Computer data processing and ore reserve evaluation techniques, mainly based on geostatistical methodologies, have been developed at Agip Mining Division with the assistance of the Department of Mining Engineering of the University of Rome. A number of computer programs are available when facing problems such as optimization of sampling patterns, minable reserve estimation, grade control of output, and so on. In the present paper, the aims and the criteria followed in developing these programs are discussed. Some recent examples of application are also cited.

Foundry sands used to make molds and cores have been very important to foundrymen since metal casting began hundreds of years ago. They are now used in two basic ways, either in an uncured green state, grain-bonded with clay, or in a set cured state achieved with sand that, mixed with resins or oils, is cured by baking or by chemical reaction. The term sand, as generally used in foundry applications, may best be defined as material composed of granular particles of mineral matter, ranging in size from 0.5 to 2 mm in diameter. The particulate nature of the material may be the result of natural disaggregation or result from crushing and screening of rock or ceramic materials; crushed and screened products are sometimes referred to as "manufactured sand." Based on their origin, the raw materials for foundry sands will vary in grain shape, grain composition, relative surface, grain size, and grain distribution patterns. These properties, in addition to their chemical analyses, sintering point and expansion characteristics play an important part in the choice of sands used as the base molding or core aggregate in metal casting. Sands with different origins may be blended to produce specific compositions and grain size distributions. Early raw material requirements based on silica sand were simple, but as sand/core/mold technology became more sophisticated and binder technology continued to be developed, the physical properties of foundry sands became more critical. Silica sand is composed of quartz, along with, in most cases, small amounts of feldspar, mica, clay, and other common minerals. Although silica sand is still by far the most widely used base material in production of molds and cores used in metal casting, other natural mineral sands have their own unique characteristics and fill an important niche in special applications. As a result, the term sand, as applied to raw materials used in metal casting, has been logically extended to include granular materials composed of a group of minerals other than quartz. With increased use in advanced foundry technology, natural sands composed predominantly of zircon, chromite, staurolite, or aluminum silicate minerals and of granularized chromite or olivine, have become more than just alternate materials and are now commonly classified as sands when the grains are sand-sized. Foundry sand may therefore be considered under two categories: silica sands and non-silica sands.

Steels containing 0.4 and 0.8 pet C have been transformed isothermally at pressures up to 34 kbuv. Decomposilion mechanisms are so intimately related to phase equilibvia that, as the equilibria shift under high pressure, the microstruclures of the decomposition producls change, maintaining at pressure the same correspondence between a given phase equilibrium and a given microstructure as a1 1 atm. A bainitic unicvo-structure occurs in these steels at high pressure that IS observed only at 1 aim abole 1.4 pct C. This strrrcl111,e 1s ruliorzalized in terms of the effect of pressure on the transformation to lower bainite. The pressuve depetlderlce of the kinetics of pearlile formation is descrihed by an absolute rule theory amalysis. The activation volume for the transformation is 7 cu cm per mlole, which is indicative of a phase-interface transformation-rate cotntrol mechanism. This fortmulation, when expressed in terms of known solule effects on the energelics of tvansformation, gives promise of explaining the effects of alloying elemenls on hnrden-abilily, particularly that of 'coball. KINETIC processes in solids are functions of the primary thermodynamic variables of state: composition, temperature, and pressure. Until the development of high-pressure techniques' that permitted the generation of sustained high pressure at high temperatures, metallurgical studies of such reactions were largely limited to isobaric conditions at atmospheric pressure. The data so obtained, and theoretical deductions based on these data, were necessarily incomplete For the particular case of austenite decomposition, a knowledge of the phenomenology of the reaction in terms of all the state variables should lead to a clarification of the process. This deeper understanding should facilitate a decision between conflicting theories that have been proposed to rationalize these phe- nomena. An analysis, derived from an understanding of the transformation mechanisms, may aid in the optimization of alloy steel development. The first studies of the effect of pressure on transformations in steel were made by Kulin et al. in 1952.' In a study of the influence of applied stress on mar-tensite formation in a 30 pct Ni steel, they found that the martensite start (M,) was depressed 8°C per kbar* by hydrostatic pressure. Jellinghaus and Friedewold3 were apparently the first to investigate the effect of pressure on isothermal transformations above the Ms. They found that the bainite transformation rate in a 1.2 pct C, 3.8 pct Mn steel was