A STUDY of the various ores that have been discussed impresses one with the need of beneficiation, in many cases. This applies to the ores that have lain dormant, due to necessity for further preparation, or to ores that now find a market due to a changed condition. Processes of beneficiation will come into their own as our richer ores become exhausted. Many efforts at improvement have been commercial failures, due to prematurity. Thomas A. Edison, with characteristic foresight, attempted concentration of the low- grade New Jersey magnetites some thirty years ago. Due to high costs and the discovery of the Mesabi range, his efforts were futile. However, a successful crusher, designed by Mr. Edison, resulted from this attempt. Agglomeration of concentrates had not, at that time, been brought to its present efficiency, when sinters and briquettes of excellent physical condition are obtainable. Recent efforts in the beneficiation of the lean magnetites of the East Mesabi resulted in an excellent sinter, but that operation is also ahead of its time.

Throughout the 1980's the tem Mine-Wide Monitoring System has had various meanings for manufacturers of these systems and underground mine operators alike. System suppliers had visions of grandeur in the early 80's as they envisioned each mine, that has more than a single section, installing a computer based monitoring system to provide surveillance, control and documentation of the entire mining operation, including everything from a single heat detector to the weekly payroll. In a few cases this may have become reality but the truth is these systems have quietly become a steady but unspectacular workbase for the modern mining industry of the 1990's. As it exists today the total market for underground monitoring systems may not exceed $10 million annually. Suppliers have lowered their expectations of the dollar value of this particular market. Some were entering a new market because of experience with computer based data acquisition systems. Others had been active in the mining industry for years with more traditional equipment (communication systems, methane monitors, safety equipment, etc.) and decided to become involved with Mine-Wide Monitoring Systems.

"The Brunswick No.12 site concentrator processes 10,500 tonnes per day of a complex lead, zinc, copper and silver ore producing four concentrates by differential flotation. Research over the years has led to increased understanding about the mineralogical and flotation characteristics of the ore. A pilot plant study conducted at Lakefield Research, primarily designed to investigate the technical feasibility of semi-autogenous grinding, provided an opportunity to test recent theories about grind size,, reagent schedule and flowsheet configuration.A fundamental approach was taken with each of the unit processes involved in grinding and flotation. Basic operating and metallurgical criteria were established in each area and a step-by-step implementation program initiated in the plant.Significant improvements in metallurgical and financial performance have been realized through the application of basic grinding and flotation principles using conventional milling equipment and without major capital expenditure. Current operating practice is detailed and metallurgical advancements cited.INTRODUCTIONBrunswick Mining and Smelting operates one of the world's largest lead and zinc mines near Bathurst, New Brunswick. Brunswick is a publicly traded company with majority ownership held by Noranda Minerals (63%). In addition to the No. 12 underground mine, the company operates a lead smelter and phosphate fertilizer plant in Belledune, N.B. and maintains a 25% interest in a joint venture with Noranda Minerals' Heath Steele mine near Newcastle, N.B. Through the four operations, a total of 2000 people are directly employed with fixed assets totalling Cdn$187 million (BM&S, 1991)."

In 1893 the Anglo-Mexican Mining Company, Limited, purchased the Guadalupe and adjoining mines, and, after opening up the Guadalupe, constructed a 20-stamp mill, which was started in August, 1894. Although the results were extremely profitable (the ore being very rich and carrying much free gold) they were not satisfactory, because the tailings were found to average about $20 per ton in gold. Early in 1895 the late Mr. James E. Mills made for the company a very thorough study of the subject, and decided that the tailings could be treated most advantageously by the cyanide process. In view of this opinion, Mr. Henry R. Batcheller, of Boston, was sent down in the winter of 1895-96 to experiment on a working scale. Mr. Batcheller was successful; and, during 1896-97, built a cyanide-plant with a capacity for treating 1500 tons per month. This was run until May, 1899, when all the sands suitable for the process had been treated. The mill was stopped about the same time for lack of ore; but no tailings from the mill had gone to the dump since October, 1897, as the values they contained after that date were far too low to warrant further treatment. When the cyanide-plant was stopped there still remained on the dump about 16,000 tons of slimes, consisting of about 75 per cent. of clay-slimes and 25 of sand-slimes. The successful treatment of this very unfavorable material is the theme of this paper. Fig. 1 is a view of the hacienda, taken in 1897.

The results of coal sink and float tests are plotted as washability curves. Analysis of these curves indicates the most effective method by which the coal can be cleaned. Sink and float experiments are samplingdependent, destructive, and use toxic chemicals. The present research introduces an alternative method based on a 3D imaging system called RhoVol, in which the density of individual particles is determined from mass and volume measurements. A quantitative error analysis was conducted on coal sample density measurements obtained by RhoVol, and the main factors influencing the errors identified and investigated. The results show that the drawback of this technique is related to its not being able to detect hidden concavities in the particle, resulting in an overestimation of particle volume. Furthermore, it is difficult to capture the impact of porosity and cracks on the volume of coal particles obtained from 3D silhouette images. This mismatch between the RhoVol data and sink and float test results has led to attempts to apply neural network (NN) and linear regression techniques to produce a fully reliable model for correction and estimation of coal density. The NN approach offers superior predictive capability over linear regression, and the estimated density distribution is in line with the sink and float analysis. The root mean square error in estimation of density using the NN model was less than 0.05 g/cm³.

