The Waft River gold deposit is hosted by low grade metasediments which have been intruded by a dacite/andesite porphyry complex. Wafi River is classified as a high sulphur, epithermal type gold deposit having: a high sulphur content, a close association with calc-alkalic igneous rocks, zoned advanced argillic and argillic alteration, and enargite group minerals. Gold occurs as minute inclusions in pyrite and pyrrhotite within intermediate dickite/kaohnite - interlayered illitic clay alteration zones. Central leached silicic, alunite and pyrophyllite zones and peripheral chloritic zones are low in gold. The gold mineralisation at Wafi is interpreted to have been predominantly caused by mixing of hot upwelling acidic magmatic mineralised fluids with cool, neutral meteoric/hydrothermal fluids within permeable sediments. Locallised high grade breccia zones are encountered within the porphyry. An initial resource in excess of I million ounces Au has been defined.

IN the commercial annealing of cartridge brass there are four points regarding which definite data are essential. They have to do with the correct interpretation of grain count in its relation to annealing temperature and, incidentally, to Brinell hardness. These points are: 1. The comparison of the grain sizes of two cartridge-brass mixtures: 69 copper, 31 zinc, 0.376-in. (9.5-min.) gage; and 68 copper, 32 zinc, 0.130-in. (3.3-mm.) gage. 2. The comparison of the grain sizes of annealed metal that had previously been reduced by rolling varying amounts; for instance, 20.0, 36.6, 50.9, and 59.1 per cent. 3. The determination of standards for grain sizes on annealed brass of the composition 68 per cent. copper, 32 per cent. zinc and 69 copper, 31 zinc. 4. The comparison of grain size with Brinell hardness on identical samples of annealed metal. In their comprehensive and thorough investigation of the recrystallization of cold-worked alpha brass on annealing,1 Mathewson and Phillips have discussed the relations between temperature of anneal, degree of deformation, and structural alteration in alpha brass. They have also shown certain comparisons between the ordinary physical properties and the grain size of annealed brass. The purpose of the present investigation is mainly concerned with the grain size of cartridge brass, its relation to Brinell hardness, and the publication of sufficient data to enable those engaged in the inspection of such material to have a correct foundation upon which to work.

In the synthesis of diamond, the precursor graphite must present a degree of crystallinity to assure optimum yield and quality for the transformed crystals. X-ray diffraction, SEM and TEM analyses were carried out to investigate the structural and morphologic transformations produced in natural graphite by high pressure-high temperature treatment. The present study had as its objective to characterize the morphological and structural changes suffered by a natural graphite that was subjected to high pressure and high temperature treatments in the region of diamond thermodynamic stability. The results indicate that the material that constitutes the gasket, for the deformable capsule, could act as catalyst in the graphite recrystallization process.

