In essence, it exists to provide a basis for communication between the Department, industry. Aboriginal organisations and Traditional Owners. The paper outlines the various ways in which this is accomplished including the preparation of detriment submissions for pending land claim hearings, the use of promotional material to support access to Aboriginal Land for NTGS Mapping Programs and field work, and advice/assistance on exploration and mining issues.

"Hot deformability of M42 tool steel additionally alloyed with cobalt and molybdenum was investigated. Hot-compression tests were carried out in the temperature range 850 °C -1200 °C, at strain rates range 0.001--6s-l up to strain of0.9. Field-emission scanning electron microscope and optical microscopy were used for characterization of microstructure of deformed samples, which revealed a very complex precipitation of carbides that strongly depends on the soaking temperature, the soaking time, the stress state, the deformation temperature as well as on the strain rate. Gathered data was used to calculate the processing parameters such as process maps, apparent activation energies and strain hardening exponents. For better understanding of thermodynamical properties of the studied steel a simultaneous thermal analysis was conducted. Furthermore the analysis of phase equilibrium was calculated using Thermo-Cale software. On the basis of these studies the optimal soaking temperature and process windows were determined.IntroductionHot workability ofledeburitic tool steels is important economic factor. This means that for each tool steel individuallysafe range of hot working parameters should be revealed. Publications in the literature with regard to the hot workability of tool steels are rare and therefore more information from this research area is desired.The relatively low hot workability of ledeburitic tool steels, i.e. steels in which the solidification is completed by a eutectic transformation of the residual interdendritic liquid to austenite and various alloy carbides (ledeburitic carbides), is usually characterized by the production of surface and internal cracks during the hot deformation."

THE Dolly Varden Mine is situated in the Kitsault River valley, eighteen miles from the head of Alice arm, in the Nass River mining division of British Columbia. During the years 1919-21 it was operated by the Taylor Engineering Company, Limited, and produced 1,300,000 oz. silver from about 36,000 tons of ore. The ore was transported by narrow-gauge railway to Alice arm, and shipped to the smelter at Anyox for treatment. During recent years, a small quantity of high-grade ore has been extracted by leasers and shipped to the smelter at Tacoma, Wash. Unfortunately, the bonanza ores which occurred near the surface did nor persist to depth, and two hundred feet below the exposures only rare and unimportant patches of ridi ore have been found. Two opinions exist as to the origin of this rich silver ore. One, advanced by V. Delmage (1, 2), is that the ores are hypogene, and the other, by G. Hanson(3, 4, S), is that the ores are the result of supergene enrichment. It is true that Dolmage first advanced his view that the ores are primary because they appeared to be analagous to Premier ore, which he had studied in detail and which he considered to be primary. The present authors have had access to excellent suites of material from both mines and consider the comparison well taken, the only essential mineralogical difference being the presence at the Premier mine, in addition to the silver minerals, of gold and electrum. Although the arguments put forward by Delmage have, in the opinion of the authors, never been refuted, nevertheless R. P. D. Graham(6), in a reference to the mine published in 1924, describes the ore as of supergene origin, and since then nobody appears to have challenged this statement. Indeed, in 1935, Hanson re-affirmed his earlier conclusion(5).

The extractive mineral industries share a number of common characteristics and basic problems which are completely different from those associated with manufacturing and mercantile operations. These industries now supply about 95% of the inanimate energy consumed in this country, and share with agriculture in providing virtually all of our basic raw materials. Mineral producers, like farmers, are subject to the economic hazards of fluctuating markets and prices. Unlike farmers, however, they cannot renew the productivity of the earth, but must seek continually for new sources of supply. The necessity for exploration and development of new reserves, to replace those used up by production, introduces additional factors of economic risk. These operations require the expenditure of large amounts of capital, often well in advance of any assurance of profitability. Commercial banks that understand these special problems can provide a variety of constructive financial services to the mineral industries. The history of cooperation between banks and mining enterprises has yet to be written, but there is every indication that it would encompass a period of hundreds of years. Records refer to depository and lending services by the early European private bankers involving precious metals and jewels. Many of the exploratory voyages to the Far East and the New World were organized with the financial backing of wealthy syndicates, some of which also provided banking services, in the hope of finding new sources of gold and other precious minerals. In the United States many large banks are closely identified with the development of some of the larger mineral deposits such as the Mesabi Range and the gold fields of California.

