OpeRations on the Texas Gulf Coast during 1936 increased materially over 1935. A number of new fields were discovered and a few of the older fields were extended, both by the discovery of deeper pay sands and by lateral expansion of the known producing horizons. Twenty-seven new fields have been discovered, of which 25 are oil fields and the others are gas fields that have every indication of becoming oil-producing areas. Amelia, Anahuac, Bay City, North Pettus, Placedo, Pickett Ridge and Tomoconnor have had major extensions. Production for 1936 amounted to 91,224,844 bbl., an increase of 21,627,033 bbl., or 31 per cent, over the 1935 production of 69,597,811 bbl. The number of producing wells at the end of 1936 was 6727, as compared with 4851 at the end of 1935. Proration has continued in force, thus decreasing the rate of depletion and the number of abandonments normally expected. New Fields A brief discussion of the new fields follows, in addition to Tables 1 and 2, which contain the general data on these fields. Aransas (McCampbell).-Buckingham and McCampbell No. 1 McCampbell was drilled to 7501 ft., then plugged back to 6560 ft. and completed in the Marginulina for a 100-bbl. flowing well on July 18. Bee County.—The Voss field, discovered by Swiger and Devonian's No. 1 Voss, and the Holzmark field, discovered by Miller and Donzis on the Holzmark farm, are both of the same type structurally and are caused by folding against a fault, one field being on one side of a fault and the other on the opposite side of the same fault. Brooks County.—-Standard Oil Company of Texas Garcia No. 1, the discovery well in the Alta Mew field, and Dick Young's Singer No. 1, the discovery well of Alta Verde, appear to indicate small fields. Garcia No. 1 was drilled to 8022 ft. and plugged back to 2485 ft., at which depth the well made 189 barrels. "Maclaren Forest Products Inc.Lime is commonly used for the neutralization of acid, and the removal of heavy metals in mine waste waters. However, the precipitation of heavy metals as hydroxides must take place under conditions of controlled pH, to produce minimum concentrations of dissolved metals. An account is presented explaining the concepts applied to lime-treatment processes at Bell Mine during the period of a supernatant discharge to Babine Lake; October 18, 1982to January 25, 1983. IntroductionBell Mine of Maclaren Forest Products Inc., Babine Mining Division, an open-pit copper mine, is located on Newman Peninsula, Babine Lake approximately 65 kilometres northeast of the town of Smithers, British Columbia (Fig. 1).A depressed market for copper metal in 1982 forced a management decision to suspend operations at the mine for an indefinite period from October 3 I, 1982. For some time prior to the mine closing date, mine management was concerned about the increasing level of supernatant in the tailings pond , and its possible effects on the stability of the dam when cycloning of mill tailings ceased. Consideration of these potential hazards led to an application being filed with the Provincial Waste Management for a permit to discharge the excess water to Babine Lake. This large lake, an important link with several significant salmon spawning sites, is a major contributor to the British Columbia commercial fishing industry. Jurisdiction for the environmental affairs in the area is shared by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, the Environmental Protection Service, and the Provincial Waste Management Branch. These agencies were directly concerned in the formulation of discharge permit following joint consultation, and exchange of information with the company on environmental concerns. An approval was finally granted to discharge approximately 1,000,000 cubic metres of supernatant from the tailings impoundment at Bell Mine into Hagan Arm, Babine Lake from October 18, 1982 with a daily discharge not to exceed 9000 cubic metres. Provisions were made that a particular discharge procedure be followed, and that the company would be responsible for setting up a sampling and monitoring program to safeguard the quality of the effluent."

The measures taken by Rand Carbide Limited from the 1950s to 1976 to control dust emission from the electric furnaces at its Witbank factory are described. A new design of furnace for calcium carbide followed by a dry-fabric filtration plant for the furnace gases was not successful in arresting the dust. A 131 m chimney commissioned in 1968 effectively dispersed the dust-laden gases from both carbide and ferrosilicon production and so brought considerable alleviation. In 1974 a bag-filter dust-collecting plant was successfully commissioned on a 6 MV.A carbide furnace, and this was followed in 1976 by a bag-filter plant on a 46,5 MV.A ferrosilicon furnace. The company has spent considerable effort and money over two decades in trying to combat dust emission, but eventual success had to await technological development.

