WHEN this study was started very little information was available, regarding the physical characteristics of West Virginia coals. This was particularly true of friability and of crushing strengths of the coals. Some work had been done on specific gravity studies but the available information applied to only a few coals. In practically all coal-classification systems thus far proposed, the predominating factors of classifications are largely based on the chemical characteristics of the coal. Recently some investigators have pointed out that a classification based on chemical and physical properties of coal might serve to place coals in their proper group better than classification systems based on chemical properties alone. One of the aims of this study was to obtain some data on the physical properties of coal which might help to properly classify West Virginia coals.

This paper describes the application of amine flotation to a specific problem—that of increasing the grade of magnetite concentrates derived from an iron ore requiring extremely fine grinding for mineral liberation. Experiments conducted on an iron ore from Wisconsin had shown that concentrates containing 60 to 62 per cent iron and 12 to 14 per cent silica could be produced by magnetic separation. The residual silica occurred as quartz and hornblende, either entrained or locked with magnetite. Most advantageous utilization of the concentrate, however, necessitated that the silica content be reduced to about 5 per cent, equivalent to an iron content of 67.5 per cent. It had been demonstrated that tabling of the magnetic concentrate removed sufficient quartz and hornblende to yield an acceptable concentrate, but disadvantages inherent in tabling dictated that flotation be investigated as a substitute. The goals set for the flotation investigation were: (I) the production of concentrates of about 68 per cent iron content from the magnetic concentrate; (2) an iron recovery of about 85 per cent of that in the feed to flotation; and (3) minimum reagent cost. Both batch and continuous flotation tests were employed; the former, to establish the procedure and the latter to verify it. Although the data were obtained on a specific ore, and with a commercial application in view, it is believed that they have a bearing on other problems where amine flotation is being used or is anticipated. Samples Two samples, designated "(minus 100-mesh magnetic concentrate" and "minus 150-mesh magnetic concentrate," were used for the batch experimental work. They differed only in the degree to which the crude ore was ground prior to magnetic separation. They were stored moist in steel drums in quantities sufficient for all the experimental work reported. This procedure had the advantage of allowing all tests to be made on common samples, but had the disadvantage that the individual flotation samples, because of the difference in storage time, were subject to various stages of surface alteration. Previous work had indicated that common samples were desirable for the batch studies, and it was decided that if these data appeared sufficiently promising the effect of surface alteration could be checked best by continuous tests. The size distributions and the assays of the samples are given in Table I. The minus 150-mesh magnetic concentrate, on which most of the flotation tests were made, assayed 60.9 per cent iron, 13.3 per cent silica, and 0.016 per cent phosphorus. "Sulfide ore processing is characterized by significant losses of metals, for example, with flotation tailings. Therefore, flotation tailings can present an important source of metals. The treatment of flotation tailings is a technological issue due to low content of valuable metals (e.g. copper and zinc) and high iron content. The goal of the present work was to investigate extraction of base metals and gold from old flotation tailings containing 17% iron, 0.26% copper, 0.22% zinc, and 0.7 g/t gold. Chemical leaching in columns with 0.5 to 10% sulfuric acid solutions and bioleaching in air-lift percolators were used for the extraction of base metals. 1% H2SO4 provided high extraction of base metals and best selectivity. Recovery of copper and zinc reached 35% and 40%. Increasing H2SO4 concentration did not lead to significant increase in base metals extraction, but led to increased iron concentration in the pregnant solutions. The 1% H2SO4 leaching solid residues were used for further experiments. Acid leaching and bioleaching did not result in significant increase in base metals recovery. Leaching of the residue with 10% H2SO4 provided extraction of 4% copper and 20% zinc, and bioleaching for 100 days provided extraction of 16% copper and 12% zinc. The recovery of gold by cyanidation from the flotation tailings, the 1% H2SO4 leaching solid residue and residue of two-step acid leaching were 50, 49, and 65%, respectively. The results suggest that acid leaching can be effective approach for treatment of old flotation tailings.INTRODUCTIONAbout 80% of base metals (copper, nickel, zinc) are produced through pyrometallurgical treatment of sulfide ores. Mining and metallurgical treatments of sulfide ores are presently characterized by significant losses of non-ferrous and precious metals into the various wastes. For example, flotation of sulfidic ores yields formation sulfide flotation tailings. These wastes pose a problem not just because of their sheer volume, but some of them may affect local ecosystems. Nowadays, mining and metallurgical wastes can be considered as technogenical source of base metals."