In this paper, we show that the methane emission and the dust generation in under-ground mining currently and in the future pose operational, health and safety conditions which adversely Impact face productivity and worker satisfaction. One solution is the use of a dual-aircourse system of ventilation. In this concept, one aircourse captures and exhausts to the surface the dust generated and the methane emitted in coal/mineral fragmentation while a second aircourse provides workers with cleaner air for breathing and comfort. Various dual-aircourse configurations adapted to the Variable Wall Miner are analyzed and compared with conventional mining in gassy seams, indicating a marked reduction in the required air quantity and the number of aircourses.

As part of the continuous improvement and increase productivity to achieve the mining and extraction plan of a low-grade open pit copper operation, alternatives are required to expand the blast pattern to maximize drills and steels resources along to ensure the fragmentation results for the process plant with volumes from 500k tons of broken material per day. Therefore, the application of aluminum based ultra-high energy explosives was an alternative to achieve the objective of expanding the production pattern by 34% while maintaining energy factors levels along with the distribution of explosive and the application of the pocket charge in the stemming level, reducing the load factor, maintaining the fragmentation results in P80 and increasing the percentage of fines less than 1.0 in (2.54 cm). An important development to ensure the supply and perform successfully blasthole loading was the implementation of a supply system with pre-blending (aluminized emulsion) which is stored in silos and load through factory trucks. In the field we ensured optimal initial and final density levels with chemical sensitizer to perform the most fracturing work in the rock, complementary evaluations were performed to predict flyrock and define safe equipment evacuation radiuses along with advanced vibration monitoring for the sustainability of the mine.

"Southern Peru Copper Corporation's Ilo Refinery, the largest in Peru, began operations in 1975 with a production capacity of 165,000 stpy. Southern Peru bought the Refinery from the state owned Minero Peru SA on June 1, 1994.The Refinery processes blister from Southern Peru's I/o Smelter. Blister copper is processed in an anode plant equipped with two 365 st tilting reverberatory furnaces, a 26 mold casting wheel and an anode press machine. Copper is electrorefined in a tank house equipped with 768 commercial cells, 44 stripper cells, and 40 liberator cells, utilizing two electrolyte circuits and a 21,000 Ampere rectifier.During 1989 through 1994 a program for improving productivity was carried out by increasing the number of cells and increasing current density to the total rectifier capacity. As a result, a capacity 215,000 stpy of refined copper, 2 million tr. oz silver and 6,000 tr. oz gold per year was achieved. In 1994 Southern Peru announced plans to increase capacity to 250,000 stpy of cathode with a US$ 18 million investment and a US$ 2 million investment in environmental improvement projects, as part of the purchase agreement with the Peruvian government.This paper outlines the scope of the SPCC lio Refinery modernization and environmental program. It describes the implementation of the Electrolytic Plant expansion based on instaliation of polymer concrete cells, a new rectifier, a new selenium roaster and a Precious Metal Plant upgrades."

