What are future prospects for U.S. mining? In many quarters the assumption is made that this country has passed its zenith as a mineral producer -- that it is in a period of decline and that it is becoming a have-not nation like Japan and much of Western Europe. These industrial rivals of ours must depend almost entirely on others for their mineral supplies. In trying to answer this question one must of course distinguish between resources and productive capacity. In today's volatile and competitive markets, the definition of what are reserves and what are merely identified resources becomes ever more difficult. Many large deposits have been found that are unlikely to be viable in the marketplace under normal conditions but that can be of significance to the nation's military and industrial security in times of emergency. I should like to draw on personal experience from World War I1 for illustration. 4fter Pearl Harbor great concern developed over the availability of a long 1ist of strategic materials for which this country was largely dependent on imports. Included were a number of minerals of which domestic deposits had been identified. Among these were chromite, manganese ore, mercury, mica and tungsten.

Fuel cells with thin samaria-doped ceria (SDC) electrolyte films deposited onto an anode support using spray pyrolysis were fabricated. The SDC films were deposited onto porous NiO-YSZ substrates at deposition temperatures between 400°C and 450°C. The influence of process parameters such as deposition temperature, flow rate, type of salt and salt concentration on the quality of the film was studied. A smooth dense film was successfully deposited using the precursor cerium ammonium nitrate and samarium nitrate dissolved in butyl carbitol (33.3 vol.%), 2-methoxy-l-propanol (33.3 vol.%), and ethanol (33.3 vol.%) solvent mixture. A deposition rate of 125 nm/h was achieved.

"Black powder is employed widely in peace and war. Its properties are therefore of considerable interest to many. The Bureau of Mines frequently is asked to furnish information on its use and safe handling in the mining and mineral industries in times of peace and is now engaged in studies of its application to the arts of war.Black powder has been the agent in many accidents - some very disastrous - and its handling and use are deemed very hazardous. The belief is widespread that the hazards are due principally to the ease with which the powder is ignited by a hot spark or flame in contradistinction to high explosives; these usually are ignited only with difficulty, and some burn incompl0tely and to a certain extent are self-extinguishing. Primary precautions, .therefore, should be taken to prevent the access of heat, spark, and flame.In black powder manufacturing operations a frequent source of disaster is the initiation of fires and explosions in the wheel mills in which the sulfur, charcoal, and nitrate are incorporated. Long experience has indicated that the wheel mill probably will fire if the powder is not kept moist enough; manufacturing supervision calls for the maintenance of a minimum moisture content, at least during the milling. Accidents occur elsewhere in the manufacturing line, and in an endeavor to minimize these, particularly those happening in corning mills, one of the writers suggested many years ago that a suitable humidity be maintained in other operations in the hope that it would serve protectively as in the wheel mill. The experience of one company for many years with this practice was favorable. It seemed desirable therefore, to explore the question experimentally."

During operation of tailings impoundments, water is lost through decanting, evaporation and seepage. Techniques have been developed to regulate or control each of these components. Collectively implemented, these techniques form the basis of tailings impoundment management. Regulation of the rate and level of decanting influences the size of a free water pond, and, thereby, the amount of evaporation and seepage, which are both area-dependent. Conversely, the encouragement of seepage and/or evaporation could also be used to reduce decanting requirements. Management of one of the components of a tailings impoundment's water balance is reflected in changes in the other components. The seepage component has the greatest potential impact on the environment, and consequently requires the closest scrutiny. Water percolating through tailings backfill transports heavy metals and other dissolved solids from the impoundment into the local groundwater regime. Depending on the seepage volume and concentration of contaminants, seepage from impoundments could exceed environmentally tolerable limits. Once mobilized, seepage-borne pollution is much more difficult to treat, mainly because of the problems in collecting the diffusive transportation medium. Pollution abatement measures relative to tailings impoundment seepage depend on seepage prevention or reduction. Seepage control measures include constructing barriers to flow, pump-back systems of interception and restricting the supply of water available for seepage.