"Whenever a decision is made to bring a mineral deposit into production, the Owner in actual fact has decided to convert substantial sums of capital into productive capacity with the intenti6n of making a profit from such conversion.Escalating costs of construction, frustrating and costly delays in comp1etion, the increasing tempo of technological change and the increasing size and complexity of mineral processing projects have convinced Owners that the best way of implementing their capital must be sought and utilized. This requirement has stimulated a search for ways and means of applying modern management techniques to the design and construction of mineral processing plants.This search by consulting firms has resulted in the evolution of the concept of project management and the development of planning and con trolling techniques with the result that Owners can seek and obtain better assurance that their project objectives will be fulfilled.This paper will attempt to outline how a mineral processing plant can be brought into production through the implementation of project management techniques.Definition And Objectives Of Project ManagementThe design and construction of mineral processing plants is subject to the restraints of three inter-related parameters -Quality, Cost and Time each of which influences and is influenced by the other two.Project management is a technique where the Owner delegates complete responsibility to a single organization for all phases of a project (design, procurement, construction and commissioning) for the above parameters but retains freedom for major decision making. Normally, the consultant under-takes full responsibility for all phases, but partial project management services can be provided when the Owner so desires.The objective of project management is first to devise and define and then to implement a program in which the relationship between the three parameters of Quality, Cost and Time is optimized, i.e., the desired functional and other requirements are attained (but not exceeded) at the lowest practicable overall cost in the shortest practicable time. The measure of success of a project lies in the degree to which this objective is achieved."

Taking the Long View THE present international situation has serious implications for this nation. The possibility of total war is no more appalling than the threat of making the United States permanently into an armed camp. A period of ten years under such conditions could mean a Communist victory without firing a shot-if the present trend toward statism is allowed to continue. As individual citizens and as members of the mining profession we have the power to oppose the march toward socialism. We must not adopt shortsighted policies dictated by self-interest, but must endeavor to size up the situation as a whole and act according to what will be best in the national interest. The economic picture for the metal mining industry under present emergency conditions is apparently bright. Demand for metals exceeds supply. But there is danger that fluctuating prices will bring Government regulation. Care must be exercised in our pricing policies, or the calamity of Government intervention will be inevitable. President Truman's "loophole" reference to percentage depletion early in the year caused a brief flurry of excitement, but now that the immediate threat is over the industry has lapsed into sommolence on this subject. Special tax privileges accorded the mining industry because of inherent risks should be guarded by a continuing propaganda campaign to educate Congress and the public. If this is not done we may find ourselves losing the necessary tax protection which we now possess by a capricious act of legislation. Stockpiling minerals from abroad certainly lengthens the life of our own mineral resources. The present consumer demand for the base metals indicates foreign sources of supply for stockpiling. However, this is only one facet of the problem. For strategic military reasons it is necessary that the United States have quick sources of all minerals within our national boundaries. Undeveloped mineral deposits do not meet this need so that where it is possible to encourage our own mineral development by stockpile purchases, it should be done. A need exists for an overall controlling agency that would make purchases for the stockpile according to military necessity, current metal market conditions, and so as to strengthen the mining industry. In the course of the history of the United States we have been engulfed in several wars by the necessity of protecting our economic rights abroad trading privileges-and also because of moral obligations. Disregarding the moral side, it is difficult to reconcile fighting wars to protect world freedom of trade when in peacetime we attempt to restrain such trade by tariff barriers. When it comes to accepting subsidies from the Government in one form or another it is difficult to overlook the immediate personal gains and see in the future that where the Government lays out capital it becomes a partner in the business and not a silent one. It is apparent that hope for the traditional American way of life cannot be bought without some self-sacrifice; and we cannot wait for the other fellow to start it because it is the responsibility of each individual citizen. By taking the long view our course should be apparent and not diverge sharply from our own personal benefit.

