This paper briefly reviews the historical development of the Rotary Kiln-Electric Furnace Process, which was first applied commercially to the treatment of qarnieritic ores in New Caledonia in the mid-fifties. It describes various technological improvements introduced, since, in industrial plants or developed in pilot facilities where a wide variety of nickel oxide ores has been treated success- fully over the years. Major categories of ores are characterized. The effect of their physical and chemical properties on their performance in the electric furnace is discussed. The relationships between ore composition, ferronickel grade and slag composition are analyzed and their effect on slag and metal tapping temperatures, nickel recovery, and electrode voltage are discussed.

THE elements silver, cadmium, tin, antimony and tellurium either are found as impurities in commercial coppers or are intentionally added to produce coppers for special uses, When present in small quantities, each of these metals exerts a significant effect on the properties of copper, but despite considerable experience and investigation much remains to be learned about their specific behavior. The presence of extraneous elements, particularly oxygen, complicates the study of individual additions of impurities in the range 0 to 0.05 per cent, and the use of high-purity copper has been found extremely helpful in circumventing these difficulties. It has also been found that individual behavior can be satisfactorily determined from measurements of two commercially important properties, conductivity and softening temperature, according to methods that have been described previously.1,2 Data of this type, obtained in the course of a general investigation of the effects of impurities on the properties of both oxygen-bearing and oxygen-free copper are presented herewith. All samples except those containing cadmium were prepared as 3/8-in. continuously cast oxygen-free rod from pure copper and weighed amounts of a similarly synthesized master alloy. Composition was checked by chemical methods, which in every case verified the calculated analyses. Test wires were cold-drawn one B. and S. number per pass on a string-up machine using four 30-min. 600°C. anneals at 0.3125, 0.257, 0.204 and 0.162 in. and a final cold reduction of 75 per cent to 0.081 in. Some oxygen-bearing samples were produced directly from the 3/8-in. oxygen-free rods by diffusion from a surface scale at 850°C. and drawn to size as listed above, but most of the alloys were remelted in pure graphite and cast through air into a I-in. round mold, The slugs were then hot-rolled to 5/16 in., drawn to 0.162 in., annealed as listed above, and drawn to 0.081 inch. Conductivity wires were annealed for I hr. at 100°C. intervals between 300° and 800°F., using a hydrogen atmosphere for oxygen-free samples and purified nitrogen for the oxygen-bearing type, All samples were quenched from the annealing temperature in 10 per cent H2SO4 and conductivity was measured on a Hoopes bridge that had been checked against a Kelvin bridge. "A sample of Hat Creek coal has been extracted using supercritical aromatic solvents in a laboratory-scale extraction unit. Extract yields in the range 21 to 27 per cent of dry-ash-free coal were obtained.These yields are significantly lower than yields available from high-volatile bituminous coal and some lignites. Thus in a combined extraction/hydrocracking scheme for the production of liquid fuels from Hat Creek coal the char product would exceed that required to supply the energy and hydrogen requirements of the process. Excess char could be used for the production of power or gas for sale.IntroductionThe Supercritical Gas Extraction (SGE) process developed by the U.K. National Coal Board operates in two stages: an extraction stage in which a coal extract is separated from mineral matter and undissolved coal and a subsequent hydrogenation stage.The SGE process is based on the ability of a compressed supercritical fluid to dissolve relatively high molecular weight substrates. It is operated under conditions where a hydrogenrich portion of the coal is selectively extracted in a short residence time extraction stage leaving a hydrogen-deficient char. The process schematic shown in Figure I illustrates that the extract produced is separated from the solvent and passed to a conventional hydroprocessing stage while the char product is utilized in the production of heat, power and hydrogen for the process. An extract yield in the order of 50 per cent dry-ash- free coal represents a ""balanced"" case for such a process in which there is just sufficient char for the provision of these commodities."