Variations in many aspects of physical and chemical grade are often of concern to mining operations and mineral processing plants. In most circumstances these amounts of variation are predictable. At the time of planning new operations, we should be able to predict the amount of sampling and testing variation which our sampling devices, laboratory procedures and on-stream analysis devices will achieve. We should know how well our stockpiles, reclaimers and bins will homogenise material (or whether segregation will actually increase the amount of variation). We should be able to predict the amounts of variation that will occur on the important time or tonnage scales at the crucial p oints in our proposed operation. And once these amounts of variation are reliably known, mine planning will seem a little bit more like dealing with known knowns rather than like dealing with unknown unknowns.The first step towards quantifying amounts of variation for planned operations is to assess amounts of variation for existing operations. How many operations have estimates of amounts of variation in their databases? How often are people able to partition amounts of variation into amounts due to sampling error, amounts due to sample preparation, amounts due to assaying, and the amount of real variation in the stream of material?CITATION:Robinson, G K, 2012. "Spent lead battery recycling still shows few weak points in the achievement of a 100% recycling of different waste matters and by- products arising from the recycling process. Some of said problems are dealing with aqueous streams outgoing the recycling plant, and more particularly, a) the waste waters discarded from the breaking and separation unit, b) purification of the spent electrolyte drained from waste batteries and upgrade to a quality compatible with full re-use by the batteries’ manufacturers, c) purification of the mother liquors discarded in the sodium sulfate crystallization process so to produce a salt of commercial grade. All of the above listed problems have been satisfactorily overcome applying an electrochemical process that, through different process conditions and parameters, is able to remove the harmful impurities that hinder the successful commercialization of such by products, or, at least, that can avoid heavy and expensive treatment plant and operation.IntroductionAlmost 100% of commercial lead and lead alloys produced by secondary lead plants is recycled to the new lead accumulators manufacture. The other by-products and residues produced through the lead recycling process may be classified into two groups:a) matters reusable in the new accumulators production processb) matters produced as a result of various reagents and additives used in the recycling process, to be sold to different market sectorsQuality and saleability of by-products are significant points for the economics of the secondary lead plant operation, because, if said by-products are not saleable, they are just wastes, so offsetting potential revenues, and, at the same time, adding a heavy burden to operating cost, like disposal cost [1]. When looking at a typical, modern lead scrap batteries recovery cycle, it is quite evident that we are still rather far from dealing with a waste-less technology (fig.1).The group a) includes 3 by-products produced through the breaking process: among those matters the polypropylene only usually reaches a standard quality suitable for sale to lead manufacturing sector or to other sectors as well. The other two by-products, electrolyte and separators, do not still reach, through a viable and effective regeneration process, a quality standard sufficient for their re-use in the lead batteries sector ."

This study data has been collected on a three-month period from November 2020 to January 2021 and based on three different pits: Vindaloo Main, Vindaloo Central and Bouere. Both pits having specific geotechnical and geological properties. Vindaloo Main, VIM, and Central, VIC, have the same mineral composition as volcanic tuff with felsic intrusion or monzodiorite, both rock mass is fractured with small joint. Geotechnically the uniaxial compressive strength UCS between 200 to 300 Mpa, Young’s Modulus 110 Gpa and Poisson’s ratio between 0.1 to 0.2. Bouere pit is basically made of volcanic tuff stock works as intrusive, UCS between 200 to 300 Mpa, Young’s Modulus 103 Gpa and Poisson’s ratio between 0.2 to 0.3. The first step of this study was to collect various data from mining operations around the drilling and blasting inputs. This was based around the different scenario of drilling parameters and the outcomes on the blasting, and how they impact load and haul operations and productivities of excavators from the heave to the last flitch. In most cases surface photos of the blast do not represent the overall fragmentation in the blast volume. Photos of the different flitches will not show only the effect of blast, as the loading operation generating more fragmentation by applying weight on the muck pile. Then the record of the different material uses for feeding. The last part of the analysis is the physical data from process plant such as particle size, throughput rate, both for the crusher and the mill, per pit and material and the specific Bond Work index (BWI). Fine particle quantity production is also a key point as is one direct indicator of milling performance. In overall, making link to BWI can influence at each stage of the mining to the processing operation. Drill and blast constitute a high cost in hard rock mining and trying to reduce these costs without an overview of all the integrated processes and context could end up by cost relocating to other activities in the process. However, the cost associated to size reduction builds exponentially as the particle size becomes smaller.

During the investigations of the occurrence of manganese in the Western United States, a Bureau of Mines examining engineer collected samples frame two properties in Beaver County, Utah. As the ores were too low in grade to be acceptable by manufacturers of ferromanganese, beneficiation studies were made to determine the amenability of the ores to concentration. The Steelville property is about 37 miles southwest of Frisco, Utah. The deposit is an example of manganese occurring as a replacement of limestone in a bedded vein or as layers in limestone associated with shale and rock decomposition products. The Susie Q deposit, about 33 miles southwest of Milford, Utah, is also a tabular replacement deposit in limestone, apparently of limited extent. Test work was done on representative samples of 2-ton lots obtained by the examining 'engineer from each of the properties mentioned.

