Laboratory testing has shown that the Marsh Funnel test can be significantly impacted by long-chain polymer entanglement. In general, shorter hydration time leads to more chain entanglement which in-turn, leads to higher marsh funnel values that values seen for longer mixing. This trend makes it very difficult to predict funnel-viscosity on successive days. Data is presented which helps to explain this chain interaction effect on Marsh Funnel data and how it differs from traditional Fann viscosity. The data suggest that this long-chain polymer entanglement occurs more in samples with less hydration time and decreases as hydration time increases. There is also suggestion that higher polymer concentrations have a greater drop-off in marsh funnel viscosity for a given aging length than do lower solids slurries. Fann rheology was shown to be much less impacted by the hydration time of the PHPA polymers than was Marsh Funnel viscosity. This suggests that the Marsh Funnel viscosity is impacted by some aspect of the slurry that does not affect Fann rheology as strongly. It is known from literature that longer-chained polymers have more potential to entangle and our data support the theory that the Marsh funnel viscosity is greatly impacted by this polymer-chain ‘roping’ entanglement.

In the present study infrared attenuated total reflection (IR-ATR) was used to monitor the rate of in situ adsorption of heptyl xanthate on a layer of zinc sulfide synthesised on a germanium ATR crystal. The zinc sulfide surface was characterised using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The absorbance of heptyl xanthate measured increased with increasing bulk concentration of the adsorbate up to an equilibrium plateau value corresponding to a fractional coverage of the surface sites of the substrate. For the adsorption from solutions of concentrations between 10-3 and 10-5 M, the rate of adsorption increased with increasing bulk concentration. At higher concentrations the measured absorbance should be corrected for the absorbance due to the concentration of xanthate in bulk solution. The present work provides a discussion of this correction. Assuming the adsorption stage to be rate-controlling and proportional both to the concentration of the adsorbing species in solution and unreacted surface area, a rate law governing this type of transient adsorption kinetics was derived. By means of absorbance data for the concentrations 0.1 and 0.01 mM, the rate constant of adsorption was calculated. From the initial part of a Langmuir adsorption isotherm, the absorbance at monolayer coverage and the equilibrium constant of adsorption could be estimated.

ON Oct. 9, 1929, a sink formed in the Sour Lake salt dome oil field in Texas, and on Oct. 12 a second smaller sink formed at the north margin of the first. The purpose of this paper is to give such observations as it has been possible to make on the earth movement incident to this subsidence. Sour Lake salt dome is typical of the salt domes of the Gulf Coastal Plain of Texas. Structurally the dome is a plug of salt which rises to within 900 ft. or less of the surface. Above the salt is a cap rock consisting of anhydrite with more or less calcium carbonate. The salt plug, as contoured on the cap rock, is circular in outline with, however, some appreciable irregularities. Overlying the cap rock are relatively uncompacted sediments consisting of sand, clay and gumbo.. At the crest of the dome these deposits are no more than 700 or 800 ft. thick. However, the sides of the dome are steep, and the sediments thicken rapidly away from the crest. The sink formed about 1500 ft. northeast of the crest of the dome where the sediments overlying the cap rock are from 1000 to 1200 ft. thick. The cavity permitting the subsidence was quite certainly either in the cap rock or in the salt below the cap rock, so that the sink was formed by the caving of as much as 1000 or 1200 ft. of earth.

A questionnaire was sent out to three classes of mines to determine the extent of the heat problem in U.S. and Foreign underground mines. The following list shows the replies received from this questionnaire, however not all the known hot mines in the US replied. A complete listing of the results can be seen in Appendix I. 1) US coal mines - 37 replies 2) US non coal mines - 23 replies 3) Foreign non coal mines - 36 replies. At the present time there are approximately eleven non coal and one coal mine in the US experiencing heat problems which require special efforts to maintain an acceptable working place climate. However since the survey was completed some of them have been placed on standby. The Mine Safety & Health Administration (MSHA) does not have any specific regulations relating to heat stress. Informally the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists guidelines are followed which use wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) with values ranging from 26.7°C to 31.1°C for a moderate workload, and different rest regimes. An MSHA report (Misaqi 1976) recommended that conditions should not exceed 26.1°C WBGT for men and 24.4°C WBGT for women. However, quite recently the organizations involved with planning two of the proposed nuclear waste repositories in the United States, have opted for the criteria of an air cooling power of 300 w/m2, and a WBGT of 27'C respectively.

