In addition to developing various types of coal-interface detection systems, the US Bureau of Mines is actively involved in developing a coal rib-thickness monitoring system for high wall mining applications. One particular system that shows promise uses a ground-penetrating radar system to detect the coal-air boundaries of coal ribs. Based on preliminary laboratory and field tests, results indicate that this method can be applied successfully in highwall mines to maintain a constant rib thickness. The coal seam should be relatively clean in the vicinity of the antenna (e.g., have minimal partings or dirt bands) for best results.

"The nature high carbon graphite with fine particle size has low commercial value because of its narrow application range. In order to improve its value, this paper has studied the methods for nature spherical graphite. The nature spherical graphite can be used as the battery material in the field of electronic product battery and new energy automobile battery, basis on the physicochemical characteristics and particle feature of graphite. In this research, the Fixed Carbon (FC) grade of the graphite sample is more than 95.0% and the particle size of the graphite sample is from +325 mesh to -100 mesh. There are many methods for nature spherical graphite, including the fluidized bed airflow mill, the hydro-spheroidization mill and micropowder mill. The testing results indicate that the method of ACM micropowder mill is the best because the spherical shaping ratio and production yield of spherical graphite are both the best.According to the testing results of the ACM micropowder mill, the best process includes two stages of coarse crushing, four stages of fine crushing and twelve stages of shaping. And two kinds of spherical graphite products can be got, which are the product of D50=22.85 µm and the product of D50=15.43µm, and the whole yield of them is up to 54.43%. So, it lays a foundation for the high value utilization of this kind of graphite resources.INTRODUCTION Graphite is isomer of the diamond. Graphite ore resources are mainly concentrated in China, Brazil, India, followed by Czech, Korea, Mexico, Canada and other countries. Graphite ore has lots of characteristics by itself crystal structure, such as good resistance to high temperature, electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, thermal shock resistance, good lubricity, plasticity, chemical stability and so on. So, Graphite is widely used in metallurgy, machinery, electrical, chemical, petroleum, nuclear industry, defense industry and other areas. [1,2,3] Natural graphite ore has low geological Fixed Carbon (FC) grade. FC grade should be enriched to more than 94.0% by mineral processing. [1,2] The particle size composition of this high carbon graphite affects its application value. The part of +100 mesh particle size has high application value. The part of -100 mesh particle size has low value because of its limited application field. In order to improve the value of-100 mesh particle size, this part high carbon graphite can be made into spherical graphite. And the value of the spherical graphite is great, it is more than 8 times of the feed. This paper has lots of tests for spherical graphite preparing with the fine particle size natural high carbon graphite. And it lays a foundation for the high value of this kind of resource."

"The Stump Lake mining camp is in Nicola mining division of southern British Columbia. It lies about halfway between the cities of Kamloops and Merritt.The deposits at Stump Lake are among the earliest lode discoveries of British Columbia, many of the claims having been staked between 1882 and 1885. A considerable amount of work was done prior to 189Cl, after which very little was done until 1916. Since that time mining has been carried on at intervals, much of it on the same deposits, by a number of companies, including the Donahue Mines Corporation, the Planet Mines and Reduction Company, the Nicola Mines and Metals Company, the Consolidated Nicola Goldfields, Limited, and others. According to the British Columbia Department of Mines, total production from the area has been: gold, 8,520 oz.; silver, 259,413 oz.; copper, 40,822 lb.; lead, 2,208,859 lb.; and zinc, 367,869 lb. Most of the production has come from the Enterprise vein and a branch of the Enterprrsethe King William vein."

AMONG the fellow prospectors of Black Jack Newman, locator of the claims that became the Miami mine, were J. D. Coplen and Bud Woodson. Woodson was in the district when the Bloody Tanks Indian massacre occurred, near the present town of Miami. He was a prospector long before Jack Newman worked in a mine, and for years he had done assessment work on some of the claims that Coplen acquired for his Inspiration company. Woodson recalls that a Scotch geologist from Morenci once visited his claims; and that the geologist tried to get the Phelps Dodge company interested in the property, but without success. Coplen interested some people in Kansas City in his claims that lay west of Newman's. He induced them to organize the Inspiration Mining Co., and by 1908 this company controlled 23 claims, which had been prospected in desultory fashion by a series of adits. One of these, near the Keystone property, encountered some lean copper-bearing rock, but later development failed to disclose any substantial quantity of ore at this particular point. Coplen, as general manager, in September, 1908, was negotiating with several exploration companies which at the time were on the lookout for low-grade copper properties. As a matter of fact, when J. Parke Channing visited Globe, in December, 1906, F. C. Alsdorf showed him the Inspiration claims as well as Newman's. Channing evinced little interest in an option on Inspiration because he could get so much better terms from Newman. He decided to concentrate his work on the Newman claims, with the idea that if he were successful in developing ore, he could later get Inspiration on terms at least equally good. Subsequently, the United States Smelting & Refining Co., which has since added "Mining" to its corporate name, took an option on Inspiration.

