Franklin Guiterman was born March 7, 1856, in Cincinnati, Ohio, where his father, William Guiterman, was at that time engagcd in the wholesale dry-goods business. Both of his parents were natives of Bavaria, but the inspiration of America was upon them, as they gave to their son a peculiarly American name, symbolizing thrift, individualism and scientific knowledge. Franklin Guiterman received his general education in the grammar schools and the Hughes High School of Cincinnati. He finished the latter course in the early 70's of the last century, when the great demand for mining and metallurgical experts in this country naturally led his parents to direct his further studies in that direction. Accordingly, he went to Europe, and studied at the Royal Saxon Mining Academy of Freiberg, where he completed the course in 1877, at the age of 21, and returned to the United States to engage in mining and metallurgical practice. Going to Colorado, he became assayer for the Terrible mine, at Georgetown, and in 1878, for the Little Chief mine at Leadville. The position of assayer, particularly at that period and in that region, was the door to much valuable knowledge of mines and ores. Besides learning the nature and value of the different classes of ore from the mines of his own company (if he was employed by a company) the assayer, had the first chance, through his outside customers, of seeing and testing the specimens brought by prospectors, and thus learning of important new discoveries. Moreover, if he possessed metallurgical knowledge, he might advance to the position of a metallurgical manager. Guiterman stayed in Leadville four years, and during that period was assayer or chemist for several different companies. Then for about a year he superintended copper-mining operations at Hartville, Wyo. In 1884, he had charge of sampling works at Silverton, colo.—an admirable opportunity for gaining wide knowledge of the varied ores of the San Juan country. In 1885, he was Superintendent of the Mingo plant of the Pennsylvania Lead Co., at Sandy, near Salt Lake City, Utah. The foregoing list of employments, each occupying not more than a year, certainly looks like the history of a rolling stone, gathering no moss. But the cause of these frequent changes was not inefficiency in each new position. The Eldorado Epidemiology Project formally began in late 1978. It consists of a retrospective cohort study, to be followed by and to leave in place the mechanism for a prospective cohort monitoring program. These present and future activities are intended to merge into one another. The current study includes all Eldorado employees past and present for whom records are available. The objectives of the undertaking are - 1) to obtain cause-and-effect, dose-response data with which to evaluate the risks to workers in radon and radon daughter containing atmospheres, and to provide additional quantitative information on which to base possible improvements in working conditions; 2) to identify any dead employees of E.N.L. whose cause of death suggests that a potential compensation claim right exists for their survivors, and to similarly identify living ex-employees of E.N.L. whose work histories and states of health suggest potential compensation claim rights. The nature of the study has been determined by the history of Eldorado, which will be described briefly. Eldorado began (as Eldorado Gold Mines) in the late 1920's, operating relatively unsuccessfully in Manitoba. In 1930-31 the emphasis shifted from gold to uranium, and what became the Port Radium mine was first staked. From the very early 1930's until 1942 the company's purpose was almost entirely devoted to the mining of pitchblende - uranium ore - from the Port Radium site, and the extraction of radium from this ore at the Port Hope refinery in Ontario, a process from which the uranium was a largely stockpiled byproduct. In 1942 the company was requested by the Canadian government to accelerate the production of ore, and of uranium. At the same time, all its stockpile of uranium (then being stored in silos as a "waste" product which might later "come in") was acquired for the Manhattan Project. In 1944 the company shares were bought by the Canadian government and the company itself became Eldorado Mining and Refining (1944) Limited; it has operated as a Crown corporation ever since. The name was changed to Eldorado Nuclear Limited in 1968. The Port Radium mine was closed in 1960, and since 1953 the Beaverlodge uranium mine complex has operated on the northern shores of Lake Athabasca. Radium production was discontinued in 1954 when the radium circuit was taken out of the refinery, and since that time the refinery's products have been various types of refined uranium (uranium dioxide, uranium trioxide and uranium hexafluoride) plus metallic uranium. The refinery, of course, processes the company's own yellowcake but as it is one of only five refineries in the western world, most of its work consists of custom refining for a large variety of customers. In addition to the mining and the refining operations, there have been three other divisions involved, and these are, respectively, Aviation, R. & D., and Exploration, in addition to the financial, corporate, administrative and support activities. MATERIAL AND METHODS The human study population (Abbatt, J.D. et al., 1980) consists of all Eldorado employees who have ever worked for E.N.L. and for whom records are available. The total nominal roll to December 31, 1980 is approximately 21,000 and consists of employees of the Mining, Refining, R. & D., Aviation and Exploration Divisions, as well as a relatively small number of other employees (Head Office, etc.). The basic epidemiologic design, as has been mentioned, is for a retrospective cohort study merging into a prospective cohort study, and depending very heavily upon automated record linkage and file matching. The original design called for an initial assembly of the bulk of the nominal roll, prior to the first of two matches with the National Mortality File. The first of these two matches is now complete and the second is to be separated from it in time by 18 months to two years. The second match will be the definitive match prior to the analysis, the interpretation of the data, and the publication of the results. The period between the two matches was designed to permit completion of the nominal roll, including: - addition of previously missing individuals and groups, elimination of duplicates, and amplification of identifying information, - assembly of work histories and exposure information for each individual, - digestion and application of lessons and modifications resulting from the first match with the National Mortality File at Statistics Canada, - preparation of files for the definitive second match. The analysis of data will be carried out by the National Cancer Institute of Canada Epidemiology Unit based at the University of Toronto. Underground raises and slots are a vital part of underground blasting operations. Raises and slots are vertical shafts or openings used for ventilation, ore passes, or creating voids in stopes. In the author’s experience, raise and slot designs can vary significantly from operation to operation or even within a single operation, sometimes for reasons unknown. The results of the various designs can differ depending on drilling accuracy, geology, and the explosives used in the design. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the recommendations found in published literature on raise and slot design in one document, while incorporating some of the author’s own experience with optimizing raise and slot designs in underground operations. Some inspiration is also included from burn round designs; small versions of raises drilled horizontally in development blasting rounds. This document includes discussion points on drillhole diameter and depth, pattern design and relief requirements, explosive types and loading recommendations, and timing. Ultimately, this document can be useful to those looking to design a raise or slot blast for the first time or for those looking to improve on the results from the raise and slot blasts used at their operations.

