A CBMM aplicou aços micro ligados ao nióbio em dois tipos de caçambas de carregadeiras de rodas que operam na usina de Araxá, Brasil. O objetivo foi avaliar os benefícios destes aços relacionados com redução dos custos, aumento da produtividade e vida útil dos componentes. Uma das máquinas analisadas coleta peças quentes de ferro nióbio para carregamento dos silos do britador. O uso de um aço ferramenta de alta resistência e resistente ao desgaste solucionou os problemas de deformação, desgaste e rachaduras durante o serviço, aumentando a vida útil da caçamba em cerca de 190%. A outra máquina avaliada foi uma carregadeira de rodas que opera na mina de minério de nióbio. O novo desenho com aços de alta resistência mecânica e resistente ao desgaste reduziu o peso em 14%, correspondendo ao incremento na capacidade de carga. A carga extra possibilitou um aumento na produtividade dos caminhões de 42 toneladas. Com os novos materiais, as trincas anteriormente encontradas na caçamba da pá carregadeira foram eliminadas, enquanto foi mantida a resistência ao desgaste antes oferecida pelo aço revestido com carbeto de cromo reduzindo também os custos de investimento em 7%.

In past years, water drainage control in coal mines has been primarily directed on the basis of water quantity rather than quality. Due to the recent intense interest in total ecology and environment, emphasis has shifted to the point where the water exiting from a mining operation may be of better quality than when it enters. In most operations this has meant the use of treatment methods (neutralization) while the technology for the prevention of acid drainage is being developed or refined. To date, underground abatement of acid formation has generally been less expensive but also less effective than surface treatment of the mine water. It seems probable that total mine water pollution control will have to include both underground abatement and surface treatment methods. The general acid producing reaction involving the oxidation of pyrite - 2FeS2 (pyrite) + 702 + 2H20 ? 2Fe2S04 + 2H2SO4 - is well known, even though the individual steps are not clearly understood. The major implication of this reaction, that acid production can be eliminated by not allowing the contact of pyrite with free oxygen or water, has been well substantiated both in the laboratory (1,2) and in practice. (3) Underground abatement or control processes can be generally classified into two types: (1) the effective control or elimination of acid causing reactions within the mine, and/or (2) the reduction or prevention of water flow into and out of the mine. Recognizing the fact that these two types may be directly inter-related, this paper will, for the purposes of clarity and simplification, discuss each separately.

Precipitation in the northeastern United States, Florida, California and in many industrialized areas of the world is now more acidic (lower pH) than can be accounted for by natural causes. At the same time, the acidity of many lakes and streams in the northeastern United States has been measured and found to be similar to that of actual rain. These facts have led to conclusions that the two conditions are related. Coal burning utilities, 700 to 1000 miles upwind, have been accused of being the cause, leading to proposals for strict emission controls on the alleged offenders. The costs of these controls would place an estimated $10 to $15 billion capital burden on utility customers in about 15 states plus $2 to $6 billion annual operating costs. There appears to be no direct well-established scientific evidence that the accused are guilty but that the indictment is based largely on circumstantia1 evidence. This study examines the evidence, describes the situation and proposes what must be done to reduce the acid precipitation in an orderly cost beneficial manner. It is interesting to observe that studies by the different adversaries on the acid precipitation issue come to different conclusions largely because they do not read the same literature, but selectively develop evidence to support their own points of view, This study will try to review the issues impartially and reach a position of scholarly balance.

