Modern mineral exploration depends on multidisciplinary 3-dimensional integration of geological and geophysical data. Identification of the geological sources of geophysical anomalies requires knowledge of the physical properties fingerprint of rock types, formations and their alteration products. Understanding how and why rock physical properties vary within the Earth's subsurface ensures that appropriate geophysical exploration methods can be chosen, and allows for more efficient and effective surveys to be designed. Physical properties knowledge is integral to geophysical modeling - measured data or values estimated based on geological understanding are used to produce realistic forward calculations and to constrain inversion models. Mira Geoscience and the Geological Survey of Canada, in collaboration with industry and academia, are building a Rock Properties Database System (rpds.mirageoscience.com). It compiles the most valuable physical properties for mineral exploration (density, porosity, magnetic susceptibility and remanence, electrical resistivity and chargeability) linked with location and lithological metadata. A critical knowledge gap, addressed in this study, concerns the dependence of physical properties on alteration and mineralization processes. We report on the results of a collaborative University of British Columbia - Geoscience British Columbia project, ?Integrated Geological & Geophysical Porphyry Models: Adding Value to Geoscience BC Geophysical Data?. As part of the QUEST and QUEST-West geophysical initiatives, Geoscience BC focused detailed geophysical surveys on a suite of six known porphyry deposits: Mount Milligan, Endako, Huckleberry, Bell, Granisle, and Morrison. Physical properties for a set of 269 samples of characteristic host rocks and their altered equivalents were measured. The causes of physical properties variations were investigated through their correlations with ore and alteration mineralogy determined from thin-section observations and X-ray diffraction analyses. Physical properties of variably altered host-rocks and intrusive rocks vary significantly between different BC porphyry deposits. No specific unifying geophysical model exists that can be uniformly applied during exploration. Knowledge of local background geology and local physical properties variations is necessary as host-rocks and intrusive rock compositions vary depending on magmatic affinities, and alteration styles will vary reflecting host-rock compositions, crustal depth and influence of meteoric water. A district-scale exploration strategy requires location of intrusive bodies, which are commonly magnetic, resistive and low in density. Correlations should not be expected between density and magnetic susceptibility, because alteration may lead to magnetite destruction or to secondary magnetite development. Deposit-scale ground geophysics might image potassic alteration zones that can be magnetic in both alkalic and calcalkalic systems. Low magnetic susceptibilities, resistivities and densities might aid in locating the typically more porous phyllic and argillic zones. All geophysical data must be interpreted with background knowledge of local rock types and in light of the expected deposit model and associated magmatic and hydrothermal processes. The most effective means to building physical properties knowledge prior to geophysical investigation remains collecting rock physical properties measurements. The cost of rock properties data collection is low, relative to the overall costs of running a mineral exploration program, and can provide an important framework for design of geophysical surveys, survey method selection, geophysical modelling, and data interpretation.

Changes became necessary in dredging methods employed in Idaho through passage of the Dredge Mining Protective Act (1954). Among other provisions, the law requires dredge operators to construct settling ponds of sufficient capacity and character to reasonably clarify the water used in the mining process before such water is discharged into the stream. Porter Bros. Corp., a placer mining company with many years operating experience in Oregon and Montana, became interested in strategic mineral placers in Idaho in 1950 when it was learned that prospectors had discovered a radioactive mineral deposit in Bear Valley Creek, 95 miles northeast of Boise. The company acquired mining leases and proceeded with exploration and development work on the property. After extensive research had resulted in the determination of successful separation processes, contracts were negotiated with the federal government and deliveries of columbium-tantalum and uranium concentrates commenced in 1956.

As of 1998 German companies have been engaged in research and development of LIF analyzers for rock identification, i.e. for the fingerprinting of rock by the analysis of laser-induced fluorescence (LIF). Test work in Germany, Sweden and South Africa showed the potential of this new technique, which operates online and in realtime (1). In 2003 the Finnish company IMA Engineering Ltd Oy commenced building and marketing LIF analyzers under the trade name OreSpex. Today, one OreSpex analyzer has been installed in the Kiruna Mine, Sweden to check the phosphorus content of train loads. In 2004 a second OreSpex analyzer was built for dilution control in the Argyle Diamond mine, Australia. In 2005 another LIF analyzer will be used for test work in various mines in the US. The principles of the technology and status of ongoing work are presented.

During the phosphating of car bodies containing aluminium, the employed phosphating chemicals zinc, manganese and nickel are, for thermodynamic reasons, only used to a limited extent for the desired surface coating. The major proportion of these metals is discharged together with the incidental cryolite-containing phosphating sludges and the rinse water. Commissioned by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the Institute of Mineral and Waste Processing, Waste Disposal and Geomechanics at the Clausthal University of Technology has developed a two-stage process for the production-integrated recovery of the dragged out chemicals and for closing the rinse water cycle for Audi AG. During the first stage, the phosphating chemicals are recovered by means of leaching. In the second stage, the rinse water is treated by means of electroflotation followed by an ion exchanger.