IT seems to be in the nature of concepts that they have many meanings, and that the meaning best reflecting the primary interests of a person tends to be accepted by him as the normal meaning of the concept. The concept of ore reserves is no exception, for there is no unanimity of meaning among the several groups of us who are interested in ore reserves, nor even among the individuals of a single group. The groups most interested in ore reserves would seem to include at least the mining industry, perhaps State taxing agencies, and the Federal Government in all its diversified activities, and I would include also the citizenry at large or at least that part of it that consciously thinks about problems-of national welfare. To each of these, and to different individuals within them, the term reserves represents something different, and the farther away the individual or group gets from physical contact with the ore, the more abstract does his or its concept become. It is something different to the policy maker from what it is to the fact-finder or to the miner.

The present study investigates the possibility of the direct removal of oxygen from the Ti-30Ni (wt per cent) alloy melt through the thermodynamic equilibrium reactions at 1623 K in the vertical tube furnace. The deoxidation efficiency of Ti-Ni alloy melt by adding different contents of metallic calcium (Ca) as a deoxidant was evaluated with the binary CaF2-MgCl2 flux. The thermodynamic equilibrium experiments showed that the total oxygen content in the alloy decreased from about 650 ppm to 350 ppm when 3.5 wt per cent Ca was added to the Ti-30Ni (wt per cent) alloy. Alternatively, the effect of flux composition in the CaF2-MgCl2 flux on the oxygen content was also investigated at 1623 K. Therefore, the effect of binary flux systems on the deoxidation ability was compared at 1623 K. According to the results, the flux system with 80 per centCaF2– 20 per centMgCl2 exhibited the best deoxidation capability, ie total oxygen content in the alloy reduced from 1450 to 550 ppm.