"The Soviet Union has enormous reserves of iron ore in many different kinds of deposits that are widely distributed in this vast land area. The present iron ore industry is based mainly on deposits in Precambrian cherty iron-formation at Krivoy Rog, Kursk and Murmansk. Extensive reserves of both naturally enriched hematite ore and magnetite iron-formation in these areas alone could sup-ply all the domestic ore required for several hundred years.Many contact metasomatic magnetite deposits discovery in recent years in the eastern Ural Mountain belt and east of the Kusnetsov basin in Siberia are being developed, with ore reserves measured in billions of tons. Oolitic limonite-chamosite-siderite ores of Cretaceous and younger age at Kerch on the Black Sea and around the east and southern perimeter of the West Siberian basin constitute some of the largest concentrations of iron in the world. These sedimentary ores are low grade, of poor quality and difficult to beneficiate. Banded jasper magnetite and hematite iron-formation in volcanic rocks of Devonian age in Kazakhstan and along the Mongolian border are of special geoloica1 significance.Iron deposits in the Krivoy Rog and Kursk areas were examined and a large number of geologists discussed their work on deposits in many other parts of the Soviet Union during the writer's seven-week study tour of mines and research institutes in Moscow, Leningrad, Novosibirsk in Siberia and Kiev in the Ukraine. The descriptive geology of iron deposits of useable ore and of marginal material has been well documented in the course of systematic work and a large number of scientists are studying fundamental problems on the origin and treatment of iron ore."

In the early fall of 1925, the writer was conducting, in the Ledoux and Co. laboratory, New York, experiments directed toward ascertaining the effect on its impurity content when cathode copper was subjected to a current of various gases at an elevated temperature below the melting point. The apparatus consisted of a vertical I-in. dia. silica tube about 12 in. long, heated on the outside. The cathodes were broken to pass 3/8-in. mesh, and a current of various different gases was passed up through a 4-in. long column of these loose cathode particles in the vertical tube furnace. Temperature was maintained to 1500º to 1600ºF. and the gas treatments lasted from 3 to 6 hr. The writer observed that whenever reducing gas (H2 or CO) was used, these cathode particles stuck together at points of contact with each other. The cohesion was so marked and tenacious that an examination was made of the fractured surfaces, when cathode particles were broken from the cluster. Crystal growth was always found to have taken place across the surfaces where separate particles were in contact, but only after all oxides, sulphates, etc., had been completely removed. The idea of a possible new process was then conceived and was disclosed to A. M. Smoot (V. P. Ledoux and Co.) with intent to obtain his views. The first conception as given Smoot was "to gas-clean broken cathodes, put them in an extrusion press, solidify and extrude them at around 1500ºF." Smoot's reaction, after a few moments considera- tion, was, "It looks perfectly all right to me.'' The writer and his assistants, W. H. Osborn and H. H. Stout, Jr., after conferring as to ways and means, decided to go ahead with preliminary laboratory experiments, which, it was thought, would move the new process from the possible to the probable. This program followed a course indicated by three basic considerations: 1. Since brittle cathodes were often unintentionally produced, it seemed probable that the laws controlling this type of deposition could be ascertained. 2. We had already proved the gas-cleaning feature. 3. There remained to prove: whether a sound, homogeneous metal billet could be produced with crystal growth established over the entire surface of each individual particle in the billet; and, if so, what would be the physical properties? Osborn arranged with Columbia University for conducting experiments in its research laboratory to prove or disprove the third item; Columbia assigned C. A. Phillipi, Jr. to assist in the project. A press with a cylinder 2 in. high and of I-in. dia. was used. It was surrouilded and heated by a resistance coil 01 Nichrome wire. Broken tough cathodes were used. Experimental Procedure The first run took place March 18, 1926. The resistance wire gave out when temperature of 1000ºF. was obtained. This paper presents a discussion of the factors affecting copper scrap markets, including such items as price levels, freight. grades of material, sources and packaging. Reference will also be made to the effective life and turn-around of the copper content of some products. Introduction IN TERMS OF SIZE, copper scrap is second only to ferrous scrap in tonnage recycled. However, in total value, it is second to none. For example, world scrap recovery during the preceding 4 years averaged just under 2,300,000 metric tons per annum, and at an average price of 70 ¢ a pound, this works out at a turnover of about $3.5 billion, which indicates that the copper scrap industry, or recycling as it is now becoming known , is a substantial one.