Data on sulfonate adsorption by silicate minerals are very scarce in the literatures. Perhaps the only comprehensive paper written on the topic was done by Fuerstenau and Bhappu (1); this work dealt exclusively with quartz but included many important suggestions as to the form and nature of the hydroxy-sulfonate species of some cations formed during the conditioning step and their effect on the flotation response of quartz. Another paper by the same authors (2) contains additional data on the role of hydrolysis in sulfonate flotation of beryl. As postulated by Fuerstenau and Bhappu, a solid form of cationic sulfonate functions as the collecting species to produce flotation of quartz and beryl. According to the authors, the solid compound is a hydroxy-sulfonate of a given cation, where the hydrogen of the hydroxyl part provides a means for bonding of the species to the mineral surface; thus, the presence of hydroxyl in the neutral precipitated compound is of primary importance to produce flotation. Although the preceding examples illustrate the effect of a sulfonate collector in silicate systems other than plagioclases, they are important as examples of processes of hydroxy-sulfonate complex formation. Since the plagioclase minerals con¬tain Ca(II) and Al(III) cations, which are very reactive in sulfonate media (1), the formation of hydroxy-sulfonate compounds with these cations released from the solid phase may well prove to be the cause for their flotation.

Este estudo tem como objetivo apresentar as etapas, os desafios e melhorias na implantação da área da logística da Companhia Siderúrgica do Pecém (CSP) na primeira Zona de Processamento de Exportação (ZPE) do país que está localizada no estado do Ceará e tem a siderúrgica CSP como a primeira empresa a se instalar nessa área de livre comércio com o exterior. Nesse contexto a logística tem um papel importante e fundamental no planejamento e controle minucioso dos fluxos de entrada e saída de materiais e produtos cumprindo todas as legislações federais e estaduais de uma ZPE. O estudo é realizado através da análise dos conceitos logísticos de uma siderúrgica e das normas e portarias que regem uma ZPE. Os resultados alcançados estão pautados nas sugestões e alterações das disposições legais e na integração entre os sistemas controlados pela Receita Federal com o sistema da CSP. O estudo tem como conclusão que todas as melhorias que foram propostas e alcançadas nessa implantação pioneira, proporcionaram maior eficiência e agilidade nos processos de controle aduaneiro da ZPE voltados para uma siderúrgica, mantendo continuamente a interação entre todas as entidades legais sem impactar a dinâmica operacional da siderúrgica, agregando grande valor para a CSP.

The purpose of this U.S. Bureau of Mines study was to assess the ability of trainees to don an unfamiliar self-contained self-rescuer (SCSR) after having become familiar with how to put on a different type of apparatus. Prepractice instruction was the same for all individuals learning to put on a device: a step-by-step, hands-on talk-through using the "3+3" method. Subjects were assigned to groups that had their initial donning instruction delivered on either the Draeger OXY-SR60B or the CSE SR-100. Trainees' performances were then evaluated using the other model. Donning trials were analyzed using a number of measures. It was found that SCSR design had a moderate influence upon how well the donning task transferred.

The paper point out the structural openings and the localization of ore bodies. Structural openings in rocks constitute the primary permeability network for the formation of most hydrothermal ore deposits. The distribution, geometry, density, and orientation of ore bodies in structural openings are controlled by two primary factors: the far and near field stresses and the mechanical properties of rock. When stress controls the orientation and kinematics of faults and fractures in the absence of pre-existing weaknesses, ore shoot orientation is perpendicular to the fault slip vector and can be predicted by kinematic analysis. However, when structural openings form along pre-existing weaknesses, ore shoot orientation cannot always be predicted by kinematic analysis. Because we can classify ore bodies based on the types of geological structures discussed above and the variations that naturally occur from material property heterogeneity, exploration for hydrothermal ore deposits should include analysis of geologic structure and evolution, rheological variations, pre-existing weakness, and fault kinematics to evaluate structuralcontrols on localization of ore bodies.

The Bureau of Mines has devised a procedure to recover chromium chemicals from concentrates derived from low-grade domestic chromites. These domestic chromites contain silicon and aluminum impurities at levels that are too high to permit processing by present industrial processes. The Bureau procedure consists of reacting chromite with molten NaOH under oxidizing conditions to form sodium chromate (Na2Cr04)' The reaction product is leached with methanol to recover the majority of the unreacted NaOH, then with water to extract the Na2Cr04 and the remainder of the NaOH. The Na2Cr04 product is recovered by evaporative crystallization from the aqueous solution. This report presents laboratory results of studies to determine the optimum leaching conditions for the reaction products of several domestic chromite concentrates. Results of solution purification and crystallization studies are also presented. The concentrates are from a variety of sources including the Stillwater Complex in Montana, Red Bluff Bay and the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska, and a Ni-Co laterite from southern Oregon. Sodium chromate crystals were produced that contained less than 0.01 pct NaOH.