The upswing in the price of gold in 1979 prompted renewed interest in the Mercur gold property by Getty Oil Company, owner and operator, and Gold Standard Inc. of Salt Lake City, Utah, currently retaining a 15% net profits interest. Extensive geological exploration work resumed to delineate the ore reserves, and metallurgical test work was initiated under the direction of A.H. Ross & Associates. This led to the development of an aqueous pressure oxidation process suitable for treatment of the refractory ores. Subsequent geostatistical studies revealed that the distribution of high refractory ore was less than previously estimated, and thus a higher return on investment could be realized if a direct carbon-in-leach process were used despite a sacrifice in overall recovery. This paper reviews the geological and metallurgical studies that led to this final process selection.

Over the past 12 years, Exxon Coal U.S.A., Inc. has shipped over 150 million tons of coal from two mines, Rawhide and Caballo, located in the Gillette, Wyoming, area. These mines are operated by The Carter Mining Company, a division of Exxon Coal. Shipments have moved to more than 25 electric utility plants in the west, midwest, southwest, and south. The customer plants have represented a wide variety of configurations, sizes. design criteria, emission standards, and operations in different parts of the country. We have learned a great deal about the performance of Gillette area coals in utility power plants during this period. This paper covers some of the highlights of Exxon's experience with these coals in customer plants. I will focus specifically on things mining engineers may be able to do to make the product better for the customer's use.

Having had occasion while in Europe during the past summer to visit some of the foreign mints and assay offices connected with the same, I thought a brief description of the general process of coining employed, and such items connected with assaying as were new, might prove interesting to the Institute. The principal foreign mints are: the Royal Mint, London; and the mints in Paris, Brussels, Utrecht, Berlin, Vienna, Copenhagen, St. Petersburg, Stockholm, Madrid, Milan, Rome, and Constantinople. My time only permitted my visiting a few of the principal and largest given in the list, and for a description of the remainder I am indebted to the kindness of Mr. James M. Napier, who in company with the deputy master, and chemist of the Royal Mint, made a complete inspection of all the European Mints in 1870.

Combining these technologies can return benefits both fiscally and technically by reducing costs of ownership in IT infrastructure and increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of both internal and external information delivery.GIS and Internet Mapping technologies have reached a practical stanza in their evolution and will continue to develop as a key business tool in the natural resources sector.

The Boliden Group encompasses Sweden's foremost operations related to the mining and production of copper, lead, zinc, precious metals and metallic by- products. It is also the dominant swedish producer of sulphur-based heavy inorganic chemical products and fertilizers and has an international trading organization covering, in adition to the group's basic products, industrial minerals and oil. Boliden's activities in- clude the marketing of proven Boliden technique and know-how. Boliden Metall - the mining and metallurgical company within the Boliden Group - produces about 13 million mtpy of ores at mines in northern and central Sweden. Boliden has, over the years, become a specialist in processing poly- metallic sulphide ores and its eight concentrators presently serve 15 mines. Boliden has a long history of close cooperation with Swedish and foreign manufacturers in developing new products and processes.

During the mineral survey of the Bob Marshall Wilderness and study areas by the author in 1971, 1973, 1974, and 1976 (Marks, 1978), the area designated Reservoir-North (RARE II No. H1-485) in January, 1979, (U.S. Forest Service, 1979) was examined, along with other lands adjacent to the earlier study areas. However, the 1978 open-file report covered only areas originally designated for study. The present report on Reservoir-North is based on earlier work. No work has been done in the area since 1976. Mineral Appraisal Reservoir-North RARE II area (No. H1-485) is in the Northern Disturbed Belt which has been identified as having high potential for natural gas accumulations and lesser potential for oil accumulations (Mudge, 1978). Oil and gas lease applications in the area, indicate interest by oil companies.

