Seafloor massive sulfides (SMS) in the western Pacific have received much attention as resources for gold, silver, copper, zinc, and lead (Lenoble, 2000). Since the end of the 1980s, SMS have been found in the back-arc basin and on oceanic island-arc areas. The typical representatives found are in the Okinawa Trough and on the Izu-Ogasawara Arc near Japan (Halbach et al., 1989; Iizasa et al., 1999), in the Lau Basin and the North Fiji Basin near Fiji (Fouquet et al., 1991; Bendel et al., 1993), and in the East Manus Basin near Papua New Guinea (PNG) (Kia and Lasark, 1999). The higher gold, silver, and copper contents in one of the areas increased the chance for profitable mining operation, which was considered by a private company (Malnic, 2001). The company gathered investment money and announced to start the commercial mining from 2010 (www.nautilusminerals.com). On the basis of geological information of the Sunrise Deposit of the Myojin Knoll on the Izu-Ogasawara Arc (Iizasa et al., 1999) and geotechnical characteristics of SMS (Yamazaki and Park, 2003), some preliminary economic validation analyses of the SMS mining in small production scale were reported by one of the authors (Yamazaki et al., 2003; Yamazaki and Park, 2005; Yamazaki, 2007). The results showed high profitability of the SMS mining.

"Technological innovation is an extremely complex activity. The author presents his interpretation of innovation and the innovative process. He reviews the strategy used by participants in coal mining innovation in the past and discusses changes required to meet the challenges of the future.Introduction if an industry is to be successful and viable in today's world, the companies active within the industry must remain close to the frontiers of knowledge. The coal mining industry is no exception. Technological problems facing the coal mining industry are basically economic and social. Economic problems are those concerned with the long-term growth and profitability and social problems, with the health and safety of the mine worker and the impact of the mining operation on the environment.Technological innovation can be a key factor in meeting these problems successfully. The general belief is that the information base for technological innovation exists within mining companies and governmental agencies but current industrial and governmental strategies and structures impede the transformation of this knowledge into the mining products and processes required for growth.The purpose of this paper is to determine where Canada is in terms of coal mining on the innovative ladder. The paper as presented: defines innovation and innovative process; gives an historical ""broad brush"" review o f innovation in the industry; and suggests the challenges to be faced in the future."

Chemical problems associated with surface mining, such as acid generating materials, are important and well documented. However, reclamation research has shown that poor soil physical condition is the most limiting factor to successful row crop production on reclaimed mined land. Critical to success are selection of the best available soil materials used in soil construction and a material handling method that minimizes soil compaction. Excellent corn and soybean yields have been achieved on low strength soils both in high weather stress years as well as low stress years. Total crop failures have occurred on high strength soils in years of weather stress. Some deep tillage practices have been successful in improving compacted soils, but it is preferable to avoid compaction when the soil materials are handled. Soil strength measurements with a cone penetrometer have proven to be a useful tool in evaluating rooting media and reclamation practices. Research has shown that surface mining can be a short term land use that may be followed by productive farmland, if reclamation is done correctly.

Report of the Americanization Society, New York Section During the past two months the Americanization Committee has held social meetings of various kinds for foreign-born women, as a preliminary to future effort along the lines of Americanization work. At the same time, a thorough investigation was made as to the work being done in New York by organizations devoted to this interest. The committee will be very glad to help any other committees being formed, in mining centers, with advice and information that has been gathered together as to classes and meetings of all kinds best suited to the needs of a foreign-born population. The work has been so extensively taken up in New York that for the present it would seem to be, for this committee, the most profitable and interesting work to continue the social meetings and to undertake the care of one or more immigrant families, to be friend and adviser in joy and sorrow, work and play, and in this way do some fundamental Americanization work. Power supply for remote mining developments is compared with supply to the general public with the conclusion that the private power plant operator has many opportunities to minimise his costs which are not open to public utilities. The main features of diesel, gas turbine and steam power plant and the limitation upon their application which may be imposed by the fuels available and the local conditions at remote sites are outlined. Reference is made to the value of joint examination by the mining engineer, metallurgist and power engineer to decide how to make best overall use of capital, labour and energy in co-ordinating the design of power and process plant and in setting no more than adequate standards of reliability and efficiency. Fluctuations in world markets make it difficult to plan mining operations to a firm time base. Suggestions are made to minimise the financial risk in forward expenditure upon power plant which in large sizes due to longer construction time may have to be ordered before a final decision is taken upon the mining development it is to serve.

The last crop of graduates from our colleges and universities who sought employment in the mineral industries found that they needed to hustle to find a job. There was no longer a list of waiting employers to choose from. Some of them became discouraged and drifted into other fields; many are still looking for employment. Word has gotten around that there are no jobs available in the mineral industries, and enrollment in the various colleges of mines and mineral industries has started to drop. Even established professional men are finding themselves suddenly out of work because of unstable metal prices and rising costs. All these people-students beginning to search for a career, young engineers not yet established-face the same problem: "What is the future of the mineral industries, and what type of training will best qualify the scientist or engineer for this changing field?" This question was posed to a number of leaders in different phases of the industry. Their comments are summarized as a guide to those considering a career in the finding, extraction, or beneficiation of mineral products.