UehlinG, New York City (communication to the Secretary*):—Mr. Baker's paper is one that brings up a subject of great importance, and if full statistics could be collectecl of the number of furnace-linings ruined by reason of bad distribution by skip-hoists, it would be found an astonishing array. Unfortunately a universal remedy has not yet been found. The fact that Mr. Baker has apparently succeeded in overcoming the trouble at Sydney, is no guarantee that the same remedy applied at another plant, where very different or even slightly different conditions prevail, mould cure the trouble. That it requires but a slight continuous difference of penetrability in the column of the descending stock of one section, over another, to produce channeling, is clearly demonstrated by Mr. Baker's experiments, by which he reversed the channeling from front to rear instead of remedying the trouble. Every change in the physical make-up of the charge necessarily requires a specific adjustment; even supposing this feasible, the regular working of the furnace is by no means assured, because with the high pressures now customary, the tendency of the ascending gases to plow their way through in a direct course, prevails, and having once opened up a passage, they will persist and cause trouble. Based on the analysis of a sealed coal mine resulting from a fire-triggered explosion, limitations were discovered in the re-entry procedures used to reduce the size of the sealed area that were being applied during the process of re-opening the mine. The analysis of two re-opening plans in a mine using mechanical ventilation showed that the estimation of the degree of damage of two air doors close to the working face with the fire was key to the identification of the optimum mine recovery plan. The operation points of airflow and air pressure of the main fan under either the doors? damaged or intact conditions can be estimated through the use of a ventilation network simulation program. Starting the main fan for a short time period and measuring its operation points of airflow and air pressure allowed their comparison with the simulated values. This procedure provided a reasonable estimation of the degree of damage of the ventilation structures and more confidence in choosing a recovery plan. Through this process, it was possible to conclude that the two doors were still intact. Consequently, the final plan of installing a new main fan in the main decline, sealing the initial upcast shaft and unsealing the auxiliary downcast shaft, was proven to be reasonable at the mine site.

A variety of dynamic failure cases with regional impact were described at a bump symposium held in 1958. These types of events, while rare, are of particular interest because their ability to impact a large area has disaster potential. These cases can be grouped into two broad classes of events by mechanism. These are (1) a slip along steeply dipping faults and (2) the fracturing of strong strata above or below the coal seam. Both failure modes produce dynamic or “shock” loads on the perimeter (roof, rib and floor) of mine openings. Special consideration should be given to these failure modes in the planning of deep coal mines, since their occurrence is not within the professional experience of many contemporary workers. In addition, their potential is not evaluated by many of the analysis tools commonly used to evaluate hazards in coal mine plans.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the effect of refractory oxide additions, introduced in soluble form, on the high-temperature properties of 90- and 98-pct-MgO brick. Brick samples were soaked in solutions containing Al, Ca, Cr, Co, Fe, Mg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Si, Sr, Sn, Ti, or Zr ions. Additions to 98-pct-MgO brick did not generally result in statistically significant property improvements. Statistically significant improvements were noted in hot modulus of rupture (MOR), slag resistance, and spalling resistance of the 90-pct-MgO brick for additions of Al, Mg, or Sn. High-temperature performance of treated 90-pct-MgO refractories was equal to or approached that of 98-pct-MgO brick. The marked improvements due to tin were obtained with additions of only 1.14 wt pct Sn02.

As an integral part of the investigation of critical and essential minerals in Alaska , the Bureau of Mines examined the lead deposits in the Slana area . Four examinations were made during June , July, and August 1945 in the 200 - square -mile area immediately northwest of Slana . The settlement of Slana lies near the conflux of the small Slana River with the mighty Copper River less than 60 miles southwest of Tek Junction on the Alaska Highway . Travel through the area and the examination of the properties were conducted by a three-man crew consisting of the author , a caterpillar operator , and a laborer . An RD6 caterpillar , equipped with blade and winch , was used in breaking trail and freighting through the country . Supplies and equipment were loaded on a 7- by 14 -foot , double - end , go -devil , which was hauled by the tractor .

The U.S. Bureau of Mines applied its mine fire diagnostic method to an abandoned anthracite mine fire site in Carbondale, Lackawanna County, P A. The technique to locate fires in abandoned coal mines and coal refuse piles includes the determination of hydrocarbon concentrations in mine gases, the imposition of an underground gas flow direction, and use of a surface mapping method, to define heated and cold zones in underground coal strata. The heated zones at Carbondale were characterized by elevated methane concentrations. The results of 25 communication tests were analyzed to define 2 large (approximately 100 by 250 ft) and 5 small, isolated heated zones. An approximate correlation existed between the location of the heated zones and areas of anomalous snow melt. The correlation between the results of the diagnostic? test and subsurface temperatures was not significant.