The case history, which is the subject of this paper, involves the expansion of a lime plant in Texas. The major new production unit is to be a 545.45 tonne per day coal fired rotary kiln. Auxiliary facilities include additional quarry haulage equipment, modifications to the crushing plant, a hydrator, storage facilities, and a loading system. The existing plant consists of a high calcium limestone quarry, two coal fired rotary and 10 gas fired shaft kilns, nth crushing, screening, stockpiling, hydrating, storing and loading facilities. The proposed modification would increase quarry volume from 545,000 tonnes per year to 805,000 tonnes per year. The plan also includes the addition of dolomitic lime to the product line which requires the purchase and handling of 186,000 tonnes of screened, washed dolomite yearly. A decision to undertake such an expansion was previously a simple and straight forward process. Such a decision now faces a major and complicating obstacle which can delay the project, raise the expected cost, or prevent it entirely.

The Summitville gold mine, located in southwestern Colorado, received tremendous publicity in the 1980's and 1990's for leaks of cyanide solutions from its heap leach facility. As is typical with cyanide spills, real time, geochemically rigorous assessments of the environmental effects were not performed. Past United States Geological Survey (USGS) research used simple mixing experiments to model the influx of alkaline cyanide heap leach solutions from Summitville into a nearby stream, whose waters were highly acidic due to severe acid-rock drainage (ARD) from the mine. These experiments indicated WAD cyanide rapidly degraded due to formation of Fe-Cu-CN solids and lesser HCN volatilization. The alkaline heap leach solutions also precipitated hydrous iron-and aluminum, oxides and hydroxysulfates (iron and aluminum 'supplied by the acid. rock drainage (ARD]), which then sorbed copper and other heavy metals from the ARD. These results indicate that mixing of cyanide heap leach solutions with ARD may be a cost-effective remedial method at mine sites where treatment of both is required. New experiments are currently in progress to further refine a potential remedial process.

PROPERTY AND PRODUCTION: Around 100 Million Tons of Recoverable Coal are available from the approximate 10,000 acres allocated to the mine. Over 1300 acres of surface land holdings extend well beyond the limits required for plant site, storage tracks, water supply reservoir, settling ponds and waste disposal. COAL: Extensive core drilled testing confirmed the early indicated high quality of the #6 Seam Washability data show less than four percent of the' coal seam required removal to provide a superior product for the available market. PREPARATION PANT DESIGN: The limited needs enabled Preparation Plant Design to meet the requirements without inclusion of novel equipment. The simplified needs afforded ample opportunity for considering increased automation where advantage or economy was antioipated. Plant design included protection of opportunity for pre-drying in advance of air cleaning the fine coal and accommodations for addition of Dense Media separating equipment in event warranted or required by future market changes. Protection is also afforded for addition of Raw Coal Storage accommodations in event warranted. Figure I shows the Preparation Plant Flow Sheet.

The Carlin Trend is a 60 km (38 mi) long northwest alignment of epithermal, sediment-hosted, disseminated gold deposits. Collectively, these orebodies contained more than 620 t (20 million troy ounces) of gold. The Carlin deposit, located near the center of the Trend, has become the "type" deposit of this class. There are, however, significant differences between the individual deposits. Six subdistricts can be distinguished, based upon geographic, structural, lithologic, alteration, mineralization style, and geochemical characteristics. They are, from northwest to southeast, the Bootstrap, Bluestar-Goldstrike, Lynn, Maggie Creek, Rain and Bullion (Railroad) subdistricts. Regional Geologic Setting The Carlin District is located centrally within the Great Basin Geologic Province. Host rocks for the deposits include sedimentary units that range in age from Ordovician to Mississippian, as well as a Jurassic-Cretaceous granodiorite stock. During the Early Paleozoic, the area that is now Nevada lay along the western margin of the North American continent. A westward-thickening wedge of sedimentary units was deposited offshore in a eugeoclinal basin; these vary from continental shelf carbonates toward the east to fine-grained siliceous clastic and cherty units to the west. Tectonic activity associated with the Antler Orogeny in Late Devonian to Early Mississippian time resulted in the eugeoclinal Western Assemblage rocks being thrust as much as 140 km (90 mi) eastward over time-equivalent transitional to miogeoclinal Eastern Assemblage rocks along the Roberts Mountains Thrust fault system. The leading edge of the Roberts Mountains Thrust plate formed the emergent Antler highland from which siliceous clastic sediment, eroded from the overriding eugeoclinal rocks, was shed eastward into the adjacent foreland basin. Erosional products derived from the overthrust plate are termed the Overlap Assemblage.