Mineral processing plants include different stages like crushing, grinding, classification and concentration, all of which have partially affect the final product. To identify and solve the related problems of each stage, process audition should be carried out continuously to find the major solutions of improving product and decreasing the maintenance and operating costs. The Iranian Gohar-Zamin iron ore beneficiation plant consists of equipment such as gyratory and cone crushers, high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR), ball mill, dry and wet double-deck vibrating screens, hydrocyclones cluster, magnetic drum separators, thickener and horizontal vacuum belt filters. The defects of initial design as well as current non-standard operating conditions of equipment were monitored and detected and the opportunities for process optimisation were presented as follows: establishing the control loop of power draw for cone crushers, the modification of feeding chute in cone crushers to minimise the non-uniform wear of parts, removing segregation in the fresh feed bin and screen’s circulating load chute in order to provide the proper feed to HPGR, reducing wear rate on HPGR rolls surfaces, decreasing the amount of rejected materials in screen, equalising the solid content and particle size distribution (PSD) of feed in all magnetic drum separators and equalising the PSD of hydrocyclones overflow. This paper provides a guideline for the mineral processing industry to focus its efforts on process design to deliver the efficiency with minimum capital costs. This report describes a method of measuring and analyzing the initial deformation which occurs in the medium surrounding a mine accessway as the opening is created. Discussed are (1) the hypothesis upon which the research is based; (2) the in situ rock-deformation measuring equipment developed; (3) the field tests, consisting of measuring the deformation of the medium around two 4-foot-diameter raise bores as the boring progressed; and (4) a finite-element technique to correlate theoretical with experimental results, using elastic theory. Described also are the raise-bore operation and performance. The instrumentation developed proved to have the sensitivity and resolution necessary to measure rock deformation around a full-scale raise bore during excavation. Tests show the relationships of rock deformation to progress of the raise boring and to time. The initial deformation of the opening appeared to be elastic. Using the deformation records and an estimated field stress, the modulus of elasticity was determined for the rock mass. In addition, the importance of this type of measurement in assessing support-problem areas is discussed.

"Johnson Matthey has developed the first diesel particulate filter (DPF) for underground mining that controls particulate matter (PM) at the same time as maintaining emissions of NO2 at or below engine baseline levels. DPF technology is critical for controlling PM which is classified as a carcinogen, but passively regenerating systems rely on the use of oxidation catalysts that can potentially increase NO2 emissions. This paper reviews the development of low-NO2 PM control technology and the results from testing this technology underground on diesel mining equipment. KEYWORDS Decomposition catalyst, Diesel particulate filter (DPF), Diesel particulate matter, Mining Continuously Regenerating Trap (CRT®), NO2, SCR INTRODUCTION The introduction of diesel particulate filter (DPF) technology on heavy duty diesel (HDD) engines has been an important step towards addressing the clean air and health concerns for mining companies. Control of diesel particulate matter (PM) emitted from diesel engines is already being implemented for on- and off-road vehicles, and similar legislation is being prepared for mining equipment. In addition to PM, the diesel emission control strategies (DECS) also reduce carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC). Some DECS control oxides of nitrogen, or NOx, which is composed of NO and NO2. Johnson Matthey has led the development of emission control technologies for diesel engines for almost 30 years. Over the last ten years alone JM has supplied over 3 million Continuously Regenerating Trap (CRT®) DPF systems for on-road vehicles, and over 200,000 systems for off-road vehicles. The patented CRT technology combines a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) with a DPF to effectively trap harmful PM from diesel exhaust, while removing CO and HC. The DOC converts part of the engine NOx to NO2, which reacts with the trapped soot to regenerate the filter. As engines become more fuel efficient, less waste heat enters the exhaust. This can be a disadvantage for after-treatment systems as it leads to lower catalyst operating temperatures. The CRT system regenerates passively, without addition of heat, at temperatures that are typical of diesel engine exhaust. JM recently launched the Mining CRT system which integrates CRT technology with NO2 abatement to reduce PM and tailpipe NO2 from underground diesel mining equipment. This is the first technology proven to control both PM and NO2 emissions for a cleaner, healthier working environment. The Mining CRT is also cost-effective compared to other technologies."

