Experiments were carried out using the cyclone to treat coal in the size range -2.0+0 mm. The diameters of the cyclone outlets (vortex finder and spigot) were varied to study their effects on cyclone performance. The cyclone products were deslimed over a screen with an aperture of 0.075 mm. The performance of the separator was studied for washing coarse coal (-2.0+0.075 mm) and fines (-0.075 mm). Performance curves were plotted for the separation of -2.0+0.075 mm coal. The concept of a generalised distribution curve was adopted to predict cyclone performance. A mathematical representation was derived from the generalised distribution curve. The specific gravity of separation for individual size fractions showed a decreasing trend with decreasing particle size down to 0.85 mm, beyond which a reverse trend was noted. It was also found that the fine size fraction (-0.075 mm) does not separate on the basis of size or specific gravity but follows the water distribution

A method to predict stress-induced failures around excavations based on the mapped geological and rock mechanical information is studied. Totally of 7 km of newly excavated tunnels are mapped in the Inmet’s Pyhäsalmi mine in Finland at depth between 1000 - 1440 m from which the results and conclusions from the firstly mapped 1.7 km of tunnels are reported. The main rock type at the site is very hard volcanite having uniaxial compressive strength of 230 MPa in median and GSI-value 72 - 80. The maximum in situ stress around the tunnels is 65 - 85 MPa. The prediction of observed stress failures was preceded by comparing elastic 3-D simulation results of tunnels with three statistical yield criteria. Read’s or Hoek & Brown’s yielding criteria are found the most relevant, though, the effect of anisotropy was found to be significant. The most important parameters having a correlation with stress failures are the tunnel orientation and the foliation of rock. Also, the rock type and its strength, tunnel shape and the geological anomalies have their effects. Further, a delay time on mapping was found to clearly diminishing of the most violent failures. Une méthode de prédiction des contraintes à la rupture autour d'excavation, établie sur la base de cartographie géologique et d'information sur la mécanique des roches, à été étudiée. Au total, 7 km d'un tunnel nouvellement percé à une profondeur de 1000 à 1400 m ont été cartographiés dans la mine de Inmet’s Pyhäsalmi en Finlande. La roche principale du site est une vulcanite dur ayant une résistance à la compression uniaxiale de 230 MPa (valeur moyenne) et une valeur GSI de 72 - 80. La contrainte in situ maximale autour du tunnel se situe entre 65 et 85 MPa. La prédiction des contraintes à la rupture observées a été évaluée en comparant les résultats d'une simulation 3D d'un tunnel avec trois critères de limite d'élasticité statistiques. Le critère de limite d'élasticité de Read ou de Hoek & Brown’s se trouvent être les plus important, même si les effets de l'anisotropie sont significatifs. Les paramètres les plus importants ayant une corrélation avec la rupture sont l'orientation du tunnel et la foliation de la roche. De plus, le type de roche et sa résistance à la compression, la forme du tunnel et les anomalies géologiques ont aussi leur importance. Finalement, un délai dans la cartographie résulte en une diminution nette des ruptures violentes. Das hauptsächlich vorkommende Gestein ist sehr hart und vulkanischen Ursprungs mit einer mittleren einachsialen Druckfestigkeit von 230 MPa (Medianwert) und einem GSI-Wert von 72-80. Die maximale In-situ-Spannung im Tunnel beträgt 65-85 MPa. Die Vorhersage von beobachteten Spannungsversagen werden weitergeführt indem man elastische 3-D-Simulationsergebnisse von Tunneln mit drei statistischen Fliesskriterien vergleicht. Read's oder Hoek's Fliesskriteria werden dabei als die relevantesten Kriterien angesehen, obwohl auch der Effekt der Anisotropie als wesentlich erachtet wird. Desweiteren haben Gesteinsart, Tunnelprofil und geologische Anomalien ihren Einfluss. Ausserdem zeigt sich, dass eine Verzögerung bei der Kartierung die ausgeprägtesten Versagen deutlich verringern.

