Through laboratory and underground studies, the Bureau of Mines has evaluated the use of passive barriers (dust shields) to help confine dust generated by longwall shearers to the face area. Laboratory studies focused first on selection of the optimum barrier design, which proved to be a simple, gobside barrier (made of conveyor belting), coupled with a headgate splitter arm, which was found necessary to prevent the dust cloud from entering the walkway at the headgate end of the shearer when cutting tail to head. Further laboratory testing was done to determine whether using passive barriers in combination with different water-spray dust-reduction methods, including the shearer-clearer system developed by the Bureau, would improve dust reduction over that from using the water sprays alone. It was found that the combination of gobs ide passive barriers plus the full shearer-clearer system was most effective, and surmised that this would be especially useful in thicker seams. However, underground testing revealed that the shearer-clearer system alone was 35 pct more effective in reducing dust contamination than when used with the gobside passive barriers, and far more effective than using passive barriers with a conventional water spray system. For such an effective system as the shearer-clearer; the reduction in avail-able space over the top of the machine actually impeded system performance; this was shom1 in both eastern and western mines. But when used with comparatively inefficient water spray systems, the passive barriers, used in combination with a headgate splitter arm, provide consider-able help in reducing dust levels in the walkway.

Adsorption of sulfide collectors such as xanthate on pyrite has been studied extensively over several decades using a wide variety of techniques. In spite of this, there are unanswered questions as to the identity of adsorbed species on pyrite surfaces -dixanthogen vs. iron xanthate complexes. Far less is known in non-xanthate collector systems. We have used Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (SIMS) successfully in the past to obtain direct evidence for the identity of the adsorbed collector species on copper sulfides, galena and Cu-activated quartz. The present study is an extension of the SIMS analysis to investigate the adsorption of xanthate, dithiovhosphate, dithiocarbamate, and modified thionocarbamates and thioureas on pyrite. Adsorption of these collectors on chalcocite was also studied for comparison. An attempt was also made to obtain SIMS spectra for pure dixanthogens at room temperature. Only in the case of dithiocarbamate (DTC) was there direct evidence for the presence of not only the collector dimer, but also iron-DTC complexes. On chalcocite, only the copper-DTC complexes were detected (no dimer). In the case of xanthate, the collector molecular ion and its S adduct -which are possible fragments from dixanthogen -were detected on pyrite, along with a fragment peak: suggesting Fe2X. For dithiophosphate, the collector molecular ion and Fe(DTP)(OH) complex were detected (no dimer). For modified thionocarbamate and thiourea, adsorption on pyrite was negligible.