Ore and waste haulage usually constitute one of the major cost items in the operation of an open pit mine. This has always been true at the Chino mine, one of Kennecott Copper Corporation's western mines, located in southwestern New Mexico. The Chino Mines Division is an integrated operation. The open pit mine, dump leaching operation, and a precipitating plant are located at Santa Rita, New Mexico, and a power plant, mill, smelter, and fire refinery are located in Hurley, New Mexico, about nine miles south of the mine. Approximately 22,000 tons of ore are mined and processed each day; in addition, approximately 42,000 tons of waste are removed from the pit. Originally the pit was located along the side of Santa Rita Creek but it has deepened and expanded so that at the present time, it could better be described as a nearly circular pit about one to 1.5 miles in diameter. The bottom is at an elevation of 5750 feet, the west rim near the ore gathering yard is at an elevation of 6230 feet, and the highest bench on the east side of the pit is at an elevation of 6750 feet, giving a vertical mining depth of 1000 feet. The train waste dumps reach a maximum elevation of 6580 feet. At the present time, Chino uses electric locomotives, off-the- highway trucks, and a skip system for mine haulage.

"Bubbles play a very important role in different metallurgical applications like for example in electrowinning. During heterogeneous nucleation, the maximal size of the bubbles growing at the nucleation sites as well as the nucleation frequency is determined by the so-called detachment condition. Detachment occurs when the external forces acting on the bubble exceed the retaining forces along the solid-gas-liquid triple interface line. The phenomenon depends strongly on the shape and orientation of the solid surface and on the nature and strength of the external buoyancy and drag forces. In the present study the detachment conditions of bubbles from downward facing horizontal and inclined plates were studied experimentally under the effect of gravitational and hydrodynamic forces. The results show the deformation of the bubbles under the effect of the external forces and the detachment conditions as function of the bubble volume.IntroductionIn heterogeneous nucleation bubbles are generated at the so-called nucleation sites along the solid-liquid interfaces. They continue to grow there and after they reached a certain size they detach from the solid surface and leave the nucleation site. This scenario is well known both in boiling and electrolysis. During the growth period a stable equilibrium exists between the forces that retain the bubble at the nucleation site and the forces that try to remove it. This equilibrium evolves with the increasing volume of the bubble to the point when the detachment forces overcome the retaining forces.The life of a single bubble generated by heterogeneous nucleation can be divided into two periods separated by the detachment - or in other words by the departure - of the bubble: first the growth at the nucleation site and then the movement away. The knowledge of the detachment conditions makes possible the determination of the maximal volume of the bubble at the nucleation site that, in tum, makes possible the determination of the nucleation frequency. This is why so many researches have been directed toward the clarification of the details of the bubble detachment in the past decades. The equilibrium between the attaching and separating forces depend on the presence of body, surface and flow induced forces in the liquid, on the geometry and orientation of solid surface, on the properties of the solid-liquidgas system etc."