Global warming hitherto viewed as a distant threat to the environment, is now the subject of fierce goo-political debate. The debate centres around the time frame required to achieve environmental compliance, and the cost implications of meeting that objective. Since coal is the fuel of choice for power generation, the priority objective of energy producers is the pursuit of environmental protection measures that allow coal to be burned without any attendant negative impact on the environment. From an environmental point of view, public attention is today firmly focused on the impact that all industrial activity has on the environment, and coal is singled out from other fossil fuels as being the product of an inefficient smokestack industry. Despite coal's poor public image it is unrealistic to suggest as some do, that use of this fossil fuel as a primary energy source should be drastically curtailed. Coal which already generates about 35% of the world's electricity is continuing to increase its share of this rapidly expanding market, and to argue against its use is flying in the face of reality. However, changes are required in the way coal is used in some of the new clean coal technologies, since many include advanced methods of combustion. Indeed changes in the way coal is used is a vital link to the future of coal as a primary source of energy, and increased coal utilization will be directly linked to changes in its use. Discussion of various issues that affect coal utilization are the focus of this paper.

"A section of a London Underground expanded segmental lined tunnel constructed in the 1970’s progressively deteriorated after 2001, with extensive radial joint spalling and mid-segment cracking. As part of the PPP contract Tube Lines Ltd and their partners carried out various analyses of the tunnel, including analysis of laser scans of the tunnel, geotechnical testing through the tunnel walls, geotechnical desk studies, real-time monitoring and even full-scale segment testing. This paper discusses the behaviour of the tunnel lining in this setting, the causes of failure and the lessons that can be learnt from this rare example of a tunnel which was progressively failing in service. It is finally noted that a replacement tunnel lining was installed during night-time possessions and completed in 2015. INTRODUCTION In 2003, Tube Lines Ltd. was established under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) scheme to provide maintenance services and upgrade projects for London Underground (LU). The Deep Tube Tunnel Knowledge and Inspection Programme comprised the assessment of all tunnels, shafts and other underground structures. This included a number of lengths of tunnel constructed using segmental concrete linings. First used by LU in the 1960s, the savings both in cost and speed of construction led to concrete linings replacing cast iron for new tunnel construction in all but a few cases. During the initial scoping phase of this programme, inspections identified potential issues with the expanded concrete segmental linings on the Jubilee line. The inspections found a number of segments with surface spalling (Figure 1a), which did not appear on the post-construction defect records. These were generally relatively shallow, up to 40mm deep, spread over a wide area of segment. These were different to spalls caused by handling damage, which are typically localised at segment corners. Subsequent inspections over the following years identified an increasing number of segments with these types of spalls as well as an increased incidence of longitudinal mid-segment cracking (Figure 1b). The increasing occurrence of these defects was hypothesised to be caused by tensile stresses developing in the vicinity of the joint."

The Hopper-Feeder-Bolter (HFB) is a prototype multifunctional machine designed to improve productivity by minimizing continuous miner place changes. It is designed primarily to work beside a two-pass continuous miner, bolting on one side and then place changing to bolt the other side while simultaneously providing a surge car and lump breaker located directly behind the continuous miner. Surface testing was conducted at the Bureau of Mines Mine Equipment Test Facility (METF) to evaluate overall system performance and reliability. Tests were conducted to evaluate place changing, tramming, lump breaking, roof bolting, drawbar pull, conveying, temporary roof-support (TRS) capacity, lighting, and noise. Surface test results indicate the HFB is ready to be tested and evaluated underground in a production mode.

There are many aspects of a grinding mill supply and installation that can result in the mill not operating as intended, resulting in unplanned shutdowns, poor reliability and headaches for all concerned. One of the largest aspects, both in criticality and physical mass, is the mill foundation; if not properly specified, designed and constructed the mill operation will be compromised. The mill foundation starts with the design specification and loading diagram supplied by the mill builder. The importance of understanding these documents and how to apply them is critical for the start of any mill project. When designing mills with a GMD the foundation must be properly modeled to ensure that all interactions of the mill and motor structures, foundation and subsurface strata behave in the intended fashion. All of the previous efforts can be laid to waste if the construction of the mill foundation is poorly handled. Mill foundations are typically the most massive concrete structure at a processing plant and can easily cause nightmares for inexperienced contactors. This paper explores some of the more important facets along the lifecycle of the grinding mill foundation.

