Affected by the disturbance of blasting activities, deformation instability and rock dynamic disasters are prone to occur in deep hard rock roadways. Thus, it is particularly necessary to understand the failure behavior of rocks and roadways under dynamic loads. In this study, a series of impact loading tests were carried out on sandstone samples with and without a circular cavity by a modified split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) test system. The mechanical properties and energy evolution of the samples were systematically investigated, and the effect of cavity size was analyzed. The results showed that the presence of the cavity in the samples weakens the dynamic compressive strength by more than 10%, and the peak strain and brittleness are also reduced to varying degrees. Under dynamic loading, spalling cracks occur first on the roof and floor of the cavity, and then different numbers of shear cracks are formed on the sample diagonals. The eventual shear failure mode is the result of the connection of the shear cracks and the cavity. As the cavity radius increases, the dissipated energy density and fractal dimension both grow accordingly, leading to smaller and smaller rock fragments. The dynamic failure behavior of the circular cavity can be well explained based on the dynamic stress distribution law. Overall, this study can provide a reference for the study of the mechanism of rock burst in deep roadways.

A Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL) is being planned at the site of the former Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, SD, under the sponsorship of the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) in cooperation with the Department of Energy (DOE). This national facility will host a variety of multidisciplinary science and engineering experiments, including physics experiments that require shielding from cosmogenic radiation. Current plans include construction of large rooms (up to 55 m in width) at depths of 1.48 km (4,850 ft) and 2.25 km (7,400 ft) below the surface. Preparation of the preliminary design required the development of a geotechnical characterization program, including preliminary drilling and coring, core logging, drill hole mapping with a televiewer, drift mapping of the geology and rock structure, in situ stress measurements, and laboratory testing of the mechanical properties of the rocks and discontinuities. Overall rock quality is very good to excellent. Site investigations included geotechnical assessments for the construction of caverns and laboratory modules. The results are favorable and reaffirm selection of the Homestake site for establishment of a Deep Underground Engineering and Science Laboratory.

A preliminary investigation has been conducted to determine the conditions for the precipitation of phosphate from the liquor produced after a hydrochloric acid pre-leach and rare-earth recovery from a rare earth containing fluorapatite concentrate from the Nolans rare earth deposit in the Northern Territory of Australia. The results show that at 50oC the phosphate can be precipitated in two stages using limestone to produce a Stage 1 precipitate containing most of the impurities including iron (94%), aluminium (92%), fluoride (98%), uranium (84%) and thorium (94%), followed by a relatively pure Stage 2 dicalcium phosphate precipitate (DCP) containing only 0.05% Fe, 0.05% Al, 0.1% F, 0.01% U, and <0.01% Th. The initial Stage 1 precipitate contained about 25% of the phosphate while the remaining 75% reported to the Stage 2 phosphate precipitate. Depending on the required radioactivity specifications, the amount of phosphate in the Stage 1 precipitate could be reduced. Reagent requirements were 11.4 kg limestone (as pure CaCO3) per cubic metre of solution for the Stage 1 precipitate and 39.7 kg limestone (as pure CaCO3) per cubic metre for Stage 2. The analysis of radionuclide balance indicated that radionuclides deported mainly to the final filtrate (86.4%) compared to Stage 1 precipitate (5.4%) and Stage 2 precipitate (8.2%). Settling and pressure filtration tests indicated the precipitates were both readily settled and filtered. The final moisture contents of the Stage 1 and Stage 2 precipitates were 62.5% and 49.3%, respectively.