"PURPOSE OF INVESTIGATIONOf more than 300 bituminous mines examined by Crichton 5 and his assistants in connection with litigation in Indian Creek Valley, Payette County, Pa., only four were found to have alkaline water. That work and many observations from of the authors have shown the general prevalence or acid drainage from bituminous coal mines. In connection with investigations pertinent to coal-mine drainage that are being conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines, it was noted with considerable interest therefore, that a mine in the Thick Freeport bed about 20 miles north of Pittsburgh had no acid water in the workings, As it was thought that this condition might be common to all mines,this condition in this bed most of them were visited, samples of the outflow and from different parts of the mine inside were examined, and such general information as was available was gathered.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe authors acknowledge with thanks the courteous assistance of mine officials in connection with collecting the data for this paper, and of the analytical and coal laboratories of the Bureau of Mines for analyses."

The La Fontaine Tunnel in Montreal, Quebec is currently undergoing major structural rehabilitation work and systems upgrade work to comply with current codes, standards and best practices in fire life safety and to extend its lifespan of this 55-year-old immersed tube tunnel for at least another 40 years. The paper discusses design consideration of ongoing works that include structural analyses to evaluate repair strategies for the post-tensioned reinforced caissons, the scheme to repair two leaky joints between caissons, the design of passive fire protection that involved in situ and real scale laboratory tests, and other tunnel systems upgrades.

"Within the research project “Mine Development” (Fettweis and Moser, 1990) a PC-based mine database has been built up since 1991 and so far includes detailed technical and economic data of about 150 under-ground hardrock mines in industrialized countries worldwide. These data represent about 50% of the underground hardrock mines in west and central Europe, Scandinavia, United States, Canada and Australia (Fig. 1). The mining operations included in the database have been visited directly and analyzed with respect to their deposit conditions, their general design and layout and also their operational and economic performance.The main aim of the Mine Database is to make a contribution to an improved planning of new underground hardrock mines. An analysis of current mine planning practices shows, that both personnel and company experience is still a dominant factor in planning new underground hardrock operations. Through the information included in the Mine Database the experience of a single per-son or company is supplemented by the experience of a wider group of people. The Mine Database makes the huge amount of experience that is available worldwide in the field of under-ground mining accessible for new mining projects. From that a contribution to a more reliable mine planning procedure based on the performance of existing mining operations is expected.In addition to its use in planning new mining operations, the Mine Database can con-tribute to the exchange of technical data among different mining operations, especially on equipment performance, etc. Such an information service is offered by the Department of Mining Engineering & Mineral Economics in Leoben and is already being used by different mining companies. To respect proprietory information, company specific information is not released under any circumstances.The cost of building up the Mine Database, so far, is about US$500.000 — two thirds of which is labour, and one third, travel."

In order to remain viable today, corporations must view the environment as a strategic issue, and integrate environmental management throughout the organization. Corporate programs that used to be based primarily on regulatory compliance now must emphasize strategic environmental management systems, and must integrate these environmental systems with basic business functions. The mining industry today is global, and must have an organizational structure that can embrace different cultures, physical settings, and regulatory regimes. Sound environmental management practices are not different from good management principles. An effective environmental management system should be a complementary system to an organization?s overall management framework, integrated and aligned with the existing management structure. Integrating environmental management into core business functions is just good business. An effective environmental management system is a critical component of a company?s commitment to environmental, social and economic accountability. This paper presents the elements of the Kinross Gold Corporation strategic environmental management system and discusses the integration of the environmental management system into the core business functions throughout the Company

The 70th Regular Meeting of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute convened at the Steamboat Village Inn, Steamboat Springs, Colorado, and was in session at 10:00 a.m. The session was called to order by Past President O. F. Lewis. Consultant, Colowyo Coal Co., Denver, Colorado. Mr. Lewis introduced President A. F. Geiger, Manager, Navajo Mine, Utah International, Inc., Fruitland, New Mexico. Following are Mr. Lewis' remarks: Ladies and gentlemen, members of the institute, guests and friends, welcome to Steamboat Springs and the 70th meeting of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute. From all appearances this is our largest meeting and should be the most successful. When I last spoke to you I was President of Colowyo Coal Company and the Rocky Mountain Coal Institute but that has changed. Colowyo Coal Company was acquired last Dec. by W. R. Grace & Co. and operates as Colowyo Coal Company, Division of W. R. Grace & Co. I am confident these people will make a worthwhile contribution to the coal Industry.