The objective of this study was two-fold: 1. To perform a world literature search pertinent to the analysis, selection and design of hoisting systems and their components and to codify the search into a literature compendium. The search resulted in a technical data file of over 1500 hard copy items. The compendium index was also suitable for establishing a comprehensive computer-loaded data base on the subject. 2. To develop a comprehensive system of guidelines to cover salient aspects of analysis, selection and design of electrical, mechanical and structural components of a hoisting system with a view to establish parameters for maximum safety and efficiency of operation, installation and revision of the system. 3. (a) In-shaft equipment design and specification criteria are considered as they influence guideline preparation. (b) A comprehensive review of hoist electric drives and controls as applied to mine hoists is set forth with special reference to duty cycle calculations and their effect on electrical component selection.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating vanadium recovery from various domestic resources. A low-grade carnotite ore sample containing 0.34 pct V20S and 0.04 pct U30S was leached, and the results were compared with those of similar leach tests using a mill-grade sample containing 1.26 pct V205 and 0.19 pct U308. Experiments on the two ore samples included agitation leaching, pugging, salt-roast leaching, and autoclave leaching. None of the leaching methods investigated showed any significant advantage over another except autoclaving, which reduced the leach time but at the expense of greater acid consumption. Typical of the experimental results attained are the data gathered from the agitation leaching tests. Agitation leaching of the mill-grade ore with 100 lb/ton H2S04 resulted in extractions of 94 pct U308 and 33 pct V205. To increase the vanadium extraction from 33 to 91 pct required concentrations of 300 lb/ton H2S04 and 10 lb/ton NaC103. Complementary agitation leach tests on the low-grade ore required 200 lb/ton H2S04 to extract 94 pct U308, and 300 lb/ton H2S04 and 10 lb/ton NaC103 to extract 90 pct V205.

The efficient operation of a blast furnace depends primarily upon efficient contact between the descending streail1 of solid materials and the ascending stream of gas. A program of research dealing with the interior of the present-day furnace is being carried by the U. S. Bureau of Mines along two lines: (I) observations on commercial furnaces and (2) experiments in the laboratory. Through the courtesy of the officials of the Illinois Steel Co. it was possible to make a detailed investigation of the interior of the shaft of NO. 4 furnace at the company's South Works, South Chicago, Ill. The experimental work is reported in a IT. S. Bureau of Mines bulletin' which will include the results of several thousand observations on the interior of the shaft of this furnace. Such of the data as are presented later in this paper constitute only a brief summary. The second part of the work has been conducted in the laboratory. Only one phase of the laboratory investigation has been completed at the present time, namely, the flow of gases through beds of broken solids." The object of this papcr is to correlate the results of the two different lines of research and to present a. more or less complete picture of the condition of the interior of a blast furnace by giving approximate, quantitative data of the actual size-distribution of solid particles in a typical furnncc, and of the efficiency of contact between the gas and solid phases. With such data before him the operator or the experimenter not only has a much better idea of the actunl conditions inside a furnace, hut he also knows in what direction to look for possible improvement. The discussion which follows presents only a few of the items studied and reported; those persons who are particularly interested in all the result's of this investigation must refer to the aforementioned publication.

In 1966 Central Ohio Coal Company and Bucyrus-Erie signed a contract authorizing Bucyrus-Erie Company to design and build a 220 cubic yard dragline. This dragline would be used for stripping overburden from their coal reserves located near Cumberland, Ohio. The size of the machine was arrived at after a thorough application study of their annual coal output requirement, depth of overburden and type of terrain. The design and construction of this machine which has been designated by BECO as model number 4250-W is the title of this paper. Size wise based on machine weight the 4250-W represents an increase factor of three over our largest current dragline. Probably the easiest way of presenting a machine of this size is to build it from the bottom up.

In studies conducted by the Bureau of Mines, two test areas were hydraulically stimulated and exposed by mining: One in the Pittsburgh coalbed at the Vesta No. 5 mine, Washington County, Pa.; and one in the Illinois No. 6 coalbed at the Inland mine, Jefferson County, Ill. Induced fractures were contained totally within the coalbed with no adverse effect on the stability of associated rock strata. Induced fractures were vertical and were propagated normal to the direction of least residual tectonic stress. Gas production was increased fivefold to twentyfold by hydraulic stimulation.