Current regulations regarding the landfill disposal of asbestos containing wastes are inadequate to ensure there are no ground water or airborne emissions. Accordingly, there is growing recognition that asbestos wastes can only be safely disposed of by using techniques that destroy the hazardous fibres. An innovative high-temperature plasma arc technology (The MAGRAM Process) is being developed for the recovery of magnesium metal from asbestos together with supplementary magnesia containing feedstock. The furnace will operate in. open bath mode with aluminium and/or ferrosilicon being employed as reductant. An important advantage of the process is that magnesium vapour within the furnace will be generated close to atmospheric pressure rather than at reduced pressure under which existing processes operate. Thermodynamic modelling work has been undertaken to define the range of slag composition and furnace temperature under which magnesium production at atmospheric pressure is feasible. The effect of slag chemistry, reductant addition, and temperature on product quality and yield have also been investigated and key aspects have been tested on bench scale. A 300 kW pilot plasma furnace unit has been employed for the treatment of calcined asbestos wastes. Aspects of design and operation of the unit are detailed. That calcium will activate quartz for flotation with anionic collectors such as soaps has been known for a number of years,1 2 3 and the method has been applied to the concentration of various iron ore 4 5 6 as well as to other materials. Clemmer gives the permissible pH range for the activation of quartz by calcium as between 9.5 and 12.5 with an optimum value of 11.0, and Hertzog7 has determined the calcium abstraction of iron ores and of Ottawa sand, but otherwise little quantitative data are available. The purpose of the present investigation was to determine those conditions under which dilute solutions of calcium chloride will activate quartz for anionic flotation and to determine the amount of calcium ion adsorbed by quartz. Those variables, the influence of which was primary, such as calcium, sodium, and hydrogen ion concentrations, were studied. Other factors which influenced the results are discussed in the description of the experiments. Three different experimental methods were used to determine the activation of the quartz. The first method was to treat a sample of ground, deslimed quartz with solutions of calcium chloride and sodium hydroxide, and to determine the calcium adsorbed by chemical analysis of the solution. This paper proposes a new multiresource multistage scheduling problem for optimising the open pit drilling, blasting and excavating operations under equipment capacity constraints. The flow process is analysed based on the real-life data from an Australian iron ore mine site. The objective of the model is to maximise the throughput and minimise the total idle times of equipment at each stage. The following comprehensive mining attributes and constraints have been considered: types of equipment; operating capacities of equipment; ready times of equipment; speeds of equipment; block-sequence-dependent movement times of equipment; equipment-assignment-dependent operation times of blocks; distances between each pair of blocks; due windows of blocks; material properties of blocks; swell factors of blocks; and slope requirements of blocks. It is formulated by mixed integer programming and solved by ILOG-CPLEX optimiser. The proposed model is validated with extensive computational experiments to improve mine production efficiency at the operational level. The model also provides an intelligent decision support tool to account for the availability and usage of equipment units for drilling, blasting and excavating stages.CITATION:Kozan, E and Liu, S Q, 2014. For a number of years the Bureau of Mines has been conducting an investi-gation of crude petroleum from producing fields in the United States and the Western Hemisphere and has published a series of reports on these fields. Analyses of crude-oil samples from some oil fields of Louisiana are given in Bulletin 291. Analyses Of 26 representative crude oils from various producing formations of southern Louisiana are given in this report. These samples are from 14 fields in 10 parishes in the southern part of the State, usually designated as the "Louisiana Gulf Coast area."

The following is a Maintainability Design Checklist for coal mining equipment. The purpose of the checklist is to provide a summary of design review points for the maintainability assessment of new or existing underground equipment. It specifically focuses on the identification of equipment design features, tasks, or procedures that impact equipment downtime, repair costs, labor hours and maintainer skill level requirements. Some checklist points are general in nature. The checklist was designed to be used across all categories of underground equipment. The intent is to draw attention to design features and maintenance procedures that will increase maintainability requirements. You are encouraged to adapt this checklist to site specific or machine specific requirements by: Inserting specific performance criteria for various categories of maintenance tasks. For example; all hydraulic lines on a shuttle car should be replaceable in 15 minutes or 25 minutes, etc. Adding or deleting checklist items for different categories of equipment. You would include environmental control equipment, for example, on face equipment and not on shuttle cars or man trips. Adding additional checklist items based on site or equipment specific maintenance histories or experience, company maintenance standards, or other factors.