In the course of the Bureau of Mines investigation relative to the causes, behavior, and control f anthracite-mine fires, attention was directed toward the correlation between the temperature of oxidation and the gaseous oxidation products in the range of temperatures between 100° and 350°C4/ These tests, made on a high-grade anthracite to determine the amount of oxygen consumed and the amounts of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen and methane evolved when air was passed through samples of the anthracite at various elevated temperatures, showed that the gases evolved and their relative proportions vary with temperature, constitute a means for determining the probable temperature of the anthracite, and thus permit detection of incipient heating before a dangerous fire hazard exists. As the relationships mentioned are affected somewhat by the amount of previous oxidation of the coal, it was deemed desirable to know to what extent they might vary owing to this cause. It was also considered desirable to have a means for estimating the extent of oxidation from the gas analysis, as this would permit a more accurate estimate of probable temperature. Finally, it seemed desirable to know how much the composition of coal might vary over an extended period of oxidation, since this was previously suggested5/ as a possible means for estimating the probable maximum oxidation temperature to which a sample of coal had been subjected.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Pittsburgh District, is in the final phases of modernizing the locks and dams on the Monongahela River. One facet of this modernization is to replace the existing Locks 4 located on the Monongahela River approximately 40 river miles upstream from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The existing locks consist of a 56-foot x 720-foot main chamber and a riverside 56-foot x 360-foot auxiliary chamber built in the 1930s. Two new lock chambers, each 84-foot wide by 720-foot long, will be constructed at the location of existing Locks 4 and will be named Charleroi Locks. The purpose of the new project is to facilitate navigation on the lower Monongahela River. Pittsburgh is currently the second largest inland waterway port in the nation, and the new locks will be an important component of the navigational infrastructure. The existing lock walls are of mass concrete construction and are founded on wooden timber piles driven to rock through alluvial sands and gravels. The new lock walls were designed to be supported by approximately 300 reinforced concrete drilled shafts, varying in diameter from 4 to 6 feet. To handle axial loads, the drilled shafts were designed for end bearing, with some skin friction. The tips of the shafts will be founded within competent rock. Since the walls will undergo lateral loads, the drilled shaft design also had to consider this loading condition. Some of the drilled shafts will be installed within coffer boxes, which will incorporate a tremie concrete seal down to top of rock. Complicating the design even further was the fact that some portions of the new walls will be supported by shafts that extend some 9 feet above top of rock through alluvial soils, producing a cantilever effect. The first phase of the new lock construction was initiated in the summer of 2005 with a contract awarded to replace the river wall. This required shutting down the existing riverside lock chamber and diverting all river traffic to the longer existing land chamber. The foundation of the new river wall will use 144 drilled shafts. To optimize the design embedment of drilled shafts in rock for the river wall, an exploratory drilling program was conducted by the contractor in July and August, 2005. Based on the quality of the sedimentary bedrock, the shafts will be embedded in rock from 31 to 38 feet. To achieve adequate end bearing resistance, the tips of each shaft will extend through predominantly claystones into a more competent siltstone unit for a minimum embedment of one foot. The contractor also performed an exploratory pile driving program to aid in the construction of the drilled shaft casing and the cut off walls that will encapsulate the river wall. Two demonstration drilled shafts located outside the footprint of the new river wall, will be constructed prior to the drilling of any production shafts. The demonstration drilled shafts will verify that the contractor is able to meet the design criteria and quality requirements of the contract. The river wall contract is currently underway and is scheduled to be completed in 2010.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a regulated, intrinsically safe, rechargeable power supply for portable electronic equipment for underground use. The regulated output is ideal for microprocessor power requirements and is suited for operation in hazardous environments. Two rechargeable, sealed batteries are contained within the power supply. Provisions are made to use an external source of power if these batteries fail. Provisions are also made to charge these internal batteries when needed. The circuit is composed of three main circuits: the main regulator circuit, the input protection circuit, and the output protection circuit. The main regulator circuit provides remote voltage sensing, current sensing, fault monitoring, and internal thermal protection. The input protection circuit checks for excessive input current and low battery conditions. The output protection circuit contains two overvoltage detection devices. Schematics, a parts list, and a calibration procedure are provided in this report to enable readers to fabricate the power supply.