Although lateritic ore deposits are relatively flat-lying, surficial ore bodies, the evaluation of lateritic bauxite and nickel deposits is among the most difficult problems confronting an economic geologist. Laterite is a soil formed under tropical conditions resulting in the concentration, within the soil zone, of certain trivalent metals - principally iron and aluminum, but also, locally, nickel and manganese. The soil zone is divided into two parts: (a) the true soil or lateritic zone and (b) the zone of partially altered bed rock or saprolite. Whereas bauxite generally is confined to the lateritic zone, some nickel deposits occur in both the laterite and saprolite zones. The evaluation of bauxite and lateritic nickel deposits thus has both similarities and differences. These ores have been formed by supergene, soil-forming solutions moving downward through zones of widely varying permeability within the weathering rock. Because the permeability varies widely, both vertically and laterally. the extent of weathering may vary greatly within short distances. Because the weathering process varies widely, the degree of metal concentration may also vary widely. It is not at all uncommon for a laterite to change, within a few centimeters, from a virtually valueless rock to a high grade ore. Moreover, the depth of weathering, and hence the depth and form of the ore profile, vary greatly. Obviously, for this type of deposit, a few grab samples or a few drill holes are virtually worthless. The evaluation of such a deposit requires a sophisticated statistical study based on thousands of carefully selected samples. As a rule of thumb, the cost of evaluating a large bauxite or lateritic nickel deposit will be about one cent per ton of ore in the ground. Thus, the cost of evaluating a several hundred million ton deposit may be considerable. The following factors must be considered during the evaluation: Type of Sampling: The best and most reliable samples for the evaluation of lateritic ores are taken along large, vertical channels in hand-dug pits. Where labor costs are high, some form of drilling may be used in place of pitting, but it is always wise to choose a drilling procedure after checking drilling results against a series of pit channel samples. The drilling may not reproduce exactly the results from pit channel samples, but it may be possible to derive a constant correction factor. If the physical character of the laterite varies within the deposit, it may, of course, be necessary to change the type of drilling, the correction factor or both. In some areas, it has been found empirically that augers, chum drills, vacuum drills, rotary drills, or core drills yield satisfactory results. The problem is to find which drilling technique gives results most similar to channel samples through the heterogeneous sequence characterizing the laterite in a given area. In lateritic nickel deposits, the drilling characteristics of the lateritic and saprolitic portions of the deposit are very different. Within the saprolite, the major nickel values are commonly found in weathered zones within less altered boulders - a type of occurrence which makes sampling very difficult.

An Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for a major mining development typically has to address various aspects of surface water management, including some which generally tend to be the more contentious: the diversion of rivers and creeks from areas disturbed by mining, and their rehabilitation; the effective management of disturbed area run-off via the collection, containment and treatment of contaminated water on site in sedimentation dams; the collection, containment and treatment of mine pit water; the decommissioning of surface water storages; final void water quality; and water discharge criteria. Environmental Impact Assessment processes for proposed mining developments in Australia at the state and commonwealth level usually involve a form of Initial Advice Statement (or Notice of Intent), Terms of Reference, an EIS, and a Supplementary Report (or similar) which responds to agency and public comment on the EIS. The EIS is used by approval agencies to decide the acceptability of the Project, and to set the conditions of approval. The conditions are often in the form of a state-issued æOperational LicenceÆ or similar. With mining, the initial approval at the EIS stage is often just a pre-cursor to various other planning related approvals, including obtaining a mining lease. Afterwards, mine plans and plans of operations must be submitted to government at various stages of the mineÆs life, ostensibly to provide the detailed mine planning over periods of one û five years. Despite all this additional planning and documentation beyond the submission of the EIS, government approval agencies are increasingly not satisfied with conceptual water management designs and commitments to an outcome (such as meeting a specified water quality standard) in the EIS. Agencies are also requiring sufficient water management design information to be convinced that the outcomes are achievable. To assist proponents of major mining developments, the Queensland Government has published Technical Guidelines for water management, and Environment Australia has published a æBest Practice Environmental Management in MiningÆ booklet on water management. In addition, the Australian and New Zealand Environment and Conservation Council (ANZECC. 2000) has published Water Quality Guidelines which provide an approach to water management, and provide receiving water investigation trigger criteria. So, what are the water management issues that are likely to be the subject of comment, debate and negotiation prior to the EIS being approved? and what commitments may a mining proponent have to make in order to convince the approval agencies that sufficient investigation and design has been provided? This paper provides some answers to this question, by reference to recent major mining proposals which the author has managed through state and commonwealth Environmental Impact Assessment processes.