reduced by a factor of 3 by a hydrostatic pressure of 4 kbar. In both of these investigations,2,3 the M, of the steels studied was below room temperature. Austenitizing and quenching were done at atmospheric pressure, followed by the decomposition of the metastable austenite under pressure. The maximum temperature at pressure in the bainite study3 was 350°C. Until the advent of the present high-pressure devices, it was not possible to conduct isobaric high-pressure heat treatments from austenitizing through isothermal decomposition and quenching. The exploitation of high pressure as a variable in metallurgical studies was greatly advanced by the apparatus and techniques developed by Hall4 and co-workers. Utilizing these techniques, Radcliffe et a1.5 and Hilliard6 etermined the pressure dependence of phase equilibria in the Fe-C system. Hilliard and cahn7 examined the pearlite transformation rate in an AISI 1080 steel and also in a high-purity 0.92 C Fe-C alloy at 1 atm and at 34 kbar and found a 700-fold reduction in rate at pressure in the 1080 steel but only a fivefold reduction in the high-purity alloy. In agreement with the shift of phase equilibria under pressure, the microstructures were hypereutectoid at 34 kbar pressure, whereas they are eutectoid at 1 atm. "Over the last 50 years disposal of uranium mill tailings has evolved from dumping untreated tailings into the nearest depression to depositing chemically-stabilized tailings into highly engineered management facilities. This paper describes the evolution of disposal methods and the criteria which have determined the development path followed. Remediation techniques to bring older and now unacceptable tailings deposits into satisfactory compliance with today's· regulations are reviewed.With the closure of the uranium mines in Elliot Lake, Ontario, considerable effort is being made on decommissioning the tailings areas by developing long term maintenance of water covers. The innovative methods being used to develop these water covers are detailed. Methods now under development in Saskatchewan for subaqueous deposition of high density or paste tailings for permanent disposal in mined out open pits are described.SummaryThe technology for uranium mill tailings disposal in Canada has evolved considerably over the past 51 years. This evolution has been driven by an improving understanding of how best to safely and permanently store tailings, in conjunction with stricter environmental protection regulations. Old sites are being decommissioned in situ, but may require long term care and maintenance. The use of water covers is an important technique in eastern Canada to prevent intrusion, radon evolution and, for the Elliot Lake tailings, acid generation. The major drawback of water covers in any above ground disposal method is the requirement that a long term maintenance and monitoring plan be put into effect for each site.New higher grade mines in Saskatchewan will increasingly use disposal in mined-out pits using the pervious surround method and/or paste tailings technology as a method to permanently dispose of these wastes and to permit “walkaway” after a few years of monitoring."

Electrostatic separation is the selective sorting of solid species by means of utilizing forces acting on charged or polarized bodies in an electric field. Separation is effected by adjusting the electric and coacting forces, such as gravity or centrifugal force, and the time forces act on the particles, such that different species will have different trajectories at some predetermined time. Separations made in air are called electrostatic separation even though there is always some flow of current. Separations made using corona discharge devices are often called high tension separations. Separations made in liquids are termed separation by dielectrophesis if motion is due to polariza¬tion effects in nonuniform electric fields and termed electrophoresis if motion is due to free charge on species in an electric field. There are no industrial applications of mineral concentration by electropho¬resis or dielectrophesis; thus this section is limited to concentration in air. Typical Industrial Separations Typical applications of electrostatic separation are: 1) Beneficiation of ores, such as the concentration of the minerals ilmenite, rutile, zircon, apatite, asbestos, hematite, and many others. 2) Purification of foods, such as the removal of trash and rodent excrement from cereal seeds. 3) Sorting of reusable wastes, such as separating insulation from copper wire shreds. 4) Electrostatic sizing, namely, the sorting of solid particles ac¬cording to their size or shape. Table I is a partial list of industrial separations made by electrostat¬ics. The various types of electrostatic separators and the feasibility of commercial separations are most easily understood by reviewing pertinent basic electrostatic theory and the selected electrical proper¬ties of solids prior to describing the equipment and application. This is the sequence of presentation used in this section. Electrostatic Units One of the greatest sources of confusion and error is due to the multitude of units used in electrostatic literature. The system of units used throughout this section is the rationalized MKS, often called Systéme International (SI) units. In this system the mechanical units are the meter, kilogram, and the serond. The unit of force is the newton (N). This system is completed by the addition of the unit of charge, the coulomb (C). The fourth dimension, viz., the