Cost analysis of chrome ore reduction is one of the important issues facing ferrochrome producers in today?s competitive environment. Much of this depends on quality and various ratios in the actual ore. The latter can have a direct bearing on electricity consumption and optimum efficiency of the furnaces. While the industry has been successful in reducing costs by designing larger and more efficient furnaces, the role of the optimum blend of ore has perhaps been given less emphasis. This paper will discuss the general specification and metallurgical characteristics of various chrome ores for producing high carbon ferrochromium on industrial scale. By analysing the results obtained from smelting, including chromium recovery and energy consumption, the determining parameters in total cost of ferrochromium i.e. chrome ore; reductant and energy consumption can be optimized. Our study is based on actual experiences obtained from Faryab Ferroalloy Plant over a period of approximately three years.

"A continuously pilot synthesis by microwave-heating was used in preparing the cathode material LiNi113Co113Mn11302 for Li-ion battery, which used Ni1/3Co1/3Mn1/3(0H)2 and LizC03 as raw materials. Decomposition of the raw materials and synthesis of LixNi113Co113Mn11302 would be fmished in single roasting process. In addition, using microwave-heating would reduce the reacting time largely. Furthermore, the yield of LixNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/302 synthetized in single roasting process was 50 kg. Meanwhile, the effects of Li:(Ni+Co+Mn) molar radio (Li:(Ni+Co+Mn)=l.06, 1.075, 1.09, 1.15) was studied in this paper. XRD, SEM and EIS were used in characterizing the cathode material. The results showed that the best Li:(Ni+Co+Mn) molar radio was 1.075. It was found that the LiNi113Co113Mn11302 synthetized with Li:(Ni+Co+Mn)=l.075 had homogenous distribution of particles and ideal layered structure. The galvanostatic charge-discharge(O. l C, 2. 75-4.3V, vs. Lt /Li) tests showed that the initial discharge capacity of the LixNi113Co113Mn11302 was 159.5mAh·g-1, and the discharge capacity was 157.6mAh·g·1after10 cycles.IntroductionRecently, as the cobalt was expensive and the restriction of dynamic power, the commercial cathode Li2Co02 which was expensive, toxic, and high pollution had exposed its defects[1·2l. Since T.Ohzuku[3l first reported the layered LiNi113Co113Mn11302, this material had high reversible capacity and caused the attentions of researchers[4l. Its reversible capacity was l 60mAh/g and 200mAh/g in the voltage range of 2.75-4.3V[5-61. But for the present, preparing LiNiwCowMnw02 by traditional had lots of disadvantages, such as the long heating time, the high cost and the volatizing of lithium and so on[7-9l. According to these, traditional prepatation wasn't good for sustainable development and energy conservation."

During the last few years, several authors1-6 have advanced mathematical solutions, both exact and approximate, to the pressure behavior of a well producing from a region bounded by a circular discontinuity. The most recent solutions were reported by Carter, and by Bixel and van Poollen. Varter solved the appropriate equations analytically. Bixel and van Poollen reported a numerical solution and provided correlation charts for the interpretation of flow tests; their method uses an overlay technique and is valid for wide ranges of mobility and storage capacity ratios. The mobility ratio is defined as the ratio between k/p of the two zones, and the capacity ratio is defined as the ratio between $c of the two zones. We have developed independently an analytic solution, programmed for the CDC 1604, that agreed with Carter's.'1 The same differential equation, assumptions, boundary, and initial conditions were used. We ran 30 drawdowns and 30 buildups of a unit capacity ratio and of varied mobility ratios. We also varied the radial distances to the discontinuity, and the radii of drainage. We examined the results and obtained correlations that were simple to apply and useful in flow test interpretation. The results and the correlations reported here in graphical form allow the determination of the mobility of the two zones and the radial distance to the discontinuity. They eliminate the need to fit field data to a curve as is required in the overlay technique.6 Thus, the advantages of the present correlations are that they require less effort and they provide a unique answer. They also provide guidelines for selecting the parts of the flow test plot to be used in the interpretations. Moreover, the results obtained from the programmed analytic solution define the time intervals where the approximate solution reported by Hurstl and discussed by Larkin2 are applicable. Normal buildup and drawdown plots resulted in an early straight line, a long transition zone and a late (second) straight line. However, the second straight line will not occur if the drainage radius is not at least 10 times the radial distance to the discontinuity. The mobility of the imer and outer zones can be calculated from the slopes of the first and second straight lines, respectively, by the normal methods of the flow test analysis. We found that the radial distance to the discontinuity may be determined from the abscissa value for the point of intersection of the extensions of the two straight lines. Results similar to some of these were reported by Adams et aL7 The approximate solution compared favorably with the exact one during the first and second straight-line periods. However, during the transition zone, deviation occurred between the two solutions. Discussion of Figures Figs. 1 through 7 summarize the results of this investigation. On Figs. 3 through 7 there appears the equation of each respective plot. I was confronted with a profound dilemma as an undergraduate engineering student at the University of New South Wales in Australia in 1992. I had been taught that our planetary life-support systems were in a state of alarming decline by an institution that operated as if what the faculty was teaching was irrelevant. Lights were left on in empty overcooled classrooms, recycling bins were nonexistent, lawns were maintained using pesticides and herbicides, diesel trucks spewed fumes as they passed on their way to drop off chlorine-bleached virgin paper. This disconnect was very alarming to me. While it was obvious that universities should play a leading role in teaching and researching sustainability issues, I wondered how it could be possible to make widespread institutional changes to meet the demands of environmental sustainability when it was not even being done in the very university sector where these ideas were being promulgated. If universities would not change, then who can and who will, I wondered? To a growing number of people, the idea of teaching sustainability without demonstrating it is highly problematic. It is also widely believed that the ability of the higher education sector to reform its own practices is an important indicator of humankind?s ability to address the global environmental imperative across all sectors of society. These sentiments have helped fuel what is now referred to as the campus sustainability movement, a movement dedicated to transforming our campuses into living laboratories for the demonstration and practice of environmental sustainability.

