A common practice in the mining industry is to decompose the planning process into different tasks, so the overall process and specific schedules can be constructed easily. Nevertheless, currently there are some adverse effects, such as not capturing the real value of a project by not taking into account the construction of several underground drifts and general infrastructure. Then the common practice is to compute mining sequence and cut-off grade profiles over the life of the mine without constitutively integrating the development schedule as a means to measure the constructability of a given mine design and sequence. Thus, the investigation summarised in this paper shows a novel, integrative way of treating an underground mine sequence and production schedule while considering drift development scheduling. Moreover, it is thought that, because of this original model, the whole underground production scheduling exercise must concentrate on combining the development and the production scheduling to compute a robust and a feasible production schedule.In order to quantify the effect of the conventional way of viewing the planning, the concept of the building information model (BIM) needs to be used, which was postulated by Charles Eastman and has been used extensively since the late 1970s. BIM takes other aspects of a project into account, considering at the same time the spatial relationships, quantities and properties of building components, but especially some kind of model visualisation, which is the advantage to be incorporated. This paper presents the basis for an optimisation model that allows for defining the sequence of the mining development so that the production plan can be achieved. For this, the model considers the space dimensions, time, pattern or strategy, cost or benefit, precedence and resources available. Tests were performed considering a block caving and sublevel open stoping method. Finally these tests showed the main conclusion, that production sequence changes when the building capacity is considered.

This paper presents the results of a detailed geotechnical study on the potential multiple seam interaction between the No. 2 Gas (upper) and the Powellton seams, which are separated by an average interburden of 45 ft. The interburden consists of 4 ft of clay shale below the No. 2 Gas seam, 38 ft of massive sandstone, and 3 ft of shale above the Powellton seam. The No. 2 Gas seam was mined about 60 years ago, and many water-pooled areas were projected to be present. The deepest overburden over the No. 2 Gas seam is about 750 ft. To evaluate the potential interaction between the two mine works and to determine the pillar safety factor, Analysis of Multiple Seam Stability (AMSS) software was initially used to determine pillar dimensions to obtain a minimum safety factor of 2.0 for areas under pooled water, as well as a minimum safety factor of 1.5 for areas not under pooled water. Furthermore, to assess the quality of the interburden rock strata, two surface core holes were drilled, and rock cores were tested in the laboratory for their strength and elastic moduli. Using the experimentally determined strengths and moduli as part of the input parameters, the RocScience Phase2 finite element program was employed to model the stress field scenarios and estimate the safety factors of the interburden rock strata before and after Powellton seam mining. The pillar safety factors derived from the Phase2 analysis were in excellent agreement with those obtained from the AMSS analysis. Phase2 results also predicted that the effect of the Powellton seam mining, first mining only, would reach a maximum of 19 ft above the Powellton seam, which led to the proposal of drilling 25-ft deep test holes to detect water, instead of the 45-ft deep test holes mandated by MSHA. The proposed test-hole height was accepted by both Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) District 4 and the state of West Virginia. Mining of the Powellton coal seam commenced in February 2011 and continued for eight months. To date, no 25-ft deep hole has encountered water under the water-pooled zone, which validates the RocScience Phase2 finite element analysis. Also, inmine observation of excellent pillar stability and roof condition confirms the validity of the AMSS analysis.

An abandoned mine shaft near Omar, in Logan County, W, was permanently sealed through a cooperative agreement between the West Virginia Department of Commerce, Labor, and Environmental Resources, Division of Environmental Protection, and the US. Bureau of Mines (USBM), Abandoned Mine Lands (AML) Program. An engineered shaft seal design was developed and demonstrated that featured lightweight concrete as a key material component at a wet density of about 45 lb/ft3. A reinforced concrete cap designed for 5 psi live load was placed over the shaft seal. Applicable new concrete technologies relating to a 100-yr design life were utilized to assure future integrity of the shaft seal. Waterproofing methods were included in the shaft seal design to provide protection from ambient moisture and corrosive mine waters and to increase the long-term durability of the shaft seal. All construction methods used in the field trial are fully adaptable for the mine-reclamation contractor, The USBM research objectives were to develop a broad generic design that will be widely applicable to other adit-sealing and shaft-sealing problems throughout the mining industry.