There is no single mining problem at Benson that does not exist at some other mine. There are four, however, that require special attention primarily because they occur together and have an influence on each other. These are the nature of the mineral occurrence, the shape of the ore body, the operating schedule, and the climate. It is the purpose of this paper to describe mining practices in relation to these four factors. Iron ore was first noticed in the Star Lake area early in the nineteenth century. Prior to Jones and Laughlin leasing the facilities built by the Defence Plant Corporation, several companies tried to mine the ore body but gave it up as uneconomical. While there is a little high grade (40%) magnetite, most of the ore contains 20 to 25% iron and not enough was known prior to World War II to design a profitable operation. By 1943, and certainly in the years that followed, technological developments in ore dressing and mining not only put the magnetite into the category of a commercial ore, but made possible the concentration of the non-magnetic iron mineral, martite. This last development nearly doubled the ore reserve. Jones and Laughlin bought the DPC holdings in 1946 and has since expanded the plant to its present capacity of 4,400 gross tons of concentrates daily or 1,600,000 gross tons per year. Magnetite makes up 62% of this production at the present time, but it will be necessary before long to bring martite production up to about 45% of the total because of the ratio of the two ores in the reserves. To keep the plant supplied, 14,000 to 15,000 tons must be mined and crushed daily, with a ratio of concentration that varies from 2.8 to 3.4. The ore body is 12,000 feet long and varies in width from 600 to 1,500 feet. The waste rock is, for the most part, a granite gneiss, and the overburden, of which little is left, is a glacial drift sand. For the entire reserve, there is a half ton of rock for every ton of concentrate, but the stripping ratio is more than one to one at present because of the existence of more rock in the upper mining levels in relation to the ore. The dirt stripping or development work that cannot be handled by company facilities is contracted to an outside firm. The need for this diminishes every year and will soon disappear. The deposit looks like a "J" in plan, with the long leg running approximately north and south and the short leg to the west. The primary crushing plant, consisting of a 54" gyratory followed by two 18" gyratories and a 1,500 foot conveyor belt to the fine crushers, is located on the third level where the long and short leg of the mine meet. The widest part of the pit lies just the north of the crusher. The mine is operated on a lease that expires in 199l0 There are two fee owners, the Benson Iron Company, which owns slightly overhlf of the reserves, and the Newton Falls Paper Company, which owns the balance. There is no appreciable difference in the mining on the two fees, so the ore is removed in strict proportion to calculated reserves during each year. Basic mining equipment consists of eight 45 yard electric shovels, a fleet of twenty-five 22 ton end dump trucks, eleven churn drills for nine inch blast holes, and two small percussion drills for four to five inch holes, There are the normal auxiliary items, such as dozers, graders, wagon drills, and two drop-ball cranes. Power is purchased and, where practical, is used at 4100 volts. Pit drainage pumps can handle a maximum of 11,500 GPM from the several sumps, but water is a problem only during the spring or when a sudden thaw follows a heavy snowfall.

Field testing was conducted at the Strassa Iron Ore Processing Plant to evaluate high-gradient magnetic recovery of iron from the plant's tailings. The installation is the first commercial application of the Sala Continuous High-Gradient Magnetic Separator (HGMS) Model 480 Carousel. The objectives of the five-month testing program included optimization of the operating parameters using SSDEVOP techniques to maximize iron recovery, along with establishing a long-term operating history for the SALA 480 HGMS Carousel. The effectiveness of the optimization procedure, the net benefit in term of iron recovery, and equipment performance are discussed in the paper.

Underground copper mining at Magma Copper Company's San Manuel Mine has been un going since 1955. The block caving mine has been producing copper ore at the rate of over 16 million tons per year. Depressed market conditions during the 1980's forced Magma to look at new technology. Late in 1984, Magma began testing new equipment and mining methods at the underground mine at San Manuel, Arizona. The tests resulted in a move towards mechanized production using new procedures and equipment. The goal was to increase efficiency and cut costs through mechanization.

"The composition and the possible utilization of a slag sample from a nickel smelter operation in the Sudbury district were investigated. The sample containing 0.136% Ni, 0.10% Co and 0.29% Cu could be characterized as a fayalit e slag with a sulphide bearing glass matrix. While the fayalite contains most of the Co, Ni is enriched within both sulphides and fayalite. Cu is only present in higher amounts in sulphides or metallic droplets. This, as well as the small grain sizes of the mineral phases, inhibits significant enrichment by mechanical methods. However preconcentration is possible by means of magnetic separation. An effective hydro metallurgical approach proved to be oxygen pressure leaching with sulphuric acid. Accordingly, the method proposed for processing the investigated slags is to combine the normal utilization as coarse construction material with pressure leaching of the fines and the ground upgraded magnetic fraction. Besides the recovery of base metals, the leaching process yields fine-grained residues, which, after addition of CaD, will set to a cement-like material, or can be used as a pozzolanic cement colour. INTRODUCTIONDuring the pyro metallurgical processing of nickel ores, the valuable metals nickel, cobalt and copper are enriched within the sulphide matte, similar to the smelting of copper ores. The resulting waste materials are slags, which may still contain valuable metal contents of up to 0.5% or above . These contents are close to the cut-off grades of some nickel-cop per-cobalt deposits. The methods that are used to recover copper from slags comprise in general further pyro metallurgical treatment, often after enrichment by flotation. Another area of application for such slags is their use as construction material. However, this might cause environmental problems if nickel containing dusts are produced.Based on one example, the characerization and a possible way of complete utilization of nickel smelter slag s as construction materials in combination with partial base metal recovery are described in this paper. The investigated slag sample was obtained from a dump site in the Sudbury district, Ontario. Detailed test series for process optimization were not possible during this study due to the limited available sample size."

