The following article is based on observation of college graduates entering the steel industry in technical work made during the Past 25 Years, the first five of which were spent as a college instructor in two engineering schools, and the last 20 in the employ of a large steel company that has hired hundreds of engineering graduates for steel-mill operations. The college graduates encountered during this period have come from many colleges representing schools in Eastern States, Midwestern Universities, many Southern colleges, and many smaller colleges and normal training schools mostly in western Pennsylvania and Ohio. The college training of these students for engineering work naturally has varied widely and the educational qualifications of the entrants have been in many ways different. It was found at an early date that graduates of standard engineering colleges were much more adaptable than graduates in science from nontechnical schools. The engineering students seemed to be more suited to actual work in steel plants and in general were better able to grasp a knowledge of the operations they observed. However, although the graduates of engineering schools have had somewhat better training in physics, mathematics, and engineering, it has been a general and continual observation that most of the students employed have had inadequate training in the fundamental sciences. Since this discussion relates entirely to metallurgical engineers it should be emphasized that students taking metallurgical engineering courses in college seem to be poorly trained in organic chemistry-physics, physical chemistry, thermodynamics, and any higher form of mathematics than simple calculus. It has been noted frequently that young engineers faced with problems in a mill that involve some mathematics generally flounder badly, and that they have little conception of physical chemistry. Another common deficiency lies in the young graduate's lack of knowledge of where to look for the more detailed literature on any subject. He reverts instinctively to some college textbook whose coverage is usually very elementary. It is recommended that such textbooks contain a bibliography of the source literature. and that students be taught to use the original data. Many of the students had had previous courses in college dealing with metallurgical work such as steel melting, metallograhy, etc.r but it was found that their grasp of these subjects was extremely sketchy. It was soon realized that an ordinary engineering graduate could be taught more about steel melting and manufacturing processes in a few weeks in a plant than he could learn in a college course on such subjects. A similar statement may be made regarding the ability of students to conduct laboratory work. Their lack of technique and skill in handling equipment and setting up experiments was soon apparent. The Sub-committee on Safety of the Industrial Organization Com-mittee of the Institute has been asked to cooperate with the National Safety Council, and has made certain recommendations to the Board of Directors of the Institute regarding ways and means of bringing about this cooperation. The National Safety Council has been in existence seven years. Its inception was at a meeting of the American Iron and Steel Electrical Engineers held in Milwaukee in 1912. The first annual congress was held in New York City in October, 1913, at which time the Council was definitely organized. Its membership now consists of nearly four thousand members, representing industrial plants, railroads, public utility companies, insurance companies, state labor commissions, Chambers of Commerce, manufacturers' organizations, etc. These members are in all states of the Union and in eleven foreign countries, and through them the National Safety Council reaches more than six million workers.

After privatization in 1999, PASAR Corporation initiated a plant modernization program to optimize the performance of the smelter by increasing plant availability. This initiative required operational adjustments to the converting and anode furnace procedures, to support the higher throughput in the flash furnace, while continuing to meet government environmental regulations. The major shift in production direction was to eliminate the 30-35 day maintenance shutdown every two years, and replace it with a 15-day shutdown. This paper discusses the changes implemented in the converter and anode operation that have resulted in an increase of 10% in flash furnace throughput, an 18% increase in blister output, to 170 tonnes per cycle, and a converter campaign tonnage increase of 10%. Since privatization, PASAR has instituted a series of ?management of change? programs that have facilitated an industrial cultural change needed to achieve the company?s vision, mission and strategic goals.