Uniaxial compressive strength of rock is usually determined in the laboratory from cylindrical samples that vary in diameter from 5/8 to 8 inches, using a spherically seated compression head of unspecified size. The Bureau of Mines conducted a series of tests on limestone, marble, sand-stone, granite, and plaster of paris to determine the influence of the spherical head sizes and the specimen diameters themselves on the uniaxial compressive strength. Cylindrical samples of several different diameters of each rock type, all having a length of twice their diameter, were prepared and broken using at least three different diameter spherical heads. Analysis of the data shows that spherical head size does not significantly affect the uniaxial compressive strength of cylindrical rock samples. However, the diameter of the rock specimens does significantly affect the uniaxial compressive strength. Within the range of specimen diameters tested, a coefficient of variation of 6.4 percent for plaster of paris can be attributed to the selection of specimen diameter alone. Similarly, a maximum coefficient of variation of 4.7 percent for the rock types tested can be attributed to the specimen diameter alone.

Fluorite, a kind of critical non-metallic minerals, is the primary source of industrial fluorine. Sodium oleate (SO) is commonly used as the collector of fluorite ores. However, because of its some features (such as the low solubility, high solidifying point, and poor dispersion of SO) at low temperatures, it profoundly inhibits its collecting ability as well as the flotation performance. Herein, we have developed a low-temperature-resistant collector for the efficient flotation separation of fluorite from quartz. The advantages and disadvantages of the SO and sodium petroleum sulfonate (SPS) were analyzed by comparing the performance under different temperature conditions. The results of flotation tests suggest that SPS exhibited much better collecting performance than SO under low temperature. The flotation mechanism of the two collecting agents were further analyzed by contact angle measurements, zeta potential measurements, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and flotation kinetics. The results indicated that both collectors can selectively undergo electrostatic and chemical adsorption with fluorite, with no adsorption on quartz surface. The sulfonic acid group in SPS is a hydrophilic functional group, which has a relatively higher solubility in water. Therefore, the water solubility of SPS is better at low temperatures.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines performed experiments to determine the embedded hydrogen chloride (HCI) and smoke particle characteristics during combustion of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and chlorinated mine materials for development of a test parameter. The experiments were conducted in an approximately 20-L furnace at set furnace temperatures of 250° and 1,000° C, for a 14-min duration, with an airflow through the furnace of 10 L/min. The variables studied, as a function of time, were hydrogen chloride embedded on smoke particles, hydrogen chloride concentrations in the gas phase, smoke particle average diameter (dg) and particle concentration (no), and product of smoke particle diameter and concentration (dgno). Other variables included carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), and oxygen (O2) concentrations; sample mass weight loss; and furnace temperatures. Results show that there is a correlation between embedded hydrogen chloride, hydrogen chloride gas concentrations, and inverse of the smoke particle diameter-concentration product (1/dgno); the higher the hydrogen chloride gas concentrations, the higher the embedded hydrogen chloride, the higher the 1/(dgno) values. These correlations will enable development of a simple test parameter to assess the toxic hazard that these materials pose during fire.

Predictive maintenance technologies including vibration analysis, tribology, infrared thermography, ultrasonic detection, and electrical measurements have been applied to large electric mining shovels. The predictive program was initiated on the P&H Model 2300 and 4100 electric shovels. The utilization of these technologies has shown the potential for improving electric mining shovel availability and minimizing maintenance costs. Predictive technologies provide the tools to assess machinery condition. Availability is enhanced by the condition based planning of component replacement. Maintenance costs are minimized by focusing resources through condition based prioritization.

