The objective of this investigation was to determine minimum air velocities and entrainment rates for coal and rock dust dispersion in wind tunnel experiments under conditions that simulate dispersion from surfaces in coal mines where airflows are induced by weak gas explosions. Dust deposits were bed-or ridge-shaped; particle sizes were 6 to 80 microns (cohesive deposits) or 100 to 150 microns (free-flowing deposits); and wind tunnels were 7.62 cm wide by 5.08 cm high by 300 cm long, and 2.4 m wide by 1.5 m high by 215 m long. The investigation showed that minimum air velocities (directed at mid-height) of separate, layered, or mixed piles of coal dust and rock dust were within the range 5 to 30 m/sec, independent of size of wind tunnel. This finding considerably facilitates scaling of data to mine-size passageways. Free-flowing deposits dispersed relatively slowly by single-particle detachment; cohesive dusts dispersed faster by the breaking and lifting of large clumps along weak failure flames; particle dispersion occurred in flight. Layered or mixed deposits of coal and rock dust did not disperse selectively. Semiempirical expressions were derived relating minimum air velocities and dispersion rates to dust-pile geometry, cohesion, porosity, and bulk density.

The Boddington Gold Mine (BGM) is managed by Worsley Alumina Pty Ltd (Worsley) and is located 110 km south-east of Perth, Western Australia. The gold mine, which has operated since mid-1987, was originally constructed to treat 3 Mtpa of gold bearing oxide ores, has subsequently been expanded to treat 7 Mtpa and is presently one of the largest gold producing operations in Australia.During 1990 a Supergene/Basement Plant was constructed to treat 250 000 tpa of copper supergene and hypogene ores and basement ores which contain significant gold grades and which are encountered at the lower levels of the existing oxide orebody. The SupergeneBasement Plant has the versatility to treat a wide range of ore types, producing both gold bullion and copper-gold concentrates. It is a stand-alone facility adjacent to the existing 7 Mtpa gold plant.

DEFINITE data on the amplitude and effect of ground movement in specific mineral formations, caused by various methods used in the mining of ores, coal, and nonmetals, or in the extraction through wells of petroleum, sulphur, and soluble salts, are increasingly needed because of legal liabilities from damage to overlying or adjacent properties, and growing concern as to the conservation of national mineral resources. Not since the committee was established in 1923 has it been so difficult to get technical papers giving ground movement and subsidence data from specific mine operators. The reasons given, as above indicated, are pending or threatening lawsuits. There are three major objectives in ground movement and subsidence studies : (1) Maximum recovery of a mineral resource. (2) Minimizing damage to surface structures, highways, railroads, and agricultural lands caused by caving or subsidence, which may in some situations, as along the Gulf of Mexico shore, cause flooding by surface waters. (3) Lessening damage to overlying or adjacent mineral by back-filling of mine excavations as completely as possible.

"Substituting Portland cement with slag cement is one of the most economically attractive uses of slags. For this application, high cooling rates are required to form an amorphous structure. However, this is counteracted by the need to use small coolant flowrate to allow recovery of slag thermal energy as high quality heat to the coolant fluid. Therefore, a relationship between cooling rate of slag and its structure is essential to recover the heat effectively while making an amorphous slag.A modified Single Hot Thermocouple Technique (SHTT) was employed to investigate the crystallization behavior of slags by plotting their TTT (Time-Temperature, Transformation) diagrams. Seven different slag compositions containing CaO, SiO2, Al2O3, MgO were prepared at varying basicity (CaO/SiO2 =0.5-1.4).The results indicate that with increasing basicity, the TTT curves of glassy to crystalline transformation shift to the left which means higher crystallization tendency. This agrees with the fact that with the increase of basicity, the Si-O bonds are weakened, which in turn facilitates the re-ordering and crystallization of the silicate structure."

In recent years there has been a major change among mining companies in their mining methods. This has been driven by the need to increase shareholder value and optimising the value from an operation. With this understanding there has been a need for all producers to become more efficient in their mining processes. An analysis of the coal losses at Mount Thorley Operations indicated that the major losses were in the dragline section of the mine due to coal damage from throw blasting. This damage was evident after the removal of the overburden by the dragline.Coal and Allied Mount Thorley Mine in partnership with Orica Explosives developed a process to reduce the coal loss associated with the throw blasting of Mt Thorley. Orica provided its specialised knowledge and experience in the drilling and blasting area and combined this with the local mining knowledge and expertise of Mount Thorley Operations personnel to conduct the project. This partnership reduced coal loss in excess of 50 per cent whilst maintaining targeted dragline productivity.

