"The manufacture of asbestos paper began commercially about 40 years age but its principal development has taken place during the past twenty-five years. The asbestos used by the ancients, termed amiantus by Pliny was used for winding sheets, tablecloths and other fabrics. It was probably chrysotile fiber and was a woven and not a felted product, and there¬fore is not to be confused with asbestos paper. There are, however, some early references to paper manufacture that are of interest. Pontoppidian, Bishop of Bergen, in his Natural History of Norway, published in 1750, refers to paper made from asbestos found in the parish of Waldens. He states that this paper did not burn when thrown in the fire, but the writing on it totally disappeared. This indicates that the primary ob¬ject was to obtain an indestructible writing paper. About 100 years later, further efforts were made with the same object in view. In 1853, a patent was issued for a process of making paper from a mixture of asbestos and alum. Many experiments were made to manufacture suitable asbestos printing paper. Some such papers contained only about one-third asbestos, the remainder being of combustible material. Such papers would burn, but would leave a white residue which retained its shape and preserved the written characters. On account of the difficulty of obtaining a smooth and even surface, and the tendency for the material to absorb ink like blotting paper, asbestos paper is not well adapted for writing or printing purposes. Other early uses of asbestos paper were for ornamental wall-paper and carpet linings. None of the uses mentioned above have developed to anything of importance in a practical way, but the manufacture of asbestos paper has become a very important industry, and it has found extensive uses in ways that were never dreamed of by the early investigators.It is recorded that the first sheet of asbestos paper made in America was manufactured in 1876 by John Roberts & Son Company, in a mill near Waltham, Mass. The material first used was a long-fibered amphibole asbestos from Italy. About three years later, Canadian fiber was introduced and proved to be very satisfactory. The shorter grades of fiber which would otherwise be wasted were used for the manufacture of paper and board. For several years, the product of this mill was sold through Rice Kendall of Boston, Mass. From 1881 to 1900, the H. W. Johns Company, of New York, took the entire product which was 30C to 700 tons per year. The latter company built their own asbestos paper mill at Brooklyn in 1900. Keasbey & Mattison Company, of Ambler, Pennsylvania, began to manufacture in 1897. Other early manufacturers were: the Asbestos Paper Company, at Baldwinsville, Mass„ and Mr. B. S. This circular has been prepared for the guidance of safety engineers, shot firers, and coal-mine inspectors concerning multiple blasting with short-delay (millisecond-delay) detonators. These special precautions are suggested in addition to those normally followed in blasting, as outlined in the Federal Mine Safety Codes 5 6/ and in Miners' Circular 58.7/ INTRODUCTION The use of short-delay blasting has been proposed for promoting safety and increasing the rate of production in coal mining. Ideally, short-delay blasting, as compared with equivalent single-shot blasting, reduces exposure of the shot firer to dust, fumes, and weakened roof; as compared with equivalent simultaneous blasting, it reduces roof disturbance.