coulomb. could also be considered to be the ampere, since one ampere is the flow in a conductor of one coulomb per second. This paper deals with an analysis of the conditions leading to the formation of blowholes and surface and subsurface defects in cast low-carbon steels. The theoretical analysis of the problem is based on the concept of the occurrence of deoxidation reactions during cooling of liquid steel and during its solidification. The reaction equilibrium data are given on deoxidation of steel by carbon, silicon, and manganese. The details of the calculations are given on the simultaneous deoxidation of steel by silico-manganese additions to produce a desired level of deoxidation at certain residual concentrations. Based on an idealized model, an attempt is made to calculate the enrichment of solutes in the solidifying liquid entrapped within the interdendritic cells which are known to be less than 200 µ thick. Formulae are derived for the calculation of the change in the residual oxygen content of the enriched liquid steel, controlled by Si/Mn deoxidation. It is shown that for every particular initial silicon, manganese, and oxygen concentration in steel (as residuals in liquid solution at the beginning of solidification) there is a particular carbon concentration below which carbon monoxide, leading to blowholes or pinholes, is not expected to form. There are a number of independent variables which have a decisive influence on the formation of blowholes. For example, it is shown that the position of the curve depicting the critical relation between initial silicon and carbon content for suppression of the evolution of carbon monoxide) can be shifted to lower silicon or higher carbon levels by: increasing manganese content; decreasing oxygen, hydrogen, or nitrogen content; or increasing external pressure on the solidifying mass. FOR the production of sound castings it is essential to prevent the formation of interdendritic worm-holes or pinholes brought about by gas evolution during solidification. Another major problem encountered in solidification of ingots is the formation of surface defects. These problems are thought to be closely associated with the deoxidation reaction occurring in liquid steel during cooling and subsequent solidification. As the liquid becomes richer in impurities during dendritic solidification of steel, a series of reactions may occur in the liquid phase trapped within the branches of growing dendrite platelets. Because of the strong interaction between dissolved oxygen and impurities in liquid steel, the reactions most likely to occur are of the deoxidation type. PRIOR to World War II, approximately 500 tons per day, or one-third of the ore being shipped to the Golden Cycle Mill at Colorado Springs, Colo., from the Cripple Creek district, was being treated in the flotation plant. The remaining 1000 tons, along with the flotation concentrates, received the usual roasting and cyanide treatment. Since it was not possible to make a disposable tailing on the general run of Cripple Creek ores by flotation alone, it was necessary to treat the flotation tailings by cyanidation, along with the roasted ore. By this treatment, an overall economical tailing could be made. The gold ores from the Cripple Creek district are the highly siliceous sulphotellurides with approximately 3 pct total sulphides. In the lower grade ores most of the values are found in very finely disseminated pyrite. In some of the higher grade ores the tellurides, calaverite and sylvanite, can be recognized. After several years of floating Cripple Creek gold ores, having a very low mineral content, it was concluded that this type of ore required a Type of flotation machine that would give a rather violent aeration and agitation. This action produced a fairly deep froth column which contained not only the free mineral, principally pyrite, but also most of the middling product; this was most essential in producing a low grade tailing by flotation alone that could be discarded to waste. After investigating most of the current types of flotation machines, it was decided to convert to the Fagergren type. During World War II, the flotation plant was modified to handle lead and zinc ores. The treatment of these ores was carried on until April 1946. At this time the flotation plant was again reconverted to handle the Cripple Creek ores. SELECTING ORES FOR FLOTATION During the period of reconversion a considerable amount of experimental work was carried on in the laboratory to determine if a disposable tailing could be made by flotation alone, on certain selected ores from the Cripple Creek district. It was found that most of the dump ores and a few of the low grade mine ores could be treated by this method with very satisfactory results. After the preliminary test work in the laboratory, it was decided to carry on further work on a plant-size scale to see if similar results could be obtained. On April 15, 1946, a part of the plant was put into operation as a pilot plant. The various ores that had been found suitable for treatment by this method in the laboratory, were run through the pilot plant at the rate of 200 tons per day for a period of several months. Results were so encouraging that it was decided to put the plant in full-scale operation. Since that time plant capacity has been increased from 500 to 1000 tons per day. The 1997 Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC) was held at the Mirage Hotel, Las Vegas, NV. The RETC is a biennial event jointly