One possible approach for the recovery of mercury from acid plant blow-down sludge in smelters is the use of a vacuum retort reactor for the vaporization of the mercury with subsequent collection of metallic mercury in an attached condenser. An experimental study was undertaken to investigate the vaporization of mercury when present as a compound in the Hg-S-O and Hg-Se systems. A transpiration reactor was modified to operate under reduced pressure and with a continuous flow of inert sweep gas. A water-cooled cold finger was inserted into the exit end of the reactor to provide for the rapid quenching of the exit gases and the collection of the mercury. Rates of vaporization were measured at several temperatures for each compound and were generally found to be constant at a given temperature and reactor pressure. The results were used to determine the minimum operating temperature for 100% vaporization of the compound in 60 minutes. For Hg2SO4, HgSO4, and HgSO/2HgO the required temperatures. for a reactor pressure of 50 Torr. were determined to be 634°, 622°. and 603°C. respectively. For HgO, HgSe, and HgS the required temperatures were 557°. 451°. And 382°C. respectively. For HgS the rate of vaporization was also measured at a reactor pressure of 1 00 Torr. The rate of vaporization was found to be slower resulting in an increased vaporization temperature of 423°C. It was also determined that the mercury vapor present in the exit gas stream can back-react with the other gas species to a significant extent and can result in very little condensed metallic mercury. For the vaporization of both HgS and HgSe. the mercury vapor was found to have back-reacted to the extent that virtually none of the vaporized mercury was collected in metallic form. For the vaporization of Hg2S04? HgS04, and HgSO4*2HgO the amount of metallic mercury recovered varied from approximately 50% for HgS04*2HgO to approximately 10% for Hg2S04 and HgS04. Only for HgO was the recovered mercury in primarily elemental form. The application of the results to the operation of a vacuum retort and condenser system is discussed.

A novel liquid settlement system (LSS) was installed in advance of mining at a western United States (U.S.) longwall mine to measure total roof sag from the time of cutting to days after mining during gate road development. The system was used to compare differences in roof sag between conventional place-change mining using a Joy continuous miner and a Fletcher roof bolter and mining using a miner-bolter. The LSS was installed with an intrinsically safe, miniature data acquisition system (MIDAS) to record roof response at four locations in the same gate road. The system utilized pressure transducers to measure roof sag by the principle of falling head (fluid pressure) in fluid-filletubes installed in the immediate roof. Details of the LSS design, installation, data collection, post-processing, and future applications are discussed.

Civil construction is a sector of extreme impact in the Brazilian economy, with construction and demolition waste (RCD) having an extreme impact on the amount of urban solid waste. In this research it was proposed to propose a way of using these residues in the construction of concrete artifacts for structural use. Concrete specimens with sand substitution by RCD were produced in different percentages as a way to contribute to reduce,recycle and reuse thi large amount of waste from the construction industry. The objective of this work was to study the mechanical properties of structural concrete with total and partial replacement (25, 50, 75 and 100%) in sand mass. The results of the compression test indicate good quality for concretes with mass substitution of up to 75% per RCD.

THE COMMITTEE on Correlation of Research held two meetings in 1931. The first was a luncheon meeting on Feb. 19, at the Engineers Club, New York, attended by eight members and four guests-William H. Bassett, past-president of the Institute; Robert E. Tally, president; H. Foster Bain, secretary; and Alfred D. Flinn, director of the Engineering Foundation. Mr. Bassett gave a short resume of the circumstances leading to the formation of the Committee and expressed his opinion that the objectives as expressed by the Committee in its first annual report were in accordance with the ideas of the Institute officials. Mr. Tally stressed the great importance of research in the mining and metallurgical industries and stated that lie believed the Institute should encourage and promote research, and that this Committee could do a great deal to foster such work in the Institute. Mr. Bain pointed out that this Committee was appointed with a view to correlating and fostering research work. in the field of the Institute's activities. This could be done in various ways, as by encouraging the divisions and committees of the Institute to hold group meetings on research, by forming research subcommittees in the Institute divisions, and by bringing together research interest in. certain projects and the fund or organization that is equipped to carry out the project.