The following paper aims to present in a much condensed form the salient results of a detailed geological study of the Bisbee quadrangle, Arizona, carried on during the latter part of the year 1902. It is essentially an abstract of the final official report which will shortly appear in the series of professional papers of the U. S. Geological Survey, accompanied by maps, sections and illustrations. I. Geography. The Bisbee quadrangle, which includes the Warren mining district, lies in Cochise county in the southeastern part of Arizona. It is inclosed between the meridians 109" 45' and 110" 00' and the parallels 31" 30' and 31" 201, the latter being locally the Mexican boundarg line. The area of the quadrangle is about 170 square miles, and includes the southeastern half of the Mule Mountains, one of the smaller of the isolated ranges characteristic of this part of Arizona. The Mule Mountains, while less markedly linear than the Dragoon, Huachuca, Chiricahua, and other neighboring ranges, have a general NW-SE. trend. They may be considered as extending from the old mining town of Tombstone to the Mexican border, a distance of about 30 miles. On the northwest they are separated by the broad, flat floor of Sulphur Spring Valley from the Chiricahua Range, and on the southeast by the similar broad valley of the Rio San Pedro from the Huachuca Range. The maximum width of the range is about 12 miles, and its greatest elevation attained by Mt. Ballard, west of Bisbee, is 7,400 ft. above sea-level. An index-map, showing the geographical position of the Bisbee quadrangle, is shown in Fig. 1. Mud is one of the oldest building materials used by man, but it is not only of historic interest. Even today in many parts of the world, particularly lightly forested areas, it is the chief building material. Many authorities believe that at least 30% and perhaps 50% of the world's present population lives in earthen dwellings (Dethier, 1985, Coffman et al., 1990). Not all of these people are members of primitive societies or live in third world countries. European, African, Asian, and both North and South American countries contain a large number of such structures. In the United States, the American West, and particularly the Southwest, is known for this type of construction. Some of the earliest remains of adobe structures are those discovered in the ruins of Neolithic farming villages in Mesopo¬tamia dating as far back as 7000 BC (Steen, 1972). The word adobe has its roots in Egyptian hieroglyphs denoting brick and evolved to its present form through Arabic and Spanish (Lumpkins, 1977). The Spanish conquest of the New World spread the use of wooden molds to produce a standard adobe brick. Today, the word adobe is used to describe various earth building materials and techniques, usually referring to sun-dried adobe brick now used in the United States, but is also applied to puddled adobe structures, mud-plastered logs or branches (Jacal or waddle-and-daub), pressed-earth blocks, and rammed-earth walls or pisé (Smith and Austin, 1989, Ferm, 1985). Modern mud construction is used in many countries in various parts of the world. In the United States, the states from Texas to California are perhaps best known for this type of construction. Of these states, New Mexico has the dominant reputation for adobe use. Indeed, in New Mexico the Santa Fe style (Fig. 1) has made adobe not only acceptable, but preferred. RAW MATERIALS Adobe soil used by present day adobe producers, and probably past adobe producers as well, is principally sandy loam (50% clay and silt), although clayey silts are used in some areas (Coffman et al., 1990). In New Mexico, the best adobe soils are those developed on stream deposits, particularly Holocene (Recent) terrace deposits and older, loosely compacted geologic formations, such as the Santa Fe Group (Tertiary) located in the Rio Grande Valley. Some modern adobe producers use a mixture of materials from the screened fines of aggregate operations and mud from irrigation ditches in the river valleys combined with varying amounts of sand to produce the proper blend. Mineralogy Bulk Mineralogy: X-ray diffraction analyses of whole rock samples from many parts of the world where adobe is the dominant construction material show the major constituents of adobe are quartz and feldspar, with lesser amounts (in order of abundance) of calcite, clay minerals, and gypsum (Coffman et al., 1990). Adobes from and climates contain considerable calcite; in some cases calcite is second only to quartz in volume. Quartz, feldspar, most of the clay minerals, and some calcite commonly are derived from the mechanical/chemical breakdown of older rocks units. Some of the clay minerals, much of the calcite and perhaps all of the gypsum are precipitated from evaporating water. Clay Mineralogy: Clay-size minerals consist dominantly of clay minerals, but nearly clay-size fractions contain minor amounts of quartz and calcite, and occasionally other nonclay minerals. In earth construction materials from New Mexico, clay-size particles are the most compositionally variable in commercial adobe soils. However, the clay mineral groups in this size fraction consist of about equal parts of expandable clay minerals (smectite and mixed¬layer illite/smectite or I/S) and non-expandable clay minerals (ka¬olinite, illite, and chlorite), with minor quartz, calcite, and feldspar (Smith and Austin, 1989, Austin, 1990). In the and American Southwest, smectite is commonly calcium-rich and the I/S is dis¬organized and randomly interstratified. In a study of 42 New Mex¬ican commercial adobe soils, only two contained chlorite, and vermiculite, sepiolite, and palygorskite were not found. Soils in temperate climates, as are found in the midwestern and northeastern United States, contain an abundance of illite (Potter et al., 1975). The clay minerals in earthen structures of that region and in Europe commonly contain illite with less amounts of kaolinite, smectite, I/S, chlorite, and vermiculite. In contrast, the clay-size fractions of soils of humid tropical areas are typically acid, with kaolinite as the dominant clay mineral and lesser amounts of I/S, illite, smectite, and others (Chamley, 1989).