In research conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, platinum-group metal (PGM) flotation concentrate from the Stillwater Complex, MT, was subjected to biooxidation using Thiobacillus ferrooxidans in an effort to break down the sulfide minerals and liberate the associated PGM's for subsequent chemical leaching. Bacterial preleaching oxidized up to 94 pct of the sulfide present, destroyed the PGM-bearing pentlandite [(Ni,Fe)9S8] mineralization, and dissolved most of the nickel in the concentrate. Cyanidation at 80° C proved to be the most attractive chemical leachant, removing 34 pct of the platinum, 76 pct of the palladium, 94 pct of the rhodium, and 97 pct of the gold from the biooxidized concentrate. Research also indicated that increased sulfide oxidation during the preleach phase led to improved PGM recovery in the subsequent chemical leaching phase.

The stability of rock slopes is significantly influenced by their curvature in plan view. The importance of this in open pit mining is indicated by the fact that, in a deep pit, steepening of the slopes by 1° may save as much as $100 million. It is considered that there are two significant factors that play a part in the influence of plan curvature. These two factors are the effect of stress, and the effect of geological structure. The scant literature that pertains to this aspect of rock slope design was reviewed. The geometrical influence of the plan curvature was then investigated. It was seen that it has a parabolic effect on the maximum possible wedge that can fail into a circular pit, where the tighter the concave curvature the smaller the wedge. The plan curvature also affects the volume of a particular wedge, where concave slopes result in an exponential decrease in the volumes and convex slopes have exponentially increased wedge volumes. A change in the strike of the wedge did not affect the curvature’s influence on the volume, but the volumes of shallower dipping wedges were affected more by the influence of the plan curvature. "The Mount Milligan mine, located in central British Columbia, began operation in September 2013 with a design nameplate capacity of 62,500 dry metric tonnes per day, using a conventional SABC grinding circuit followed by bulk sulphide flotation. Over the last few years, many changes have been implemented in order to debottleneck and optimize the comminution circuit to meet and exceed the nameplate design capacity as well as improve the metal recovery of the flotation circuit. This paper discusses changes, grouped into mechanical modifications, projects, and operational changes. The implementation of these changes as well as ongoing challenges and potential solutions will also be discussed.INTRODUCTION The Mount Milligan mine began production in the fall of 2013. It is a conventional truck-shovel open pit gold and copper mine and concentrator with a 62,500 tpd design capacity copper-gold flotation processing plant. The average head grades for the life of mine are 0.18% Cu and 0.39 g/t Au. At full capacity, the mine produces an average 400 dry tonnes per day of copper-gold concentrate containing approximately 21.5% Cu and 50-60 g/t Au. Current mine life is 21 years. This paper will discuss a selection of the operational, engineering, and administrative changes that have been made at the site since the publication of An Update on Reaching Nameplate Throughput and Continuous Improvement at Mount Milligan (Yue, 2017). PLANT FLOWSHEET CONFIGURATION Run-of-mine ore is crushed through a 60-110 gyratory crusher to a top size of seven inches. Up to 100% of the gyratory crusher product is diverted to the secondary crushing circuit by a moveable gate. The material diverted to the secondary crushing circuit is fed to a vibrating double-deck screen. The screen oversize is placed on a surge pile and reclaimed by four vibrating feeders to feed two 1250 kW standard head cone crushers in open circuit. The screen undersize is combined with the crusher discharge and returns to the conveyor feeding the coarse ore stockpile along with primary crusher product that by-passes the diverter gate."

Anglo Coal Australia (ACA) takes a proactive position with regards to attracting and retaining employees at a graduate level. Currently, ACA has graduates in its program across all disciplines: Mining Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Commercial, Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Engineering, Human Resources, Safety Engineering and Processing Engineering. The current program is three years in duration and involves two (generally) equal periods at different ACA mine sites or Brisbane Corporate Office. Most processing plants use automatic samplers to extract ore aliquots along a producing shift. These aliquots are combined into a sample normally sent to lab analysis. The sampler used in the extraction of an aliquot from a continuous flow of ore, i.e. a belt conveyor is required to be both precise and accurate. Surprisingly, not all commercial automatic samplers exhibit these two mandatory properties. Consequently, it is recommended the development of a procedure able to check sample assays reproducibility obtained using a given sampling protocol. This paper uses the Gy’s sampling theory to evaluate coal quality control practices at a washing plant using an automatic sampler extracting coal increments from the ROM feeding belt conveyor. Gy’s theory provides the means to establish the precision limits for a given sampling protocol. Various ore properties are required to be determined in combination with sample mass and mass of the lot sampled. All this information leads to the definition of the precision limit. The precision limit obtained was checked via an experiment mimicking what happens in situations where both miner and consumer use the same and appropriate sampling practices. The experiment demonstrates that sampling theory precision limits were valid if unbiased samplers are used by both parties, i.e. miner and consumer. Keywords: sampling, quality control, coal