The economic success of cave mining projects is significantly influenced by the secondary fragmentation size distribution of the caved orebody and making the fragmented ore available for extraction. If the cave does not propagate as predicted, it may lead to stalled cave growth and/or localised preferential caving. This can cause significant ore loss and the inclusion of excessive waste in draw columns, both of which damage the economic value of the project. Uncontrolled caving can have severe consequences for the safety and economics of mines. Such safety risks include air blasts due to the formation of excessive air gaps and damage to infrastructure due to surface subsidence. Monitoring the cave-back delivers critical feedback that is required to exert control over its propagation and reduce the likelihood of adverse consequences. Current methods for monitoring cave propagation include access through open holes, microseismic monitoring systems, time domain reflectometers and extensometers. All of these monitoring systems rely on stable holes for installation and ongoing data collection. However, cables in holes often get sheared due to ground movement in the seismogenic zone well ahead of the cave front, rendering the systems useless. To resolve this issue, Elexon Mining, with the support of Rio Tinto, developed the Networked Smart Marker system, which is based on Elexon’s Smart Marker technology. This system provides a more robust and versatile alternative to other cave monitoring systems as the data is transmitted wirelessly through rock, and thus is not vulnerable to hole shearing/dislocation experienced with current cave monitoring systems. Installations at the Argyle block cave have proven that the Networked Smart Maker system can continue to provide information on the cave-back’s location long after all conventional monitoring systems have failed. "INTRODUCTION Many major cities in the United States have a combined storm water and sanitary sewer network. Regular rainfall overwhelms the system capacity and results in millions of cubic meters of untreated sewage being dumped into local waterways. One legally mandated solution includes several kilometers of large diameter shallow or deep rock or soil tunnels, a pump station as well as associated collection sewers, diversion structures and drop shafts. In this paper, the basis for design of different system elements including the drop shafts and pump station is explained in detail. Common construction methods used for different type of shafts including tangential vortex and baffle plunge, and also pump station alternatives comprising cavern or various shaft configurations are discussed. DIFFERENT TYPES OF PUMP STATIONS The dewatering pump station serves as the heart of any deep CSO tunnel system and is critical to the goal of reducing CSOs by providing a controlled release of the stored tunnel volume to the wastewater treatment plant. As the major mechanical component of the project, the station will require the greatest attention by operations and maintenance staff. Designing a durable and easily operated pump station requires addressing some major challenges, including the following: • Longevity – equipment, materials of construction, and station environment • Controlling odors • Safety for operators and maintenance personnel • Easy access to equipment • Protection from hydraulic surges Location. Owners face a fundamental decision relative to the location of the pump station, which will affect how these challenges are addressed. The pump station can be built within the tunnel launch shaft or within its own dedicated shaft. This decision is driven by cost and schedule. Use of the tunnel launch shaft may provide owners cost saving opportunities by not having to construct a separate pump station shaft. However, this will likely extend the pump station construction as much as two years until the tunneling has been completed. Furthermore, delays to the tunneling operation would delay the pump station construction work, potentially leading to delay claims. For this reason, it has been more common to utilize a separate pump station shaft on recent CSO tunnel projects (Nasri et al. 2015)."

Conventional industry tests used to determine leach recoveries are often fully monitored and may be time-consuming and expensive. Such tests may be limiting in geometallurgical applications where large numbers of samples are required to be processed for characterisation of an ore deposit. BHP Billiton currently use a fully instrumented leach test for characterisation of Olympic Dam uranium-rich samples. Researchers at the Commonwealth Scientific Research and Industrial Organisation (CSIRO) were approached to develop an alternative to these full-scale leach tests that could allow for the ranking of samples in terms of their leachability. The novel geometallurgical test was required to use samples of small mass and be affordable and rapid.Three leach test protocols were pursued in developing the small-scale tests. Kinetic leach tests were performed using mild conditions at higher pH, low temperature and low oxidation reduction potential, moderate conditions at intermediate pH, temperature and oxidation reduction potential and aggressive conditions at lower pH, higher temperature and higher reduction potential.This paper presents results from 44 leach tests on 11 samples with varying uranium mineralogy. The developed small-scale tests correlate well with data from the more costly conventional industry laboratory tests, indicating the possibility of using this alternative test as a geometallurgical leach proxy. Simple regression analysis confirmed the importance of pH, reduction potential and temperature on uranium extraction. Experimental data were fitted to published leach models to predict uranium leach extraction for a range of operating conditions.The ultimate aim of the test work is to combine a limited number of large-scale calibration tests, a large number of small-scale geometallurgical tests and leach models for geometallurgical sample characterisation and evaluation of a wide range of scenarios or processing options.CITATION:Turner, N L, Kuhar, L L, Francis, N, Liebezeit, V, Ehrig, K and Robinson, D J, 2013. The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel Expansion Project (HRBT), initiated by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), will add two new 1.5-mile TBM bored tunnels to the two existing immersed-tube tunnels between artificial islands, part of the connection between Norfolk and Hampton under the Hampton Roads Harbor in Virginia, USA. The new bored tunnels will be built by Hampton Roads Connector Partners (HRCP), a joint venture of Dragados USA, Vinci Construction, Flatiron Constructors and Dodin Campenon Bernard. This paper covers technical discussions that led HRCP to select a Variable Density TBM to address the challenges of this tunnel project, including but not limited to (i) the diameter of the bore: a 46 feet (14.04 m) diameter machine that constitutes the second-largest TBM ever used in the United States; (ii) shallow ground-cover under the water table; (iii) challenging and varying geology along the alignment, with mixed-face conditions and different types of ground modification zones; and (iv) the high TBM operating pressures required—all these and other challenges in a sensitive marine environment.