D EC. 20-The spirit of Christmas and good will toward men has managed a few brief appearances on the front pages, welcome relief from man's usual ill-will toward man. A couple politicos did their best to brighten the scene by well-publicized romances. There was a general exodus to Florida to patch up nervous systems, and even the UNO quieted down as Mr. Vyshinsky departed for home via Eastern Germany. Before going he opened up a preliminary bombardment for the worldwide "communist peace offensive," and it is now the duty of the 600 million (according to the Cominform) ideological converts to press home the attack. In Washington, Mr. Lilienthal resigned as Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission and demonstrated again the difficulty of government to retain the services of capable men. The President has yet to appoint another victim- possibly someone nicely noncontroversial and timid. So might the critics be appeased, but it would bode ill for the rapid exploitation of peaceful uses of atomic energy, the relaxation of excessive secrecy, wider sharing of developmental work with friendly nations and possible revision of the Acheson-Lilienthal proposals for inter- national control of the atomic bomb.

"Most of the recent large discoveries of zinc, lead and silver in Western Canada are Paleozoic-aged stratiform deposits that occur within the limits of the tectonic sub-province of the Canadian Cordillera known as Selwyn Basin. Bounded on either side by coeval carbonate platforms. Selwyn Basin trends northwest for 1300 km from northeast British Columbia to Alaska. Paleozoic rocks of Selwyn Basin consist primarily of chert, shale and coarser-grained clastic sedimentary rocks with minor volcanic rocks.The Selwyn Basin deposits have few counterparts elsewhere in Canada, but have a close similarity in geological setting, mineralogy and morphology to well-known deposits such as McArthur (HYC) in Australia, Meggen and Rammelsberg in West Germany, and Sullivan in British Columbia. Recent studies of these deposits have led to an emerging, but now generally accepted, model of ore deposition in which stratabound zinc-lead-silver shale-hosted or ""sedimentary-exhalative"" (sedex) deposits are precipitated in active tectonic environments from metalliferous geothermal brines that rise to the sea floor along deep-seated fault zones. Although their mineralogy and ore metal zoning can be similar to that of volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits, most sedex deposits have only a weak genetic link with volcanism.Sedex mineralization in Selwyn Basin has been identified within three separate ages of shale or its metamorphosed equivalent. The lower Cambrian-age Anvil Camp in central Yukon Territory contains the only producing mine (Faro). Important lower Silurian-age zinc-lead mineralization is at Howards Pass along the Yukon - Northwest Territories border. Barite and zinc-lead-barite mineralization of upper Devonian age occurs across Selwyn Basin. Potentially economic deposits have been found at Macmillan Pass, along the Yukon - Northwest Territories border and in the Gataga District of northeastern British Columbia."

The criteria for designing a crushing chamber are presented and a program for designing the shape of the chamber is proposed. During the chamber shape design, major design parameters are analyzed first, optimized parameters are determined next and the basic shape of chamber is figured out finally. In the basic chamber design program, the influence of abrasion of basic chamber shape and material characteristic are not accounted for usually. Here, based on the minimum abrasion of chamber shape and uniform particle size theory, the equation for chamber surface curve and the transcending function were formulated and a low-abrasion chamber was designed. Since the chamber shape designed based on experience and experiments is not necessarily the best, optimal design of the crushing chamber shape was carried out. Cubic spline function was used to represent the chamber shape curve and a mathematical model was formulated. The optimal shape solution was obtained using a complex method. Finally, the optimal chamber shape was determined by matching the moving cone stroke S, moving cone speed N and the moving cone bottom angle Thus, superior technical performance of the cone chamber was achieved.