Rock blasting is a crucial technique employed in mining construction and quarrying industries to fragment large rocks into smaller, more manageable pieces. However, it often generates ground vibrations that can pose significant challenges. This study explores the application of Conformal Prediction (CP) in the context of rock blasting to develop predictive models that estimate blasting-induced vibrations and quantify the associated uncertainties. Various machine learning models were integrated within the CP framework using MAPIE and CREPES libraries. The results demonstrated the effectiveness of CP in providing statistically reliable prediction intervals, making it particularly useful for applications where the stakes of underestimating uncertainty can be high.

Pipe pigging is a technique for the in situ (field) coating application, to create a seamless internal anti-corrosive lining of long pipelines. The technology originated in the cleaning of pipes, and these proven cleaning methods continue to be used today. Firstly mechanical cleaning of the pipeline is performed, using wire brush, razor back, course stud and fine wire pigs, then foam pigs, or criss cross pigs, and urethane blade scrapers to remove loose debris, wax, residual hydrocarbons and corrosion products from the pipeline. Part of the proprietary techniques and expertise is to ensure that these cleaning pigs do not get stuck Next chemical cleaning of the pipeline is performed, using repeated pig runs with detergents, solvents, acid etching, corrosion inhibitors, consecutively batched between two pigs, to ensure a clean, dry metal finish to a visual cleanliness standard of ISO SA2½. These in situ techniques were developed, 40 years ago to apply internal corrosion protection to pipes using a thin layer of epoxy based paint (50 to 100 micron). Until recently these old techniques were never improved upon. Although many thousands of kilometres of pipes were successfully coated with these thin film epoxy based paints and old application techniques, these thin paint films had problems in weld coverage, and were also unable to fill pits caused by pitting corrosion, and unable to replace metal loss caused by channel erosion. New coating material developments, revised application methods and modified pigging equipment have now made it possible to apply thick film coatings as corrosion barriers to the internals of pipes in the field, using these pigging techniques. The thick coating films can be up to 1 mm (40 mils) thick in a single coating run over long distances. The new thick film coating materials and application techniques are similar to continuous screeding, creating a far more robust seamless internal pipe lining when compared to the old technology of thin film paints. With thick film polymers the option now exists to create a structural GRP pipe within a pipe, be it steel or cementicious. It has been preferable, even necessary, to move away from the traditional epoxy paints and coatings. It was found difficult or impossible to use epoxy materials for these pipe coating applications due to the requirement for achieving a suitable viscosity with adequate hold up. In order to reduce epoxy viscosity a solvent or reactive diluent is required. This inevitably lead to solvent entrapment and poor cure characteristics in cold climates. Further mud cracking in over thick areas, the inability to extend or reduce pot life, poor control of cure time and limited resistance to aggressive or chemical environments made solvent based epoxy resins a poor choice.