Very fine wet sizing of minerals such as kaolin, precipitated calcium carbonate, lime milk, and clay slip is a difficult process to achieve using standard vibrating screens. With particle sizes ranging in the sub-microns combined with the agglomerating tendencies of certain materials, screen blinding becomes a serious issue. Sizetec, Inc. has developed an innovative screening equipment to help solve this problem. The High Performer Screen uses powerful linear vibrations to help break apart agglomerated particles and prevent screen blinding. Optionally fitted with the Air Explosion Screen Cleaning System, compressed air can be periodically injected into the screen underflow chamber to clean the screen surface without the use of water sprays. This paper highlights some of the key features of the Sizetec High Performer Screen and describes typical performance that can be expected based on results from various trials conducted in the kaolin industries.

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines describing gypsum mining and crushing methods and costs at various operations throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs may in many instances cause embarrassment to individual operators as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to a technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is called specifically to this differentiation so that there may be no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulation. This paper deals specifically with the mining and crushing methods employed by Victor Plaster, Inc., Victor, Ontario County, N. Y. The maximum annual production capacity of this company is 150,000 tons of crushed gypsum. The methods and practices employed arc typical of those followed in the gypsum mines in western New York State. The shaft is, perhaps, the deepest and the thickness of the gypsum mined is above the average for the section.

F. C. HENDERSCHOTT,* New York, N. Y.-I am going to take, as the text of what I shall discuss, a portion of the second paragraph of Mr. Stanford's paper. It read as follows: "The most vital need of the management is for more brains. The logical course for an engineer ;in charge of an industrial organization is, therefore, to direct whatever forces may be at his command toward the development, training and guiding of-all the brains in his organization. This is easier said than done, for it involves the carrying on toward two objectives, the maximum of productive work and the development of the individuals, who perform it;" and the last sentence of the paper; "Industry has no greater asset than an intelligent workman." The United States of America, at the outbreak of the present war, had the best equipment of any nation in the world. That statement holds not only for our -shops and our transportation systems and our stores and our farms and our homes, but it holds generally.. There was no other nation in. the world that had so good equipment as the United States. There was no other nation in the world that could be called progressive that has such poorly trained workers as the United States. Even Norway, Denmark, Sweden and New Zealand ranked ahead of us. Now that is the, problem, generally speaking, and there was recognition of that fact, a growing recognition which-took form, and one of its forms was what we call the corporation school. Now obviously a corporation has no particular educational functions, but as is said in the closing sentence of Mr. Stanford's paper, or as is implied, an industrial institution is, after all, the reflection of the aggregate of the efficiency of the individuals who compose that organization. There is no way of getting away from that. If your individuals, from your president down, are efficient, if your individual has developed his brains, if he is a trained man, you have got an efficient organization, and if you haven't that condition, you have got weaknesses and your organization is no stronger than those weaknesses. I maintain that the same thing holds for a nation; .a nation is as efficient as the collective efficiency of the individuals who compose the nation, and no more so.