S. T. Killian (Johnstown, Pa.)—This is one of the finest papers I have read. Tying in stoichiometric calculations with furnace performance and practice is a step which had to be taken sooner or later. The noteworthy difference between Dr. Joseph's type of calculations and regular blast furnace calculations is that the Ib mol system is used as a basis. With the Ib mol system, weights, volumes, and chemical reactions can all be expressed in the same equation. In the paper, wind, ore, flux, and fuel are all expressed as lb or lb mols. Probably Dr. Joseph does not realize it, but the vague word coke appears only twice in the entire paper. Lb of C and Ib mols of C are followed through reactions but the word coke appears only as 1560 lb coke per ton of pig and 1700 lb of coke per ton of iron. Obviously in order to understand furnace reactions, the coke should be expressed as lb or lb mols of C. Furnaces can also be compared more easily. In some respects the paper is too thorough and too complete. The effects of the metalloids reduced into the iron upon the top gases represents a difference of less than 3 pct of the CO formed in the bosh. Due to the completeness of the calculations in relation to the CO/CO2 ratio, this was included and was necessary. However, the exclusion might have enabled more furnace men to follow the lb mol system of calculations through the blast furnace to a better degree. By considering only irons of similar analysis, this part of the calculations might have been omitted. However, if this had been done, total rewriting of the paper later would have been necessary in order to make the work complete as it is now. It also would not have been nearly as authoritative. In the paper, there appears the reaction: H2O + CO ? CO2 + H2 [I] Dr. Joseph states that he did not take this reaction into consideration in any calculations pertaining directly to the paper. The piobable reason- for this is that although it contains all the main reacting top gases except N2, it is rather inflexible since it is monomolecular in relation to each of the reacting gases and does not tie in with the gasification of C. Actually the reactions: H2O + C ? CO + H2 [2] 2H2O + C ? CO2 + H2 [31 and the solution loss reaction: CO2 + c ? 2c0 [41 tend to assume an equilibrium through the reaction: H2O + CO ? CO2 + H2 [I] which should be considered a balancing or equilibrium reaction. Reactions 2, 3 and 4 permit furnace conditions to balance with the CO/CO2 ratio and H2 formation. They tie in with the solution loss. Reaction 1 unites them chemically. Probably the best calculation to make at this time would be to try to find the relative importance of the CO2 from the flux and the H2 in the dilution on an actual furnace gas analysis. For this purpose the Dob-scha-Carnegie-Illinois paper—"Effect of Sized and Sintered Mesabi Iron Ores On Blast Furnace Performance" is chosen. This paper was presented before the blast furnace section of the AIME in 1948. This represents the best large scale furnace operation available to me. Unfortunately the changes were brought about by beneficiation of the burden and not by changes on one burden. In choosing the basis for the calculation in relation to the furnace, 100 mols of dry top sgas is chosen. This leaves something to be desired inasmuch as the nitrogen basis is changing but I believe it will be better understood than any other type and it is the easiest to use.

The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with Washington Irrigation and Development Co. (WIDCO), evaluated the dewatering of fine coal-refuse slurry using chemicals and various types and combinations of drains in natural earth impoundments. About 40 lb of lime and 2 lb of polymer per ton of dry solids were mixed with the underflow from the preparation-plant thickener. Clear, free water was immediately liberated from the slurry. The percent solids by weight of the slurry increased from about 17 to 30 immediately, and after 5 days increased to 45 wt-pct. This indicates a threefold reduction in total volume after 5 days from 172 cu ft/ton solids originally to 56 cu ft/ton solids.