The United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Natural Gas Department of the American Gas Association, has been studying actively for the past several years the flow of natural gas through high-pressure pipe lines. This report deals with that part of the study involving the design off pipe-line systems consisting of lines laid parallel to each other. The lines are referred to as the original line and the parallel line. The paralleling line may or may not extend the entire length of the original line; however, the parallel line is connected at its two ends to the original line. As a result of the large expansion of the natural-gas industry almost all markets within economic distance from the developed gas fields have at least one pipe line supplying them with natural gas. Small increases in the consumers' demand for natural gas can be met usually by increasing operating pressures, but any marked increase in demand necessitates paralleling sections of the existing systems. Horizontal stresses are caused by global plate tectonic forces. During 1995 alone, they were largely responsible for closing two U.S. longwall mines. This paper presents six case histories from Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Alabama. In each case history, a mine encountered roof falls or difficult ground conditions in the headgate, caused by horizontal stress concentrations. The problems are detailed, and the control measures adopted are described. In most cases, nearby longwall panels without stress concentrations were trouble-free. The paper also discusses detailed measurements made at two adjacent Pennsylvania longwalls. One headgate was oriented to avoid a horizontal stress concentration, and the other was not. Eliminating the stress concentration dramatically reduced roof support loads and roof deformation. The paper concludes that proper panel orientation and sequence is the key to maintaining headgate ground control. The optimum orientation is not parallel with the maximum horizontal stress, as previously thought, but rather 20° in the stress shadow of the gob. Other stress control techniques, including artificial support, are briefly discussed.

The Courthouse Commons SEM Tunnel was excavated within 6 feet of cover beneath two buildings in downtown San Diego utilizing high-precision geotechnical instrumentation. The excavated dimensions are approximately 25 feet in diameter and 328 feet in length connecting two in-service detentionlevel security buildings. Presupport includes large-diameter grouted canopy pipes and smaller pipe spiles. Initial support consists of fiber-reinforced shotcrete with lattice girders. This paper presents observed ground and structure behavior and lessons learned. Reduction of titania and ilmenite ores by Cf4-H2-Ar gas mixture was investigated in a laboratory fixed bed reactor. Titania was reduced to titanium oxycarbide in the temperature range of 12OO-1500°C. At 1400-15000C, the extent of reduction of titania to titanium oxycarbide achieved more than 85% in 90 min. Optimum conditions for titanium oxycarbide synthesis by reduction of titania include temperature in the range of 1300-1450°C, methane content 8 vol% and hydrogen content above 35 vol%. Ilmenite ore was reduced by Cf4-HrAr gas mixture to metallic iron and titanium oxycarbide. Metallic iron catalyzed methane cracking and solid carbon deposition. Titanium oxycarbide formed at temperatures as low as 950°C. The optimum temperature for reduction of ilmenite is 1200°C and the optimum methane content is 8 vol%. Increase in hydrogen content increased both rate and extent of reduction. With 5 vol% CH4-75 vol% Hr20 vol% Ar gas mixture, the reduction of ilmenite completed in 60 min. Reduction of titanium oxides to oxycarbide with following chlorination may be an efficient alternative technology for processing of titanium minerals.

Inadequate goaf gas control may lead to gas exceedances in the ventilation return air, which will trip power in longwalls and cause production stoppage. To effectively control gas emissions, Australian mines heavily rely on drilling vertical goaf holes to capture coalmine methane before it migrates to mine openings. The wide application of goaf gas drainage may change the goaf pressure distribution, lead to more ventilation air leakage, and consequently increase gas explosion and spontaneous combustion risks. This paper focuses on analysing goaf gas drainage production data from a case study longwall mine in Australia. The correlation between suction pressure, total flow rate, gas flow rate and air leakage rate were analysed in detail as the face-to-hole distance changes. Suction pressure is found to be positively correlated with total flow rate, and their correlation also varies at different goaf locations due to various goaf compaction and flow resistance. This paper also proposed a theoretical method to calculate the goaf resistance of ventilation air leakage pathways. Based on several basic assumptions and different goaf drainage scenarios, the leakage airflow pathway resistance in the goaf at different face-to-hole distances can be calculated. The model results suggested that the resistance of air leakage pathways from the working face to individual goaf holes increased with the face-to-hole distance. The resistance results can also be used to calculate the corresponding permeability at the same position, which can be used as input data for CFD or Ventsim models.