sponsored by SME and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). Conference attendance was 573 members, nonmembers and students, an increase of seven attendees from the 1995 conference in San Francisco, CA. Exhibitors occupied 51 booths at the Las Vegas RETC. The 1997 conference encompassed 58 presentations in 15 sessions. Participants were given details on achievements and advances that have resulted in new design solutions, alternative work practices and increased productivity within the industry. The page at the end of this article tells how to get your copy of the RETC proceedings, either hardbound or on CD-ROM. Or, if you wish, for the first time a CD-ROM is available with the complete RETC proceedings from 1972 to 1997. This two-disk, archival volume has key-word search capability, is in portable file format and is compatible with PC and Macintosh platforms. The Ranger uranium mine has operated in the Kakadu region of the Northern Territory since 1979. The mine's water management system was designed to cater for the wet-dry monsoonal climate and to satisfy the recommendations of the Ranger Uranium Environmental Inquiry - Second Report, 1977 (The Fox Report) with respect to environment protection. The Fox Report advised that the aquatic ecosystem of the region must be protected and that the mine should collect all runoff from disturbed areas. Furthermore, the mine was to operate as a no-release system until release standards, based on the experience of several years of operation and on the results obtained from monitoring and scientific investigations, could be established. Monitoring and research data have now been collected for a decade. it is evident that lower-than-expected concentrations of chemical constituents are present in the runoff waters which are retained on site. Standards have been established for the release of these waters to the streams when in flood during the wet season. Mine water quality data and release standards are presented. It can be confidently concluded that controlled release will not cause detriment to the aquatic ecosystems of the Kakadu region. The Ranger operation has demonstrated that environmentally responsible management of mine waters is feasible for future mining ventures in the Kakadu region.

RICO, in the southwestern corner of Colorado, is one of the productive mining centers of the San Juan region, so-called because its waters drain into the river of that name, which is tributary to the Colorado. The San Juan region includes the counties of Ouray, Hinsdale, San Miguel, Dolores, San Juan and Montezuma. It is traversed by a network of picturesque mountain ranges on whose lofty summits there rests perpetual snow. The region is peculiarly rugged, and, in the early days of its development, tested to the full the hardihood of the adventurers who first explored its can ions 111 search for gold and silver. IN a paper by Mr. Frank Firmstone, published in vol. iv, of the Transactions of the Institute, on "Comparison of Results from Open-topped and Closed-topped Furnaces," the regularity of the average grade of pig iron produced by the furnace under different conditions is expressed by means of a curve or diagram. The object of this note is to show that the graphic method, or that of representing variations by plotted curves or diagrams, is capable of a much more extended application to blast-furnace records, making a valuable auxiliary to the "furnace .book," and that by it the practical metallurgist may obtain at a glance information concerning the variations of the furnace during long periods, which could be found in the furnace book only after a tedious search. Plate XII is a graphic record of an anthracite blast furnace for one month. The table on page 554 gives the figures obtained from the furnace book, together with a record of temperature of the atmosphere, barometric pressure, and moisture in the air, which was obtained from a meteorological observatory not far from the furnace. In the records of a furnace, two of the variable qualities are final results, viz., the quantity of pig iron produced, and its grade; all the other variables are antecedent causes which produce the final results. Of these variable causes which contribute to the quantity of product and its grade, some are partially under the control of the furnace manager, others depend upon the state of the atmosphere, and still others are accidental. Of the first class are the character of the materials charged, and their relative proportions, their mechanical conditions, as wet or dry, large or small pieces, etc., the revolutions of the engine, the heat and pressure of blast, and the distribution of the charge. Of the second class are the number of pounds of air blown into the furnace for each stroke of the engine, the amount of moisture in the air, and the condition of the chimney draughts. These vary largely with the season of the year. Of the third. class is the leaking of a tuyere or a temporary stoppage. To keep a record of this kind for a whole year, it is only necessary to procure a sheet of common profile or cross section paper, about 38 inches long and 8 or 10 inches wide, with cross lines ruled about 0.1 of an inch apart. A green ball of iron ore faces many perils from the time it is formed until it finally emerges from the pelletizing furnace as a hardened pellet. For instance, if the rate of heat transfer into a ball is sufficient to produce vapor from either the free or combined water more rapidly than it can escape at a tolerable pressure, the