Mechanical sampling from conveyors has historically been a staple in the iron ore industry when information related to chemistry, sizing and moisture is required. In order to comply with ISO 3082:2009, samples can be taken either on a mass or time basis provided no bias is introduced by periodical variation in quality or quantity. With the introduction of mechanical sample carousels, you also have the opportunity to collect samples on a mass or time basis. In order to optimise automatic sample stations in a changing production environment, BHP Billiton Iron Ore (BHPBIO) has developed a simulation model that enables the various combinations of mass–mass, mass–time, time–time and time–mass to be investigated.The sample station model can utilise actual (variable) feed rates to achieve high resolution and enables the simulation of sample size variation. Cutter speeds and other settings can then be adjusted to better optimise the performance of the sample station with regards to optimal sample size as well as ensuring the sample station is in compliance with ISO 3082. The model can also assist process engineers in adjusting settings to better optimise the sample station and reduce unwanted events such as blockages. The model can be easily modified to conform to various sample station designs. "In the past decade, increased processing capacity combined with precision robotics in high resolution spectrometers has resulted in a new generation of high-speed hyperspectral core logging systems. The application of these multisensor automated platforms provides a key advancement in the characterisation of metal resources. The development of this technology has allowed for comprehensive, drill core-based, mine-scale rock mass characterisation studies. Here we propose a new method for the extraction of parameters that seek to more accurately quantify ground conditions, including quantified rock mass rating (RMR) and the Rock Tunnelling Quality (Q) Index. Data inputs include rock quality designation (RQD), number of joint sets, joint roughness, joint alteration and joint spacing. Geologists and geotechnical engineers have historically collected these inputs by manually logging drill core. With automated core scanning technologies, these parameters can be estimated from the acquired image data and used to objectively calculate RMR and Q-index values for oriented core.Corescan is an automated hyperspectral core scanner that uses a 3D laser profiling system to measure the height of the surface of drill core. This technology allows for rapid core analysis to produce detailed fracture and rock condition data. Through an integrated geometallurgical approach, the proposed methodology will test the accuracy of joint measurement using the height profile Corescan data from oriented drill core. This will be combined with joint roughness and alteration mineralogy measured from the hyperspectral images to calculate the RMR and the Q-index continuously downhole. The values obtained can then be compared to the traditional, manual geotechnical log data. If the precision is sufficient, these techniques can then be applied site-wide to automate the collection and modelling of key ground condition classification indices across an entire deposit. Compared to the laborious manual geotechnical logging procedures that currently form the industry standard, utilisation of core laser profile data and high resolution red-green-blue (RGB) images provide an opportunity to collect large volumes of consistent geotechnical data, which can increase the efficiency and accuracy of deposit scale geotechnical models.CITATION:Harraden, C L, Berry, R and Lett, J, 2016. Thank you Mr. Chairman. For more than 15 years a debate has been taking place among students of massive sulphide deposits as to the origin of these deposits. Prior that time it was widely accepted that the deposits were of hydrothermal, epigenetic and even replacement origin (Wilson, 14). Kinkel, Knight, Stanton and others advanced hypotheses which would explain the, formation of the deposits by different, largely syngenetic, volcanogeric processes. I was fortunate in having become involved in exploration for these deposits at about the time the debate was beginning and thus had an opportunity to apply with some success, some of the new and old ideas for formation of massive sulphide deposits. The deposits which I will discuss today are all located n northwestern Quebec, in the Abitibi orogenic belt. Mattagami Lake Mines is about 100 miles due south and Noranda's Horne Mine about 200 miles south of James Bay. In 1959 I prepared a talk which was presented to the 1960 CIM Convention calling attention to the spatial and possible genetic relationship between the ore sulphides of the Mattagami Area, Quebec and the tuffite, as well as the structures which controlled the ore. In this present paper I would like to cover the following points: (1) The general criteria used by the epigeneticists to support their contention that the deposits were formed after the enclosing rocks.

THE name engineer makes a very strong appeal to one who appreciates the mechanism underlying the fabric of our civilization. Engineers are scouts of civilization. We send them ahead into the lone 'places-the wilderness, the jungles, the great watery expanses, to build the highways necessary for civilized man. The engineers must deal with Nature, with that mysterious dynamic thing we call "force," with materials. It is their function to direct the human activity necessary to coordinate these forces and material in order to make them serve the needs and aspirations of men. Because of my high conception of the engineering profession I was glad to accept the invitation to address The American Society of Mechanical Engineers to voice my understanding of the possibilities of your work as engineers of industry, and to suggest what seems to me the responsibility of the-engineer to the whole modern industrial system.

"A qualitative and quantitative analysis of the new Al-Ca-Mn-Fe phase diagram in the region of the aluminium corner is carried out using both thermodynamic calculations and experimental methods. Using the obtained data, the principal possibility of creating both cast and wrought sparingly alloyed aluminium alloys with calcium, manganese, scandium and zirconium at allowable iron contents of up to 0.4% that do not require solution treatment and quenching is justified. At the selected concentrations, the entire amount of manganese (1%) is practically included in the aluminium matrix, while calcium (~2%) and iron are in the multiphase eutectic, which has a fine structure. The joint introduction of 0.25% Zr and 0.1% Sc into the alloy leads to precipitation hardening due to the formation of the L12-Al3(Zr,Sc) phase during annealing. Based on the experimental data for the model multicomponent Al2CaMnFeZrSc alloy, it is shown that such alloys can combine high mechanical properties and good manufacturability during both casting and metal forming. This is due to the combination of a narrow temperature range of solidification with a fine eutectic structure.INTRODUCTION Hardening in branded aluminium alloys (both cast and wrought) is generally achieved by heat treatment of the T6 type, including quenching and artificial aging (Zolotorevskiy, 2007; Kaufman, 2004; Mondolfo, 1976). Heat treatment significantly increases the cost of the final products. Therefore, industrial companies are interested in developing alloys that can be hardened to the desired level without quenching. To solve this problem, alloys with scandium are the most suitable (Toropova, 1998; RØyset, 2005). This element (usually in an amount of ~0.3%) is one of the most effective hardeners in aluminium alloys, due to the formation of Al3Sc (L12) phase secondary precipitates, the size of which is less than 10 nm (Knipling, 2010; Fuller, 2005). These nanoparticles are formed during the annealing via decomposition of the supersaturated aluminium solid solution (hereinafter referred to as (Al)). This feature allows us to significantly increase the strength of aluminium alloys by simple annealing (at ~300°C), i.e., without heat treatment, including quenching. However, scandium is a very expensive metal, so its use as an additive is severely limited. The most effective method is the introduction of scandium together with zirconium (Lefebvre, 2009; Booth-Morrison, 2012). The optimal combination is the introduction of ~0.1% Sc together with 0.20–0.25% Zr, which, according to (Belov, 2006), gives approximately the same strengthening effect as the introduction of 0.3% Sc."