"The 13.2 m (43 ft) external diameter, double deck Istanbul Strait Road Tube Crossing is one of the most challenging underwater tunnel projects in the world. Subjected to 11 bars of hydrostatic pressure, variable geology, and being in a very active seismic area, the execution of the project required innovative solutions, sophisticated construction techniques and prudent risk management approach. The 5 km (3.1 mile) tunnel consists of a 3.4-km (2.2-mile) tunnel boring machine- (TBM) bored tunnel, 1 km (0.62 mile) twin NATM tunnels and cut-and-cover sections. The project is being delivered in a build-operate-transfer (BOT) contract in a public-private partnership. The technical challenges, coupled with financial and commercial risks required the implementation of sophisticated risk management tactics including the provision of independent design verification. The project was opened to traffic on December 20, 2016, four months ahead of schedule.. This article presents the technical challenges of the project from the design, construction, and risk management aspects..Project backgroundThe $1.245 billion Istanbul Strait Road Tunnel Crossing project, dubbed the Eurasia Tunnel, is one of several major infrastructure projects being implemented in the Republic of Turkey in a public-private partnership approach. The project provides a direct and easy connection between the Anatolian (Asian) side of Istanbul and the heart of its historical district on the European side across the Bosphorus Strait which connects the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara. The project improves connections to a wide network of motorways on both sides, increase capacity across the Bosphorus by 100,000 vehicles a day, reduces congestion and saves motorists an average of 45 minutes of commuting time in each direction bringing significant economic benefits to the city and the region. It eases traffic across the strait, reduces congestion, decreases pollutants and emission while maintaining Bosphorus. It is the most complex part of the project with the greatest challenges and risks. Part 2 is 5.4 km (3.6 miles) long consisting of 3.4 km (2.2 miles) of 13.2 m ( 43.3 ft) external diameter TBM bored tunnel under the Bosphorus Strait, 1-km (0.62-miles) of twin NATM tunnels on the Asian side, cut-and-cover transition boxes in the Asian and the European sides and depressed approaches on both sides. In addition, this segment includes the toll plazas, ventilation buildings, and the tunnel control and maintenance facilities."

In the mining industry, rock blasting can be considered as the first phase of comminution. The downstream phases of comminution are mechanical, and consist in consecutive stages of crushing and milling for grain size reduction. The total energy of mechanical comminution depends on grain size and on the resistance of the material to grindability. Usually, the first is quantified by the grain size distribution or one of its KPIs (such as the diameters X50 or X80), while the latter by the working index (WI), representing the amount of energy necessary to reduce the size of grains of a determined amount of material to the desired equivalent diameter (usually expressed in kilowatt hours per tonne – kWh/t). It is widely recognised that it is possible to manage the output of a blast in terms of grain size distribution varying specific charge (powder factor – PF) and charge distribution; specific algorithms such as the KUZ-RAM or the SWEBREC have been created to predict such output. It has also been demonstrated how higher PFs weaken the blasted material by creating micro-fractures that reduce its WI. This paper focuses on a related aspect: the influence of charge distribution on the specific comminution energy in crushing and milling. Small-scale blasts have been performed on 14 marble blocks with different PFs and charge distribution. For every PF, charges have been designed to simulate concentrated and distributed geometries. Concentrated charges simulate opencast blasts with large-diameter holes, with large burdens and spacings. Distributed charges simulate bench blasts with small-diameter holes and reduced burden and spacing. Three control blocks have been fragmented by mechanical means for comparison. For every sample the grain size distribution and the WI in ball mill has been determined. Results show the correlations between charge distributions and the specific energy of mechanical comminution in milling. Uniaxial Compressive Strength (UCS) of rocks is an important mechanical parameter for many civil engineering and rock engineering applications such as tunnel excavation, slope stability and foundation design. Macau is one of the world's fastest growing and most densely populated cities, many large and important infrastructures have been being continuously built using pile foundations which are designed to be supported by granitic bedrock. In Macau, the UCS of the granitic bedrock is required almost for every project involving pile foundations and is always measured directly from UCS test in the laboratory. However, direct measurement of UCS requires high quality rock core sample which is not only time-consuming and expensive but also requires high level of operating skill. In view of this fact, estimation of UCS using some empirical correlations will be more practical and efficient because they are relatively fast and economical compared to the direct measurement from UCS test. In the past, some empirical correlations had been established and widely used for estimating UCS of rocks in common engineering practice. However, it has been well recognized that the rock properties are generally varied with sites or geological regions in other words an empirical correlation developed from one region or one country may not be applicable for other regions or countries. Due to the reason that the empirical correlations for predicting UCS for granite are scarce in practice, in this study an extensive experimental program has been performed and a large database containing data such as UCS, Point Load Index (Is50), Schmidt Rebound Hardness (RL), porosity (?), water absorption (S), specific gravity (Gs) and dry density (?d) has been developed. An attempt has been made for developing a new empirical correlation for estimating the UCS of Macau granite. Accordingly, a comprehensive statistical analysis for correlating UCS with Is50, RL, ?, S, Gs and ?d has been performed and a local empirical relationship based on the developed database is proposed for obtaining reliable estimation of UCS for the granite of Macau. Finally, the performance of the proposed correlation is accessed by using another independent testing database developed in this study. It indicates that Is50, RL, ? and S have strong correlation with UCS whereas Gs, ?d have poor correlation with UCS. This study not only proposed a proper predictive empirical correlation for UCS determination for Macau granite but also provides detailed statistical information which is beneficial to engineers for obtaining better characterization of Macau granite.