The aim of this work was to heat treat and characterize sintered valve seat inserts (VSI). The powder metallurgy route was the only way found to substitute cobalt and lead, used in the VSI original alloy, due to their high cost and toxicological effect, respectively. The studied VSI was obtained with AISI M2 high-speed steel powder mixed with iron powder and other additives such as manganese sulphide, graphite, zinc stearate, carbides and copper, which was added by metallic infiltration. All the VSI were air quenched and double tempered, for one hour each, at seven different equidistantly temperatures, ranging from 100 °C up to 700 °C. The physical and mechanical properties were evaluated by means of the VSI apparent density, apparent hardness and crush radial strength. The chemical composition was determined through gas analysis, for the light elements such as carbon and sulfur, and energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry for other elements. Microstructural characterization was performed with the support of scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. Regarding the VSI final application, the best results were achieved with the inserts air quenched and double tempered at 600 °C.

Control of the environment is as old as mining. Engineers have always had to consider how best to deal with the surface, and the character of the surface environment always affects mining method in some way. However, if the relationship of the mine to the environment is old, today's approach is new. For one thing, land, air and water formerly could be viewed simply as obstacles to be overcome or resources to be utilized to win ore at the lowest possible cost. Now we have come to realize that these nonmineral components of the environment also are highly valuable. For another thing, environ- mental protection has become a public policy issue. Again, a special public interest in land and land use is old. From the firs(, the crown claimed extra rights in valuable minerals, and to this day a multitude of laws and regulations control-and tax-land use in every country. What is new is the detailed public attention bring given to waste management practices, whether these wastes be in the form of solids, liquids or gases, and regardless of where in the environment they appear. (It is convenient to lump all mining environmental problems, including hank fires and subsidence, together under the term "waste management," for in effect that is what they are.) As a result of these changes, the mining engineer must consider that lie is dealing with two productive resources the minerals and the remainder of the environment-and he must expect that lie will be judged not only on his efficiency in recovering the one but also on his effectiveness in protecting the other. Further, in seeking to protect the environment, the modern mining-environmental engineer has a dual role. First, there is the obvious task of finding better ways for industry to cope with waste-management problems in actual operations. Second, there is the less obvious but equally important task of helping formulate appropriate public policy objectives for the environment. Throughout; the section it is assumed that mining is an acceptable land use for the tracts under consideration. The question of whether mining will be permitted at all on these tracts is a further public-policy issue, ultimately to be resolved politically and thus, since it is beyond the scope of engineering, is not a subject that can be usefully discussed in a mining handbook. Finally, none of the statements in the section are predicated on the assumption that required waste-management measures will be privately profitable in the conventional sense. Indeed, the reverse is more likely to be the case-at least if accounts are kept so as to include all appreciable costs and a normal rate of return on investment in waste-disposal and reclamation equipment.',',' However, it is clear that improved waste management will be required of mining firms and that, to a considerable although undetermined degree, this expenditure is in the best long-run interest of both public and industry. The several studies that have attempted to quantify the impact of mining on the environment are admittedly rough but still provide enough information to indicate that there is a big job to be done. Seven samples of Pennsylvania anthracite from the Bottom Ross bed were analyzed and tested to obtain data on cleaning characteristics, proximate and ultimate analyses, specific gravity, grindability, heating value, and ash softening temperature. Ash content of the samples varied irregularly from 9.0 to 34.4 percent, the range being narrowed to an upper limit of 14.8 percent ash by removing impurities dense enough to sink in a medium with a specific gravity of 1.90. Ash content of the sink material with specific gravity greater than 1.90 ranged from 56.4 to 80.4 percent; corresponding specific gravities were 2.095 to 2.534. Volatile matter contents were indicated to be higher for the ash-forming minerals than for the pure coal substance in the various specific gravity fractions of a given sample. Specific gravities of anthracites with compa¬rable ash contents but from different locations in the bed varied as much as 0.06. The grindability index increased significantly with increasing ash con¬tent of specific gravity fractions from all the samples.

This paper describes developments in ferro-nickel furnace technology, specifically improvements to cooling methods, furnace controls, and high voltage furnace operating regime. The evolution of these technologies is briefly presented, as context for describing the current state of the art that has enabled ferro-nickel furnace operation at over 75 MW and specific energy consumption of less than 400 kWh/t dry ore. Examples from existing operations are used to illustrate present best practices, and potential future trends are discussed: The paper begins with an overview of the fundamental aspects of pyrometallurgical treatment of lateritic ores that drive ferro-nickel furnace design. Furnace wall cooling methods are related to the requirements resulting from specific furnace process conditions, including slag and metal compositions, as well as arc and bath power. The benefits of high productivity and low specific energy consumption resulting from high voltage (shielded-arc) operating practice are discussed, along with the furnace controls and electrical power train that enable such operation even with captive power generation. This paper is an update of that which the authors prepared for the Infacon X ferro-alloys conference.