Profiled here are the eight RMCMI 2001 Scholarship Award winners. Seven of the eight attended the 97th Regular Meeting and Convention at the Steamboat Springs Sheraton Resort in Steamboat Springs, Colorado in lace June. Each spoke during the Scholarship Awards Monday luncheon and shared their goals with attendees. Thanks to the Patrons of the Institute each student received a 52,000 tuition credit, a plaque signifying the honor and the opportunity to thank the membership. The winners were guests of the Institute Sunday through Tuesday noon and had an outstanding opportunity to meet many in the coal industry that could be potential employers. The state vice presidents host the winners anti pay for their travel and hotel expenses. This is a continuing scholarship and may be renewed for tuition credit again in the senior year it the winner is a full time student and is recommended by the dean of the college or university. A resident from each of the eight member RMCMI states is selected by the Scholarship committee from Board approved institutions. Criterion for the awards is chat the recipient be (1) a full time sophomore student who will use the tuition credit in the junior year. (2) a U. S. citizen and a legal resident of the member state. (3) in good academic standing while pursuing a degree in a mining related field. They must have an expressed interest in western coal as a possible career path. "The Fond-du-Lac uranium deposit is located on the northern rim of the Athabasca Basin. The uranium mineralization is, for the most part, confined to the Athabasca Group, which is underlain by pre-Helikian metamorphic rocks of the Western Craton.The deposit is characterized by a remarkable train of mineralized glacial erratics which led to the original discovery. The mineralization is present as a ""high-grade"" core and a diffuse ""low-grade"" aureole. The ""high-grade"" core occurs as a stockwork of steeply dipping pitchblende veins which strike N 50°E. Hematite, siderite and secondary silicate are also abundant. The ""low-grade"" aureole contains uraniferous goethite, argillaceous material and rare carbon buttons. Recent alteration to coffinite has taken place along the margins of pre-existing ore minerals.The ""high-grade"" core is 390 m long and 10 to 40 m wide, and is surrounded by an irregularly shaped zone of ""low-grade"" mineralization with a similar length and a width of up to 350 m.Comparing the Fond-du-Lac deposit to other unconformity-type deposits, several important differences can be noted:1. Ninety per cent of the ore is above the unconformity, in the Athabasca sandstone.2. The deposit is not associated with underlying graphitic rocks or a major structure.3. The clay-rich alteration zone is not extensive around the Fond-du-Lac deposit.Although there are differences with other Athabasca unconformity-type deposits, the high-grade portion below the unconformity suggests a common origin.The ore deposit is postulated to have been formed from uranium-bearing solutions which entered the stockwork of fractures. Following the reduction in part of these solutions by pre-existing carbonaceous matter and pyrite and/or chemical reaction with pre-existing hematite, deposition continued as a result of decreasing temperature and pressure. Subsequently, minor supergene redistribution of the uranium has taken place."

In order to recover the waste heat of molten blast furnace slag, a reactor with top-submerged lance was established. The numerical simulation and experiment study of the flow characteristic in the reactor were conducted. The mathematical model of reactor was established and the Euler-Euler model was employed to simulate the gas-liquid flow in molten slag bath. Meanwhile, the experiment results were obtained and compared with the simulation to testify the accuracy of the established model. According to the bubble behavior in bath, there were four stages: initial expansion stage, bubble detachment stage, freedom lift up stage and bubble broken stage. When the flow field in bath fully developed, the gas fraction decreased with the increasing of bath depth. During injection process, the area near the nozzle and lower the bath would first generate two symmetric heliciform flow regime, and then the flow regime in whole bath would become irregular because of bubble lifting up and rupturing. The gas fraction in bath, the average velocity and turbulence energy of slag would decrease before it increased to maximum and then it would keep fluctuate in a range.