The western coast of South Africa hosts a significant diamond resource within gravels associated with paleo-shorelines, channels and transgressive lag deposits. Diamonds were transported from the Kaapvaal Craton to the coast largely during the late Cretaceous via the paleo-Orange river systems. On shore and near shore environments are underlain by Proterozoic metamorphic and granitic rocks which provide gully and pot hole-type traps associated with paleo-channels, basins, bays and beaches. Inner and mid-shelf environments are covered by diamondiferous, poorly lithified upper Cretaceous and Tertiary sediments. The upper Cretaceous gravels were reworked along the sediment-starved coast during much of the Tertiary. Reworking was mainly achieved during marine flooding events which produced lag gravels along the paleo-shorelines. This process reworked the diamonds from low-grade Cretaceous gravels and concentrated them in higher-grade Tertiary gravels.

"The research aimed at solving the problem of the stacked spent magnesia-chrome refractories using in non-ferrous metal smelters, which contain various heavy metals and are considered as a hazardous waste. The purpose of the research is to recycle the spent refractories environmentally and economically using gravity separation and flotation to obtain metal concentrates for smelting and using chloridizing volatilization to remove the trace metals from tailings, providing raw material to reprocess magnesia-chrome refractories. In the course of the study, laboratory techniques for the preparation of experimental samples of spent magnesia-chrome refractories were developed including the sequence of operations of material grinding, gravity separation, tails regrinding, flotation, filtration and subsequent unification of concentrates, filtration and chloridizing volatilization of tails, and collection of volatiles. Laboratory tests carried out on several types of samples of spent magnesia-chrome refractories from different smelters showed that gravity separation provided increase in quality of concentrates including about 80% metals (including Ag, Pb, Bi) and flotation separation provided increase in recovery of concentrates under the condition of 200g/t of emulsified kerosene, and 500g/t of combined collector. Based on combined technology of gravity and flotation separation, about 90% metals were recovered from the refractories by a closed-circuit test and the total concentrates contained 40% metals, which can be returned to smelting process as a feeding. Because a small amount of metal in raw materials will seriously affect the performance of refractories, chloridizing volatilization is necessary for removing the remaining 10% metals from tails mixed 8% coke and 13% magnesium chloride at a temperature of 1200°C. Thus, the tailings can be reused as a raw material for new refractories.INTRODUCTION Magnesia-chrome refractory has been used extensively in various industries such as secondary metallurgy, non-ferrous furnaces and cement making due to their high temperature stability, low thermal expansion and outstanding erosion-corrosion performance at high temperatures (Gotod et al., 2005; Vezza et al., 1997; Gregurek et al., 2015). Generally, the magnesia-chrome refractories are produced from a mixture of magnesia and massive variety of chrome ores. However, massive chrome ores are being depleted throughout the world. Even more serious is that the heavy metal chromium (Cr) can transfer into soil and water, which will have an influence on the survival and development of human beings (Zhao et al., 2006; Jiang et al., 2004; Qintie et al., 2013). As a result, regulations treating spent magnesia-chrome refractories as potentially hazardous waste are being enforced, making their disposal difficult and expensive."