Tailings are generally deposited on or near to the mine sites, occupying the site area, and being an economic burden for mining companies. Tailings can cause several environmental impacts, such as leaking toxic substances and contaminating underground water, emitting greenhouse gases, and damaging natural bodies and wildlife. Geopolymerisation of mine waste effectively transforms mine waste into more valuable, environmentally friendly products. Geopolymers are inorganic aluminosilicate materials that are widely applied in the construction industry (Araya, Kraslawski and Cisternas, 2020). The high performance and the low-CO2 emission of geopolymers make this type of material potentially more desirable than ordinary cement, given that manufacturing one ton of traditional cement generates approximately 0.8 tons of CO2. This process is seen as a promising method for repurposing tailings and reducing the environmental impact of mining waste. However, the environmental impact of geopolymer production is not sufficiently comprehended (Mazzinghy et al, 2022). Moreover, geopolymerisation of mine waste can offer several economic benefits, including reduced waste management costs (Amari et al, 2019; He et al, 2022), reduced raw material costs, and potentially lower production costs. However, there are several challenges that need to be addressed to ensure the economic feasibility of the process. This study aims to demonstrate the potential environmental impacts of geopolymer concrete produced using mine wastes and industrial by-products such as blast furnace slag (BFS). For this, a comparative cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology was conducted on different geopolymer mix designs, and the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions results were compared to the ordinary cement. LCA can be used to evaluate the environmental impact of geopolymerisation of mine wastes in various ways. One important impact category is GHG gas emissions, which contribute to climate change and is the focus of this study. Another aim of this study is to evaluate the economic feasibility of the geopolymerisation of mine wastes via economic analysis (EA) to identify the key economic factors and trade-offs associated with repurposing mine wastes through geopolymerisation.

Gold was recovered from scrap electronic 60-40 (tin-lead) solders by drossing with aluminum or zinc at elevated temperatures. The gold, together with other metallic impurities, collected in the dross phase which could then be separated from the molten solder by skimming or filtering. Drossing upgraded the gold concentration by a factor of 10. Further upgrading was achieved by a combination of steps including an oxidation roast and either a combined cyanidation-amalgamation treatment or an aqua regia leach. The gold was then recovered in highly concentrated form from the aqua regia or cyanide solutions by cementation and from the amalgam by volatilization or dissolution of the mercury. The solder was purified by reaction with NaOH to remove dissolved aluminum or with SnCl2 to remove dissolved zinc.