"A tremendous amount of research, analysis, and engineering time is used to design a proper roof support system including the type, length, and location of the roof bolts. Unfortunately, since the roof bolts are being installed under unsupported roof, the exact location for the bolt holes cannot easily be determined and then marked onto the roof. The actual location where the roof bolts are installed is typically left to visual estimates by the operator. This frequently results in either (1) the operator overestimating the space between roof bolts and installing more bolts than required, thereby increasing cost and reducing efficiency; or (2) the operator underestimating the space between roof bolts and installing fewer bolts than required, thereby reducing safety, leading to potential roof failure or possible violations.A patented laser light grid system has been developed by J .H. Fletcher and Monitech, a South African Company, to aid in proper machine positioning in the heading and proper bolt spacing. The system can also show when an entry is over width, requiring additional roof support. The system is relatively simple and inexpensive. The concept is applicable across the full range of roof bolters from low to high seams and from single boom to multiple boom bolters. The system can be configured to meet most bolting patterns.The system consists of several very small 1 milliwatt, class 2, line type lasers that project a line onto the roof. The actual laser is 27mm in diameter x 47mm long (1"" x 1.8""). In South Africa it is approved as intrinsically safe and is mounted inside a 50mm diameter x 64mm long (2""x 2.5"") protective housing. In the USA, we are seeking an X/P approval and the laser will be mounted in a headlight enclosure 110mm diameter x 125mm long (4.3"" x 5""). Fifteen of the systems have been installed in South African coal mines with good results.The system has aided the mines in meeting the bolt spacing tolerance used in the Republic of South Africa, which is typically 15% of the nominal bolt spacing or 7 in for 4-ft bolt spacing. Fletcher has submitted the system to MSHA for approval in the US."

The direct removal of lead ions from D2EHPA-kerosene using metallic zinc as the reducing agent was evaluated. The electrochemical process, called galvanic stripping, is a potential alternative stripping technique when standard chemical methods are not adequate. Four parameters found to be important in the rate of lead removal were studied in a factorially designed experiment. The variable evaluated included D2EHPA concentration, temperature, zinc surface area and solution agitation. Temperature and surface area were found to be the most significant, while agitation and D2EHPA concentration had less influence on the reaction. An activation energy of 22.5 Kcal/mole was calculated indicating a chemically-controlled process. The reaction was also sensitive to the concentration of oxygen in the system. The zinc required was considerably in excess of stoichiometry, possibly due to the dissolution and redeposition of lead: In general, the results were encouraging and demonstrated that lead impurities could be removed from D2EHPA using cementation type reactions.

The design of a preparation plant for minimum maintenance and clean up requires both the skills of the Engineer and the practical experience of the Operator. From the initial flow sheet and preliminary design until the plant is completed and operating, each phase of the work must be thoroughly explored for simplicity, workability and high efficiency. It is the responsibility of the Designing Engineer to develop the plant around the basic flow sheet, selecting equipment and materials not only with regards to Initial cost but also required upkeep and repair.

In this paper the authors present the background information to preheating and its development and describe the facilities available at the British Carbonization Research Association. The results obtained at BCRA including those collected during commissioning of the new plant at BCRA are summarized and reference is made to the research work planned for the next stage. The enlarged test-plant facilities at the British Carbonization Research Association embrace both 10-t (4.2 m high) and 17-t (6.5 m high) test ovens and two types of preheater, the preheated coal being charged by either gravity or pipeline. During the commissioning of the new equipment, an extensive programme on preheating was initiated and the paper includes the results obtained so far. These cover tests on wet and preheated coals and commercial blends, the use of Rosin- and Cerchar-type preheaters and charging by both gravity and pipeline systems to the 10-t and 17-t ovens. Accordingly, for the first time a direct comparison is possible of both the performances of the plants and the qualities of the respective products. The paper also outlines the findings from a study of the carryover of solids during the charging of preheated coal and of the treatment of those solids.