This paper discusses the metallurgical testing procedures and their applications at the laboratories and mills of Pima Mining Co. The author shows, using discussions and case histories, that routine sampling and evaluation of daily and monthly data can be as valuable as thorough laboratory investigations and mill test work. A great deal of valuable information can be made available this way. This paper discusses laboratory and mill metal-lurgical testing procedures and their applications at Pima Mining Co., located about 25 miles southwest of Tuscon, Ariz. The Company, incorporated in 1951 (the year the orebody was found) in California to operate the Pima mine, is jointly owned by Cyprus Mines Corp., Utah Contruction and Mining Co., and Union Oil Co. Milling started in December 1956. The main Pima orebody is a contact metamorphic vein of copper-bearing hornfels with an average dip of 45° to the south with an east-west strike. The hanging and footwalls are quartzitic pyroclastics (arkosite) containing some sulfides. Barren igneous intrusions are also present. Conglomerates and alluvial wash cover the deposit to a depth averaging about 200 ft. The principal copper mineral is chal-copyrite. Native copper, chalcocite, and minor amounts of chrysocolla and other copper minerals are also present, together with sphalerite and some molybdenite. Generally, it has been noted that the ratio of chalcocite to chalcopyrite is higher in the lower grade ores, while as the grade increases, there are only minor amounts of chalcocite. Open pit mining is employed at Pima, using both trucks and an inclined skiphoist system. A detailed description of Pima Mining Co. operations was presented by Spaulding et all. More recently another orebody to the north and east of the present pit has been discovered and will be placed in operation within a few years. This ore is of a porphyritic rather than a lode nature since values are disseminated in both igneous and metamor- phosed sedimentary rocks. The new orebody is expected to be harder and cleaner than the present deposit. The views expressed in this article are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect those of Pima Mining Co. nor of the profession in general. PlMA MILL The following outline of milling practice is presented to furnish a background for later chapters of this report wherein specific problems will be detailed and analyzed. Run of mine ore is crushed in three stages, using conventional equipment to 85% minus 1/2-in. for feed to two 10 x l6-ft rod mills operating in open circuit. Each rod mill discharge is split between two 10% x 13-ft ball mills in closed circuit with three 20-in. cyclones. In addition, a 7 x 12-ft ball mill with one 20-in. cyclone receives part of the discharge from one of the rod mills. This equipment was manufactured by Allis Chalmers and Equipment Engineers. "The inhalation of silica has been shown to produce a dramatic inflammatory and toxic response within the lungs of humans and laboratory animals. A variety of cellular and biochemical parameters are used to assess the silica-induced lung injury. The purpose of this paper is to introduce the use of luminok:Jependent chemiluminescence as a new method to study inflammation in both phagocytic cells and lung tissue recovered from silicaexposed animals. Chemiluminescence, or the emission of light, accompanies the release of reactive forms of oxygen when phagocytic cells are challenged. In this study, male Fischer 344 rats were intratracheally instilled with either silica (10 mg/100 g bw) or saline vehicle. One day after the instillations. a marked increase in the chemiluminescence was observed in the lung tissue and bronchoalveolar lavage cells recovered from the silica- treated animals when compared with the saline controls. The light reaction was markedly decreased by either superoxide dismutase or N-nitro-Larginine methyl ester hydrochloride. Superoxide dismutase is involved in the enzymatic breakdown of superoxide anion. while N-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester hydrocholoride, a nitric oxide synthase inhibitor, prevents the formation of nitric oxide. When superoxide anion and nitric oxide react. they form the highly oxidizing substance peroxynitrite. This study then implicates peroxynitrite as an agent that may be responsible for some of the oxidant lung injury that is associated with silica exposure. The use of luminol-dependent chemiluminescence may prove valuable as a method to measure the earliest events in the inflammatory process. and may be an adjunct in studying the mechanisms that produce inflammation. - Environ Health Perspect 102(Suppl 10):37-42 (1994) IntroductionResearch on inflammation has not produced a method that links the initial events of the process to the controlling events. Rather, a variety of parameters are measured that are the result of and not the basis of the inflammatory reaction. Parameters such as tissue weight, edema, blood flow, enzyme and protein release, or production of metabolites (prostaglandins, leukotrienes) have been used extensively. A method is needed that could be applied to cells of a particular type, groups of cells of different types, and even tissue, in an attempt to study the kinetics of the inflammation as well as being sensitive enough to monitor the early events of the process . Since inflammation is so complicated, the relationship between the control of the initial events and the oxidation process has never been explained nor studied in any derail."

When management is confronted with the risk of constructing a waste disposal well, these are some of the questions which may arise. Should the company expand the present waste treatment plant? More lagoons will cut into valuable acreage which might be needed later, and yet the pollution engineer says he can guarantee results. On the other hand, does the formation being used for those successful disposal wells off to the west extend over far enough to be used for the company's own well? Will the formation be thick enough? Will it be too deep? Will it be porous and permeable enough? Apart from needing to make a profit on the products made at the plant, plant officials must sometimes act under pressure to comply with pollution standards. The manager must build the cost of the pollution control system into the price of the products made by the company.