A pilot program was undertaken to evaluate a process developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to recover nickel, cobalt, copper and chromite from domestic nickel laterite resources. An existing five ton per day pilot plant was modified to accommodate treatment of laterite by the Bureau process, which employs reductive roasting, ammoniacal sulfate leaching, solvent extraction, and electrowinning to extract, separate, and recover nickel, cobalt and copper as high purity cathode products. Three distinct types of laterite i.e., limonite, saprolite and a mixture of limonite/saprolite were processed through the plant during three operating campaigns. Nickel cathode was made during all three campaigns, while cobalt cathode and chromite concentrate were recovered only during processing of limonite. Leach extraction of nickel and cobalt averaged 83 and 67 percent, respectively, while the overall recovery was 80 and 63 percent for nickel and cobalt, respectively. Initially, over-reduction of iron in the saprolitic calcine contributed to poor settling of the leached solids. This problem was overcome by careful control of reducing conditions and flocculant addition. An economic feasibility study was made for a 5000 TPD grassroots laterite processing facility scaled-up from pilot plant data. Estimated (+ 30) percent capital cost for a Nine and plant is $367 million with an estimated $103 million per year operating cost. The study indicates that low-grade domestic laterite may he processed with marginal profit- ability.

A survey was made of accident data and operating practices related to overloading and uneven load distribution on haulage trucks in noncoal open pit mines. Safety and economic aspects were analyzed. A bibliography of the literature was prepared. Review was made of available or projected systems for weighing or load indicating that might be applied to haulage trucks. A model specification was prepared for an overload detection system. Several promising systems for overload detection were identified. One was installed and tested briefly in a 170-ton rear dump truck in a copper surface mine.

I have thought it well to lay before the Institute some account of the Vallecillo Mines, now, I believe, the only paying ones in American hands in northeastern Mexico, including the States of Nuevo Leon, Coahuila and Tamaulipas. The authentic history of these mines dates from their ownership by an American Company in the year 1851, when they were bought by the Vallecillo Silver Mining Company of New York. They had been worked before by the Spaniards, but had been abandoned for many years, on account of the heavy expense of drainage and the constant incursions of the Indians. The company commenced work with several well-known New York capitalists among its stockholders, and had a large fund of both money and enthusiasm. The first point of attack was at a shaft on a mine known as the Jesus Maria, which had the most favorable traditions. Extensive buildings were put up, and two sets of pumps were successively tried. After the second pump, with a steam-cylinder 5 feet in diameter and 10 feet stroke and a plunger 20 inches in diameter, had failed to do more than hold the water, with infinite labor, at the 250 feet level, and after a thorough exploitation of the whole mine above that level had failed to yield more than some $30,000 worth of ore, it was resolved to abandon the effort. I desire to submit, for the consideration and information of the members of the Institute, the following data, drawings, and tables, showing what I believe will be interesting information with regard to the diamond drill, and its uses in developing mineral lands. I would first say that the results given have been obtained during the past two years by means of two drilling machines belonging to the Lehigh Valley Coal Company, operating on their coal lands in the Mahanoy, Lehigh, and Wyoming regions. 1st. A tabulated statement, giving location of borings, date, progress, total cost, itemized cost per foot, etc. 2d. Section showing strata bored in Nos. 5 and 10 holes at Mt. Carmel, see Plate VI. 3d. Section showing strata bored in No. 19 hole at Hazleton, see Plate VI. 4th. Photograph and description of drill No. 2. From the first it will be seen that the total number of test-holes bored up to May 1st of this year is 24; 9 of these are in the Mahanoy region, 6 in the Lehigh region, and 10 in the Wyoming region, in all of which cores have been taken for the whole distance. The total distance bored is 9902 feet. The majority of the holes have been put down for the purpose of proving the lower veins of the coal series, and have had to encounter the harder rocks of the coal formation. Much of the distance has been through the lower conglomerates, going in some cases through the coarse egg conglomerate, the foundation of the coal deposit, and to the green sandstone and red shale which underlie it. These lower sandrocks and conglomerates are among the hardest known to geologists, and present a formidable resistance to the exploring drill. This fact must be taken into consideratiotl in comparisons of cost of drilling, and when considered will still further improve the very favorable results I am able to show in my statement of costs. In illustration, I will cite the work of one bit when boring in the upper or softer rocks of the Wyoming region, where 280 feet were obtained without resetting, while in the Lehigh and Mahanoy regions, in the lower and harder rocks, bits set with the same quality of diamonds would only bore from 3 to 20 feet before being worn out. The Grant Town Power Plant is a nominal 80 MW (net) Waste Coal-Fired Electric Generating Plant which is located in northern West Virginia, approximately 15 miles southwest of Morgantown. The Steam Generator consists of two (2) Pyro-Power Circulating Fluidized-Bed Boilers (CFB), each rated at 400 000 lbs/hour @ 1,350 psig. Main Steam. The Turbine Generator is a single GEC Ahlstrom unit rated at 95 MW gross and 80 MW net. The Plant began commercial generation during April, 1993. The facility is owned by American Bituminous Power Partners, L.P. (AmBit), and operated by Mission Operations and Maintenance, Inc.