ASIDE from the John Fritz Medal, in which the Institute partici¬pates through its representation on the John Fritz Medal Board, the Institute itself has three major awards to make annually and one special prize for excellence in technical papers, as follows The Robert W. Hunt Medal and Prize, The J. E. Johnson, Jr , Award, the James Douglas Medal, and The Lewisohn Platinum Prize to senior members. ROBERT W. HUNT MEDAL AND PRIZE The partners of Robert W. Hunt established a fund which was presented to the Institute at a fitting ceremony on May 27, 1920, to establish an annual medal and a sum of money to be awarded under the following rules¬ 1 The award shall consist of two prizes, first of a gold medal, second of a sum of money, a certificate to accompany each prize. The money prize shall not be awarded to -a member over 40 years of age, but under unusual circumstances, both prizes may be allotted to one person provided that he is not over 40 years of age. In general it will be understood that the Committee shall award the money prize to the younger men, rather than the medal 2 The awards shall be made not oftener than once a year to that person or persons contributing to the Institute the best original paper or papers on iron and steel The scope of the term "iron and steel" shall be determined by the sub-committee considering the awards In general, papers dealing with the practical side of the subject have preference over those dealing with the theoretical side m recognition of the fact that Captain Hunt's main contributions to the industry have been in the improvement of production and quality of material. 3 A sub-committee of three to five, including the Chairman of the Iron and Steel Committee, shall be appointed by the Iron and Steel Committee annually to adjudge the award subject to approval.. , 4 The awarding committee shall submit its report to the Iron and Steel Committee at its October Meeting, and the award be certified to the Secretary of the Institute in time to permit the presentation to be made at the Annual Meeting of the Institute. 5 The recipient of the award shall be designated "The Hunt Medallist " This prize is administered by the Iron and Steel Committee.