The new euphoria in diamond exploration brings with it a need to understand the challenges that new projects can face in different stages of the development and risks that the commercial outcomes from the new projects fall short of expectations. In many cases, the problems are related to a poor understanding of the technical risks and a failure to adequately address them during the course of investigation. Failure to evaluate all disciplines to the same level of certainty could lead to a situation where the important issues are only identified late in the project development, resulting in costly delays and financial difficulties. The diamond projects located in Canadian Arctic, with its challenging environmental, geographical, social, political and geological contexts are especially sensitive to the high variability of the outcome. This presentation highlights some of the technical aspects that could be the leading sources of risk in diamond projects and could ultimately result in inappropriate mine designs, reducing the economic outcome.

Current modern trends in mining show that hoisting shafts are being expected to fulfill an important ventilation function. However, where rigid guides and supporting structures are mandatory, ventilating power costs will be high, unless the transverse structures (shaft sets) are streamlined. In the complex configurations of hoisting shaft furniture patterns, either for original design purposes, or for the adjustment of an existing shaft, a useful degree of aerodynamic optimization, by reduction of overall resistance, can only be effectively evaluated by model studies in a special purpose wind tunnel, as described herein. The author has shown that, in one particular case, an annual power cost saving of more than $50,000 was indicated, mainly by the selection of buntons and dividers of improved aerodynamic profile. Mining companies are now realizing the advantages that can accrue through proper attention to the aerodynamic aspects of mine shaft design. With progressive demands of civilization for an ever greater supply of coal and metals, and with greater depths of working, higher rates of extraction, advanced degrees of mechanization, and improved standards of environmental health and work comfort, shaft design is becoming an extremely important aspect of mining operations. In addition, because the cost of sinking, equipping, maintaining, and operating a mine shaft is continually increasing, there is a greater incentive to use a shaft for the maximum duty, consistent with economy. The current natural tendency is therefore to sink multi-purpose shafts, to install as much equipment as is safely and effectively possible to operate; and then, over and above all these functions, to use the shaft to its maximum possible ventilating capacity, as a major, or auxiliary, airway. Clearly, this latter additional function can only be employed at a significant cost, since the most economic operating airways are smooth-lined and devoid of internal rigid furniture. It is true that hoisting functions can be carried out in such shafts if rope guides are used, but only under restricted conditions. Where a manway must be provided, fixed guides and supporting structures are mandatory, and ventilation costs become accentuated. It is generally recognized that the prime element of cost in ventilating a mine can be represented by the power required to drive the fan unit. It is also known that the largest component of total mine resistance is that of the downcast shaft, where this shaft is equipped with rigid guides for hoisting purposes. The pressure loss varies directly as the resistance of the shaft, in accordance with a modification of the Atkinson equation p = RQ2/3600. Furthermore, the air horsepower drawn is given by the equation AHP = (p x 0/33000. Therefore, the power required to drive the fan unit varies as the resistance of the shaft and the cube of the air quantity. Clearly, if Q is a specified minimum, then the only way to minimize the pressure loss (and the power costs) is to reduce the shaft resistance R. (See Table I for a list of symbols.) The resistance to airflow of a shaft equipped with rigid guides and supporting structural sets consists of two components which, for the sake of analytical simplicity, can be regarded as additive. 1) Frictional resistance, represented by the viscous frictional forces within the boundary layer, as air flows along the surfaces of the walls and the periphery of the vertical elements (guides, pipes, cables, ropes, etc.) of the furniture. The friction loss can be readily calculated by the Atkinson equation, after selection of a suitable value for the friction factor K from the McElroy compilation.' Persons who have witnessed such sights know better than to throw a lighted match, cigarette, cigar, or hot coal from a pipe out of an automobile or to discard a fire or flame of any type in the forest, in the country, or in the city.