During the past three years the Surface Preparation Committee of the American Mining Congress Coal Operators' Committees has been collecting data on dewatering and drying washed coal, and on screening coal in representative plants in the Eastern and Central bituminous fields. Because of wide variations in bed moisture, such data can be compared only after deducting the bed moisture. It was found that practically every company used a different routine for moisture sampling and determinations. Some reported the moistures as total moistures, others as surface moistures, air-dried moistures, or oven-dried moistures. For most of the reports it was necessary to estimate, from a consideration of the bed moisture and other data available in a given case, corrections to be made in order to obtain surface-moisture figures as a common basis for comparison. At any plant, and regardless of bed moisture, the percentage of surface moisture remaining in a product when the dewatering, or a given stage of the dewatering, has been completed, is the real measure of what has been accomplished. The descriptions and data given with Fig. 1 show that surface-moisture figures show relationships that would not be shown by total moistures. Therefore bed moisture should be deducted, or, if more practicable, the surface moisture of the products should be measured direct. A preparation engineer finds one per cent, or even a part of one per cent, of surface moisture a very important consideration in the results of his efforts to find the most effective and economical methods of reducing and controlling the surface moisture in his products within the required limits. Therefore it is important for him to have accurate measurements of surface moisture with minimum uncertainty as to whether they sometimes include less than the surface moisture and at others all of the surface moisture plus an unknown part of the bed moisture. Tunnel driving is recognized as one of the most hazardous of occupations; this is a reflection of the high accident severity rates and resultant high compensation and similar costs in this industry. Most tunnels are driven by contractors who bid for the jobs, taking into consideration the prevailing industrial insurance rates at the time the bids are placed. After the bid is secured the contractor then attempts to complete the job at the minimum cost to himself. In a sense the accident-cost item is fixed for at least one year when a policy is secured. Time is generally an important factor not only for the contractor, but also for the insurance carrier and the assured. If the assured represents a private interest, the cost burden usually is ultimately placed on the general public which avails itself of the service contemplated; if the project is a governmental enterprise the cost burden unquestionably falls upon the general public involved and on the general tax payer. For these reasons it is of vital interest to the public that accidents not only be kept at a minimum as a humanitarian objective, but also because the accident-cost burden, too frequently not even realized and considered to the degree that it should be, can assume proportions that materially affect the cost of the enterprise. The basic industrial insurance rate for tunneling in California in 1932 contemplated an earned premium of 12.12 percent of the labor pay roll. The State has been particularly engaged in large construction enterprises, some of which involve high accident cost rates, notably structural-steel bridge building, which contemplates an earned premium of 19.65 percent of the labor pay roll. When this figure is compared with the much lower rates that apply to other industries it is apparent that a heavy toll in human wreckage is taken by such engineering projects, which must be viewed as monuments to human suffering as veil as to human achievement.

This research focuses on the strata control issues in a Bord and Pillar depillaring working under the influence of dead load condition of voluminous and fragmented softcover of overburden dump material. It reports the modeling of a mine working through the FLAC 2D software under the Indian geo-mining conditions. The modeling results of an actual mine working under softcover were compared with that under the intact overburden condition to assess the influence of the soft overburden over the depillaring working. The modeling work involved progressive caving of the strata and the cyclic goaf filling following the modelsimulated occurrence of main fall and periodic caving. Mohr-Coulomb Failure criteria along with a simplified strain-softening (MCSS) model was used to study the failure and caving mechanism. Salamon’s compaction model was used to simulate compaction and resultant stress recovery in the goaf material. Comparison of the model findings was done in terms of load on supports, abutment stress, and convergence, apart from the stress redistribution and failure mechanism. The load transfer mechanism of the soft overburden was also studied for an overall understanding of the strata behavior in such workings.

The flotation technique as employed by Florida phosphate producing companies for the beneficiation of fine phosphate particles has been standardized over the years. Lower recoveries of coarse Phosphate rock by froth flotation technique, however, led to the development of new methods based on skin flotation of phosphate agglomerates. Recent developments of floating coarse rock in large flotation machines have not yet convinced the rock Producers of their higher separation efficiency. It is interesting to note that the selection of a particular machine is still bared on equipment preference by an individual company as well as proven performance of a particular machine for upgrading a specific material. Various techniques which have been developed to beneficiate the coarse phosphate rock have been discussed. Performance of the individual techniques is presented.