ball may split, spall, or even explode, a failure commonly known as decrepitation. To avoid such failures, one must either limit the rate of heat transfer during the drying and preheating stages, at the expense of production rates, or improve the decrepitation resistance of the green balls. The latter remedy may often be accomplished through changes in ore preparation, balling procedures, or the judicious use of binders or other additives. INTRODUCTION Pelletization has become established as an especially desirable method for the agglomeration of fine taconite concentrates and it promises to be equally satisfactory for improving the physical structures of certain natural ores. A high-quality pelletized iron ore consists of uniformly sized spheres, usually about 1/2-in. diam, which are strong enough to resist abrasion and breakage during handling and which reduce well without disintegration in the blast furnace. The unfired agglomerates, "green balls", are subject to several destructive effects that must be avoided or minimized if a high-quality product is to be obtained by pelletization. Among these are abrasion and impact deformation or breakage during handling of the wet green balls, deformation and breakage by compressive forces in the bed of ore in the pel-letizing furnace, decrepitation during drying and preheating, wind erosion, and radial cracking at firing temperatures. Moisture condensation from the warm saturated gases downstream from the drying zone on wet, cool balls may cause bed collapse if it becomes excessive. Decrepitation is defined as the sudden disintegration of green balls, usually with an audible pop, that occurs when they are heated too rapidly during the drying or preheating stages of the pelletization process. The extent of ball disintegration may vary from merely splitting off a small fragment to almost total disintegration into the original ore particles making up the ball. Such ball destruction results in a decreased yield of pellets, and the fragments, which also tend to interfere by obstructing the gas flow through the bed, must eventually be screened from the fired product and recycled. The closely related type of ball failure that sometimes occurs during the high temperature firing stage, resulting in radial cracks without fragmentation, was not considered to be decrepitation for the purpose of this investigation. Failure by decrepitation is not usually a serious problem in the pelletization of taconite concentrates. The problem is significant, however, in the pelletization of some natural ores, especially those containing hydrous iron oxides. In some instances, economicd production rates cannot be maintained if the drying and preheating rates are slowed down enough to avoid decrepitation. OBJECTIVES This investigation was undertaken to: (1) Develop a practical laboratory means for quantitatively measuring the tendency for green balls to decrepitate in iron ore pelletizing furnaces, and (2) Investigate the causes and cures of ball decrepitation. MATERIALS Two iron ores were used in the work reported here: a taconite concentrate at 90% minus 325 mesh, containing 65.0% Fe, 8.4% SiO2, and no loss-on-ignition; and a crude oxidized ore at 54% minus 325 mesh, containing 59.1% Fe, 3.6% SiO2, 1.1% A12O3, and 9.5% loss-on-ignition. Black: Bodies.-In the ordinary conception, a black object is an opaque object that reflects but little of the light that is incident on it. This means naturally that such an object is a good absorber of luminous radiation. The black body; which is so closely connected with high-temperature measurements, represents the limit in blackness of all black objects. It is a body that not only absorbs all visible radiations but also all other radiations in the infra-red and the ultra-violet regions of the spectrum which are incident on it. No substance is known that is completely black; platinum black, one of the nearest if not the nearest representative of the ideal, reflects 1 per cent. or so of ordinary visible radiation. The closest approach to the ideal is a small opening in the wall of a relatively large opaque cavity. Any radiation incident on this black body will be almost completely absorbed if the relative dimensions are properly chosen no matter what the material may be. The great difference between the blackness of such a cavity and of lampblack, for instance, will be apparent to one who makes the simple test. Non-black Bodies.-The field of non-black bodies covers all real bodies. Their characteristics are extremely varied. So far as absorption of radiation-is concerned, these bodies range practically from the almost completely black, platinum-black, and lampblack, which absorb all but a fractional part of 1 per cent. or so of the incident radiation, by an infinite variety of steps to freshly polished silver, which ordinarily absorbs only a few per cent. The exact percentage absorbed depends not only on the nature of the incident radiation, but also on the temperature of the body, the condition of its surface, the angle of incidence, the nature of the surrounding medium, and on certain other less important conditions. As consequences of these varied characteristics, we have not only the differences of color of ordinary objects, but also the changes of color that any one object undergoes on heating or when lighted front various directions. This complexity of the phenomena, in a way, is responsible for the meagerness of knowledge, regarding materials at elevated temperatures. Measurement of High Temperatures.