Mercury is one of the most undesirable contaminants in gold bearing ores. During cyanidation mercury cyanide compounds accompany gold in all the extraction and recovery processes. Of course mercury in the carbon eluates creates environmental problems in subsequent refining steps. One possible process alternative for the separation of gold from mercury in such concentrated alkaline cyanide solutions is the selective solvent extraction of gold by undiluted Dibutyl Butyl Phosphonate (DBBP). In order to describe the behavior of mercury during extraction by DBBP, the results from a preliminary research program are presented. In this study, temperature and cyanide concentration have been found to be the most significant variables which influence the separation of gold from mercury by solvent extraction using DBBP. It was found, using plant eluate from a carbon strip, that excellent separation of gold from mercury can be obtained at 60' C with 98% gold recovery and complete mercury rejection in a single stage of extraction. The influence of pH is also discussed in terms of the extraction chemistry. These results complement previous research which described the DBBP solvation extraction of an aurocyanide ion pair. In addition, these results extend our understanding of the alkyl phosphorous ester extraction systems by illustrating that neutral ionic species such as Hg(cN)02sq, can be extracted at low cyanide concentrations, a phenomenon which had not been observed previously for other cyanoanions.

The impact of seismic loading on open pit slope stability in Australia is often only considered where the slopes are located adjacent to tailings facilities or other major infrastructure. The debate regarding application of seismic loading in open pit design in Australia is usually founded on limited reporting on significant damage of open pit operations during earthquakes, the common perception that earthquakes do not occur in Australia or that they are unlikely to occur during the mine life of the mine. It is frequently overlooked that pit slopes that have withstood strong earthquakes in highly active seismic regions are often designed under strict seismic guidelines. This paper discusses the factors that impact earthquake performance of open mine slopes. These factors include topography, slope geometry, rock material and mass properties, water management and intrinsic pit design. Further, the paper presents insights into the characteristics of earthquake activity in Australia such as magnitude distribution, earthquake depths, areas prone of earthquake activity and general seismic hazard that are relevant to pit design. Guidelines are provided on the conditions and circumstances under which earthquake design in open pit mining should be considered. In addition, this paper provides recommendation on the applicable methods for assessment of the impacts of earthquake loading on pit slope stability.

Deep excavation with support system is required to construct various part of underground structures like shafts, stations and entry structures etc. These structures have to be constructed using permanent or temporary embedded retaining walls with support system. The selection of a suitable type of retaining wall will depend upon the geological condition present in the particular location, time, cost and available equipment etc. In Bangalore Metro Rail Project, secant pile wall is adopted as the temporary earth retaining system and depth of excavation is about 20 m. It is designed initially based on bottom up construction methodology with 3 level of struts and 3 level of anchors but at later stage due to time and other construction related issues, it is decided to change the configuration to 6 levels of strut. Generally, in deep excavations, all the underground structures should be designed and checked for the critical forces from both permanent stage and construction stages. Since, secant piles are used as temporary retaining wall, only construction stage analysis is carried out to get the governing forces and deformation. In construction stage analysis, soil layers are defined with boundary conditions and the surcharge during construction and surcharge from actual building near the secant pile are considered. This paper discusses the effect of change in the support system from anchors to struts and how these changes in the support system affect the behavior of secant pile and subsequently adjacent buildings present in the influence zone of the excavation. As a result, in changing from anchors to struts, the wall displacement, strut forces and ground movement on the adjacent ground and buildings increases. The increase in deflection, ground movements and strut forces occurs during backfilling sequence of the underground station excavation. During backfilling, struts has to be removed and this imparts higher magnitude in deflection, strut forces and ground movements.

