Corporations today must comply with an ever growing number of complex and increasingly stringent environmental laws and regulations. An environmental audit program is an effective means in which to uniformly and systematically assess compliance, and to assure management that environmental liabilities are being minimized. This paper describes the design and implementation of Homestake Mining Company's environmental audit program, which has as its primary focus the objective verification of compliance with external requirements and internal good management practices. Major elements of the audit program discussed in the paper include: pre-audit preparation; on-site audit activities; and the post-audit report.

Discovered in 1896, the Sons of Gwalia orebody was initially mined by unground methods. Euring the mine's uderground operations workings reached a vertical depth of 1080 metres. The same orebody is now being mined by open cut methods. The present operation mines a broad envelope of mineralisation surrounding old stopes, whereas the original underground operation concentrated on mining high grade parts of the Gwalia Lode System. Underground mining continued up to 1963 when operations ceased due to high operating costs and the low grade of ore mined. In 1984 a new company, Sons of Gwalia NL, commenced open cut operations.

The Equity Silver mine has been a severe producer of Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) since 1982. The mine was closed in 1994 and a compacted clay cover installed, but ARD continues to be produced. Three permanent employees manage the collection and treatment system at the site. The site still poses a significant environmental risk to the environment and downstream users and requires a high level of diligence. Various stakeholders' perspectives of the risk posed by Equity, and what constitutes acceptable risk, will be examined in this paper from a company operation staff, corporate environmental manager and downstream environmentalist perspective.

The Transportable Moisture Limits, as ,measured by the procedures laid down in The IMCO Code of Safe Practices for Bulk Cargoes, determine the target moisture contents for the concentrates produced at the West Coast Mines of Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited at Rosebery. Filtration of these concentrates gives moisture contents considered to be low in comparison with those achieved for similar sulphide concentrates, but which are very close to these Transportable Moisture Limits. The filtering techniques used are outlined and the problems associated with-maintaining concentrate moistures below the required limits, together with the methods used to solve these problems are discussed.

ABSTRACT Since 1964, the Iron Ore Company of Canada has deposited iron ore tailings into Wabush Lake in western Labrador, Canada. From 1999 to 2008, the authors completed multibeam bathymetric and sampling surveys and an airborne LiDAR survey. These data were integrated to study the evolution of the tailings delta shoreline and lakebed elevation. Subaqueous channels evolved between surveys, influencing the tailings depositional pattern. With this analysis it is possible to evaluate the effect of disposal strategies on the delta topset and tailings accumulation. This project uniquely couples marine and terrestrial techniques to follow the fate of tailings in a dispersal system.

Operations of these two mining companies have some superficial similarities-geographical location, production rates, comparatively large ore reserves; but any critical comparison of mining and milling procedures or of economics must take into account the striking differences in geological environment and mineralogy of the respective ore deposits. The properties are only about 20 miles apart on an upland surface of moderate relief (part of the Interior Plateau of central B. C.) which occupies an area east of Thompson River between the towns of Ashcroft and Merritt. Being in the "dry belt" of British Columbia, water conservation is necessary at both operations.

THE Granby Consolidated Mining, Smelting and Power Company, Limited, is engaged in the mining and concentrating of copper ores, and, incidentally, in the mining of coal and the production of electric power. The Company has been engaged in these various operations both on the mainland of British Columbia and on Vancouver island for the past forty-five years. This paper will attempt to cover their present operations in the Similkameen mining district of southern interior British Columbia. GENERAL CHARACTER OF THE DISTRICT The Interior Plateau in southern British Columbia ranges in elevation from 3,000 feet to 6,000 feet. In the vicinity of Princet0n, a depression in the Plateau forms a well defined basin which is floored with a series of nearly flat-lying Tertiary sediments containing some workable seams of lignite. From this basin, the upland surface rises gradually t0ward the south, from an elevation of 2,000 feet at Princet0n to 4,000 feet at Copper mountain, and 6,000 feet in the upper parts of the Similkameen basin, where it merges into the rugged and diversified t0pography of the Cascade system, with glacier inhabited peaks rising to over 9,000 feet. The valleys of Similkameen river and its tributaries are wide, having flaring sides and gentle slopes, and are separated one from another by subdued rounded spurs, of which Copper mountain is typical. The drainage of this district is taken care of by Similkameen river and its larger tributaries, such as Pasayten river, and Wolfe, Friday, and Whipsaw creeks. The name Copper mountain is applied to a gently arched, nearly flat-topped spur between the deep valley of Similkameen river to the west and the shallower valley of Wolfe creek tO the east. The mountain is appro-priately named from the number of copper deposits occurring on its sides and summit, some of which have been developed int0 an important producer, known as the Copper Mountain mine.