The industry of producing and processing boron compounds is called the borax industry because the chief product is borax, the decahydrate of disodium tetraborate. For the same reason, it is common to speak of borax mining. Reference to borate mining also is common, and while appropriate where it emphasizes the diversity of borate minerals that are mined in various countries, it is rather unsatisfactory where used in a general sense, because it seems to exclude the important production of borax from brine at Searles Lake, California, and of boric acid from steam vents in Tuscany, Italy. The terms "boron industry" and "boron mining" might seem more comprehensive, but are little used, and this is fortunate because they would be misleading-the element boron is manufactured only in small amounts for special uses, and it is not found free in nature. In most occurrences, boron is combined with oxygen and is in a borate or borosilicate material. The history of the modem borax industry starts with the introduction into Europe of borax from Tibet in the 13th century, about the time of Marco Polo, if not actually by him. The discovery that borax has unique value as a flux in metal soldering and ceramic glazing must have been made at some unknown time much earlier. As a rule, any mineral that has been used so long that its early history is lost must occur in deposits that are easily recognized and worked, and this is undoubtedly true of borax in Tibet. According to meager accounts,9 the borax occurs there in arid mountain basins as surficial crusts that coat the ground about thermal springs and seeps of mineralized water, and as coarser crystals in the bottom muds of shallow pools and lakes. Much the same essential features of surface exposures and minerals easy to recognize and recover characterize most of the deposits later found and worked elsewhere. The borax industry at the present time is faced with rising demands for its products, and consequently is increasing its productive capacity and appraising its borate resources.18 The areas that contain the known borate deposits are most likely to yield additional production, hence their distribution in the world is of interest, and is summarized later in this chapter. Mineralogy The mineral raw materials used by the borax industry include various borates mined in several countries, borax extracted from brines at Searles Lake in California, and boric acid extracted from the steam of vents in Tuscany in Italy. The hydrated borates[$] of chief commercial importance are listed in Table 1, which also shows their chemical composition. The properties of only the four most important borates are summarized here, but detailed descriptions of the borates and the minerals commonly found with them can be found in mineralogy textbooks.41 Ulexite generally forms clusters of silky fibers rather than large individual crystals. Issues around water û its quality, use, availability and environmental value û can be a major point of tension between mineral projects and local communities. Failure to manage these issues appropriately can jeopardise the obtaining of regulatory approvals for new projects and place at risk the æsocial licence to operateÆ of existing operations. Conversely, there may also be significant opportunities for companies to engage constructively with communities over water issues and to make a positive contribution to the sustainable development of these communities. Using case studies, this paper will explore the various types of social risks and opportunities associated with water and mineral resource development and identify key learnings relating to the management of these issues.

The long term viability of a mining company is dependent on the success of its capital investments. Due to the specialised nature of the design, engineering and construction of large projects the management is often contracted to an outside organisation. This paper is a review of the phases of the relationship between Client and Contractor. A rationale is developed upon which the selection of a Contractor can be made. Subsequently, the key aspects of the Client/Contractor relationship are reviewed with reference to completing the project on time within budget. The aspects discussed include Contractor management systems, qualifications of key personnel, definition of scope of work, industrial relations, project control and Contractor remuneration.

BLAUVELT, Anaconda, Mont.: Mr. Stetefeldt's comparison of the producer-plants at Aspen, Colorado, and Park City, Utah, is of special interest at this time, when the attention of all western metallurgists is so forcibly drawn to the necessity of reducing expenses and losses. The fact that wood was used at Park City before gas was introduced, for firing the Stetefeldt furnace and dryer, offered an excellent opportunity for showing the economies resulting from the adoption of gas in place of wood, as well as a comparison between the two gas-plants. Some time ago Mr. Stetefeldt contributed an article to one of the technical journals, in which the economy obtained by the substitution of gas for wood at this plant was shown quite in detail. I regret not being able to quote from his article at length, but, remember that the total saving effected would pay for the producer-plant in about one month. This is a striking instance of the advantages to be secured by the adoption of the best methods of using fuel in our metallurgical works. In comparing the figures from the Park City and Aspen plants, the difference of over 20 per cent. in the fuel used in the Stetefeldt furnaces, seems remarkable, even considering the larger amount of sulphur in the Aspen ore, and the greater rapidity with which it was roasted. It would be interesting to have Mr. Stetefeldt's, opinion as to the cause of so great a difference. The inferior economy of the revolving dryers at Park City might be overcome by lengthening them, or so arranging a second one above

Since 1990, the entire Romanian mining industry has suffered a major restructuring, i.e. technical and economic. The large majority of the remaining active mines are these with a chance for economic comeback. This is also the case for the mines that belong to MINVEST Deva Company; most of the mines are closed, and are waiting to be reclaimed. The authors present the closing procedures of the former copper mining perimeters managed by MINVEST. It is well known that pollutants of concern for the environment must be monitored to obtain reliable information on the quality of ambient conditions and to minimize their impact on the environment. Consequently, the monitoring problems during the closing procedures will be presented.

THE ferroalloying elements are connecting links between the steel industry and the nonferrous metal industries. Although ferroalloys are distinctly nonferrous themselves, they serve the steel industry either in the manufacturing process or in modifying the product-in some cases so that it may compete in the markets with nonferrous metals. Of the 92 elements generally accepted by chemists as constituting the primary building blocks of matter, all but the very rarest have been investigated with a view to employing them in steel manufacture. The surprising thing is that so few have been found commercially acceptable. Despite the relatively small number of elements involved, the employ-ment of alloys in steelmaking is one of the most complicated and probably one of the least well understood of modern industrial enterprises. A great deal has been written regarding the action of individual elements and a profuse and somewhat acrimonious literature covers pretty much the whole field of ferroalloy ore supplies. In the middle ground between the miner and the steelmaker developments are less carefully watched by most observers, and except for an occasional description of the technique of some conversion process or the tariff hearings in Congress, very little is said about them. The purpose of the present paper is to describe in relatively nontechnical terms this highly complex industry and to study its relations to our national progress.