"A set of experimental batch leaching tests studied the effect of pH, time, temperature, and stirring speed on the relative Cu, Co, Ni, and Fe leaching yields of an oxidized copper-cobalt ore sample in an aqueous hydrochloric acid solution. The results were statistically analyzed and modelled using the structural equation modelling method. Models showed that Cu, Co, and Ni leaching yields were strong functions of the leaching time and leaching temperature, whereas the Fe leaching yield depended on the leaching temperature, stirring speed, and pH. Under optimum leaching conditions yields were 99.8% Cu, 82.4% Co, 91.3% Ni, and 30.6% Fe.RÉSUMÉ Une série d’essais expérimentaux de lixiviation en bâchée ont été menés pour étudier l’effet du pH, de la durée d’attaque, de la température et de la vitesse de brassage sur les rendements relatifs de lixiviation du cuivre (Cu), du cobalt (Co), du nickel (Ni) et du fer (Fe) d’un échantillon de minerai de cuivre-cobalt oxydé dans une solution aqueuse d’acide chlorhydrique. Les résultats ont été analysés et modélisés statistiquement à l’aide de la méthode de modélisation par équation structurelle (SEM, de l’anglais structural equation modelling). Les modèles ont montré que les rendements de lixiviation du Cu, du Co et du Ni dépendaient énormément de la durée d’attaque et de la température de la lixiviation ; le rendement de lixiviation du Fe, quant à lui, dépendait de la température de la lixiviation, de la vitesse de brassage et du pH. Dans des conditions optimales de lixiviation, les rendements étaient de 99,8 % pour le Cu, de 82,4 % pour le Co, de 91,3 % pour le Ni et de 30,6 % pour le Fe. INTRODUCTIONThe Katanga province in the Democratic Republic of Congo hosts the northwestern part of the Central African Copperbelt. This region abounds with large, rich deposits of sulfide and oxidized copper-cobalt ores. In general, the main valuable minerals present are malachite (CuCO3Cu(OH)2) and heterogenite (CoO(OH)). Common impurities found in heterogenite are Cu, Ni, Si, Al, Mn, and Fe. The substitution of Co by other cations (e.g., Cu, Ni, and Fe) has an influence on the crystallinity of heterogenite (Deliens, 1974). In general, well-crystallized varieties of heterogenite have lower impurity contents, whereas amorphous heterogenite types usually contain more impurities (Thys et al., 2009). Further, in heterogenite, Co can occur in the 2+ and 3+ oxidation states. The gangue generally consists of quartz (SiO2), talc (Mg3Si4O10(OH)2), kaolinite (SiO2·Al2O3·2H2O), limonite (Fe2O3·3H2O), and goethite (FeO(OH)). Oxidized copper-cobalt ores are often treated by hydrometallurgical methods, whereas sulfide ores are often treated by flotation or pyrometallurgy, depending on their grades. Hydrometallurgical methods typically entail selectively dissolving the metals of interest (Cu, Co, and Ni) in aqueous solutions (leaching), transferring the dissolved metals to an organic solution, and retransferring these to a second aqueous solution (solvent extraction). Copper and nickel are readily dissolved in an acidic aqueous media. In contrast, cobalt is difficult to dissolve, especially if it is present in the third oxidation state; however, this species becomes soluble after it is reduced to Co2+ (Mwema, Mpoyo, & Kafumbila, 2002; Kime & Makgoale, 2016)."

Permeability and air flow rate in the bed during iron ore sintering is crucial to controlling the sinter quality and productivity of a sinter plant due to its influence on the flame front speed. In the present work, the permeability of the bed during sintering was analysed by means of measured pressure drop and temperature at multiple points in the bed during sintering. Three different zones were categorised, ie humidified (green) bed, region of maximum resistance (high temperature zone) based on temperature, and sintered bed. Previous work has shown that the maximum pressure drop during sintering was due to several concurrent physico-chemical processes including dehumidification, calcination of fluxes, dehydroxylation of goethite, combustion of coke and melting of granules (>1200°C). To quantify the effect of the different process, sintering experiments were conducted in a milli-pot (diameter 53 mm, height 400 mm) with pressure and temperature measured at same location in bed. The milli-pot was fitted with four equidistant (80 mm apart) taps. Overall, five sections in the milli-pot were analysed for pressure drop at different times during sintering. It was found that in region of maximum resistance, coke combustion and flux calcination were highest contributors with ~35 per cent of the pressure drop when compared to other processes like de-humidification and goethite dehydroxylation which contributed to ~20 per cent and 25 per cent each respectively. The pressure drop contribution of the coke combustion region increased with increasing coke addition rate.