The RICHTER scale is used in classifying earthquake severity. It is an energy scale giving the estimated energy liberated at the source of the earthquake. Earthquake damage on the earth’s surface, for example at the epicenter - spot on the earth’s surface directly above the earthquake, for a given RICHTER number can vary. This depends on the depth of the earthquake focus. Deeper earthquakes will generally cause a lower level of damage at the epicenter but the damage will be spread over a greater area. As mentioned by Randy Wheeler on Blastserve, each successive RICHTER number represents about a 30-fold increase in energy. This scale is open at both ends with “0” RICHTER equal to about 104 Joules. The lowest level detected by sensitive instruments is about 2 on the RICHTER scale or about 107 Joules. The highest-level earthquake detected at 8.9 RICHTER represents a release of about 3 x 101 7 Joules.

The Energy Act of 1992 has many users of ac-induction motors eyeing premium-efficiency motors with mixed feelings and perhaps some confusion. When the October 1997deadline arrives for compliance with the1992 standards, the winners will be the environment due to reduced need for more power generating plants and the petroleum economy because of reduced dependency on foreign oil. But what will it mean for industrial users? The most obvious benefit is the potential for smaller electricity bills. Motors account for about 64% of the electricity consumed in the United States, at a yearly cost of $112 billion. Every 1% reduction in motor demand cuts 0.64%, or $716 million, off the industry wide bill. Higher efficiency motors also run cooler. This lightens the load on air-conditioning systems and further reduces plant demand. Lower total demand can lead to lower rates by helping to minimize peak-demand surcharges. As rates increase over time, these savings get bigger.

The oxo reaction consists of catalytic conversion of olefins by reacting the olefins with CO and H2 (water gas) to aldehydes that contain one more carbon atom than the starting olefin. The aldehydes are then generally reduced with hydrogen to primary alcohols in a second stage. The two-stage process is called the oxo process. The word "oxo" is derived from the German "oxierung" (ketonization); thus the exact English equivalent of "oxo" is "keto". The oxo process may be applied to nearly all olefins. A wide range of pressures and temperatures may be used in both stages. The pressure range usually employed is 150 to 200 atmosheres. The temperature in the first stage is usually about 140° C. and in the second or hydrogenation stage about 180° C. Although a standard Fischer-Tropsch catalyst may be used for both steps, cheaper catalysts have been utilized to effect hydrogenation of the aldehydes. Most of the information for this, report on the oxo process was gathered from Technical Oil Mission microfilms. T.O.M. Reels 14, 55, and 134 were especially valuable. T.O.M. Report 6 by H. M. Weir was very helpful. Information on the oxo process is scattered throughout documents captured in enemy territory, and the present report does not include all the available data. Some of the information was procured by personal interview. Where, in the body of this report, certain investigators are quoted, the source of the statement is either personal interview or the T.O.M. reports.

This report details the testing and evaluation of a modular azimuth and positioning system (MAPS) to provide navigational information for a continuous mining machine. Vehicle navigation is part of the U.S. Bureau of Mines research program in computer-assisted mining serving as a tool to increase mining health, safety, and productivity. The Bureau is investigating other navigation systems, but MAPS seems to have the most promise. MAPS was installed on a continuous mining machine. An operator used the machine to cut coal while researchers collected machine and MAPS data. A comparison of MAPS data for xy position and data obtained with an electronic transit showed an increasing error for MAPS. After 30 min of operation, the easting position error was -0.02 m, and the northing position error was 0.019 m; after 60 min of operation, the easting position error was -0.19 m, and the northing position error was -0.26 m. Modifications to MAPS software and to the operational procedure of the machine significantly reduced this error by a factor of 3.7. Researchers continue to reduce these errors.