Gold mineralization at Kidston occurs in a semicontinuous zone near the margin of a large, late Palaeozoic breccia pipe. The pipe is ovoid in plan, funnel-shaped in cross section and straddles a contact between Proterozoic metamorphic and granitoid rocks which are intruded by a swarm of late Palaeozoic acid dykes. Rock fragments within the breccia pipe reflect the enclosing country rocks and mix in various proportions to form gradational lithological domains. Most of the gold is free and is located in the breccia matrix and in a set of inwardly dipping sheeted quartz veins which kink around the pipe margin. Sulphide minerals, dominantly pyrite, occur as disseminations in the breccia matrix and as aggregates in the cores of quartz veins. Hydrothermal altLration is pervasive within the breccia and is most intense in areas with the highest percentage of acid dyke fragments. Sericite and carbonate are the main alteration minerals. An empirically developed genetic theory for the formation of the breccia pipe and attendant mineralization involves magmatic and post-magmatic processes associated with the intrusion of a granitoid body to a shallow level in the crust. Economic evaluation of the deposit relied heavily on the results of diamond drilling. Both polygonal and geostatistical reserves were calculated and found to be in close agreement. Geostatistical reserves are considered to more closely reflect the tonnes and grade achievable during mining. NYC has always been a high-profile target for both foreign and domestic terrorists. Explosives have always been the go-to tool for terrorists to bring about serious physical injury, death, and property damage in our society. Today with the anti-police movement gaining traction in the United States and anarchists groups using homemade explosives against law enforcement and municipalities, it is the responsibility of the explosives industry to ensure that every explosive product on a blasting site is secure. We must prevent the theft of these energetic materials used on projects and sold by vendors so they are not used by these terrorists. We have learned many lessons here in NYC which began with the theft of explosives used for blasting projects in NYC to supply the IRA (Irish Republican Army) 50 years ago. The liability is too significant to take short cuts in securing energetic materials. Over the years through cooperation with all agencies and the industry we in NYC have developed certain proven protocol and procedures we would like to share with the industry. An efficient and effective security plan for the logistic movement of explosives, as well as for the blast site is imperative to keeping the good name of the industry from negative repercussions and possible additional bureaucratic oversight of an industry that is highly regulated and still recovering from the pandemic. Communication, security assessments and transparency with all stakeholders and the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) will greatly improve the overall security for the blasting project. This SOP (standard operating procedure) will allow the AHJ to become a proactive partner in the security of the blasting project. If the AHJ is not a law enforcement agency, the law enforcement agency specialty unit must be notified and included in all phases of the project. The security for a blasting project with AHJ and law enforcement input starts at the inception of the project when the memorandum of understanding (MOU) is obtained, and involves the AHJ through all steps of the approval process. This includes threat assessments on new and existing structures. SME’s (Subject Matter Experts) must be present at all stages. The blasting industry and regulators must work collaboratively to improve safety, security, and create a dialogue with law enforcement and the AHJ. Relationships are built through trust, teamwork, transparency, and communication and greatly improve the safety of our great country.

Many ore reserves are harvested by a combination of open pit and underground mining methods. In these cases, there is often material that could be mined by either method, and a choice has to be made. The area containing this material is referred to as the transition zone. Deciding where to finish the open pit and start the underground mine is referred to as the transition problem and it has received some attention in the literature since the 1980s.In this paper, we provide a review of existing approaches to the transition problem encompassing: graph theory-based optimisation employing an opportunity cost approach, heuristics and integer programming. Coal exploration has traditionally involved the acquisition of data to enable a resource to be quantified and qualified to the extent that its economic potential can be determined. This process commonly relied on: drilling to determine the depth and thickness of coal seams, broad characterisation of the overburden and interburden, and to provide cores for coal quality analyses; basic wireline logging to cross-check the depth and thickness of coal seams and provide some indication of rock mass strength; and basic surface geophysics and remote sensing to identify major geological structures. In recent years, the adoption of the JORC Code as a basis for the reporting of resources and reserves has placed a greater emphasis on the need for detailed, reproducible data sets that not only satisfy the traditional requirements of mine planners, but also satisfy the governance requirements of corporate and financial institutions. Similarly, the development of sophisticated numerical modelling techniques for use in both open cut and underground mine design, has seen a greater demand for precise geotechnical data, in situ stress characterisation and hydrological information as routine input to the design process. These requirements, coupled with the prevailing trend toward high capital, relatively inflexible mining techniques less tolerant of geological surprises, and the need for consideration of environmental issues such as groundwater impacts and surface subsidence, requires that modern exploration programs be multifaceted, and designed to commence capturing data relevant to ædownstream issuesÆ even during the initial phases of exploration planning.

"The High Speed 2D Analysis program allows the user to bring in data from several different sources. Of course, keyboard entry is included as a source. Other data is inputted through the serial port (X-2321 of the PC. Two types of data are transferred via the serial port. The first is the tablet digitizer data. The three types supported presently are the GTCO, tablet digitizers. and the Calcomp 2500 and 9100 series To transfer digitized data turn on the selected digitizer and place the cursor on the tablet. Enter the High Speed pmg.ram and select from the Input Program menu the Digitize Inputs(20) option and follow the instructions. TO exit the session, either a keyboard entry or a cursor button is pressed. The second type of serial port input Is from the collectors of the listed survey systems. Typically a file transfer program will be used to send the data from the collector to the PC. This topic will not be addressed at this time."