A STUDY of electrical conductance in molten Cu-Fe sulfide mattes' has shown that pure molten Cu,S behaves like a semi-conductor in that it is an electronic conductor and its specific conductance, of the order of 100 ohm-' cm-', increases with increase in temperature. On the other hand, pure molten FeS, another electronic conductor, behaves like a metallic conductor in that its specific conductance, about 1500 ohm-' cm-', decreases with increase in temperature. Molten solutions of Cu,S and FeS follow a roughly additive rule of mixtures with respect to both specific conductance and temperature coefficient. The behavior of molten Cu,S may be understood, by analogy to the situation in solids, in terms of semiconductor theory.' It is thought that, although the melt consists of cuprous and sulfide ions, the bond between these atoms has a certain degree of cova-lency. According to the simplest concept the electrons in the partially covalent bonds are thermally promoted to a conduction band. In another concept, small amounts of impurities (undetermined) provide donor or acceptor levels in the forbidden zone between the valence and conduction bands and thus facilitate semi-conduction in the usual way. However, the metallic behavior of molten FeS is difficult to explain, because one might expect from similar reasoning that it too should act like a semi-conductor. It was suggested that the apparent metallic behavior of molten FeS might be explained by a large negative temperature coefficient of density. Thus if molar conductance instead of specific conductance were plotted versus temperature, the slope might prove to be positive, indicating semi-conduction instead of apparent metallic conduction. Accordingly, density measurements were made in order to answer this question in regard to molten FeS and also to provide data for conversion of specific conductance to molar conductance for molten Cu,S and a molten 50-50 wt pct Cu-Fe sulfide matte. Experimental Diagrams of the apparatus are given in Figs. 1 and 2. Recycling of solid wastes, a common practice nowadays, requires the separation of the different materials in order to increase the products added value. The separation of one plastic from mixtures of different types of plastics is not easy due to their similar physical properties, but different techniques are available, from automatic sorting systems based on optical sensors to techniques adapted from mineral processing, namely gravity, froth flotation and electrostatic processes. In the last decade, many researchers have addressed the separation?s problem of different polymers, like Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) and Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), two polymers commonly used in packaging which have similar density. One proposed technique is the classical froth flotation performed in agitated cells. Froth flotation is a versatile and relatively cheap process widely used in mineral separation. It is based on the different behaviour of particles in the presence of an inter-phase air-water, which depends on the materials surfaces properties. Froth flotation can be affected by some variables such as impeller speed and air flow rate. Agitated cells, when used with low density materials, like plastics, can produce overstated turbulence that prevents the adhesion and collection of particles in the froths. In this case, separation is favoured by column flotation smoother hydrodynamics. This paper proposes the separation of PET from PVC by column flotation. The experimental work was carried out in a column of 9cm diameter and 1m high. The effects of some operating conditions, such as depressor and frother concentration, air flow rate and feed grain size on products grade and recovery were evaluated and the best flotation conditions for the separation of these plastics were established.

AN explosive is a solid or liquid substance which, when fired by some means, changes into a gaseous product occupying a volume very much greater than its original volume. The great speed at which this change takes place causes the explosive to exert a sudden blow on adjacent material. It is this action which is effective in blasting operations when the explosive, confined in a shot-hole, is fired. All explosives are similar in one respect, in that the change into the gaseous state is accompanied by the production of hot gases or flame. This results from the rapid combustion of the solid or liquid ingredients. Ex-plosives differ greatly, however, in the speed at which the reaction takes place. Black blasting powder, for instance, reacts comparatively slowly, hence the flame persists for an appreciable length of time. High explosives, on the other hand, react much more quickly; consequently, the flame is of much shorter duration. In 'closed-light' or 'gaseous' coal mines, the use of ordinary explosives is generally prohibited, due to their inherent ability to ignite gas or coal-dust by reason of the flame which they produce when fired. For instance, black blasting powder, which produces a flame of long duration, is not ordinarily considered safe to use in such mines; neither are ordinary dynamites, as their flames, while shorter than that of black blasting powder are, nevertheless, of sufficient temperature and duration to cause ignition of fire-damp or coal-dust. For this reason, specially formulated high explosives, called 'permitted' explosives, should invariably be used in such mines.

HermesTM metal magnetic liner (MML) has been invented and manufactured by China Metallurgy and Mining General Co. (CMMC). This paper describes its mechanism, structure, magnetic field distribution, application, economic benefit and safety performance. The 10 years? service life in Benxi Steel?s Waitoushan Mine, along with 6 years? technological analysis on its application in 5500mm×8800mm (diameter × length) ball mill in Anshan Steel?s Diaojuntai mineral processing plant, has proved its advantages such as super reliability, long service life, light weight, thin thickness, low noise and short payback period. It has also demonstrated its positive effects on the grinding process such as high productivity, energy-effective performance and low consumption of grinding media. It reduces labour intensity and improves working conditions, due to its easy installation, free maintenance and the fact that it doesn?t require fastening bolts or cause slurry leakage. It is de-signed scientifically in accordance with the varieties of processing lines, mill specification, ore type and grinding media, and has been applied in different grinding processes for magnetite, hematite, gold ores, nonferrous ores and other materials. HermesTM MML has three types of products: General, Composite and Heavy-duty. They are designed to meet the requirements from customers in China and abroad. So far, more than 400 sets of MML have been applied in ball mills with diameter rang-ing from 1500mm to 5500mm. It has become highly popular in American market recently due to its safe and effective performance.