Este trabalho tem por objetivo apresentar o projeto de modernização do sistema de supervisão da Mina, Britagem e Concentrador I da unidade de Germano da Samarco Mineração. A principal motivação que levou a Samarco a modernização do sistema de supervisão foi o fato da aplicação atual já estar saturada, dificultando novas implementações, além de já apresentar limitações no diagnóstico de defeitos e intertravamentos. Na solução implementada, destaca-se a estratégia de virtualização adotada, o sistema para cadastramento e modificação em tempo real das entidades do CLP e as funcionalidades para gestão de alarmes.

An important part of planning for the rehabilitation of uranium mine sites is the ability to assess the geomorphic stability of the final landform, over time frames ranging from decades to millenia. Depending on the environmental conditions, erosion features such as gullies may incise into containment structures, potentially leading to the exposure and transport of encapsulated radioactive material. Further, erosion may lead to increased sediment loads and the transport of other mine-related contaminants off-site and into downstream waterways. While erosion may be monitored and assessed over the short term (years to decades), the longer-term behaviour (centuries to millennia) of such landscapes is not within any meaningful human management time frame. Landscape evolution models (LEMs) can provide information on soil erosion rates at decadal or centennial scales over large spatial scales, and evaluate the sensitivity of these processes to environmental changes. However, an important issue associated with the use of models is the ability to assess the reliability and accuracy of the model. In this paper, the CAESAR-Lisflood LEM is tested for its ability to predict soil erosion from a series of 30 m × 30 m experimental plots specifically constructed for this purpose on a trial rehabilitated landform at the Ranger Uranium Mine in the Northern Territory, Australia. Model predictions of bedload and suspended sediment loads from the erosion plots were compared with field measured observations collected over four wet seasons from the trial landform. Once calibrated for the specific site hydrological conditions, the predicted sediment yield – specifically, bedload – demonstrated an excellent correspondence with the field data. However, longer-term simulations of ten years identified an exhaustion effect in sediment yield from the landform. These latter results indicate that a weathering function needs to be incorporated into CAESAR-Lisflood to ensure confidence that the CAESAR-Lisflood LEM will be able to correctly predict the long-term evolution of a rehabilitated landform once it has been?constructed.CITATION:Lowry, J,?Saynor, M,?Erskine, W, Coulthard, T and Hancock, G, 2014. On January 5, 2012, the Mine Safety and Health Administration ordered the closure of the Silver Shaft, the primary underground access to Hecla?s Lucky Friday Mine, for removal of built up backfill material that accumulated over time on the shaft walls and furnishings. Lucky Friday and Cementation USA personnel worked quickly to identify the most effective means to get the mine back into production. The team developed a fast-track procurement and refurbishment plan utilizing shaft sinking winches, headframe modifications, a partial shaft sinking Galloway, and modified cages to not only complete clean-off of buildup, but also replace pipe brackets, shaft steel, and power and communications cables as needed in the 1,860 m (6,100 ft) deep shaft within 14 months.

Tertiary calc-alkalic to alkalic rocks of the Little Rocky Mountains in north-central Montana host low-grade heap-leachable gold-silver deposits being mined by Pegasus Gold Corporation. Total production from 1884 through 1985 is estimated at 22,625 kilograms (727,414 ounces) of gold. This includes 10,774 kilograms (346,400 ounces) recovered by Pegasus between 1980 to 1986 from 20,318,000 tonnes (22,396,000 tons) of ore grading 0.960 grams of gold per tonne (0.028 ounces per ton). Silver production during this latter period was 24,556 kilograms (789,500 ounces), but reliable silver statistics prior to 1980 are not available. Ore reserves as of January 1, 1986, were estimated to be 35,380,800 tonnes (39,000,000 tons) grading 0.720 grams per tonne (0.021 ounces per ton). Present ore production is 5,533,920 tonnes (6,100,000 tons) per year at a 0.45 to 1 waste to ore strip ratio. Current annual metal production is about 2,644 and 5,288 kilograms of gold and silver respectively (85,000 and 170,000 ounces of gold and silver respectively). The Little Rockies were formed by a calc-alkalic to alkalic magma penetrating through the Precambrian basement into the overlying Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks. This intrusive center is Dart of the Central Montana Alkalic Province, a region comprised of twelve separate intrusive centers aligned in a northeast trending belt measuring 200 by 400 kilometers (124 x 248 miles). The ore deposits are structurally controlled epithermal systems which vary from deeper narrow veins to shallow, wide, low-grade stockworks, breccias and intensely fractured "sheeted" zones. The shallow types are now being exploited. Primary mineralization consists principally of gold and silver associated with pyrite, native gold and silver, sylvanite, calaverite, and hessite. Alteration is broadly classified as weak argillic. Pyritization, kaolinization, silicification and feldspathization are the dominant forms of alteration. Fluorite is a common hydrothermal gangue mineral.