The causes of ferrosilicon loss from Dense Media Separation (DMS) plants, and the related properties of ferrosilicon, are identified. Two characteristics, corrosion resistance and saturation magnetisation, are examined in detail. The chemistry of the corrosion mechanism is described and its relationship to plant parameters discussed. Methods of reducing corrosion losses are proposed. Lack of particle homogeneity, and its influence on corrosion and abrasion is noted. The relationship between low magnetic susceptibility-and increased magnetic separator losses is demonstrated experimentally.

Geochemical assessment of mine waste materials prior to commencement of a proposed mining operation is a fundamental component of mine feasibility studies and the regulatory approvals process. Static and kinetic geochemical test methodologies are widely used to predict the geochemical nature of mine waste materials and to develop strategies for managing potentially æhostileÆ materials. These data can also be integrated with data from other fundamental studies such as hydrogeology to predict specific environmental outcomes and potential impacts at mine closure and post-closure.A case study is presented for a proposed open pit gold mine in Mongolia, which illustrates how geochemical, hydrogeological and groundwater quality data can be used as part of a geochemical modelling process to predict the final pit lake water quality over time. A series of static and kinetic test geochemical test programs were completed and acquired data integrated with hydrogeological and groundwater quality data provided by the proponent. A widely used geochemical modelling program (PHREEQC) was used to develop the geochemical model and predict water chemistry in the pit void after mine closure. Sensitivity analyses were completed to explore the effects on the model output of groundwater to leachate water ratio, pit wall rock type and climate.Modelling has indicated that pit void water should be pH circum-neutral at mine closure and should remain within Mongolian and World Bank water quality guideline limits under the modelled simulation most likely to occur in the field. Final void water salinity is expected to increase eight fold over 14 years after end of mine life due to a continuous flux of salts (particularly sulfate salts) into the pit lake whilst the pit lake volume will remain relatively constant due to evaporation and a slow recharge rate. Dissolved metal and sulfate salt concentrations in pit water are also predicted to increase over time and could be moderately elevated compared to applied water quality guideline values. Some of the metal concentrations, however, may be lower as these would be expected to precipitate at circum-neutral pH and greater. Recommended additional assessment work on the project when mining commences includes determining the magnitude of adsorption and co-precipitation of metals occurring in the pit void water/sludge system.CITATION:Robertson, A, Rait, R and Swane, I, 2013. Understanding the impulse transferred into a structure by the coupled two-phase loading produced by an explosive charge buried in soil is of interest for various applications. The most common impulse measurement technique involves a buried explosive charge and a steel plate/test structure suspended above the charge. Upon detonation of the charge, the soil and overpressure heave the plate into the air. The plate’s trajectory and velocity provide the necessary information to calculate the total impulse transferred from the charge configuration.

In some cases, coal barrier pillars must be relied on to withstand high hydrostatic pressures in order to prevent inundation of active mine workings. Such barriers are particularly important in areas, such as parts of West Virginia, where much of the future mining is down dip of mines which have been abandoned, or are currently being worked. Also, where multiple seam mining is conducted, a barrier pillar in one mine may be critical to safety in a mine in a lower seam. MSHA's Coal Mine Safety and Health district offices and the Mine Waste and Geotechnical Engineering Branch of the Pittsburgh Technical Support Center, have recently been involved in the study of barrier pillars in Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio and Oklahoma. In this paper, the factors involved in determining the required width of pillar are discussed, past practices for sizing barriers are reviewed, and related current Federal regulations are examined. In addition, the results of laboratory testing of bottom rock are presented.