"In the present study the recovery of a Panasonic Prismatic Module 6.5 Ah NiMH 7.2 V plastic casing hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) battery was investigated, separately processing the anode and cathode electrodes. The composition of the electrode materials was determined by total dissolution and analysis using ICP-OES. Nickel is the dominant metal in the active materials (65% by mass in the anode and 70% by mass in the cathode). Most of the rare earth elements (La, Ce, Nd, Pr and Y) are located in the anode active material, whereas only a small amount of Y is found in the cathode material. The electrode materials were further characterized by SEM-EDS and powder XRD. The electrodes were leached in sulfuric acid and in hydrochloric acid under different conditions. The dissolution was followed by taking out samples and analyzing the concentration of REE, Co, and Ni using ICP-OES. The results indicate that the dissolution of nickel could be limited by slow dissolution kinetics of nickel oxide. Further, it was found that light rare earths are lost through precipitation during sulfuric acid leaching with increasing extent as the temperature and sulfuric acid concentration increases. The separation of REE from the sulfuric acid leach liquor by precipitation as NaREE(SO4)2.H2O and from the hydrochloric acid leach solution as REE2(C2O4)3.xH2O have been studied by performing experiments using battery leach liquors. INTRODUCTIONIt is well known that the Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) is becoming more common due to economic and environmental reasons. Batteries are widely used in HEVs’ such as automobiles or larger trucks for transportation purposes. The most common type of battery in these vehicles is nickel metal hydride (NiMH), largely due to Toyota's decision to use them in their popular Prius. More than two million hybrid cars worldwide are running with NiMH batteries, such as the Prius, Lexus (Toyota), Civic, Insight (Honda), and Fusion (Ford). Panasonic manufactures HEV prismatic NiMH batteries that have been used by Toyota and GM (among others), while Sanyo manufactures HEV cylindrical cell NiMH batteries, which have been used by Honda and Ford."

"Electric vehicles are an alternative to the existing combustion engine driven cars. According to the EU Battery Directive a substantial recycling rate of at least 50 wt.-% has to be met for aged batteries since 2006. Existing recycling techniques are based on energy intensive pyro- and hydrometallurgical process, which are not able to recover all components. Aluminum and lithium for instance are slagged. The EU-Project “ABattReLife” investigated possibilities for a mechanical processing in order to create a sustainable process and a closed material loop from grave to cradle. After a sufficient liberation of the Li-ion batteries, components like the doped carbon black fraction (mainly lamination of electrode foils), the separator foil and the housing material can comparatively easily be separated from the other components by screening and air sifting. The remaining mixture consists of anode and cathode foils which have a similar free-settling ratio and are more difficult to separate from each other. A second comminution and compaction step modifies the particle size and shape as well as the degree of delamination. These changes influence the density of the electrode foils in order to improve the separation efficiency. Yield and purity of the generated metal concentrates were parameters to show if the separation was successful. The specific energy consumption for the different methods of processing was estimated in order to benchmark the cost-benefit ratio for each one.The studies have been accomplished with a zig zag sifter (model TUBAF), a hammer mill (model HM 340 Jehmlich) and with a Petkus-Sifter. Finally a process flow sheet was developed for a Li-ion battery recycling plant in pilot scale."

Literature was searched and cases of alleged water well damage were investigated. Occurrence of ground water in Appalachia is primarily in low yield, fractured, water table aquifers. Four test sites were chosen based on geographic and geologic diversity. Test wells were drilled at each site and base line data on water quality, static water level, and drawdown characteristics were obtained before surface mining commenced. Blast induced ground vibrations were measured at the surface by the wells at levels up to 5.44 inches per second maximum resultant particle velocity. Measurements made at the bottom wells indicated that vibrations were considerably attenuated at depths of 140 to 160 feet. No direct evidence of change in water quality or well performance was produced by blast vibrations, but removal of downslope support by excavation does cause lateral stress relief which permits the water-bearing fractures to become more open. This additional storage capacity causes the static water level to drop and for well-bore permeability to improve. Static water level recovers if sufficient recharge is available and well performance is improved.

Magnetic separation equipment has long been used to upgrade and beneficiate a wide variety of minerals and materials. Over the years, significant advances in both wet and dry magnetic separators have improved their operability and separation performances, broadening their use.But no one answer exists to the question: what is the right type of magnetic separator? For many minerals, including ilmenite, both process routes may be viable. There are technical, production, as well as economic reasons for choosing wet versus dry. However, recent developments illustrate that a new generation of wet magnetic separators is approaching performance once seen only in dry magnetic separation. With quality and production performance becoming similar, the choice between wet and dry magnetic separation is not as cut and dry as it once was.