As political tensions in African and Asian mineral producing regions increase, the orientation of Latin America's economic development assumes importance not only in the U.S. hemispheric policy but also in our mineral-based economy. Latin America as a mineral supply source has been confronted with regional, political and economic problems which may, at best, have limited further investment and, at worst, have suggested possible repudiation of existing investments. Historically, the mining industry has provided a basis for the national economies of Bolivia, Chile and Peru, and recently the governments of these countries have sought to force increased development of the industry through new and somewhat revolutionary mineral legislation. The extent to which the mineral industries are intended to finance economic development is uncertain and the influence of this legislation on economic freedom and incentive for foreign and domestic investment is a matter for some thought. Two facts are outstanding: first, mining, at present, provides approximately 80% of the foreign exchange in Chile and Bolivia and 42% of that in Peru and, second, existing tax revenues are insufficient to finance a developing economy.

In any operating mine, especially in precious metals operations, immediate improvements in profitability m readily achievable through more effective grade control. Just as the oil industry has come to recognize that enhanced oil recovery (EOR) in existing oil fields yields a higher return on investment than exploring for new oil, so too must the mining industry recognize the benefits of enhanced metal recovery (EMR). Current grade control practices are generally dismal. The very word "control" suggests a willingness to make the best of a bad situation -- as in "damage control" or "disease control" -- and a failure to perceive the opportunities for improved profit. While damage and disease can merely be controlled, success and improved profit can be engineered. This paper presents one approach to enhanced metal recovery. It shows how existing methods can be used to address the issue of ore/waste discrimination. The following sections outline the problem, describe the current state of the practice of grade control, propose an alternative approach and. illustrate the application of the proposed alternative to actual blasthole data from an operating gold mine.

The project involved design, construction, and testing of hydraulic models of culverts, decant and open channel spillways which are typical drainage structures used for protecting mine waste embankments. MSHA (The Mine Safety and Health Administration, U. S. Department of Labor) made a motion picture of the tests. Tests results and products in the forms of graphs, tables and films, demonstrate the principles and factors which govern the function and performance of the three types of drainage structures.

This paper describes a number of aspects of the design and construction of a driven tunnel which forms part of the Boggo Road Busway project. The driven tunnel is 430m long with an excavated width of 15m and a full tunnel excavation height of 8m. The first section of driven tunnel was excavated under the heritage listed Boggo Road Jail for a length of 120m. The main jail buildings and perimeter walls were built in 1908 and are of brick construction. Ground cover over the tunnel beneath the jail site varied from 5.5m to 8m and as a consequence the predicted settlement values and their potential to cause damage to the buildings were critical to determining and obtaining approval for the selected tunnel alignment. The geology along the driven tunnel alignment was very variable, providing mixed face tunneling conditions and ranging from surface residual soils to high strength rock at depth. The maximum ground cover above the driven tunnel is 20m.

THE environmental conditions under which coals are deposited are revealed by the stratigraphy of the coal basins and coal beds and by the details of the structure and the physical constitution of the coals themselves. THE LAND SURFACE Generally Low Relief or Base Level In the Paleozoic coal fields, which have longest been worked, are most important, and are best known, we find relations, in general, as follows A post-Mississippian uplift with, in most cases, very moderate deformation, followed by erosion by which the uplifted regions, especially the bolder of the new topography, were largely worn down, while the older and less deformed regions were more or less extensively base leveled. Base leveling of most of the region continued as the deposition of coal measures proceeded. Consequently, in most coal fields the Pennsylvanian, or upper Carboniferous, lies unconformably on the Mississippian or on older formations. There are but few regions in which sedimentation is seen to have been apparently continuous from the Mississippian into the Pennsylvanian ("Coal Measures").

This study was initiated by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to develop guidelines for determining the maximum economic recovery of resources in coal mines. The work was in response to a requirement in the Mineral Leasing Act of 1920 and Federal regulations. The intent was to address the economic rainability of small, irregular reserves in existing longwall mines. In particular, there was a need to determine if room-and-pillar mining using a continuous miner (CM method) was economically sound, or whether unconventional (short or odd-shaped) longwalls could be used to recover small coal reserves economically. Small reserves, called "widgets" are left in longwall mines on one side of the mains, near outcrops and adverse geological conditions, or near any other location where reserve geometry does not lend itself to mining with a rectangular longwall panel. The work included (1) analysis of the geologic, geo-technical, and economic factors that influence the recovery of small coal reserves, (2) analysis of historic changes in supply, demand, and coal prices, (3) development of typical cost models for room-and-pillar and longwall mines, and (4) development of a practical methodology for determining maximum economic recovery. The methodology included an evaluation of the ratio of coal mined during longwall mining to that mined for development (LDR) as well as costs of maintaining coal quality depending on market conditions. Never increase, reduce, or remove ventilation without unquestionable, compelling reasons. This rule applies every day as well as when fighting fire, attempting to find survivors, or recovering the mine. Right now in some mine a miner is adjusting a regulator in one place to get more air into another. The chances are the desired result will be achieved. Has the miner done a good thing? NO! Solving the immediate problem reinforces the belief he or she can do it again. That "again" might be, to give but one of many examples, the explosion in Greenwich No. 1 Mine. Robbing the proverbial Peter can be the prelude to disaster in a mine. Reducing the airflow is a common practice when fighting a mine fire. In fact, some people have been taught to do that at MSHA's academy. People who believe that to be proper must be people who never experienced a fire. To fight most fires you have to scramble to get enough air. An explosion demands totally different "thinking". If people are soon to go into the mine, DON'T adjust the ventilation. If teams are in the mine, each affected area must be explored or sealed before making any ventilation change.