Geologic mapping techniques at the Bingham Mine have evolved as rapidly expanding applications of geological data have caused new methods to be utilized. The most significant changes in method have been in the preparation of the base map and in computer application of collected data. Formerly maps were prepared by surveying with transit or plane table. Currently a photogrammetric map, on the scale of 1-inch equals 200-feet, is prepared semi-annually and continuously updated to keep pace with the removal of more than 350,000 tons of material daily. Larger scale bases for specific problems, such as areas having unstable slopes, are prepared by use of aerial and terrestial photography and photo mosaics. Note sheets designed for computer application enable fast processing of the data. Application of geology at the Bingham Mine has been increasing rapidly in recent years. The effect of structure, rock type, and alteration on slope stability, the relationship of sulfide mineral distribution to concentrating results, the effect of rock and mineral types on waste dump leaching, and requirements of a reliable internal source of silica flux for smelting are a few of the problems which require the collection and application of geologic data.

In 1985, ASARCO Incorporated terminated copper smelting operations and associated byproduct arsenic trioxide recovery at Tacoma, WA, although shipments of arsenic trioxide from stocks and limited production from cleanup operations continued. Imports of arsenic trioxide increased markedly as a result of increased demand for arsenical wood preservatives and the decline in domestic shipments of trioxide. Expanded world capacity more than met the increased demand for arsenic and its compounds, and prices remained unchanged throughout the year. Domestic Data Coverage.-Arsenic trioxide was produced by one U.S. company, which voluntarily reported its production to the Bureau of Mines.

TWO papers on health and safety were given Thursday afternoon when a joint session of the Health and Safety Committee and the Mining Methods Committee was held. T. T. Read presided and the first paper, on ventilation at Climax, was presented by the author, L. H. Glanville. In the subsequent discussion by Cloyd M. Smith, P. B. Bucky, B. F. Tillson, D. F. Haley, J. L. G. Weysser, and others a number of interesting points not covered by the paper, which appears in full in the January Mining Technology, were brought out. Ventilation troubles in mines so often hinge on the air being too hot and damp that it was interesting to hear of one where it is frequently too cold and too dry.

"This paper presents results of destructive tests performed on rectangular coal specimen under the influence of two vertical and simultaneous wedge indentation forces. Several wedge designs and spacings were utilized in compression tests. The objective of these experiments was to qualitatively monitor the effect of different wedge designs and spacings on the stress distribution within the coal specimen.Coal samples from the Waynesburg coal seam were cut and trimmed to cubical dimensions of approximately 5 X 10 X 20 cm. These specimen were subjected to parallel compressive forces through two vertically applied wedge indentors. Loading was achieved with a hydraulic hand pump in order to facilitate interferogram construction. The load increments were limited due to the sensitivity of the holographic interferometric technique (holometry) in measuring small displacements; therefore, interferograms were taken only during similar increments in order to allow for a qualitative comparison between different wedge design and spacings. In some cases, interferograms were taken immediately before and after failure of the specimen.Introduction Failure Modes Three distinct modes of failure occur when geologic materials are subjected to wedge indentation forces. As shown in Figure 1, a crushed zone is located immediately adjacent to the indentor while chipping can occur if the fractures initiated in the crushed zone extend upwards to the free surface.. The third failure mode is a zone of intricate frac¬tures located between the crushed zone and the chipping zone. Several experiments have been conducted over the years to better understand crater formation and stress distribution within geologic materials under the influence of an indentor. Generally speaking, crack initiation and propogation observed in these experi¬ments correlate fairly well with wedge indentation theory; however, the nature of the .fractures is greatly influenced by different material properties such as grain size and cleavage planes. In other words, a wide range of behavior has been found in different rocks subjected to wedge penetration. For example, it has been observed that some rocks are merely crushed and indented while others are more prone to cracking and chip formation. Therefore, the development or nondevelopment of chips depends mostly on wedge geometry, rock type and depth of penetration. This work is part of the study associated with opti¬mization of cutting parameters, which is best modeled by using brittle materials and subjecting them to rigid wedge penetration tests."

This report describes exploration for lead-zinc ores at the Madonna mine between 1945 and 1953 by the Utze Lode Co., the Bureau of Mines, and the company with Government financial aid under the Defense Production Act of 1950. The Madonna mine yielded silver, lead, and zinc with a net smelter value of over $5,000.000. from 1882 to 1924. The mine was inactive from 1924 to 1942 when the Utze Lode Co. acquired the property. Possibilities for finding ore in the mine, especially at depth, were considered favorable. The Utze Lode Co. began rehabilitating the Madonna mine in 1945. An exploration program, which consisted of winze sinking and drifting, failed to produce commercial are.