U.S. feldspar output sold or used in 2005 was an estimated 760 kt (838,000 st), valued at $44 million free-on-board plant. This was below the 2004 volume and was the second year of decline in a row. Output included flotation concentrates, feldspar content in feldspar-silica mixtures, potash feldspar and aplite. The strong housing market in the United States maintained demand for ceramic tiles, plumbing fixtures and fiberglass insulation requiring feldspar. Shipments of glass containers were about the same as in 2004. Imports of ceramic tiles and plumbing fixtures continued to increase, taking the place of U.S.-produced goods and the feldspar required to make them. For 2005, 80 percent of the ceramic tiles sold and 50 percent of the plumbing fixtures sold in the United States were imported. Since 2000, manufacturing plant closures in the plumbing fixtures industry have reduced the demand for feldspar and feldspar-silica mixtures by 100 kt (110,000 st). Increased demand from the ceramic tile industry has partially offset the lost volume.

Shock wave physics is an important part of air-deck behavior since the bulk explosives in the column impart a shock into the air-deck where the air shock then passes through the air-deck at a rapidly attenuating velocity. Through both high-fidelity modeling and shock physics theory it is shown that the resulting pressure in the air-deck is two orders of magnitude less than the detonation pressure of the explosive. The induced air blast reflects from the bottom of the borehole and this reflected pressure, even though doubled, is still approximately two orders of magnitude less than the detonation pressure. Air-shocks will ring back and forth in the air-deck for a few tens of milliseconds while the adjacent explosive column(s) are detonating. Transmission of the initial shock through the air along with reflections is an intensive energy consuming process. Energy balance results in shock heating of the air and a temperature increase. However, the increased temperature of the air is also orders of magnitude less than that of the explosive detonation products immediately behind the detonation front. Replacing high energy explosives with zero energy air-decks in a blasthole will always have a negative impact on the adjacent rock fragmentation and movement.

Laboratory scale flotation tests were done on mineral hematite and aspecular hematite ore using oleic acid and sodium oleate as collectors. The mineral hematite floated strongly in the neutral pH region, with an increased pH range of flotation at higher oleate additions. Concentrates with sufficient hematite grade to meet the paint pigment specification were produced using oleic acid and sodium oleate as hematite collectors on the specular hematite ore. Hematite recoveries of 70 per cent at 60 per cent Fe grade were obtained using stagewise roughing. The interaction between hematite and oleate was confirmed as chemisorption but the exact mechanism could not be determined, as two independent phenomena can be used to explain the fact that the pH of maximum grade increased with increasing oleate addition.

