Reckless blasting can have tragic consequences: The death of an innocent traveler, the financial demise of a coal company, and even criminal prosecution. In June 1993, a Tennessee coal mining company was blasting to loosen overburden at its surface mine. The mine was located immediately adjacent to the right-of-way of the northbound lane of Interstate 75. The approved permit included special precautions to be taken when blasting in the area closest to the interstate, including monitoring traffic so as to blast when the northbound lane was clear.

Most Australian mining projects are becoming smaller, more remote and with lower grades of ore. Their small size has been making it harder for mining companies to absorb the large infrastructure costs. This has forced companies to reduce those costs in every way they can. Social factors, environmental groups and even tax laws have added other pressures to force down the infrastructure costs for remote projects. For the last ten years, the downward trend in costs has been marked. It seems certain to continue for years into the Future.

The primary objective of this program was to determine the toxic fume and fire hazard of elastomeric noise abatement materials with a limited effort expended on the evaluation of specific treatments applied to mine timbers. Under the conditions employed, for a dimethyl silicone rubber, formaldehyde presented the major toxic threat; acrolein was the main toxic species for both polyester and polyether urethanes and an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene resin; in the case of flame-retardant styrene-butadiene rubber compositions, hydrogen chloride, and in the case of PFA-treated timber, furfural, were the major toxic compounds. Of the materials studied, the flame-retardant styrene-butadiene rubbers presented the greatest toxic hazard. The generated data have been reduced to toxic load tabulations amenable to employment for potential hazard assessment.

The behavior of dicalcium silicate in NaOH-NaAl(OH)4-Na2CO3 solution is of significance for controlling the silica level in the production of alumina via the sintering process. Dicalcium silicate samples were obtained through a twostep approach: coprecipitation of calcium and silicate from CaCl2-Na2SiO3-NaOH solutions; and calcination of the hydrated precursor at 1200°C for 4 hours. The optimization of the synthesis parameters including temperature, solution concentrations and aging time was also investigated. Xray diffraction (XRD) and chemical analysis show that the calcined solids include dicalcium silicate with trace amounts of wollastonite. The solubility of the synthesized dicalcium silicate in HCl, NaOH, mixed NaOH-NaAl(OH)4 and NaOH-NaAl(OH)4-Na2CO3 solutions was determined. It was found that the solubility increases with increasing HCl and NaOH concentration. The effect of temperature on the solubility in HCl solutions is limited, but the solubility decreases with increasing temperature in NaOH solutions. The solubility of dicalcium silicate in NaOH-NaAl(OH)4 and NaOH-NaAl(OH)4-Na2CO3 solutions was shown to increase with increased temperature, Al(OH)3 and Na2CO3 concentration. The BromleyZemaitis model for the aqueous electrolyte system was selected to predict the solubility of dicalcium silicate. The model’s predictions yielded certain success compared with experimental solubility data.

Acid ferric sulfate solution has been used for heap and dump leaching of low-grade chalcopyrite ores and is being considered as a possible lixiviant for the hydrometallurgical processing of copper sulfide concentrates. For many years, researchers have attempted to explain the leaching behavior of chalcopyrite, since the reaction rate kinetics are extremely slow and seem to be significantly influenced by the nature of the reaction product. A summary of conclusions drawn from reported literature on chalcopyrite leaching is found in the paper by Munoz, Miller, and Wadsworth(1) and more recently by Dutrizac.(2) Lowe(3) and Jones and Peters (4) attributed rate control to a surface reaction. Linge,(5) Dutrizac,(6) Bauer,(7) and researchers at the University of Utah(1,8) reported that the reaction rate is limited by transport in the chalcopyrite lattice or through the elemental sulfur reaction product layer. Munoz et al.(1) presented a model, derived from the Wagner theory of oxidation, which is based on the formation of a protective sulfur layer with rate control by electron transport through the insulating sulfur layer. Numerical simulation of the fluid flow and heat transfer has been carried out for a waste-heat boiler in an Outokumpu type copper flash smelter. In this boiler, SO2-containing off-gas flows into the waste-heat boiler radiation section at about 1350°C. A fraction of cooler off-gas from the electrostatic precipitator at about 200°C was recirculated into the radiation section, and a small amount of ambient air was leaked into the boiler from the bottom. The computational results show that the flow is strongly recirculating and distinctly three dimensional in most of the boiler, particularly in the radiation section. The hot off-gas cooled down rapidly after entering the radiation section due to radiation. The predicted flow pattern and temperature distribution were in a good agreement with laboratory models and industrial measurements.