THE problem of extracting alumina from clay and low-grade bauxites has been the subject of considerable interest for some time. The basic reason, of course, lies in the fact that known reserves of high-grade bauxite are not inexhaustible and that the present commercial process cannot successfully cope with low-grade bauxites or clay. Ultimately it may be necessary to use these poorer raw materials for all commercial operations. An unprecedented demand for aluminum during the war emergency and the constantly threatened shortage of imported bauxite caused the United States Government to take an active role in this problem. Through the National Academy of Sciences, the War Production Board and the Defense Plant Corporation, it investigated processes and finally selected four to be used in the construction and operation of four experimental plants. Each plant was to be designed in such a way as to facilitate its incorporation into a larger commercial plant should the need arise. The Chemical Construction Corporation process, or "Chemico" ammonium sulphate process as it is better known, was one of the four selected. The extensive literature and patents on record before the war generally follow one of two process-types depending upon the extracting reagent used. One group uses an acid reagent, the other an alkali. The Chemico process uses an acid reagent. For those interested in other processes described in literature, there is a short bibliography at the end of this paper. The basic steps of all acid extraction processes are: (I) to make the aluminum silicates acid soluble, (2) to separate the released alumina from impurities and insoluble gangue, and (3) to recover the reagent for re-use. THE PROCESS AS PLANNED In April 1941, a group of chemists and engineers of the Chemical Construction Corp. became interested in the problem of extracting alumina from clays and low-grade bauxites and, under the leadership of Mr. Blakeslee Barnes, Vice President and General Manager of the Company, first drafted a process in July of that year-five months prior to Pearl Harbor. The work continued in our research laboratories and with a small pilot plant. By June 1943, the work had progressed to a point where it was possible to apply for a patent on the process which was U.S. patent 2,405,426, granted August 6, 1946. Immediately prior to the development of the Salem plant, the process was envisaged to be as follows: I. The first step was to make the aluminum silicates acid soluble. It was planned: (a) Clay or low-grade bauxite would be roasted at 700 to 800°C (1292° to 1472°F), (b) The roasted ore would then be leached with hot aqueous ammonium bisulphate to form a slurry. In this study, several methodologies to manage low grade and often competent portion of the ore have been proposed and tested in lab, pilot and operational scales. Relevant to this subject, the Cooperative Research Centre for Optimising Resource Extraction (CRC ORE) has developed Grade Engineering® (GE) concept to modify feed streams by rejecting the low grade and possibly hard components in the stream at the early stages of a value chain. Application of GE requires to understand the impact of the process on the value chain as they are value modifiers on in situ opportunities. Traditional modelling approaches and tools do not have the ability to run the analysis in a block model scale with high fidelity in an integrated value chain. Integrated Extraction Simulator (IES) in conjunction with sophisticated analytical tools such as a neural network (NN) was used to develop and reconcile a fully integrated value chain. The value chain model makes it possible to run all available blocks in the Geomet block model, which could be several millions, under possible scenarios for Grade Engineering for economic evaluation analysis and mine planning.

To improve the efficiency and speed of under-ground post-disaster rescue operations. The Approach: Develop a battery-powered mine-rescue vehicle designed to carry rescue crews, rescued miners, and their support equipment. How It Works: The experimental vehicle, shown below, was designed and constructed by the Mine Safety Appliances Company under contract to the Bureau of Mines. ATV Manufacturing Company and Delco Electronics were subcontractors. A rechargeable, silver-zinc battery provides power to a 3-horsepower permissible motor, the speed of which is regulated by a solid-state controller. Three wheels on each side are independently driven by a chain and mechanical trans-mission.

During the last few years Outokumpu Oy has put forth efforts to develop the material handling in the Pori tankhouse. The final objective is full automation including cell loading. The fully automated material handling provides high quality anodes and cathodes as well as equipment and handling systems capable of very accurate cell loading. The new machines and equipment for accurate cell loading and the methods to produce high quality anodes and starting sheets are described in this paper.