Solvent floods using slugs of solvent have been found to show continuity in behavior from the vapor pressure of the solvent to the critical pressure for the two-component driving gas-solvent system. In the pressure region between the solvent vapor pressure and the critical pressure for the gas-solvent system, the gar and solvent are only partially miscible. Although complete miscibility cannot be obtained at these pressures, complete oil recovery is possible in principle. In two-phase solvent floods the solvent is propagated tllrough the reservoir, primarily, in the vapor phase. The carrier gas requirements constitute a significant factor in the economics of the process. A qualitative theory is proposed for estimating the amount of dry gas required to move the solvent through the reservoir. The theory shows that for two-phase solvent floods the total gas needed is a minimum at the vapor pressure of the solvent and at the critical pressure for the gas-solvent system, and is a maximum at some intermediate pressure. The predictions of the theory are supported by experimental studies using methane, butane and decane or methane, propane and decane in a natural sandstone core. INTRODUCTION Previously, solvent slug processes have been found effective for oil recovery in two pressure ranges. First, conventional miscible displacements are possible at pressures greater than the critical pressure for the gas-solvent system. Second, Jenks, et al,' have shown that, at pressures slightly in excess of the vapor pressure of the solvent, a solvent slug can be propagated through a reservoir by a gas essentially insoluble in the liquid solvent. The solvent bank displaces the oil ahead of it. Both of these processes, at least ideally, are capable of recovering all of the oil in the swept regions. Slug processes for which the gas and solvent are partially miscible have not been considered; that is, those systems for which the solvent and driving gas form two equilibrium phases in which the vapor phase contains a significant amount of solvent and the liquid phase an appreciable amount of the driving gas. Welge and Johnson' have shown that the gas needed to movc a solvent slug through the reservoir increases with increasing pressure above the vapor pressure of the solvent. It will be shown that solvent slug processes can, theoretically, recover all of the oil at any pressure greater than the vapor pressure of the solvent. But the amount of gas required to move the solvent through the reservoir depends very much on the pressure and temperature. In the present study a maximum in the gas requirements was both predicted theoretically and observed experimentally. This result has not been reported previously, and would not have been predicted from the Welge and Johnson model. The gas requirements are a minimum at the pressures corresponding to the vapor pressure of the solvent and again at the critical pressure for the gas-solvent system, and are a maximum at some intermediate pressure. AN APPROXIMATE THEORY FOR TWO-PHASE SOLVENT FLOODING The differences and similarities between conventional solvent floods and two-phase solvent floods are best understood by referring to concepts developed for miscible displacement in which miscibility is generated in the reservoir. In Fig. 1(A), a ternary diagram is shown for a hypothetical gas-solvent-oil system. To be rigorous the three components should each consist of a single molecular species. The pressure for Fig. 1(A) is greater than the critical pressure for the binary gas-solvent system at the specified temperature. Diagrams of this type are the ones most frequently referred to in discussions of enriched-gas drive and miscible displacement. A limiting tie line is shown tangent to the two-phase envelope and intersecting the gas-solvent line at Point A. To obtain generated miscibility with this type system, others have shown that, for an oil of Composition D, a mixture of gas and solvent must be injected which is richer in solvent than that composition indicated by A. An oil repeatedly contacted with a gas phase richer than A changes toward a composition which would be at equilibrium with the injected mixture, that is, a composition lying on a tie line which passes through the injected-gas composition. Since no such tie line exists, the oil is enriched to the point at which it becomes directly miscible with the injected mixture. At pressures lower than the critical pressure for the gas-solvent system, other types of phase diagrams are observed. The ones of interest in this paper are for pressures greater than the vapor pressure of the solvent, but less than the critical pressure of the gas-solvent system. Such a ternary diagram is shown on Fig. 1(B). In this case, two-phase behavior is observed not only for gas-oil mixtures, but also for certain compositions in the gas-solvent system. "IntroductionThe production of pig iron, wrought iron bars and castings in Quebec during the 18th and 19th centuries has been so closely identified by historians with the Forges du St. Maurice on the St. Maurice River a few miles north of Trois Rivières (Three Rivers), that one is sometimes left with the impression that it was the only iron works that ever operated in the province. There were however, about twelve others, one of which was so completely re-built that it should probably be considered as a separate entity. All but two were constructed after the midpoint of the 1800s, coinciding with the growing Canadian demand for ""charcoal pig"" for railway car wheels and castings for industry, and about half of them were technically, if not economically, successful. The misconception about the Forges du St. Maurice may have come about either because of its long history of somewhat less than continuous production over a century and a half, or a tendency of Quebec historians to concentrate on events in the French-Canadian rather than the English-Canadian milieu, but whatever the reason, the other Quebec iron work s have been generally ignored. All but one of the Quebec blast furnaces could be described as ""preindustrial"" with capacities ranging between three and ten tons per day, the exception being the Radnor furnace built in 1892 with a maximum production of about 35 tons per day and an alleged capacity of 50 tons per day.Until a railway network was completed in the 1880s, the location of all the Quebec iron works except the Grantham Iron works was dictated by close proximity to adequate ore reserves because horse transport was of little use beyond a ten-mile radius. The other essentials of forest resources (mainly soft woods) for charcoal, limestone for flux and water power, were generally available except within a few miles on either side of the St. Lawrence river. Among the dozen iron works established in Quebec between 1732 and 1880, seven used bog iron ore in charcoal-fired furnaces."

At this time it is expected that lists of symbols in general use throughout the country will be presented and the symbols most generally used will be recommended for adoption.