The phosphate ore sample was taken from the iron tailings after recovering most of magnetite by magnetic separation in Longlin, Yunnan Province of China. Batch flotation tests had been conducted to upgrade the phosphate concentrate by conventional fatty acids reagents under 70% -75 µm of the particle size; however, the unsatisfied results (P2O5 grade of 27.84% and recovery of 49.25%) were obtained. Also there are a large amount of slimes trapped in the concentrate and high-dosages consumption of reagents, for example, more than15 kg/t soda ash and 2 kg/t sodium silicate at only one-staged roughing. Based on the analysis of X-ray diffraction (XRD) for the sample, most of gangues are clay, quartz, and chlorite, which may easy to over-grind and deteriorate the flotation process either on reagents consumption or slurry fluidity or viscosity. A hydro-cyclone had been introduced to pre-concentrate the phosphate ore by scrubbing the slime before flotation, which can result obviously in reducing the dosages of soda ash from 15 Kg/t to 4 Kg/t, and raising the grade of P2O5 in the concentrate from 27.84% to 36.13% at the expense of about 4% recovery of P2O5. They also substantially reduced the time of sedimentation of concentrate after flotation from ~10 to ~1 min. In this paper, the effects on the recovery of P2O5 by the different dosages of flotation reagents with or without de-sliming were studied, with the objective of determining the different effects on the functions of flotation reagents by slime during flotation. In the crushing and grinding of metallics for beneficiation, the sizing is normally done to liberate the metals or sulphides for further processing to improve recoveries of the basic metals or minerals. The objective is to reduce the ore in size through various closely controlled stages to that degree of fineness which gives an economic liberation of valuable mineral, but which avoids as much as possible the production of sliming fractions. A different philosophy applies to the crushing and grinding of Gypsum. Our requirements normally demand controlled grinding and/or crushing of the material not only to a fineness suitable for further processing of the mineral into end products, but to produce various sizes of material which are them- selves saleable products. The majority of our tonnage ultimately ends up in stucco for Wallboard. Therefore, our mineral reduction is normally designed toward this end, but it is done in a manner that permits drawing off inter- mediate products to meet various Customer requirements. This forces us into compromises at times in our equipment installations, and our equipment must sometimes be more versatile and complex than we would like it to be. We try to process our basic rock, Gypsum, for the most efficient size reduction. We market 5 to 6 different sizes intermediate to the end product, which generally is the fineness of material to be used for stucco for Wallboard, and we do this with controlled crushing, grinding and sizing cycles of the material. To summarize, we use a different philosophy of crushing and grinding than the metallic field which uses comminution or crushing and grinding to improve recovery, whereas we choose our equipment to crush and grind primarily for product performance.

And Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt is seemingly so unpopular in the West, he no longer campaigns there for Clinton Administration policies. Pendley is president and chief legal officer of the Mountain States Legal Foundation, a public service, non-profit law association that takes on property rights cases for people who cannot afford representation. He was one of the luncheon speakers at the 101st Northwest Mining Association meeting, held in Spokane, WA in early December.

In most circumstances, the traditional methods of. ore reserve estimation for large undulating sedimentary deposits, such as coal and iron formations, do not allow the accurate prediction of grade for mining blocks. The problem is Particularly accute when the mining blocks are small with respect to the thickness of the geological zones in the deposit, and when there are significant grade changes between the foot-wall and hanging-wall of these zones. A simple geostatistical model has been developed, which takes into account the grade changes not only in the direction of the geological strata, but also in the direction normal to these strata. The genesis of sedimentary deposits and the resulting geological properties of these deposits were considered in the development of the model. The model has been successfully applied to the evaluation of a large coal deposit. Eventhough some practical difficulties have been encountered, for example when part of a geological zone was missing or had not been sampled, these difficulties have been .resolved. Both the theory and its practical application are presented in this paper.

"A fundamental component of the Hoek–Brown empirical rock failure criterion is assessing an appropriate mi constant. In developing their empirical criterion Hoek and Brown normalised triaxial test results by dividing the principal stresses at failure by the uniaxial compressive strength to provide mi values for typical rock types. Experience shows that Hoek triaxial tests for individual lithology types commonly have a large inherent scatter. In addition, tests are often conducted on core from random locations, which although being of one parent rock type, display variations in density as well as minor variations in grain size and alteration.This paper presents experience from projects the authors have been involved in which large sample populations of triaxial and UCS tests on similar rock types were available. Geophysical logging data was also available for some projects. The methods used to estimate the compressive strength for each sample and the effects on normalising the data sets are described. The variability of the data and uncertainties and assumptions involved in the process of assigning a mi value from the normalised data are also discussed."