ABSTRACT This paper examines several of the systems and processes that have been developed over the past few years and are now being utilized by major mining companies on draglines in North America, Australia and South Africa. These technologies include production monitors and reporting systems, GPS navigation systems, structural integrity monitoring systems, structural analysis studies to increase the dragline rated suspended loads (RSLs) and inspection and response strategies. The use of these technologies provides significant increases in dragline production and reduces maintenance costs, downtime and the chance of a catastrophic failure.

ALTHOUGH the kinetics of the atmospheric oxidation of tin have been studied,1-3 the kinetics in pure oxygen have not been reported. This note presents some results of the kinetics of the oxidation of tin foil in pure oxygen. The tin foil used in this investigation was 99.78 pct pure, the two major impurities being Pb (0.17 pct) and Sb (0.024 pct). The foil was degreased and air-dried prior to oxidation. The air-formed film was estimated by coulometric reduction4 of the surface oxides to be about 25A. The samples, which were in strip form and had a total geometric surface area of about 300 sq cm, were first evacuated at room temperature in an oxidation bulb to 1 X 10 -5 mm Hg and subsequently degassed for 1 hr at the temperature of the experiment. Spectroscopically pure oxygen was then introduced into the bulb. The rates of oxidation were measured by following the rate of pressure change due to oxygen consumption in a closed system, the volume of which was sufficiently large so that the pressure change during an experiment was 10 to 15 per cent of the total pressure. An oil-mercury manometer,5 with a sensitivity of 3 X x mm Hg (which corresponds approximately to 5 X 10 -7 gm of oxygen) was used to measure the pressure change. The oxidation bulb was heated by an oil-bath and controlled to within -10.3 C. The reproducibility of the rates was good, as determined by the coincidence of rates at 190oC for duplicate experiments. Fig. 1 shows the oxidation curves in the temperature range 168 to 211.5oC at 8 mm Hg pressure. The effect of pressure on the rate of oxidation at 190°C is also shown. The rate of oxidation was not markedly affected by changes in pressure in the range 4 to 9 mm Hg, except perhaps at the lowest pressure, 4 mm Hg, where after about 70 min there appeared to be a decline in the rate, as compared with the rate at the higher pressures. At the lower tem- perature, 168oC, and for short reaction times, it is difficult to distinguish between a linear relationship and a slight curvature in the oxidation rate. However, for longer times, there was a somewhat larger indication of curvature. The samples after oxidation were gold-colored in appearance. The oxide that was formed at 170°C was identified as a-SnO by reflection electron diffraction. This is in agreement with results obtained by other workers.6, 7 The rate data best fitted the logarithmic-oxidation rate law, w = K1n ln(1 + -t/to) [1] where w is the weight of oxygen consumed, t is the time, and K In, and to are constants. The Bureau of Mines experimental blast furnace was operated successfully with anthracite metallurgical briquets . Tuyère pressures were higher and more erratic than for operations using coke , and furnace " hangs " occurred more frequently . Higher hot - blast temperatures were required to maintain the quality of the metal . By using higher hot blast temperatures , the fuel and production rates and slag volumes were comparable to those obtained for all - coke operation . The anthracite metallurgical briquets exhibited excellent mechanical strength and descended through the shaft of the furnace with little breakage or reduction in size .

Aluminum Production. -By October 1, Aluminum Company of America will restart a 35,000-ton-per-year unit at its aluminum smelter at Rockdale, Tex., restoring that facility to its full capacity of 325,000 tons annually. Primary Ingot Price Increase. -Most U.S. aluminum producers in mid-September were quoting a price of 72 cents per pound for primary aluminum ingot. On September 19, Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corp. announced that it would increase the price of primary aluminum ingot 4 cents to 76 cents per pound.