COMPARED to the situation abroad, the domestic industry continues to lag both as regards the production and consumption of newly mined lead. During 1938 we produced and consumed slightly over 20 per cent of the world output, whereas ten years ago the figure was nearly double this pro- portion. Labor difficulties and absence of demand were chiefly responsible for the general inactivity. In the foreign field, in spite of low metal prices, production and consumption of lead equaled or exceeded all previous records. Practically all the large companies, with the exception of those in Spain, increased operations, though it should be noted that the foreign lead mines have higher-grade ores than domestic mines. In view of the rapid expansion of the foreign industry, it is natural to expect greater progress abroad, particularly in process metallurgy.

The Rio Blanco Oil Shale Company completed a modified in situ oil shale retorting demonstration at its Tract C-a Lease in the Piceance Creek Basin of northwestern Colorado during the spring of 1982. This demonstration was the first MIS project with shafts rather than adits for access to the mining operation, and it involved several potential hazards which required that particular attention be paid to mine ventilation. Methane was first encountered during shaft sinking and ultimately resulted in the mine being classified gassy by MSHA. Secondly, we encountered hydrogen sulfide in association with the ground water, and this proved to be a more persistent problem than did the methane. Thirdly, in order to burn the underground retorts, it was necessary to provide for potential leakage of retort gases and to obtain a modification to the MSHA standard which forbids fires under- ground. This modification had a significant effect on the ultimate ventilation procedures at Tract C-a. An extensive under- ground air monitoring program was included in the ventilation system.

Beside many other damaging effects of acid mine drainage, corrosion of pipe lines and pumps frequently adds much to mine operating costs. Not only is it often necessary to install special and relatively costly acid-resistant materials, but even these may require frequent replacements. It is not unusual for ordinary steel pipe to last only a few days in some highly acid waters, while other common materials, though more resistant, frequently last only a few weeks. In the spring of 1935, local PWA authorities offered to assign a number of persons to various problems under the direction of regular employees of the Bureau of Mines. It was believed that at least some simple tests on as many different kinds of acid-resistant pipes as could readily be obtained might produce interesting and valuable information for the mining industry. This paper describes the tests and some results that have since been noted.

"Flotation process applied for concentration of unoxidized ferruginous quartzites by PJSC Mikhailovsky GOK (MGOK) is based on wet magnetic separation of strong magnetic minerals. However quality of the resulting concentrate (Fe65-66%) is insufficient for production of metallics. Quality upgrade of magnetite concentrate via flotation has been implemented by MGOK to produce premium quality magnetite concentrate.Flotation is a challenging process due to sensitivity to varied amounts of reagents, fine and coarse mineral ratio, particle contact (retention) time and temperature of feed. Tomah’s PA-14 reagent (USA) has proven efficient for application in flotation of MGOK’s magnetite concentrate.Objective of this work is to select and prove applicability of selective agents for flotation upgrade of magnetite iron ore concentrate.Series of flotation tests has been carried out with application of new highly selective collecting agents produced by Akzo Nobel (Sweden), Clariant (Germany) as well as Akzo Nobel’s and Tomah’s cationic collector mix to improve performance efficiency of flotation process. Tomah’s flotation agents and Akzo Nobel’s Lilaflotproved to be the most effective for purposes of concentrate quality upgrade to Fe69.0% via flotation.Testing Method: Following scientific research methods were applied for testwork: system analysis, mathematical statistics, observation, comparison, trial (experiment).To determine key process factors a series of pilot tests was carried out. Most of the testwork was performed by PJSC Mikhailovsky GOK’s Central Process Laboratory.Work Results:-optimized flotation performance modes were defined to ensure production of three types of low-silica concentrate, i.e. containing SiO25%, SiO24% and below SiO23% by weight. Most efficient selective agents applicable for flotation have been defined. Mixture of higher aliphatic amines has proven to intensify selective flotation of quartz. It enables higher yield of chamber product maintaining desired quality of concentrate.Achieved process operation and performance factors have been revaluated.Value for Advancement and Expansion of Mineral Processing:Flotation of concentrate has enabled expansion of PJSC Mikhailovsky GOK’s production capacity, improved production quality, helped to maintain sustainability and competitive advantage of the company."