Bacteria, algae and fungi react to heavy metals in their environment by immobilizing, mobilizing and/or transforming metals. Microorganisms carry out these changes by (1) precipitating metals outside of the microbial cell, (2) binding and complexing metals to the outside of the microbial cell's protective coating, (3) accumulating metals inside of the microbial cell, or (4) transforming metals by oxidation, reduction, methylation or demethylation. Most of these mechanisms are operative in constructed aerobic and anaerobic wetlands for metal's remediation. Several more advanced biotechnologies for metal's removal from aqueous streams have been introduced, but have not been widely accepted commercially.

"The Efemçukuru underground mine in western Turkey is an intermediate sulfidation, epithermal gold deposit. The bulk of the mineral resources and all of the mineral reserves lie within the Kestanebeleni (KB) vein system. This system comprises four spatially-distinct mineralised zones: the south ore shoot (SOS), the middle ore shoot (MOS), the north ore shoot (NOS) and the KB north-west ore shoot. Production currently occurs only in the SOS, MOS and NOS zones. The gold mineralisation is very fine grained and occurs as free grains in quartz and carbonate, and as inclusions in sulfide minerals. Gold is recovered as part of a sulfide concentrate by flotation methods. Though hosted in the KB vein, the gold mineralisation is not evenly distributed within the veins. Definition of its occurrence is totally dependent on diamond drilling.Diamond drilling at Efemçukuru is done with its own equipment and staff, all managed by the mine geology group. The process over the mine’s six year production history incorporates continual improvement with an innovative approach by focusing on the following: drill team organisation career development and training product research and effective equipment management cost reduction planning and scheduling of development for drill stations.Over 40 000 metres of mostly BQ size core are drilled annually by three drill rigs at a cost approaching US$35/m.The planning and execution of the drilling pattern depends on the configuration of the ore shoot and the planned mining method. Ore extraction is mainly by drift and fill mining augmented by about 15 per cent longhole stoping. The drilling of a specific area is scheduled to be finished 3 to 8 months prior to mining. "The Jaguar concentrator, 60 km north of Leonora, Western Australia (WA), consists of a standard closed circuit semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) and ball mill producing a float feed of approximately 60 micron at 70 t/h. Following comminution, separate copper and zinc concentrates are produced by differential flotation. These concentrates are subsequently dewatered by thickening and then filtration.Separate audits of the Jaguar Operation’s copper and zinc concentrate thickeners were conducted to evaluate their performance, following occasions where site personnel had identified unnecessary loss of copper and zinc concentrate to the thickener overflow. The feedwells were identified as the source of the observed problems due to the following issues with their design/duty:lack of retention time in the feedwell as current design is completely opennot conducive to effective mixing required for efficient flocculationdiameter of the zinc concentrate thickener feedwell was undersize for its duty.To improve the performance of the thickeners, it is planned to replace both concentrate thickener feedwells with a high rate design for their respective duties in February 2016. The audits also identified that the feed system requires modifications with particular importance placed on minimising air entrainment of slurry into the thickener feedwell. Minimisation of air entrainment is hoped to be achieved by providing constant head pressure through installation of weir arrangements in the feedboxes and redirecting each feed pipe so that it feeds tangentially into the feedwell. In addition, improvements to the control philosophy of both thickeners will be made with the installation of an ultrasonic bed level probe and bed mass sensor, in order to make real-time adjustments to the underflow pump speed to maintain steady state operation.Following the feedwell replacement and modifications to both thickeners it is expected that losses of recovered copper and zinc will decrease to undetectable levels. Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) are widely used for tunneling in urban areas because of their high advance rate, precise as-built profile and minimal impact to buildings and traffic on the ground. For a tunnel built by a TBM, there are strict requirements on alignment control and safety. To meet these requirements, it is important to monitor the position of the TBM. In the current practice, the TBM position data, including advance distance and line and level deviations, are reported manually to the managers on a daily basis. To interpret and analyze the position data, the managers also need to refer to various construction drawings. This practice is untimely, inefficient, and error prone for decision making. To improve the current practice, an automatic approach for real-time as-built tunnel product modeling and visualization is proposed, based on TBM position and orientation data autonomously sourced from the Virtual Laser Target Board (VLTB) TBM Guidance System developed at University of Alberta. Related information of the tunnel project, such as the as-designed alignment, soil layers, the ground, existing utility lines, is also visualized together with the model of the as-built tunnel. The modeling algorithm is presented step by step. Its application in a real-life drainage tunnel project is discussed and limitations are also identified.