"Those of you who were at last years C.M.P. meeting are aware there was discussion at that meeting concerning the best method of assisting the assayers of metal mines to exchange new ideas and methods of assaying. The opportunity to advise you of what came of that discussion is very much appreciated.There are several societies, including the Chemical Institute of Canada, the Spectroscopy Society and others that could be of some assistance to assayers. However, since these societies cover a rather broad field and not many mine assayers have the opportunity to attend their meetings, it was felt that an organization oriented to the specific needs of the mine assayers would be of more value to them.Several years ago an attempt was made to hold meetings for the benefit of assayers in conjunction with the Conference of Metallurgists held each year by the Metallurgical Society of the C .I.M.M. This did not work because very few of the mine assayers attended the meetings.With the very evident success of the type of meetings the C.M.P. have and the excellent groundwork done by your secretary, Mr. Stevens, in talking about this to mine management and assayers at many mines across the country, it was decided to hold a meeting at Noranda on October 8 to discuss how best we could help ourselves solve our problems.For the initial meeting it was felt that perhaps it would be better to start with a smaller group, so invitations were sent to mines in Ontario and Quebec that were geographically fairly close to Noranda."

True careful work of Gross and Zimmerley1 has established the fact that the energy actually used in grinding is proportional to the new sur-face produced. This confirmation of Rittinger's law was made by crush-ing quartz in a frictionless drop-weight machine and determining the surface of the quartz by its rate of solution in hydrofluoric acid. The details of this procedure have been described adequately elsewhere and need not be repeated here. The resultant data furnish the only available basis for comparing accurately the efficiency of grinding machines. This method is so cumbersome experimentally that it has been little used. As an alternative all sorts of approximations have been proposed. The best of these is complete size analysis by sieving and elutria-tion. Such procedure is very lengthy and difficult to carry out accurately. Furthermore, any sizing method becomes very inaccurate for determining surface with very fine sizes where the ratio of surface to volume becomes very large. To avoid the lengthy and difficult technique of elutriation it has been proposed to estimate the size distribution below 200 mesh from various probability formulas. Such a procedure is at best an engi-neering approximation; at worst it is a mere guess. Some time ago Dr. V. H. Gottschalk2 found that the coercive forces of magnetite powders were directly proportional to the surface area, regard-less of size distribution. It was at once apparent that this furnished a method for determining grinding efficiency quickly and accurately. The only requirement was a single determination of the relation between the work input of the Gross-Zimmerley drop-weight machine and the coercive force of the resultant crushed magnetite.

The Macmillan Pass tungsten property (MacTung) is the largest known copper-tungsten, calcic, exoskarn deposit in the Western Hemisphere. Located on the border between the Yukon and Northwest Territories in northwestern Canada, the deposit crops out on Mt. Allen within the Selwyn Mountain Range. It was discovered in 1962 by a subsidiary of AMAX Inc. and has since been explored by 16,300 meters of surface and underground diamond drilling and by 800 meters of underground development. Geologic reserves are in excess of 30 million tons, grading slightly less than 1.0% WO3. Scheelite (CaWO3 ) is the main mineral of economic interest. Accessible by road, the property is not in production. Previously estimated reserves at MacTung have been unable to fully utilize all the geological controls on mineralization. In the past three years, however, an intensive program has been underway to improve our understanding of the deposit and to use the resulting information in a more precise way. This paper will discuss the key aspects of the geology as they specifically relate to reserve estimation and will demonstrate how these controls are being used in a geostatistical model of the deposit.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine the effectiveness of long holes drilled in solid virgin coal in degasifying an area of the Pittsburgh coalbed showing that horizontal holes drilled into a virgin coalbed from the bottom of any shaft will effectively remove methane gas in commercial quantities from the Pittsburgh coalbed. The in situ pressure at a depth of 214 feet into the coalbed and the average gas and water flows from the five degasification holes were 3 lb/in2 gage and 860,000 ft3/d and 1.7 gal/min, respectively. On June 19, 1975, after 593 days of degasification, a compressor was installed and pipeline quality gas was introduced into a commercial pipeline. As of June 1, 1976, after 1,022 days of degasification, over 753 million cubic feet of gas had been drained and 117 million cubic feet of gas had been purchased by the gas company for use in the local community of Wadestown, W. Va. The gas drained to date is six times the gas estimated to be in the area subtended by the holes. Methane emissions at the working face of 1 West mains, Federal No.2 mine has been reduced by 50 pct, proving the value of methane drainage by horizontal degasification holes drilled from shaft bottoms ahead of mining.