-Excepting in cases where the thermocouple or the gas thermometer are applicable, in which case the temperatures obtained are true temperatures regardless of-the material" studied, high, temperatures are almost always, if not always, determined from measurements of radiation. In fact, determinations of temperature from this latter point of view are often so much more convenient than the thermocouple and especially the gas-thermometer determinations that, in the region where all of these types of measurements may be made, the radiation measurements are often preferred. This is true even though the temperatures usually thus directly determined are not the actual temperatures, a consequence of the sources of the radiation being non-black bodies; in other words, a consequence of being concerned with iron, or glass, or tungsten instead of small openings leading to relatively large-cavities uniformly heated. Coordination of Experimental Results.-In order that data on iron, glass, tungsten, or other non-black bodies obtained in one laboratory, may be, correlated with similar data obtained elsewhere, temperatures must be expressed on a common scale. The true temperature scale is the natural scale for this purpose it is ordinarily the scale to which all other temperatures can be most directly reduced. Traditionally within the mining industry, the main functional process flow for resource and reserve evaluation proceeds from geologists who build the geological model, to resource estimation geologists (modelers) who estimate the grades, to mining engineers who develop the mine design and schedule. The interface between these three disciplines is not always seamless. Assumptions made during one stage of the process are not always communicated down the line, even though most mining companies have procedures in place to encourage communication across the various disciplines. These procedures do not always achieve their aim due to a variety of reasons including time constraints, appropriate people not being available, or a lack of understanding of what other disciplines require, and the handover process can degenerate into one of sending computer files on to the next discipline in the process flow. This paper focuses on the interface between the resource estimation and mine engineering disciplines, and outlines some of the common assumptions made when generating a resource model and the risks that engineers may be taking when elevating cutoff grades, optimizing schedules or generating forecasts. The case studies presented focus on openpit gold deposits, but the concepts should be applicable throughout the industry. A summary of key questions and recommendations is provided.

Important contributions can be made to conservation of natural resources by recovering mineral values from primary and secondary metallurgical slimes and flue dusts. This applies particularly to ultrafine mineral particles that escape recovery by conventional mineral dressing. In the interest of economy and conservation the Bureau of Mines is investigating fundamental properties of ultrafine mineral values in slimes as a means of developing new or improved methods of mineral recovery. The work described in this progress report was carried on in the Bureau's laboratories at Rolla, Mo., from 1951 to 1953. The mineral material used as a subject for study was tin-ore slimes. DESCRIPTION OF TIN SLIMES The tin slimes consist principally of quartz, with appreciable quantities of tourmaline and sericite mica and small amounts of cassiterite, pyrite, hematite, and arsenopyrite. The tin content is approximately 0.5 percent.

"Low and inconsistent recoveries of aluminum in the production of aluminum-killed steels triggered an extensive research program on the aluminum dissolution kinetics at McGill University. This research program led to the understanding of the melting kinetics and the hydrodynamics of making additions to liquid steel. It showed the necessity of gradually releasing liquid aluminum at the bottom of the ladle to increase aluminum recoveries.This knowledge was verified in practice at Sidbec-Dosco, where a prototype aluminum wire injector was developed and installed for the first time in Canada. The industrial application showed the validity of the theoretical and experimental results and provided further data for the mathematical modelling of the process.The development of the theoretical understanding, the industrial results, and the interaction between university and industry are presented.IntroductionAluminum is an extremely effective deoxidizer of molten steel; nevertheless, an efficient method of adding it to steel has eluded steelmakers for many years. It is well known that the recovery of aluminum used in the production of aluminum killed steel is both low and eratic, especially when the aluminum is added in the form of bars or lumps from chutes into filling ladles, a practice still common in many of today's steelmaking operations.As the density of aluminum is only about 40010 that of molten steel, it is conceivable that loose bars of aluminum simply ""thrown"" into a filling ladle will resurface before any appreciable dissolution of the aluminum has occurred, particularly if the depth of penetration of the additions is small. Before one can conclude that this is indeed the case, it is necessary to know the melting kinetics of an aluminum addition. Back in 1972, this information was not available; hence an extensive research program which focused on melting kinetics was initiated at McGill University."