Introduction Asamera Minerals (US) Inc. and its joint venture partner, Breakwater Resources Ltd., discovered ore grade gold mineralization on their 20 km2 (5000 acre) Wenatchee, WA land position in February 1983. Due to the high grade nature of the discovery ore and the known reserves of ore in the "B Reef' and "B West" zones previously outlined by other companies, a decision was made to construct a mine/mill operation near the known ore occurrences. Further drilling in the discovery area quickly expanded known gold occurrences to more than 3.6 Mt (4 million st) with tentative in-place ore grade of 7 g/t (0.25 oz per st) and minor silver values. Based on existing knowledge of the ore body and the rapidly increasing ore reserve, a decision to build a 1.8-kt/d (2000-stpd) mine and mill complex was made in the second quarter of 1983. A schedule was devised to begin immediate mine development, shaft sinking, environmental and land use permitting, and mill and tailings dam construction (Fig. 1). Meeting the scheduled startup date, April 1, 1985, required a fast track schedule in all areas. To this end, Asamera purchased the Oracle Ridge Partners concentrator. This was an assemblage of new equipment designed for use as a copper concentrator in southern Arizona. The purchase contained all of the major mineral dressing equipment - crushers, screens, rod and ball mills, etc. and an engineering package. It did not include most of the other required items, such as buildings, conveyors, pipelines, tanks, and pumps. At the same time, core samples were sent to two independent process development laboratories for initial flowsheet development. Due to the refractory nature of the carbonaceous ore, cyanide leaching was not feasible. Flotation was selected as the concentration process. Further testing showed that autoclaving of the flotation concentrate followed by cyanidation would result in overall recovery of about 85% gold. A mine manager was hired to begin assembling an operations staff, hire an environmental consulting firm, and begin mine development. Environmental and land use concerns were major obstacles due to the mine's close proximity to a city of 20,000 people. These concerns had to be rapidly defined so as to mitigate any adverse impacts from and mining processing operations. Baseline data dealing with weather, air and water quality, and sound were measured before start of mine construction. Concentrator and flowsheet development remained static until October 1983 while definition drilling and mine development proceeded. In late October, a process engineer was hired to coordinate development of a process flowsheet, purchase the remainder of the concentrator equipment, prepare a concentrator construction contract, finalize concentrator detail engineering, and combine environmental and process requirements with a tailings dam design. Process development There were only 17 months remaining to mill start up from the hiring date of the process engineer. Therefore, the process flowsheet had to be finalized rapidly. To accomplish this, samples of drill core from the highest grade (and therefore potentially the most commercial) ore zones were sent to an outside metallurgical laboratory to confirm beneficiation tests on the flotation process. Test results again showed that flotation would provide about an 86% gold recovery. Therefore, all further testing was concentrated on flotation and autoclave/cyanidation of flotation concentrates. Focusing on a well known process such as flotation was important in accomplishing the rapid design and construction of the concentrator. If, during these next phases, we were continually changing design concepts, layout, and process flow, the mill startup would have been delayed many months. Once a process flowsheet is selected the process engineer must obtain the process criteria needed to design the beneficiation system. For example, it was known in early December that the Oracle Ridge rod and ball mills were too small to grind 1.8 kt/d (2000 stpd) of Wenatchee ore. A decision had to be made to purchase a large, used ball mill and convert the Oracle Ridge ball mill to a rod mill. The process engineer must be cognizant of the process criteria needed to size and select equipment. If not, the process engineer must use the professional services of the equipment manufacturing companies to review the requirements that the equipment is asked to perform. For the Wenatchee system, this resulted in the adaptation of a ball mill to a rod mill with a weight limit of grinding rods to protect the mill bearings and drive trains. When a decision is required, the process engineer has to present the facts and options in a manner that allows a rapid decision. This information must include costs, equipment availability, and effect on the construction schedule. At the Cannon mine, there were process development details that resulted in decisions similar to the ball mill purchase. These included an increased flotation residence time from eight to 25 minutes, an increased thickener area requirement, a high pressure tailings pumping system, and area constraints in plant layout. All of these decisions had to be timely and required assistance from manufacturers' service engineers, and knowledge of the alternate costs and effects on construction completion. This Bureau of Mines publication presents guidelines for mining near surface and underground bodies of water. The guidelines were based on information developed under contract in three phases of study, as follows: (1) Collection and documentation of data from worldwide sources; (2) application of existing guidelines, foreign, Federal, and State, to case histories of previous inundations; and (3) development of recommended guidelines for underground coal mining near bodies of water aimed at maximum efficient utilization of underground coal resources consistent with minimizing inundation hazards. While the contract guidelines were for the mining of coal seams, they may also be used for mining any tabular sedimentary mineral deposit. Tables are given for the determination of the size of coal pillars needed; for other bedded deposits, similar tables could be determined based on their strength properties.