Several large open pit mines are facing the challenge to design and plan an underground transition to sustain the long term future of their operations. The desired underground method is Block Cave since its natural high productivity and low operating cost that could compete against the open pit cost to mine the final open pit pushbacks. It has been found at several operations where this transition is taking place that the pit limit at which transition is performed is rather deep. This aims to think that perhaps several transition projects have started late in the life of an operation producing an over stress in the transition project and reducing the flexibility in the design of the overall infrastructure and a substantial lost in the complete project NPV. Traditionally the approach to plan open pit underground transition consists of sequentially deciding the final pit using a Lerchs and Grossman type of optimization to find the overall maximum pit shell and then running block cave simulations to find the best footprint for the underground option. The research summarized in this paper is related to the development of an integer linear programming model that aims to compute simultaneously the maximum NPV of the combined option final limit open pit and block cave underground footprint. The model has been tested using two large block models representing two of the current operations in the process of transiting from open pit to underground operations. Finally, the integrated open pit underground transition model is going to be compared to the traditional sequential approach in order to define which method achieves the best NPV. The paper illustrates both case studies in depth.

"Carbon has been the principal reducing agent in producing metals for centuries. Carbon is an inexpensive reducing agent, but also an effective one, as any undergraduate who knows her Ellingham diagrams is aware. Even in the production of aluminum, an electrolytic process, carbon consumed at the anodes serves to reduce the voltage of the Hall-Héroult cell. The interest in reducing the amount of anthropogenic CO2 has led to this examination of whether a switch to hydrogen as a major reductant is feasible and economic. The main source of hydrogen is natural gas and its production entails the generation of CO2; however, that CO2 is more easily captured than, say, the CO2 leaving an iron blast furnace. Calculations and speculations lead to conclusions about whether there is significant benefit to be obtained from such a radical change in our way of producing metals and the approximate cost of such change.IntroductionThe 1991 paper by Forrest and Szekely1 was one of the first to examine the impact of CO2 emissions from the primary metals industries on global climate change. These authors compared data from 1968 and 1985 and reported a drop in carbon emissions from 115.8 million tons to 65.6Mt over this period, the latter figure representing approximately 1% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. Much of this reduction was due to a drop in steel output (with carbon emissions increasing within the aluminum and copper industries in this period) but some were due to technological changes such as increased use of continuous casting. A more recent paper on CO2 emissions, focused on the steel industry in Japan, is that of Ariyama and Sato2. These authors report CO2 emissions of 182.4Mt from the Japanese steel, industry in 2003, down from 194.8Mt in 1990. The former represents 14% of the GHG emissions for Japan in 2003. (Measurements of stable isotopic variations (sulfur, carbon, and oxygen), supplemented by chemical, mineralogical, and petrographic analyses have been used to investigate the processes responsible for : (1) the incorporation of sulfur in coal, and (2) the (development of permineralized peat zones ("coal balls"). Sulfur isotopic results indicate that there are two principal sources of sulfur in the Pennsylvanian coals from the Illinois Basin: (1) "primary" sulfur assimilated by plants (low-sulfur coals), and (2) "secondary" sulfur produced by reactions involving H2S that was produced by the anaerobic reduction of sulfate in seawater which permeated the peat during post-depositional marine transgressions (the dominant source of sulfur in high-sulfur coals). Sulfur isotopic compositions of low-sulfur coals in Several Tertiary basins of Wyoming are consistent with a plant sulfur source. However, the inverse correlation between content and isotopic composition of sulfur observed in coals from the Powder River Basin suggest some "secondary" additions to these low-sulfur coals. Seveeral Quaternary (freshwater pears which were submerged by sea-Level rises during deglaciation over the past 30 ka have sulfur contents and isotopic compositions similar to high-sulfur coals. Carbon and oxygen isotopic compositions of calcareous coal balls from North America and Europe suggest that (1) the carbonate was derived from variable proportions of oxidized plant matter (typically predominant) and inorganic carbonate, and (2) the carbonate minerals were precipitated from fresh-to-brackish waters. Local geochemical and hydrological conditions were apparently more important than regional depositional environments in controlling the source of carbonate and the development of coal balls.