The sizing of crushers depends on the expected crushing forces. However, the crushing forces develop differently with every individual rock while it is compressed by the working surfaces of the crusher. For sizing, this compression process has to be characterized by the maximum crushing force. The maximum crushing force depends on the strength, shape and size of the rock, the amount and velocity of the imposed displacement of the working surfaces of the crusher on the rock and the conditions of the contact surfaces. From experience it is known that the strength of the material and, therefore, the crushing forces depend on the size of the specimen. This dependence is the so called size effect. The determination is based on compression tests. The force development is recorded during the compression of the specimen and for every individual test the maximum force is determined. The occurring maximum crushing forces of several rocks with the same diameter comminuted under the same conditions can be assessed by a mean value and a variance. The relationship between the mean values of the cross section related maximum crushing forces FAmax and the corresponding sizes d of the specimens can then be described by mathematical functions. They are derived from different approaches (phenomenological, statistical and statistical-physical methods). The phenomenological methods are subjective and yield functions depending on the assumptions of a person, whereas the statistical and statistical-physical methods are based on an evaluated function and the optimization of the parameters.

Uncertainty in prediction and modelling of geological (physical) ore continuity in geometrically complex ore deposits is a key risk factor in mining. Reducing geometric uncertainty of hard-boundary ore/waste contacts and related geological features improves the efficiency of local mineral resource estimation and reserve calculation, mine/stope planning, ore control and in-mine exploration. Detailed underground mapping of serial-level drives provides a continuous record of the characteristics and contact configuration of ore, as well as crucial ore-related geological features that are required to resolve geometrical variability when closely spaced drilling proves inadequate or is cost-prohibitive. The mapping-based approach described in this paper re-establishes the focus on the geology of the orebody by incorporating high-value, detailed geologic mine mapping information. Mapped ore-related configurations and relationships, recorded on a succession of faces or on a series of levels, provide the basis for 3D interpolation and extrapolation of the local geologic continuity of an orebody. Correlative points representing locations of key ore-related geologic features on each face or level are linked by 3D polylines or trajectories forming a coherent geometrical framework. The coherent progression of geometric changes mapped by these trajectories reveals the overall ‘dynamic’ of the geometrical framework, as well as the spatial tendencies of its geological constituents. Distinct sets of ore control trajectories are selected from within the framework and are used in the construction of alternative geological ore continuity models. As mining proceeds, alternative models are evaluated, and are then either refined or rejected. The geometrical framework is used to evaluate theoretical models and practical heuristics, focus exploration targeting and inform and guide all aspects of mine geology in active mines. This approach also lends itself to analysis of global ore continuity in the re-evaluation of mature or abandoned mines. Its use is particularly effective in geometrically complex orebodies such as the West Branch orebody and the orebodies of No 2 mine of the Balmat-Edwards-Pierrepont zinc district, which are used to illustrate the method. This paper presents the scientific framework underpinning the Resource Valuation and Optimisation Model (RVOM). The RVOM is a Real Options software package, which helps mine owners optimally plan their operations, understand their project risks, and make defensible valuations. This is achieved in the presence of both financial and physical uncertainty. The three key outputs from the RVOM are: Valuation, Optimal Decision and Probability of Decision, where a decision can include any combination of: normal operation, expanded operation, care and maintenance, and abandonment (and variants thereof). This paper presents a clear example of the RVOMs usage to a case-study gold mine.