The rapid expansion of exploration drilling with anticipated production facilities for oil and gas in the Mackenzie Delta region of the Northwest Territories has created a demand for granular construction materials. This paper discusses the technique adopted and experience gained by the authors from several major resource evaluation programs in this remote area. The first part of the paper describes a methodology for deposit identification, logistics of helicopter and ground-based drilling operations and the sampling difficulties which are unique to permafrost: soils. The second part describes the exploitation of a large glaciofluvial deposit at YaYa Lake on Richards Island. Granular construction material is sparse in the delta region relative to projected demand. Exploitable sources of granular materials for aggregates or construction borrow are found in glaciofluvial deposits of Pleistocene age or in outcrops of Paleozoic bedrock. Glaciofluvial landforms can be located by reference to published surficial geology maps coupled with airphoto interpretation. Preliminary assessment of these features in a large region is most economically carried out during the summer months with a drill that is transportable by helicopter. Once prospective borrow pit sites are identified, a detailed ground-based winter drilling program must be undertaken to establish aggregate quality and quantity, and to provide information on natural features which could affect development. The glaciofluvial terrain has been highly modified by the formation of massive ground ice within the gravel deposits. This presents some unique pit development problems which are not encountered in a normal bedrock quarry operation.

"In a previous paper the Bureau of Mines. 3/ presented in condensed tabular form all analyses of Texas crude oils made by the Bureau up to March 193K. This previous report states;The first Al well in Texas was drilled near Oil Springs, Nacogdoches County, in 1863-67. However, the first oil field of major importance in the State was discovered at Corsicana,Navarro County, in 1895. Since that time the petroleum industry try in the State has spread and grown until today petroleum from Texas is an important commodity in world petroleum markets.Since March 1939 samples of Texas crude oils from many new fields, and some older fields not covered in the previous report, nave been analyzed. Those analyses arc reported in the present paper. The annual production by years from 1896 to 1940, inclusive, taken from the figures in the Bureau of Mines Minerals Yearbook, are given in table 1. Production for 1896-1940, inclusive, totals 6,579,715,000 barrels.Various authors reported upon developments and production in the Texas fields in the Transactions of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, Petroleum Division, for 1941. 4/"

The search. for massive sulphide orebodies is steadily being extended to greater depths as well as expanding outward into the large portion of the earth's surface where the sulphide bodies are deeply weathered. Massive sulphide orebodies are generally not large in dimensions. They are not like disseminated type sulphide bodies that form large ground exploration targets that can be detected at greater and greater depths simply by increasing the geometrical spacing between the geophysical transmitter and receiver. In¬creasing the transmitter-receiver spacing with massive sulphide bodies eventually "waters down" the anomaly from the body until it disappears into noise. If high surface conductivity is present, as is common in areas of deep weathering, the problem is compounded by the increasing response of the surface layer, as the receiver-transmitter spacing is expanded. The search to greater depths has important implications other than just detection of the orebody. Drilling costs are increased and the probability of missing the target are increased. Missing an orebody is an expense that is difficult to evaluate in dollars per line mile of survey especially since one does not know the value of what was missed. A ground Pulse EM method has the capabilities of solving the problems of deeper exploration particularly in areas of surface weathering it can attain deep penetration without large coil spacings, it also provides information from a complete range of frequencies. The method has other operational advantages since it is free of geometrical restrictions as to coil alignments and can operate in areas of high power line noise.

To ensure the continued growth and economic viability of the Western coal industry, both in the domestic and inter- national markets, it is essential for the industry to become more creative and active in confronting the most serious obstacle in this objective; and that is, the inherently long distances which Western coal must be transported inland to reach its major markets. Figure 1 shows the 1982 coal consumption by state for those states where Western coal was consumed. (Except as noted in this paper, Western coal producing states are defined as Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, Montana and North Dakota. Any exceptions used will have only an insignificant effect on the content of the paper). This figure illustrates the long distances that are required for Western coal to reach its markets. The total production for 1982 from the Western coal producing states was approximately 220 million tons, of which only 85 million tons was consumed within the boundaries of these states. The remainder was transported to markets outside the area. This map also shows, based strictly on the consumption of the states to which Western coal was shipped during 1982 and not considering other factors which are involved in the marketing of coal, the total market potential of Western coal would amount to a total of 445 million tons. This does not include export coal from the West Coast, which is now estimated to be less than 2 million tons for 1983. In 1980, it had been estimated that by 1985 the West Coast exports would have been at least 10 million tons per year, which will not be attained.