At the request of several Federal agencies, tests were conducted on a relatively recent type of anthracite -burning equipment named the Anthratube. This device, rated at 130,000 B.t .u. per hour, was designed to burn Pea-size anthracite automatically for steam or hot-water house heating and for domes-tic hot -water supply. "CONSTRUCI'ION OF SHERRITT'S CONCENTRATORSSherritt Gordon is operating two mills north of the 56th parallel, and is presently engaged in building a third. The author was closely involved in the design and construction of all three of these concentrators.The Lynn mill is the oldest of these three concentrators-it is a 4,000 ton per day nickel-copper plant built in 1953. The Fox mill is a 3,000 ton per day copper-zinc concentrator built in 1970. The Ruttan mill will be a 10,000 ton per day copper-zinc plant scheduled to go on line in July 1973.LYNN MILL The Lynn mill including the crushing, concentrating, drying and load out plant is about 69,700 square feet or 17.4 square feet per ton per day. '!his plant was originally built in 1927 at Sherridon, 150 miles south of Lynn Lake, as a 2,000 ton per day copper-zinc plant. In 1952 the plant was moved by tractor train to Lynn Lake. The whole plant was re-oriented within the original perimeter walls as a 2,000 ton per day nickel-copper plant. This plant was expanded to 4,000 tons per day by the addition of t1-Jo rod mills and a 5-1/2 short head crusher in 1959.The Sherridon mill processed its last ore in Sherridon in September 1951 and the first load of nickel concentrate was loaded at Lynn Lake on November 9, 1953 when the railroad arrived at Lynn Lake.The site for the Lynn Lake mill was cleared of overburden in the summer of 1952 and foundations for structural steel and SO!l8 equipment foundations were poured the late summer and fall of 1952 • Steel was erected from January to June 1953. Most of the equipment came in from January to March of 1953 by tractor sleighs. Sane sleighs upset but no equipment was lest through the ice."

It is well known that carbon management is essential for minimising soluble gold losses in carbonin- leach (CIL) and carbon-in-pulp (CIP) circuits. Even so, carbon measurements remain predominantly a manual operation with a low amount of control and automation around CIL and CIP reactors. Carbon inventory, i.e. knowing the carbon concentration in each reactor, is crucial for good carbon management. CarbonSense, a novel in-situ measurement system, was therefore developed for continuous monitoring of the carbon concentration in each reactor and paves the way for more advanced control in gold operations. The carbon management and optimisation system is based on Outotec® HSC Sim dynamic process simulations where each process component is modelled in detail. Generated models are validated with real data from a particular operation. The simulator will allow for the carbon control sequence to be realistically tested and the efficiency optimised by controlling the feed and discharge pumps in a hazard- and risk-free process environment. Furthermore, by combining CarbonSense and Outotec® gold courier (online soluble gold measurements) continuous feed-forward and feedback information can be obtained. The optimiser will then define the best running parameters based on the cost function of gold production versus intrinsic factors such as utility costs and adsorption time. Eventually, the application can be installed parallel with a real process island and it can be continuously calibrated with real-time process data. The dynamic model will then create future predictions for the entire process island. The example case presents a CIL circuit, which is simulated using Outotec® HSC Chemistry Sim and operated through Outotec® ACT (Advanced Control Tool) application. SCRAP metals to the value of more than a billion and a half dollars were recovered in the United States in 1939 for further use in industry. Few people have any true conception of the magnitude of the secondary-metal industry as related to that engaged in the production of the primary, or virgin, metals; of its importance, particularly when a shortage of primary metals exists, as at present; or of the advance that has been made in standardizing and improving the quality of its products. Of the iron and steel produced in the United States in 1939 (the data used in this article are largely taken from Bureau of Mines reports for that year) just over 50 per cent came from scrap and slightly less than 50 per cent from ore. Of the principal nonferrous metals-aluminum, anti-mony, copper, lead, nickel, tin, and zinc-63 per cent came from domestic ores and 37 per cent from scrap. Fig. 1 presents graphically the relative tonnage and value of primary and secondary production of ferrous and nonferrous metals. In this chart only purchased secondary metals are considered, the figures being exclusive of "home" or "plant" scrap which amounts to rather large figures in the iron and steel industry. Incidentally, the chart shows that from the tonnage standpoint the iron and steel industry is some twenty times larger than the nonferrous industry, though with regard to the value of the product the ratio drops to about two to one.