"Efficient flocculation is important to thickener performance, affecting the overflow clarity, solids settling flux, underflow density and operability. Many factors affect flocculation; from the material/flocculant type, dilution of the feed and flocculant solution, mixing, to the shear rate and shear history. The flocculant addition point (or points) can be used as a tuning method to alter the effective flocculation time in a feedwell, with addition further up the feed pipe increasing the residence time but making the aggregates more prone to breakup if they experience high shear later in the process. Conversely, adding the flocculant later, eg under the feedwell shelf decreases the mixing time but allows some free (unadsorbed) flocculant to be available at the feedwell exit. An extensive trial has been performed on an operating thickener comparing seven individual different flocculant dosing positions through a Vane feedwell, and some combinations of two dosing points simultaneously. Measurements of the velocity, solids concentration and aggregate size were made throughout the feedwell at the different positions, with the dosing points significantly changing the aggregate size and clarity, and also affecting the solids concentration at some positions. The results are accessed in terms of flocculation kinetics and used as CFD validation data."

Dynamic soil analysis (DSA) in geotechnical practice is intimately related to the capability of measuring the necessary soil properties of shear modulus and absorption. In DSA the methods of analysis are based upon the stress-deformation response of soils due to imposed shear strains. Typically the soil profile is numerically modeled as linear visco-elastic system. This technique is referred to as the Equivalent Linear (EL) method, and it requires the specification of the input parameters of low-strain (<10-5) shear modulus, modulus reduction, and the equivalent viscous damping ratio, which is directly related to the soil absorption value. Downhole seismic testing (DST) has proven to be a very accurate tool for estimating low strain shear modulus values as long as source wave raypaths are taken into account, especially for near-surface investigations. DST has also been utilized to estimate low-strain interval absorption values. In these cases standard frequency domain absorption estimation algorithms (such as the spectral ratio technique) are utilized where it is assumed that the source waves are traveling along the same travel path, which is obviously not the case for near surface DST investigations. The Australian longwall mining industry spends millions of dollars per year on proactive and reactive ground consolidation applications across most of the operations currently in production. The design and effectiveness of the applications and products vary widely and are based predominantly on-site precedence or what were considered successful applications at other sites in similar situations. In the continual improve the effectiveness of how consolidation products are used and when by enhancing our knowledge of the mechanical properties of products used in underground coal applications and applying this increased understanding to geotechnical design. One of the current challenges to further developing more appropriate and accurate geotechnical design methods for consolidation activities is the lack of standardised materials testing and knowledge of rock mechanics data on in situ performance. Recognising that the speed at which a mixed product develops its desired properties to act as a support element in underground coal mines is critical to its serviceability. This paper presents the testing rationale proposed, the testing results, and a framework for how the data set can be used to improve the engineering basis for ground consolidation design, in terms of expected rockmass performance under various mining conditions and application parameters.

Low density explosives have been available in various forms for nearly 20 years. These initially consisted of various diluted forms of ANFO formulated to slow the rate of reaction. One such product that was developed was a blend of ammonium nitrate and rubber. This product uses a coarse fuel provided by granulated rubber to slow the reaction rate of the explosive rather than being a diluted form of ANFO. There has always been a technical difficulty in blending two dissimilar materials without subsequent segregation.