Proposed advantages and disadvantages of low-voltage shielded trailing cables are formulated utilizing the literature and industry sources. A partial analysis of these proposed advantages and disadvantages is completed through a review of the literature. Cable costs are assembled from mine operators, cable and splice manufacturers, and actual cable purchases. To confirm each advantage and disadvantage, an underground test site is established, and testing is performed here and in the laboratory. All testing procedures are completely described. The results of this investigation are reported and used to formulate recommendations attendant to low-voltage shielded cables. Suggestions for installation, handling, and maintenance are presented.

[The Bureau of Mines well-bore caliper was designed to provide an instrument that could be operated through 2-inch tubing, which &apos;a used particularly in many input wells on water-flooding projects of eastern, Kansas and northeastern Oklahoma. It should find wide application elsewhere under many other conditions where it has not been possible previously to make caliper logs with the larger probes used on other instruments. The caliper has three additional advantages over other instruments of this type: (1) It measures 4 radii (up to 18 inches) 90° apart with an accuracy of ± 1/4 inch; (2) the measuring arms can be opened and closed at will by remote control; and (3) it is run and operated on a single-conductor, armored electric cable (Amergraph, type 1-H-0). The caliper probe is 1-3/4 inches in diameter and approximately 6 feet in length. The electrical control and measuring circuits are encased in a stainless-steel tubular case. Measuring arms, made of 5/16-inch aluminum tubing, are attached near the lower end of the instrument. Distances the arms are extended are indicated t the surface by a meter calibrated to read directly in inches. Depths at which the radii measurements are taken are indicated by a wireline depth indicator on the cable-reeling. The instrument is not affected by pressure or temperature, it can be run open hole or under pressure through a lubricator. This paper describes and illustrates the instrument and outlines the operating procedures. A bibliography at the end of the report gives references to articles and patents on the development and use of other well-bore calipers.]

Because power system topographies for surface coal mines are significantly different from those for underground coal mines, the requirements for ground wire monitors for surface systems are somewhat different. This paper analyzes the problems faced by high-voltage ground wire monitors. Based on this analysis, some design requirements for monitors are suggested. Finally, results from laboratory evaluation of some of the commercially available monitors are presented.

The Port of Conneaut, the largest bulk material handling and storage facility on the Great Lakes, is using the latest electronic and visual testing devices to augment and enhance its well established computerized preventive maintenance system. The results of this comprehensive program have been impressive. The remaining life of components can be accurately forcast, and replacement can be programmed around operations, resulting in a significant improvement in system availability and reduced costs for the dock operator and its customers.

Before the present century there existed a fairly persistent demand for the establishment of a Federal Department of Mines, but relatively little was done about it until a considerable number of very serious coal-mine disasters in 1906, 1907, 1908, and 1909 created what might almost be termed a national scandal and virtually forces the Federal. Government to take action to try to solve the problem of the cruse and prevention of such disastrous occurrences. Instead of a Department of Mines, the mining people had to accept a bureau, which was created on July l, 1910; and while the Bureau of Mines was given numerous functions, unquestionably the promotion of safety in the mineral industries was and continues to be one of its main "jobs." The Bureau&apos;s organic act was approved in 1910 and amended in 1913. Both the original and amended acts indicated that promoting; the health and safety of the mine workers constituted the chief function of the Bureau, and that this was the construction placed on its activities by those put in charge in 1910 is shown very definitely by the fact that as soon as the Bureau came into existence on July 1, 1910, both health end safety activities were started in its Mine Accidents Division. Before the end of the first fiscal year (June 30, 1911) 6 mine safety stations had been established in various parts of the United States, add 6 nine safety cars had been put into the field; by October 1910 first-aid-training work was being done in mining regions. The Bureau eras able to function so promptly in its safety work largely because sections of the Geological Survey, which had been doing some coal-mine safety work since 1907 or 1905, were transferred into the Bureau when it began to operate in July 1910. On October 30, 1911, a national First-Aid Meet was held at Pittsburgh, Pa., at which first aid and mine rescue were demonstrated. During the fiscal year 1910-11, the first year of the Bureau&apos;s existence, 509 persons were given certificates indicating completion of the Bureau&apos;s training course in first aid.