The value of Alabama's nonfuel mineral production in 1978 and 1979 was 8831.8 million and $336.4 million, respectively. In 1978, nearly all commodities registered an increase in production and value; unit value increased for all commodities, with the exception of native asphalt and sand and gravel. Alabama led the Nation in the production of crushed marble and was second in bauxite, third in masonry cement, kaolin, native asphalt, and oyster shell, and fourth in bentonite, dimension marble, fire clay, and scrap mica. Trend; and Developments.-The Alabama State Docks at the Port of Mobile handled more than 10 million tons of bulk material in fiscal year 1978; volume dropped slightly to 9.8 million tons in fiscal 1979. Bulk materials comprise the major activity at the facility, with iron ore and bauxite being two of the major materials handled. The movement of these ores is vital to the operation of many heavy industries in the State.

"Philosophy" addresses the definition and assigning of importance to the marketing of by-products. Two examples, one in metals and the other in industrial minerals, explore prime product to by-product relationships. Relative revenues from all products illustrate the importance of by-products to economic feasibility. "Mechanics" takes a broad view of the types of marketing organizations that are applicable to individual circumstances in the marketplace. In-house marketing as well as agents, merchants and trading companies are outlined and discussed. Philosophy Definition Of Terms Philosophy Definition Of Terms The definition of terns for a paper such as this is generally a necessary but not-very-interesting exercise. However, in simply trying to clearly define the term "by-product" some interesting relationships between products arise and the line of demarcation between "product" and "by-product" often becomes obscure. The search for that distinction represents the philosophy portion of the title. A couple of definitions of philosophy can even help to set the tone for what follows. According to Webster, philosophy is : 1 Pursuit of wisdom. 2. A search for a general understanding of values and reality.

This report will be given in two sections. The first sec¬tion outlines techniques and equipment to form almond shaped fluorspar briquettes by means of briquet presses, and the second section outlines techniques of the balling disc. PART I - BRIQUET PRESSES Fluorspar has been briquetted for a number of years and the so called "peach pit" briquet is known to many steelmen. Present production is estimated at over 100,000 tons annually. Slide 1 shows an assortment of various sizes and shapes of briquettes. It is possible to form fluorspar into almost any configuration of briquet. For safety on the melting floor, pillow type briquets are preferred. Ease of mechanical handling and durability of the product are facil¬itated by an almond shape. The dimensions of the almond can vary from 1-in. to 1-1/2-in. in length, from 13/16-in. to 1-in. in width and from 1/2-in. to 1-in. in thickness. The type of equipment to pro¬duce almond shaped fluorspar briquettes is shown in Slide 2. Here we have a Komarek-Greaves and Company 300 ton briquettor equipped with almond rolls. This machine is capable of producing fluorspar briquettes at a rats of 30 tons per hour with power consumption of 35 hp per ton par hour.

"The Mac porphyry molybdenum prospect is located 100 km east of Smithers in central British Columbia. The identification of anomalous levels of molybdenum, copper, and silver in three adjacent lakes, sampled during a regional lake sediment survey, lead to the discovery of molybdenite mineralization in float. Subsequent magnetic and soil geochemistry surveys, together with prospecting and mapping, located the source of the float. Mineralization is hosted by a leucocratic granite stock of the Upper Jurassic to Lower Cretaceous Francois Lake Intrusions which has intruded Carboniferous and Permian Cache Creek Group volcanic and sedimentary rocks. The stock measures 500 m by 300m at surface and is mineralized throughout. Sulphide mineralogy is simple and consists of molybdenite with minor pyrite and local chalcopyrite. Molybdenite occurs within fractures and as selvages along quartz stockwork veins and is best developed near the margins of the stock.Known mineralization is coincident with distinct soil geochemistry and magnetic anomalies. Two additional areas of the property display similar features and these remain to be tested.IntroductionThe Mac property is situated in the Babine Lake area of central British Columbia on NTS map sheet 93K/13E, approximately 100 km east of the town of Smithers (Fig. 1). The property lies on the western margin of the Hogem Range at the northern tip of the Nechako Plateau. The centre of the claim block lies at 54°51 ' 30""N and 125 °34 '30""W.Topographically, the claims are characterized by gently rolling hills ranging in elevation from 900 m to 1500 m. Slopes are forested with tall conifers and underbrush is minimal. Flat-lying areas are swampy with tall grasses and scrub brush.Presently, the property is only accessible by helicopter from bases located in Smithers and Fort St. James. Recent road construction by the British Columbia Forest Service has brought road access from Burns Lake to within 5 km due south of the property. It is expected that in the near future, roads will be advanced into the claim area to facilitate logging of mature timber."