This Bureau of Mines report summarizes experience and past research on methods for sealing abandoned areas of a coal mine and areas from which the pillars have been wholly or partially extracted. The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 requires that such areas be ventilated or sealed with explosion-proof bulkheads, but the present study indicates that bulkheads alone cannot isolate areas in a coal mine in which methane and other dangerous gases have accumulated. Gas-air exchanges between sealed and open areas must be controlled.

El avance tecnológico en los sistemas de iniciación en voladura abarca desde el sistema convencional (Mecha de Seguridad y Fulminantes hasta el sistema de iniciación electrónica, donde a través de un control de vibraciones se controla la energía liberada en un disparo, optimizando la fragmentación y disminuyendo el daño a las paredes del pit. En ese sentido, el sistema de iniciación con detonadores electrónicos, fija con claridad los conceptos de precisión, flexibilidad y seguridad. Por ello, el presente trabajo señala el uso de detonadores electrónicos por la Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde con la finalidad de evaluar sus resultados en seguridad, precisión, fragmentación, vibraciones, y control de daño a las paredes de la mina. Los resultados fueron óptimos -en tanto mejoró la fragmentación, el proceso de carguío y se incrementó el flujo en chancado primario.

Open pit mine management must ensure that sufficient trucks are available and are being used effectively for production, and that operating costs are under continued control and review for improvements. This paper describes methods for estimating truck fleet requirements which have been used effectively at large- and medium-sized open pit mining operations. Applied to commonly available data, multiple regression analyses can indicate when mine plans should be revised toward optimizing the number of trucks required. Prediction of major cost items for budgetary purposes is addressed, along with an example of how readily available production data can be used to reduce costs systematically.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report describes a system to determine the position and heading of a continuous mining machine during the maneuvers required at the face area of a mine. The system consists of commercially available angular position sensors and a computer interface developed and tested at the Bureau. The sensors employed are laser-based scanning devices that report the angular location of retroreflective targets within their 90° field-of-view. The targets are mounted on the continuous mining machine; the laser scanners are mounted on an external reference structure. The computer interface consists of a single-board computer-controller programmed to gather and process the angular position information, and to calculate the machine's position and heading relative to the reference structure. A sensor fusion algorithm will be incorporated into the computer interface programming to increase the accuracy and reliability of the system.

Field investigations and office studies were used to develop criteria and cost parameters related to the geologic aspects of the proposed project. These results were employed in optimization of layouts and comparison of alternative schemes, leading to selection of the recommended program. Study of project features included the development of subsurface shafts, tunnels, and mined storage areas, and the utilization of existing surface quarries. These project features were proposed for construction within the bedrock units underlying Chicago. Principal geologic considerations included bedrock structure, stratigraphic sequence of units, rock competence and uniformity, and requirements for aquifer protection. All geologic factors were interrelated with other project considerations such as surface hydrology, hydraulics, and urban setting. Data for analyses was acquired through an exploration program conducted intermittently between 1967 and 1971, in addition to that already available through numerous explorations and well constructions in the project area. The exploration program included seismic surveying, core drilling, geophysical borehole logging, and water pressure testing of boreholes, and water well drilling and testing. Extensive laboratory tests were conducted on core samples. The data formed the basis of studies enabling the formulation of preliminary design and siting criteria resulting in construction cost evaluation.

In the flotation of Zn-Pb ores, sphalerite is floated following copper sulfide activation. In this type of sulfide ore, pyrite is commonly treated as a gangue, and poor selectivity between sphalerite and pyrite/quartz is often reported. But pyrite may also appear in association with gold, and flotation of such auriferous sulfides is of great importance in many countries (e.g. South Africa, Australia). In the cationic flotation of sulfide ores with dodecyl amine, sphalerite can be floated while depressing quartz and pyrite. While in a well-aerated pulp in the presence of lime (especially after oxidation with H2O2) the cationic flotation of pyrite is depressed, oxidation of pyrite in the presence of Na2S makes it floatable with amines even in very alkaline environment.