"When Canadian potash was brought into production in the 1960s substantial research was carried out to develop the technology needed to cope with the unique conditions in Saskatchewan mines. The intense research has established Saskatchewan's position as a leader in production technology on a world scale, and as a leader in setting international standards for potash production. The industry is now more than two decades old and, although the mines operate efficiently, there are a number oj prominent areas of concern. High among these is the prediction, prevention and control of sodium rich brine inflows. Control has proven difficult or elusive in the potash mining horizon, but work continues in this area. Control of brine in the superincumbent limestone formation has proven to be easier and more conclusive.The first part of this paper describes the rehabiltation, diamond drilling, and grouting completed at Central Canada Potash, which reduced the brine inflow from approximately 82 l/min . at the beginning of the work to O.9/1min. when the backfilling was placed.The second part of the paper describes the rationale for choosing the rock mechanical instrumentation, the reasons for their placement and the rock mechanical data recorded with some interpretation.IntroductionCentral Canada Potash is located approximately76 km southeast of Saskatoon, near the Yellowhead Highway. The commercial production of potash at CCP started at the end of 1969 at a depth of 1021m below surface. The potash zone, which is presently mined, is approximately 3.35 m thick . Stress relief methods using yielding pillars are used in the design of the mining layouts. The planned extraction ratio averages 35070 . The mine is designed to produce approximately 3.3 million tonnes of sylvinite per year to give approximately 1.3 million tonnes of finished product (muriate of potassium) per year."