Three phases of Bi2O3 were first synthesized by extraction-stripping precipitation and post decomposition from BiCl3 leaching solution. The as-prepared Bi2O3 were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectra (FT-IR), scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM, TEM), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The photocatalytic performances of the oxides were investigated by decomposing rhodamine B (RB) under visible irradiation. It shows that the Bi2O3 with different crystal structures and morphology were obtained under different decomposition temperature. The band gaps of as-prepared samples were 2.36, 2.41, and 2.78 eV for b-Bi2O3, a-Bi2O3, and d-Bi2O3, respectively, and the photocatalytic activities followed the order: b-Bi2O3 > a-Bi2O3 > d-Bi2O3, which was in good accordance with the photoluminescence spectra measurement results. The b-Bi2O3 exhibited the best photocatalytic performance which can effectively degrade 99.23% RB within 240 min.

The article deals with stabilisation and regeneration of Ce02 and Ce02/Zr02 based Pt water gas shift catalysts, subject to high initial deactivation. The reaction gas species effect on the catalyst deactivation was investigated by H2-TPR. Activity measurements enabled the effect of different promoters, some added to the Ce02 based catalysts and some to the Ce02/Zr02 based Pt catalysts, to be investigated. The catalysts were also characterised by BET and CO-TPR. Deactivated catalysts activity was restored by using various regeneration methods. Of the two selected carriers the Ce02/Zr02 based Pt catalyst showed the highest resilience to deactivation. For the two different carriers, Ce02 and Ce02/Zr02, Wand Re were the best promoters when the catalyst was subject to deactivation. Experiments with Hr TPR indicate a fast initial change in the platinum oxides concentration and composition. The CO-TPR was used to make conclusions about the various regeneration effects of water and oxygen on the catalyst. Finally it is suggested that not one deactivation mechanism is possible and which mechanism that dominates is dependant on the catalyst and the reaction gas composition.

The recycling of lead-acid batteries in the United States has become a challenge as to how to balance ever increasing environmental regulation and cost with efficient operations. East Penn's captive secondary lead smelter has developed into a recycling facility producing lead, polypropylene, sulfuric acid, ammonium bisulfite, and non-hazardous discard slag. The emphasis has been to design a facility to comply with environmental regulations, to eliminate wastes, and to produce products, while at the same time, continuing to supply the company's battery manufacturing raw material needs.

Two hundred years ago next April, our forebears embarked upon the difficult path to national independence. They succeeded, and shook off the yoke of foreign domination. In the ensuing two centuries, the country was mobilized several times to protect that political and economic independence from foreign domination. These efforts were also successful. Thus, as we stand here on the threshold of our third century of political independence, we can thank previous generations and congratulate ourselves for establishing and maintaining the world's oldest republic. Now -- once again -- the United States faces the challenge of foreign intervention into our economy. This time the battleground is resource avail- ability. America has been blessed with enormous resources. Whether we speak of minerals or timber or water or "amber waves of grain," this nation has benefitted from a resource base that is the envy of the world. This asset, coupled with a political system that permitted us to develop it, has been the physical backbone of our independence. Without the economic independence that this resource base has given us, the political independence we fought for would have been tenuous, at best.

During several months in 1996 and 1997, Cyprus Twentymile Coal Co. (TCC) set world production records at its Twentymile Mine in northwestern Colorado. These records were due to the company's implementation of a state-of-the-art longwall mining and conveyance system along with a -highly dedicated work force. This article is a case study of the design of long panels at the mine from conception to implementation. Obstacles that needed to be overcome included subsidence engineering, environmental regulations, conveyance, ventilation, equipment design and continuous miner (CM) development timing.

From 19 November 1996, South African companies will be able to manage the impact their activities have on the environment in terms of international standards. The establishment of a registration scheme for environmental management systems was formally announced by the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) (19 November 1996). At a function held at the SABS head office in Pretoria, Dr Jean du Plessis, President of the SABS, announced the launch of the SABS ISO 14001 registration scheme which is based upon ISO 14001, 'the internationally recognized yardstick for environmental management'.