The purpose of this research was to develop a computer simulator fur predicting the air quality in existing coal mines as well as a design aid for developing new mines. In addition to the air quantity flow, the other variables of tempera Lure, moisture, methane and respirable dust are necessary to determine the air quality. An additional feature of this simulator is that it allows parametric studies of these variables to explore the effect that these variables have on the air quality of an operating mine system. The research has also pointed out arias where more research is needed, and promote better and more systematic data taking techniques. Wang and Hartman (see Reference 9, on page 1-98 of Section 1) had already published a computer program to determine the ventilation of large mines, and Wang and Saperstein (see Reference 10 on page 1-98 of Section 1) later published a refinement of the work in the previous reference. These references were the starting point of the simulator developed by this present research effort, and Section 1 of this report is a slightly modified version of the original vent elation program. One phase of Bureau of Mines health and safety work is promotion of the use of safe and effective dust-collecting devices in connection with rock drilling in coal mines. To insure that adequate equipment of this type is available to the coal-mining industry, the Bureau of Mines conducts investigations and issues approvals for dust-collecting equipment that meets the requirements of a schedule established for testing dust collectors intended for use in connection with roof drilling for roof bolting and for other rock drilling. 6/ Performance tests are conducted under the provisions of this schedule by engineers of the Branch of Health Research. This circular describes briefly the requirements and procedure for approval and lists drill-dust collectors that have been granted approval as of January 31, 1956. The addresses of manufacturers of approved devices are listed alphabetically at the end of this circular.

One of the chief sources of the world's supply of asbestos lies in a belt of ultrabasic rocks which runs northeastward through an area called the Eastern Townships, south of the St. Lawrence River in the Province of Québec. The productive portion of this belt extends from the town of Asbestos in the south, for a distance of some 9,5 km to beyond the village of East-Broughton. The first discovery of asbestos in this region was made in 1874. Only crude fibre was produced until 1888 when the first mill was erected near the town of Black Lake. Since the inception of the industry, almost 100 years ago, no less than 100 different compa¬nies have been formed and 46 different mines have been operated. There are presently 5 active companies in the area providing direct employment for 4100 workers, down from 6000 during the seventies.

This paper compares an integrated evaluation approach to decision-making with more traditional sensitivity analysis and Monte Carlo simulation. The primary objective is to highlight the differences in NPV that can arise from using these evaluation methods in a top down and bottom-up approach. Results from three resource scenarios, derived from sampling a "virtual" ore body (reality) on grid spacings of 75m, 50m and 25m, are analyzed and compared.

"After six years of successful excavation with a support pattern, some roof failures have happened in a room-and-pillar underground mine excavated in a stratified rock mass. In this paper the authors give explanation to the failure mechanisms and redesign the support in order to solve the recent problems of roof collapse.The mine magnesite bed is approximately 14 m thick, and runs in the E-W direction with an average dip of 18º. Due to mine constraints and the inexpensiveness of the ore, the excavation is performed in the mineral itself, avoiding the need for mining dumps and waste excavation. Rooms and drifts are oriented in the mineral bed to form an angle of 19º to the direction of the strata, reducing the roadway gradients to less than 10%. Rooms are 11 m wide and pillars are 7 m wide. They are designed to leave a 1 meter thick magnesite bed in the roof of the rooms to act as a supporting beam. More often than not there is a layer of very poor quality marly shale up to 1 m thick resting on this magnesite beam. Overlying the poor quality marly shale there is a better quality, self-supporting sandy shale.First, a characterization of the involved rock masses (magnesite, marly shale and sandy shale) is performed, collecting the geotechnical data from previous studies and performing new in situ geotechnical surveys to check the soundness of the previous data. A distinction is made between different quality zones inside the mine by means of the RMR classification, associated to the occurrence of faults.Back-analysis of some of the failed rooms and data from exploration boreholes were used to determine the failure mechanisms (associated to Voussoir type failure or occurrence of sub-horizontal joints crossing the magnesite beam). Based on an understanding of these mechanisms, the method used to design the support and to analyse the stability of the different possible thicknesses of the magnesite beams of the rooms and drifts of the mine were improved.Numerical models of the most relevant conditions found in the mine were performed in order to better understand the behaviour of the roofs and to simulate the supporting solution obtained in the previous analyses.The most relevant conclusions with regard to the main elements causing the instability of the roof include the appearance of sub-horizontal discontinuities crossing the magnesite bed, which causes total instability of the roof and usually leads to collapse; excessive thinness of the magnesite beam in the problematic rooms; and the relaxation of the deepest (around 270 m in depth) zone of the mine because of existing faults."