The various methods based on solution models for obtaining free energies of mixing from miscibility-gap data have been applied to a number of binary-alloy systems. For nine of these systems there exist experimental thermodynamic data that permit a comparison of the results to experiment. It was found that the method of van der Toorn and Tiedema almost invariably leads to results that are physically unacceptable and that vary drastically with small changes in the miscibility-gap parameters. The subregular solution model is found in all cases, except the Al-Zn, Fe-Cr, and Cu-Pb systems, to exaggerate the free energy of mixing by 30 pct or more. The model developed by Lumsden is found to give results that are often in excellent agreement with experiment and which exaggerate the free energy of mixing by no more than 30 pct. These results and others give evidence that the Lumsden treatment of the effect of unequal atomic sizes and of imperfect configurational randomness due to deviations of AB bond energies from the mean of AA and BB bond energies is adequate for most systems. ANALYTIC expressions are frequently proposed for the dependence on composition of the activities of the components of a solution. Because the development of solution theory is incomplete, these expressions contain parameters which must be determined by experiment. The measurement of activities is often difficult and consequently such measurements are less readily available than are measurements of phase equilibria which, under certain conditions, can also be used to evaluate these parameters. For example, suppose it is known that two structurally dissimilar phases, each of known composition, in an n-com-ponent system are at equilibrium at a given temperature and pressure. n equations can be set up in terms of these parameters expressing the equality of the chemical potential of each component in the two phases. In addition, one can write the Gibbs-Duhem equation for each phase that also contains these parameters. Thus, if these n + 2 equations contain n + 2 parameters, these parameters can be determined (at the temperature in question) from the phase diagram alone. If the average number of parameters in each expression for the activity of a given component in a given phase is V then there will be 2nV parameters involved. Equating 2nV to n + 2 shows that, for n + 2, V = 1. If the temperature dependence of each parameter were to be expressed in some explicit form one could use equilibrium conditions at a number of temperatures to increase V. The situation is much improved when the two phases in equilibrium are structurally similar. It can then be assumed that, stably or metastably, two phases will become one at higher temperatures. Thus the number of parameters involved becomes nV instead of 2nV. Hence, V = 2 for n = 2 using only one temperature. (It is implied here that the activity expressions used are valid over the entire composition range.) In this investigation only the equilibrium of two structurally similar, two-component phases (miscibility-gap systems) will be considered. The various proposed solution models will be applied to a number of these systems and the results compared with available experimental results. All of the analytic expressions that have been proposed for the free energy of mixing of a two-component system are of the form where ?Gmix is the free energy of mixing per mole of solution, N1 and N2 are the mole fractions of components 1 and 2, respectively, and f(Ni, T) is some function of composition and temperature. In the "ideal" solution model f = 0. In the "regular" solution model f = a constant. Since these two models permit only a symmetric equilibrium diagram they will not be considered further here. The simplest model that permits a nonsymmetric miscibility envelope is the so-called "subregular" solution model proposed by Hardy.1 This model gives where the Ci(T) are functions of temperature only. The same expression for f is obtained from the "linear a function" model proposed by Darken and Gurry2 and applied to miscibility-gap systems by Wriedt.3 This model requires that the a function defined by be a linear function of composition (yi is the activity coefficient of component i). This model is not purely hypothetical for it has been found2 to hold true for a number of systems. It is readily shown3 that the f(Nl, T) obtained from this model is of the form given in Eq. [2]. It will be noted that the subregular solution model contains only two parameters and hence both of them can be determined at any desired temperature below the critical temperature, Tc, for a miscibility-gap systems in the manner described previously. A novel triple action load cell assembly (LCA) was developed to determine three index parameters reflecting compressive, tensile and shear characteristics of mudcakes. The results indicate that the tensile, compressive and torsional behaviour of mudcakes are strongly influenced by the physics and chemistry of the mud additives. "Developments in pyrometallurgical technology have led to larger furnaces operating under more intense process conditions. In order to maintain the reliability of these furnaces, which are frequently single-line units, the design of the refractories, cooling systems and bindings has become more critical. Traditional thermal and chemical requirements for the refractory to resist slag attack must still be carefully determined. The larger, modem furnaces have placed a new emphasis on the structural properties of the refractories as well as their thermal properties to suit the extensive cooling systems. Based on operating experience, supported by computer models, the refractories and bindings are designed to work together to accommodate the thermal expansions and contractions in order to minimize permanent furnace growth and the risks of leaks. IntroductionElectric furnaces are used extensively in smelting copper and nickel ores and concentrates. Laterite nickel ores and high-magnesia copper, nickel and platinum sulphide concentrates are smelted virtually exclusively in electric furnaces to accommodate the high melting point of the slags produced. Although a number of smelting processes using oxygen-enriched and/or preheated air have been developed to replace reverberatory furnace smelting of conventional copper and copper-nickel concentrates, (lnco, Noranda, Outokumpu, Mitsubishi) electric matte furnaces remain a strong process alternative for these concentrates, either as the primary smelting vessel or for cleaning the slags produced from these processes.The development of large, high-powered furnaces has been an important factor in the growth of electric smelting technology, as evidenced by the list of operating matte and ferronickel furnaces shown in Table I. Because the compressive forces required to maintain a tight, leak-free furnace increase with furnace dimensions, the selection and design of the furnace refractories, cooling systems and bindings require increased attention."

Coal mass strength properties must be estimated to obtain realistic estimates of coal pillar strength. The limitations of existing techniques for approximating these properties are discussed. The coal mass is anisotropic. The Hoek and Brown approach to rock mass property estimation is modified to allow for this. This approach requires the Rock Mass Rating (RMR) for the strata. In the normal case where bedding is sub-horizontal, these major planes of weakness have little effect on the strength of pillars. As a result of this the RMR must be measured parallel to bedding. This means that a significantly higher rating than that usually obtained for coal is observed. The use of mass strength property estimates in extant empirical relationships is outlined. At high width to height ratios, an acceleration in the rate of increase in pillar strength with increasing width to height ratio has been observed. The empirical relationship developed by Salamon (the so called squat pillar formula) takes account of this. This relationship was found to have significant limitations with respect to its universal application. Modifications arc made to Bieniawski's empirical formula to extend its use to large width to height ratio (squat) pillars. This new squat pillar formula has none of the disadvantages associated with Salamon's relationship. Strain softening was incorporated into non-linear finite difference numerical modelling to estimate pillar strengths. The technique outlined above is used to obtain peak coal mass properties. Modelled pillar strength was found to be sensitive to both peak and post peak mass strength properties. Post peak properties were found to be difficult to obtain and required some back analysis. Modelling results were used to estimate both the strength of squat pillars and parameters for use in a now squat pillar empirical strength relationship.