Magnesium, the eighth most abundant element in the earth's crust, is found widely distributed in a variety of minerals. Among the more commercially important ones are magnesite (MgCO3), brucite (Mg[OH]2), dolomite (CaMg[C03]2), and the salts magnesium sulfate and chloride often found in natural brines. Among other commercially important magnesium-containing minerals are olivine ([MgFe]2Si04), talc (H2Mg3[Si03]4), and serpentine (H4Mg3Si2O9). These are valuable because of desirable characteristics given them by the magnesium content and its placement in the particular crystal structure. These minerals are the raw materials for a host of products including magnesium metal and several grades of magnesia or magnesia-containing materials for refractories, fluxes, fillers, insulation, cements, decolorants, fertilizers, and chemicals. Considering only those minerals valued for their magnesia or magnesium content, over 85% of the material tonnages are processed to be used as refractories. Dolomite, which is used in enormous tonnages for its physical properties in construction, has an important use as a refractory raw material in its own right and, after calcination, as a precipitant for magnesium hydroxide, which is an intermediate for the production of magnesia or magnesium metal. Magnesia from the reaction of calcined dolomite (or limestone) with seawater or magnesium-containing brines has supplanted much of the production of magnesia from mined magnesite, particularly in the United States. The best known of the minerals directly and widely exploited for magnesia content is magnesite, one of the calcite group of rhombohedral carbonates which includes calcite (CaC03), siderite (FeCO3), and rhodochrosite (MnCO3) among others. The members of this group enter into a wide range of substitutional solid solutions when the positive ions have similar radii. The radii of magnesium and iron ions are within 6% of each other; hence, magnesite and siderite form a complete series of which breunnerite (ferroan magnesite) is a well-known end member. However, the radius of calcium ion is 36% larger than that of magnesium ion, and only limited substitution exists at each end of the MgCO3-CaCO3 series. Dolomite is not a member of the calcite group, but results when calcium and magnesium ions alternate in equal number in an ordered structure among carbonate ions. The result of these relationships is that calcite and dolomite, often found intermixed with magnesite, occur commonly as identifiable crystal entities which can often be separated to a varying degree from the magnesite by various beneficiation techniques. Magnesite, when pure, contains 47.8% MgO and 52.2% CO.. The pure mineral is sometimes, but rarely, found as transparent crystals resembling calcite, but, preponderantly, magnesite contains variable amounts of the carbonates, oxides, and silicates of iron, calcium, manganese, and aluminum. Magnesite may be either crystalline or amorphous (cryptocrystalline). The crystalline form has a hardness of 3.5 to 4.0. The color may range from white to black with shades of yellow, blue, red, or gray. The color is not a fundamentally significant indicator of purity, but in a given deposit, an experienced person can often roughly grade magnesite by assessing color and crystallinity. The Bureau of Mines investigated the typical physical and chemical properties of coal waste materials from the western part of the United States. The results are compared, in so far as possible, with the properties of waste materials from eastern coal operations. The authors found a disparity of mines and preparation plants among western U.S. coal operations and dissimilarities with typical operations in the East. The relatively cleaner product from the predominance of surface mining and the occurrence of thicker seams in the West reduces the amount of coal preparation required and the size of the waste piles. Because of the abundance of land available for waste disposal, many of the piles are low and extended over large areas. New concepts relating statistical shear strength data to liquifaction potential are presented. The somewhat limited data indicates that western coal sludge is coarser with higher permeabilities and shear strengths than the eastern deposits.

In the routine examinatlion of a wide variety of metal specimens it is sometimes necessary to have special methods of polishing in order to retain and reveal certain details in each specimen. Among such special cases is the retention of graphite in malleable and gray cast irons, the preservation of all types of non metallic inclusions in both hard and soft steels, obtaining a scratch-frec surface with soft metals, and avoiding the usual relief effects with very hard specimen. such as tool metals c3o1ltaining various carbide and nitride phases. It, is the purpose of this paper to give an account of some of these special polishing methods in use at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories. The polishing procedures outlined have been found to give uniform results. It is obvious that only general rules and the most important working details can be given here. Following these rules, the polisher can obtain satisfactory results if he possesses the necessary patience and has a sincere desire to give as nearly perfect a finish as possible to his work. Procedure The specimen is flattened with considerablecare on a file or sharp cutting sanding belt, since the initial production of a flat surfacc greatly facilitatcs subscqucnt polishing. The polishing motors have two speed., 600 and 1200 r.p.111. ,It higher speeds specimens arc likely to he over-Ileated, therefore the high speed is used only when a saving of time is important. The following abrasive papers are used consecutively: Yo. 2, So. 1, No. 0, No. 00 and No. 000. The final wet polishing is done oil a cloth-covercd metal disk. Woolen broadcloth of the best quality and capable of resisting severe pressure is most commonly used on the last lap. . polishing felt of the type used for polishing optical glass has been found equally satisfactory and is much stronger than broadcloth.