"The use of sensors to monitor gaseous species in industrial processes is discussed. All of the existing systems have disadvantages. Sensors, based upon solid electrolytes, which can be placed directly into the gas stream are attractive but many also respond to oxygen, need to be sealed at high temperatures and require a separate reference. This paper describes sensors, usually based upon two electrolytes, which do not respond to oxygen and do not require high temperature gas seals or separate references. The application of these sensors to the measurement of carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide and trioxide and hydrogen chloride is described. These sensors can be placed directly into the gas stream at elevated temperatures.IntroductionOn-line gas sensing is becoming more important as concerns regarding the environment mount. There are many established techniques for monitoring gases in industrial processes, with applications in safety monitoring, chemical analysis or process and emission control. Flue gas analysis involves the greatest technical complexity, requiring several sophisticated capital-intensive spectroscopic instruments for different species as well as needing highly skilled operators. There are also several instruments, based upon aqueous electrochemistry, which are available for the analysis of the gases S03, S02, N02 but these require that the gases are sampled at high temperature and cooled, prior to analysis. These instruments cannot be considered as giving on-line measurements of the gas composition. Furthermore, the power requirement of these instruments frequently precludes battery operation for field and domestic use."

This paper presents the TMT “3D TopScan” profilemeter, which is a Radar-based profilemeter that measures the total burden surface within a few seconds and on a continuous basis. This equipment is based on an electronically steered solid-state radar scanner, such that a very large amount of surface data is collected within short time intervals. These new electronically steered antenna systems are the key to meet the demands for both accuracy and speed. The TMT probe is installed at a fixed location at the top cone, such that it does not interfere with the charging, enabling a continuous measurement and a compact design.Blast furnace charging optimization can be achieved based on its measurement data. The burden surface is continuously measured every few seconds, enabling the blast furnace operator to detect any details including asymmetries or irregularities in the surface pattern. A variety of process analysis tools are available. Due to the continuous and fast measurement, the burden descent speed can be supervised without process interruption on an ongoing basis. More accurate process models (layer models) than ever are obtained which fully consider the unsymmetries.This technology, developed by TMT Tapping Measuring Technology, is successfully in operation at Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH at their blast furnace B. The probe and the data evaluation tools combine today’s technological capabilities in measurement technology with the practical requirements of blast furnace operation.

As we compete for close margins in wholesale sales, the effects of both quality and price have a major impact on the cost of producing electricity.SO2 emission allowances have traded as low as$60/ton to as high as $215/ton over the last three years. This price spread in emission allowances clearly demonstrates the correlation between the quality of fuels versus the price utilities will be willing to pay for them. This paper provides an overview of the effects of the qualities of fuel, coupled with transportation as well as environmental concerns on the price of fuel and the ability to compete in a deregulated electric market.

Results are presented that were gathered during pilot-and field-scale testing of an innovative technology, sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), designed to treat and control acid mine drainage (AMD). The project was performed under the Mine Waste Technology Program (MWTP), which is funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and jointly administered by the EPA and the U.S. Department of Energy through an Interagency Agreement. The MWTP is implemented by MSE, Technology Applications, Inc., located in Butte, Montana. Sulfate-reducing bacteria, a common group of anaerobic bacteria, produce hydrogen sulfide and bicarbonate when supplied with sources of carbon and sulfate. Hydrogen sulfide reacts with metal ions in AMD, precipitating them as metal sulfides; the bicarbonate serves to help neutralized the drainage. Pilot-scale testing was performed within eight packed-bed reactors at a temperature representative of a field application of this technology in a northern climate, nominally 8°C. The reactors, packed with an organic substrate, were operated continuously in upflow configurations receiving AMD at a flow rate corresponding to a 5-day retention time over a test duration of 60 days. During this time, numerous physical and chemical parameters were monitored. Pilot-scale metal removal efficiencies reached 99% for zinc, 99% for aluminum, 96% for manganese, 98% for cadmium, and 96% for copper. Iron and arsenic removal was not as effective as the aforementioned metals, which was largely attributed to the high levels of iron and arsenic contaminating the organic substrate. Evidence existed that both adsorption and sulfate reduction were occurring within the reactors.

CLAY mining in the 'United States is by no means a small industry for approximately ten million tons of shale and clay are recovered yearly. The bulk of this tonnage enters into the manufacture of paving, building and refractory brick, draintile, pots, sewer pipe, stoneware, and wall and floor tile. This group of manufactures is commonly known as the heavy clay products industry. The winning of the raw materials for this industry constitutes merely a step in the manufacturing process because the manufacturer usually owns and operates his own source of supply. The mining of kaolin and the whiteware and chinaware claps, however, is usually a separate industry.
