure) reference electrode at 600°C and a concentration of 4.1 mole pct of each chloride and came to the conclusion that complex ion formation occurred in some of the melts. Laitinen and LiUe gave an electromotive force series at 450°C for a number of {Metal/Metal ions (unit activity)) electrodes in LiC1-KC1 eutectic melt, the {pt/pt++ (unit activity)) electrode being chosen as the reference. Walker and Danly7 studied the ther-modynamic properties of NiC12 in LiC1-KC1 eutectic melt over a wide range of temperatures and concentrations by measuring the electrode potential between a nickel electrode and a chlorine electrode in the melt.