The history of gold and silver analyses shows an interesting duality. On one hand, classical chemical and instrumental methods have evolved to meet changing needs, but on the other hand, the age-old and somewhat empirical fire assay has remained a popular tool. Inasmuch as gold and silver generally have been present in ores at low concentra¬tions, methods have been challenged by a need for sensitivity and selectivity coupled with reasonable assay time. A progressive increase in the importance of low grade materials as ore sources has led to the need for improved methods. Assays of these materials are required for process control and accounting in operating plants as well as for guiding research and development activities. The analytical response to these needs is evidenced by numerous reviews published through 1977-¬e.g., cf Kolthoff and Elving (1966), Beamish and Van Loon (1966, 1972, and 1977), Young (1971) , Mallett (1970), and Sen Gupta (1973). In this paper we present a brief sketch of the history and status of various gold and silver methods. A more detailed summary of atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) is Given, as this method has gained in popularity more than other assay methods. AAS methods currently in use are summarized and discussed briefly. This paper is not meant to be a detailed review, as are the above mentioned publications. Rather, we borrow from those works and more recent papers to report trends in gold and silver analyses (particularly in AAS). Also, we discuss some selected poten¬tial problems, and problems that have been experienced by this laboratory.

"It is widely accepted that bulk ore sorting could provide a step change in processing of low-grade ores. For this to be achieved a rapid, accurate bulk sensor of grade is required as well as sufficient natural variation of grade in the ore stream. CSIRO trialled a magnetic resonance (MR) sensor capable of measuring chalcopyrite, and by inference total copper grade, on the 1300 t/h Ridgeway portal conveyor. The gauge produced an unprecedented set of data down to a 1 t scale for months at a time. This paper analyses the measured variation and compares it to a simple model derived from the bore core data and mixing within the block cave mine.The model of the small-scale (<1000 t) variation is developed using fractal methods which have successfully been used in the past for copper porphyry deposits showing a power law or near power law distribution of copper grade and vein sizes. These fractal distributions have two features highly favourable for segregating ore, a large proportion of low-grade pods and the large-scale spatial clustering of grade. We show the presence of fractal ordering in bore core data at short range in the Cadia Ridgeway porphyry deposit and measure its persistence in the crushed rock produced by the Ridgeway block cave mine over one month. The model is then extended to demonstrate the effect of varying head grade, mixing and pod (or diversion) weight on bulk sorting efficiency.CITATION:Coghill, P J, Miljak, D, McGann, A, 2016. Arising from prospecting success, the underlying worth of the shares of a publicly listed mining exploration company can increase many-fold. Prompt and accurate reporting during the exploration stage is therefore essential. While there is scope for varying degrees of optimism or caution in statements about the future economic prospectivity of a mineral deposit which has been discovered, the directors of a mining exploration company have both a legal and ethical obligation to keep their shareholders and the general public fully informed as to the state of progress of, and significant factual results arising from its exploration efforts. Suggestions are made as to the desirable form and content of exploration reports up to and including the time when the orebody has been delineated in terms of assured tonnage and grade. The benefits which will flow from this greater disclosure are discussed.

Technology transfer is a vital requirement for increasing national capability of coal mine production in Indonesia. The term can cover the introduction of new equipment, facilities and processes and approaches to training and education. Constraints on technology transfer within the Indonesian coal mining industry are reviewed. The contributions that foreign companies working within the industry can make are discussed. It is concluded that the development of major Indonesian coal mines needs input of advanced foreign technology. The foreign mining companies are investing significant capital in operations and are permitted to import outside expertise due to some lack of national skills. Expatriate employees are expensive and have a direct effect on profitability. The success of any replacement program of foreign employees is dependent on technology transfer. There are statutory Indonesian Government directions to reduce dependency on foreign expertise over time.