In heavy minerals separation, the titanium and iron oxide phases are separated from silicates in the coarser particle size range (80 - 150 mm) using magnetic and electrostatic separators. With the ongoing challenge of heavy mineral ore deposits getting increasingly finer in particle size, conventional separation equipment suffers from the ability to process this material at the same throughput rate as coarser particles. A variety of magnetic separation technologies were developed to perform at a much finer particle size range, down to 2 mm in the clay industries mainly to remove titaniferrous oxide particles. Complementing the developments made on the physical aspects of magnetic separation, Cytec Industries has recently developed a ‘bolt-on’ chemical enhancement technology for magnetic separation (CEMS). This is to enable separation of finer particles, and weakly paramagnetic titanium phases from diamagnetic silicates that are not amenable to magnetic separation. This paper will provide an outline of the technology, illustrate its ability to process a wide variety of ores, and also discuss plant limitations. The major advantages of chemical enhancement technology to magnetic separation includes: simple dosing equipment extension to existing magnetic separation technology; ability to produce product of comparable quality with improved cost effectiveness, when compared to incumbent flotation; removal of impurity minerals over wider size range; enhanced removal of non-magnetic impurities; and improving the process robustness. Furthermore, chemical enhancement technology for magnetic separation has also emerged as a platform for removing impurities at lower levels in other mineral systems as well.

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigation beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the thirteenth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township. The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project, except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes show on figure 13 in volume 1. The description of the deposits developed is followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes. Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated and a table for each half township is given with the discussion covering that area.

Three different refractory carbonaceous gold ores from the Carlin operation in northeastern Nevada were investigated to characterize the effect of passivation treatments on the nature of the carbonaceous material. The carbonaceous material was chemically isolated from the ores and passivated residues, and examined by FTIR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and gold adsorption capacity. The main component of the carbonaceous material in these ores was found to be a naturally occurring activated carbon-type compound. Hydro-carbons were detected on rare occasions, but no evidence was seen for humic acids. Ore samples were passivated by autoclaving, or by treatment with sodium hypochlorite or gaseous Chlorine. In some of the passivation tests, a new peak was observed in the IR spectra of the isolated carbonaceous material, that was due to carbonyl functionalities. However, all of the passivation treatments tested decreased preg robbing significantly. This suggested that the appearance of the carbonyl peak was due to the severity of the conditions during passivation, rather than the method used.

The ignition and combustion of chalcopyrite particles under suspension-smelting conditions, in which the particle-particle interaction is neglected, has been analyzed by considering the intrinsic kinetics of oxidation and heat and mass transfer between the particle and its surroundings. Reasonable agreement has been obtained between the calculated results and experimental results from a laminar-flow furnace reported in the literature. This computation- al procedure has further been applied to flash-smelting conditions. Under suspension-smelting conditions (Sh = Nu = 2), chalcopyrite particles ignite at around 960 K. The effects of various parameters, such as oxygen concentration, particle size, and gas temperature, have also been evaluated. Comparison between calculated results in this work and experimental observations indicates that SO is the important gaseous product that forms at the surface of the particle.

This report describes aperiments by the Bureau of Mines and reviews theoretical aspects of the use of organophosphate solvent extraction for recovering beryllium from sulfate leach liquors. The leach liquors were prepared by sulfuric acid leaching of lime-sintered low-tenor beryl flotation concentrates. The experimental work on sulfate leach liquors showed that the acidic esters of organophosphates extracted beryllium slowly but in preference to aluminum. Three common alkylphosphoric acids, di- (2-ethylhexyl) (EHPA), heptadecyl (HDPA), and dodecyl (DDPA), in order of decrmsing selectivity, yielded a partial separation of beryllium from aluminum.

"The characteristics of a blasted muck pile can have a significant effect on the productivity and economyof loading and hauling operations. Poorly fragmented and tight muck piles, caused by insufficientdisplacement of the broken rock, lead to higher digging and hauling costs. Therefore muck pile must be tailored to suit the loading and hauling equipment. In order to achieve this objective, it is imperative to understand the relevant muck pile characteristics and factors governing them. In general, muck pile characteristics are governed by the blast design parameters, rock mass geology, explosive characteristics and post-blasting requirements."

Vapour pressures of sulphur have been measured over the temperature range 340-1039°C by means of boiling-point measurements, an internally heated pressure vessel being employed with argon as the pressure medium. The results are expressed satisfactorily by a four-term pressure-temperature relation. At the cited critical temperature of 1040°C the calculated critical pressure is 204 atm. From the pressure-temperature relation and available thermal data for the vapour, the approximate composition of the saturated vapour in terms of the various molecular species has been derived for the critical point