The new caving megaprojects that are planned to go into production in the next decade have scheduled horizontal developments at very high rates, which are difficult to achieve. Research has been conducted that seeks to model the construction times for underground developments to determine the feasibility of achieving the planned rates. However, these previous attempts do not consider all the operational aspects that make up the mine development cycle. Here, we present a discrete event simulation (DES) model that individualizes each unit operation of the development cycle to determine the construction rates that new projects will be able to attain. The developed model was applied to the New Mine Level (NML) of the El Teniente Division (DET). The results indicate that it would be impractical to achieve the advance rates scheduled in the original plans if the unit operations of the mine continue to be executed using the status quo. The metres developed after six years in the sections analysed can be significantly improved by changing the maintenance strategy for the equipment (457 metres increase), orepass availability (194 metres increase), and the initial planning sequence (1 598 metres increase). It is recommended that the mine implements a flexible maintenance strategy, defines a strategy to ensure and increase orepass availability to contractors, and makes use of current simulation tools for a more robust development sequence planning.

INTRODUCTION The mining, extraction and refining of metals into useful materials is an honorable profession with an ancient and productive history. Civilizations have long depended upon metals for their implements, structures and machinery necessary for survival, growth, and development. Today, as in the future, metals and minerals are essential to the progress of mankind as we approach the 21st century with technologies and concepts that will require new concepts and production from the metal mining and processing industries. Today is the tomorrow we talked about yesterday and the implementation of new ideas is essential if we are to achieve "Frontier Technology in Mineral Processing". Unfortunately, the state-of-the-art mining, processing, smelting and refining methods historically employed were less than desirable environmentally, which has caused todays public to view the metal mining and processing industry with concern. Presently the ancient rock and chat tips connected with old Roman lead-zinc mines which were worked in Wales are causing stream contamination problems that must be corrected at considerable expense to the local governmental agencies (Firth, J.N.M., et al., 1981). However, improved progress has been made and the environmental control and clean-up procedures utilized by modern lead-zinc operations in the "Viburnum Trend" or "New Lead Belt" of South East Missouri may serve as a model to illustrate how alternative technologies, environmental concerns and cooperative efforts contribute to efficient mineral production within the confines of a U.S. National Forest region without significant environmental impacts. This area received international attention when it was opened within the boundaries of the Clark National Forest in the mid 1960's. By 1970 it ranked first in the world by producing 432,576 short tons of lead ore and has since continued in this position producing 451,153 short tons of lead ore in 1983 representing 91% of the total United States lead production (U.S. Bureau of idines, 1983). This production comes from a mining area approximately 40 miles long by 10 miles wide extending in a north-south direction. Geologically the lead is disseminated throughout the Cambrain age Bonneterre Formation, mostly a dolomite, at depths ranging from 700 to 1200 ft. (213.4 to 365.8 m). Galena (lead) is the principal ore mined with lesser quantities of sphalerite (zinc), chaleopyrite (copper) and silver being recovered as economic co-products. This new mining development in one of Missouri is most scenic areas could have led to a classic confrontation between industries and environmentalists. Instead, through the cooperation of industries, governmental agencies and university researchers, the Ozark environment has been protected, and may serve as a model for future coexistence of the mineral industry with the environment. Cooperative Program Development As early as 1965 five new mines and two lead smelters were being prepared for production and environmental concern was an essential part of that planning. All the mining companies became acquainted with representatives of the various federal and state agencies and scientists from the University of Missouri-Rolla (UMR). During the next six years, St. Joe Minerals Corporation, American Metal Climax, Inc., Cominco American Incorporated, Ozark Lead Company (Kennecott) and American Smelting and Refining Company participated in cooperative research efforts. The companies also participated in information exchange meetings, the development of improved analytical methods and the utilization of research findings in the modification or construction of pollution-abatement facilities. Early on research was carried out to determine background values and to establish natural baselines of trace metals in the surrounding environment. The unusual topography and drainage pattern of the mining area were helpful since it was possible to establish control sites and test sites below individual mine-mill operations to study waste-water effects on the receiving streams.