My first paper, read at the Cobalt Meeting of the Institute,' July, 1907, dealt with the behavior of a small Wilfley table when collceiltrating galena from quartz, the table being fed with natural products, with sized products, and with classified products. Since galena, having a specific gravity of 7.5, is among the heaviest minerals ordinarily concentrated by Wilfley table, it was desirable that a similar set of tests upon a mineral of lighter weight should be made. Chalcopyrite, of a specific gravity of 4, would have been the best mineral for this purpose, on account of its great importance as an economic mineral, but in carrying out the test I was obliged to content myself with a cupriferous pyrite, the specific gravity of which was 4.68 and the content in copper 8.80 per cent. Through the kindness of H. 0. Cummins, this material was obtained from Shasta, Cal., in very pure, clean, homogeneous condition. It was broken by rolls to 2 mm. in size, taking care to make a minimum of slimes. The quartz used to mix with it was pure, white, New England quartz, broken in the same way to the same size. In studying the accompanying tables, it should be borne in mind that the material concentrated was of low copper-content, and in many cases the quantity fed to the machine was 1 kg. or less. As a consequence of the smallness of the quantity treated it was very difficult to adjust the table and get it in condition to do its best work before the feed became exhausted, and for this reason many results were obtained which appear irregular.

"INTRODUCTION This is the fourth report of investigations dealing with the cooperative tests between the Bureau of Mines and industry on the use of electrolytic manganese in steelmaking. The first report dealt with the use of electrolytic manganese in the manufacture of stainless steel 3/ the second with its use in acid electric steel practice, 4/ and the third with its use in low-carbon basic open-hearth steelmaking. 2/ A résumé of those investigations E7 appeared in the magazine STEEL. 5/ The present report deals with the use of electrolytic manganese in the manufacture of four types of stainless steel and the new Timken 16-25-6 alloy. The Bureau of Mines supplied The Timken Roller Bearing Co. with 62,000 pounds of electrolytic manganese for use in the tests.The electrolytic manganese was produced at the Bureau of Mines pilot plant, Boulder City, Nev., by the process developed by the Bureau and described in Bulletin 463, Operation of Electrolytic Manganese Pilot Plant, Boulder City, Nev., by J. Iron ore pellets are a preferred feedstock for ironmaking. One method used for pelletizing is the grate-kiln process, first established in 1960.During the past decade, the establishment of new grate-kiln plants has increased rapidly, especially in China, and new constructors of pellet plants have started to operate in the market. It is well known that the grate-kiln method yields a superior and more consistent pellet quality compared with the straight-grate process. However, certain issues exist with the grate-kiln plant, which are discussed here, together with proposed practical solutions.

[The discovery in 1934 that carbonaceous materials, such as coal, peat, and lignite, when treated with concentrated sulfuric acid, were given cation or bate-exchange properties opened up a field of new materials with many interesting possibilities. These hydrogen exchangers, as they were called, were so superior to the impractical hydrogen exchangers made from natural and synthetic zeolites tat they were accepted immediately by the water-conditioning industry. A noteworthy advantage of the carbonaceous exchangers is that they are nonsiliceous, hence they do not give up silica to the water as do the natural and synthetic zeolites, especially if the hard water is corrosive. For this reason the new exchangers found immediate favor in boiler-feed-water conditioning.]