"ANSTO Minerals and Northern Minerals have been working together since 2012 on the process flowsheet development for the Browns Range project for the recovery of the heavy rare earths (Dy – Lu, + Y). Initial efforts were directed toward defining the most efficient and direct flowsheet for the Preliminary Feasibility Study (PFS), issued in June 2014, then towards the Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS), issued in February 2015. These goals were achieved by undertaking comprehensive laboratory and continuous piloting programs. Further improvements to the flowsheet following the DFS have been made. This publication provides an overview of the evolution of the process flowsheet based on these laboratory and piloting programs from the PFS through the DFS and beyond.INTRODUCTIONNorthern Minerals Ltd (Northern) has been working on developing their flagship project at Browns Range for the recovery of the heavy rare earth elements (HRE, Dy – Lu, + Y). The project is located in the north of Western Australia as shown in Figure 1. The Total Mineral Resource at the project is currently estimated at 8.98 Mt @ 0.63% total rare earth oxides (TREO) comprising 56,663 t of contained TREO using a cut-off grade of 0.15% TREO. Of the Total Mineral Resource, 58% is classified as Indicated Resource, with the remainder in the Inferred Resource category.The deposit is characterised by breccia-hosted, hydrothermal, HRE-rich, xenotime mineralisation. The main gangue mineral associated with the xenotime is quartz. The distribution of rare earths (RE) observed for the xenotime mineralisation at Browns Range is presented in Figure 2. Extensive test work has shown that the xenotime can be readily beneficiated to between 20 – 40% rare earth oxide (REO) using a process consisting of crushing and grinding, followed by magnetic separation and flotation steps. Continuous piloting of this process was conducted on ~80 t of trench-sourced ore in late 2013 at SGS Perth, to produce ~2 t of ~20% REO mineral concentrate (MC) for hydrometallurgical testing. The composition of the MC produced during piloting is presented in Table 1."

The South Island Line (East) will be a medium-capacity railway covering approximately 7 km from Admiralty Station to South Horizons Station on the south side of Aberdeen Harbour in Hong Kong, with intermediate stations at Ocean Park, Wong Chuk Hang and Lei Tung.South Island Line (East) Contract 904 project is located on the island of Ap Lei Chau at the southern side of Hong Kong island and requires extensive construction works to be completed in close proximity to the existing residential estates of South Horizons and Lei Tung. The project also has areas of significant cultural heritage, including 18th and 19th century temples and historical gravesites. Owing to the site access constraints and location for the project, detailed planning and methodology innovations have been required to ensure the most effective and responsible means of delivering the project works. To excavate the tunnels using drill-and-blast techniques in these restricted locations, the maximum instantaneous charge weight that could be fired while blasting was severely limited. To overcome these restrictions, the project team developed and pioneered the use of ‘deck loading’ in Hong Kong to minimise the impact of blasting operations and has successfully implemented double- and triple-deck blasting operations during the completion of tunnel excavation works.Upon completion of the drill-and-blast excavation, the tunnel lining works were completed using both in situ concrete lining with travelling forms and permanent shotcrete works.CITATION:Curlewis, W, Cuthbert, Z and Hake, D, 2014. In this paper, a computer program that has been developed for determining the capital and operating costs for coal preparation plants is described along with its applications. The logic of the computer program is based upon the results of a survey of existing preparation plants, operators, plant contractors, equipment manufacturers, and consulting firms. This survey provided information on plant performance, order-of-magnitude costs, and costing procedures. Additionally, an extensive cost data file for the major capital equipment in coal preparation plants has been developed. Using the washability data and the computer program outputs, the cleaning costs per million Btu can be calculated. Details about the program and its applications can be found in a report by the authors (Zigmond et al., 1979).