This paper reviews the results of an extensive study of microstructures and mechanical properties in bainitic linepipe steels. The research was carried out as a collaborative project between Queen's, Stelco and CANMET. Basic studies of phase transformations and mechanical properties in these steels established important relationships between processing schedule and microstructure evolution, and between final microstructure and mechanical properties. The best combination of strength and toughness properties is obtained with a microstructure comprising a matrix of intragranularly-nucleated bainite (`acicular ferrite - AF') and small (~ 0.5 µm) dispersed particles of martensite (`M/A'). We describe this as a dual-phase AF+M/A microstructure. An experimental study on 15-mm thick plate determined the window of steel composition and processing parameters which gives the dual phase AF+M/A microstructure. The minimum strength and toughness properties for Grade 621 (X90) linepipe steel can be achieved by either a lean steel composition (0.04C-1.77Mn-0.04Cr¬0.32Mo-0.31Ni-0.29Cu-0.08Nb) with extreme processing parameters, or by a higher alloy composition (0.04C-2.07Mn-0.50Cr-0.51Mo-0.04Nb) with a more industrially realistic processing schedule. It is proposed how this approach could be extended to obtain higher strength linepipe grades.

The paper reports on a vacation work project conducted at Khuseleka No. 1 Shaft, Anglo Platinum, where there was a need to optimize the transport of personnel to level 15 and below. Approximately 900 men per hour need to travel between the shaft and the start of the current chairlift system. Time studies were used as the major indicator of the extent of the current problem, and it is recommended that a new chairlift system be installed to cover the distance from the vertical shaft station at level 15 to the chairlift decline station on level 15. A capital cost of approximately R10 million is necessary to carry out the proposed recommendation. Khuseleka No. 1 Shaft has the capacity to wind 1070 people per hour, and the current labour complement going to the level 15 shaft station stands at 1570 employees; thus at optimum efficiency the proposed chairlift system could transport the entire shift to the start of the current chairlift system in only 1 hour and 45 minutes. Reducing the distance walked at the start of the shift may also have an impact on productivity.

To maximise recovery by highwall mining, pillars must be designed which are long, slender and of relatively low width-to-height ratios. The strength of pillars with width/height less than 2 depends primarily on the mechanical response of the coal, due to the reduced influence of frictional restraint between roof and floor. A suitable pillar design approach therefore requires a method of estimating coal-seam properties. Experimental studies were carried out to determine ways of reliably predicting the large-scale mechanical properties of coal seams from small-scale test data. The studies led to a method of practical, systematic assessment of coal-seam properties based on measurement of coal rank and seam brightness profiles. The criterion employs the parameters sigma(c), m and s of the generalised Hoek-Brown empirical strength criterion for rock masses. A novel design approach combines the flexibility of modern numerical modelling programs with simple hand calculation for rapid assessment

This manuscript focuses on the design and development of steels for the railroad industry and methods of testing them. Here are summarized the results of research focusing on alloy development and design, with particular focus on advanced rails and wheels. The high-performance steels are characterized for their mechanical and service characteristics. The relationship between properties and cleanliness is discussed and compared to the regular railroad steel. Some of the tests presented are standard tests that are complemented with the nonstandard test recommended by the Association of American Railroads (AAR) and recommended modifications of this. The paper presents the results of metallurgical analysis, mechanical, and residual stress tests. The laboratory methods include microstructure, residual stresses, tensile, hardness, fracture toughness, and microcleanliness tests.

Unlike other types of mining accidents, where an incident generally involves only a few workers, the danger of a mine fire extends to every person working in the underground environment. Mine fires can trap or kill those working underground by blocking avenues of escape and rapidly creating heat, asphyxiating gases and toxic fire products that can quickly spread throughout the mine. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), in partnership with the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), is conducting research to test, evaluate and improve or modify coal mine fire-fighting strategies and methodologies through large-scale tests. Because wood is the second most abundant fuel available during a coal mine fire, it was decided that a series of large-scale wood crib fire tests was needed to measure the products of combustion and to observe the capability of commonly available direct application fire suppression equipment, namely, fire extinguishers, water and gas-enhanced foam. This paper discusses the wood crib fire tests, provides insight into the products of combustion and describes observations made during the application of the fire suppression agents.1