Innovation in the mining industry is critical when facing ever growing challenges, like the need to increase safety, reduce social and environmental impact, deal with commodities price fluctuations among others. However, successful innovation is not only the product of technological innovation, but it is also dependent on Innovation Management, which consists of changing the way a company fosters innovation, creating a new structure able to leverage technology knowledge and the ability to convert this knowledge in value. This paper presents a restructure option for innovation that focus on R&D development linked to business needs and company strategy. This new system was approached based on four fundamental blocks for innovation management (Approach, Organization, Resources and Metrics), showing how the technology master plan and a management tool are able to bring together all aspects necessary for the proper operation of the system. The new system confirmed the importance of having the initiatives organized as innovation roadmaps, connecting techno-scientific development with the company needs through the use of KPIs that are relevant to the business.

The cost of capital is the rate at which a project's cash flow should be discounted to obtain the Net Present Value. The cost of capital is a weighted average of both debt and equity funds of a company, on an after tax basis. Two methods are described for calculating a company's cost of equity, the Dividend Valu- ation Model and, more importantly, the Capital Asset Pricing Model. A worked example is presented where the cost of capital was obtain- ed for two resource companies. The application of the cost of capital was illustrated by way of a mining equipment replacement problem. The paper outlines refinements and problems that may be encountered with the use of the cost of capital, and concludes that it is an integral part of any project evaluation.

The Emerald Mine No. 1, located in southwestern Pennsylvania is presently owned and operated by Cyprus Minerals of Englewood, Colorado. High volatile bituminous coal is produced from the Pittsburgh No. 8 seam by both longwall and continuous mining methods. The coal is then mechanically cleaned on site utilizing a combination of heavy media separation and froth flotation methods prior to shipment to both the metallurgical and steam coal markets. The Emerald Mine is presently producing 2.8 million raw tons per year, while liberating approximately 6.5 million ft per day of methane. In light of the methane liberation rate, ventilation requirements have been significant and have always received utmost priority and consideration. Figure 1 shows the locations of the current and proposed shafts. Emerald utilizes two Joy (Model M120-58-880) axial vane fans on shafts No. 1, No. 2R, No. 3R. (one operational, one stand-by) The use of computer simulation of various ventilation networks was initially employed during the design stages (1975-1977) and has been utilized through the present. Obviously, the initial planning, under the ownership of Lykes Resources, was strictly theoretical. All the quantities were proposed and the resistances were based on prior simulations of other mines and mathematical formulas. However, once the mine was moderately developed, actual values were recorded and utilized. This paper presents a compilation of physical properties of rocks from the Bushveld Complex. The database consists of more than 900 measurements each of thermal conductivity and density. The data are well distributed from localities around the Complex and most rock types are well represented. Thermal conductivity and density are shown to vary widely in the ranges 1.8-4.2 W m-1K-1and 2600-4200 kg m-3respectively. Although only 190 heat capacity measurements are available, this parameter is quite uniform for most rock types present, 800-900 J kg-1K-1, except for chromitite, which has a lower average, 750 J kg-1K-1. Rocks encountered in deep platinum mines are particularly well characterized and this has important implications for prediction of mine refrigeration requirements. The heat flux into a semi-infinite region with properties typical of the Bushveld Complex as a function of time is substantially lower than an equivalent model for the Witwatersrand Basin.

Newmont has been on a focused path of improving operations for many years. After the merger of Newmont and Santa Fe Pacific Gold, Newmont created significant synergies of over $50 million per year in Nevada, primarily through optimal ore movements and consolidation of various functions. During the current period of low gold and copper prices, Newmont has refocused its efforts on efficient operations worldwide. This paper will describe the methods and programs that continue to be implemented at Newmont's many mine facilities in Nevada. Newmont has used a combination of computer technology, optimal use of infrastructures, procurement strategies, functional consolidation, enhanced mine planning and a variety of available metallurgical processing options to decrease the cost of operations and increase profitability.
